Grove artist seeks museum for his kinetic art collection BY RON BEASLEY ongtime Coconut Grove artist Leonard King is nearing the day when he no longer will be inclined to create his kinetic artwork and is on the lookout for a museum or collector willing to accept his legacy collection to save for future generations. King, 81, has been a resident of South Florida since the middle of the last century and candidly agrees that he just may be the longest surviving member of the original Coconut Grove artists’ colony. He was a close associate of the late Tony Scornavaca, who many say was responsible for starting what eventually became the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. “That was many moons ago,” King said. “Through Tony, I met Gene Massin and the entire circle of artists who were in the Grove at that time.” King came to South Florida from Passaic, NJ, in 1950 to attend the University of Miami and first moved into the Grove in 1962. “A little later I got a houseboat and lived at Dinner Key Marina for 16 years,

Officials unveil restored mural at Freedom Tower The restored mural at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Freedom Tower was unveiled recently by (l-r) U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez; Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, MDC president; Dade Heritage Trust CEO Becky Roper Matkov; Sylvia G. Iriondo, activist, human rights champion and president of Mothers Against Repression, and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. The iconic building was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior in fall 2008.
