Around Town in Aventura Miami Aventura Real Estate Investment Club to host networking event, July 15 Quickly growing “MAVREIC”, Aventura’s first and only Real Estate Investment Club launched only a few months ago and is streaming in success. If you have an interest in real estate or want to learn the ins-and-outs of the current market, you won’t want to miss the next meeting on Thursday, July 15th, 6:30 p.m. at Residence Inn Aventura Mall. Whether you’re a seasoned real estate investor, new investor, or just someone who wants to network with those who are, there is something to learn or someone to meet at MAVREIC. The first two meetings took place to a standing room audience, and were both a great success. MAVREIC Cofounder and author Morris Vahnish shared some great information about what type of properties you should be looking at in today’s market and then Boca Real Estate Investment Club President David Dweck spoke about different strategies to become successful. “I had the fortunate opportunity of attending a MAVREIC seminar and I walked away with an enormous amount of information which I will be able to use to further my investment strategy,” says Optometric Physician Dr. Robert Sheir. “I was able to network with professionals in the real estate industry as well as people like myself who just wanted to learn more about real estate in general.” Co-founders Michael Stern and David Bloom were instrumental in putting this club together and were both very pleased with the results and are very excited for what the future of this club has in store. Due to the club’s initial popularity, another meeting MAVREIC Power Lunch has been scheduled. This lunch meeting will take place every first Thursday of the month at

I was extremely impressed with the expertise of the members of MAVREIC and the insight they shared about the South Florida market. Foreign and loyal friends Dan Palmer ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Wanderings & Ponderings Joan has always been on the loyal side. She came here from farming country in Ohio. Her family had always visited in the winters and she decided to go to the local university because farming was not what she wanted in a man. Up in her home base that was all you got. Enjoyed her college years which also included Roger who she connected with the last year in school. She thought he was a possibility for a long range relationship but out of school and on their own it was obvious that they weren’t going to make any kind of music together. She wanted one-on-one, he wanted to play the entire orchestra. She was quite bright and friendly which got her involved in the advertizing field. She was good at it, successful very outgoing and as a result meeting and dating many

men seemed to come naturally to her. The problem for her was that when she wanted friends of the male variety it never seemed to remain in that category. She was very attractive and that somehow seemed to eventually move with the males into a possible shot or pretty much no friendship and no choice. Her friends eventually seemed to be only women where she could relax until the woman friends got themselves involved with some men who somehow made passes at her. This made her not too popular with said rapidly unfriendly women friends. This was a big problem to her because she liked people and she felt lost without a close friend or two. Her life changed when she ran into Klaus and Greta recent arrivals from Germany. They were looking for a place to stay and she did have an extra bedroom available Their field was security and that’s how they made her feel. They quickly bonded and finally Joan has found a pair of friends that she can care about and who give unflinching of themselves. After all that’s what German Shepherds do.

‘Kindsight’ by photographer Robert G. Zuckerman Continued from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– engineering teams who helped make the event such a masterpiece success. “It was indeed a special evening where Robert Zuckerman’s life’s work, along with his beautiful family were the ‘stars’ of the show – it was thoroughly enjoyed by all,” Rohan said. From taxi and bus drivers to waitresses, plumbers and kids at a playground, “Kindsight” merges the ordinary with the extraordinary. James Crump, renowned fine art publisher and curator, says, “Zuckerman’s portraits are infused with an uncanny sense of hope and spirit in the post 9/11 era.” The book also includes forewords by Will Smith, Debra Winger, poet Michael Lally and novelist Elaine Kagan; and is currently on the PEN American Center’s “Best Book Read This Year” list. Originally evolving in 2003 as a series of e-mails sent by Zuckerman to friends and associates, today “Kindsight” exhibitions include permanent displays at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Google Headquarters in New York City – and now Aventura Hospital has joined the list of premier sites where “Kindsight” can be appreciated by the community. “Hospitals are well suited for ‘Kindsight,’ as it celebrates human spirit and radiates healing energy,” Zuckerman said. “For me, photography as much as

possible has become an integration of life and craft. Through it I am able to give value to people’s lives and derive value in my own life.” Complementing the exhibition, “Kindsight” books and limited edition prints are on sale at Aventura Hospital’s gift shop with proceeds primarily going toward the ongoing care of Zuckerman’s sister as well as the hospital’s charities of choice. “I really enjoyed meeting Aventura Marketing Council members,” Zuckerman said. “What a dynamic caring, diverse group of people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for a wonderful, unforgettable event.” Aventura Marketing Council president Elaine Adler noted, “What a pleasure to bring our members to Aventura Hospital for a very special reception to meet Robert Zuckerman and his entire family. ‘Kindsight’ is most appropriately named. You can just feel the kindness and caring he brings to his work - exactly like the outstanding team at Aventura Hospital, where the ‘Kindsight’ project has found a perfect home.”

