Founders Day 2010 brings residents out for day of fun
C
BY GARY ALAN RUSE utler Bay’s fourth annual Founders Day Celebration on Feb. 20 had picture-perfect weather and a crowd of about 1,800 people who turned out to enjoy the old-fashioned neighborhood event. Founders Day is the celebration honoring the first official meeting of the town council on Feb. 6, 2006. To celebrate the occasion the town threw a huge party at Cutler Ridge Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring picnic food, local entertainment and displays of animals, police and fire equipment. Diane Kessell sang the National Anthem to start activities, followed by Caribbean music by Panman Steel Drums and jazz by the Robert Morgan Educational Center Orchestra. Then at noon Mayor Paul Vrooman welcomed everyone to the event and introduced the other members of the town council — Vice Mayor Edward MacDougall and Councilmembers Timothy

he Miami-Dade County Commission approved an additional allocation of $344,000 on Mar. 2 for Lakes by the Bay Park for development of interpretive nature trails. The funding for Lakes by the Bay Park was part of a larger package of countywide projects funded by the last allocation from the popular and successful Safe Neighborhood Parks bond referendum originally sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson and passed by the voters in 1996. The bonds have funded $212
million in improvements for parks throughout Miami-Dade. “I am grateful to the Safe Neighborhood Parks oversight board for seeing the value of investing in the educational trails in the nature preserve portion of Lakes by the Bay Park,” Commissioner Sorenson said. “Parks are for everyone and always a worthwhile investment of our community.” Earlier this year, county commissioners passed legislation sponsored by Commissioner Sorenson that transferred 49.3 acres of the Lakes by the Bay Park –––––––––––– See

BY ASRA JAWAID Palmetto Bay Academy (PBA), a private, tuition-based school located just south of The Falls, educates students in grades 8 through 12, from the remedial level all the way to Advanced Placement (AP). What sets PBA apart from other local high schools is that it specializes in students who are above average, even gifted, yet who are not thriving in a traditional school setting. Examples of issues which may have hampered these students’ progress at a traditional school are ADD/ADHD, depression, test/school anxiety, and being in drug or alcohol rehab. Others suffer from dysgraphia (poor handwriting skills) or are considered “gifted LD,” meaning they have a general IQ of 130 or 140, yet are disabled in one particular subject. The PBA school year technically begins in late August and ends in June, but students can enroll year-round, said Lois Dimos, the school’s director. Dimos, who has been in the educational field for more than 30 years and received her master’s degree in education from Stanford University, was inspired to open Palmetto Bay Academy after working as an administrator at a local private school. There she noticed that, although they were smart, certain students weren’t thriving like the others. She noticed that, “the homework was overwhelming [for them], that they couldn’t keep up with the course load, [and] socially they couldn’t fit in.” In response, Lois initially opened a home school for four high school students. Five months later she transformed it into today’s more-polished Palmetto Bay Academy. On paper, the differences between Palmetto Bay Academy and a traditional
school may seem scant, but observing the students at PBA reveals distinct differences in methods of instruction. Rather than being lectured as part of a large class, students almost always are taught one-on-one. They receive guidance, prompting and cheerleading from their teachers, but the students themselves decide what they want to do. “Everything is customized for each student,” said James Dimos, Lois’ husband and the school’s business manager. At the beginning of the school year, students come up with a large group of general goals, as well as shorter-term goals at the beginning of each week, Lois said. Every Friday, they receive progress reports that assess which of the week’s goals have been achieved. The accommodations PBA students receive are abundant: only seven students per classroom; individual tutoring; little or no homework; self-paced instruction, and advice on study skills and organizational strategies. Students have periodic projects and openbook exams, but the exams aren’t timed, and if a student fails, he’ll receive more intensive instruction and an alternative exam. PBA is not a therapeutic school, Lois points out. Seventy five percent of graduates are accepted into four-year universities such as the University of Miami, Emory University, FSU, UCF, FIU, FAU and Barry University. Another 20 percent attend twoyear colleges. The current enrollment at PBA is 15. James serves as a substitute teacher on the rare occasion when one of the four official faculty members is absent. Palmetto Bay Academy is located at 16637 S. Dixie Hwy. For more information or to schedule an appointment for potential enrollment, call 786-293-5353.

