Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino hosts 61st Florida Kentucky Derby

B

y the time Take Charge Indy crossed the finish line in the 61st running of the Florida Derby, Gulfstream Park was well on its way to setting records in its state-of-the-art facility. And it was all witnessed by a national television audience…the largest audience of the day on the NBC Sports Network. The historic Florida Derby, which has produced 21 Kentucky Derby winners, was a huge success Saturday, March 31. From 6 a.m. in the morning – when ABC affiliate WPLG did their first live broadcast of the morning from the track – to 10 p.m. and the final notes of a free concert in the walking ring, Gulfstream was the focus of

the national racing world and the local community. A record crowd of more than 18,000 people, some from as far away as California, Vancouver and Venezuela, came to Gulfstream to celebrate one of the world’s most important thoroughbred races. And while the popular favorite Union Rags didn’t win the race, the day, as well as the entire week, was a huge success. Not only was the crowd of more than 18,000 the largest on any day since Gulfstream’s new facility was constructed in 2006, but Gulfstream set a new standard for total handle on a single day with $24.6 million wagered on its 13 races, including a record $2.98 million on track.

Against the odds, Eibar walked out of the hospital in just six weeks. Now in outpatient rehabilitation at Memorial Hospital West, Eibar credits his remarkable recovery to an extraordinary team devoted to patient- and family-centered care. “As an athlete, I can tell when everyone is on the same team. Be Sure To Open Your Vents

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Pressure is the action of a constant force on a body or object. It can come from the outside or the inside. Pressure can take different forms; the urgency to work under pressure is one. It can be a difficulty or affliction as when you are under financial pressure. It can be constraining as when pressure is brought to bear on you. You can feel the weight of the pressure and the demands. You feel the tension, stress and strain. The pressure to be or act a certain way comes from the outside initially. Later it comes from inside of you. Your pressures become self-imposed. Traditional strategies like working out and relaxing are not always enough. You have to discover and open up your psychological, emotional and mental vents. One way to do that is to become aware that your pressures come from

your own deep-seated wants, needs and fears. Start by writing down a fear like the fear of being fired. Then list all of the reasons why you fear it. You might be ashamed and feel inadequate. You might disappoint and let your loved ones down, and so on. Keep writing until you have completely explored your fear. Then relate it to your wants and needs. Be sure to separate your wants from your needs. I want to be successful but I need to be respected and admired. Spend a sufficient amount of time examining your deepest feelings. Be totally honest no one but you will see this list. Do not judge yourself simply write what you think and feel. Once you understand what you really want and need the fear will dissipate. The pressure will be off. You will realize that you can satisfy your wants and needs without pressure. You can still achieve success, for example, but it won’t be fear driven. You will have opened the vents to let the pressure escape. It will no longer be a part of your life. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino GULFSTREAM, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––– “The energy and excitement in our facility was extraordinary,” said Gulfstream President and General Manager Timothy Ritvo. “The weather was perfect, the quality of racing was unparalleled, our jockeys and horses all returned safely, and our fans had a wonderful experience. “Record-setting days like (March 31) celebrate the vision of our Chairman, Mr. Frank Stronach.” Gulfstream’s legacy of giving extended throughout Florida Derby with several events that raised money for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (pdjf.org) and the Gulfstream Park Thoroughbred After-Care Program (gpaftercare.com). The March 27 Florida Derby Golf Tournament, held at the Westin Diplomat Golf Resort, attracted more than 120 players. The March 29 poker tournament, Aces for Aftercare, drew more than 100 players. Meanwhile, Gulfstream’s walking ring – which has become the focus of The Village at Gulfstream Park with its colored, shooting fountains – was the site of the official Florida Derby party March 30, with all the proceeds from live and silent auctions going to the permanently disabled jockeys and Gulfstream’s after-care program. The following morning, Derby morning, fans started staking their places in Gulfstream’s picnic and tiki area as early as 7 a.m. By the time the starting gates opened for the $1 million Florida Derby at 5:48 p.m. - the seventh stakes race of the afternoon – the crowd of more than 18,000 was ready to crown a new Florida Derby winner and Kentucky Derby favorite. The winner, Take Charge Indy, was given a rousing ovation as he entered the floral-filled winner’s circle to the delight of three-time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel, trainer Pat Byrne, owners Chuck and Maribeth Sandford, and a national television audience. It was a fitting ending to a record day at Gulfstream Park.