Are you running around?

Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Running is universal. Even if you do not run for exercise you are a runner. Every one runs. There are some things you run for, there are some things you run from, and there are some things that you run to. You could be running for; your life, for an office, for a promotion, for your health, or for home plate, the ultimate prize. You could be running from; reality, memories, pain, sadness, unhappiness, your fears, your thoughts, the truth When you run away, you are fleeing from something or someone. You are trying to escape. You are literally on the run. You may be running from yourself or from others. You may be running from responsibilities, duties and obligations. You may be running from a streak of bad luck. You could be running to; alcohol, drugs, food, serial sexual relationships, and your death. There are some things that you

should run from and there are some things you should run to. You should run from criticism, abusive relationships and selfdestructive behaviors. You should run to; safety, peace of mind, love, his or her arms, and to all positive relationships. When you run you are in action. However, you could just be running to and fro. If you run back and forth you are going nowhere. It is like running in circles. You are not running towards your goals. But, when you run, if you only focus on the goal you may miss something new and something wonderful along the way. You may miss something that is missing from your life. At some point, you should stop running. Some people forget to stop running they just keep going even when they have achieved their goal or objective. Remember when you run something you are directing and managing it. You should be the one who runs your own life. Do not let others run it for you. Do not run against yourself. Do not knock yourself down, compete with yourself or oppose yourself. Patricia Frank is s Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Michael-Ann Russell JCC unveils new Social Center Café The mood was light and the smiles were plentiful at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center / Sanford L. Ziff Campus, 18900 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach, as members and guests witnessed the formal Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the new Social Center area. The new Social Center encompasses Elsie’s Café, the Waxman Family Outdoor Deck, the Kiblisky Lounge, the Solomon Gateway, the Buze and Cecilia Ghelman z’l Baby Gym, the Internet Café / Computer Center / Teen Lounge, and the Outdoor Playground dedicated in memory of Marlene Haime De Finvarb. Members and their guests were invited to begin the morning by attending the MAR-JCC’s Annual Meeting, where MAR-JCC President Jeffrey Scheck, and Executive Director Gary Bomzer, provided an overview of the JCC’s accomplishments and challenges, along with its vision for the future – as part of their “State of the JCC” remarks. Following this was the offi-

cial ribbon cutting ceremony where family members of the ‘Named’ and dedicated areas were present to unveil each component of the Social Center. It was a bittersweet moment as Elsie Halberstein, granddaughter to the woman for whom ‘Elsie’s Café’ is named after, cut the red ribbon, to a rousing round of applause and resounding “Mazel Tov!” Elsie’s Café and the Social Center marks the completion of the first phase of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC’s expansion plans. The Café is the second restaurant to open at the JCC’s Sanford L. Ziff Campus, after last year’s opening of the first Kosher Subway in South Florida. Elsie’s will be on the opposite spectrum, serving kosher dairy including sandwiches, paninis, borekas, smoothies, salads, baked goods, Starbuck’s Coffee and more, all of which can be enjoyed with seating inside or outdoors. The restaurant and lounge will be available for private parties as well. For more information, call 305-9324200 x127 or visit MARJCC.org

Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY When Miami-Dade County became “Miami-Wade County” in honor of basketball star Dwyane Wade it opened the door for other possible name changes that could be made right here in Aventura… “Lost & Founders Park” – If the City Commission voted to change the name of Aventura’s Founders Park to “Lost & Founders Park” - frequently lost items like wallets, keys, sunglasses and workout gloves could all be sent to one central location creating a great public service…and maybe everyone could even find all their missing socks! “Aventura Bull-evard” – If the City of Aventura hosted a thrilling event like the Running of the Bulls – the perfect place to have it would be “Aventura Bull-evard.” To collect money for changing the name on

street signs, the city could use revenues from all the red light camera tickets being issued to motorists turning right without coming to a complete stop first. “Lowe’s Bagels” – If Mo’s Bagels decided to partner with Lowe’s home improvement store, Aventura residents could get their favorite bagels plus all their hurricane supplies in one convenient place – and when the season ends, the name could be changed back (unless of course one of the named storms is called Mo). “Soul Foods Market” - It would be great if Whole Foods Market periodically changed names on special days to celebrate foods from diverse cultures…Another idea might be widening some of the aisles and welcoming families and friends to enjoy the new “Bowl Foods Market.” “Aventura Mall-Ballpark” – The Aventura Mall is already enclosed - so instead of going to all the trouble of building a new stadium, the Marlins could have pitched the idea of acquiring the property and changing the name to “Aventura MallBallpark”…If all the best players could live in the City of Excellence, they’d never dream of ever leaving the team!

