Buenos Aires, Argentina officials meet with Aventura Marketing Council and Argentine-Florida Chamber members When the extremely successful Urban Land Institute Convention was held at the Miami Beach Convention Center recently, there was a large contingent of city leaders from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who traveled here to participate in this premier Expo. The Urban Land Institute, with over 40,000 members worldwide, provides leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities across the globe. During the ULI convention, Hernan Vela, General Director of Institutional Affairs and Pablo Perez Paladino, Subdirector Ministry of Urban Development for the city of Buenos Aires, found time to meet with members of the Aventura Marketing Council and members of the ArgentineFlorida Chamber of Commerce to discuss potential business connections. Fernando Levy Hara, developer with G & D Developers said, " As a member of both organizational Boards, and as a native Argentinian, I am aware of how many Argentinians are now living here in South Florida, creating an open pathway to business development between the two cities. I was happy to help coordinate the meetings between my two organizations and Buenos Aires officials." In the September, 2008 issue of Urban Land Magazine, a publication of the ULI, there were feature articles on many Southeast Florida cities, including the City of Aventura and the City of Miami. The Aventura article featured the impact Don Soffer had upon the city….long before it was a city…"In three decades, Don Soffer transformed 785 acres of swampland between Miami and Fort Lauderdale into an incorporated city that continues to reflect his taste and values." "Creating the World's Next Great Waterfront City" is the name of one of multiple articles about Miami…."In the past decade, downtown Miami has been the site of more than $13 billion in private development as well as of an unprece-
dented flow of public investment in transportation projects, cultural venues and parks." For more information on the Urban Land Institute, visit www.uli.org/urbanland

Watch your portion Choose smaller portions and sample a variety of different foods versus larger portions of high calorie/high fat foods Cook with less fat Try using applesauce in place of oil; use egg substitutes in place of whole eggs; try plain nonfat yogurt in place of sour cream Make a toast Instead of high calorie beers, cider, Bailey's and Kahlua; try dry wine, Bloody Mary's or spirits with diet mixers Hit the ground running Wake up in the morning, don't check email or phone messages; just get moving‌ You'll have your

Representatives for the nationally acclaimed StoryCorps Project recently visited the Hebrew Home of South Beach to record the stories of six residents at the assisted living facility and nursing center as part of the StoryCorps Memory Loss Initiative venture. "We were deeply moved and appreciative for the opportunity to recount and preserve our residents' stories for their families and our center," said Marlene Arzola, director of therapeutic activities at Hebrew Home of South Beach. StoryCorps, founded in 2003, is about providing individuals with the facilities to record a true story. Copies go to the individual on a CD and are preserved in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. VIEWPOINT The Republican Party is still dumb BY DONALD KAUL As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, my column pointing out that the Republican Party has become the Party of Dumb seems to have struck a nerve. Ever since it appeared, I have been getting abusive mail from outraged Republicans. Here are just a few examples: “What a stupid jackass you are,” says Kurt B. “It is this same ignorant liberal rant that will keep myself and millions of others like me, fighting you liberal buffoons and your corrosive rhetoric….why don’t you go and crawl back into the liberal cave from which you came and let America remain free and the human race non-tarnished by the likes of you and your ignorant cronies,” Dr. Galen from Arizona. Mark B. weighed in with “What an oxymoron that you wrote an article claiming your apparent enemies are ‘stupid’ yet your column was void of any intelligent thoughts—-surely not any synergized ideas.” And, finally, the classic irate reader response was delivered by Jerry L. of North Carolina—-“Don Kaul’s article calling all Republicans ‘dumb’ in Friday’s paper was the LAST straw. We have decided not to renew our subscription to your newspaper when the time comes.” There were others, some obscene, some merely vulgar. Don’t feel sorry for me; I can take it. (In my defense, I wanted to provide some synergized ideas, but my synergizer was at the cleaners.) Besides, not all of the mail was abusive. Some of it was intelligent. One gentleman, a William M., wrote: “Your…article was spot-on and brutally honest!!! I have thought and felt the same as your own musings for some time, but Sarah pushed the dumbing down of the party over the top!” And Lee S., who confesses to being a college professor, provided me this quotation from the great 19th Century English philosopher John Stuart Mill: “Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people…it is true that most stupid people are conservative.” Mill, by the way, is considered the last man to know everything. The responses do, however, demonstrate two traits common to hard-core Republicans:
