Turnberry Isle Miami launches new era, highlights amenities
T
urnberry Isle Miami and the City of Aventura share a history that dates back to the 1970s. As it launches a new era, Turnberry Isle is rekindling the glamour and personal service it embodied when the resort and club was first established. Formerly Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort, the 300-acre property now is managed by Turnberry Hotel Group, a division of the South Florida-based Turnberry Group of Companies. The “new” Turnberry Isle is returning to its roots by re-emphasizing its unique character and magnificent Aventura setting to deliver experiences that reflect its world-class stature. “As an independent property, we are better able to adopt the original vision for Turnberry Isle by incorporating the personal touches and attention to detail that create rewarding experiences for our guests,” says new Managing Director Douglas Hustad. “But you really don’t have to be a member or guest to enjoy the luxurious pampering for which Turnberry Isle is renowned.” Hustad notes that The Spa & Fitness Center at Turnberry Isle and the resort’s signature restaurants are offering special savings to residents who would like a taste of Turnberry Isle’s legendary hospitality. The Spa & Fitness Center, rated Four-Star by Forbes, is keeping Miami Spa Month alive in September and October with the choice of a 60-minute Relaxation Massage or Customized Deep Cleansing Facial for only $99, plus gratuity. With 21 treatment rooms, The Spa features a variety of different experiences and is an oasis that offers something for everyone. If fine dining is on the agenda, nationally acclaimed Chef Michael Mina’s BOURBON STEAK and Turnberry Isle’s signature Cascata Grille win rave reviews from guests and food critics alike. Voted “Best Steak in America” by Esquire magazine, BOURBON STEAK is an innovative, contemporary American steakhouse featuring the finest meats and freshest seafood available. As part of “Miami Spice,” diners can enjoy an incredible dinner through September 30 for just $35, plus tax and gratuity. Affairs of the Brain
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Affairs are extremely complex just like human beings. They are the result of many underlying psychological circumstances. There are some common causes and situations that foster an affair. They are often triggered by the lack of emotional fulfillment within the existing relationship. This is coupled with disillusionment and resentment when the expectations of either partner are not being met. There is often a desire to experience yourself differently than you experience yourself in your primary relationship. You want to express yourself as a different person, with a different manner in a different role. You might want to feel the “high” that an affair creates. This “high” can be addictive. Studies have found that the feel good brain chemicals of Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Serotonin are intensified during an affair. It is suggested that it might be a form of self-medication for underlying depression. Some interesting statistics have also
been revealed. Highly educated people and those earning more than $30,000 a year are more likely to engage in extra-marital affairs. “46% of unfaithful wives and 62% of unfaithful husbands had affairs with someone at work. 29% of wives and 16 % of husbands were unfaithful with friends and neighbors.” 34% of women and 56% of the people surveyed reported that their marriage was “happy”. Affairs are emotional. They create feelings of intense passion and excitement for the participating partner. They feel exhilarated. For the injured partner they can create feelings of enormous pain, loss, anger and even rage. The injured party feels betrayed, threatened and abandoned. There is a decrease in self-esteem. It is not unusual for an affair to destroy or end the primary relationship. However, it is not unusual for a couple to choose to work through the situation and heal themselves and their relationship. Affairs present the greatest challenge to committed relationships and marriages. It is important to understand the meaning of the affair before you can begin to process the anger, find forgiveness and reestablish trust. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Aventura Commissioner Bob Diamond honored for Turning Back Time Forest Trace honors eight octogenarians as part of National Grandparents Day Celebration The idea began with Marlins Manager Jack McKeon. To some, his age gave rise to skepticism. At Forest Trace, a Lauderhill luxury senior community, the news was no surprise. After all, the community is comprised of active octogenarians who blog, travel and work. But it did inspire a celebration honoring eight remarkable octogenarians in an “Eight over 80: Turn Back Time” Awards Ceremony. “I love making a difference and am delighted that my work, as well as the work, of my fellow octogenarians, is being recognized,” explained Aventura City Commissioner Bob Diamond, who was the vision behind the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center. In addition to Commissioner Diamond, the honorees include Evelyna Cantwell, biochemist and inventor; Judy Drucker,
Honorees include (L to R) Burton Landy, Evelyna Cantwell, Peter Fuchs, Judy Drucker, Commissioner Bob Diamond, Conni Gordon, Edwin Pope and Dr. Ferdie Pacheco

Jack McKeon will receive the “Honorary Octogenerian Award. “What a positive message the Marlins sent by choosing an octogenarian to lead the team,” explained Stanley Rosenthal, owner’s representative of the community. “Our hope is to send a similar message by honoring eight individuals who have changed the stereotype of aging by their ongoing participation in today’s work force.”

