Town, school district team up to create soccer field T BY GARY ALAN RUSE

he Town of Cutler Bay and the Miami-Dade County School District have teamed up to build a soccer field and walkway for the community in a practical way that also reduces costs. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place on Monday, Mar. 30, at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200 St., with town and school officials participating. The field, which will include a new natural grass surface, new irrigation system and lighting for nighttime play, is located between the park and Cutler Ridge Elementary School on school property. As part of a 25-year lease agreement with Miami-Dade County Public Schools allowing the town to use the field, the school will have use of the field during school hours, and the park will have Representatives of the town council, school officials and students dig in for the soccer field access during non-school hours, week- groundbreaking ceremony at Cutler Ridge Park. Cutler Bay Mayor Paul Vrooman was pleased with the cooperation that went into the soccer field and walkway project. “It’s a very good example of two local governments working together,” Vrooman said. “This land is not being used by the school board on a daily basis and we need more land for our soccer program, so it’s a way we can come ing cities are reexamining the way BY SANDRA CUERVO together in a joint partnership and development occurs. BY NUSLY BARAHONA-ALEA he Miami-Dade County Commission on Apr. 7 passed an ordinance making the current landscape irrigation restriction permanent in the county. The policy continues the landscape irrigation restrictions imposed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in April 2007. “We have had these restrictions in place for the past two years and the citizens of Miami-Dade County know the rules,” said District 13 Commissioner Natacha Seijas, sponsor of the ordinance. “Making the restrictions permanent does not change a thing. CUTLER BAY COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT - By Erin O’Donnell, Assistant to the Town Clerk This new feature in our E-Brief highlights special individuals or groups who make an impression in our Town. Whether it is through the Arts, community service, or just an extraordinary individual to honor, we highlight them here: Brian Trainor is a Cutler Bay resident and our current resident artist, with plenty of photography on display in Town Hall. Although he’s been producing artwork and photography for 30 years, he’s been displaying work professionally at local art shows for the past 2 years; and has acquired several awards along the way. His photography is comprised of everyday material from nature to office supplies, although the final result is completely non-traditional. All objects are manipulated by alternative lighting, lenses, and angles, but are untouched by the tools in Photoshop. By grasping people’s curiosity in common items, Mr. Trainor has been able to arouse interest in the Arts every time he produces a new piece. For further information, sample gallery photos, and upcoming art venues, view his website at: www.briantrainorphotography.com. Do you know someone who would like to be featured in the Cutler Bay Community Spotlight? Please contact Erin O’Donnell at 305-234-4262 or email at eo’donnell@cutlerbay-fl.gov.

TOWN OF CUTLER BAY - US-1 CHARRETTE April 18, 2009 • 10am to 2pm • South Dade Regional Library. 2nd floor, 10750 SW 211th Street, Cutler Bay In urban planning, the word “charrette” has become a technique for consulting with all stakeholders, typically involving municipal officials, developers and residents. A successful charrette promotes joint ownership of solutions and a chance to create a plan that represents a detailed, feasible agreement - a consensus which can otherwise take months to achieve. The Town of Cutler Bay invites residents, business owners, developers and interested citizens to participate in the planning process for the revitalization along the US-1 corridor. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. Please bring your ideas for improving the US-1 corridor. Call David Hennis, AICP, Community Development Director, at 305-234-4262, with questions and for more information.

BY CATHY FERREIRA The Deering Estate at Cutler and the GroveHouse Artists will host “Affair En Plein Air,” a two-day outdoor painting event, on Apr. 18 and 19. Artists will be painting on the grounds of the estate on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The completed artwork will be juried by Marcelle Zanetti on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Royal Palm Grove at the Deering Estate. The winners will exhibit their work as part of the 2009 GroveHouse Artists Spring Art Exhibit to take place in the Richmond Cottage from May 15 to June 13. Prizes will be awarded at the exhibit’s opening on May 21. As an avid art collector, philanthro-

pist, and amateur artist, Charles Deering sought to support artists and the creation of fine art. His tradition and innovative spirit continues on the estate today through a variety of art programs — the estate’s Permanent Collection, Art on Loan Program (semipermanent and temporary exhibits), Artist Village (located in the historic outbuildings), Artist in Residence Program, and Creative Art Camps. The show is free with regular admission to the estate: adults, $10, and children (ages 4-14), $5. The Deering Estate at Cutler, a Miami-Dade County Park, is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. For more information on the Deering Estate’s educational and cultural programs, visit online at <www.deeringestate.org>.