Vanessa Derenoncoart assumes the role of executive assistant, running much of the day-to-day operations and other key functions. She’s Neidhart’s “right hand.” “Both of us came in cold,” Neidhart said. “The big push initially was the 12th annual Memorial Golf Tournament, which has taken a lot of our time, but we’ve been trying to make as many meetings as we can since we’re trying to get to know the people in the community a little better. And now we’re going to start pursuing the various economic development issues.” Neidhart said that he is not happy with the turnout for the meetings so far. “I really wish that we could get more people,” Neidhart said. “The meetings are free, unlike some organizations, and I’d like for folks to come and see what we’re doing. We’re making changes to the newsletter, jazzing it up and going twice a month, and Vanessa is doing a great job on that. “We’re improving distribution and we’re going to be including information on the big water and sewer project so people who are affected by it will be able to keep track of that,” he added. “We’re working hard to get good speakers and we hope to not only bring back some of the people who used to attend but also to attract new people who can benefit from what we have to offer.” Neidhart has high praise for Derenoncoart. “She does all of the work,” Neidhart said with a grin. “She’s very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.” Derenoncoart, who has an MBA from Nova Southeastern and did her undergrad work at Barry University, said she genuinely enjoys her job. “What appeals most to me is the opportunity to give back to the community,” Derenoncoart said. “I’ve been a resident of Palmetto Bay for 16 years. I’ve seen the changes from the moment it was incorporated. As a business owner, it means a lot to me being able to help other businesses grow and continue to invest within our community. That definitely drew me in.”
Derenoncoart explained that her background helps her function as a liaison for area business owners, government offices, investors and others in south Florida and beyond. “I work a lot with small businesses,” she said. “I’ve always helped promote small businesses within the county, within the state, different projects, different vendors, so that knowledge of what it takes to help the small business become a larger business or a corporation — that is first and foremost. “Second is my construction lending background. In order to promote a large area like South Dade with our land and the availability of land to grow, you have to have an understanding of how to work with investors and developers.” Derenoncoart said that even with the current economic conditions, you don’t have to look far to see that the area is still growing. “Although the market has taken a downturn, that doesn’t stop construction,” she said. “For example, the School Board Credit Union is going up right behind us. Just in the last month and a half that Paul and I have been here, we’ve received several important phone calls, one from an investor in Boston, a market research company that wanted to get information so that they can construct housing in the Naranja area, which happens to be one of our charrette areas. “They called the EDC and we were able to get them that information. We had another person who called that wanted to put a medical laboratory in the area. We directed him to Cutler Bay, so we’re helping the municipalities; we’re helping to bring business down here. We do our part to follow through so that if we cannot help them, we send them to the correct person or party to help them. It’s all about putting our place on the map.” To learn more about the EDC, which is located at 900 Perrine Ave. in Palmetto Bay, call 305-378-9470 or send an email to <info@edcsouthdade.com>.

FOUNDERS, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Meerbott, Peggy Bell and Ernie Sochin, as well as town manager Steven Alexander. Mayor Vrooman said that the Founders Day Celebration was an important opportunity for residents to have fun, especially in light of recent national and international problems. “An event like this brings us back to our roots,” Vrooman said. “It brings us back to our fundamentals about people getting together in a community and having a good time. We’ve got the Women’s Club that spent all week baking for this event. We’ve got kids from their high school bands here. We’ve got families just out having a good time. “With everything that this country has been through in the last year and a half to two years, or decade, nobody can take this away from us. So we’re going to celebrate that. President Clinton once said that there’s nothing wrong with this country that can’t be cured by what’s right with this country. What you see here is what’s right with this country.” MacDougall agreed with that view and was pleased with the turnout and the level of fun residents were having. “I think it’s a wonderful event,” MacDougall said. “It brings people together. It’s one of the things the whole town needs to make sure its residents are in touch with each other and understand that it’s, as it’s always been, a good neighborhood.” Under the big tent attendees enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken paella, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips and watermelon, with sodas, punch, lemonade and water to drink. For dessert literally thousands of cookies, cupcakes, brownies and other sweet treats were provided by the Whispering Pines Woman’s Club and the
Cutler Ridge Women’s Club. Ongoing entertainment included the rock band “Medallust,” a Karoake contest, the Mocko Jumbie Stilt Walkers, a rock climbing wall, bounce house, super slide, video game arcade and face painting. Hot air balloon rides were planned for the first time, but windy weather conditions made that impossible. Public Works director Ralph Casals and staff members handed out “Green Bags” to everyone to commemorate Cutler Bay’s Silver certification in the LEED program by the U.S. Green Building Council. Parks and Recreation director Alan Ricke commented on the new arrangement of the food, entertainment and display booths this year. “We decided to switch things around this time because we wanted people to get acquainted with the new soccer field,” Ricke said. “Also, we wanted to use the new pavilion building for the food. It all worked out pretty well.” As usual the big event concluded with the infamous Town Council Pie Auction, in which anyone could place a bid to hit the official of his or her choice with a pie in the face. But in a new twist, an alternate form of public humiliation was offered in which the official could choose to sing the auction winner’s favorite song in lieu of taking a pie hit. MacDougall, Meerbott and Sochin went for the Karoake option, but Vrooman and Bell good-naturedly accepted pies in the face. “I love our residents too much to inflict my singing on them,” Vrooman explained. The annual Food Fight wrapped things up as those residents who dared participated with messy but gleeful enthusiasm.