Gen. Joseph McNarney and the Talmud
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Although the Nazis had murdered six million Jews and burned their books, schools and synagogues, the suffering of Europe’s displaced Jews did not end with the Allied victory in 1945. Hundreds of thousands of Jews, homeless and unwelcome in their native countries, lived under poor conditions in displaced persons camps (DP) operated by the Allies. A commission appointed by President Truman to investigate the situation, reported: “We appear to be treating the Jews as the Nazis treated them except that we do not exterminate them.” Truman ordered, “Get these people into decent housing until they can be repatriated.” The problem was that there was no place for the Jews to go as their homes had been confiscated and U.S. immigration policy was based on a quota system. Recognizing that the Jewish DPs might be living in the camps for long periods of time (Israel wasn’t established until 1948), American Jewish organizations tried to help the DPs
“to restore communal life and reinvigorate Judaism.” In 1945, however, not one complete set of the Talmud could be found in Europe. Judaism draws on two important bodies of tradition. “The first, known as the Written Law, comprises the Torah or Five Books of Moses. The second, known as the Oral Law, consists of a large body of orally transmitted material that was compiled and named Mishnah and, later, a larger body of discussions of the Mishnah were compiled in the Gemara. Mishnah and Gemara together are known as the Talmud, meaning instruction.” According to the American Jewish Historical Society, in 1946, a delegation of DP rabbis approached General Joseph McNarney, Commander of the American Zone of Germany, “asking the Army to consider publishing the Talmud.” With guidance from two Jewish Army chaplains, McNarney authorized the project. A Talmud from New York was sent to Germany and engravings made from it. “The plant that had previously printed Nazi propaganda was now printing 500 sets of the Talmud – the only time in history that a national government published the Talmud.” The Jewish DPs never forgot “the unprecedented humanism of Gen McNarney and the U.S. Army.”

Russel Lazega of Florida Insurance Advocates: Aspirin for Insurance Claim Headaches
BY BARI AURBACH
PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE Q: When it comes to insurance cases, why is Florida Insurance Advocates known for ensuring positive outcomes as their policy? RL: We’ve handled thousands of insurance cases across the state from county courts to the Supreme Court of Florida. Most of our attorneys have a strong background in the insurance industry and understand first-hand how insurance companies think. It’s valuable experience that we now put to work for the insurance consumer.
RUSSEL LAZEGA
September 14 - 20, 2011
Q: What “expertise” does the firm provide? RL: Basically, our clients include anyone having a problem with an insurance company — mostly homeowner’s insurance claims, accident/injury cases, life/health insurance claims, worker’s compensation and medical collections. We’ve also published several nationally distributed books on insurance law covering automobile, property and workers compensation; and regularly testify before both the Florida House and Senate
Insurance Committees on key insurance reform issues. We even teach insurance law seminars to other lawyers. Q: How would you define your firm’s philosophy? RL: We’re the aspirin for when your insurance company is giving you headaches. Too often people get caught up in the insurance claim run-around only to get frustrated and quit. We provide a team of fifteen lawyers in five cities to help guide our clients through to the finish line of this process. The strength of that team is that it includes lawyers who have literally written the book on PIP insurance law, workers’ compensation law, and Florida insurance practice. We also train insurance companies in the claims process. Q : How do you take excellence to “excess”? RL: From modest beginnings in 1998, we’ve expanded to become one of South
Florida’s larger law firms – yet we’ve never lost our small-firm spirit and youthful energy. We litigate major PIP and insurance cases as far as the Supreme Court of Florida but still keep a fun, casual atmosphere in the office and a steady flow of bagels and java at the work desks. I truly believe that people who like what they do project that positive energy on their clients. Q: When would someone need to have your firm involved? RL: With storm season upon us I’d say, “Know whom to call now.” For storm and flood claims, we keep a response team and backup systems ready to go so that we can get right to work immediately after a catastrophic event, and case evaluations are always free.

