Special election to address candidate and police issues BY GARY ALAN RUSE oming up on June 25, in a special election using mail-in ballots, the residents of Cutler Bay will have a chance to amend the town charter relating to two issues affecting local government. The first proposed charter amendment is pretty straightforward, designed to help local elections better mesh with the workings of county, state and federal election policies. It reads: “The Town Charter currently provides for qualification periods for candidates for Town elections that may only be altered by amending the Charter. It is proposed that the Charter be amended to allow the Town to alter those qualifying periods by ordinance if necessary to comply with changes to state or federal law or to the policies of the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections office. Shall the above-described Charter Amendment be adopted?” The second item on the ballot

The Fair awards more than $122,000 in scholarships BY MICHELLE PALOMINO Having just completed another successful run of the Miami-Dade County Fair, The Fair hosted the 38th annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony, during which 60 students from both public and private senior high schools in MiamiDade County were awarded $2,000 each in scholarship money to further their education. The scholarship recipients are dedicated high school seniors who plan on attending an accredited college, university or trade school. In its 58 year History, the Miami-Dade County Fair has awarded more than $8 million in scholarships, awards and premiums to students in the community. This not-for-profit organization is the largest local scholarship sponsor for high school students. The Fair’s scholarship program is but one of the many ways that The Fair gives back to the community. Girls State delegates chosen, to spend week in Tallahassee BY GARY ALAN RUSE A dozen young ladies selected as local delegates of District 14 for the 2009 Florida Girls State session in Tallahassee gathered with alternates, parents and officers of the Women’s Auxiliary at American Legion Post No. 133 in Palmetto Bay for an orientation meeting on Sunday, May 17. The annual summertime citizenship training program gives girls a chance to study local, county and state government processes by setting up their own miniature city, county and state governments and administering them according to the laws of their particular state. Candidates must have competed their junior year in high school, have an interest in government and current events, have high moral character, strong leadership abilities and an above average scholastic standing. “I think this may be one of the best groups of girls we’ve ever had,” said Maureen Peterson, unit chair at Post 133. The girls will board a chartered bus at 4 a.m. on July 2 and head to Tallahassee for a one week program that will allow them to sit in during sessions at the state capitol, campaigning, “party” rallies, debates and voting. Some will be elected to high positions in the mock government and all will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the political process. For the first time this year, the girls will stay in a new college dormitory during their visit, with the usual supervision and strict guidelines regarding such things as their schedule, dress code and cell phone use. “It’s not exactly like prison, but it’s close,” Patty May, state director of the program, jokingly told the girls. May filled them in on the rules and the

required to contract with and pay for specialized police services from Miami-Dade County. It is proposed that the Charter be amended to eliminate the requirement to pay additional fees for the services and to eliminate the ‘favored nation’ status for specialized police services. Shall the above-described Charter Amendment be adopted?” Mayor Paul Vrooman thinks both items are a “no-brainer,” but especially regarding the police services.

“It’s an experience the girls get that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and it often can have an impact on their choice of careers.” — Patty May needed paperwork, and also told them of the expanded computer lab this year’s participants will have to draft their bills for the mock sessions. Some girls will be eligible for special scholarships that will be awarded covering two years at Tallahassee State College and two years at Florida State University. Samsung also awards annual scholarships through the American Legion and the Girls State Program to daughters of American service men and women. May lauded the program for the many benefits it offers the young women. “It’s an experience the girls get that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and it often can have an impact on their choice of careers,” May said. “They’ve never met the other girls and they’re thrust into the situation where they need to sink or swim. Some of them just excel, and it’s inspiring to watch. They learn a lot about government but they also learn about leadership and what they’re made of, and they make lifelong friends.” The participants will check out of Girls State on Friday, July 10, and return to South Florida by bus.

“It will change the charter so we don’t have to pay for specialized police services,” Mayor Vrooman said. “We will save a great deal of money. We will still receive those services, but we’re paying twice for that now, since we’re paying countywide as citizens of the county, too. So we need to tidy-up the charter to allow that to happen.” Mayor Vrooman urges residents to take the special election seriously, read the items carefully and realize that they won’t be giving up anything. “They’re not voting to get rid of specialty police services,” Vrooman assured. “They’re voting to not have to pay for it twice.”