Biscayne Foundation show part of art classes BY LYNN CARROLL An exhibition of artworks underway since May 28 at the Biscayne Institutes HealthCare Community™ center is the culmination of a four-month Youth Enrichment Program underwritten by the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs and The Children’s Trust. The entire project included classes in art history and learning how to enhance nonverbal expression as well as production of art pieces culminating in the art show. The art history and enrichment education focused on the style of four famous artists, says Dr. Marie A. DiCowden, a nationally known healthcare psychologist and Chair of The Biscayne Foundation. The crowning touch in the curriculum, she says, lets each student create and display an original piece in the style of the four artists under study. Dr. DiCowden says the objective of the program, called “The Ways of the Masters,” is to enrich the lives and broaden the experience of participating youngsters, all of whom are residents of Miami-Dade County. Professional evaluations of such classes involving both presentations and discussions show participating

youths have a positive experience, she says. “They really enjoy them,” Dr. DiCowden says. “They ask for more opportunities to learn such as this.” This time, she says, students learned about Michelangelo, Mondrian, Picasso and Jackson Pollack. Biscayne Foundation, with the support of the Miami Dade Department of Cultural Affairs and The Children’s Trust, provides enrichment programs for children in the community, especially those with severe disabilities that might not otherwise be able to be included in such classes. Biscayne Foundation, Biscayne Institutes and Biscayne Academy provide numerous education and rehabilitation programs for children, youth and adults with special needs. They also participate in the Florida Scholarship Opportunity program and accepts the State John McKay scholarships.

Read ‘Diet Myths’ for true weight loss success

Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again

BY BARI AUERBACH

Have you ever scooped out a bagel or blotted pizza with a napkin? You can find out if these strategies are really diet myths or truths in the new book “Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat” by Dr. Nancy L. Snyderman, chief medical editor for NBC news, appearing regularly on The Today Show, Weekend Today and Nightly News with Brian Williams. According to Dr. Snyderman, a selfproclaimed “veteran of the diet wars,” these are some of the most prevalent diet myths: Calories don’t count - it’s the kind of food you eat that’s the problem. It’s your fault you’re fat. (No, it’s not. There are other recently discovered factors that cause people to be overweight and obese other than personal responsibility, including hunger hormones, environmental factors, and genes) Fat is fat–it doesn’t matter where on your body you carry it. Carbs are bad. Carbs are good. You can get most of your nutrients from supplements. Diet drugs are the magic bullet. (Dr. Snyderman discusses the pros and cons of the current crop of diet pills, how and if they should be used, and by whom in her book) Exercise is all you need. (Dr. Synderman talks about the importance of exercise and how it works hand-in-hand with nutrition, not alone) Diets don’t work. (Dr. Snyderman says diets do work, it’s just learning to do it right) In Diet Myths That Keep Us Fat, Dr. Snyderman reveals exactly why bogus ideas get in the way of what should be the simple and even joyful endeavor of reaching and maintaining your ideal weight. In their place, she reveals 101 surprising truths such as:

Ly Espinol

A bulging belly now could mean dementia later. Bananas are a great diet food. Fast foods aren’t off-limits. You don’t really gain much weight over the holidays. There is a way to spot reduce. Yo-yo dieting does not wreck your metabolism. You don’t automatically pack on pounds when you get older. Chocolate is your friend while dieting. Muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat. You can eat after 8 p.m. and not gain weight. You can eat dessert for dinner when on a diet. VIEWPOINT We’ve got to get out of there Strategies that depend on invading and pacifying Afghanistan thereby bendingh it to the invader’s will - never work BY DONALD KAUL Pretty much everyone (outside of the nutty "he's the Antichrist" coalition) thinks President Barack Obama did the right thing in firing his Afghanistan commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal. Unfortunately, he did it for the wrong reasons. McChrystal got fired for shooting his mouth off about his disdain for our president, his civilian staff, and our allies within earshot of a Rolling Stone reporter. (Generals and high officials get so used to kid-glove treatment from the mainstream press that they're often shocked when a real reporter shows up and actually reports.) Obama had to get rid of the guy lest he, Obama, be labeled a wimp and lose his already slippery standing with the military and our allies. He immediately won points, however, for naming Gen. David Petraeus as McChrystal's successor. This, Obama assured us, would mean a seamless continuation of the strategy we've been following in Afghanistan. You know times are hard when keeping our Afghanistan War strategy is considered good news. I don't know if you've noticed (with the World Cup and all, times are busy) but we're not winning the war in Afghanistan; we're not even tying. The strategy, whatever it is, isn't working. There's a reason for this: Strategies that depend on invading and pacifying Afghanistan, thereby bending it to the invader's will, never work. Never. It didn't work for Alexander the Great, for the Mongols, for the British Empire or for the Soviet Union, all of which considered themselves experts at invading and pacifying. They all came into the country with flags flying, and all left sadder but wiser--mostly sadder. It's what Afghanistan does to invaders. Now it's our turn. Whenever critics of the war bring up its parallels to the Vietnam Folly, supporters sternly admonish them with: "Afghanistan is not Vietnam." Really? Let's review: We're trying to suppress an indigenous insurgency--albeit one augmented with troops, weapons and support from

