Biscayne Bay MAM’s structural foundation now complete in Miami’s Museum Park BY ALLIE SCHWARTZ
T
he team spearheading the development of Miami Art Museum’s new Herzog and de Meuron-designed facility in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park has completed the building’s structural foundation, marking the last major milestone before vertical construction begins. The new Miami Art Museum (MAM) is scheduled to open to the public in 2013. News of the foundation’s completion comes as MAM continues to cultivate private sector support as part of its capital campaign. Aaron Podhurst, chair of the Miami Art Museum Board of Trustees, noted that progress at the construction site is having a direct impact on fundraising efforts. “It’s amazing what happens when you put a shovel in the ground and construction takes flight,” Podhurst said. “Now that our foundation is complete and vertical construction of the new Miami Art Museum is right around the corner, we are seeing a significant uptick in private sector interest to go along with the county’s strong support.” The new Miami Art Museum will comprise 200,000 square feet of programmable space, including 120,000 square feet of interior space — more than three times the

nsurance executive Gary Reshefsky, a partner with the MDW Insurance Group located in Coral Gables, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Miami on July 14 in recognition of his efforts serving as the city’s director of Risk Management during 2010-11. Reshefsky is a resident of Coconut Grove. “We wish to thank Gary and his family for the long hours he devoted as director of Risk Management,” Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado said. “We are grateful for your hard work and efforts which helped the City of Miami save a lot of money.” While serving clients and maintaining his role at MDW Insurance, Reshefsky acted for 12 months as the city’s director of Risk Management, the third largest city department behind only Police and Fire. In this role, he oversaw a $60 million budget, redesigned
the city’s healthcare plan, restructured the property insurance program, secured an enhanced liability and workers compensation program, introduced a cloud-based Risk Management Information System, redesigned the claims management process and various other risk management activities. MDW Insurance Group is a full service insurance and risk management firm based in Coral Gables with more than 50 employees. Prior to MDW Insurance, Reshefsky was the director of Risk Management at USI Insurance Services in Miami. His expertise includes working as a broker in the London and Chicago insurance markets and as an attorney for the law firm of Greenberg Traurig. Reshefsky holds a Juris Doctorate and MBA from the University of Miami and a Bachelor in Business Administration from George Washington University. Committed to community service, he is a member of the National Professional Liability Underwriting Society and a vice president of the Miami Children’s Museum.
fter months of a national search, New World School of the Arts has selected dancer and educator Mary Lisa Burns as its new dean of dance. The seasoned administrator, who comes to NWSA with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of dance education administration, will head the high school and college dance programs at NWSA. “It is an honor to be succeeding Dean Lewis, and I look forward to working with everyone at New World School of the Arts to continue to build upon this legacy of excellence in training and nurturing talented young dancers and choreographers,” Burns said. “I envision a program which, based on our outstanding curriculum of dance training, continues to create exciting experiences for our students and which expands opportunities for them professionally in the 21st Century.” Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, provost of New World School of the Arts said, “Mary Lisa Burns brings experience from both the professional and educational worlds of d a n c e .
