eal estate – selling fast and foreign” recently made headline news when mckafka Development Group principals Fernando Levy Hara and Stephan Gietl were featured on a national CNBC segment. The focus of the story was the newsworthy success of their real estate development firm, specializing in the acquisition of distressed properties by purchasing condominiums in default, loans in default and real estate owned bank properties in South Florida.

Business and community leaders attending the Aventura Marketing Council’s Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon had an opportunity to see the CNBC segment featuring interviews with Hara and Gietl; and meet keynote speaker Dr. Andreas Staribacher, Austria’s former Federal Minister of Finance.

Before Staribacher shared insights about the future of the economy in the United States and Europe, Bob Hollander of Brown & Brown Insurance standing in for AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, welcomed guests to Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park.

Your Definition of You

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING How do you define yourself? If you were to introduce yourself, what would you say? “Hello, my name is__________ and I am ________.” You are more than whatever you just said about yourself. Your life is not just what you do for a living. Nor are you just your role like Mother or Father. If you said, “and I am” and you gave the name of a disease pause and consider restating who you are. Don’t define yourself by your disease or condition.

Take a piece of paper and use the same introduction but this time write how you feel, “and I am” happy, sad, scared, discouraged, hurt, angry, depressed or whatever you think defines your emotional state.

Now, using the same format, write your attributes, “and I am” courageous, determined, capable witty, fun, generous, caring, forgiving, supportive, loving, and so on. If you find yourself writing negative

attributes stop after each one and ask yourself who and why. Who said that I am selfish or clumsy or whatever and why.

Usually negative attributes are inaccurate.

They come from someone else’s needs and perceptions. Keep revising your list until you have eliminated the negative attributes that you listed.

Labels are potent. They are often intense and compelling. Sometimes, they dominate your personality. You may live up to them. You may become your labels even if they are not truly you. They have the power to influence and to direct your behavior. Labels can be very limiting. They prevent you from becoming yourself and all that you can be. They prevent you from becoming happy and successful. They are tyrannical and dictatorial. Take away their authority and their control over you.

Labels are not written in stone. They are written in sand. Just like the ocean at the beach, a wave can wash over them and erase them. Then you can write a new definition higher up on the beach where the water cannot reach. You can redefine yourself.

Mckafka Development Group hosts Dr. Andreas Staribacher Mckafka, from page 1 –––– Levy Hara explained that in 2009, he and Gietl co-founded Aventura-based mckafka Development Group - merging their visionary concepts to create a business plan offering sound investment solutions in a volatile business environment. In less than two years, mckafka brought more than 250 condominium units in South Florida to international investors.

Benchmarks of the firm’s success include the acquisition and expeditious sale of residences at Village East and Las Olas by the River in Fort Lauderdale, as well as condo units in premier downtown Miami buildings. The CNBC segment emphasized, “mckafka Development Group turned a thirty-percent profit on a Fort Lauderdale condo conversion in less than a year!”

“We’re very optimistic about the future of this country and the global economy,” Levy Hara said. “Although this is a tough time, this is still the land of opportunity and the strongest economy in the world.”

During Dr. Staribacher’s introduction, AMC members learned he is revered for a rare specialty: “Understanding the U.S. and European economies within a global context.”

Much of Staribacher’s presentation focused on why he feels economic recovery will happen much faster in the U.S. than in Europe. “I believe Europe’s problems are more serious because U.S. issues are more politically oriented but in Europe, they’re more financial. Also America is ‘one country, one system, one currency, two parties’ – while in Europe, there are so many factions - achieving ‘financial unity’ and compromise may never happen.”

Staribacher also noted he agrees with economists who feel issuing a common euro zone bond may be one of the only ways to stem the sovereign debt crisis threatening to overwhelm some of the European bloc’s biggest economies. “At the end of the day, I still believe euro bonds will be the solution - so Europe will have one system to help solve refinancing issues.”

