Resident writes book to inspire, motivate BY GARY ALAN RUSE arl Mathis, who has lived in Cutler Bay and the South Florida area for 16 years, has drawn on the challenges of his own life to write an inspirational and motivational book that he hopes may help others. Life Is What You Make It: Build a Better Life for You and Your Family is the title of the book written by a quiet, modest and confident man who was born on the tropical island of Grenada and came to the United States in 1977. After coping with the death of his wife and the challenges of raising his three sons as a single parent, Mathis felt motivated to

Scouts learn about citizenship by attending town hall meeting

ixteen Boy Scouts from Troop 314, chartered to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Cutler Bay, attended a Cutler Bay town hall meeting on Saturday, Mar. 18, in order to earn their Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge. The Scouts spent the day with Cutler Bay Council members, Mayor Paul Vrooman and Vice Mayor Edward MacDougall. The boys learned about the inner workings of town hall meetings and the important issues expressed there.

When you look around, it seems like you are surrounded by a different body of water in every direction, either at beaches, lakes or backyard pools. With all of this water around us, we must remember to teach our kids about water safety. Drowning is the No. 1 cause of death for children in Miami-Dade County. Since the beginning of 2007, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue has responded to 199 drownings. The majority of these incidents

Now is time to think about summer and water safety

In order to reach the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts must fulfill many requirements, including the completion of at least 21 merit badges. Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge is one of the 12 required merit badges, along with Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, First Aid and Emergency Preparedness, to name some.
