Local angler catches 290-pound swordfish
Perrine Baseball, Softball celebrates Opening Day

he Perrine Baseball and Softball Association conducted its 56th annual Opening Day Parade and Ceremony at Franjo Park on Saturday, Jan. 30. The tradition of parading all the league teams through the Town of Cutler Bay to Franjo Park has been taking place on the last weekend of each January since the league started playing at the park in 1972. More than 500 players with their coaches, parents and friends made the trek this year. The parade was led by a Cutler Bay Police car, MiamiDade Fire Rescue vehicle and the Mays Middle School Marching Band. Once the teams gathered at Franjo Park the ceremony began with a tribute to the military and the National Anthem sung by PBSA 14U player Brian DeJesus. Cutler Bay Mayor Paul Vrooman spoke about

he Town of Cutler Bay will conduct its fourth annual Founder’s Day Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200 St. There will be rides, food, games, entertainment and face painting, all highlighted by the fourth annual Cutler Bay Food Fight. Also scheduled to participate at the

event are the United States Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Police Department Canine Unit. The event’s food and beverage sponsor is Sunstate Bank and the dessert sponsors are Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club and the Whispering Pines Woman’s Club. the new Lakes by the Bay Park which the county recently deeded more than 49 acres to the town. Vrooman mentioned how this new park will help the PBSA expand and double the amount of fields available for the league. Also representing the town were Vice Mayor Ed MacDougall and Councilmember Tim Meerbott. Local high schools also were represented at the ceremony. Ed Doskow, head baseball coach at Miami Southridge, spoke about the importance of staying in school and getting good grades. First year Southridge softball Coach Michelle Ryan was present with her entire 2010 varsity team. Palmetto High School was represented by three former PBSA players — John Keebler, Brian Roach and Mike Cetta. Each year the PBSA awards slected players “Sportsmanship Awards.” These players earned the awards by demonstrating that sportsmanship means more to them than hitting a home run or striking out a batter.