outside sources--in a faraway land of which we know little. We're bombing the hell out of them, using $500,000 missiles and multi-million-dollar drones to destroy mud huts, and in the process killing innocent people and converting indifferent bystanders into angry, hate-filled militants. It is a policy of destroying villages in order to save them. In this effort, which is increasingly ours alone, we're dependent for legitimacy on a corrupt, feckless Afghan government that lacks the support of its people. And, lastly, our success depends almost totally not merely on being able to reform that government, but on our ability to transform its largely unmotivated and illiterate army into a modern fighting force so that we can turn things over to them and desert the battlefield without seeming to. Sounds like Vietnam to me. And, like Vietnam, it will end badly. Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's president, knows that. That wily man is already negotiating with the Taliban and its Pakistani sponsors. He knows we're not long for this war. The Republicans would have it otherwise. Led by military geniuses like John McCain and Dick Cheney, they're incensed that Obama has set 2011 as the sell-by date of this war. Apparently, they're willing to keep fighting it forever. And when we do leave, they'll blame the Democrats for "losing Afghanistan," much as they used to blame Democrats for losing China. We're not going to lose Afghanistan, for the same reason we didn't lose China. We never owned it. The Bush-Cheney bunch had their shot at taming Afghanistan. They didn't do it. Whatever their strategy, it didn't work. If they get another try at it, it won't work again. A Taliban spokesman recently said this of his country: "Before Gen. McChrystal, many strong military generals suffered defeat. The Americans know that Afghanistan is the Graveyard of Empires but even so, they invaded this country." The reporter was reminded of a Taliban saying: "The Americans have the watches, but we've got the time." OtherWords columnist Donald Kaul lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Look out, BP’s doing it again! First, BP is drilling down two miles under the Beaufort Sea BY JIM HIGHTOWER Okay people, nature needs us to focus. All of us who love polar bears, whales, seabirds, and other wildlife should put our minds together to send an urgent telepathic message to the animals in the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska. Our message is blunt: Flee! As fast as you can! BP is coming! While our attention has been riveted on BP's disastrous blowout in the Gulf, the British oil giant has been quietly and quickly drilling another risky offshore well three miles off of Alaska's north coast. Dubbed "Liberty," this project requires a technique called "extended reach," which is even more prone to explosions than the Gulf process. First, BP is drilling down two miles under the Beaufort Sea. Then it's going sideways for up to eight miles to tap into one of our national oil reserves. But wait--didn't Obama impose a moratorium on such offshore drilling? Yes... BUT: When Liberty was planned in

the Bush years, it was magically declared by his devil-may-care regulators to be an "onshore project." How can that be? Because the rig sits on a tiny artificial island that BP built, so—voila--it's "onshore" even though it's three miles offshore. Also, just as in the Gulf, industry-cozy regulators let BP write its own environmental impact statements for Liberty. And guess what? BP's 2007 statement said BP would cause no environmental problems. A-OK, said the winking regulators, as they rubber-stamped the project. And what about a disaster response plan, just in case, you know, something bad does happen? Not to worry, BP assured everyone, because the likelihood of a blowout is very remote. So, here we go again. To learn more about BP's Liberty escapade, and to learn what you can do besides warning the sea animals to flee, call the Center for Biological Diversity in Alaska: 907-274-1110. Safe driving in the rain BY TIFFANY DIPANNI

If April showers bring May flowers, what do July floods brings? You got it – an abundance of traffic accidents, slip and falls, and aches and pains you never knew were there! Chiropractic care can help to ease the pain with all of these incidents, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could simply prevent them? Therefore, here are ten useful tips on how to drive safer in South Florida’s rainy season: Slow down-the first few minutes of rainfall are dangerous. After the first drops of rain seep into the road, oil from the asphalt, road tar, oil droplets, and grime float to the road surface. A thin film of oil between the surface and your tires cause roads to be slippery, making you lose control when you brake or steer hard. Better slow down and wait until the rains wash away this film. Roads are more slippery after a light drizzle than after a heavy rain, but this does not mean it is safe to drive at high speeds as uneven patches on the road create water ponds where hard braking or sudden steering can make you lose control. Remember, rainwater changes the road conditions and affects the reliability of your braking system. Avoid flooded areas-a few minutes of torrential rainfall can cause flash floods. The key to survival during flooding is to avoid running water, such as swollen streams and low water crossings. Know your way-whether going on a long trip or coming home from the office, it’s better to know the natural features of your route well. Is the road on low or high ground? Can it get flooded? Is there a canal nearby that floods easily? Be award of road hazards-a heavy downpour can hide street diggings, potholes, ravines, road hazards and debris. Be vigilant when following tall vehicles like an SUV, van, or a truck with high ground clearance and large tires. Better safe (and late) than sorry-when it starts raining heavily and conditions impede the visibility on the roads, stop &

