Around Town in Aventura Cliff Schulman takes a ride on USS ANNAPOLIS submarine Wishful thinking... “Dive...dive...dive! 20 degree down bubble... they’ve spotted us!” said “Commander” Cliff Schulman to his crew of a Los Angeles Class nuclear fast- attack submarine . “Set up for fast torpedo shot....we’ve got to get them before they get us,” Schulman ordered. “Fire One... we got him!” the Captain beamed. “Good job, men.” And so it was, almost, on May 1st when Aventura Marketing Council Chairman Cliff Schulman spent the day cruising with the Captain and crew of the USS ANNAPOLIS, courtesy of special arrangements made by the AMC’s strategic partner, Peter Caspari, for Broward Navy Days. Cliff and 12 other VIPs were privileged to spend an entire day cruising 20 miles off Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades prior to the departure of USS ANNAPOLIS as Fleet Week wrapped up. From the surface to 650 feet underwater, Cliff and his shipmates were treated to a full tour of a working submarine and met many of the 130 crewmen, breakfasted and lunched with Commander John Gearhart and his crew of highly- trained naval “submariners.” But
About to embark on a great adventure, guests descend to submarine hull ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
the tour was just the beginning. Guests were able to experience a day in the life of a nuclear submarine. The VIPs stood next to real torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles and were treated to having the crew “shoot” a torpedo (not in the tube) in order
to hear what it sounds like to fire the torpedo. Then, up to the control room to engage in maneuvers showing deep dives from 150 feet to 650 feet in seconds and evasive high speed turns of the sub to avoid an enemy. But wait...there’s more: a computergenerated attack with the crew responding and sinking the enemy ship with a simulated torpedo. After the day at sea, the sub surfaced and each of the VIPs visited the bridge of the sub to watch the entry back into Port Everglades to quickly dock and unload the visitors. Then the sub left for a scheduled underwater training mission, and later this year, for a mission to the European Command Area. And what did the guests take away from the tour and their day of “fun”? While the technology of the sub is impressive, both the Commander and his Executive Officer, Lt. Commander Melvin Smith, Jr., summed it up: “It’s not the technology and metal of the sub...it is the men and their teamwork who are the most important ....they make it all work, for without them the technology and equipment are worthless.”
Aventura Marketing Council members tour submarine for Broward Navy Days While Aventura Marketing Council Chairman Cliff Schulman had the once-in-alifetime opportunity to ride with a submarine crew, other AMC members enjoyed a tour of the USS ANNAPOLIS given by Navy personnel Joshua Sweeden and William Wade. Tour members included Eric Beck and Steve Goitia, IT Doctors; David Bloom and Michael Stern, Stern Bloom Media; Michelle Desjardins, Allstate Insurance; Peter L. Fishel, CPA; Jan Solomon, Florida Int. University Biscayne Bay Campus; Terry Lindsay, Prestige Cruise Holdings; Gary Pyott, The Continental Group; Howard Zalkin; Michael Shear, Wells Fargo Advisors; Charlene Welker, Mount Sinai Medical Center and Elaine Adler, Aventura Marketing Council. Members were amazed to see the extremely compact work and living quarters for officers and crew alike. The tour reinforced the group’s pride in the US Navy and the dedication of the men and women who serve to protect our nation.

Cliff extended his thanks to Peter Caspari, Broward Navy Days and the great team on the USS ANNAPOLIS, for allowing him, and vicariously, the Aventura Marketing Council, to scratch this off his bucket list. And in Cliff’s own words: “The day was AWESOME”!

Ivan Levy Hara on ‘A Great Adventure’ as BBYO president Ivan Levy Hara, the 16-year old son of Jaqui and Fernando Levy Hara of The mckakfa Group, is learning what it takes to become a leader of his peers. Seven months ago, BBYO Regional Directors Ben Racman and Alex Bolotovsky came to Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center to speak about BBYO, an organization Ivan knew nothing about. Within the week, meetings were set up to introduce Ivan to the BBYO programs and goals: to provide teen leadership, ownership and empowerment to Jewish teens, and to guarantee that the next generation of Jews in the Diaspora will thrive. Sitting around the conference table and first learning of the challenge presented to him, Ivan thought, “What did I get myself into?” But he soon realized what a ‘great adventure’ he was on with his friends. The group has formed The Chavayah Chapter of BBYO, set up the Board, planned and run two events and are well on their way to becoming an official BBYO chapter.