Elusive Security
Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION You may think the title for this article is an oxymoron, a combination of contradictory and incongruous words, and that is correct. However, it accurately reflects the problem we face trying to make our Nation secure. Security consists of taking measures to guard against espionage, sabotage and attack. Elusive means tending to avoid grasp. When we put those together we understand that our security is in fact elusive. Over the past few years it has become blatantly obvious that our financial security is elusive. All the efforts to guard our assets can slip through our grasp with one plunge on the Stock Market; a rise in the interest rate or one major corporation filing bankruptcy. Even the installation of ‘security bars’ on your home fails to completely prevent break-ins and theft. The tenth anniversary of the attack on 9/11 reminded us that even with our ‘homeland security’ measures in place the security of our Nation is elusive. Elusive security is nothing new! In the days of Ezekiel, The Prophet, it was necessary to post a watchman to ensure the security of the people. The watchman was responsible for sounding the trumpet as warning of the approaching attack. Even though he sounded the trumpet and warned the people, if one of the hearers did not heed the sound of the warning and was killed in the battle, his security eluded him
because he failed to resond to the warning. The watchman was not held accountable for that death. However, if the watchman was aware of the approaching battle and did not sound the trumpet and one person was killed, he was accountable for that death. Without the sounding of the warning security is elusive. During the time of the Judges in Israel, the Danites sent out five men to spy out the surrounding land. They came to a city called Laish and saw that the people were living in quiet security. The spies reported that the city was very good, a spacious land with secure people; a place where there is no lack of anything that is on earth. With only 600 armed men, the Danites, attacked and burned the city of Laish. In one day their security slipped away, eluded them. So what does that mean to us? Even today we need to post a watchman who will be alert and sound the warning when an attack is coming or our security will elude us. We live in a spacious land as secure people, a land where there is no lack of anything on earth, yet we have seen how elusive our security can be. We must be certain that because we live in a secure place that lacks no good thing that we do not become self-reliant and trust in our prosperity for our security. The Pslamist, David, stated the solution: “Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. (Psalm 127:1) In addition to our ‘homeland security’ and all the electronic devices designed to detect terrorists, we also need to ask God to guard our cities, our people and our Nation. Beauty of all-new 2012 Jaguar XJ is more than skin deep Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The new 2012 Jaguar XJ sedan is a stunningly beautiful automobile, but there is a lot more to it than the sleek and sexy styling. The new XJ is based on the next-generation of Jaguar’s lightweight vehicle architecture. The construction material is primarily aluminum, but it also utilizes magnesium and composite alloys to get a significantly lighter and stiffer body structure than one made of steel alone. The construction technique uses the same aerospace riveting and bonding processes refined by Jaguar on the XK models and previous generation XJ sedans. The nose of this new XJ follows Jaguar’s new design language with a mesh grille and slim standard xenon headlights. The muscular lower half of the car is contrasted with the slim and graceful quality of the roofline and the wrap-around rear window gives the impression of an exotic “floating” roof, while a standard panoramic glass roof