BY MICHELLE ISHAKOV Ever eat a heavy meal and wonder why you feel tired, fatigued, or just simply want to take a good ‘ol nap? You might be thinking the reason is that you ate too much when in fact it is because you failed to combine the proper types of foods in your meal. Many people are unaware that proper food combinations lead to better digestion and health. Remember, food is supposed to give you energy, not take it away!

Hunger, irritability, gas, bloating, and sleepiness are all signs you may experience when your meal did not contain the appropriate ratios of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Our bodies are smart and let us know when something is good or bad for us. For this reason, it is important to pay attention to how you feel after meals.

Consequences of poor food combining include stunted digestion (food is stopped from being converted to nutrients), food allergies, and elimination of harmful toxins is disrupted.

Here are a few simple rules you may want to follow: • Protein and carbohydrate foods should never be combined.

• Combine proteins (fish, meat, chicken, or dairy) with vegetables and fats.

• Leafy, green salads may be combined with any protein, carbohydrate, or fat.

• Carbohydrates should be eaten with vegetables and fats.

• Eat fruits by themselves. Have them in the mornings or one hour before your meal or 2 hours after.

• Do not drink liquids with or immediately following a meal.

• Do not have coffee with meals as it does not let the body absorb the nutrients from

food. It is best to have a coffee at least two hours after a meal. You can drink an herbal tea after 30 minutes.

• Do not combine for example meat, rice, and cheese.

• Legumes can be eaten with potato, rice, breat, or grains because it combines as a complete protein.

You might be asking yourself, “What is a complete protein?” A complete protein is a protein that contains all essential amino acids. Protein is made of amino acids, 12 of which are made by the human body and 9 (essential amino acids) of which are obtained from food. Animal proteins including red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and dairy are all complete proteins. When consumed, you are taking in all essential amino acids in a single food source. Plant sources that qualify as complete proteins include quinoa, buckwheat, hempseed, and soybeans. Foods can be combined to make complete proteins like pairing beans and rice, beans and seeds, beans and nuts, beans and grains, hummus and pita bread, nut butter on whole grain bread, past with beans, veggie burgers on bread, split pea soup with whole grain bread, and tortillas with refried beans.

Following these simple food combinations will promote optimum digestion, energy, and even weight loss. You will expend less energy in digesting foods, enabling better absorption of nutrients.

‘Diet plateau busters’

BY BARI AUERBACH If you’ve been having a hard time reaching your weight loss goals, there could be some insidious culprits like these that are impeding your progress: Salads tossed with saturated with fat: It’s a salad – so how bad for my diet could it be?? People are often misled into thinking that eating a salad is a healthy choice – but not if there are so many high-caloric ingredients mixed in you can’t even see the lettuce! So toss the croutons, cheese and creamy dressings - and opt for veggies, lean proteins and balsamic vinegar to create a diet-friendly meal that truly lives up to the name “health salad.”

Think before you drink: Just eight ounces of Gatorade has 14 grams of sugar – and as for alcoholic drinks, DUI could stand for “dieting undone by insulin.” Water is still your best bet – but now you also have to beware of the sugar in trendy vitamin enriched and flavored waters. Let’s just all be happy they finally decided to take the vending machines with soda out of schools so kids have a better shot of not growing up to be contestants on “The Biggest Loser.”

Anyway but fried: Another misconception is, “If it’s a chicken sandwich – it’s good for me because it’s high in protein!” But if that chicken is fried, here’s the artery clogging news: A Tendercrisp chicken sandwich at Burger King packs a whopping 43 grams of fat and 6 grams of saturated fat.

To avoid frying your diet completely, avoid ordering anything battered, crispy or tempura-style and request baked, broiled, grilled or blackened to get all the benefits of the protein uncorrupted by Crisco.

Sickeningly sweet: Thousands of calories later – after you’ve finished a specialty coffee drink with the whipped cream on top whatever you do, don’t be sabotaged by one of the most common diet derailers – otherwise known as the “smoothie.” Even though a strawberry-banana smoothie

sounds healthy enough, many have as many as 70 grams of sugar. It’s also imperative to beware of energy and protein bars – always check the nutrition labels to make sure they don’t have as many sugar grams as candy bars.