Hurricane season is almost upon us again Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN Storm Prep Expo — Cristina Rodriguez tells us that the American Red Cross and Miami-Dade County will jointly host the second annual Storm Prep Expo on May 30 and May 31 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, Hall D, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special guests include former Miami Heat player Alonzo Mourning, former National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield, and chief meteorologists from WFOR Ch. 4, WTVJ Ch. 6, WSVN Ch. 7, WPLG Ch. 10, WLTV Ch. 23 and WJAN Ch. 41. Hurricanes have spared Miami-Dade County for the past four years, fortunately, but most South Floridians remember the damage these powerful storms can cause. Guests will have the opportunity to become familiar with products and services offered by local companies to help them prepare for the hurricane season. Don’t know what to do if a storm hits? Special presentations have been put together by police and fire-rescue departments to inform guests about necessary safety precautions for protecting their home and family. Student essay winners... The American Civil Liberties Foundation of Florida announced the winners of the second annual Zelda Glazer Civil Liberties Writing Competition on Friday, May 9 at the annual ACLU of Florida Greater Miami Chapter Law

Day event. The winners, all Miami-Dade Public School high school seniors, were joined by their teachers and instructional supervisors of the Miami-Dade County Public School’s Division of Language Arts/Reading, an instrumental partner of the competition. All of the winning essays can be viewed online at <www.aclufl.org/zelda>. First place winner Noel Kassewitz, a student in Voncia Barno’s class at Coral Reef Senior High School, submitted an essay comparing a society where the government could arrest and imprison a citizen arbitrarily in the absence of the constitutional protections granted in the Bill of Rights. Kassewitz was awarded $1,500 to pursue her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida. Second place winner Bernadette Guerra, a student of Ms. T. Simpson at American Senior High School won for her heartfelt essay regarding freedom of speech. She hopes her future career in Journalism will enable her to “help restore the dignity and poise of a voice.” She was awarded $1,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at The University of Florida. Third place winner Fabiana Ferrer, a student in Martha Cabrera’s class at Miami Springs High School, wrote that even in a post 9/11 world “The United States’ principals of freedom which separate this nation from dictatorships” must be upheld. She will use her $500 award to pursue higher education at FIU. Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, representing a sizeable chunk of East Kendall, proposed recall of the half-penny sales tax that was sold to fund Metrorail expansion but voters got maintenance, instead. Colleague Commissioner

Rebecca Sosa moved for a ‘watchdog’ ordinance to better control Citizen Independent Transportation Trust dollars over the next four years, too. Three very territorial Kendall Commissioners (Dennis Moss, Joe Martinez, and Javier Souto) said “no” to both measures May 19 while Gimenez and Katy Sorenson recorded “aye” votes. So Kendall voted 3-2 to defeat both resolutions since the overall commission vote tied 6-6, lacking a majority needed for approval of either one. Seems “we” stay on the opposite side of what we suspect Kendall, as a voting bloc, would strongly favor. So we’ll continue keeping track of who represents us — and how!

And don’t forget to watch for those special election mail-in ballots right here in your own communities. Read ‘em, cast your votes, participate! Thought of the Day: It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived. — George C. Patton Gary Alan Ruse and Richard Yager contributed to this column. Miami-Dade’s uncontrolled urban sprawl hurts us all R. Kenneth Bluh VIEWPOINT KENNETH’S COMMENTARY William E. Finley, author of Curing Urbanitis the Metropolitan Disease, states, “It was not until 1927 that the concept of public controls about what could be built where was approved by the U.S. Supreme Court, upholding a lower court decision that a municipality, in this case Euclid, OH, could adapt a communitywide set of regulations setting zoning for different land uses.” Before 1927, landowners could decide what they wanted to build on their land without the need to obtain the consent of any government agency. Sprawl was okay. Little consideration was given to the need for public transportation, more schools or the need for more law enforcement to cover the much larger area created by the sprawl. New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago all were developed before the emergence of the auto as a common mode of transportation. Not until Henry Ford, as pointed out by Finley, started

building cars for the masses did the idea of real estate sprawl take hold. The wider the spread of homes, the greater the need for public transportation. Children cannot travel dozens of miles to attend school, therefore sprawl requires the construction of more and more “neighborhood” schools. Sprawl affects every public service from transportation, to police, water and sewer service, electrical lines, to grocery stores. Miami-Dade County has unique problems. We are bounded by the Atlantic, Broward County, Florida Bay and the Everglades. We have very little expansion room before we are building in the Everglades. Our source of drinking water is in jeopardy as the construction of homes and commercial buildings moves closer and closer to the very edge of the Everglades. The concept of creating a line running south and then east restricting building to one home per five acres came into being to confine construction into a given area until we ran out of space, and then we would expand the line west, just enough to accommodate the community’s needs. Acquiring large tracts of land outside the developed areas of a community always has been desirable for builders as