enhances the sense of light and space. There are six model variations in the XJ series, including standard and long-wheelbase (XJL) versions, the stretched XJL adding five inches of rear legroom. The model range includes the XJ with a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8; the XJ Supercharged with a 470-hp supercharged engine, and the limited-production XJ Supersport with a 510-hp supercharged engine. All XJ models are powered by variations of the AJ V-8 Gen III 5.0-liter V-8 first introduced with the 2010 XF and XK models. The all-aluminum four-cam Jaguar V-8 engines (16/23 mpg) combine high power with high efficiency, and utilize such technologies as spray-guided direct fuel injection and dual independent variable cam timing, plus a variable inlet manifold on the naturally aspirated engine. The XJ Supercharged and Supersport models have a twin vortex system (TVS) supercharger and twin water-cooled intercoolers packaged in the engine’s V. The XJ is very much a driver’s car. It’s agile and fast, yet elegantly comfortable. The XJ Supersport, for example, clocks 060 mph in just 4.7 seconds. All XJ models come with an electronically controlled, fully adaptive six-speed automatic trans-

An illuminated stop/start button pulsates until pressed. On the inside, the XJ’s interior is the most luxurious ever offered in a Jaguar, blending the latest infotainment technology and a wide choice of leather and wood finishes. The clean and simple leatherwrapped instrument panel sits low across the sightline, while bold architectural wood

‘Super’ supermarket choices
Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again
BY BARI AUERBACH Are you sure what you’re putting in your cart is smart for a healthful diet? Here are some tips that can help you make “super” supermarket choices: Yogurt: Some yogurts should have a “beware of sugar” warning posted on them. Be sure to check the sugar grams (especially on fruit flavor varieties) to make sure you’re not sabotaging your diet. A good low-fat yogurt choice will be low in sugar and packed with probiotics—similar to good bacteria found naturally in the intestine that can help prevent colds and improve immune response when you’re sick. Good Grains: A good rule to remember is “if it’s white – don’t take a bite!” Instead of high glycemic index foods like white bread, white rice or white potatoes – choose whole grain breads and cereals, oatmeal, brown rice and sweet potatoes with soluble fiber that can help prevent abdominal fat buildup, reduce total body fat and waist circumference. Turkey or Chicken Breast: Eating quality lean proteins like turkey and chicken breast can help facilitate fat loss by slowing down digestion and insulin production, thus making it easier for the body to break down and use stored fat for energy. Grilling or baking your own poultry is best but for a quick fix, Hillshire Farms makes a low sodium packaged turkey that is a good choice for minimizing salt intake. Eggs: Whoever invented pourable egg whites in convenient cartons deserves a medal! Eggs are an excellent source of protein containing vitamin B12 needed by the body to metabolize fat. Fitness model Tosca Reno, author of “The Eat-Clean Diet” recommends eating at least three or four egg whites per day along with one yolk. Wild Salmon: Roll your cart past the sushi rolls and catch some wild salmon instead. Wild salmon has fewer growth hormones and toxins than its farm-raised cousin, and it contains high levels of essential omega-3
fatty acids that can help suppress appetite, prevent fat deposition, increase energy expenditure and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, according to the Mayo Clinic. Go Nuts: As long as they’re not covered with caramel or chocolate, nuts - including almonds, pecans, peanuts and walnuts - are good sources of monounsaturated fat (MUFA), promoting fullness and helping increase the metabolic rate. Research conducted by David Katz, director of Yale’s Prevention Research Center, shows that women who switched to a 1,600-calorie, high-MUFA diet shed a third of their belly fat within a month. Eat Your Veggies: Vegetables like spinach and broccoli are high in soluble fiber, which acts as a cleanser for the digestive system. Vegetables also supply an abundance of cell-repairing antioxidants that provide vitamins and enzymes needed for slimming energy metabolism. Berry Good for You: Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are loaded with antioxidants and fiber. For every gram of fiber consumed approximately seven calories can be eliminated, according to research by Germany’s University of Kiel, Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science published in “The Journal of Nutrition.” Tea Time: Drinking at least three cups of green tea daily can help burn 80 more calories thanks to antioxidants that can induce breakdown of fat.