IMPROVEMENTS, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– property to the Town of Cutler Bay and associated funding for a long-awaited local recreational park for residents. The county will retain the remaining 55.24 acres of natural preserve area. The additional $344,000 will go toward nature trail development in the preserve. Commissioner Sorenson has worked for the past 15 years to secure funding for the park and to resolve environmental issues that have stymied its progress. “This will be a great park for everyone,” Commissioner Sorenson said. “I will continue to work closely with Cutler Bay officials to ensure that Lakes by the Bay offers various activities while preserving the natural surroundings.” The county received 73.11 acres of land from the developer of Lakes by the Bay for
a community park in 1991. Approximately 20 additional acres were purchased by the county in 1998 to expand the park and buffer environmentally endangered lands. This acreage included lake bottoms, which the county intended to use for boating and fishing. By 1999, additional land transferred from the Solid Waste Department formed the 95.2-acre Lakes by the Bay Park, which the county planned to use for playing fields, aquatic activities, picnicking, natural trails, nature/recreation center, and a gateway into the adjacent Biscayne Coastal Wetland properties. When the Town of Cutler Bay was incorporated six years later, some of the land was included within the municipality. For information, contact Commissioner Sorenson’s office at 305-378-6677.

AROUND TOWN Well, folks, Cutler Bay had its annual Founders Day event again, and it’s hard to beat that kind of old fashioned small town neighborhood picnic. The food, both the catered and the delectable home-made goodies, was great. The live music by student bands was great. The relaxed family fun atmosphere was great, and the politicians were avoiding speeches and doing what they do best, connecting with their fellow residents on a one to one basis. What’s not to like? With all the things folks have to worry about these days, it was a breath of fresh air and a chance to unwind. Everyone who worked on the event, from town staffers to volunteers, deserves a round of applause. Seriously. Congress: For the people or for political parties? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY I have been following Washington, DC, politics for many years. Never have I seen our elected officials more concerned about the preservation of their political parties or for the preservation of their “careers,” than we are experiencing with the current bunch of elected officials in Washington. It is pathetic! Members of Congress are of the opinion that we have sent them to Washington so that they might have a high-paying job, unbelievably good health insurance and a guaranteed pension that puts our Social Security to shame. No, Mr. or Ms. Elected Official, we elected you to represent us, to run our country in our best interest while we go about our lives earning a living, raising our children and looking forward to a secure retirement. If we elected our officials solely to guarantee them that they might have a secure job we would elect
ourselves to the position. The average elected official in Washington would vote for the devil if he or she thought it would preserve their political party — be they Democrat or Republican. They do not see that that we, the voters, recognize the self-interest that abides in the halls of Congress. The problem is that our disgust for the actions of our elected officials seems to disappear when we vote. Only 36 percent of the surveyed voters are happy with the actions of our current Congress. If this anger was carried into the voting booth we would replace most elected officials in Congress. Two things keep them at their jobs. First, the amount of dollars thrown into the typical election campaign masks the flaws of the candidate and shows only the side they wish us to see. Second, the prevailing feeling is that the “next” elected official won’t be any better than the one we are replacing. We dumbly go to the polls and return them to office. When Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts died and the state elected a Republican to fill the seat held by a Democrat for 47 years, the whole political system in Washington seemed to fall apart. The Democratic hold on the Senate and the