Organic myths: If you like to shop at the take-out section of organic food markets, remember - no one ever said “organic” meant low fat. In fact, between all the cheeses, oils and various sauces mixed in with fish, chicken and vegetable dishes in the display cases, the number you see when you get on the scale could wind up rising even higher than the exorbitant price you paid.

Golden rules: To break through diet plateaus, the next time you start cooking or ordering out, remember these key phrases: “Hold the butter sauce; grilled not fried; steamed not sautéed; unsweetened, no whip; no cheese please…It will also be helpful to become accustomed to reading nutrition labels because ultimately, the most educated dieters are the least likely to hit plateaus!

2012 Audi A7 is a work of automotive excellence Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS It’s early yet, but the new 2012 Audi A7 is on my short list for “Car of the Year.”

This automobile is really special.

From a purely technical standpoint, the A7 is a marvel of automotive engineering.

It’s manufactured with aluminum, high-end steel and other lightweight materials using a hybrid aluminum construction that melds the lightweight metal with steel of various strengths. The A7 weighs about 15 percent less than a comparable all-steel body.

The A7 sits on a sporty, lightweight chassis and is powered by a highly efficient supercharged 310 hp V-6 (18/28 mpg) that is incredibly responsive and fast. It also comes standard with the latest generation of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive and the latest advanced driver assistance and multimedia systems. The A7 clocks 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. All A7 models

come with a state-of-the-art, eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

As for design, the A7 is a piece of automotive art on wheels. The five-door design combines the appeal of a coupe with the prestige of a sedan and the functionality of a station wagon. It is the next step in the Audi design scheme, with short overhangs, a long wheelbase, an expansive hood and low-slung, sporty proportions.

With a low roofline and integrated rear doors, the A7 has a coupe-like silhouette, with frameless door windows and side mirrors mounted on the doors. The C-pillar stretches to the rear and flows into the shoulder, while the sharp tornado line begins at the headlights, extends across the fenders, over the doors and ends in a slope toward the taillights.

An integrated spoiler automatically extends at 80 mph and then retracts at 50 mph. It also can be deployed and retracted manually via the push of a button. The two large, round tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system are incorporated seamlessly into the bumper and benefit from an attractive chrome application.

Optional full LED lighting blends visibility and style with low energy consumption and an extended service life. In addition to the 18 LEDs used for the daytime running lamps and 11 LEDs employed for the turn signals, two powerful LED units comprise the low- and high-beam head-

March Of The Living is a journey that encompasses memorial sites that pay tribute to the victims of the World War II Holocaust in Europe followed by the breathtaking beauty of the ongoing building and development of the homeland, Israel.

Of the 30 adults who participated this spring, Martin Baranick, at the ripe young age of 80 years, completed his 15th trip back to his native Poland with the March. As a 12-year-old child, and for the next 3 years of his young life, he was incarcerated in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

His descriptive statements of clear memories of that disastrously difficult time in his life, delivered to our group, within the walls of a Birkenau barrack in which he lived, helped us toward an initial attempt to grasp the utter helpless and hopeless conditions with which he and other Jews, and non-Jews were forced to contend. Martin’s overriding refrain, that characterizes his lifelong invective, in stories imparted on the tour bus, at dinners in the hotels, on tours through the camps, in the Ghettos of Warsaw and Krakow, in the synagogues and cemeteries we visited is, “Never

give up; Never, Never, NEVER give up.”

At an open air Tel Aviv falafel restaurant, I had the honor of being joined at lunch, by a 22-year-old Felasha, an Ethiopian Jewess, who traveled by night, on foot with her family, for four months, at the age of five years old, to enter, build a life, and live in Israel.

Giving up is not in her vocabulary.