Mona Liza Smiles offers computerized, one-stop dental restorations BY LYNN CARROLL
If you’re wishing your teeth looked better but nervous about committing to months of time-consuming appointments and enduring messy, uncomfortable procedures for porcelain crowns, veneers, inlays or onlays, make an appointment with Dr. Liza Feliciano-Hall at Mona Liza Smiles. “We’re one of very few practices in the country using a new computer-assisted technology called CEREC that lets us do restorations in a single office visit,” she says. “No more impressions, no more temporaries that might fall out at that party, no more waiting for crowns to come back from the lab. We can do the entire process chair-side in about an hour and a half – and the patient is a part of the process every step of the way.” CEREC is just one example of Dr. Feliciano-Hall’s commitment to making every visit to the dentist a positive experience. “I’m a firm believer that, with new products and new technologies, dentistry can be truly pain-free and comfortable,” she says. Be Your Own Best Mother
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING There is a story about Motherhood that is very touching. “After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno’s damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother
had remained steadfast because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would live. This little story captures the essence of Motherhood in all its glory. It is a story that illustrates the ideal qualities we believe mothers should possess. It may arouse feelings of gratitude to your own mother or it may make you feel sad and resentful that you did not have such a mother. If you did not have a mother or if you did not have an ideal mother then you can be your own mother. You can learn to love and cherish yourself. It is very important to realize that you are loveable even if no one loved you or loves you. Make this belief a part of your being. Think about what you would want your mother to say to you. Talk to her and share your feelings. Tell her of your accomplishments, dreams and desires. Think about how much she would appreciate you and how proud she would be. Be nice to the child in you. Nurture yourself with love every day. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Dr. David Muransky, Aventura Chiropractic Director wishes everyone knew importance of care BY LYNN CARROLL
In practice for more than 32 years, Dr. David Muransky, director of the Aventura Chiropractic Care Center says he has heard the same question asked repeatedly by people of all ages: “How did this happen to me?” “Everyone should see a chiropractor early in life,” he says. “Pain isn’t an indicator. You don’t have to have a toothache to need a dentist. Some conditions cause no pain, but should be fixed before the problem worsens.” He says people are subject to spinal misalignments the day they’re born. “The simple birth process,” Dr. Muransky says, “creates misalignments, especially of the cervical spine.” He says such misalignments are called subluxations. “Later, we fall as we learn to walk, fall off our bicycles or tumble playing sports. We talk with cellular phones balanced between shoulder and ears. We sleep on our stomachs. We sit working at desks for long periods.” All this, the doctor says, can aggravate even minor
misalignments. “One leg is sometimes shorter than the other,” he says. “This causes an unlevel pelvis and sacral base, which is the platform for the spinal column. If spines aren’t balanced, there’s uneven wear on disks that cushion vertebrae.” He says a recent Miami Herald article absolutely supports what chiropractors do and he’d be happy to provide a reprint. “In summary,” Dr. Muransky says, “everyone should see a chiropractor early in life to allow as much correction to the spine as possible. Saving the disks, which are the cushions and spaces between vertebrae, is what chiropractors do so the nerves function better. Remember, it’s the nervous system that controls our entire well-being.” Now it’s the doctor’s turn to ask a question: Rather than wait until all else fails, why not see a chiropractor first? Attorneys Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Thomas Jefferson was insanely jealous of the successful oratorical skills in court by his fellow Virginia attorney Patrick Henry. Jefferson had spent years preparing for the practice of law under Virginia’s outstanding attorney George Wythe, whereas Henry became a lawyer without any legal training or preparation. It is questionable if Henry ever read a legal book before becoming a lawyer. Henry mesmerized juries and won almost every case he tried, whereas Jefferson, a brilliant legal scholar with a notoriously poor speaking voice, “In not one of his major cases had he succeeded.” In 1773, Jefferson was preparing notes on the subject of divorce. He sat in court observing Henry try a matrimonial case for Kitty Eustice Blair who sued the Blair family for her sizable dower right to Blair’s slaves, after his death. “The evidence,” Jefferson wrote as to Henry’s legal presentation, “was voluminous
and indecent.” Kitty, however, won her case and her mother heaped praise in correspondence on Henry, her lawyer; “He shined in the cause of Justice backed by the law.”Jefferson was left sputtering by Henry’s performance and results. “If Jefferson ever ranted, it was on the subject of Henry.” While their political views conformed exactly (Jefferson’s later Declaration of Independence and Henry’s ‘Give me liberty or give me death’), Jefferson said that Henry could not draw up a bill or a brief “on the most simple subject which could bear legal criticism…for indeed there was no accuracy of idea in his head.” Jefferson’s criticism of Henry was also “an indication of his growing disillusion with the practice of law.” As a financial crisis in the colonies continued, few clients were paying him. As he turned away from trials and concentrated on preparing briefs and pleadings, his earnings dropped nearly 50% in 1773, his last full year of practicing law. Collections rarely exceeded 50% of his legal bills. Finally, in 1774, at age 31, he abandoned his law practice and sacrificed two thirds of the moneys owed by clients. Jefferson’s jealousy of Henry later turned to bitter hatred, which remained with him for the rest of his life.

