Gerald Schwartz, a past president of the American Zionist Federation of South Florida, has been elected president of the Southeast Region of Bnai Zion Foundation. Bnai Zion is 101 years old and has been funding humanitarian causes since its inception. They have five current projects, including Bnai Zion Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, a 450 bed hospital that delivers 5,000 babies each year.

Schwartz, a resident of Aventura, will work closely with Eileen Glatstein, a resident of North Miami Beach, to expand the activities of B'nai Zion in Florida.

He also is past national chairman of Friends of NA'AMAT USA and a past national vice president of the American Zionist Movement, the umbrella agency of Zionist organizations in the United States of which B'nai Zion is a member.

Schwartz is past president of the Miami Beach Lodge of B'nai B'rith and is chairman of the Prime Minister's Society of State of Israel Bonds for South Florida. He also is chairman of deferred giving for the Jewish National Fund of Greater Miami and past president of the Civic League of Greater Miami.

VIEWPOINT May is Jewish American Heritage Month

BY CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ May is Jewish American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions Jewish people have made to American History. President Obama made an official proclamation recognizing May as Jewish American Heritage Month on May 12, 2009.

Earlier this month, Representative Wasserman Schultz made the following floor statement about Jewish American Heritage Month: “Mr. Speaker, I rise to commemorate the fourth annual Jewish American Heritage Month, which takes place in communities across the country each May. “Jewish American Heritage Month promotes awareness of the contributions American Jews have made to the fabric of American life, from technology and literature to entertainment, politics, and medicine.

“As we are all well aware, the foundation of our country is built upon the strengths of our unique cultures and backgrounds. Yet, while our diversity is America's strength, ignorance and intolerance about the culture, traditions, and accomplishments of the Jewish people are still prevalent. Jews make up only 2 percent of our Nation's population, and, therefore, most Americans have had few interactions with Jews and our traditions.

“I personally experienced this lack of knowledge when I was a student in the dorms at the University of Florida. While at school, a fellow student noticed my name and said, ``Wow, you're Jewish? I've seen pictures, but I've never met a real one.''

“Now, this girl did not mean any harm, but the limited understanding of the Jewish people and our historical role in the Nation's development leads to ignorance, which contributes to stereotypes and prejudices.

“According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's most recent Hate Crimes Statistics report, 68.4 percent of criminal incidents motivated by religious bias stemmed from anti-Jewish prejudice. Additionally, due to a lack of understanding, some Americans perceive Judaism as only a religion, when, in reality, Judaism is a religion, a rich tradition, and a culture that dates back 4,000 years. Mr. Speaker, this is why communities across the country have come together to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month.

“A few years ago, the Jewish community in South Florida approached me with the idea to honor the contributions of American Jews with a designated month each year. As the concept gained momentum, 250 of my colleagues joined me as original cosponsors of a

resolution urging the President to issue a proclamation for this month. Senator Arlen Specter led the effort in the Senate, and together the House and Senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting the creation of Jewish American Heritage Month. In May of 2006, we celebrated this important occasion for the first time and have been celebrating each May since then.

“Now, the month of May introduces Jewish culture to the entire country and dispels harmful prejudices. Like Black History Month and Women's History Month, Jewish American Heritage Month recognizes the abundance of contributions American Jews have made to the United States over the last 353 years. It is my hope that by providing the framework for the discussion of Jewish culture and contributions to our Nation, we will be able to reduce the ignorance that ultimately leads to anti-Semitism.

“One way Jewish American Heritage Month counters these prejudices is by providing educators the opportunity to include American Jews in discussions of history, as well as highlighting the leadership of members of the Jewish community in significant historical events.

“For example, it might surprise many to learn that it was an American Jew, Irving Berlin, who wrote the lyrics to the song, ``God Bless America.'' Even the very foundations of our country were impacted by Jews. Haym Salomon, a Jewish man, was one of the largest financiers of the American Revolution War. And Rabbi Joachim Prinz was a passionate civil rights activist, appearing on the podium just moments before Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his ``I Have a Dream'' speech. And the list goes on.