Toby Rose ASK TOBY I am an English teacher and recently I was amazed by what I saw. I asked students to pass their homework forward and the young lady who collected the papers was wearing a bracelet. As she handed me the papers, I saw that that the bracelet was inscribed with the word penis. To say that I was shocked is an understatement. Do you know about these bracelets? The first time I noticed one of my students wearing one of these bracelets was in August 2010. I was absolutely shocked. I told her that if she continued wearing bracelets that defined her sexually — in any way — her teachers, future employers and admissions counselors would not view her in a favorable light. I have seen other bracelets. They are called Boobi bracelets and raise money for breast cancer. I find that term sexually demeaning, as would my mother who had breast cancer. There are many fine charities that distribute bracelets that say for breast cancer. Not Boobi bracelets. I believe the website advertising the offensive bracelets is www.keep-abreast.org. Readers, please let me know your thoughts. Have you heard of Maudsley Family Therapy or the Maudsley treatment for anorexia? Please tell me what you know or where I can turn for help. Yes, I have. Also known as FamilyBased Treatment or the Maudsley Approach, the treatment has three clearly defined stages. Step one lasts from weeks to a year. It is based entirely upon restoring weight. In traditional therapy, parents were excluded. Currently, parents are very actively involved in their child’s recovery. Step two involves control over meals, which is gradually returned to the patient. The psychological environment and family issues that contributed to this disorder are discussed in step three. The cornerstone of the Maudsley Approach is “what we call an agnostic view of the illness, which means we don’t know what causes anorexia and we don’t care,” says psychologist Sarah Rabin. In other words, this approach does not concentrate on what caused the illness;
How long should a student stay in drug rehab treatment? That is a very difficult question. I believe no single treatment is appropriate for all teens. Effective treatment must delve into the multiple needs of the individual, not just the drug use. The duration of treatment should be determined by the therapist. Treatment time varies for each person. Some of the psychologists I contacted say length of stay in a residential program can range from 8 to 18 months depending upon the student’s commitment. What are club drugs? This refers to drugs that are used by teenagers and young adults at all-night dance parties, usually raves or trances: MDMA (Ecstasy), THB, ROHYPNOL (Roofies), Ketamine, Methamphetamine and LSD are some of the party drugs used at clubs. What is the new law regarding class size? In Pre-K through third grade, the class size is 18. In fourth grade through eighth grade, the class size is 22. In ninth grade through 12th grade, the class size is 25. The new law presents an interesting dilemma. With all the cutbacks, I don’t know how principals are supposed to keep classes at the required size when they can’t hire more teachers. I heard University of Miami’s ranking went up. Do you know anything about this? According to U.S. News & World Report, UM ranked 47th in the nation among all national research universities (beating out the University of Florida). One of my clients sent an interesting article about what our students are learning at different colleges and universities throughout the U.S. If you are interested, please visit the user friendly website, <http://whatwilltheylearn.com>. German vampire film premiere featured at MGLFF fundraiser BY BRIDGET N. PIETSCH
We are the Night (Wir Sind Die Nacht) — a sexy, suspenseful and adrenaline-pumping vampire film — will make its Southeast premiere at a fundraiser for the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF) produced by Icandee Events on Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Stage, 170 NE 38 St. in Miami’s Design District. This edgy tale of a provocative gang of female vampires, who are living large, making their own rules, and leaving a merciless trail of blood in their wake, was a multi-award winner at the 61st Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Awards) held last April in Berlin. “Women’s films are an important part of the mix of the festival,” said Franc Castro, executive director of the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. “We are truly excited to be partnering with Icandee to showcase this toothsome tale of Twilight meets The L Word.” The evening will begin with a cocktail reception from 8 to 9 p.m. where fellow “indie” and vampire film fans will enjoy appetizers and drinks before the film screening. After the film, guests can stay to enjoy more girl power and debauchery at the after party with music by deejays Run Sevim Run and Bonnie Beats, plus gyrating by sinfully sexy vampire dancers. “The MGLFF is an important part of our community,” said producer Lynn Bové. “I wanted to produce a night that would not only be sexy and tantalizing