Parksman Parking hosts Channel 7 Meteorologist Vivian Gonzalez at Christine Lee’s Continued from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––– Launerts explained Marksman Security Corporation, one of South Florida’s premier residential and commercial security companies serving over 160 luxury residential and commercial properties, has launched a cutting-edge sister company - Parksman Parking, LLC. Parksman combines 24-hour security supervision with 24-hour valet and parking management. Following the recent acquisition of a local valet company, Parksman has commenced operations, expertly fulfilling the need for high quality valet parking services and parking management to luxury condominiums, hotels and commercial venues. Parksman’s premier list of South Florida clients includes Sole on the Ocean Hotel and Resort, Ocean Four Condominium and King David Condominium in Sunny Isles Beach. While Parksman helps ensure the safety of clients and their vehicles, Channel 7 meteorologist Vivian Gonzalez is dedicated to keeping South Floridians apprised of weather conditions that become especially essential to monitor during hurricane season, starting June 1. Her forecasts air on Channel 7 every Saturday morning between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. A Miami native, Gonzalez joined 7News in 2005 as a weather producer in the midst of the most active hurricane season on record. Thirty-one systems were spawned that year with Wilma and Katrina impacting South Florida directly. She was promoted to weather anchor in 2007 for “Today In Florida” Saturday Edition and remains committed to keeping viewers aware of South Florida’s fast changing weather patterns. . According to WSVN, weather forecasters at Colorado State University are predicting an above-average 2011 hurricane season with 16 named storms in the Atlantic, nine of which are expected to turn into hurricanes - five of them major. “The best part of my job is providing viewers with information needed to get through their day,” Gonzalez said. “Having the advantage of thoroughly knowing the computer systems makes my job easier. Aside from analyzing and interpreting the weather data at hand, I’m able to build my weather models and shows around the story for the day. “It’s my obligation to the community to provide the most accurate information, including the visuals to support such important data…When we have a severe thunderstorm warning issued, we have to set up the radar, get a graphic together showing the area under advisory and then run out to the studio to break into programming. It’s a matter of seconds that seem like an eternity. The real challenge comes in translating the information out to the public. It’s my responsibility to keep viewers safe.” AMC members planned on learning more about hurricane preparedness by visiting the Channel 7 news website wsvn.com. Business leaders as well as condo/HOA members and property managers were also invited to attend a complimentary seminar prior to the luncheon presented by the AMC and Luxury Condominium Alliance. Topics included how to turn building waste into energy efficiency; save substantially on lighting and water bills; and how to collect delinquent assessments without legal fees.

It is situated on a Peninsula in the city of North Miami Beach near Oleta State Park, 12 miles north of Miami just south of our great city of Aventura. An alluring community for avid boaters, as most of the homes are waterfront, have docks, and ocean access. I recently sold a home on 350 feet of wide water frontage to baseball great Miguel Cabrera. He used to play for the Florida Marlins and is now a Major League first baseman for the Detroit Tigers. He immediately tore down the existing house and is completing his brand new mansion. I believe I have listed one of the least expensive listings on the water at $799,000 with 32 ft of water frontage and I have another with 100 ft of waterfrontage for $1,450,000 and a brand new exquisitely designed and decorated one for $1,999,000. The prices
range to the high $3 millions. Eastern Shores is a guard gated community manned by a North Miami Beach police officer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Avoiding the Agony of the Feet BY JARETT REINHARTZ, C.PED When most people think about miniaturized miracles, they’re probably referring to mini-computers or MP3 players. As a pedorthic specialist, I relate that term to the human foot – a mechanism as beautifully engineered as anything man-made or divine. Imagine, each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 38 muscles, 56 ligaments, tendons and a complex network of nerves and blood vessels. All is that packaged into each of the two extremities that provides standing balance to the rest of the body. According to one study, the average pair of feet takes between 8,000 and 10,000 steps per day, traveling up to 80,000 miles over the course of the average lifetime. Feet absorb 1.5 times of one’s weight when walking and much more when one exercises. Given this amount of pounding, it is not surprising that most Americans will visit their physicians at one point or another to deal with distressed feet. Some of their foot problems are hereditary and treatable, and others are brought on by specific conditions that can be corrected. Modern medicine can detect and treat
the causes of most foot problems, ranging from blisters to muscle and ligament injuries. Causes can be as simple as the wrong pair of shoes for a particular pair of feet, or they can be more complex, such as overuse, misuse or circulatory complications. Whatever the circumstance, you are well advised to seek medical treatment at the first signs of unusual foot discomfort because a longer-term problem that begins in the feet can rapidly impact the ankles, knees and other parts of the legs. Musculoskeletal, circulatory or other serious conditions can be symptoms of much broader health issues. By treating foot pain or distress early, you can avoid more complicated conditions that can lead to even greater discomfort and preclude the need for more extensive treatment in the future.