“This year's Jewish American Heritage Month has been packed with programs celebrating the contributions of American Jewry to our countries with movies, cultural exhibitions, speakers, and innovative educational curricula. Right here in Washington, the United Jewish Communities and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington will be hosting a reception for Members of Congress and members of the Jewish community. J Street will also be hosting a reception to celebrate May as Jewish American Heritage Month with Members of Congress, their staff, and the Jewish community.

“But that is not all. The Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration will be hosting lectures, exhibits, and discussions about Jewish contributions to America. In my home State of Florida, there will be a celebration of Jewish contributions to the civil rights movement, and the major league Florida Marlins baseball team will host a Jewish Heritage game, with kosher food and Jewish music in between

Questions U.S. participation, funding of AntiIsrael, Anti-U.S. UN Human Rights Council

Ileana RosLehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today at a hearing questioned Deputy Secretary of State Jacob Lew about U.S. participation in and funding of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “How could a Human Rights Council including the likes of Cuba, China, Saudi Arabia, and Russia as full members possibly advance the cause of human rights?

How is it worthy of U.S. participation and taxpayer dollars? How will it advance U.S. interests and values?

“Already, the false rhetoric equating U.S. behavior with that of the world’s worst human rights abusers has begun.

We can only imagine what this rogues’ gallery has in store for the U.S. and Israel over the next three years.

“Likewise, how can the U.S. possibly claim that we are closely scrutinizing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency when we do not even condition our funding on that agency vetting its staff and personnel through U.S. watch lists for ties to

Palestinian militant groups?

“Congress must ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars are being spent responsibly.

Taxpayer money must not be wasted on an organization which works to undermine us and demonize strong U.S. allies like Israel.

“I am greatly disappointed that we are committing our country’s good name and our taxpayers’ money to this structurally corrupted body without seeking reform first.

Note: At Wednesday’s hearing, Deputy Secretary Lew later stated that the U.S. gives the troubled UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), to which the U.S. is the largest contributor, “the highest level of scrutiny.”

Members of Aventura Marketing Council's Business Development Committee recently gathered at the beautiful Le Meridien Sunny Isles Beach where they had the opportunity to meet and hear first-hand stories of Israeli front-line soldier Lt. Micki Ohaion.

23-year old Ohaion is a Paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He fought in the 2006 second Lebanon War, stationed as the company commander's radio operator as well as in this past year's Operation Ofert Yetzuka in Gaza stationed as a platoon leader. He is decorated for the Gaza Operation in which he led his platoon in house-to-house fighting, rescuing a Palestinian family in a booby trapped home.

Lt. Ohaion's visit to South Florida is part of "Operation Maccabee," an effort sponsored by the State of Israel Bonds, in which eight IDF soldiers who participated in 'Operation Cast Lead,' Israel's response to thousands of terrorist rockets fired from Gaza, have been invited to share their stories with groups throughout the U.S. "Our AMC members particularly enjoyed this meeting as was evidenced in the overflow turnout," said AMC Business Development Chairman Peter L. Fishel, CPA. "Lt. Ohaion's presentation was very real, and communicated so many significant and powerful messages. From his youthful age to his immense responsibility to his country, Ohaion made an astounding impression on us all."

Mount Sinai Medical Center selects Nurse of the Year, names nursing scholarship recipients as part of National Nurses Week celebration Mount Sinai Medical Center marked National Nurses Week by rewarding 22 outstanding nurses and presenting five employees with scholarships to defray the cost of their nursing school expenses.

Each of the scholarship winners, all of whom are studying to become nurses, received a $1,000 award made possible by Jane and Jerrold Goodman and Jerrold Goodman's late mother, Ruth Schwartz. The scholarships have been awarded annually since 1994 to full-time employees, based on the caliber of their work, school performance and customer service skills. Longtime members of the hospital's philanthropic family, Jerrold and Jane Goodman are Founders of Mount Sinai and benefactors in the Society of Mount Sinai. Schwartz also was a Founder and a member of the Society.

Goodman Scholarship recipients included Samantha Vega, Mabel Lezcano, Mahe Otero, Hyacinth SewellHenry and Daphene Pierre.

