ou could see it in their eyes….the pride and excitement of learning new basketball moves being taught to them by the very celebrities they had only seen on television or read about. Kenny Anderson. Tim Hardaway. Dennis Rodman. Mario Chalmers. Anderson was there every day as the lead teaching pro and his presence was magnetic. It was hard to tell whether the parents or the youngsters were more excited to meet these basketball legends and pros. Floyd Raglin, CEO of Floyd Sports Marketing, was looking for the ideal location for the All-Star Basketball Camp, and all roads led to the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach… home to a professional basketball court that often serves as a practice site for the pros. “We created this camp to emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and to have the youth not only learn basketball, but good sportsmanship from their role models. I can’t thank Gary Bomzer, Chris Moltman and the entire staff of the JCC enough… they embraced this project immediately and gave it their full support. There are too many stories to tell, too many incredible memories that someday have to be put into a book! Warren Henry, Warren Henry Automotive, is a strong friend and supporter, and we couldn’t have done it without him. Robert Festinger and everybody at the Newport Beachside Hotel proved to be another incredible partner. We were all thrilled that Kenny Anderson was there every day, and Tim Hardaway and Miami Heat Guard Mario Chalmers were special guests as well as

The stars come out for All-Star Basketball Camp Continued from page 1 –––––– my well-behaved best friend, Dennis Rodman!” Jon Hirsch of All-Star Basketball spent hundreds of hours organizing the details of this major event that ran from August 9 - 12. “I really want to thank the players, staff and sponsors, with special gratitude to the JCC and Gary Bomzer for opening their home to us and believing in this project. Our camp was so successful that we’re now working on scheduling our first All-Star Basketball Academy for kids and adults – stay tuned.” Gary Bomzer, Executive Director of the JCC, embraced the idea of the camp, realizing the potential it held for the hundreds of youngsters who spent their summers at the JCC. After camp concluded, Bomzer said, “This was a wonderful basketball camp experience that provided an inspiring week for my kids. They were surrounded by role models, and it couldn’t have been better! I look forward to having many more programs with Floyd and his team.” Chris Moltman, the JCC’s Director of Health, Sports and Wellness, added, “ This was an amazing opportunity to showcase our basketball program to the community. Working with Kenny Anderson every day could not have been better as he instilled life lessons and invaluable experiences.” Kenny Anderson said, “ I loved teaching these young kids the exciting game of basketball. The All-Star Basketball Camp did an outstanding job and the bottom line… it was a great camp for the kids!” Superstar Dennis Rodman added, “The camp was absolutely amazing! Kids from all different age groups came here at one skill level and worked hard to reach the next level. By far, this was one of the best basketball camps I’ve had the privilege to be a part of.” Stephanie Trump, President of the I Have A Dream Foundation Miami, had some of her innercity children participating in the camp, and had only words of praise. “Thank you for the amazing experience our Dreamers had. It is extraordinary for children to be taught by players of this caliber.” And Elaine Adler, president of the Aventura Marketing Council, who helped Raglin and Hirsch with the event, added, “I saw the players giving their all’ as they taught the kids both the basics and the intricacies of basketball. The excitement on the kids’ faces told the whole story…from the tips on basketball moves to life lessons on sportsmanship, the All-Star Basketball Camp provided it all.” Title sponsor for the event was Warren Henry Zinn, Warren Henry Automotive, philanthropist and community leader who noted, “ I was very proud to be part of the All-Star Basketball Camp, and being able to help the kids and families of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC.” Additional sponsors were Aventura’s Finest Hand Car Wash, Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort. Male brains and female brains Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Recent studies have revealed significant differences in the brains of males and females. These revelations are now considered scientific facts. The implications of these discoveries are open to interpretation. How you interpret these facts is arbitrary. There is a fair amount of controversy surrounding the conclusions some scientists have reached. It is important to be aware that these interpretations are not facts but educated assumptions. The differences noted may or may not explain behavior, tendencies, talents and abilities. It is now known that men may have a slightly larger brain than women, but men and women have the same amount of neurons. Women have more white matter. Men have more grey matter. Men have a larger Hypothalamus, that part of the brain which houses sexual drive, which means that they may experience more sexual