but also raise money and awareness for the festival. Of course, choosing a female vampire film was a clear choice.” The $20 tickets include cocktail reception with a complimentary drink and appetizers, film and admission to the after party. Tickets are available online at <www.mglff.com> or by phone at 1-
877-484-8499. The MGLFF is a critically acclaimed event, now in its 14th year, held throughout South Florida in the worldrenowned historic South Beach district and throughout Miami-Dade County. The MGLFF is celebrated for its program of feature films, documentaries and short films by, about and of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-

Free banners for boaters help with manatee safety BY JANICE NEARING
As recreational boaters prepare to head to Florida’s waterways for the last holiday weekend blast of the summer, Save the Manatee Club sends out a reminder to exercise safe boating practices and to remain watchful for endangered manatees and other wildlife. Manatees are slow moving, and because they are mammals, they need to surface to breathe air. They also prefer shallow waters where they feed on submerged sea grasses. These factors combine to make manatees vulnerable to boat hits, and many are injured or killed by the crushing impact of the hull and slashing blades of the propellers. Boaters can be active participants in manatee protection by holding aloft Save the Manatee Club’s public awareness banner whenever a manatee is sighted in areas where boats are motoring close by. The bright yellow, 1.5- by 2-foot waterproof banner states: “Please Slow: Manatees Below.” They are provided free to the boating public in Florida from the club. Barbara Birdsey of the Pegasus Foundation came up with the banner idea
Tracy Colson displays one of the manatee banners. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
years ago while boating in the Jupiter Inlet/Hobe Sound area and waving a homemade cardboard sign to slow down boaters traveling close to manatees she had spotted in the area. As a result, the more effective, attention-getting yellow banners were produced.
“The banners continue to be distributed across the state, thanks to the generosity of the Pegasus Foundation, and to the continued support of Mrs. Birdsey,” said Patrick Rose, aquatic biologist and executive director of Save the Manatee Club. “As more and more boaters use the banners to communicate with each other on the waterways when manatees are sighted, I believe we can better work together to help prevent manatee injuries, suffering, and death,” Birdsey said. Even under the best conditions, manatees are often difficult to spot in the water. The club suggests wearing polarized sunglasses to eliminate the glare of the sun and help boaters to see below the water’s surface. Learn to recognize a manatee’s presence. Look for a swirl on the water’s surface and a manatee’s tail or nose. Shoreline property signs and matching boat decals also are available from Save the Manatee Club. They encourage boaters to slow down and feature the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s
(FWC) hotline number (1-888-404-3922) for reporting injured manatees. Requests for the free banners, signs, and decals can be sent via email to <education@savethemanatee.org> or by calling toll free at 1-800-432-JOIN (5646). Boaters are asked to observe all manatee speed zones and caution areas this Labor Day holiday weekend, and every day. Dr. Katie Tripp, the club’s director of Science and Conservation, urges the public to report manatee zone violations to the FWC by calling their hotline number. “Calling in each and every violation that is observed is critical,” Tripp explained. “We can’t assume that our neighbor will make the call or that a law enforcement officer will see this violation. Even if it’s not possible to make out the boat’s registration number, a description of the vessel, the locality where it was observed, the approximate time it was observed, and the direction in which it was traveling, can be useful information. “There may not be an officer on the water to stop that vessel on that day, but officers do make note of violations that are reported and consider these when deciding where to patrol. Reporting these violations is an important way that the public can protect manatees from debilitating or fatal collisions with watercraft.” Those who see an injured, dead, tagged or orphaned manatee, or a manatee who is being harassed, are asked to call the FWC hotline number at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922) or #FWC or *FWC on cellular phones, or use VHF Channel 16 on marine radios. For more information on endangered manatees, the Adopt-A-Manatee program, or to sign up for the club’s free e-newsletter, visit the club’s website at <www.savethemanatee.org>. Look for “Manatee Protection Tips for Boaters” on the club’s website at <www.savethemanatee.org/boatertips.htm>.

