Hundreds of business and community leaders were welcomed by AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman and Sunny Isles Beach city officials including Mayor Norman S. Edelcup.

Gil Dezer, a partner in the Trump/Sunny Isles Beach success story, also greeted guests noting, “We’ve seen so much development in Sunny Isles Beach so quickly because of the City Commission’s ‘can-do’ forward-thinking attitude.” Dezer also encouraged everyone to see the magnificent results of the resort’s “mas-

sive” room renovation project reflecting the goal to “continue to reinvest in Trump properties and Sunny Isles Beach.”

Mayor Edelcup added, “Trump Towers are shining examples of how we’ve been able to reinvest in Sunny Isles Beach.

Since incorporating in 1997, the city’s demographics have totally changed. This is now a young, vibrant community with a new school I’m honored to have named after me. The pulse of the city has also certainly picked up as a result of our City Commission’s work to encourage progressive developments.”

The Danger in Going Backstage

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING When you go backstage after a performance you risk having the illusions of the show shattered. Some people do better with this than others. It depends on your personality and on your deepest needs. An illusion is a misconception about the true state of affairs or the true value or content of something. It always involves some deception. An illusion has a character or appearance that doesn’t really exist.

Many of the truths that you tell yourself have the character of an illusion. They are a faulty perception of reality and the true nature of things. They can be a chimera; a fantastic or monstrous product of your imagination. They can also be coping mechanisms. However, at some point in your life they should be reexamined and scrutinized. The reason you created the illusion may no longer exist or no longer be necessary. If left alone, these misleading beliefs can become burdens.

In therapy you go backstage in a sense.

Therapy can help you strip away illusions, delusions and fantasies that you tell yourself which are often imaginary and many times misguided. The ostensible reasons for your beliefs and your behavior appear only on the surface and are not necessarily the real reasons. These apparent reasons do not hold up to examination of the relevant facts or circumstances. They may seem one way but they are not. They not real or true. Taken to the extreme, a delusion in a psychological context is a symptom or form of a mental disorder. If you do not understand yourself or your motives you cannot fulfill yourself. You become a victim of your own misunderstandings.

There are fantasies and fanciful ideas and perceptions that are actually beneficial to have. You can create good illusions; the illusions of happiness, abundance, health success, and peace.

Eventually, they will transform you and become your new reality and manifest in your life. Draw back the curtain. Don’t be afraid to go backstage.

“The budget maintains funding for public safety and vital programs for seniors and children. I made sure the Mayor’s office budget has been slashed by 20 percent; the Mayor’s salary has been cut by more than half; and I’ve also done away with unnecessary car allowances.

“I’m fully committed to getting county government back on track. I recently announced my proposal to reorganize to serve you more efficiently and effectively. I envision our organization as more responsive and easier to navigate. We want to eliminate stumbling blocks and promote a market for new job creation.

“I have plenty of work to do in the year ahead. Restoring trust in Miami-Dade government can’t be done simply by words – we’re going to do it by deeds proving‘ they do what they say they’re going to do.’”

What you should know about sodium

Michelle Ishakov NUTRITION & YOU Ever wondered how sodium affects your diet and how potassium can help?

Everything you buy that is not fresh at the supermarket is loaded with sodium and ingredients that are unhealthy for you.

Most Americans eat packaged and processed foods which contain a lot of salt (sodium). High sodium intake is linked to high blood pressure. Consuming less salt is a good way to reduce the risk of high blood pressure and decrease risk of heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and kidney damage.

In addition to eating less processed foods and more organic foods, eating foods that are rich in potassium will help prevent high blood pressure. A diet rich in potassium helps to counterbalance some of the harmful effects of sodium on blood pressure.

To stay away from foods with sodium can be a challenge, which is why it’s important to balance out your meals with potassium. It is easy for people to buy packaged foods as not everyone has time to prepare meals or money to spend on organic foods. If this is the case, you must balance your diet with an equal amount of potassium.

Potassium is a mineral that works with sodium to maintain the body’s water balance. It is essential for good nutrition and health. It is required for keeping heart,

brain, kidney, muscle tissues and other important organs of the body in good condition. It also helps with anxiety and stress among many other things! High amounts of potassium are found in fruits and vegetables such as potatoes, plums, prunes, raisins, bananas, tomatoes, artichokes, lima beans, spinach, nuts and seeds, avocado, and garlic. Other foods with substantial amounts include fish, meat, poultry, whole grains, and yogurt. Eat a variety to get the recommended amount. While sodium is added to most processed foods, potassium isn’t always. If it is, it is usually a low amount in relative to sodium. Meeting the minimum requirement isn’t a challenge if you eat a variety of foods like the ones listed above or by taking it as a supplement.