An Open Letter to President Obama

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS On occasion, you have made positive reference to words from Progressive Republican President Teddy Roosevelt. Kindly consider posthumously correcting Teddy’s biggest blunder in his otherwise outstanding presidential career, by your revoking his order concerning the 25th Infantry and granting an honorable discharge, with survivorship benefits, to the 160 Negro soldiers. On August 16, 1906 Teddy was advised by the Mayor of Brownsville Texas that some 20-30 Negro soldiers had earlier left the Garrison, fired rifles in town, killing a resident. Roosevelt ordered a report. The 25th Infantry, some 160 Negro soldiers, had arrived in Brownsville weeks earlier and” local racial tensions rose.” Commanding Officer Penrose restricted all Negro soldiers to quarters. Late one evening, “the men were aroused by the sound of rifle shots fired from outside the post.” Penrose immediately ordered a roll call with arms. All soldiers were accounted for; their rifles found to be clean. There were no

credible eyewitnesses to the shooting. The Mayor presented empty cartridge shells found in the local streets. Penrose acknowledged that the discharged shells were identical to those supplied to the Negro soldiers. All Negro soldiers professed innocence of any crime. Inspector General Blocksom concluded that “it must have been the Negro soldiers and others must have known of the plan.” The report was sent to Roosevelt. Believing it was a “conspiracy of silence,” Roosevelt ordered the entire Negro company dishonorably discharged, including six Medal of Honor winners. The men forfeited all pension and military rights. Editorial comment was severe against Roosevelt. Senator Joseph Foraker, a Civil War veteran, after demanding an investigation, declared that the evidence against the Negro soldiers was clearly insufficient for any finding of guilt. The expert proof established “that the spent shells were used by the Negro troops at their prior post for target practice, saved by the government and made available to the public at Brownsville.” Foraker concluded that the “Negro troops had nothing to do with the shooting, that local residents perpetrated the crime and blamed it on the Negro soldiers.” It is revealing that in Teddy’s autobiography, the Brownsville incident was strangely omitted.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center joins trial to reduce risk of stroke Agreement established with Gore REDUCE Clinical Study to explore whether PFO closure reduces the risk of recurrent strokes.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is proud to announce its participation in the G o re “REDUCE” Clinical Study for the closure of PFO defects in patients with stroke. The study will determine whether PFO closure is as effective as or better than standard medical therapy in preventing a recurrent stroke. “PFO is a small hole in the heart that a person is born with, which is pretty common,” said Principal Investigator Roberto Cubeddu, MD, Medical Director of Structural Heart Disease at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “For patients with an unknown cause for their recurrent strokes, PFO may be

directly related.” In fetuses, the patent foramen ovale (PFO) allows circulation to occur as the lungs develop. After birth the opening usually closes, but in approximately 20 to 25 percent of adults the hole does not close. If the opening is present in adults, blood clots can potentially travel through this hole to the brain and cause strokes. The study will randomize patients with prior history of stroke and PFO into two groups who will receive varying anti-stroke therapies. One test group will undergo PFO closure using the GORE HELEX Septal Occluder, while the other will receive antiplatelet

medical management such as aspirin and Plavix. An interdisciplinary effort, Dr. Cubeddu will be assisted by CoInvestigator Jonathan Cross, MD, Director of Stroke. “This trial will precisely answer whether or not closing a PFO defect will reduce the risk for subsequent stroke,” said Dr. Cross. “Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is always looking for ways to stay at the forefront of care by participating in groundbreaking clinical studies such as this one,” said Heather Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “I congratulate Dr. Robert Cubeddu and our excellent

research team for spearheading this clinical trial to improve our quality of care.” If you know a patient between the ages of 18 and 59 who has been diagnosed with an ischemic stroke or suffer from recurrent strokes, think they may have PFO and would be willing to participate in this study please call Joseph McConnell, Clinical Research Coordinator at 305-682-7322.

Adventures in Dining “In”

Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer

EAT THIS... DRINK THAT Dining out has historically served as the ideal way to celebrate a special occasion, to pass the time on a Friday or Saturday night, go on a date, or romance a loved one. With so many amazing restaurants in Miami, it is possible to eat out every single night of the week – and then have more to try. But, while eating out is fun and glamorous, it is also expensive. And for those with allergies, dietary issues, wanting to lose weight, and the like, it is more difficult to eat out. After all, do you ever truly know what your meal is made with and how it is prepared? With that said, there is an alternative eating in. While certainly not as exciting and there is less people watching going on, it does have its merits. Let’s begin with the fact that it can be cost effective. You can eat well and not break the bank. If you take the time, you can find interesting foods of all kinds to try. I was at Lorenzo’s earlier today picking up pastrami turkey for lunch when I passed by the fresh pasta counter. For $4.99 a pound, I purchased freshly made gnocchi (for those who do not know this incredible item, gnocchi are little round dumplings made of potatoes and flour or semolina). You can eat them with red gravy (sauce), browned butter, Alfredo, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Mine actually came with a container of pre-made cream sauce adding even more value to the already inexpensive meal. I’ll start with a salad and voila- instant meal. But there’s more to eating at home than just getting a bargain. This weekend, my husband and I decided that we wanted to stay in. In preparation for Easter Sunday (on Saturday) we ran to our neighborhood Costco in North Miami Beach and began thinking about what we could make for dinner on Saturday night and then, on Sunday. In lieu of going out to a steakhouse or sushi place on Saturday, we