pull over! Whether you are familiar with the route or not, it is best to wait until the rains die down or visibility improves. D ry your brakes-as your wheels go through wet roads, splashing water can wet your brakes, where a thin film of water can accumulate and cut down brake performance. Look at your rear view mirror and if the car behind you is at a safe distance, step very lightly on the brake pedal once or twice. Use your wipers-your wipers are there to keep your windshield clean and help your vision. Keep your windshield clean and check your wipers before you drive out in the rain. Make sure your windshield washer system is working. Switch on your headlights-switch on your headlights in driving rain to make your car more visible to oncoming traffic, decreasing the chances of getting into a head-on collision. Use hazard lights only when neededmany drivers use hazard lights wrongly, switching them on to show other drivers that road conditions are hazardous. Only use hazard lights to warn other drivers that your vehicle is, or is about to become, a road hazard. Watch out for pedestrians-be careful when driving in populated areas. They may suddenly try to cross or move to the road to avoid water puddles or muddy ground. If you follow these ten important rules, your chances of being involved in a car accident will decrease drastically. Even the most minor car accidents are no joke – they can cause permanent injury from whiplash, headaches, and other area-specific injuries. Therefore, if you or someone you know are involved in an auto accident, call 911 first, and then call County Line Chiropractic Medical & Rehab Centers so that we can properly care for you and your loved ones to get you back to a speedy recovery! Take a vacation without spending a lot of money Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY During these tough times it’s hard to go on a nice vacation without spending a lot of money. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful tips that may actually allow you to go on two vacations a year rather than one. Airline tickets could end up costing a lot more this year so it’s important to save money on tickets by taking advantage of whatever special discounts may be offered. In order to save on tickets plan ahead and visit discount websites to look for better deals. While these sites might charge you a service fee ($5 or so), they easily can combine flight segments from different airlines to give you a great deal. It’s also a good idea to take a look at connecting flights. You might think connecting flights are an inconvenience, but you can save a good chunk of money by doing it. Consider the pros and cons and don’t write it off right away.

It also is important to travel light because airlines are starting to charge for everything now and if you have two or more bags, it is likely you’ll be charged for it. Remember to avoid oversized bags whenever possible and try to stick to one bag per person. Oftentimes you can save money on round trip tickets, because one way tickets are so expensive that it makes a round trip ticket cheaper. In addition, flying in and out of the same airport almost always is cheaper. If you are planning to visit two countries and an airline makes you change planes in those countries anyway, you might be in luck. Check pricing on the flights to see if you can stay a few days in the country where you change flights instead of changing planes right away, because airlines often allow you to do that for the same price. We also spend a lot of money on our meals when while on vacation. Most people avoid it, but cooking on vacation actually can be fun. When you do go out for meals, it’s not always the best idea to eat breakfast at the hotel. There’s a good chance that the breakfast at the hotel will be extra expensive and won’t be that great. It probably pays to walk out the front door in the morning and find a local cafe. You might just stumble onto the local favorite.

What’s more, fancy lunches are often much less expensive than dinners. If you eat a big breakfast, lunch and a light dinner, you’ll not only save money, but also eat healthier. When renting a car, make sure you get the smallest car you can possibly find. Not only will you save money at the car rental place, but you’ll also spend less on gas. One-way car rentals (meaning that the pickup and drop off locations are different) are sometimes more than twice the price of standard rentals, especially if the two locations are in different states (or different countries). Also remember that oftentimes your insurance company and credit cards automatically provide rental car coverage, so take advantage of that fact when you rent a car. All you have to do is pay for the rental with the credit card that will cover you. Also, when you’re renting a car and need to refuel, just fill it up with regular gas since that’s what the car rental company uses anyway. Also, decline any offer to fill the gas tank up for you. Even though it seems like the advertised price is cheap, they charge you for a full tank of gas regardless of how much is left in there when you bring the car back. A good way to save money on hotels is to stay in the smaller towns and away from downtown. If you don’t mind the longer ride, you might just save a bundle. Sometimes