Having exceeded the allowable weight limit for checked luggage, I had to move a few items into hand luggage. Upon seeing the wide-eyed interest of the Lufthansa ticketing agents in Poland, in the local Miami Community Newspapers I carried in my valise, I acceded to their wishes and gave them the newspapers. They overlooked the fact that I was still a pound above the weight limit.

However, the newspapers I had intended to use for on-location, “Read In……” feature photographs, in Israel, were no longer in my possession. Not a problem though, with all of the Community Newspapers online, I was able to access the latest editions of all of the papers on my laptop and have the Business Center in the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem print them, so that we could take the on-location photos.

Citi provides $100,000 grant to United Way of Miami-Dade

United Way of Miami-Dade recently announced that it has received a $100,000 grant from the Citi Foundation to support local financial education programs through the new Citi Fund for Financial Capability.

The fund uses an innovative and inclusive process to select programs for funding: United Way provided the necessary training in the grants process to a committee of Citi employee volunteers, who then brought their expertise and experience to bear as they reviewed applications, evaluated programs and made funding decisions.

The following nonprofit organizations and programs were selected for funding after the rigorous, competitive selection process: Junior Achievement — JA Company program: A business, entrepreneurship and economics curriculum will be taught to high school students through creative and interactive activities.

South Florida Urban Ministries — Ways to Work program: Families will be provided with much-needed financial education and asset development training as well as help with accessing car loans (since daily transportation is a common and fundamental challenge for lowincome workers).

YWCA — Economic Empowerment Program: Low- and moderate-income women will be empowered to improve financial conditions for themselves and their families through a basic understanding of banking, saving and the importance of good credit, and will be offered incentives for saving.

The programs were selected based on their ability to provide financial education for a significant number of clients; to measure in a meaningful way the impact of that education on clients’ lives, and to serve a diverse population reflecting the demographics of Miami-Dade County’s population, including low-to-moderate-income individuals.

‘The Diabetic Friend’ website launched by South Floridian

For the millions who have been diagnosed with Diabetes I or II, there now is a website/blog designed to assist people searching for information about their disease and meet other diabetics to share personal stories, symptoms and medication side effects as well as myriad other related experiences.

“The Diabetic Friend” was created by Mark E. Welch, a local author, after being diagnosed with diabetes less than a year ago.

Welch shares his experiences as a child, coming home from school to find his grandmother unconscious on the floor.

Knowing then only to give her orange juice and sugar, and call an ambulance, Welch reflects on the medical progress made on this disease that afflicts millions of Americans today.

“Thank goodness we’ve come a long way since then,” Welch, 47, said. “I know now she had become hypoglycemic from an overdose of her insulin, and/or not eating enough food to regulate her diabetes.”

His own personal wake-up call came recently during a vacation back home in Maine when he indulged in his favorite foods of pizza, lobster, sweets, fried clams, sugar and more sugar.

A week after arriving home, Welch began to feel worse and researched the Web for answers but could find none.

After being rushed to the ER and after tedious days of nonstop intravenous insulin feedings and extensive tests he was released with medications and prescriptions along with brief and general instructions how to adjust his lifestyle.

“There was no ‘diabetic team’ anywhere

to be found. I realized feeling lost, helpless and vulnerable,” he said.

After weeks of floundering, Welch finally enlisted his own created “team” of specialists and doctors that could help him get the proper tests, medications and education on living with diabetes on a daily basis.

He also went to the Web and on social networks and began building his own following of other diabetics looking for solutions. Finally, Welch decided to create his own website. Collaborating with All Design Studio and Eva Gustafsson, whom Mark has worked with for years, “The Diabetic Friend” was launched.

Within days responses and replies came in sharing personal diabetic experiences and ordeals. The site has grown to myriad subject matter, posts, links, blogs and, more importantly, people caring and sharing.

“There are a lot of good stories too,” Welch added. “Thanks to sharing with friends, many followers have learned how to eat right and exercise in a personal way they can enjoy and are starting to beat this disease.”

The goal and objective of “The Diabetic Friend” website is not only to help diabetics but potential pre-diabetics. It also can be a resource for friends and family members who are interested or have concerns about diabetes and want to help their diabetic friends.