Jarett Reinhartz, C.Ped., is owner and managing partner of Advanced Footcare, Inc. of Aventura. He is a state licensed Pedorthist, and a member of the Pedorthic Footwear Association and is certified by the American Board of Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics. Advanced Footcare’s patients have included hundreds of professional and amateur athletes, including players in the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and college teams. • EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY I am very upset. My husband passed away two weeks before the FCAT test was given. My nine-year-old twins were not mentally prepared to take this test. Is it true that a student’s annual performance in Florida is judged by one single test on one single day? Unfortunately, yes. The FCAT test defines whether students pass from third to fourth grade and ultimately whether they graduate from high school with either a standard or special diploma — or whether they will eventually have to take the GED. It’s a shame, but this factor can determine their income range for the rest of their lives. There are too many eggs placed in one basket. I know that I am preaching to the choir, but a student’s value is much more than a test score. We need to have creative, innovative and empathic students. They need to be taught that the third-grade test will not determine their future. My daughter has a ring in her nose. What is the best way to remove it? To the best of my knowledge, these permanent rings need to be removed by a qualified surgeon. My sixth grader came home and told an awful story. He said his friend loaded a needle with saline and injected the solution into his forehead; he then moved his forehead skin around so that it looked like a bug. Everybody laughed and thought this display was pretty cool. My son heard about this incident from his older brother. Have you heard about this before? Unfortunately, yes. I urge you to tell your children that they can lose their eyesight and even incur brain damage from practicing this activity. Have you heard of AXE Body Spray? Yes. It is cologne popular with young children; the results are usually shown online. Kids light themselves or their clothes by igniting body spray. The videos and news reports indicate this dangerous activity is being practiced worldwide. Apparently, hundreds of videos show kids setting themselves on fire and — you have guessed it — each video prompts more and
more kids to try this horrific way of getting high. On April 11, 2010, Gregory Boyce of the New Orleans Progressive Examiner said, “The prank is so popular that social networking websites like Facebook have social groups dedicated to it.” A quick search on video sharing websites will attest to this. YouTube turns up numerous videos of teenagers using aerosol cans to create fire. In one video, a faceless teenager demonstrates how to make mini-balls of flame in a carnival manner in order to perform “cool” stunts. The video soundtrack has an appealing soft rock/soft rap, reggae sound that, to the mature listener, has the same effect as the Pied Piper of Hamlin leading his town’s youth to their death. However, to the teen listener, the sound is rhythmic and “trans-like.” This is serious stuff.