When you have good relationships like this, anything can happen.” Part of an overall Cutler Ridge Park Improvements Project, there also will be pool improvements and the installation of a new pavilion. Some improvements already have been completed. Light Structure “Green” technology will be used in the soccer field lighting, and will use fewer light fixtures to produce the same amount of light, which reduces kilowatt hour costs to operate the lights. The new technology lights also last longer than the old style, so the lamps will not need to be replaced as often. Ariel Guitian of Recreational Design and Construction Inc. was at the ceremony because his firm will be building the facility as well as making improvements to existing park structures. “There’ll be sports lighting, Bermuda grass, and a five-foot concrete sidewalk for exercising that connects the west side of the park to the east side of the

park and wraps around the soccer field,” Guitian said. “We’ll also be adding a lifeguard station next to the pool.” Good news for taxpayers is that funding for this project came from several grants and improvement programs including the Safe Neighborhoods Parks Grant Program, Quality Neighborhood Improvements Program, United States Soccer Foundation Field Enhancement Grant Program, as well as from Town of Cutler Bay contingency funds. Councilmember Peggy Bell, serving as the liaison for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, was happy to see the project officially begin. “We’ve been working on this for two years — the committee has — and this is just a wonderful day for those of us who’ve lived here for many years and have been waiting for more park space, more land,” Bell said. “This agreement with the school, through this collaboration, I believe, is what a small town is all about. “We can contribute to the school by keeping their field in good shape and they’re allowing us to use it after hours and weekends. The principal is wonderful, our school representative is wonderful, and we are fortunate to be here today.”

We are saving almost 40 million gallons a day because of water conservation policies and practices.” Highlights of the ordinance include: A continuation of current policy which says landscape irrigation is allowed from midnight to 10 a.m., and from 4 p.m. to midnight on days corresponding to property addresses, as follows: • Even-numbered addresses (ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8) on Thursdays and Sundays, and

Hey, hey — Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration is on?Saturday, April 25th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Saga Bay Park, SW 79th Court & SW 205 Street. Palmetto Bay Mayor Gene Flinn can bowl! He recently participated in the “King Pins Challenge” at Splitsville Luxury Lanes in South Miami with many other elected officials and civic and business leaders for the first annual event, benefiting Informed Families / South Miami Drug-Free Coalition. Also there were State Representative Julio Robaina, South Miami Mayhor Horace Feliu and Chamber South President Mary Scott Russell, as well as others. And you thought you were bugged before… Village of Palmetto Bay is once again hosting Earth Week starting April 18 with a kayak and canoe tour along the Village shoreline, and concluding with a bike ride along historic Old Culter Road and through the Deering Estate on April 25. This second annual celebration offers a wide range of activities — including the release of more than 15,000 lady bugs this year at local schools, a community cleanup, and a Movie Night showing

of “Bee Movie” at Coral Reef Park. First celebrated in January 1970, Earth Day is intended to inspire worldwide awareness of and appreciation for our environment. Please check the Village website for details. In Kendall, Continental Park residents continue to be plagued by burglaries, including a SW 90th Terrace resident reporting “it took ten minutes to take all my jewelry and goods...there (were) no marks on my sliding door; even the police couldn’t figure it out, and they pulled the lock out completely with no marks!!” Thieves entered the home by jumping a five-foot iron fence, breaking a slide door lock, and leaving thru the front door. Not far away, a robbery-revisited SW 93rd Street, a resident reporting “the last time they took off the four wheels from a SUV. This time they broke into the house through a bedroom window that was closed, but not properly latched, and left the same way. In apparently a few minutes they took off with jewelry, keys and everything they found in top drawers. Times are hard and people are desperate.” Advice from police and neighbors: Make sure ALL doors and windows are properly locked! Keep an eye out for anyone who looks like they don’t belong in your neighborhood. (Maj. Edward Herrera of Kendall District constantly advises that police be called quickly upon sighting suspicious individuals). Seaport tunnel plan needs a second look R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY A billion dollars is a lot of money. That’s the projected cost of the tunnel to the Port of Miami. However, almost without exception, a billion dollar government capital project eventually will cost at least $1.5 billion. Just look at the history of the Miami International Airport expansion and the cost of the Performing Arts Center. So we must be very careful in evaluating the benefits versus the cost of the proposed seaport tunnel. The Port of Miami has been losing cargo traffic to Port Everglades in Broward County. Published traffic counts found on the Internet show Miami has lost 24 percent of its container business in the past four years. The big question is will a $1.5 billion tunnel keep Miami from losing further business? Will it regain some of the lost traf-

fic? Miami’s seaport employs, directly and indirectly, some 176,000 workers. So, anything that can reverse the loss of traffic would make a lot of sense. Right now, driving a truck off the port, crossing Biscayne Boulevard (US1), and winding through back streets onto the interstate is a major problem. When the thousands of condo units currently under construction around the AmericanAirlines Arena are occupied, the problem will get even worse. I have talked to several trucking companies, asking them if they believed a tunnel would solve the problem and most agree that it would go a long way in ending the bottleneck they experience every time they try to drive off the island. Asked if they felt that there was another solution, I am told that a “truck only” route off the island across Biscayne Boulevard and onto Interstate 95 would be a far less costly and would resolve the problem in far less time. One trucking company exec told me that Port Everglades is far easier to enter and exit. Interstate 595 terminates in the east at the entrance to the port. There is virtually no competition