–– VIEWPOINT –– ability to prevent a filibuster disappeared. Conservative Democrats realized that they now had an opportunity to speak out as their votes are needed even more by the White House. Liberal-leaning Republicans realized that they could cross party lines on a specific issue and still remain a Republican. Newly elected Sen. Scott Brown, Kennedy’s replacement, seems to vote with logic rather than strictly along party lines when he recently voted for the Jobs Bill, a strongly supported Democratic issue. We need more men and women who put our country first to break this unbelievable allegiance to their political party. It is amazing that our elected officials don’t see that we, the voters, identify loyalty to country over loyalty to the political party when it is displayed by an elected official. You think they would want to emulate,
rather than convert, back to the party line. Our nation is deeply in debt. We are fighting endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 40-plus million Americans are without healthcare. Unemployment is over 10 percent; the man on the street feels that his children’s future will not be as good as his. This is deplorable. We are losing faith in the system. It is time for selfinterest to leave the minds of our Congress and work toward a bi-partisan solution to the problems facing our nation.

Whispering Pines Elementary School conducted a “heart felt” fundraiser drive the week of Jan. 25 for Forgotten Soldiers Outreach Inc. (www.forgottensoldiers.org). A check exceeding $1,800 was presented to Cutler Bay resident Lynelle Chauncey Zelnar, executive director and founder of Forgotten Soldiers Outreach Inc., along with a major collection of donated items and hundreds of Valentine’s to all be included in FSO’s Valentine’s Day/February “We Care” Packages. The funds collected help towards the shipping of some 500 Care packages. The students raised these funds in one week via a coin drive project, collection of items and Valentine Cards for the project they called, “WPE Has a HEART for the U.S. Troops.” Each class participated in collecting coins. On Monday, Jan. 25, students donated pennies; Tuesday, nickels; Wednesday, dimes; Thursday, quarters, and Friday, dollars. The PTA kept track of the coins donated and updated the school on the morning announcements as to the contributions. There was competition between grade levels and classes, in which the winning participants (grade and classes) will be the recipients of a pizza party and ice cream party, partly sponsored by FSO and the PTA. Soldiers will assist in serving the pizza and ice cream later this month. “Whispering Pines participation in the WPE has a HEART program; (Hope, Encouragement And Remembering Troops) benefiting the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach (FSO) was very rewarding and a great way for us to show our support,” said Nicole
Barczak, PTA vice president. “I am very proud to be a part of a school whose outstanding amount of donations will provide several soldiers with a little bit more hope and encouragement. Our school’s involvement will hopefully set an example for other schools in our community to do the same,” she added. “What an honor to be the recipient charity of such a creative and successful fundraising drive,” Zelnar said. “FSO is thrilled by the results and compassion from these students. These students ‘truly get it’ and realize how important it is this day and age to send ‘a little bit of home’ to our troops who are putting their lives in harm’s way to protect all of us. “What an incredible example this sets to others. These children are our future, we are extremely proud of them,” she added. “It is our hope that the students and families of Whispering Pines Elementary will set the precedents for other schools throughout the county.” The moneys couldn’t come in at a better time, especially when the economy is taking such a hard hit, and when more deployments of military personnel are occurring, including to Haiti, Zelnar said. “Many of our troops now on their fifth and sixth deployment and actually registering themselves to become a monthly recipient of FSO. We are so grateful to these students, the PTA and Whispering Pines Elementary School in assisting FSO to assure that our troops are not forgotten,” Zelnar added. E-Brief News Cutler Bay Acquires Lakes by the Bay Park On January 21, 2010 the Miami-Dade County Commission conveyed Lakes by the Bay Park to the Town of Cutler Bay. Lakes by the Bay Park is a 49 acre park located east of SW 87th Avenue and north of SW 216th Street. It took almost 30 years for this park to become a reality for the local community. In 1972, Lennar Homes dedicated this area for a community park. Councilmember Bell, Mayor Vrooman, and Town Manager Steven Alexander through hard work and perseverance, many Council workshops and meetings with Commissioner Sorenson and other County staff members were able to secure an agreement for the Town to finally acquire the park. The Town will also receive $8.6 million to develop Lakes by the Bay Park and it is forecasted to be completed in two years. 2010 US Census – “It’s In Our Hands” The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for things like, hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, public works projects, and emergency services. The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. In March of 2010, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. If you don't mail the form back, you may receive a visit from a census taker, who will ask you the questions from the form. Walter’s Coffee Shop combines nostalgia, Southern style delights BY NANCY EAGLETON