bought two lobster tails ($25.50) and a pound of U-8 shrimp ($15.50). So what was for dinner Saturday night? We pulled the lobster tails and shrimp. They were both frozen fresh. They thawed in no time and we simply steamed them. We like variety when we eat, so we grilled half of a turkey sausage ($2.50) and cut it up into pieces and placed it next to the shrimp on a giant wooden cutting board, which would double as a serving piece. We then headed into the garden and picked basil and all kinds of tomatoes including black krim, patio, beefsteak, Mr. Stripey, yellow cherry and red grape tomatoes. Perfect! We diced some of the fruit, adding salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar, and the fresh basil to create an artisan bruschetta. Then, with the tomatoes that were not yet used, we sliced them and paired them with Burrata (which is a cheese similar to mozzarella. We bought at the Yellow Greenmarket for $5 earlier that day). We added salt, pepper, and a balsamic glaze. We looked around the house and found – a can of olives, a bottle of roasted red peppers, and some wheat crackers. They’re all placed onto the serving board. Then to finish the meal, a bottle of sparkling wine, which we always have chilling in the fridge. Delish. With so much food, we decided to leave the lobster for Sunday. And Sunday evening, we threw them onto the grill accompanied by approximately 2 dozen cherry and grape tomatoes. They were served over a bed of wilted spinach (which you can purchase in any market for a few dollars) and there it was. Dinner was so satisfying, low in calories and fat, and reasonable! It cost a total of $40 for two decent sized lobster tails and eight huge shrimp. That is less than one entrée in most steak houses! So when you are looking for a great night in, do it yourself! You’ll be glad you did!

Always driven to combine the best representation with education, Snyder & Gonzalez, P.A., a renowned personal injury/criminal defense law firm, explains why it’s beneficial to ensure your auto insurance is providing the best protection possible. According to attorney Barry Snyder, beyond PIP, Florida drivers need uninsured motorist coverage. “Uninsured motorist coverage pays for expenses above and beyond PIP including additional medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, future expenses for disability impairment as well as medical expenses anticipated to be incurred. “Uninsured motorist coverage is also your protection against drivers who don’t carry bodily injury liability insurance and hurt YOU. Considering many Florida motorists drive without insurance, have no license due to immigration problems and are not required by law to carry bodily injury liability insurance, it’s important to have uninsured motorist coverage.” Although it’s possible to save by not purchasing bodily injury liability insurance, Snyder points out what you can stand to lose if you don’t have it. “If you injure someone in an accident that’s your fault, you can lose your driver’s license until you pay all the damages for the injuries you caused. What’s more, the

Julio Muñoz, Barry Snyder and Victor Gonzalez insurance company will not pay for an attorney to defend you in the event of a lawsuit that can result in exorbitant legal defense fees.” To make sure you don’t get “taken for a ride,” Snyder & Gonzalez suggests choosing a reputable insurance company in lieu of a substandard one that’s the least inexpensive or follows the philosophy “deny, delay, don’t pay.” Addressing the question, “Should I use my grandparents’ address to get a lower rate,” Snyder says, “It’s always wise to be as accurate and truthful as possible on applications because if an insurance company investigating an accident determines false information was provided, they have the right to deny coverage.”

Transform your body with ‘The 17 Day Diet’ BY BARI AUERBACH The 17 Day Diet, created by Dr. Mike Moreno, is a weight loss plan that was initially created to avoid holiday weight gain - but the great thing about the diet is that it can be used at any time throughout the year to shed a few pounds. Recently featured on the Dr. Phil Show and The Doctors, Moreno explains how The 17 Day Diet can help “reset” your metabolism and transform your body in just 17 days. So why is 17 days the magic number? According to Moreno, “There are no plateaus, there’s no boredom, and every seventeen days, you’re changing what you’re doing. We call it metabolic, or body, confusion.” The 17 Day Diet is a cycled eating plan that alters the amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fats you eat every few days. Divided across four cycles, each is designed to accomplish a different objective: Burning fat, resetting the metabolism and teaching you proper portion control and hunger signs. This clean eating plan avoids sugar, processed foods, fried foods and other heavy dishes, while teaching your body to crave and nourish itself through healthy foods such as lean proteins and vegetables. These are the four cycles of The 17 Day Diet: Cycle 1: Accelerate: Encourages rapid weight loss, cleansing and fat burning. Discourages fat storage. Cycle 2: Activate: Resets the metabolism. Cycle 3: Achieve: Develop good eating habits, re-teach yourself how to eat carbs