stimulation. Women use both sides of their brain when listening while men use only one side of their brain. It is easy to jump to conclusions that may be accurate. For instance, upon reading that a man only uses one side of his brain to listen, he might assume that he listens better than a female because he does not need more of his brain to listen. A female might assume that since he is only using one side of his brain, he is not good at listening. She may assume that because she uses both sides she is the better listener. Do not use the facts to explain or excuse behavior. Avoid placing a value on the facts. Do not label the discoveries good or bad. Suspend your judgments. A longer this or smaller that does not mean that one is better than or less than the other. The differences should not imply inequality. They are simply variations on the same theme. They are examples of how nature made the male and female brains to compliment each other. Diversity is beneficial. It is part of a perfect deign for a species. The Emancipator of the Jews
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS According to Jewish historian Max I. Dimont, Jews may someday recognize Napoleon as one of their greatest emancipators, because he freed the Jews after their being locked up in the European ghettos for several centuries and brought them back into the mainstream of western civilization. Why were the Jews in the ghettos? Answer: the Protestant Reformation. In 1523, Martin Luther sought Jewish support in his dissent against the Church, “convinced that his Protestantism was a return to authentic Judaism.” In battling Luther, the Church also sought Jewish support, regarding Jews “as the living testament to Jesus.” The Jews rejected both sides with catastrophic results – the ghettos. Napoleon wanted the Jews out of the ghettos only because but he wanted their loyalty to modern France. In 1806, Napoleon summoned an Assembly of Jewish Notables, consisting of 112 outstanding Jews including several rabbis. As Napoleon posed twelve
questions, the Assembly soon realized that Napoleon was enabling them to emancipate themselves from the ghettos. The first questions concerned marriage, divorce and Jewish attitude toward Christian neighbors, such as, “Was divorce granted by a French court valid in Jewish eyes?” By their answers, “the Assembly transferred control of marriage and divorce from the rabbinate to the individual and the state.” The next questions concerned the attitude of Jews toward non-Jews and France. The Assembly “affirmed that Jewish law recognized no difference between Christians and Jews except in mode of worship and that every French Jew had a sacred obligation to France.” The answers to the remaining questions enabled Jews to enter businesses and professions of their choosing. Satisfied, Napoleon pulled a stroke of genius - he convoked the first Great Sanhedrin in 1800 years. This was the “Supreme Court” of the Jews before its destruction by the Romans and “one of the most revered institutions in Jewish life.” Eighty delegates gathered in Paris in February 1807, including a majority of rabbis and “gave religious sanction to the answers of the Notables.” As Napoleon’s armies swept eastward, “the affirmation of the Sanhedrin was a blast of the shofar that toppled the walls of the ghettos.”

It’s a conversation you should have
Susan Braley SENIOR LIVING So, you’ve admitted it. You are a caregiver. Now what? My next few columns will help you approach some sensitive topics with your elder loved ones and hopefully provide some insight to plan for their future. • Part One- Talk about a final plan • Part Two-Talk about a health/care plan • Part Three-Talk about a financial plan WARNING: these topics are interchangeable (W and can lead to healthy conversations and eventually less stress). If you have the luxury of time and are not in a panic mode yet, each topic can be approached with your loved one logically- as you are… making an emergency plan. You can break the ice by stating that we all need to make plans for the worst- so we know what to do. It’s better to think ahead, make that plan and give yourself peace of mind. For example: you have a hurricane plan. You know where your extra batteries are for the flashlight and you know that you will pack up the kids and dogs to head inland to your sister’s house if a category three is coming. So, doesn’t it make sense for you to know where your parents keep their important documents ?