For a taste of nostalgia and delicious homemade Southern-style diner delights, take a drive to Palmetto Bay to meet your family and neighbors at Walter’s Coffee Shop. The beloved eatery has been feeding the souls of its patrons with good old-fashioned hospitality and satisfying appetites with home-cooked breakfast and lunch fare for more than 30 years. Walter and Jo Bergamo opened their first Walter’s Coffee Shop in New York in 1965. In 1976, Walter and Jo left the hustle and bustle of New York and moved to Miami to “retire.” Retirement did not sit well with Walter and within a year, he was bored. In 1977, he re-opened his Walter’s Coffee Shop concept in his new hometown (then known as Perrine). Walter coined the phrase “where the elite meet to eat” to describe his diner because he loved this community and believed that each person who came in to his establishment was extraordinary and had their own elite qualities to offer. Walter felt that he was not only in the business of serving up a great meal to his patrons; he was in the business of bringing people in the community together. Walter and Jo had two daughters, Grace and Vicki. Today, Walter’s Coffee Shop is owned and operated by Grace and her husband, Lenny Berbrick, who took over the restaurant in 1994, when Walter and Jo did “officially” retire. Although Jo passed away in 2000 and Walter in 2002, their photo is featured in the shop to remind family, friends and employees, that life is good. “We have many people who come in that knew my parents very well,” Grace said. “Now, we have a second generation within these families coming through these doors.” There’s something for everyone on
Grace and Lenny Berbrick, owners of Walter’s Coffee Shop, invite you to stop by for a tasty meal with your friends.
Walter’s menu. Customers can’t get enough of the famous corned beef hash, grits, omelets, pancakes or meatloaf. Order a burger with fries or country fried steak with mashed potatoes, paired with a glass of freshly brewed sweet tea or a creamy milkshake for a tasty lunch. On the lighter side, try one of the new wraps or a freshly made salad. “We make homemade pies everyday,” Grace said. “Coconut cream pie is a customer favorite.” The more things change, the more they stay the same. Walter’s Coffee Shop always has been about family and friends gathering for a good meal. It’s a comfortable and
homey place where Lenny and Grace, the waitresses and the cooks all know your name. The shop has a NASCAR theme, so Lenny can share his passion with all his friends. And finally, a photo of Lenny and Grace’s two sons, Walter and Adam, is hung proudly on the wall for all to see. “We’re so proud of our sons. Walter is in the Navy and is stationed in Rhode Island and Adam is a Marine stationed in Virginia,” Grace said. Lenny and Grace are happy to announce to all their patrons and the community that they are soon to be grandparents. Adam and his wife, Dana, are having their first baby due in April. For the many fans of Walter’s Coffee Shop, T-shirts and caps with the checkered flag design are now being sold and gift certificates are available to share with friends. Walter’s Coffee Shop is located at 17009 South Dixie Hwy. in Palmetto Bay. The shop is open Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Saturday, 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and breakfast is served until noon each day. I am asked this question everyday. Not everyone is going to have the same alternatives. However, understanding your options is the first step to saving your home and your sanity. Is a Loan Modification for me? The Making Homes Affordable Plan is President Obama’s loan modification plan that helps homeowners who are struggling to make their monthly mortgage payment stay in their homes. This plan requires lenders to reduce monthly payments to no more than 31 percent of the homeowner’s monthly income. The first step in this plan is to lower the interest rate of the loan—sometimes as low as 2%. Second, if the mortgage payment is still too high with the reduced interest, then the loan may be