Biscayne Bay Beacon Council names award winners for 2011

T

he Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s official economic development organization, has announced the winners of the Ninth Annual Beacon Awards. This year’s winners will be recognized on Wednesday, May 11, at Jungle Island. The awards program recognizes people, businesses or organizations for their significant contributions to the local economy in the areas of job creation, business expansion, corporate citizenship and leadership in their respective industries. “Today we announce the winners of the Beacon Awards to recognize and celebrate a wide range of dynamic organizations and individuals which are firming up our economy,” said Jack Lowell, Beacon Council chair. “They are the best, and we thank them all for their commitment and many contributions to our community.” The most prestigious honor of the evening, the Jay Malina Award, will be given to Manuel D. Medina, CEO and chair of Terremark Worldwide Inc. The award is presented to the business executive who has contributed the most to the growth of his or her industry in Miami-Dade County. The award is named in honor of the late founder and co-chair of the One Community One Goal project, Jay Malina. Medina joins a list of prestigious past winners who include Brian Keeley, Gloria and Emilio Estefan Jr., Peter Dolara, Phil Frost, George Feldenkreis, Bill Graham, Armando Codina and Dr. William Murphy. Medina was the driving force behind the creation of Terremark’s Network Access Point (NAP) of the Americas, one of the most connected datacenter facilities in the world and the unrivaled gateway for Internet traffic between North America, Europe and Latin America. Since opening the NAP of the Americas in 2001, Medina has grown Terremark into a $2 billion IT infrastructure company that is recognized widely as a leader in the areas of cloud computing,

Miami Bayside Foundation announces loan recipients

he Miami Bayside Foundation announced its first loan recipients for 2011 during a reception at Bayside Marketplace’s Marina Stage on Wednesday, Mar. 2. The recipients are Joel and Leticia Pollack of Panther Coffee LLC and Carlos Alvarez of Sound Theory Live Holdings LLC d.b.a. The Stage. Panther Coffee — a specialty coffee roaster, retailer and wholesaler specializing in the small-batch roasting of coffee beans and the preparation of coffee beverages — is located in the Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. Just up the street in the Miami Design District is The Stage, a live music venue presenting daily performances and a food and drink menu, with family-oriented activities

including music, arts and crafts on Sundays. Each of the recipients received a $50,000 loan with an interest rate of 6 percent. The loan moneys are made possible by an annual contribution by GGP Bayside Marketplace. GGP Bayside Marketplace’s 2011 contribution presented during the reception totaled more than $300,000. The Miami Bayside Foundation, a Miamibased nonprofit established in 1986, has created and administers a loan program for minority businesses, has established a scholarship fund for minorities studying entrepreneurship and business, and provides technical assistance to community and development organizations in Miami. n celebration of Women’s History Month, the MiamiDade Park and Recreation Department (MDPR) and the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women are hosting the 23rd annual ‘In the Company of Women” awards celebration on Thursday, Mar. 31, 6-9 p.m., at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Ave. in Coral Gables. The event includes a cocktail-reception and an awards presentation recognizing 12 local women for their longstanding contributions to the residents of Miami-Dade County. WPLG Channel 10 reporter Neki Mohan will emcee the festivities. As part of the program, a representative from the Office of the Mayor will present the Mayor’s Pioneer Award, which honors a woman who has proven leadership, creativity, and vision in addressing community issues in Miami-Dade County within the past 10 years.