TALK ABOUT A FINAL PLAN- It may be easier to start at the end and work backwards. Even if your loved one doesn’t need help now nor isn’t ready to think about assisted living, they can’t deny the inevitable fact that someone (not them) is going to need to deal with their final wishes at some point. When my husband and I dealt with my in-laws, we sat them down together and it was a positive organizational exercise. (Yes, it did take some time and plenty of patience). We looked at old photos, talked about their history, distant relations, shed some tears and by the time we were finished, we had a prepaid mortuary trust, we had written an outline of an obituary, chosen photos to use in the service and revised & made copies of all the important documents. This topic could be handled by the family or by a professional. If your loved one is not comfortable talking with you about it, you could meet with a trust officer at their local bank or an Elder Attorney to get started. This Final Plan topic turned out to be a good exercise. It brought us all closer together and gave the in-laws peace of mind knowing that their wishes would be carried out and it would lessen the burden placed on family in a time of grief. Take these steps now and, who knows? You might just feel better yourself.

Graduate Success is in Business Etiquette
Dr. Jodi Stoner SOCIAL ETIQUETTE Last week I had the opportunity to take a young graduate, who I have been consulting with, to a live CNBC discussion with others seeking jobs in this competitive marketplace. The consensus is that real world business etiquette training is a missing link. What matters most is the triumph of marketing you: the sum of your technical skills, social and people skills. Actually, 85% of your business success is your people skills. Most likely your university or last job did not groom you for the real deal. Your resume may be tops but that doesn’t land the job. Everything you do, from your first contact (usually a phone call or cover letter) to the interview is under scrutiny. Your knowledge of the “unofficial rules” is paramount to snagging the job. Before you approach the interview make sure your Facebook, Email address and voice message represent you. The company checking your “social skills” out is a telling part of the getting to “really know you” process. For the job interview, nothing speaks louder than your body language, attire, and attitude. Be on time. Start and finish with a firm handshake. Great communication, eye contact, and good posture are good door openers. Attentive listening will pay off when it is your turn to ask questions about the business. Do your research. Know as much as possible about the company you are seeking to work for and the position you are
seeking. Make sure you show your knowledge by referring to specific aspects of the company practices during the interview. If you are dead serious about landing the job, practice, rehearse, and practice again. Come to the interview dressed professionally: men with a suit and women with a pantsuit or suit with stockings. Leave short hemlines and bling at home. Men should remove their earrings; women should wear small ones. Bring a professional looking pen, a leather pad attaché, a business card in a case, your resume (several copies) along with any paperwork the company has asked you to fill out. The resume and paperwork should be separate in a folder. You will come across well organized. Whatever you do, leave your cell phone off. Don’t even bring it into the interview. No chewing gum. Leave that indelible impression; write an Email thanking the interviewer, followed by a handwritten letter which will be put into your file. You will stand out. Don’t let them throw that curve ball with a “dining interview”. Prepare in advance. Yes, you are being judged on how well you represent yourself and the company. Brush up on your table manners and dining protocol now. Come across as confident and poised. Remember that your technical skills are but a small part of what companies are looking for. They seek personal who will represent their company and a team player who gets along with others. It’s often a total package that seals the deal. Dodge Challenger delivers nostalgia and excitement Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS I had to drive up to North Carolina recently and — as luck would have it — I was testing the 2010 Dodge Challenger for the week, the perfect car for the trip. After crossing the Georgia state line, virtually everywhere we stopped someone came up to me with a question about the car, which made my job of digging up information a great deal easier. And the Challenger turned out to be an exceptionally nice road car — powerful and responsive, easy to handle and really quite comfortable. By the time we returned, I found myself with a grudging respect for the big American muscle car. And the Challenger does have a lot going for it — an unmistakable design, a proven rear-wheel-drive platform, powerful engines and technology — to the delight of driving enthusiasts around the country. The Challenger is a five-passenger, twodoor coupe, but rides on the same rear-drive
platform that complements the four-door Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. It’s available in three models — SE, R/T and SRT8 — and you have a choice between two legendary HEMI V-8 engines or a fuel-saving V-6. Challenger SE — lists at $21,320 and comes with a 250-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and fourspeed automatic. It has cloth upholstery (leather is optional), air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, 60/40 split-folding rear bench, tilt/telescoping steering column, cruise control, remote keyless entry, AM/FM/CD/MP3 four-speaker stereo, visor vanity mirrors, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Other options include an eight-way power driver’s seat, moonroof, disc changer and navigation with real-time traffic, a 276-watt Boston Acoustics audio system, 18-inch aluminum wheels, ABS and electronic stability control and traction control. Challenger R/T — goes for $29,320 and is powered by a 370-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 mated to a five-speed automatic. It comes with a bodycolored rear spoiler and mirrors, metal fuel filler door, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, illuminated visor mirrors, dual chromed rectangular exhaust pipes and fog lights. Upgrades include 18-inch aluminum wheels with wider tires, stability control, bigger antilock brakes and a firmer suspension. Options include leather upholstery, naviga-

