Biscayne Bay ‘Miami Made’ program invites artists to submit proposals BY SUZETTE ESPINOSA FUENTES

T

he Adrienne Arsht Center’s commissioning program, “Miami Made,” is calling for new proposals from South Florida artists interested in extending the boundaries of the performing arts by creating, writing, composing, or choreographing a new work. If selected, that work may be supported by and presented as a work-in-progress or a completed short work at the Adrienne Arsht Center during the 2012 Miami Made Weekend. Miami Made has been supporting the work of local artists since before the center opened, beginning in 2005. Artists living and working in South Florida are invited to submit proposals for new works in any area of the performing arts, including mixed media, which extend beyond current artistic practices and incorporate new technology. Projects may be of any scale and suitable for performance either indoors or outdoors. Exhibition pays tribute to Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa

R

egistration is open for the 16th Annual Miami/Fort Lauderdale Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd. in downtown Miami. Race participants may register as individuals or form teams and start collecting pledges for the power of 10 challenge. Organizers are expecting more than 20,000 participants and 1,500 breast cancer survivors to participate in this year’s Race for the Cure. Activities include a survivor procession and ceremony, 5K run and walk,

Making its U.S. premiere, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Art Gallery System celebrated the opening of “Mona Lisa Unveiled,” an extraordinary exhibition inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic portrait, the Mona Lisa. The exhibition showcases various interpretations of the classic, created by artists around the world and dating from the 16th Century to modern day. The artwork will remain on display through October 7, and the exhibition is free and open to the public during gallery hours. Pictured at the opening are (l-r) City of Margherita di Savoia (Italy) Mayor Gabriella Carlucci; Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado; Italian Consul General Marco Rocco, and Alessandro Vezzosi, curator and director of the Museo Ideale Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy, the exhibition’s permanent home. Mayors Carlucci and Regalado signed a Collaborative Agreement between the two cities.

elebrating its 25th anniversary, New World School of the Arts (NWSA) will be hosting the first NWSA AllAlumni Reunion on Friday, Oct. 14; Saturday, Oct. 15, and Sunday, Oct. 16. A call has been sent nationally to every high school and college alum who has roamed the halls of New World School of the Arts since its

inception in 1986 to join in this very special action-packed, fun-filled, network-and-reconnect weekend. The three-day event will take place at the NWSAArtseen Gallery and at the NWSA building in downtown Miami as well as several other venues throughout Miami.