Regular family meals are essential to a child’s development BY PAUL MERKER
Family Day, Sept. 26, is a national initiative to remind parents that what kids really want at the dinner table is you! As families, we are always on the run with life pulling us in many different directions. Family meals create quality time that can prompt important communication with your kids and an opportunity to listen to what’s on their minds. Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children was launched in 2001 by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. Recent studies by Columbia University found teens having family meals five or more times a week were 42 percent less likely to drink alcohol, 59 percent less likely to smoke cigarettes and 66 percent less likely to try marijuana. The more often children and teens eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink and use drugs. The study also found that frequent family dinners were associated with better school performance. A Harvard University study found that family dinners were the most important family event in helping children develop language skills. Family meals encourage other benefits as well, including healthier meals resulting in kids who are less likely to become overweight or obese. By keeping the conversations light, you and your kids will talk more and you’ll be more likely to hear about serious problems. When parents make an effort to emphasize the importance of family togetherness, children respond in a positive manner.
MENTAL HEALTH Don’t let the family meals become an overwhelming burden on the family budget or your time, especially if both parents work out of the house. Even the simplest meals can become a family dinner experience. The goal is to get everyone to the dinner table and to spend quality time together. Enjoy your family dinners, talk to your kids about their friends and interests. Answer their questions in a non-judgmental atmosphere and listen to what they have to say. Family meals are for comfort and support. And here’s a great opportunity to start: On Saturday, Sept. 24, the South Miami Farmer’s Market, in cooperation with South Miami Hospital and the South Miami Drug Free Coalition, will celebrate Family Day with special market activities, including free wellness screenings, kids’ activities, entertainment, cooking demonstrations and a meal for the whole family. The event runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., with lunch served from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. When you stop by, be sure to say hi. I’ll be a table host during the meal. Most importantly, make a commitment to have a meal with your family at least five times a week.
Paul Merker, a Certified Addiction Therapist, has a private counseling practice and is a member of the South Miami DrugFree Coalition. He may be contacted by calling 305-498-0704 and via email at <merkerpaul1@aol.com>. For more information, go to <www.paulmerker.com>.

Would You Like Your Children to Pay for College Without Needing Financial Aid? What Financial goal should I have with paying for my children’s college? When planning to pay for college for your children, I encourage you to establish clear goals. First, you need to determine if you want to have your child’s education be paid with or without the need for financial aid. If you do not want your child or yourself to be burdened with a loan to have to pay back, then set the goal of having enough money saved before they enter college so that the college is paid. Who should pay for my children’s college? As parents we feel motivated or obligated to take on the full responsibility of paying for our children’s college education. The second goal is to establish a clear understanding with your child that if they want a college education they should invest in it by saving for it with earnings from a job. If they invest in their education, your child will value it more. What is an attainable financial goal? Harvard cost $52,000 a year for the 2009 – 2010 academic year. Saving $208,000 based on current costs is not attainable for most people. The University of Florida cost $16,690 a year for the 2009 – 2010 academic year. Saving $66,760 based on current costs is more attainable. Florida International University total matriculation and fees are $4,580.38 a year for the 2009 – 2010 academic year. Saving $19,215.20 is even more affordable. I suggest that you set your goal on a specific college and save enough to cover the actual cost when your child enters as a freshman. Your child should consider a job on campus during the school year and summer jobs during the college years.
I have a 401k plan at work; can I set up a matching savings plan with my child? Yes. If you can afford it and feel motivated to do so, you can match your child’s earnings dollar for dollar. My son, Steven, did pizza delivery for 4 hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a total of 12 hours a weekend. Back in 1995 – 1996 he earned $10 an hour which was $120 a weekend or $480 a month. I matched it $1 for $1. Our goal college was the University of Florida, and in 1996 the 4 year cost was $32,000. When he graduated from high school, we had $32,000 in the savings account. $16,000 he earned and $16,000 I matched. No financial aid was needed. Does a Matching Savings Plan have other benefits? The matching savings plan may create a new dimension in the relationship you have with your child. You become partners in achieving a long term goal. Your child should be motivated to in essence to earn twice as much as their pay check. Your child may begin to ask you how to red the account statement and how to invest the savings. Their buying habits may be influenced by their employment. Those $150 sneakers may mean 20 hours of their work so maybe they are not so motivated to buy them because it is not worth 20 hours of their life to have them after all. They may start to look for value in what they buy. They may even appreciate you a lot more for working for a living and paying the bills.