1) Their inability to accept constructive criticism and 2) their reluctance to look in the mirror and see themselves as others do. The Republican Party, after all, is the party of vituperation. It is the safe harbor of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter (The Ugh Girl). And they call my rhetoric corrosive? Compared to the venom spewed by that trio of rancid right-wingers, my “attack” on the GOP is a love poem. And these Republicans take no responsibility for George Bush, who has made incompetence into an art form. He leaves office with the economy in a nose-dive, our international reputation in ruins and virtually nothing done about the problems we face in education, energy independence, the environment or the onrushing crisis in unfunded obligations, of which Medicare is merely the most critical. They hardly mention Mr. Bush, their gift to us. They prefer to rail against Barack Obama and the dark pit of socialism into which he’ll throw us. They ignore the fact that Bush is still the president and it is he who is bringing the bounties of socialism to us in a desperate attempt to rescue an economy, which has foundered on his watch. Already you can see signs that the Republican Party is getting ready to blame Obama for the economic hell that it left for him to conquer. You want to talk dumb? When Obama named Hillary Clinton his Secretary of State-designate, the Republican National Committee put out a list of campaign statements Senator Clinton made during her primary fight with Obama. It asked whether the senator “still carries those same, real concerns about Presidentelect Obama and his stances on critical issues confronting the nation.” The country is coming apart at the seams and the Republican Party is still trying to undermine public confidence in the man charged with saving us. Now that’s what I call dumb. I rest my case. — Don Kaul is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-losing Washington correspondent who, by his own account, is right more than he’s wrong. We won, but we can’t relax BY MARC MORIAL There is a tendency in some quarters to see the election of Barack Obama as a magic bullet that will instantly solve all our problems. Some commentators have even suggested that an Obama presidency ushers in a new “post-racial” era that lowers the urgency and takes the spotlight off the need for equal opportunity and economic justice for urban and African Americans. I strongly disagree. This may be a time for celebration, but it’s no time for complacency. While it is true that for the first time in a long time, African Americans and other minorities can feel as though we have a real friend in the White House, we must also understand that the president-elect can only be effective if the same extraordinary coalition of white, black, Hispanic, AsianAmerican, and Native American voters that elected him now works together to support his agenda for change. In my view, the Obama presidency marks the beginning of a new “multi-racial” era in governance that empowers and employs more of the growing diversity that is America’s great strength in solving our common problems. The thing that impressed me the most about the campaign was its ability to bring so many previously disparate parts of America together in common purpose. Candidate Obama liked to say that this election was not so much about him as it was about us. He stressed that change comes from the bottom up, not the other way around. That means that we as citizens and advocates must take an even more active role in governance at all levels. Our voices must continue to be heard from City Hall to the halls of Congress to the White House. I am encouraged that the Obama transition team is putting a high degree of emphasis on building, as Bill Clinton did, an
administration that “looks like America.” But looks are not enough. We still have a lot of work to do. On the one hand, we now have the ultimate successful role model in Barack Obama. On the other hand, we see that fewer than 50 percent of African Americans graduate from high schools in many major American cities. We see a financial crisis with huge numbers of African Americans losing their homes, jobs and life savings. We see an unemployment rate that’s double that of whites, and wide academic achievement gaps. African American males disproportionately populate our prisons. Taken together, these facts underscore the reality that the first black president does not mean we can now all close up shop and go home. People like you and organizations like the National Urban League are more important than ever to lifting up our communities and moving this country forward. In the coming weeks, we will explore some of the most difficult challenges facing the emerging Obama administration - from the needs of our children to the growing importance of minority businesses — and suggest ways we can work together to move our empowerment agenda forward. In five weeks, we will have a new president who campaigned on the promise of change. It is now up to us to help him keep that promise. Marc H. Morial is president and CEO of The National Urban League. Mr. Morial succeeds Hugh B. Price as the League’s eighth Chief Executive. Mr. Morial served two distinguished four-year terms as Mayor of New Orleans from 1994-2002. During that time, he also served as president of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2001 and 2002.