Cycle 4: Arrive: A combination of the first three Cycles. On weekends, enjoy your favorite foods. Positive reviews for The 17 Day Diet emphasize the cycling component of varying what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat which has shown promise in helping to accelerate weight loss. Other benefits include the very clear and organized eating plan promoting nutritious foods. The 17 Day Diet also features a 17minute exercise routine as well as tips and strategies to avoid food pitfalls. For example, during holiday times, Moreno encourages you to “pre-diet” - which means eating a healthful dinner before attending parties or other festive occasions that are food-focused. And when you’re at the party, he advises choosing only two to three of the healthiest appetizers. You’re also encouraged to stay away from the buffet table and “just say no thanks” to desserts and candy. For more information, or to order a copy of “The 17 Day Diet” visit the17daydiet.com

22nd Annual Yom HaShoah Memorial Program at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center The name of the day that honors Holocaust victims is Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah , which means “day of remembrance of the Holocaust and heroism.” Yom HaShoah is observed on the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan. This date was selected by the Israeli Knesset on April 12, 1951 because it falls between the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and Israel’s Independence Day. Because there is no official way to recognize Yom HaShoah, Jewish communities have enacted their own unique traditions. Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center has established its meaningful Yom HaShoah Holocaust Memorial which will take place on Sunday, April 15 at 10:15 a.m. The program will include candle lighting procession by Religious School students and Yiddish and Hebrew songs performed by Cantor David Muchnick.

ATJC will also welcome guest speaker Michael Finkelstein, grandson of ATJC members who survived the Holocaust, Sally and the late Carl Finkelstein. Holocaust melodies will be performed by renowned musical guests, the Amernet String Quartet, which is ensemble-in-residence at Florida International University. The Quartet is one of the most acclaimed ensembles of its generation and has been praised for its intelligence and ravishing sound since its inception in 1991. Community members are encouraged to attend. For more information contact 305-937-1880, rsvp@atjc.org, or atjc.org. Valet parking provided. She is the primary caregiver and can’t afford to burn out herself. What should she do? A year after his stroke, David still has a hard time speaking. Is further recovery possible, or is he just wasting his retirement savings paying for more rehab? As people age, they often need help and guidance – and Plaza Health Network is inaugurating a new way to deliver that guidance, via its free Health Care Café education series. “Older people urgently need trustworthy health information,” says Dr. William Zubkoff, President and CEO, Plaza Health Network. “They may need to know how to cope with the aftermath of stroke, how to manage chronic diseases such as diabetes or how to be effective caregivers. Our complimentary Health Care Cafés bring them in contact with leading health care experts who can answer their questions, discuss sensitive health issues and address concerns. Held at locations throughout Miami-Dade, Plaza’s Health Care Cafés bring experts from

a range of disciplines together with seniors, to discuss important issues, to answer audience questions and to share the latest insights on a range of health-related topics. Mount Sinai Medical Center Achieves Positive Net Income for the Third Consecutive Year

BY LEE STEPHENS For the third year in a row, Mount Sinai Medical Center’s mission-driven operations have brought positive earnings and reinforced the medical center’s strong image as a healthcare leader and community resource. Mount Sinai’s 2011 audited net income was $13.3 million prior to a one-time charge resulting from the sale of the 4701 North Meridian Avenue hospital campus. Mount Sinai’s Net Revenues were $539.4 million in 2011, up from $521.3 million in the prior year, and Mount Sinai’s Days Cash on Hand grew from 137 to 147 days. The Mount Sinai Heart Institute, a partnership with New York’s Columbia University, continued to produce strong cardiac surgical volume, showing an increase of 2 percent. In addition, diagnostic cardiac catheterization procedures increased by 6.5 percent. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) data shows that Mount Sinai continues to be the area’s leader in cardiovascular care. Mount Sinai has the best surgical outcomes in Florida among facilities that perform the highest volume of complex cases. In addition, Mount Sinai’s cardiac surgeons perform the most heart valve surgeries in the state. Mount Sinai’s emergency room visits increased by 3 percent, as compared to 2010, driven by the freestanding emergency room in Aventura which showed a 4.4 percent increase in visits over the prior year. Additionally, Mount Sinai’s satellite facilities in Hialeah, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne experienced continued outpatient growth. Philanthropy has always been an important part of Mount Sinai’s history and success, and the Foundation’s net assets grew to $92.1 million in 2011. In 2011, Mount Sinai was once again recognized by U.S.News & World Report among the best hospitals in America and the only high-performing heart hospital in Miami-Dade County.