VIEWPOINT from auto traffic except for those cars going to the airport. Port Everglades has another advantage — it is closer to the rest of the state. Time saved is at least one hour’s drive. It also was pointed out that if state, county and federal money isn’t available to fund the project, the state may turn to a revenue bond to build the tunnel. The problem is that unlike the $5 or $6 as originally anticipated, it would now require at minimum a $20 toll to retire a revenue bond issue. Twenty dollars plus the extra hour’s drive on Interstate 95 going north might make shippers and truckers think twice about staying in the Port of Miami. Port Everglades looks far more attractive. Except for trucks crossing Biscayne Boulevard, it would be relatively easy, and quick, to dedicate an east-west street as a truck-only route. It was sug-

gested that a truck-only ramp onto I-95 would make accessing the expressway north as the best way to get out of town — and I am sure that the whole project could be accomplished for far less than $1.5 billion. I don’t know if this is the answer. But it is a question that should be asked before we go too much farther in planning the tunnel project. As one trucker pointed out to me, “I’d rather see the bucks spent on education than on a tunnel.” A lot of Miamians are expressing the same thoughts.

Get on the right track by thinking out of the box BY ERNIE SOCHIN Councilmember Thinking out of the box — that is what all of the business experts say we are supposed to do to be really successful. Cutler Bay has at least one resident who did just that, although he can no longer use the expression “Never Stole a Freight Train” because he actually did. Well he didn’t steal the entire train, just the engine. He took it for a little ride down to Homestead to have a few drinks. If it wasn’t so illegal, I would like to do something like that myself. Sounds like fun and definitely thinking outside the box. Perhaps one day I may take a Boeing 747 for a jaunt. You will read about it in the Cutler Bay News. Now I am thinking outside the box in my career aspirations. I am sending my rather short resume to AIG insurance company and may need some letters of recommendation from my readers. I am proposing that they offer me one million dollars to not go to work for their company. Think of the savings to AIG. They would never have to pay me a retention bonus or even

offer a severance package. They would save money on electricity, office space, travel expense, computers, coffee and all the other things that they offer. I would cover my own medical expenses and contribute to my own 101K Plan. They would not be bothered by my emails nor would they have to send me any. To me it would seem like a win-win for the company. I wouldn’t be able to screw up anything like their existing employees because I wouldn’t be doing anything. A savings right there. I am sure the U.S. Government would approve of my plan because of the savings involved. Of course I would have to sign a contract promising never to go to work for AIG. Hey, I have to give on some points. If this works out for them, they could consider doing it with others. Maybe some of the other banks and mortgage companies would offer me the same package… then they might all be successful. I really need your help on this one so send your letters of recommendation care of this newspaper along with any cash contributions you wish to make to my 101K plan. I can really use it.

Editor’s note: Please don’t send letters or cash to this newspaper. Maybe you can try Cutler Bay Town Hall.

Two Jewish congregations to merge, create one home BY DANI EINSOHN Congregation Bet Breira and Temple Samu-El Or Olom have agreed to merge the Reform and Conservative congregations into a single temple family, creating what will be South Florida’s first and only inter-denominational Jewish congregation. Members of both organizations voted by an overwhelming majority to proceed with the merger, which is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, and will take effect July 1. The name Bet Breira Or Olom is being considered for the new congregation. A blending of both temples’ names, its Hebrew translation means, “House of Choice, Light of the World.” Housed in Congregation Bet Breira’s current home at 9400 SW 87 Ave. in Kendall, the merged congregation will hold membership in both the Union for Reform Judaism and the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, offering a true “House of Choice” for both Reform and Conservative Jews. Each temple’s rabbi and cantor will continue to serve the new congregation. “It is exciting to be a part of this new model of synagogue,” said Bet Breira’s Rabbi Jaime Aklepi. “The goal is to create a place where Jewish people of multiple denominations and generations can find a spiritual home to worship, learn and explore Jewish living. Our new synagogue will be a place where Jewish families and individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, will find a warm and welcoming community.” David M. Tobolowsky, MD, president of Temple Samu-El Or Olom, added, “We look forward to combining our strengths into a right-sized, warm,