tion system, a 368-watt Boston Acoustics sound system, bi-xenon headlamps, 20-inch chromed aluminum wheels, functional hood scoops, keyless go, remote start, a trip computer with performance pages and steeringwheel audio/data controls. Challenger SRT8 — lists for $39,320 has a 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V-8, Brembo brakes, a special suspension and a limited-slip differential. Many of the options on the R/T are standard, including an upgraded sound system, bixenon headlamps, trip/data computer, leather, keyless go, and Sirius satellite radio. The
SRT8 rear spoiler is flat black, the hood scoops are functional and the fuel filler is polished aluminum. There are 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and sport seats are standard. There are more than 25 safety and security features and modern amenities, including Uconnect Navigation with voice commands. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida opens Fall season Oct. 2nd at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center
Petrouchka ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
After last season’s superb success of Harlequinade, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, under the artistic direction of Vladimir Issaev, will launch their 2010-2011 season with a very unique repertoire of his own and of guest choreographer Yanis Pikieris. The company will perform Issaev’s Four Seasons and Pikieris’ new piece Danzon No. 2, followed by the stunning production of Petrouchka. Petrouchka, is a one act and four scene ballet, written by Igor Stravinsky. The ballet is set in the middle of a Russian fair and tells the story of three puppets: Petrouchka, the clown, (Fan Shi) who is hopelessly in love with the Ballerina, (Kaori Fukui or Chloe Mc Kanne) who is enamored with the Moor (Andrey Konkin). All three puppets are commanded by the Charlatan, a sinister, bearded puppeteer and magician, who gives the puppets human emotions. Issaev’s extraordinary set of four Pas de Deux: Four Seasons, will be performed to music of Verdi from his Grand Opera Les Vêpres Siciliennes. Issaev’s ballet premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg Russia with extraordinary reviews while Danzon No.2 premiered in Mexico by Ballet de Monterrey and now renowned choreographer, Yanis Pikieris, brings this piece to Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. Both neo-classical pieces, performed by the professional dancers of the company, enhance the troupe’s repertoire and high performance quality. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida continues its growth. Ten professional dancers com-

Fourth quarter forecast seems more promising than 2009
Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH September will prove a pivotal month as the third quarter ends and the fourth quarter begins in October. September traditionally is “Back to School” time, but I believe it could well turn into “Back to Business” time. It also should serve as a “ramping-up” time for the fall holidays. I’m already seeing Halloween sale signs around town and we all know that right after that come the Thanksgiving and Christmas sales as we approach the end of the year. I’m hopeful that we will see an increase in seasonal hiring as retailers get ready for the holidays. This should help cut unemployment numbers through the end of the year, but improvements will not be reflected until fall employment numbers come out in the first quarter of 2011. Whether those part-time jobs get converted into full-time positions could be a key indicator of how the country’s unemployment problems evolve into 2011 and beyond. Closer to home, South Florida trade and tourism continue to make gains. I believe the upcoming fall/winter tourist season will continue to see more growth through the fourth quarter and into early next year. According to the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, tourismrelated employment and room rates are holding up. This means if you’re looking
REMER & GEORGES-PIERRE PLLC ATTORNEYS AT LAW • EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION • RETALIATORY DISCHARGE • HARASSMENT CLAIMS • WHISTLEBLOWER CLAIMS • FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE • WAGE AND HOUR CLAIMS • EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS • HANDBOOKS AND POLICIES
for cheap rooms, you may have a hard time finding great deals around South Florida’s prime tourism destinations. So what can we expect for the fourth quarter? While we’ve seen signs that the recovery continues, we’re also seeing indications almost daily of it slowing down. A lot of the lost momentum may be coming from the business slowdowns we’ve seen during the summer. Although the end of 2010 should show signs of continued consumer reluctance to go deeply into debt over the holidays, holiday spending still may be better than last year. South Florida’s economy will continue to be held back by long-term problems in the housing, real estate and job markets while tourism, foreign trade and foreign investment should continue to make solid gains through the end of the year. Until hiring improves and unemployment rates start to decrease, economic news will be dominated by weak consumer spending, stalled hiring and continued foreclosures. Despite this, we can expect the fourth quarter of 2010 to be a little better than the end of 2009. Watching the recovery continues to be about as exciting as watching paint dry, but there are improvements in the local economy that bode well for the future. The bottom line for families this quarter is: Watch your bills; look for additional ways of earning and saving extra money for the family, and if you do any holiday shopping, use cash and demand a cash discount. Watch Al Sunshine’s “CBS Money Watch” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon.