smaller hotel chains are willing to give you free upgrades, or even free nights. If you already have a reservation booked elsewhere, call them up and tell them that you would consider changing unless you can get an additional night free. What’s more, if you’re staying at a destination for at least a few days, consider a vacation home instead of hotels. They often are more comfortable and your cost will probably be cheaper. Another way to save money on your vacation is to enjoy the local alternatives. Many items are less expensive when it’s made in the country you are visiting. Consider trying the local beer, coffee or food. You might be surprised at how good and really cheap it is. Look for member discounts, because many attractions such as theme parks, museums and other local offerings have discounts for seniors, children or students. If you are traveling, remember to take your ID and membership cards (e.g. AAA card) with you so that you’re able to take advantage. And when traveling with friends, look for group discounts. Happy traveling!

Even with the most careful planning, unexpected things can happen while traveling. Sometimes, travel delays or weather changes prove to be only minor inconveniences. But, if you become ill while traveling, it has the potential to disrupt your entire trip. With HINI influenza and other viruses in the recent news, more travelers are concerned about the possibility of falling ill while away from home. However, an illness doesn’t have to be exotic or newsworthy to disrupt your trip – a case of stomach flu, a reaction to medication, an accident that causes injury or a sudden condition that requires surgery can all wreak havoc on a carefully planned, long-awaited vacation. If you don’t have insurance that covers you while traveling – most U.S. medical insurance does not cover clients when they are outside the country – treatment costs

can be significant. And, in a foreign country, you may even be required to pay medical bills in full before you are allowed to leave. Fortunately, you can protect yourself in advance by purchasing medical insurance, including medical evacuation insurance, when you book your trip. Medical evacuation insurance covers the cost of being transported home for treatment, which is especially important if you’re traveling to a country with questionable standards of medical care. Access America and Travel Guard are two well-known providers of this type of insurance. The Perfect Traffic Control System

Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION The effort made by many of our local communities to use cameras to cite those who violate the traffic signal has resulted in many hassles and complaints. As good as the system is, it is not perfect. Naturally, the best way to avoid a citation is to stop when the light is red. That may be too simplistic, but it is true. I have never been cited for stopping at a red light! Ths Psalmist, David, did not have an automobile and the traffic light had not been invented. However, he was well aware of what we could call “God’s Perfect Traffic Control System”. It clearly tells us when to Stop!; when to use Caution and when to Go forward. In Psalm 37 david brings us to the first Red Light. Stop! “Do not fret because of evildoers and do ot be envious of wrongdoers.” In David’s language, fret, is a word that describes someone who is out of control and a threat to society. (1) The Yellow Light of Caution lights up; ‘Trust in the Lord and do good.’ Slow down; look around you, pay atention and see to tit that you are doing the right thing. If so, you will be careful to ‘delight yourself in the Lord’ and not in your own frustrations. You won’t find yourself arguing with the judge. In less time than you think, (and sometimes we think the light will be red forever) God will turn on the G reen Light, and ‘He will give you the desires of your heart.’ Go forward and enjoy what He has provided. At the same time you must continue to

use the Yellow Light of Caution: ‘Commit your way to the Lord and trust in Him.’ Soon you will see the G reen Light again as God ‘brings forth your righteousness and your good judgment shining as bright as the sun. Before we get too comfortable sailing along at 60 MPH we are reminded that itis good to ‘Stop, rest and wait patiently for the Lord.’ David brings us to a rather long Red Light as he reminds us again, ‘Not to fret. This time it is because of those who prosper in their wicked schemes, taking advantage of others for gain. This is indeed a long Red Light because we are told to “cease from anger and forsake wrath.’ The idea is, do not take things into your own hands. The light stays red to emphasize the danger of proceeding on that road; Stop traveling that road because it ‘only leads to evildoing.’ By now you are probably ready to blow your horn and just go! But the light is still Red! Verse 9 tells us to ‘be still and wait for the Lord’. Perhaps you decide to just go through the red light; you are first in line; you don’t see a policeman; there is no oncoming traffic, so you GO! The falshbulbs flash and you are caught on camera going through the red light. When you total up the cost of the fine, the lawyers fee, the higher insurance rate, tha anger, frustration and points on your license it may dawn on you that David finishes this sectio saying:”Wait a little while longer’ and the humble, those who are under authority and under control, ‘will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.” Our traffic control system may not be perfect but god’s system is. Follow God’s system and prosper!! (1)Hebrew word: Harah=outrage, fury, loss of temper. Rev. Keyser is Pastor of the Church at Aventura 305-931-4823