friendly, ritually diverse congregation, meeting the spiritual needs of South Dade ’s Jewish population.” Rabbi David Schonblum of Temple Samu-El Or Olom said of the merger, “I am pursuing my destiny and accomplishing my passion to enlighten people’s lives and spread the essence of Jewish values and identities. I strive to promote love and unity, the importance of taking pride in one’s Jewishness through study, devotion, song and meditation, and to bring all Jewish souls closer to their Jewish authenticity, as they are the key to our future.” Challenging economic conditions, changing demographics in the Jewish community and understanding shifts in the way people worship are among the contributing factors that led the two groups to each other. “This merger is a wonderful opportunity to preserve two congregations, which have been in existence for more than 30 years,” said Sheri Lieberman, president of Congregation Bet Breira. “By bringing these two communities together, we can build on the strengths of everyone.” Bet Breira’s pre- and day schools will remain under the leadership of directors Dr. Francine Hamel and Neal Hamel. Samu-El Or Olom’s preschool will merge with Bet Breira’s preschool, which welcomes children ages 15 months through pre-kindergarten, and is an approved Florida VPK Provider. Bet Breira’s day school remains open for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. A joint religious school program will be conducted on Sunday mornings. For membership information, call 305-595-1500. For information about Bet Breira School, call 305-595-3008.

Father, son team for opening pitch of 2009 Marlins season Sean Romero, 12, (front left) waits for his chance throw the first pitch of the Florida Marlins 2009 season in front of 34,000 fans at Dolphin Stadium on Apr. 6. He attended the game with his sister Natalie (to his right), his grandparents Antonio and Esther Romero, and his mother Ivonne Romero. Brothers Victor and Greg and best friend Kevin (not pictured) also attended. Sean’s father, Senior Master Sgt. Tony Romero stationed in Iraq made a surprise visit on the Jumbotron during the pre-game ceremony. (U.S. Air Force photo)

BY 2ND LT. ERIK HOFMEYER Senior Master Sgt. Tony Romero’s son Sean, 12, arrived with his family at Dolphins Stadium for the first game of the Florida Marlins 2009 season like any of the 34,000 fans in attendance. But Sean had no idea about the once-in-a-lifetime surprise the Marlins and his family had in store for him on this grand day for America’s favorite pastime. In a couple of hours he would be on center stage throwing out the ceremonial first pitch of the 2009 season. This opportunity for Sean came about while the 482nd Fighter Wing coordinated the opening day F-16 flyover with the Marlins organization. The Marlins’ director of game presentation proposed the idea of having the son or daughter of a deployed reservist throw out the first pitch, and show video on the Jumbotron of the child’s parent in Iraq. A perfect match was found with the Romero family, who live in west MiamiDade. Sgt. Romero is the life support NCOin-charge from the 93rd Fighter Squadron, Homestead Air Reserve Base. He returned home from a deployment to Joint Base Balad, Iraq, on Apr. 9. Each of his four children love the Marlins and hadn’t seen their dad in more than three months. Sean’s mother, Ivonne; his younger sister, Natalie, and two adult brothers, Victor and Greg, all accompanied their brother during his special day.

“No way!” a wild-eyed Sean said after learning he would be throwing out the first pitch. “Who knew about this?” Marlins’ staff members subsequently gave Sean his own customized jersey with “Romero” and the number “09” on the back. He also met with starting pitcher Josh Johnson and closer Matt Lindstrom for a few minutes. When the time came for the opening ceremony, Sean and his family were led to the field and waited by the visiting team’s dugout until he was escorted to the pitcher’s mound. Then, an announcement was made to look up at the Jumbotron where a surprise appearance was made by Sgt. Romero. “Hello, South Florida. I’m Senior Master Sergeant Tony Romero from Homestead Air Reserve Base, and currently deployed to Joint Base Balad, Iraq. I’m going to ask my son Sean to help me throw out the first pitch of the exciting Florida Marlins 2009 season. Here you go Sean; I’ll see you soon. Go Marlins!” he said. The opening pitch was a team-effort between father and son. Sean did exactly what his dad asked of him and threw a strike down the center of the plate to second baseman Dan Uggla. The crowd gave a roaring applause and Dan Uggla ran up to the mound to congratulate Sean. The playing of the national anthem by the band Chicago and a flyover capped the pre-game ceremony. “My favorite part was seeing my dad on the screen,” Sean said. “I didn’t expect that at all.”