Can you please provide a hotline number, so that someone who is contemplating suicide can call? 1-800-SUICIDE; National Suicide Prevention Helpline, 1-800-273-TALK; The National Adolescent Suicide Hotline, 1-800-621-4000. I checked my son’s email and found some words I didn’t understand. Can you please help me? The words are trail mix, online recipe, online pharmacies and pharming. Trail mix means bowls at a party filled with everyone’s random pills from a medicine cabinet or baggies — given as favors at parties — that have random pills. Online recipe simply means kids are sharing recipes for drug cocktails online. The third term, online pharmacies, refers to many online pharmacies that sell drugs without a doctor’s prescription; all it takes is a credit card and a computer to get a prescription filled. Kids and teens can easily order nonprescribed medicines from an online drug seller. The fourth term, pharming, means getting all the medicine from the homes of one’s parents, relatives or neighbors. This term is repeatedly used in Internet chat dialogues. Many kids take these pills with alcohol in order to get high. Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. Carnival Breeze to be based in Miami beginning in 2012 BY ANDRIA MUNIZ AND JENNIFER DE LA CRUZ
Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines and the Port of Miami have announced that the line’s newest ship, the 130,000-ton Carnival Breeze, will launch year-round six- and eight-day Caribbean cruises from Miami beginning in November 2012. The 3,690-passenger Carnival Breeze will be the sixth Carnival Cruise Lines ship homeported in Miami. Collectively, these vessels are expected to carry roughly 1 million guests annually — the most of any Carnival homeport. “The Port of Miami is a long-standing and valued partner and we’re pleased to build upon that relationship by basing the Carnival Breeze in Miami year-round,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO. “Our company has been based in Miami since it was founded nearly 40 years ago and we can’t wait to welcome this exciting and innovative new ship to our hometown.” “The cruise industry supports thousands of jobs in our community. This newest addition to our port’s fleet builds upon our longstanding partnership with Carnival,” said MiamiDade County Commission chair Joe Martinez. “Miami-Dade County looks forward to welcoming the Breeze to the Port of Miami.” Port director Bill Johnson noted that Carnival

is the Port of Miami’s largest cruise line. “The Carnival Breeze adds to an already distinguished fleet that includes some of the most modern and exciting ships on the seas today,” Johnson said. As Carnival’s newest “Fun Ship,” Carnival Breeze will offer a host of exciting innovations, including expansive top-deck areas such as WaterWorks, an aqua park with exhilarating water slides and other attractions; SportSquare, an open-air recreation complex with a ropes course, mini-golf, and outdoor fitness area; The Lanai, a wraparound promenade with whirlpools extending over the ship’s sides, and a 270-square-
foot poolside LED screen displaying movies, and other programming. Carnival fans can learn about the Carnival Breeze’s many features and view its colorful new stateroom designs at <www.carnival.com/breeze>. As part of its innovative Miami-based cruise schedule, Carnival Breeze will offer a year-round three-port, six-day cruise program operating Sundays-Saturdays beginning Dec. 2, 2012. This schedule will be offered on alternating weeks and will feature visits to three popular ports of call: Grand Turk, BWI; Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and Nassau, The Bahamas Expanding upon its role as the leader in
Caribbean cruising, Carnival Breeze will offer two distinctly different four-port, eightday itineraries year-round from the Port of Miami operating Saturday-Sunday beginning Nov. 24, 2012. Each of the eight-day cruises from Miami will provide guests with ample opportunities to sample the best that the Caribbean has to offer, from sunning and relaxing on gorgeous beaches to shopping for duty-free bargains and savoring delectable island cuisine. The Saturday-to-Sunday rotation is particularly attractive as it maximizes consumers’ vacation time, with eight full days of cruising across two weekends. The schedule includes an eight-day southern Caribbean itinerary that will feature Grand Turk, La Romana (Dominican Republic), Curacao, and Aruba, along with an eight-day eastern Caribbean route visiting St. Thomas/St. John, Antigua, Tortola and Nassau. Combined with its six-day cruises, Carnival Breeze guests are offered unprecedented opportunities to visit a diversity of sunny, tropical Caribbean destinations, with nearly a dozen ports of call featured among the various itineraries. Prior to the launch of year-round Caribbean service from Miami, Carnival Breeze will debut with a summer schedule of 12-day Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona operating June 3 to Nov. 6, 2012.