the construction of large numbers of homes is cost effective. Our line of demarcation is called the Urban Development Boundary (UDB). It has served us well. We have moved the boundary only twice in the past 10 years, proving that the concept is sound. Recently, pressure was being brought to bear upon our county commissioners who once again moved the boundaries. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez is against the move, as is our state’s Department of Community Affairs, South Florida Regional Planning Council, Miami-Dade Planning and Zoning Department, Department of Environmental Protection and the South Florida Water Management District. Notwithstanding all the opposition from qualified public and private entities, our county commissioners, with few exceptions, voted to move the boundaries twice, once for the construction of a Lowe’s Superstore and once for commer-

cial zoning on 42 acres. Administrative law judge Bram Canter ruled against Lowe’s and in support of the 42 acres stating it cannot be used for agriculture. Commissioner Katy Sorenson, one of the few voices against UDB expansion, stated, “We have a choice — to sprawl or not. Instead of perpetuating a bad pattern of development, let’s invest in fixing our stressed and aging roads, bridges, water and sewer plants and pipes. Let’s give our transit system a fighting chance to catch up with our community’s transportation needs. We must break the bad habit of urban sprawl now.” Well said, Commissioner Sorenson.

In tough times, best to be positive while job hunting

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Looking for companies that are still hiring is quite the full-time job right now. Carlos Castro, an unemployed dry cleaner, can relate to this, as he has been forced to spend a lot of time improving his computer skills. Carlos said, “It takes a while…you have to fill out all your experience and education over and over again. It’s a whole process.” If you’re looking for a job, the experts are saying to be as positive as possible. Remember, it’s not about how badly you need to get back to work; it’s about convincing a prospective new employer how badly they need you. What you really want to know is who is hiring and what job skills are needed to get a new job. Florida’s Agency for Workforce Innovation forecasts continuing job growth in hi-tech areas such as Computer Network Management and

Support. Healthcare also is projected to be a growth area along with Financial Service specialists including loan officers, bill collectors and financial advisors. The overall job market, however, is expected to remain slow through possibly the first half of 2010. That means that local job seekers may need to look for as many part-time jobs as they can find in order to get their bills paid. Job fairs also can be helpful. Remember, job scams are still a major problem nationwide. Don’t pay anyone any fees if they promise they can find you a job. In almost all cases, companies looking for qualified workers pay employment agencies for referrals — not the job seekers themselves. Club teaches, promotes ancient sport of fencing Because you have a choice

BY ASRA JAWAID Michael Elder of South Miami has been practicing fencing for decades, ever since he saw it on the Zorro television show. So intrigued was he by this sport that he continues to practice to this very day. “Fencing is the western martial art that preserves the honor and beauty of sword fighting,” Elder said. “Nobody knows how old it is, but pictures [of it being practiced] have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. To nurture his love for this technically combative sport, Elder is general manager of the Miami Fencing Club. Together, this club of some 65 people meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:30 at South Miami Middle School, 6750 SW 60 St. Here, beginners harness their fencing skills from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and the intermediate/advanced group does the same from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Elder said the skills acquired through the practice of fencing are both physical (balance, hand-eye coordination) and mental (cunning and speed). “It’s as much of a brain game as it is physical,” he said. The registration fee varies depending on the number of sessions in a month. The cost of each individual session is

$6. This fee is collected on a monthly basis; a new term starts every six weeks. If you’d like to participate, simply show up on time dressed for a trip to the gym. You can sign up and begin training that evening. The club also meets every Saturday at Miami-Dade College’s Kendall campus. The beginner’s class practices from 2 to 4 p.m., and the advanced class members take their turn from 4 to 6 p.m. Obviously, the club, which was founded in 1987 by Tom Cragg, devotes quite a bit of time to perfecting the art form. But this practice is by no means for naught. Throughout the year, club members participate in various fencing competitions across the state and country. For example, on May 31 they will compete in the Gold Coast Championships, most probably in Miami, according to Elder. July 3 through 12, they’ll travel to Grapevine, TX, for the Summer National Championships. To find out about private lessons, contact Elder at 305-992-1946 or send email to him at <miamifencingclub@couragenow.com>. To read more about the club; see a list of upcoming competitions, and view pictures of current club members in action, visit online at <www.miamifencingclub.com>.

SPECIAL!