In addition, Mahe Otero also was named Nurse of the Year. She also was among 22 individuals named "Nurse of

the Unit," based on nominations by their directors. Celia, a Slave In 1855, the Missouri Supreme Court held that enslaved women had no recourse when raped by their masters. It is difficult for us to imagine the inhumanity of that decision and the brutality that existed in the lives of slaves, particularly women, throughout the American South prior to the Civil War. The case of Celia is illustrative of their plight.

According to historian Annette Gordon Reed (The Hemingses of Monticello), in 1850, the recently widowed slave owner Robert Newsom purchased fourteen-year-old Celia solely for sexual gratification. Newsom then raped her on their way home from the auction. He then built a small cabin for her near his home and continued to prey on her, despite her continual objections. During the following five years, Celia bore two of Newsom’s children, both of whom by law became Newsom’s property. Celia then became involved with George, a fellow slave on

the plantation. She became pregnant and was unsure which man was the father.

George told Celia that he would have nothing more to do with her if she did not stop having sexual relations with Newsom.

Celia pleaded with Newsom to leave her alone, however, he dismissed her objections, advising he was coming for her that night. That evening, as Newsom tried to force sex upon Celia, she struck him with a stick, killing him.

Celia’s court appointed attorney pleaded self-defense against the continual rape, citing the Missouri statute forbidding anyone “to take any woman unlawfully against her will and by force, menace or duress, compel her to be defiled.” The judge instructed the jury that the enslaved Celia could not raise the issue of self-defense because she did not fit within the meaning of “any woman,” and that she was simply “property.” He instructed that “Newsom owned her and if he came to her house for sex or otherwise, he had the right to have his demands complied with and Celia, a slave, had no honor to protect and could not resist his advances.” Celia was found guilty of murder. The Missouri Supreme Court upheld the decision and Celia was hanged.

They don’t share same desire Q: Up until two months ago, my husband and I had a great sex life. But now he loses his erection every time we try to have intercourse. My husband is 34, and I am 33, I am very concerned because I am trying to get pregnant, and it is very frustrating knowing that I’m only fertile for about 2-4 days a cycle. I need some advice on how to help my husband.

A: Did you notice that you wrote “I am trying to get pregnant” - not “we”? It seems to me that while you desire a baby, your husband is not so sure, and so his subconscious is causing him to lose his erections so that he cannot cause a pregnancy. I suggest that the two of you talk some more about the prospects of having a baby so that you can discover whether or not he really wants to have one.

Q: I have difficulty having an orgasm during sex. Nothing is wrong with my sex drive. I masturbate daily and always have plenty of very strong orgasms when I’m on my own. So why is it so hard for me to orgasm when I am with someone? If i do

reach orgasm during sex, it is always in the “cowgirl” position. It seems as if I need a lot of stimulation - or is there some way you can practice and improve your ability to have an orgasm during sex? I find it too embarrassing to stimulate myself while I’m with somebody, because I fear it might put them down, as if they’re not good enough to please me.

Could this problem have something to do with the fact that I don’t have a steady boyfriend - that I don’t know the guys I’m with well enough? I always have safe sex, so it’ not that I worry about diseases or something. I’m not particularly shy, and I like my body, but perhaps I am a little too uptight. The guy I’m having an affair with is doing everything right, and if there’s something he’s not doing right, i would tell him - I have no problems talking about sex. i refuse to start faking, but I desperately want to orgasm to show him I enjoy having sex with him. Am I trying to hard?

A: First of all, there is no such thing as “safe” sex, only safer sex. Condoms have been known to break or slip off, so the risks do exist, and knowing about those risks could be sufficiently distracting to keep you from having an orgasm. Another reason could be that you don’t know these men. Not only is it safer if you have a relationship with a sexual partner, but then the man will have had more time to learn your needs and have more incentive as well. So try to stop having casual sex, and see if this doesn’t help the situation.

Kelly Mallette, Mayor and Commission to address public safety concerns in the Village of Biscayne Park. Miami-Dade Public Works recently completed painting stop bars along the roadways of the Village, ensuring that drivers were aware of a need to stop at specific intersections and delineating the roadway from the grass with markers.

"My office was happy to assist the Village of Biscayne Park in securing funding to address this safety issue," said Comm. Heyman.

"Public safety remains a priority for all of us."