What’s smart to put in your cart BY BARI AUERBACH If there was a reality show called “Grocery Cart Ambush” providing extreme grocery cart makeovers, a lot more people could learn what’s smart to put in your cart to help prevent excessive amounts of sugar and fat grams from sabotaging efforts to lose weight, gain muscle and promote longevity. Oatmeal The soluble fiber in oatmeal and other whole grain products such as brown rice, whole grain breads and cereals can prevent abdominal fat buildup, reduce total body fat and waist circumference. A 2008 study published by “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” shows that obese adults on a diet with four to seven daily servings of whole grain foods lost twice as much abdominal fat as those who ate refined counterparts of the same foods. Turkey or Chicken Breast Eating quality lean proteins like turkey and chicken breast can help facilitate fat loss by slowing down digestion and insulin production, thus making it easier for the body to break down and use stored fat for energy. Eggs Eggs are an excellent source of protein containing vitamin B12 needed by the body to metabolize fat. Fitness model Tosca Reno, author of “The Eat-Clean Diet” recommends eating at least three or four egg whites per day along with one yolk. Wild Salmon Wild salmon has fewer growth hormones and toxins than its farm-raised cousin, and it contains high levels of essential omega-3 fatty acids that can help suppress appetite, prevent fat deposition, increase energy expenditure and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, according to the Mayo Clinic. Nuts Nuts, including almonds, pecans, peanuts and walnuts, are good sources of monounsaturated fat (MUFA), promoting fullness and helping increase the metabolic rate. Research conducted by David Katz, director of Yale’s Prevention Research Center, shows that women who switched to a 1,600-calorie, high-MUFA diet shed a third of their belly fat within a month.
Low-Fat Milk Calcium in milk and other dairy products such as yogurt and cheese can help boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells. Researchers at the University of Tennessee found overweight people consuming three servings a day of calciumrich dairy lost more belly fat than those who followed a similar diet with less diary servings. Green Vegetables Vegetables like spinach and broccoli are high in soluble fiber, which acts as a cleanser for the digestive system. Vegetables also supply an abundance of cell-repairing antioxidants that provide vitamins and enzymes needed for energy metabolism that can help slim abs. Research published in “The”Journal of Nutrition” on Mar. 25, 2009 shows that people who ate higher amounts of antioxidants had smaller waists as well as less visceral and subcutaneous fat. Berries Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are loaded with antioxidants and fiber. For every gram of fiber consumed approximately seven calories can be eliminated, according to research by Germany’s University of Kiel, Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science published in “The Journal of Nutrition” in 1990. Green Tea Drinking at least three cups of green tea daily can help burn 80 more calories thanks to antioxidants that can induce breakdown of fat. A study published in “The Journal of Nutrition” found that green tea, along with exercise can especially enhance fat loss in the abdominal area.