Back to school can be a real stressful experience

Going back to school signifies a time of exciting new beginnings for teens, but it can also be a time of stressful challenges.

The start of each new school year presents its own rewards and problems. As children mature, they are faced with different choices and decisions – some which can change or impact their lives for many years to come. Whether it is their choice of courses, the friends they choose, the study habits they adopt or the vigor, or lack of, that they use to overcome academic challenges, the word “choice” becomes the operative word.

When a child is segueing from elementary to middle school, or middle to high school, or switching from private to public school (or reverse) there are always uncertainties that present themselves for both the child and his/her parents. Open communication amongst family members becomes essential to make this transition as smooth as possible. Your child will adapt many of your attitudes and fears, which is why you, as the adult, must set the standard that new

challenges are good and this new change will be a wonderful learning adventure.

As your child grows into his/her teen years, peer pressure becomes more important. Peer pressure can dictate the friends they keep, how important they view academic success, what extra-curricular activities they become involved in, and their weekend, social activities. Peer pressure to experiment with alcohol or drugs can impact the school year for teens and their families. Studies show that 48 percent of teens used alcohol in the past 30 days and 20 percent used marijuana in the past 30 days. The instances of teenage drug use continues to increase each year despite the widely talked about dangers of using drugs.

As parents, we are all aware of the challenge of talking with teens about the risk of drug and alcohol use and abuse. However, you can help your child navigate through all of the mixed messages and misinformation about drug and alcohol abuse. What steps can a parent take to try and help their kid not fall victim to social pressures that many teens feel at school?

Studies have shown that the most important thing parents can do to keep their kid drug free is to talk to them on a regular basis.

How you talk to your teen is vitally

EDUCATION important. If your teen is willing to share something, anything, parents must listen in a non judgmental and positive atmosphere.

Your children are more willing to talk to you when you are more willing to just listen. As a parent, strive to ask open ended questions about what they know and just sit back and listen to their answers. Open ended questions cannot be answered with a yes or no, and this line of communication shows you are really interested in finding out what your teen has to say.

Get involved in your teens school. As a child moves from elementary to middle school, and onto high school, they need continued parental support. Parents seem to disappear from the school as a child enters high school. Stay involved, attend PTSA meetings, attend Back to School Night, and learn the names of your teen’s teachers.

Parents can also get involved in the school by helping chaperone field trips, and other events that take place in the school, assist with a specific club or interest group, and attend school sporting events with your child. Get to know your teen’s friends and their families and where they go after school. If they are spending the night at a friend’s house, or attending a party at a home, call the hosting parents and make sure there will be parent chaperones present. Make your home available for social activities and a comfortable place for your child and friends to hang out.

In addition to getting involved with the school, parents should set limits on their children’s parameters and acceptable activities outside the home, such as what is expected of them when they attend after school events. For example, make a pact with your teen not to ride in a car with a

driver who has been using drugs or has been drinking. Let your teen know they can call you anytime and you will come and get them without an argument or pointing blame. The goal here is to earn their trust.

Bring back the family dinner! As families we are always on the run. Life is pulling families in many directions. The benefits that family dinners reap are many including better nutrition, a time to “check-in” with your teen and discuss what’s going on in your lives.

Family dinners allow time to stop texting one another while allowing time for open verbal communication and a time for your teen to develop language skills. Recent studies, by Columbia University, found teens having family dinners five or more times a week were 42 percent less likely to drink alcohol, 59 percent less likely to smoke cigarettes, and 66 percent less likely to try marijuana. The study also found that frequent family dinners were associated with better school performance. Enjoy your family dinners, keep the conversations light and leave the serious discussions for another time.

Family meals are for comfort and support.

When parents make an effort to emphasize the importance of family and togetherness, children respond in a positive manner.

Establish a loving, trusting relationship with your child. Encourage your teen to make healthy life choices, develop strong friendships, and find fun alternatives to alcohol or drugs.