Proposed Amendment 1 challenged by Rick Scott candidacy? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Running for a statewide public office is a very expensive proposition. No candidate without the financial backing of either the Republican or Democratic Party can garner sufficient money to mount an effective campaign. Many individuals qualified for public office are deterred from running because they know they cannot raise the required dollars to win an election. Recognizing this fact, and wanting to attract a greater number of qualified candidates, the voters of the state amended our state constitution in 1998 to provide public funding for statewide candidates — governor, attorney general, chief financial officer and agricultural commissioner — subject to certain qualifying requirements. The money comes from the state’s general revenue fund, the money that is used to finance state operations. To receive public funding, the candidate

must first have opposition and agree to spend no more than $2 per registered voter if running for governor or $1 per registered voter if running for a cabinet position. The 2010 November election could cost taxpayers $27 million of their money to fund public campaigns. While Florida is considering eliminating public financing other states are moving in the other direction. Californians, with their gigantic budget deficit, are considering expanding their public financing program. Wisconsin is expanding public financing to include state supreme court candidates. Today the question is: Should Florida taxpayers finance the political campaigns for those seeking public office when we are firing teachers and cutting back or eliminating financing of so many necessary government programs? Up to a few months ago I figured that when the public realizes taxpayer financing of political campaigns is costing $27 million for this year’s round of elections they will vote for Constitutional Amendment 1 and save the money for more needy programs. Let the candidates and their political party finance their campaigns. That was until two neophyte political wan-a-bees came on the scene.

–– COMMENTARY –– One neophyte, Rick Scott, with billions in his pocket, has privately financed his todate successful campaign for governor with his own money. Without public financing there would be no primary. Scott, new Republican on the scene, will coast through the primary and into the general election this November. Now the question is: Do we eliminate public financing and give statewide public office to the guy or gal with the most money or do we keep Constitutional Amendment 1 on the books and give every qualified serious candidate a chance? Is it fair, or is it appropriate, for political newcomers to be able to enter a race based more on their bank accounts than on their ability to successfully hold public office. Is the job for sale to the highest bidder? You must decide when you vote. Another solution? Cap the total, with or

without public funding the amount of money that a candidate can spend on an election. That would include third party financing as well. If a private group wants to take out an ad for or against a candidate, the cost must be included in the limit permitted to the candidate. Obviously, that proposal must come through a public petition drive. No member of the Florida Legislature — past, present or future —ever would endorse such an amendment to our constitution.

2010 Bentley Supersports Convertible a ‘drop top’ to die for

Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS I recently had the pleasure of attending the international press preview in Telluride, CO, for the new 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible, a nifty piece of automotive hardware that will hit American showrooms in September with a base price of $280,400. Yes, that’s correct, there is not an extra zero in that figure. For that tidy little figure, you get an amazingly agile automobile that’s powered by a 621-hp twin-turbocharged W-12 engine (12/19 mpg) mated to a revised ZF 6HP26 automatic transmission with Quickshift that cuts shift times by 50 percent and enables double downshifts. The powerplant delivers 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, 0-100 in 9.6 seconds and rockets to a top speed of 202 mph. That’s the fact sheet for this latest addition to the storied Bentley Motors stable of luxury automobiles, and Bentley executives are patting themselves on the back and crowing that the new Supersports Convertible is the fastest,

most potent drop top the company has ever made. It’s also unmistakably Bentley in its design, from the distinctive center air intake and vertical grilles that feed a 10 percent larger air volume to the turbocharger intercoolers and hood vents that draw hot air from the engine bay. To the rear, curved wheel arches accommodate the increased rear track of the upgraded chassis and give the car a muscular stance. A fixed spoiler and twin elliptical tailpipes add to the rear styling. Inside, the four-seat interior is driverfocused and wrapped in luxury, with satinfinished carbon fiber Alcantara and soft-grip leather for a distinctly sporting and contemporary style. The lightweight carbon fiber sports seats hold occupants in place and shave 99 pounds from the car’s weight. As for the Colorado ride-and-drive, the Bentley marketing team put together a spectacular 200-mile route along the scenic San Juan Skyway that the took the auto writers from upstate Telluride to the historic town of Durango in southwestern Colorado. It was the perfect highway to test the mettle of the new Supersports Convertible with its new 40/60 rear-biased torque split all-wheel drive system. The system reduced understeer when powering out of curves and provided better acceleration and control with “throttle steering.”

Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible has vertical grilles, functional air intake, curved wheel arches, a fixed rear spoiler and elliptical tailpipes.

The climbing, mountainous driving route also showcased the new Bentley SC’s re-tuned Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system with stiffer suspension bushes, upgraded rear anti-roll bar, improved body control, steering response and overall balance. The increased twoinch rear track gives the SC more stability, while lightweight 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels reduce overall weight by 22 pounds. Road-gripping Pirelli 275/35 ZR20 Ultra High Performance tires are

standard, as are carbon-ceramic brakes for fade-free braking. Like all other Continentals in the Bentley lineup, the new Supersports Convertible, runs on both gasoline and E85 bioethanol, or any combination of the two.