It’s Official: Washington finally admits that we’re in recession Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY For more than a year, we’ve suffered through a weakening economy. We’ve seen our local housing and real estate markets melting down as more and more homeowners face losing their jobs and their homes. We’ve seen huge job losses and some of Americas’ biggest retailers shutting their doors. We’ve seen the U.S. auto industry facing the worst sales in decades and being reduced to asking for government bailouts to keep their factories open. It’s been horrible news for a long time. But only recently did Washington admit we’re in a recession and have been in one since last December. Isn’t that kind of like the captain of the Titanic saying he’s heard there might be icebergs in the North Atlantic? Or General Custer saying there might be some Indians near the Little Big Horn? Why did it take so long for Washington to know there was a historic economic slowdown brewing and why did they wait so long to do anything about it? Didn’t they see prices rising the past few years? Didn’t they see U.S. jobs being cut as companies expanded offshore hiring to cut expenses without any regard for their employees? Didn’t they see families moving into homes they couldn’t afford without anyone making sure they were qualified for the big mortgage payments they agreed to? There’s plenty of blame to go around with all the economic systems that failed. But my first question remains the same: How long did anyone up in Washington know about our failing economy and why wasn’t more done months ago to fix this mess before it got totally out of control? There are two ways to look at it: 1. They weren’t paying attention. 2. Too many people made too much money and it was all intentional. I recently had lunch with some friends who are in federal law enforcement. We wondered about all the billions of dollars worth of taxpayer money that’s being handed out to some of the biggest banks in the country. And we wondered who’s checking it and making sure the money is
going to be used as it was intended? We agreed the potential for financial fraud on a trillion dollar scale is tremendous. If it took this long for Washington to tell us “it’s a recession,” then how long will it take for anyone to tell us “Oops, the money’s gone and we’re not really sure where it went.” FBI WARNS AGAINST CYBER SCAMS Before you check off your holiday gift list, beware, cyber scammers may be on the prowl. And according to the FBI, crooks are getting savvy this holiday season. Some are even setting up fake websites that look legitimate, even sending phony electronic greeting cards to consumers. “They go, oh, it’s a Christmas card, let me open this thing up,” warns Kevin Burton of the FBI’s Cyber-Division. “And what happens after you click on that attachment is that it could download some malicious code.” “Malicious code” means it can be hidden in the email and become activated when you open their file. When it activates, it starts running as a “worm” in your computer system. In some cases, they can unleash viruses that can destroy your computer’s operating system. But in other cases, they can secretly steal your passwords and send that information to identity thieves. Burton cautions that it can include credit card information and banking information which will allow them to compromise your accounts, sell your information and essentially do you economic harm. So what’s the best advice when it comes to protecting yourself? Update your virus software. If a cyber thief does come knocking, he’ll have difficulty getting in. If you are a victim of a cyber crime, you can find help at the FBI’s Internet crime complaint center at ic3.gov. Also, look at the lower corner of your web browser before entering any credit card or payment information, especially before making your next online purchase. Lock for a small icon showing a “Lock.” That means it’s a secure website designed to make it harder for anyone to capture your personal information and use it without your permission.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Leave his girlie magazines alone Q: I’ve been dating my boyfriend off and on for about seven years. We plan to be married in March. My concern is that my boyfriend lives approximately three hours from me and he says he masturbates and has done this for the past seven years using girlie magazines. When he visits, he claims his masturbation stops. When we make love, he says he enjoys it, but sometimes he does not ejaculate. He says he doesn’t always have to ejaculate to enjoy sex with me. Has masturbation caused him not to ejaculate yet still enjoy ssex, or is he lying? Can or will using those magazines
cause him to fantasize to the point of not ejaculating? I’ve destroyed some of his magazines, but he just replaces them. A: It is possible that it is easier for your boyfriend to ejaculate when he masturbates. He may have gotten used to a certain pressure and movement. So the first thing to do is tell him to use your hand and to show you how he masturbates to ejaculation. Don’t even talkg about it; just say that you want to learn to know exactly what pressure he needs and what kind of movement he needs to be able to ejaculate. Since you are already having sex, I am going to assume that living together before marriage would not be against your values or your beliefs, so I would strongly suggest that before you make that ultimate step of a marriage that you do try living together. If it does not help when he shows you how he needs to be stimulated, then before you get married you should go to see a sex therapist. Destroying the magazines is not going to be helpful at all because he might need them when he masturbates in order to concentrate and in order to be able to have an erection.