extended to a 40 year term. Third, if the monthly payment is still not affordable, then there may be a reduction of the principal of the loan. Is a loan modification what you need? It is if you want to keep your home. I see loan modifications being given every day, allowing homeowners to stay in the home they have worked so hard to keep. Why do I need to defend my foreclo sure with an attor ney? Once you are given a complaint to foreclose, take that complaint to an attorney so legal responses can be given to the complaint. The response should be specific to each point/count made in the complaint; and affirmative defenses should be formulated for your individual case. The attorney you hire should know foreclosure law, mortgage law and how to properly prepare and answer the foreclosure complaint. If you fail to answer appropriately you risk your right to bring any affirmative defenses against the lender. Do you need to defend against a foreclosure? If you want to save your home and your credit, the answer is yes. Even if you are working on a loan modification, are in the middle of a short sale,
or simply want to avoid foreclosure on your credit you must take legal action to prevent the foreclosure process. uld I aggreee to a shorr t saalee and leavee Shou me? my hom If you want to throw the towel in or you do not qualify for a loan modification, then a short sale is a good option. A short sale is when a lender accepts less than what you owe on the property and agrees to the sale of your home. With a short sale, you need to find a realtor experienced in short sales; and an attorney who can properly negotiate the short sale with your lender. The short-sale process is similar to a loan modification and must be properly executed so as not to delay the closing and ultimately lose the interested buyer. Should I file Bankr uptcy? If so, when and which Chapter should I file? Bankruptcy is a perfectly legitimate way to stop foreclosure, put an end to lawsuits, protect paychecks from garnishment, and regain control of your financial situation. However, this should be your final option after having tried reaching a loan modification, you have defended your foreclosure with a real estate attorney and time is ticking towards the foreclosure sale date of your house. In the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy there is no loan modification option and if you stop paying your mortgage you could lose your home. In the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy you can save your house and you are given time to pay off your debt. Do not lose hope. Changes and new programs are being offered to help homeowners every day. Even though this is a time of great challenge, do not forget the true meaning of life—the love of your family, the beautiful children you may have and the beautiful place you live in. Fight for what you want, exercise, regularly, read happy books, and watch the program Funniest Home Videos. Soon you’ll be smiling again!

What can be done about those pesky tree roots that grow above ground? Roots belong underground, right? Most of the time, yes. And most of the time, if a plant’s roots are exposed to light, they’ll grow away from it and go back into the ground or mulch to protect themselves from that light. So why do some tree roots grow at or above the soil surface where they can trip people, mess up equipment, buckle sidewalks and driveways, look out-of-place and unattractive, and generally drive homeowners and grounds managers to cover, smother or chop them? The thing is, roots are opportunistic – growing wherever they find soil with adequate space, oxygen, water and nutrients. If they hit something they can’t penetrate, like the “coral” rock bed of South Florida they will be deflected and grow in the first 6 to 12 inches of available top soil. That’s how roots of many trees here in Miami end up growing on the surface. So what to do about above-ground roots? The first thing to remember is that the root system of the tree is its source of

nutrition and provides support for the tree. Simply hacking away at the offending above-ground roots can kill the tree or cause the tree to actually fall over causing major damage. A quick fix is to add a layer of top soil and then mulch the area to level it out. Or, instead of fighting the tree’s above-ground growth, utilize the roots as an interesting landscape feature by planting flowering shrubs among the roots. If the tree roots are causing problems and need to be removed, you should contact a certified arborist. This professional can selectively remove offending roots. An arborist will be sure to maintain the trees nutrition needs and anchoring root system for safety of the tree’s growth.