Here are some simple guidelines to follow. You should not consume more than 2,300-3,000 milligrams of sodium daily.

You should not consume more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium daily if you have health problems such as the ones I mentioned earlier. Monitor the sodium and potassium content on the Nutrition Facts label. Use the Daily Value to help limit your intake. 5% your daily value or less is low and over 20% is high. When preparing meals, use herbs and spices as alternatives to flavor your food, avoiding adding salt. If you try this for a while, you won’t miss the taste of salt as it will decrease. Salt is addicting, so the more you consume, the more you will feel the “need” to add more.

Staged automobile accidents taking their toll on all of us Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Staged automobile accidents are taking their toll on all of us. In fact, they are hitting us in the wallet in the form of bigger and bigger car insurance bills.

That’s why local and state fraud investigators recently opened some of their criminal files to give us an inside view of how phony accident scams work and why our auto insurance scams now are among the worst in the country.

The most popular scam is called a “Jump In.” According to fraud investigators, the members of these auto-scam groups intentionally crash cars and allow the so-called “victims” — who were not even inside the cars — to jump into the vehicles after the staged accident. That way, they can file phony injury reports with the help of cooperative doctors and lawyers.

It’s a big business that is getting bigger

by the day, especially around South Florida, according to Special Agent Tony Fernandez of the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

So how big are the losses?

“You’re talking billions,” Fernandez maintains.

And according to insurance fraud specialists, South Florida is poised to take the top spot for staged accidents away from the former leader in auto scams, Tampa-St. Petersburg.

With car insurance fraud South Florida’s latest growth industry, the money can come only from one place — bigger insurance bills for local policyholders.

State CFO Jeff Atwater says, “We’re the No. 1 state in the country and that’s why our residents have such high auto insurance bills, because of the level of fraud that exists here.”

While staged accidents may be making money, police and prosecutors say they are having a tougher time keeping up with it all.

So what is the problem?

NICB’s Fernandez explains, “The money right now is nil for training, investigations

and prosecutions. Police just can’t keep up with it all.”

Reforming Florida’s personal injury insurance laws now is expected to be one of the main focuses of state lawmakers when they meet again in January. In the meantime, fraud investigators say local autoinsurance fraud rings are getting better organized as they become even better fund-

ed than several years ago.

For local drivers, that could mean no real end in sight to those higher insurance bills in the future. And that certainly doesn’t bode well for our wallets.

‘Cups: A Play by Joni Seram’ Coming to Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Oct.12-22 Special show hosted by Hadassah, Oct. 18

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month – an apropos time for the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center to present “Cups: A Play by Joni Sheram” from Oct. 12-22 – a comedy tracing the milestones in a woman’s life through the bras she has worn. The Greater Miami Region Mitzvah Chapter of Hadassah will be hosting the Oct. 18 show at 8 p.m. when gently worn bras will be collected to donate to women in need, We felt ‘Cups’ would be a great show to bring the women in Aventura together and to create awareness for Hadassah and other women’s organizations in our area,” said Nancy Doyle, Mitzvah Chapter Vice President, who also serves as group sales director for Broadway Across America. The Mitzvah Chapter of Hadassah also just recently cohosted the second annual “Fit for Pink” event with Olympia Gym that helped raise thousands to support breast cancer research.

‘Bra-vo’ Rave Reviews Tickets are selling fast for “Cups” a wonderful tale by the late playwright Joni Sheram, who succumbed to cancer last year. The entertaining play chronicles a woman’s life as she reminisces about growing up and how her memories have been shaped by the contours and curves of a first training bra, a strapless, a bra burned in the 60’s, nursing bras and more – each mirroring changes in society. Audiences and critics agree: “You’ll laugh and cry and leave smiling…Cups is ‘uplifting, hilarious, poignant!’”

Denver Post reviewer wrote, “Sheram’s script captures many of the remarkable, kaleidoscopic events witnessed by the past three or four generations of women. While this may seem like a ‘girls only’ show, it isn’t. The depth of Sheram’s writing transcends gender.”

Sheram herself once said, “One of the remarkable things about ‘Cups’ is its

fourth act…this play really strikes a chord, reminding men and women of stories that are incredibly funny, and sometimes completely heartbreaking.”

Sheram, who wrote for the stage, TV and film, also worked as a grant-writer and was an advocate for the performing arts.

“The arts in America are threatened, and I know how important the theater is to maintaining a cultural identity,” she once said.

Sheram would most certainly have applauded the debut of the new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center – now kicking off its second season. UM announces schedule for Stamps Family lecture series

The University of Miami Frost School of Music presents jazz saxophonist Benny Golson, composer Ellen Taafe Zwilich, singer-songwriter Craig Carothers and violinist Joseph Silverstein as part of the 201112 Stamps Family Distinguished Visitors Series.