The National Achievement Scholarship Program has announced the names of some 800 outstanding Black American high school seniors who have won Achievement Scholarship awards for college undergraduate study. Their awards, totaling $2.6 million, are being financed by grants from more than 40 corporate organizations and professional associations, and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition established in 1964 specifically to honor scholastically talented Black American youth, and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition. The 2009 program marks 45 annual competitions in which more than 29,500 participants will have received scholarships worth over $93 million. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a notfor-profit organization that operates without government assistance. Achievement Scholar designees announced include 700 winners of National Achievement $2,500 Scholarships. All Finalists in the 2009 competition were considered for these single-payment scholarships, which were awarded on a regional representation basis, in numbers proportional to the population of Black Americans in each geographic region. About 100 scholars are recipients of corporate-sponsored Achievement Scholarship awards. More than 150,000 students entered the 2009 National Achievement Scholarship Competition by requesting consideration when they took the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors. In September 2008, approximately 1,600 of the highest scorers were named semifinalists on a regional rep-

resentation basis. To continue in the competition, semifinalists had to fulfill requirements for finalist standing, which included having a record of consistently high academic performance; being endorsed and recommended by an official of their high school; earning SAT scores that confirm their PSAT/NMSQT performance, and submitting an essay about personal interests, attainments, and goals. Some 1,300 semifinalists advanced to the finalist level, and all National Achievement Scholarship winners were selected from this group of outstanding students. Achievement Scholar awardees are the finalist candidates judged to have the strongest record of accomplishments and greatest potential for academic success in college. Local scholars are: Janel P. BE CAREFUL OF ALLIGATORS DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR Spring is when Florida’s alligators start getting active, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is urging Floridians and visitors to be cautious when having fun in and around water. Alligators abound in all 67 counties and have shared marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes with people for centuries. But, because more individuals are seeking waterfront property and water-related activities increase during the warm months, people should be alert when they are in areas where alligators could be present. State law prohibits the harassment of alligators, and it is against the law to feed them. According to the FWC, if you encounter an alligator that poses a threat to you, your pets or your property, and the alligator is more than four feet long, call the FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (392-4286). This number is the primary contact for all alligator complaints and is available to customers 24 hours a day. For more information on alligator behavior, go to <www.MyFWC.com/gators>.

UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY OF MIAMI TO HOST ANNUAL BENEFIT LUNCHEON United Cerebral Palsy has announced its sixth annual Share and Care Fundraising luncheon on Tuesday, Apr. 21, 11:45 a.m., at the Hyatt Downtown Miami, 400 SE Second Ave. There will be a special appearance by UCP president and CEO Joseph Aniello who will speak about the organization. Guests also will have the opportunity to share in an afternoon filled with performances by the children and a presentation from the adults served by UCP. Fancy Nancy Dress-Up Party slated at Alper JCC, Apr. 19 BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Nancy Clancy, heroine of the popular young readers’ series Fancy Nancy, knows how to add glamour to her daily routine. Adorned with a purple boa and pink ballet slippers, costume jewelry, heels and a tiara, Nancy loves it when everyone is extravagant and excessive — especially her family — which rarely happens. Robin Preiss Glasser, the talented illustrator of these beloved books, is a special guest at the upcoming Fancy Nancy Dress-Up Party on Sunday, Apr. 19, 1-3 p.m., at the Alper JCC, 11155 SW 112 Ave. in Kendall. Admission is $5 per child; adults are free. Glasser reads from her magical new story, Bonjour Butterfly, in which Nancy, who is quite taken with the exquisite look of butterflies, can’t wait for her friend Bree’s Butterfly Birthday. “When Nancy finds out she can’t go because her grandparents’ 50th anniversary party is the same day, she is furious,” Glasser said. Will Nancy be able to overcome her disappointment? “Everybody’s favorite fancy girl gets a surprise lesson in ‘fancy’ from her grandparents,” Glasser hints. Looks like fancy runs in the family after all! With respect and good manners, Nancy endears herself to readers with her poise and extraordinary self-confidence. She is unlike others in her family, but they love her and allow her to be her creative, fancy self all the time. On Sunday at the Alper JCC, guests

BY LISA WORLEY Nearly 300 supporters gathered at Bongos Cuban Café on Sunday, Mar. 15, for the 2009 fundraiser of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Urology. This year’s theme, “Dancing for CURED,” the department’s Center for Urologic Research, Education and Diseases (CURED), channeled the Latin energy of South Florida into a memorable evening for everyone. Guests were able to enjoy an endless Latin buffet, the Wines of Spain, as well as mingle with some of the most renowned talent of the musical and entertainment worlds. Singer Jon Secada was on hand, joined by famed bongo player Tany Gil, who did not disappoint, treating the crowd to an impromptu performance. Univision stars Lili Estefan and Raul De Molina showed their support as the Bongos house deejay made sure plenty of music was on hand. If that wasn’t enough, a surprise visit from renowned trumpet player Arturo Sandoval had everyone stand up and take notice. “It was a festive atmosphere that thrived on the great sense of communi-