Smile... At Galloway Dental Care, your consult is free Service with a smile. Dr. Rafael J. Valdes of Galloway Dental Care and his team offer patients the most advanced dental, orthodontic and periodontal treatments available in a comfortable, state of the art facility. BY NANCY EAGLETON To help you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile, Dr. Rafael J. Valdes of Galloway Dental Care is offering new patients a free dental and orthodontic consultation. A stunning smile is often the first thing people notice and Dr. Valdes has been helping patients of all ages to feel proud of their smiles for more than 21 years. At Galloway Dental Care, next to Norman Brothers on Galloway Avenue, the services Dr. Valdes offers his patients cover the entire dental spectrum, including general, family, and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and Invisalign®, periodontics, oral surgery and full mouth rehabilitation. “We offer all dental specialties under one roof. It’s ideal for busy families because each family member has very different dental needs at different times,” said Dr. Valdes. “Most importantly, by specializing in all facets of dentistry, we’re able to achieve the best results for the patient.” Dr. Valdes revealed that many of the procedures that enhance a person’s smile and appearance also ultimately enhance their total health and well being. The outcome of fixed orthodontics and Invisalign® is beautiful, straight teeth. Equally important to patients are the health benefits after solving the issue of overcrowding teeth, which include less chance of tooth decay, cavities, periodontal disease and bone loss. “Overcrowding causes many problems. For children, it may cause decay and cavities. For adults, it ultimately results in thinning bone,” said Dr. Valdes. “Orthodontics also resolves bite issues. I’ve had patients who experienced severe headaches as a result of their misaligned bite. After going through Invisalign®, their headaches were gone.” Orthodontic treatments are definitely not just for kids anymore. “I see and treat a lot of people who have had relapse. In other words, they’ve had straight teeth all of their life or once wore braces, but as they’ve aged, the teeth have started to shift toward the mid-line,” explained Dr. Valdes. “Many of these patients are excellent candidates for Invisalign®. The technology of this treatment has come a long way during the past few years and the procedure can be used to solve almost any orthodontic case.” Besides orthodontic treatments for both children and adults, general and family dentistry services at Galloway Dental Care include check-ups, teeth cleaning and fluoride treatments, cavity fillings, root canal and teeth extraction. Cosmetic and restorative dentistry services include professional teeth whitening, crowns and bridges, porcelain veneers, implants or a combination of all these treatments, which is called full mouth rehabilitation. Periodontal treatments, TMJ therapy, snoring and grinding appliances are also available to help patients achieve the best oral health. Dr. Valdes performs implant dentistry, which is a good choice for people with missing teeth or those who have a partial or full denture. Implants look, act and function like natural teeth and help maintain crucial bone mass. “Dental implants can be life changing for patients. It enhances appearance, comfort, speech and the ability to chew and enjoy food,” said Dr. Valdes. “When people can’t chew their food properly, it leads to other health issues, including gastrointestinal problems.” Porcelain veneers can transform a smile, and yet look totally natural. For patients with thin, broken, chipped, crooked, stained or spaced teeth, porcelain veneers are custom made to fit and are precisely bonded over existing teeth. “Veneers also help to protect the integrity of a damaged tooth from further breakage,” said Dr. Valdes. “It’s important to keep that tooth and root intact.” Dr. Valdes and his professional team know that their patients’ time is very valuable so they work very hard to be sure that clients are not left waiting for their appointment. To provide the very best comfort and oral health care, Galloway Dental Care uses all of today’s most advanced technology and equipment in a modern, yet warm and laid back setting. Galloway Dental Care is located at 7755 S.W. 87th Avenue, suite 100, right next to Norman Brothers. To schedule an appointment for your free consultation, call 305-595-1774 and mention this story. 1800s bigamy trial inspires Florida author’s first book BY KATIE RUDKIN
Florida author Johanna Moran made her literary debut in February with The Wives of Henry Oades (A Ballantine Trade Paperback Original). More than 50 years ago, Moran’s father, a law student, came across an abstract about the case of Henry Oades, a man who faced persecution for bigamy in San Francisco in the late 1800s. The story fascinated two generations — her father and mother, and now Moran. She used it to inspire her novel, an unforgettable page-turning drama that explores the intricacies of marriage, the construction of family, the changing world of the late 1800s, and the strength of two remarkable women. As the novel opens, Henry Oades accepts an accountancy post in New Zealand and subsequently moves his wife, Margaret, and their children to exotic Wellington. Their new home is rougher and more rustic than they expected — and then a single night of tragedy shatters the family when the native Maori stage an uprising, kidnapping Margaret and her children. For months Henry scours the surrounding wilderness, until all hope is lost and his wife and children are presumed dead. Grief-stricken, he books passage to California. There he marries Nancy Foreland, a young widow with a new baby, and it seems they’ve both found happiness in the midst of their mourning — until Henry’s first wife and children show up, alive and having finally escaped captivity. Now, Henry has to make the most difficult of decisions and his actions will stir a community, cause emotions to flair and result in a stunning trial. Sparking provocative discussion about