The project was completed on March 25, 2009 within the boundaries of NE 121st Street, NE 107th Street, Griffing Boulevard, and NE 11th Place.

Another recent success of the private - public partnership was originally initiated by Comm. Chester "Doc" Morris who brought in original seed money for their Parks Department that was matched by the Village of Biscayne Park. In turn, Miami-Dade County matched an additional $25,000 in funding from the Safe Neighborhood Parks grant program for a pavilion providing much-needed shade for park patrons.

A full kitchen remodeling is a large financial undertaking and with the current state of the economy, most people do not want to invest that kind of money into a household project. That does not mean you have to live with your current kitchen until the limping economy bounces back.

There are some do-it-yourself projects that can still help transform your current kitchen into a cozy comfortable haven sooner rather than later. Even if you have a small budget, you can still create a fresh looking new kitchen.

Replacing your kitchen cabinet hardware is the simplest and easiest change that you can make and it will have a huge impact. This change will only take a few minutes. Finding new pulls and knobs is as easy as going to your local hardware store or home improvement store.

You can find a good-looking decora-

tive light fixture at any lighting, hardware or home improvement store. Get rid of the ugly recessed fluorescent light in the middle of the ceiling. Your fixture does not have to hug the ceiling. Be brave and consider a chandelier. A new light fixture will brighten up the space and add a decorative element.

A fresh coat of paint is one of the least expensive ways to transform any space in your home and the kitchen is no exception.

Start with the ceiling. Paint it a bright clean white and the whole room will light up.

Your kitchen walls can also use a change.

Choose a color that will blend with the tone of the cabinets and flow into the adjoining rooms. Try painting the main wall a bold color to make a strong statement.

Replacing an old, scratched sink is easier and cheaper than you might think. While you are at it, don’t forget about updating the faucet.

If you still have money left in your budget, you can consider changing the floors, changing out counter tops or replacing outdated appliances. BY SOROUSH AGHIGH M.D. An estimated 19 million people in the United States suffer from depression. And with the current economic crisis, experts predict that the number will grow. With many South Floridians facing the threat of job losses and home foreclosures, it is easy to understand why anxiety and depression may be growing within our communities.

It’s natural to feel said, lonely and angry at times, and there things you can do to help handle these feelings. You may want to try some of the following: • Practice thinking positively • Exercise. Running, walking or other activities such as gardening can help improve your mood.

• Socialize with friends • Have a massage or get your hair cut - something that makes you feel better about yourself • Turn to a trusted friend or family member to share your feelings • Help someone else by volunteering If your symptoms of sadness last for two weeks or more, you may be suffering from a medical condition known as clinical depression. The symptoms of depression can seem

similar to the common sadness or stress we all feel, but become more severe over time.

They include: • Sudden weight gain or loss • Sudden loss of interest in personal hygiene • Staying in bed for many hours a day • Loss of energy and restless sleep • Alienating friends and family • Poor performance at school or work • Lack of interest in social activities • Procrastination, confusion or forgetfulness If you think you, a friend or family member might be clinically depressed, do not try to handle it on your own. Hungry?

You can be hungry for things that are physical like food, or emotional like happiness or spiritual and psychological like inner peace. If you are hungry for something it means there is a lack of it in your life. Human nature will drive you to satisfy that hunger.

There are many methods to satisfy each and every yearning you have. Picture a large buffet table full of options. You are free to pick whatever will satisfy you and your hunger. You can choose from the various forms of religion, psychological therapy, and self- help such as; yoga, meditation, and hypnosis to name a few.

Before you choose you need to see and understand all of your options. One of the least understood and more controversial methods available is self-hypnosis. Many people are unaware of its true nature. They think of the person they saw on the stage or on a television show performing silly acts at the suggestion of the hypnotist. As a result they are unaware of the positive and powerful way it can change their life.

Hypnosis provides a direct line to your sub-

conscious. It is a powerful method of concentrating your energy on something that you wish to change and acquire. It allows you to harness the power of your subconscious and focus intensely on one important goal until you achieve it.

It begins with the process of deep breathing and deep relaxation. Lie down and get comfortable. Breathe deeply and relax your body. At the same time, clear your mind of extraneous and mundane thoughts. Then begin by visualizing the peaceful state you wish to experience.