Design by Design BY SCOTT KIMBALL AND JERI ROSENTHAL KIMBALL When you go into your favorite dress store to buy a new dress for the holidays you normally know what style you like and secondly how much you want to spend. If your salesperson is given this information in advance they can direct you to the perfect dress in style and price range and everyone is happy. Why is it, then, that many people find it difficult to tell their interior designer what they can afford to spend on their interior design project? Some people seem to treat the subject of “the budget” like a game. They think, “if the interior designer thinks I’ve got less than I have I’ll get the whole thing done more cheaply” or “if the interior designer knows how much I’ve got they’ll make sure they spend every penny”. Your budget should be the amount that you are happy to spend to achieve the result that you desire. It is your responsibility as the client to have a clear idea about your budget before you start looking for your designer. You are paying for the designer’s design expertise; ability to source from trade-only
suppliers of furniture, fabrics and accessories; and the time they save you from having to organize and supervise builders, painters, joiners, plumbers, etc. By being honest with your interior designer about your design priorities and your budget, you will receive a design you love. Make sure the designer you choose has a defined fee structure you understand and make sure you get this in writing. Give the designer your budget with as much specific information as possible about your expectations within that budget and clearly state your priorities; if you are expecting to get wood floors throughout your home as your most desired request then make this known. You may want to keep a percentage of your budget in reserve in preparation for any surprises. If the budget runs over (due to surprises like dry rot, electrical or structural problems that are uncovered), you have a cash reserve. If the project runs smoothly, treat yourself with something special for the housewarming party you will want to throw to show off your new home! Let’s pretend that you are an actor and you just received a script. You read it and discover that the role is very different from who you are in your own life. In order to play this role you will have to make many changes in your persona both inside and outside. If you are a good actor you will want people to believe that you are the character they see. If you do a convincing job you might even receive an award. This means that the audience accepts the part you play as the real you. Many people are actors in their own life and they are not aware that they are playing a role. They are living a script that someone else wrote for them. There is a psychological theory that states that everyone is living a life script written by their parents and others. Their role is formed by a series of injunctions they received early in life. These injunctions restrain some actions and encourage other actions. They are often not spoken. As a result of these injunctions, you made decisions at an early age when you lacked sufficient information about yourself and before your logic was completely
developed. You made many of these decisions as a child about how you would act and what role you would play, to ease parental pressure and to make life easier for yourself. You may have adapted but you may have felt angry and resentful when you did. These emotions can last a lifetime. Are you living the life you wrote for yourself or written by someone else? How can you tell the difference? Take the time to think about the beliefs and roles that are part of your life. Take each belief and ask yourself if it is true. Ask those close to you if that is the way they see you. Does it matter if you are who you think you are? It does matter; even actors report how difficult it is to be someone else. Their role is usually temporary but your role may be permanent. Many of the problems and issues in your life can be traced to the early decisions you made about who you are. Regardless of your age, you will benefit from taking a look at the injunctions that are directing your life. After you discover and understand the truth, you will be able to rewrite your script and be your true self. The rewards for this are greater than any other awards you may receive. you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace!” Our face must be looking to God if His face is to shine on us and favor us. (Number 6:23-26) The prophet, Isaiah, spoke on this subject of peace 635 years before the birth of Christ ... Christmas. “For to us a child is born. To us a so is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders and He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. (Isaiah9:6) The promised Messiah will bring everlasting peace on earth for His people; faith in Him will bring everlasting peace in your heart. The popular expression heard at this time of year, “Peace on earth good will toward men” excludes the most important part of the statement declared by the angelic host of the night of the birth of Christ, they said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom God’s favor rests!” (Luke 2:14) My wife, Claudia, and I trust that this will be a season of peace in your heart! Rev. Keyser is Pastor of the Church at Aventura 305-681-1906.
Volumes of documents have been drawn up through the years in hope of establishing lasting peace among the people on earth. Peace is fragile! Man has attempted to live in peace from time immemorial. The scriptures are filled with record of occasions when groups at war tried to settle matters by way of peace treaty. The young nation of Israel was about to enter the land promised to Abraham and his descendants when God spoke through His servant, Moses: “When the Lord your God brings you into the land and drives out the enemy you are not to make a treaty with them.” Why? Because if you make a treaty with them and allow them to live with you in the ‘name of peace,’ they will inter-marry with your sons and daughters and will turn them away from following me and they will serve other gods. You may chose to be at ‘peace’ with them but you will surely not be at peace with your God. Moses was given the key to peace for the Israelites: “This is how you are to bless the Israelites; say to them: ‘The Lord bless