I am going to reveal a secret about Cutler Bay and I don’t care who knows it! You see, I am now a fervent listener to radio station WDNA because all of the other stupid radio stations that I listened to are now doing “sports talk,” which to me is the most boring thing in the world on radio. WDNA features jazz, which is my favorite kind of music. Apparently a couple of Cutler Bay merchants decided to get together and have a “Jazz Night” every Thursday. Lino Alvarez, owner of Miami Wings at 19401 S. Dixie Hwy., and his neighbor Mike Cohen of Musicians Discount Center put it together. Being a lover of jazz and hearing so much about this venue on WDNA, I decided to give it a try. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up going home a lot later than I anticipated. (Ask my wife.) The music was just fantastic. Different people kept coming through the door lugging their own instruments and sitting in with the group already assembled. Each musician seemed to have his or her own style and blended perfectly with the others. A woman — who looked like anybody’s mother, aunt or sister — got up and blew a trumpet like I have never heard before. She was accompanied by a young boy, probably not old enough to drink or even be up that late, who also played his trumpet as well as any of the pros there. A couple of guys, who I believe were

from FIU, sat in, adding even more excitement. A young guy unpacked his guitar and blew me away with his bluesy sound. I hear he also plays on Tuesdays, which is “Blues Night.” I even saw a guy lug in a full size string bass (When’s the last time you saw or heard one of those?) and replaced the electric bass guitar that had been playing. A new piano player sat in and once again changed the timbre of the music. Steve Kirkland plays tenor sax with a passion beyond compare. Mike Cohen, who is one of the best drummers I have heard since Art Blakey or Louis Bellson, kept driving the band like an 18-wheeler going down Dixie Highway. The frustrating part for me is when Mike began pleading with the audience for someone to take his place on the drums because he was just about worn out. Frustrating for me because many moons ago I did play drums but I was frankly frightened to death to get up there and follow Mike and perhaps look like a fool in front of a lot of people. I do enough of that at my council meetings. One guy did offer to play, but obviously had never played before and thought it was easy. He was dismissed promptly by Mike. The same thing probably would have happened to me. They finally found a young guy to sit in and save me the embarrassment, because I was almost ready to give it a try. Folks, for real music lovers, this is a genuine treasure, and here it is, right in Cutler Bay, at a Miami Wings no less. Please don’t tell too many people about it. It might get too crowded and besides, there are the Sunshine Laws.

Families are encouraged to contact park managers at the park of their interest for more information concerning the process and to learn if they qualify. Origins Cigars store offers convenience for cigar lovers BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD As more and more laws push smokers outside to enjoy their cigarettes, cigar smokers are finding more choices for where to go to enjoy their smoke in a comfortable environment. One of the newer cigar stores is Origins Cigars, located at 18901 SW 106 Ave., Unit 128, in the Center at Cutler Bay. It is just across the street from BJ’s. Origins is owned by Karel Martinez, whose face might be familiar to those who watch Spanish language television. Martinez has been a guest star on Spanish soap operas that have run on Telemundo and Univision and he had a show called Mi Primer Hogar. Martinez is a native of Cuba and came to the United States by way of Guantanamo. He and his family were on a boat and they braved high seas in their quest to leave the island nation. But when they couldn’t get to shore, Martinez jumped into shark-infested waters in order to get to the U.S. Naval base. The family spent six months living in the Cuban tent city in Guantanamo that was set up in 1994 when there were fears of anoth-

er Mariel boatlift. The Martinez family had applied for a visa but came to believe that the Cuban government was not going to let them leave before Karel would have to remain in the communist country in order to fulfill military obligations. “I’ve always dreamed of this, of having a cigar store, a cigar lounge,” Martinez said. “My two passions are cigars and acting. But if I have to chose, I choose this because I get to spend more time with my family.” His dream came true in March. Although Origins has been open only a short time, customers have discovered the place. One man followed his nose into Origins, saying the aroma drew him. “People are coming here already,” Martinez said. “I have the wine, and I have cigar brands you are only going to find here.” Origins carries cigars in a wide range of prices, starting at $2 a cigar. He even had a special brand that cost $40 a cigar. He did not keep that box in the store but would bring them in at customer’s request. Origins also carries a variety of brands from Gurkars to Arthur Fuentes to all types of premium cigars and wines.

Karel Martinez lights up in his new cigar shop, Origins.

The store not only carries premium cigars, it also carries premium wines. Every Friday they have wine tastings. “I call it Special Fridays,” he said. “We have wines that you will not be able to find in Publix. I have the wine; I have cigar brands you are only going to find here.”

Origins also has a 46-inch television to watch sporting events in the comfort of overstuffed chairs and good company. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday the store is open from noon to 5 p.m. For information, call 305-252-1314.