Create this state in great detail in your mind and actually become part of the scene you are creating. See and feel everything including the emotions generated by your visualization. Continue by giving yourself positive suggestions. These should be well worded, repetitive and very vivid. Use fantasy as well. Because your subconscious cannot tell the difference between fact and fantasy, it will strive to create that which you express a desire for. The more you can use your imagination to visualize the end result, the more successful you will be in achieving it. Do not hesitate to try it. It is satisfying and you will enjoy the results.

How to ‘eat out and stay in shape’

BY BARI AUERBACH “Hold everything!” Before you have to tell another impatient waiter to hold the cream sauce, butter, French fries, saturated fat and quantum calories, why not discover some of the most healthful (and yes, tasteful) dishes you can easily order at Aventura area restaurants.

‘Break for Better B reakfasts’ One of the most popular neighborhood breakfast gathering places is Mo’s Bagels.

Once you manage to make it past the bakery display cases without losing your willpower, the next challenge will be forsaking the pancakes with extra syrup.

The good news is a very good “good for you” alternative is an egg white omelet - just be sure to ask for it to be made without butter and try fillings like tomatoes - or turkey for an extra protein burst.

When it comes to carbs, oatmeal is your best bet for breakfast – but avoid sweetening this low-glycemic choice with packets of sugar! Another hot calorie-saving tip relates to your hot coffee. Instead of reaching for the little silver dispenser or creamers, ask your server to bring over some skim milk.

Finally, if the thought of eating breakfast at Mo’s without ordering a bagel seems almost sacrilegious, try eating just half instead of the whole thing and opt for the reduced fat cream cheese. Mo’s menu also now features lowcarb breads and bagels, sugar free desserts, healthful pita pocket sandwiches and wraps, steamed fish, accompaniments such as brown rice and vegetables plus new specialty drinks like freshly squeezed vegetable juice.

Aston Martin DB9 sparks memories of James Bond Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS I had my James Bond moment recently when they delivered a gorgeous new 2009 charcoal grey Aston Martin DB9 as our test car for the week.

Aston Martin is one of the most storied names in automotive history. Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, the company has a checkered past of fading in and out of bankruptcy and passing through a series of wealthy owners.

The name was derived by combining one founder’s surname with the Aston Hill climb near Buckinghamshire, England.

Today the British luxury sports car manufacturer is controlled by a joint venture company co-owned by a pair of Kuwaiti investment companies and English businessman John Sinders. Ford Motor Company owned the company from 1994 until 2007 before selling it for $848 million, but hanging on to a $77 million stake.

Any James Bond aficionado will tell you that Aston Martin is 007’s preferred automobile. The car has been featured in many Bond films, which only served to heighten the Aston Martin mystique and appeal.

Bond’s cinema love affair with the car started in Goldfinger (1964) when he drove a silver DB5 and continued in Thunderball (1965) and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), then later in GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997).

After an interlude with Lotus cars, Bond returned to Aston Martin and drove a Volante and a Vantage in The Living Daylights (1987), and a Vanquish in Die Another Day (2002). In Casino Royale (2006), he drives the classic DB5, which becomes his personal vehicle after winning a poker game, and the new DBS in the latest Bond flick, Quantum of Solace.

Our test car, a sleek and beautiful charcoal gray DB9 (The initials honor David Brown, who bought the company in 1947 and guided it until 1972, when it again went through a series of new owners.) is one of the best selling Aston Martins ever, with more than 10,000 sold around the world since its introduction in 2003.

formance and dynamics. The DB9 is perfectly proportioned, with a long hood and two-seat cabin that create a recognizable silhouette with short front and rear overhangs. A wide track pushes out the rear wheels and enhances the design and styling.

Under the hood, there’s a 6.0 liter 470 bhp (20 more horses than last year) quadcam 32-valve engine mated to a refined automatic transmission that has a new hydraulic control unit for quicker and more precise low-speed gear changes and improved low speed maneuverability.

Downshifts in the Sports mode are also enhanced as a result of engine speed matching, which delivers smoother and more rapid gear changes in both paddle shift and drive mode.

Price tag on our 2009 Aston Martin DB9 was $208,000.