Discover Scuba Diving BY CAPT BOB KRAUT Now that I have gotten you hooked with my first two articles, I can begin to seduce you into the adventure sport of Diving. My columns will be sequential each week leading and tempting you, enticing you to the realm of the Deep. I will start at the beginning. Discover Scuba Experience is a PADI sponsored program where we introduce people to diving in a swimming pool. First we make sure that you are healthy enough to participate by having you fill out a medical statement, then we show you a video on the sport of diving. Although it is not a certification course, we still present you with information that you need to know about what you are doing. Things like hw to clear a flooded mask, how to equalize the pressure in your ears as you descent so you do not hurt yourself. We teach you not to touch any marine life because some of the coral and critters can sting you or cause a rash. But mostly it is about how to breathe, relax, and enjoy the miracle of the ocean reef. The first hour we spend setting you up with all the equipment you need. We supply masks, fins, snorkels, as well as a Buoyancy Device, weight belt, a Regulator, a Tank and gauges. Within minutes you are under the
water breathing through the regulator, thinking, Oh My God is this cool. We play a game with our students with one of those underwater torpedoes so you forget that you are breathing underwater and concentrate on trying to return the torpedo to the other students in a straight line. After about 10 minutes, you start doing laps of the pool underwater so you can experience moving through the water quietly and effortlessly. When you start to feel comfortable with all this we are ready for Part Two. Part Two is a diveboat trip to a shallow reef just offshore with a PADI professional at your side. While waiting for the others to enter the water everyone holds onto a tag line, that is a floating 25 foot line trailing the boat with a buoy on the end. Everyone steps together until we are ready to descend. Descending very slowly we all hold our nose and begin to equalize the pressure in our ears, very similar to what happens as an airplane ascends. Now we are on the reef breathing underwater, having our noses tickled by our exhaled breaths, feeling the surge of the current on our bodies, the temperature of the water, watching the sea fans ebb and flow, enjoying the countless different kinds of fish that are almost touchable swimming in all directions at once, some chasing each other in schools … Welcome to my world.

Humorous first novel all about life after pink slip “There’s nothing amusing about getting laid off — except when it’s a story told by the brilliant Terry Shine, one of the funniest writers I know.” —Dave Barry
BY SARAH BREIVOGE Nothing Happens Until It Happens To You (Crown, 304 pages, $23 hardcover), is T.M. Shine’s all-too-real debut novel about a man forced to leave behind the security and predictability of his past to face his dysfunctional family and a world disinclined to do him any favors. Jeffrey Reiner has been fired — but he is not crying about it. Though a self-designed social misfit, he accepts the advice that to make it in these tough economic times he has no choice but to throw himself at any opportunities that come his way, no matter how humbling or embarrassing. Egged on by a slacker neighbor, an unorthodox state facilitator, and a 1-800 mental health counselor, Reiner stumbles into a highly comic and entirely outrageous journey of self-discovery. Reiner realizes his job loss may have become the catalyst for his own family’s unraveling: His teenage daughter has dismissed him; his only son may have the genetic wiring of a serial killer (a reality he fears he may have never picked up on if he hadn’t lost his job), and he’s certain his wife is having an affair but is too frightened by the truth (that having an affair includes sex) to confront her. Trying to stretch his meager severance, he takes on sporadic day work trying everything from dressing as the Statue of Liberty to breeding suckerfish to cleaning pools at foreclosed homes. (Shine has plenty of inspiration to draw from, having worked his own odd jobs, including: pizza deliveryman, lab courier, shellfish harvester, gas attendant, sweepstakes mail sorter, school bus driver, demolition man, drugstore manager, and box maker.) Despite receiving a strict daily itinerary from his estranged wife to keep him on track, Reiner inadvertently finds himself veering off course. Suddenly he is trying to balance the search for a job with the hunt for a man he no longer knows. Inspired by a cover story Shine wrote for

Shine is an award-winning journalist and author based in South Florida who has written on topics ranging from spending a month in fourth grade at the age of 32 to hunting down an elusive Lizard Man in the backwoods of South Carolina. A frequent contributor to the Washington Post Magazine, he has written for numerous publications and been featured on National Public Radio’s This American Life. He is the author of two memoirs: Fathers Aren’t Supposed to Die and Timeline: A Month in the Life of a Guy Who Refuses. Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties expands its Aventura facility BY LEE STEPHENS Somewhat contrary to most medical practices today, in particular with the slow economy and the new Healthcare Bill, Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties has continued to expand its facility in Aventura, FL. The practice founded by Dr. Norman Gaylis over 23 years ago has achieved local, national, and international recognition for its excellence in diagnosing and treating patients with arthritis & rheumatic diseases. Some of the patients who come to the facility are looking for additional recommendations after seeing other physicians for their musculoskeletal problems and others are seeking a facility where they can receive treatment which is not available to them at their current physician’s office. The location behind the Aventura Hospital, 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 200, has recently added an additional 2500 square feet to their existing space making the total space 9500 sq. ft. The facility is entirely dedicated to treating patients with arthritis and rheumatic disorders. Arthritis & Rheumatic Disease Specialties has