ty,” said Dr. Mark S. Soloway, professor and chair of the Department of Urology and a recognized leader in treating prostate, bladder and kidney cancers. He was surrounded by a team of nearly 30 physicians, scientists and other specialists in the department who work continuously on improving diagnoses, treatment and quality of life for patients with urologic cancer and disease. “It was inspiring to see so many people come together on one night to support a cause that touches so many lives,” Soloway said. Prostate cancer is now the leading cancer among men, affecting one in six in their lifetime. Bladder cancer is the fourth most prevalent cancer in men and the ninth most prevalent in women, making diagnoses and therapies critical. Gloria and Emilio Estefan were honorary chairs for the event, and have long been supporters of the research done at the Miller School in the past. Brother Jose Estefan represented the family at the festivities. Between the generous support of those on hand, and even people who couldn’t attend, “Dancing for CURED” was able to raise more than $100,000.

Book tells of one of greatest tennis matches of all time BY JILL BROWNING Before the rivalries of Federer and Nadal and Borg and McEnroe, the most intense and hard-fought tennis match ever played was on the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon between the world champion, Don Budge, and the world’s most popular and dashing player, Baron Gottfried von Cramm, on July 20, 1937. This match for the Davis Cup, recounted in A Terrible Splendor by Marshall Jon Fisher, not only pitted America against Germany and democracy against fascism, but it also set two indomitable athletes against each other, one of whom was literally playing to save his life. As A Terrible Splendor moves from one set to the next, culminating in a nail-biting fifth set in which both men refuse to yield, Marshall Jon Fisher brilliantly cuts away to evoke the social and political life of pre-World War II Germany, Britain and America. Unknown to all who on that July day drank in the miracle of the Budge vs. von Cramm match, Germany already was laying plans for war, von Cramm would be imprisoned within a year, and Budge would eventually fight to see his on-court nemesis freed. Tennis would never be the same. A Terrible Splendor is a masterly work, presenting “the greatest tennis match ever played” as a conspicuous example of grace under pressure, a redemptive triumph, and a glorious reminder — even with world war about to erupt — of the humanity that unites us all. Marshall Jon Fisher has written for The Atlantic on topics ranging from wooden tennis rackets to Internet fraud, and has also written for Harper’s

and Discover, among other magazines. His essay “Memoria ex Machina” appeared in Best American Essays 2003. He is the coauthor (with his father David E. The Duran family, a New Generation of hearing Starting a new company may be a daunting task for some, but not for the brother and sister team of Dr. Joseph K. Duran and Yvette Duran Someillan. They combined their vast knowledge and experience in the field of Audiology and hearing aids and embarked on a new business venture. Before receiving a doctorate degree in Audiology at the University of South Florida, Joseph Duran started his work with hearing loss and hearing aids at a very young age at Caribe Hearing Aids in Miami. While studying at Miami Dade College he worked as a Hearing Instrument Specialist and realized his passion for the field. He felt the need to continue his studies and found that Audiology, encompassing hearing and balance disorders, brought him the satisfaction he was looking for. It afforded him the opportunity to not only help patients with hearing loss, but also those suffering from dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Joseph had the opportunity to sharpen his skills as an audiologist at the University of Miami Ear Institute. His sister Yvette, who also started working at Caribe Hearing Aids at a young age, “did not think I would spend most of my life in this industry.” But while studying Accounting at Florida International University (FIU) she also studied for and received a license to sell and dispense hearing aids. After graduating from FIU she decided to continue working at Caribe and applied her accounting knowledge to the administrative side of the business. Naturally, when the Duran’s decided to open their own business, New Generation Hearing Centers, in January of this year, they divided the responsibilities. Yvette is in charge of operations, while Joseph attends to their patients. Both married with children, they believe that owning their own business allows them to continue their careers while, at the same time affording them time to spend with their families. Together, the team has accumulated 30 years of experience in both Audiology and the Hearing Aid industry, making them well prepared when they opened the doors of their new office at 3431 SW 107th Avenue in Miami, Florida in January 2009. Choosing a place to start was not a problem. Joseph and Yvette both grew up in this area of Miami. They both went to Rockway Elementary, and while Yvette continued her education at St. Brendan High School, Joseph attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. Born of Cuban parents, Dr. Duran and his sister Yvette are fluent in Spanish and English. “This is our home, we know the people and we understand their needs”, commented Joseph Duran, 32, Co-President and Director of Audiology of New Generation Hearing Centers. Although Dr. Duran does not specialize in children under the age of ten, he has patients up to the age of 106. Recently, he had to look for solutions for a

patient who suddenly (within seconds) lost his hearing in one ear because of a displaced shot while cleaning a firearm. Another patient lost hearing in one ear while scuba diving. “Luckily he came to see me right away, so I was able to have him begin treatment with an Otolaryngologist getting him on the road to recovery,” stated Dr. Duran. Based on their years of involvement with the sale of hearing instruments, the Duran’s have been able to keep their finger on the pulse of any and all new technological advancements in their field. They are able to empathize with their patients and understand how hearing loss, when untreated, can lead to other health related problems such as stress, fatigue, decreased self-confidence, and in extreme cases, depression.