Miami Beach Pediatrician ‘Forever Changed’ After Medical Trip to Haiti Rattled nerves and obsessive thoughts kept her up for nights before the trip. Tears filled her bright hazel eyes at the mere thought of leaving her husband and two young children, Josie and Logan, for a week-long journey to earthquake-ravaged Haiti. As soon as the first images from Portau-Prince were aired on television in January, Miami Beach pediatrician Susan Leitner, M.D. knew she wanted to help. But whether she could really go through with it was another story. She wondered whether her experience as a private primary care pediatrician at Pediatric Associates in Miami Beach-where most days involve talking to parents about wellness, nutrition and safety- would be enough to guide her when conversations turned to infection and disease not typically seen in the U.S. The children coming to see her would not be in for an earache or cold, but coming in with severe burns, broken bones, lost limbs—and lost hope. Preparation for the trip began with research. She read up on trauma cases, resuscitation, rare disorders. She got vaccinated for tetanus, meningitis, typhoid fever and Hepatitis A and took antimalaria pills. She spoke at length to Pediatric Associates colleague Robert Perello, M.D., and other physician friends from the University of Miami’s Project Medishare program about their recent medical trips to Haiti. But in the end, it was one simple approving nod and warm smile from her husband, Dan, while standing together at 4 a.m. on an April morning at Miami International Airport that got her on the plane. “Go,” he said. “You can’t imagine how bad it is until you see it. The conditions are so much worse than I expected. It just seemed liked bombs had exploded everywhere.

People there are very stoic. There is this learned helplessness. They travel for days just to get to the hospital and some sit outside its walls and wait for hours to be seen,” she said. “It was over 100 degrees every day. We could take showers for 30 seconds at a time and because of all the bugs, I had to then lather my body with insect repellant. But I kept thinking - this was just an inconvenience for me, but for the Haitian people, this was their daily life.” Soon after arriving, Dr. Leitner’s own inner strength, medical expertise and strong instincts quickly propelled her away from fearing into taking action. She quickly felt purposeful, focused and forever transformed. “It was the

quickest week of my life. It passed by in a blink,” said Dr. Leitner. “When I was there, I was no longer ‘Dr. Leitner’, I was ‘Susan.’ Every child I helped, every vaccine I gave, every wound I treated, it was pure medicine. It was every reason I went to medical school. I didn’t have the stress of the work day, the internet, the phone calls, the charts to fill. I didn’t have anyone to an-

swer to but myself and my patients. I could do what I knew deep in my head and deep in my heart was right. I worked with amazing people all there for the same reason: To help.” She would care for the sick and try to vaccinate every child that she came into

contact with. She’d scribble the date and type of the vaccine given on a note she’d tuck into the child’s pocket. A small gesture, a record, she thought, in hopes that that the paper would be saved in the off chance the child would one day get regular medical care. Project Medishare, where she worked was filled with despair and at times- hope. Loud cries and religious chants were common sounds heard from relatives of the dead and dying. While quiet peaceful moments often accompanied beautiful babies being born. Limited medical supplies, though, meant two, even three babies sharing a single incubator. The sad and ironic part of the life being born out of such sadness, she said, was that new parents were unemotional because the truth was they didn’t know what they

were going to do next. A tent-- as a much as a hospital bed --is considered a luxury that people don’t want to leave. To keep children entertained at night, Dr. Leitner gave out some toys she brought from home. Bubbles, balloons and silly sunglasses left over from her four-year-old son’s birthday party—all to bring smiles to little ones’ faces. One five year old boy brought in to be treated after being hit by a car, wouldn’t react to her antics. He seemed completely lost-- not because of his injuries--but because he had gotten separated from his mother. All he could tell the doctors and staff was his name. Within 24 hours, word got out on the two local radio stations and his mother reunited with him in the hospital. “A very special moment,” Leitner recalled. And there were other uplifting ones. “One day we took a tour of the city and a woman holding a badly burned infant ran up to the bus begging for help. The driver was not permitted to stop, but handed the woman a few dollars and told her to get to the hospital. I never thought I’d see her again. But then the next day, I heard there was an infant, a burn victim, brought in and said to myself ‘that couldn’t be the same woman’ and it was. She managed to get to the hospital and the baby was admitted for treatment. I showed her the picture I took of her the day before. I don’t know how she got there. If she walked, or got a ride, but it was the same lady and baby.” Seven days for Dr. Leitner that forever changed her life. Now, she says, she hopes to inspire someone else to volunteer a week of their own life to help people in deep despair. “You don’t even need to be a doctor. Everyone can help. They need so much help.”