become widely recognized as one of the few dedicated facilities in the United States to have multiple types of onsite ancillary services available for the diagnosis and management of their patients. The Aventura office consists of a state of the art facility which includes an open MRI, Infusion center, Laboratory, Bone Densitometry, x-Ray and Ultrasound services. The open MRI unit is especially designed to facilitate a comfortable experience for patients needing an MRI but who may be in pain and/or suffer from claustrophobia. The in-house infusion center provides a comfortable quiet place for patients to receive their infusion therapy while watching a movie. The high complexity state certified clinical laboratory performs routine blood tests as well as those tests which specifically focus on the diagnosis and management of autoimmune disorders. X-rays are performed using digital technology, osteoporosis evaluation is done by bone densitometry and ultrasound techniques are used to assist with diagnostic decisions as well as joint injections. These routine procedures separate the practice of Arthritis & Rheumatic Disease Specialties from others.
Part of the expansion space will now be home to the certified physical and occupational therapy department, which will perform additional rehabilitation services. This decision to expand the rehabilitation services was prompted by the overwhelming demand from patients who had previously been treated at the physical therapy facility. The Rehabilitation facility specializes and focuses on patients who have purely arthritis and musculoskeletal problems with the emphasis being on pain reduction, improvement in muscle strength, and the goal of obtaining a level of daily activity for each patient which will allow the patient to control their arthritis as opposed to the arthritis controlling them. The clinical research division has grown dramatically over the last 3 years and has become well known for the quality of the research it performs. There are ongoing clinical research trials using many new medications for diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis and gout. The research facility has a dedicated staff which focuses on providing patients with a treatment option when conventional approved treatments have failed. The type of research and quality of the practice procedures performed at this facility are illustrated by the fact that Dr. Gaylis is presenting 5 research papers at the internationally prestigious meeting of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), which will be held in June in Rome. Furthermore, Dr. Gaylis is president of the International Society of Extremity MRI in Rheumatology and has had numerous papers published and procedures peer reviewed in medical journals over the last 6 months. Along with Dr. Norman Gaylis, there are two other board certified rheumatologists who provide excellent care to the patients at the facility. Dr. Elana
Oberstein, a Harvard University graduate and University of Miami trained rheumatologist, has now been with the practice for more than 2 years and has been a big reason for the growth of the practice over the last two years. She has treated many patients both in Aventura hospital and in the office who suffer from severe cases of autoimmune disorders such as lupus and vasculitis, just one of her areas of expertise. Dr. Marcos Maldonado, who is a former Clinical professor from the University of Miami, has been with the practice for one year. His experience as a rheumatologist is extensive and in fact, he has recently been appointed as the president of the South Florida Lupus Foundation. The team of rheumatologists at Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties offer a combination of expertise in different areas and this allows for all patients who are seen at the facility to receive a consultation using a team approach when needed. Julia Savloff PAC is the physician’s assistant for the practice and has been completely dedicated to the specialty of rheumatology for the last 10 years. She can be found on most days actively involved either in the infusion room, clinical research or assisting the physicians in treating their patients. The aim of Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties is to be known as the center of excellence for the treatment of all forms of arthritis and rheumatic diseases in South Florida as well as the United States. Our goal is to evaluate and treat patients within one week of calling for an appointment, or in urgent cases be fit in within 24 hrs of the emergency. It is both the quality of care as well as availability of the rheumatologists in our state of the art environment that truly makes Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties one of the best practices of its type in the country.