The transition from analog to digital technology in the last 10 years has completely changed the menu for hearing aids. “Now our patients have more options,” affirmed Yvette Duran Someillan, 38, CoPresident and Director of Operations of New Generation Hearing Centers. Since the appearance of digital hearing aids, open fittings, and Bluetooth compatibility (technology that allows for cordless communication between hearing aids and cell phone or other electronic devices), many people with hearing difficulties feel more comfortable wearing them. Digital hearing aids, in comparison with analog systems, are extremely flexible in terms of programming. Since they come equipped with computer chips, environmental sounds can be adjusted automatically. Wearing a hearing aid is no longer cumbersome or a nuisance, hearing aids are now discreet and can be fit to suit any lifestyle. “That has allowed me to offer made-to-order hearing aids to my patients,” explained Dr. Duran. For example, one of his patients is a teacher and reported difficulty hearing the students sitting in the last row of his class. Dr. Duran programmed his hearing aids to allow this patient to hear those students by simply pressing a button. When not in class, the patient only has to touch the same button again for the hearing aid to function properly in other situations. New Generation Hearing Centers offers a wide range of hearing aid types and styles with prices starting at $500. Most of the hearing aid cost is generally paid for by the patient since most insurance plans will only cover a portion of the total price. More advanced models begin at $1,300. A majority of the hearing aids available have been designed by large manufacturers, one of them being well-known, Swiss-made Phonak Hearing Instruments. It is because of the many years in the field of audiology that both Dr. Duran and his sister felt secure in their ability to achieve success with this business venture, even in this unstable economy. The Durans said…“We believe we are giving a much needed service in an area we know and love”.

Legal Up! recognizes those working with at-risk youth BY LAURI OLIVA Judges from the local, state and federal courts — along with some of Miami’s most prominent lawyers — gathered recently at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Miami to be recognized for volunteer work they have done on behalf of Lawyers for Literacy’s Legal Up! Program. Legal Up! is a collaborative initiative led by U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro and Lisa Blair, president of the MiamiDade Family Learning Partnership. It seeks to address the challenges that face vulnerable youth transitioning to adulthood by teaching basic legal concepts and related life skills in four interactive workshops. The sessions, which are taught by legal professionals, cover such topics as: the rule of law, civic responsibility and criminal law; housing and landlord/tenant law, and financial literacy and employment. Youth participants are recruited from foster care, alternative high schools and juvenile detention. The program is sponsored by the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership and partly funded

Law students from the University of Miami School of Law, Florida International University College of Law and St. Thomas University School of Law were recognized for their contributions to the Lawyers for Literacy’s Legal Up! Program, which teaches basic legal concepts and life skills to at-risk youth. Pictured (l-r) are Seamus J. Barron, St. Thomas University; Michael A. Shifrin, Florida International University; Josalyn M. Riedler, University of Miami School of Law; Abbigail Webb, University of Miami School of Law; Marissa Gray, University of Miami School of Law; Steven P. Stavich, Florida International University; Gian Ratnapala, St. Thomas University, and Jeffrey A. LaClair, St. Thomas University.

by the Children’s Trust. “We are working diligently to empower these young adults, give them better problem-solving skills and help them advocate for themselves,” said Blair, who founded the program in 2004 along with Judge Ungaro. Blair added that more than 200 youth have completed the program with 87 percent showing a gain in knowledge after a post-participation testing. In the past three years, more than 190 volunteer judges, lawyers and law students have participated in the program. Among the volunteers are United States District Judges, United States Magistrate Judges, United States Bankruptcy Judges, Florida Circuit and County Judges and Judge Alex Ferrer from the nationally syndicated court show Judge Alex. Mark LaPointe, a former district attorney and now a lawyer with Boies, Schiller & Flexner, has been a volunteer for the past two years. For more information about the Legal Up! program, contact Lisa Blair, MS Ed, president, Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership Inc. at 305-891-7323.