Remaining lectures are Oct. 6, Feb. 7, Mar. 2 and Mar. 20. All lectures will be presented at Clarke Recital Hall at the Weeks Center for Recording and Performance, 5501 San Amaro Dr. in Coral Gables.

The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors Series was established in 2003 through the extraordinary vision and generous commitment of Roe and Penny Stamps. The annual series brings an array of significant artists, scholars and music industry leaders to the Frost School of Music for the educational and artistic enrichment of its students, as well as the community.

Benny Golson is a multitalented saxophonist, and composer. His Stamps Distinguished Lecture will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m.

Golson began his career as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie band and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. With more than 30 albums to his credit, some of Golson’s most popular compositions include Blues March, I Remember Clifford, Killer Joe, and Stablemates.

His music also was featured on television shows such as M*A*S*H, Mission Impossible, and The Cosby Show. Golson is an NEA Jazz Master and a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.

Craig Carothers is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter originally

from Portland, OR. His Stamps Distinguished lecture will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at 2 p.m.

Corothers’ songs have been recorded by such artists as Kathy Mattea, Lorrie Markowitz, Andrea Zonn, and Steve Seskin. Carothers also wrote several songs for the 2005 movie The Californians.

Composer Ellen Taafee Zwilich will lecture on Friday, Mar. 2, at 8 p.m. Zwilich is a Pulitzer Prize-winning and multiGrammy- nominated composer.

Her music is widely performed and recorded by leading orchestras and chamber ensembles. She received her BA and MA degrees from Florida State University and a doctorate from the Julliard School of Music. Her distinct music is known for its technical substance and appeal to mixed audiences.

Joseph Silverstein, concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1962 to 1984, will lecture as a Stamps Distinguished Visitor on Tuesday, Mar. 20, at 3:30 p.m.

A renowned violinist and conductor, Silverstein served as assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1971 and music director from 1983 to 1998 of the Utah Symphony, which named him conductor laureate in the 1998-1999 season. He also served as principal guest conductor of Seattle’s Northwest Chamber Orchestra and has been artistic advisor for several orchestras including Hartford, Kansas City, Baltimore, Toledo, Winnipeg, Oakland, and Louisville.

Through his talented musical works, Silverstein is the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and has been on the faculties of schools like Boston University, Yale University, and the Tanglewood Music Center.

Bob Marley’s daughter writing picture books

When you listen to a Bob Marley song, you hear his zest for life and his joy in the world around him. So it is not surprising that One Love, the picture book written by his daughter Cedella Marley teems with that unbridled optimism and zest.

The picture book is beautifully illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, who worked closely with Marley on the concept. The book is based on the song, One Love.

“The message of One Love is just universal,” Marley said. “It’s one of dad’s songs that almost everyone knows, young and old. I call it my happy feel better song. It’s a song I can do almost anything to.”

She chose to write the first book using that song because she thought the message was important. The main character is Puncy, which was Cedella’s nickname as a child.

Puncy is accompanied by her chocolate lab, in honor of Bobby, Cedella’s dog, which died earlier this year. The story is about how Puncy brings her friends and family together to transform a neighborhood.

Throughout the book there are symbols of the Marley family. Like Puncy’s apartment is 56, which was the number of their home in Jamaica. In one illustration, the dad is holding his Bob Marley coffee cup. In another scene, the tablecloth is covered with lyrics.

Marley worked closely with the illustrator on the book, which is unusual since most of the time the author doesn’t see the illustrations until the book is almost done. But this

time the publisher, Chronicle Books, had the author and illustrator work collaboratively.

To Marley, working collaboratively is important.

“That’s the Marley way,” she said. “We do talk to each other a lot. I think you see that when you see the final product.”

Marley said that when she received the first book, she cried.

“We have these little Puncy dolls that go with the book,” she said. “Her friends are cute, too. I’m in love with the Puncy doll.”

Her mother was with her in Miami when she started the picture book and when her mom went home, Marley would call to read her the manuscript.

“For her and for us, this is a way to teach the new generation and the generations to come about Dad, using his lyrics but still making it relevant to the children,” Marley said. “She’s proud of me, her little Puncy.”

Marley was in her early teens when her father died.

“I don’t even remember being a teenager. One day they are on tour and the next day you are in a hospital,” she said.

“Your world is turned upside down. Thank God we had a good foundation. We are good people. That was the lesson.

You don’t have to be fancy. You have to be good people.”

being shipped to bookstores. The next book in the series will be based on the song Three Little Birds.

“Three Little Birds is a song that makes you feel positive about tomorrow and the next hour,” Marley said.

Marley is scheduled to speak at the Miami Book Fair International, Nov. 13-20. She also is going to the National Book Festival in Washington, DC.