2012 Bentley Continental GT is ‘deliciously decadent’ Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The new 2012 Bentley Continental GT is a deliciously decadent automobile. It is sensual in design, yet powerful and fast enough to handle any challenge on the highway. It is an amazing combination of style, speed and comfort. The original Continental GT coupe was introduced back in 2003 and re-established Bentley as a player in the ultra-luxury twodoor sport sedan market. The new version is an upgrade on the original, with numerous little improvements and subtle changes that all contribute to making a better automobile, but without seriously dating the older original. The changes are subtle and include a more upright grille and LED running lights trimming the main projector beams. Interestingly, Bentley says the primary body panels on the new Continental GT have been fabricated with a new technique that involves heating single sheets of alu-
minum to 950 degrees, then shaping them under high pressure to remove welds and seams, allowing designers to produce much tighter bends and curves. These advanced aluminum Super Forming production techniques allow for a more sculpted body and sharp power lines. The result is a new body with improved aerodynamics that delivers a smoother, quieter and more stable ride at higher speeds. Under the hood, the Continental GT is powered by Bentley’s six-liter, 12-cylinder, twin-turbocharged 567 bhp engine mated to a new Quickshift transmission capable of double downshifts. And, thanks to advanced FlexFuel technology, the engine also can run on both standard unleaded gasoline and sustainable bioethanol (up to E85) or any mix of the two. All this power delivers a 0-60 mph clocking in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph. Later this year, an all-new, high-output eight-cylinder engine will be available. It’s an advanced power engine and will deliver a 40 percent reduction in emissions, compared with the W12 engine. Both engines are mated to an all-wheel drive system with a sporty rear-torque bias to minimize understeer during hard cornering, allowing more experienced drivers to control the car’s line and balance with pre-

cise throttle manipulation. On the inside, the cabin is handcrafted, with a bold, sweeping dashboard and instrument panel finished in premium softtouch leather. The distinctive cobra-design seats give added comfort and rear cabin space has been “enhanced.” A new touchscreen 30GB infotainment system includes new advanced satellite navigation with dynamic route guidance, seven-digit postal code entry and Google Map compatibility. Audio systems have the latest wide frequency Balance Mode
Radiator speakers as standard equipment, with Revolutionary Dirac Dimensions DSP for exceptional sound reproduction from the Naim for Bentley premium audio system. It’s ‘never too late’ for fitness BY BARI AUERBACH
Too busy, too old, too tired, too out of shape to walk in a gym…There are all too many reasons why many people give up on trying to lead a more active lifestyle promoting greater health and longevity. But the philosophy “it’s never too late for fitness” is all too true and just about anyone can ”Just do it!” Never Too Late: Exercise plans that incorporate weight training and cardiovascular activities can help men and women of all ages get stronger and live longer. People who routinely exercise can reduce body fat, build muscle mass, strengthen bones, improve endurance for daily lifestyle activities and reduce their risk for heart disease. You Don’t Have to Get Too Muscular: Many women are hesitant to start weight training programs because they’re afraid of becoming too bulky - but according to The American College of Sports Medicine, women generally have too much estrogen in their bodies to build large muscles. The average woman who incorporates weight training into her fitness plan at least twice a week can gain almost two pounds of muscle and lose 3.5 pounds of fat within two months. Beyond boosting confidence, weight training can also boost a woman’s metabolic rate, making it possible to burn more calories throughout the day - even when resting. Too Tired for Cardio? Timing is everything when it comes to engaging in cardiovascular exercises that can actually make you feel more energized by helping to improve oxygen consumption by the body and making the heart and lungs stronger. An optimal time to do cardio is before you may be too tired from a long day at work - or after you’ve recharged with a nutritious meal or snack. The best kind of cardio to do depends on what won’t be so unappealing that you’ll avoid it completely. According to The National Osteoporosis Foundation, women can especially benefit from cardio exercises that help build bone density such as walk-
ing, jogging, stair climbing, elliptical or treadmill training, jumping rope, playing tennis, dancing and hiking. Not Too Old: Improved physical capabilities of today’s aging population have brought about the belief that exercise is the only real “fountain of youth” serving to shatter agerelated stereotypes that used to define a person‘s ability to engage in exercise. A study of healthy adults between the ages of 60 and 72 participating in a standard 12-week resistance program showed significant improvement in the strength of seniors can be achieved with weight training; and that improvements in muscular strength may be the best way to reduce or prevent the incidence of injury. Enhanced strength and endurance gained from weight training and cardiovascular exercises can also make daily lifestyle activities easier and less tiring. Not Too Good to be True: The International Osteoporosis Foundation emphasizes that people who exercise can build and maintain bone density, slow down the process that leads to osteoporosis and improve balance, strength and agility. The American Heart Association also highly recommends exercising for weight loss, increased longevity and reduced risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes and certain types of cancer. According to The Mayo Clinic, improved mental health is yet another benefit of exercise, as it helps ward off depression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