Local businessman will make your Mercedes-Benz sparkle BY RON BEASLEY Earl (E.T.) Barnes has been taking care of other people’s cars since 1984, but it wasn’t until three years later that he decided to specialize in just one brand – Mercedes-Benz. “I started in this business in 1987,” Barnes said. “I originally started out in 1984, just washing cars for everyone. But I decided to concentrate on one brand and I closed it down, and then re-opened in 1987 for Mercedes-Benz owners only. I researched the market and I just decided to build on one brand.” And it has worked out very well for Barnes. After forming the company officially titled “Ash-B the Benz Cleaner” — derived from his wife’s maiden name, Ashford, and his last name — Barnes has developed a reputation and come to be known around south Miami-Dade County as “the Benz Cleaner.” “We provide auto detailing and cleaning to Mercedes-Benz owners only,” Barnes said. “It’s an exclusive service for Mercedes owners. We go to their home or office once a week and we have a regular maintenance plan that we adhere to.” Clients are billed and pay on either a

quarterly or annual basis. “We set them up on a scheduled maintenance and it’s the same schedule every week,” Barnes said. “For example, if you’re vehicle is scheduled for service on Friday at 9 a.m., then we’ll be there every Friday at 9 a.m., unless we need to reschedule because weather doesn’t permit us to perform the maintenance or the client is out of town with the car for some reason.” Clients also have the option of rescheduling so they don’t miss out on the regularly scheduled service appointments. “We have a very good clientele,” Barnes said. “But it could be better. Last year we lost a number of clients because of the downturn in the economy.” Until late last year, Ash-B The Benz Cleaner was servicing clients in North Miami-Dade and South Broward, but Barnes said the schedule was just too difficult to maintain. So, he reduced his service area to south Miami-Dade. “It just got to be too expensive to travel all the way up there,” he said. “We just decided to take the loss and focus on the south Miami-Dade area, which includes Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay and Kendall.”

However, Barnes continues to service one client on South Miami Beach, one that has been with him since he started the business. “It’s the Gershon Group, the designers,” Barnes said. “Rory Gershon was my very first customer in 1984 and they’re still with me today.” The annual fee to become a client of Ash-B The Benz Cleaner is $2,700, and that includes servicing your Mercedes once every week for 52 weeks. Not bad when you consider that the average car wash in Miami-Dade is going for $13. For that fee, every week of the year Barnes thoroughly cleans both the interior and exterior of the vehicle — complete vacuuming, cleaning the interior and all leather surfaces — with each visit and once a month he performs a full-service detailing, including waxing. For information, call 305588-7972 or go online to <www.ash-b.com>.

Lincoln targets younger market with 2009 MKS sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Lincoln marketing folks say they are targeting a more youthful market with the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS full-size sedan. It it’s a new tack for the American luxury brand, and it just might be a good one. The MKS does have a new look to go along with Lincoln’s reputation for quality and luxury. In fact, even if the new model misses the connection with younger adults, it has all the necessary accoutrements to attract the traditional older consumers who have been buying Lincolns for decades. It’s nicely styled with a long and muscular body trimmed with an abundance of chrome. On the inside, it’s almost roomy enough to set up housekeeping, and the luxurious leather upholstery is soft and supple. Aside from all that, the MKS is loaded with the latest technology. The Next-

Generation Navigation System with Sirius Travel Link has an eight-inch dash display screen that’s easy to read and operate. It allows drivers to do such things as track regional weather patterns in real-time, pull up a five-day forecast, check on traffic jams ahead, keep tabs on the latest sports scores, and find out where the latest movies are playing and when they start. You can even play DVD movies or locate the nearest gas stations and determine how much they’re charging for a gallon of fuel. Aside from all that, the Lincoln MKS is a pretty darn good American-made automobile that stacks up very well against the German and Japanese competitors. The ride is smooth and comfortable, but not overly so, and it handles the highway very competently and safely. This is a car just made for a long trip on the open highway. Under the hood there’s a 3.7-liter 273 hp DOHC 24-valve V-6 engine that runs like it was a V-8. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and delivers 17/24 mpg. Front-wheel drive is standard on the MKS, but all-wheel drive is available. Four option packages are available:

Lincoln MKS has long, muscular body with ample chrome trim.

Navigation Package ($2,995) adds voice-activated DVD navigation system, THX II w. 5.1 premium surround-sound audio, and a rearview camera. Technology Package ($1,115) upgrades with adaptive headlamps with auto high beam, rain-sensing wipers, forward sensing parking-aid system, rear-window power sunshade, intelligent access with push-button start. Ultimate Package ($5,715) includes the Technology Package, Navigation Package, dual-panel moonroof, 19-inch premium painted wheels, Ultimate seating trim with seat color-keyed suede strip in the center of the seatbacks and an

embroidered Lincoln Star logo on the front headrests. Aluminum Appliqué Package ($195) features aluminum instrument panel appliqué, leather shift knob, leatherwrapped steering wheel. The Lincoln MKS is available in only one model and it has a base price $38,465. All-wheel drive costs an additional $1,890.