The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center recently received the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award for the third consecutive time. The CoC created this award to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care. Only 23 out of more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the U.S. have received this award three times in a row, and Mount Sinai is the only Florida hospital on the list. Mount Sinai was also the first hospital in South Florida to receive accreditation in radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The ACR-ASTRO seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. Fewer than 10 percent of radiation oncology programs nation-wide are accredited. The medical center continues to be a leader in lifesaving research and remains committed to its teaching program, training 160 residents and fellows in 17 medical specialties. Consistent with its mission, Mount Sinai provided $42 million in charity care in 2011, compared to nearly $40 million in 2010. Mount Sinai remains dedicated to the health and wellbeing of the South Florida community, demonstrated by its ongoing efforts to make healthcare more accessible, while providing the latest treatment options as a worldclass healthcare provider. About Mount Sinai Medical Center Founded in 1949, Mount Sinai Medical Center is the largest independent, private, not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida. Mount Sinai's Centers of Excellence combine technology, research and academic, to provide innovative and comprehensive care in cardiology, neurology, oncology and orthopaedics. One of a select few statutory teaching hospitals in the state of Florida, Mount Sinai is the hospital of choice for those who seek the level of expertise and care that only a teaching hospital can offer. The medical center's commitment to quality has garnered prestigious recognition, including ongoing designation as one of America's Top Hospitals by U.S.News & World Report.

A national challenge for water Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, March 30-April 30, encourages residents to save water on behalf of their city and win more than $50,000 in prizes Residents in U.S. cities will compete throughout the month of April to see whose city is the most “water wise.” The mayors of those cities earn bragging rights from winning the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, a non-profit competition, March 30-April 30, to see which leaders can best inspire their residents to make a series of informative, easy-to-use online pledges aimed at drastically slashing water and energy use across the nation. In return residents can win a Toyota Prius Hybrid from national presenting partner Toyota, water saving fixtures, and hundreds of prizes. The program is in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. “The mayor’s challenge gives communities a way to come together for one very important reason — the future of our planet,” says famed marine life artist Wyland, whose foundation piloted the Mayor’s Challenge concept to South Florida and Southern California cities in 2009 and 2011. “We see mayors making gentleman’s bets over who will win college football games. Here’s a way for them to take on an even more important challenge in a friendly, competitive way. We want to challenge every state in America to save an additional billion gallons a year over their current usage.” Others behind the program, such as National Geographic Explorer in Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle, have called the program an important step toward raising broad environmental awareness about water issues. “The steps we take for our environment in the next ten years will affect the future of our planet for the next 10,000 years.” With the nation facing $1 trillion in water infrastructure improvements in the next 25 years, mayors nationwide are encouraged to challenge their residents to conserve water, save energy, and reduce pollution on behalf of their city at www.mywaterpledge.com. Organizations spearheading the effort include the US Environmental Protection Agency, EPA WaterSense, US WYLAND Forest Service, NOAA, WaterPik,

Cities will be divided into four regions (West, Midwest, South and Northeast) and categorized by population (5,000-30,000 residents, 30,001-100,000 residents, 100,000+ residents). Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge win. Participants in the winning cities will be eligible to win over $50,000 in prizes, including the Grand Prize of a Toyota Prius Hybrid, as well as custom-designed sprinkler systems from Rain Bird, Eco-Flow Showerheads from WaterPik, Sterling water-saving toilets, and hundreds of gift cards from Lowe’s. Residents will also discover resources in their area to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water and energy resource issues to cost-saving tips at home. QUOTABLE “Water conservation will be one of the most important issues of this century,” Wyland says. “Today everyone should adopt the motto that water is life. Every drop of water on this planet counts. I hope the people of Hawaii will join me and millions of others around the world who are encouraging everyone to use our water wisely. Because by conserving water, we save energy, money and, ultimately, our planet.” “We must protect our water planet,” says National Geographic Explorer-In-Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle. Without blue there is no green. What we do in the next ten years will determine the future of our planet for the next 10,000.”

Rain Bird, Lowe’s, STERLING Plumbing, PADI and Project AWARE. The cities of Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Redondo Beach were among the first to accept the challenge. Other mayors are following suit by issuing council resolutions, creating steering committees, and using the city’s “highest” seat to urge their residents to save water, energy, and reduce pollution.