FWC REPORT Florida’s hunting future looks bright BY RODNEY BARRETO Chairman, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
Thanks to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and its many partners and cooperators, the future of hunting in Florida looks bright. The FWC continues to support and promote the hunting tradition by helping open up new public lands for hunting, expanding hunting opportunities on public and private lands, and introducing new folks to the hunting heritage. The Sunshine State is blessed with one of the nation’s largest wildlife management area (WMA) systems, encompassing more than 5.8 million acres of public hunting land. The FWC manages 1.1 million of these acres, and the FWC’s “partners for public hunting” contribute the remaining acreage. Because of these partnerships and the shared interest in continuing to grow Florida’s wildlife management area system, 32 new public hunting areas have been added since 2005, totaling more than 141,000 acres. The FWC listened when hunting stakeholders asked that the state’s deer population managed at a more local level. To increase hunter satisfaction, it adjusted season dates, moved a zone boundary line and added a new zone. The new zones and dates, which take effect with the 2010-11 season, correspond better with times of peak deer activity throughout the state. In 2006, the FWC created a crossbow season on private lands to give crossbow hunters more opportunities. This new season not only allowed crossbow hunters in the woods earlier, it gave vertical-bow hunters more hunting days by allowing the use of bows during the crossbow season and the use of both crossbows and bows during the muzzle-loading gun season on private property. These changes give hunters more opportunities and help recruit and retain more folks in the sport, because some youth and older hunters have more difficulty using a compound bow than they do a crossbow. This concept was popular enough that the
Commission recently passed rules to expand the crossbow season on private land. Starting with the 2011-12 hunting season, crossbow hunters will be able to get in the woods a month earlier on private lands and join the archery hunters in pursuing deer of either sex. In 2005, the FWC launched its Youth Hunting Program of Florida to provide quality hunting experiences for 12- to 17year-olds and increase the number of youths involved in hunting. The statewide program averages nearly 60 hunts and introduces about 600 youths and parents to the sport each year, giving many of them their first taste of hunting in a positive, safe, educational and mentored setting. Today’s youth spend half as much time outdoors as kids a decade ago did, so in 2009, the FWC launched the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network to help reverse this trend. Currently, there are five facilities in the network designed to strengthen the connections between youth and wildlife conservation through activities like hunting, archery, fishing, kayaking and wildlife viewing. New this spring on private land was the first-ever youth spring turkey hunt weekend – another opportunity the FWC established to help attract young hunters and encourage adults to take kids hunting. The two-day hunt occurs the weekend prior to the opening of spring turkey season in each hunting zone. Only those under 16 are allowed to harvest a turkey, and they have to be supervised by an adult, 18 years or older. And beginning next spring, 78 WMAs will include the youth turkey season with their hunting opportunities. I am extremely proud of this agency and what it has done for the hunting community. The FWC continues to form new partnerships and foster existing ones with the intent of opening up more public hunting lands, further expanding hunting opportunities and introducing new folks to our hunting heritage.

Tropical Audubon Society Earth Day Speech BY ELIZABETH KUEHNER SMITH
As part of this year’s Earth Day Celebrations, the Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) hosted an afternoon of activities on April 22nd including the unveiling of the restored Chickee Hut. The TAS Conservation Concert Series Chair and Advisory Board Member Elizabeth Kuehner Smith addressed the attendees in a poignant and moving speech dedicated to those who came before us and to those who will inherit our care of the earth. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • “Earth Day reminds us to preserve what remains of our Natural World and to rehabilitate and restore what we can rescue from our collective environmental misdeeds, which makes Earth Day an apt metaphor for the restoration of our beloved Chickee Hut. In a community effort that unified a diverse supporting cast — from rock ‘n’ roll doctors to an anonymous philanthropist — our Tropical Audubon chickee hut rose like a phoenix from the ashes only a few months ago. Its return to full flower began with my own personal journey of loss, the love and support of friends and the willingness of volunteers to see the project to fruition. The structure, built in 1983, had fallen into disrepair after the 2005 hurricane season in which three back-to-back storms destroyed its thatched roof. With renovation complete, a host of educational events are again unfolding in its welcome shade, as are Yoga classes led by yogi Suzen Gerrish. When I approached TAS executive director Laura Reynolds two springs ago to ask the board’s permission to hold a memorial service for my late mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Hanson Kuehner, on Mother’s Day, May 9, 2009, none of us could then imagine that the “Yes” answer Laura gave me would ultimately set the chickee’s repair into motion. My sisters and I wanted to remember our mother at TAS because it is a charming, down-toearth setting and a haven for the feathered creatures of which she was so fond. As many of you know, at dawn and dusk the property comes alive with chatter, chirping and song. Happily, we were invited to hold a late afternoon gathering in the Doc Thomas House where friends and family shared remembrances and then we went outside for a life-affirming bird walk. When we reached this site,