the nature of the family, The Wives of Henry Oades heralds the arrival of Moran as a stunning new voice in contemporary fiction. Johanna Moran comes from a long line of writers and lawyers. A former flight attendant, she now lives in Sarasota with her husband and writes full time. Find out more about her at <www.johannamoran.com>. Curves of Miami to host food drive benefiting local families BY ROBERT HAMILTON
Curves of Miami is encouraging women in the area to show their philanthropic strength by participating in the annual Curves Food Drive. And, even though donating food to families in need is its own reward, the club is offering compelling incentives for both existing and potential members who participate. Now through Mar. 31, Curves of Miami is collecting non-perishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the local area. The goal, according to Jeannie Borsanyi of Curves of Miami, is for the community to come together to help families in need. “At the core of our business is the message that women are stronger when they rally together, and that is the point we hope to bring home with our food drive, Borsanyi said. “We want to show our community just how powerful the generosity of our members can be. Borsanyi said members who donate a bag of groceries or make a minimum donation of
$30 during the month of March will receive a reusable Curves grocery freezer bag for free. Non-members who do likewise between Mar. 8 and 20 can join Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join. Borsanyi said that as part of this effort, Curves of Miami will be participating in a company-wide contest for the most food drive donations collected by Curves locations across the nation. Winners will receive one of several cash prizes to be donated to their local food bank. Each year, Curves locations collectively donate millions of pounds of food to feed the hungry. “We hope women in the Miami area will come together and participate in this initiative, Borsanyi added. “Even if you’re not thinking about joining a gym, you can still drop off your donations. There are so many families right here in our own community who need our help. For more information about Curves of Miami, located at 7120 SW 40 St., and the Curves Food Drive, contact Jeannie Borsanyi at 305-661-1288 or by email at <97PHS6U9@curvesmail.com>.

Nissan Altima Coupe a ‘darling’ of youth market Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Nissan Altima Coupe has been a hit with U.S. consumers since it was introduced three years ago. Its sporty styling, jackrabbit power and exceptional handling have made it especially popular with younger consumers who really have no need for four doors on a car and a roomy back seat. For 2010, the Altima Coupe gets new exterior styling, three new exterior colors, refined interior fabrics, a new available red leather-appointed interior color and revised option package content. The Coupe is available in four levels — a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine and an equipped 2.5 S; a 3.5-liter V-6 engine (18/27), and an equipped 3.5 SR. Each level is offered with a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The Coupe’s styling changes include a
revised hood, grille and front bumper, along with new projector beam headlights and standard 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Altima 3.5 SR models have standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with Michelin P235/45R18 tires. The Coupe’s exterior design definitely stands out from other cars in its class. It is nicely proportioned and has a sensual, flowing design, with a shorter wheelbase, shorter overall length and lower height than its sibling Sedan. It’s smaller and lighter overall, which gives it a sportier driving feel, an important element for the more performance-oriented and youthful coupe buyers. The front-wheel drive Altima Coupe rides on Nissan’s advanced D platform and has a 105.3-inch wheelbase, four inches shorter than the Sedan. Overall length is 180.9 inches — 10 inches less than the Sedan — and it has a two-inch lower profile at 55.9 inches. The two cars share only a common hood, with all other panels, grille, headlights and rear combination lights unique to the Coupe. Twin chrome exhaust tips with unique taillights distinctively mark the rear. Inside, the 2010 Altima Coupe has revised interior fabrics and finishers, a new

red leather-appointed interior color and a revised blonde color choice. The gauge appearance has been changed to incorporate a new white illumination and the automatic transmission finisher has a revised design. The Coupe also includes a 60/40 split and flat fold-down rear seat. The instrument panel features a Fine Vision gauge display for better readability and the L-shaped flow of the instrument panel to the center console adds to the driver-oriented cockpit. The center console includes a

Some Things Are Worth Repeating Upscale consignment is the perfect way to recycle items of value within the community. Consignors, whether they have one item or an entire estate, love the effortless and private selling approach. Buyers revel in unique finds at affordable prices, an opportunity to own quality and style without the heavy price tag. And as expected, the line between consignors and shoppers disappears, as one delightedly becomes the other. The fun and excitement of consignment shopping is irresistible!