TAS executive Director Laura Reynolds briefly explained that Audubon lacked funding to repair what was then a very dilapidated, balding chickee hut. My friend Steve Chavoustie without hesitation piped up, “Let’s have concerts next winter to raise money.” Laura had long nurtured the same idea, seeing concerts “as a way to rebuild the chickee and reestablish our community connection.” Historically, TAS has focused on environmental education, a stance established by Laura’s mentor, Bob Kelley. She wanted to continue his legacy, and that first concert series helped us exceed our fundraising goal for “raising the chickee.” Charlie Galloway, a self-described “lifelong student of the ancient art of thatching,” directed the physical restoration of the 20’ by 30’ structure. He and his crew harvested fronds from native Sabal Palms in a southwest Florida hammock during a full moon. “Where[ever] people live under thatch roofs,” he explained, “the understanding is that the roofs last twice as long when the leaves are cut at that time” in the lunar cycle. Using only fronds from trees growing in shady hammocks was another Galloway tactic, because “The more dense and shady the forest, the more supple [and pliable] the leaf.” The artistic weaves you see above are an amalgam of native styles borrowed from native peoples from the Everglades to the South Pacific. An immeasurable amount of good has come out of the modest memorial we held at TAS for our mother. Indeed, “Betty’s Birdwalk” underscores the pebble-on-thepond ripple effect of life. From the depths of our sadness, acknowledging our mother’s passing and honoring her at TAS brought renewed life to a structure that is again serving as our anchor for outdoor activities, and, most important, as a place where young people are again gathering to learn about — and become enchanted by — birds. Members of Tropical Audubon can also now apply to hold special gatherings here, which helps enrich our coffers, in turn, enriching our crucial conservation efforts in our region.”

Samsara Imports… where beauty, fashion and culture meet
BY NANCY EAGLETON
Media, celebrities, local customers and international travelers – many are embracing the richness and diversity of India’s handcrafted products and colorful textiles offered by Samsara Imports. Located in the Miami International Merchandise Mart, the Miamibased designer, importer and distributor of clothing, jewelry and home decor from India is dedicated to bringing these unique products “to market” and has become the trendy, hot spot to shop. The stylish fashions of Samsara Imports were showcased recently on Univision’s “Nuestra Belleza Latina 2011.” During one of the show’s segments, Indian-inspired decor served as the backdrop for the 24 contestants who modeled and danced in elegant Indian saris, all provided by Samsara.
“People have come to know the beauty, quality and popularity of the home and fashion items from India.” -Lissette Atassi, Samsara Imports’ buyer and owner.
Samsara’s exotic fabrics, bed linens, pillows, lamps and lanterns, wall decor, tabletop items and accessories will also be featured on an upcoming episode of Extreme Makeover – Home Edition, which will air on ABC the first week in May. Samsara’s buyer and owner is Lissette Atassi, an entrepreneur with a vast knowledge of the Indian region, people and customs. She began the business in 2003 with her first store, Gifts and Beyond, located in Pinecrest. Her company has since moved and expanded to include two retail stores in the Merchandise Mart, a retail website and wholesale distribution to boutiques located in the U.S., European, Latin American and Caribbean markets. “People have come to know the beauty, quality and popularity of the home and fashion items from India,” said Atassi. “I’ve modeled Samsara after a department store – you can get beautiful, unique clothing, jewelry, gifts and items for your home, all in one shop.” At Samsara, shoppers will find intricately designed kurtis (tunics), saris and lehengas (skirts), scarves and bags. Fashions for the Lissette Atassi is the buyer and owner of Samsara Imports, located in the Miami International Merchandise Mart. home include styles that

are authentic, modern or contemporary, “each with a charm of its own,” according to Atassi. Atassi travels to India several times a year on buying trips to select the more than 2,000 products she offers. While there, she also visits Samsara’s regional branch in Delhi, which constantly monitors the quality of all of the items she imports. This month, Samsara will open two new
international locations, in Nicaragua and Ecuador. Atassi is planning further business expansion, offering franchise opportunities in the U.S. and abroad. “Our sales have tripled during the past year and we continue to grow and expand to meet the demand of our diverse clients,” said Atassi. “We’re able to handle this growth because of the high quality standards of our products, our large inventories, our great logistics and our dedicated support team.” Samsara Imports can also provide props, decor, furniture rentals and entertainment, including belly dancers, musicians and henna artists, for your Middle Eastern/Indian theme parties and events. “We can provide some items, or everything you need to create a magical, exotic ambiance for your special occasion,” said Atassi.
Samsara Imports is located at the Miami International Merchandise Mart, 755 NW 72 Avenue, first floor, #6 and #7, and the phone number is 305269-6992.