“B.A.M.” was the keyword at the May 14 luncheon of the Cutler Bay Business Association. “B.A.M.” stands for Bay Area Mentors, specially formed to provide a summer youth basketball league in Cutler Bay. Sgt. Carlos Rosario of the Miami-Dade Police Department told the group about a new community partnership that has created “B.A.M.”, a league operating from June 15 to July 23, with a tournament playoff followed by an awards banquet. In a summer when budget cuts have closed the usual summer school programs, a trio of groups has come together to sponsor a twice-weekly basketball session for students from four area middle schools. The sponsors include Cutler Bay Business Association, Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Cutler Bay Policing Unit. Police and civilians will share coaching duties for 80 teenagers in teams for boys and teams for girls. The business community is providing financial sponsors on three levels: for a team, for a game, and for an individual player. Team sponsors will have their company names printed on the team shirts. Business owners are also filling “goody bags” for each team member. The funds from business donors will also allow purchase of uniforms, supplies, water dispensers, sports bottles and awards at the BAM banquet at Southland Mall. Sponsors for the CBBA luncheon were Ray Perez of the Marlin Restaurant and Joie Walker of Weathermakers. Walker addressed the CBBA group with a short profile of his business services.

New eatery serves good food and ’50s era films BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD In these tough economic times, people are seeking comfort. That’s why Jesse Vazquez decided to open Cine-It Burger & Grill at the Suniland Shopping Center. The new restaurant offers “comfort foods,” starting with delicious burgers, shoestring fries, salads and chicken sandwiches. Vazquez is familiar to area residents, because he used to own two Chicken Kitchens. “My first store was the one in Pinecrest,” he said. “Back in 2008, I decided to retire and I sold my restaurants. Eventually I got bored and I had a concept I always wanted to do. Being times are tough for people, I wanted to open a restaurant that brought back happier days. That’s where Cine-It was born.” He said the concept is pretty simple — serve comfort foods, which include burgers, shakes, fries, and salads. “We also feature the original sliders,” he said. “The sliders are made the old fashioned way.” Everything is made fresh to order, including the shoestring fries. The burgers are made of 100 percent beef and are big and juicy. The toppings are included in the price of the burger.

Customers order at the front registers, then sit down while their orders are being cooked. “While you eat, we entertain you with 1950s Sci Fi classics such as The Incredible Shrinking Man, Dr. Cyclops, and The Mole People to name a few,” Vazquez said. Cine-It also shows the classic Flash Gordon series. Vazquez said teens will get a kick out of the 1950s special effects. “They will love the sparklers that show from behind the spaceship as it flies into space,” he said with a laugh. “Families can enjoy the movies while the kids watch Popeye, Betty Boop or the Little Rascals in their own kids section.” Vazquez also used creativity in creating the menu. The “Main Event” includes four types of burgers. The sliders are called “Honey I Shrunk the Burgers.” Hot dogs are “Slum Dogs.” And for those who like soup, “Yes, Soup for You,” a tip of the hat to the classic Seinfeld espisode. Cine-It also has “Creature Feature” kids meals. Kids can choose from sliders and fries, hot dogs or a cheese sandwich. Future plans include a breakfast buffet on weekends, delivery to Pinecrest/ Palmetto Bay and the Falls, as well as kids meal pizza and birthday parties.

Cine-It Burger & Grill owner Jesse Vazquez (left) is pictured with employees Monica Paicely and Yaniel Sosa.

“We will cater to the individuals,” Vazquez said. “We’d like to film the parties and show it on the kids’ TV.” At the birthday parties he’s considering having kids play scenes from old movies. “We’ll get some costumes and role play,” he said. Adults and teens will enjoy the Godzilla Nights starting in May. Vazquez said they

will play Godzilla movies from 8 p.m. to closing and feature Godzilla Burgers made of double patties, cheddar cheese, grilled mushrooms and onions. “There’s a little for everyone here,” he said. “This is a family friendly place.” Cine-It Burger & Grill is located at 11421 S. Dixie Hwy. For more information, call 305-254-7950.

Lisa Unger to discuss her latest novel Die For You BY CAMILLE MCDUFFIE

New York Times bestselling writer Lisa Unger (Black Out, Sliver of Truth, and Beautiful Lies) believes that there is little to fear from strangers, and national trends bear this out, revealing that “stranger crimes” are at an all time low across the nation. “Interestingly enough, the greatest threat, particularly to women and children, is generally from someone dwelling under the same roof — someone they love and trust who is sleeping beside them,” she said. “This sense of domestic danger has never been more palpable than in her riveting and accomplished fourth novel, Die For You, to be published on June 2 by Shaye Areheart Books ($24). Unger will discuss and sign her new book on June 27, 7 p.m., at Books and Books in Coral Gables, 265 Aragon Ave. In the opening pages of Die For You, the reader is offered a window into the comfortable, happy life of successful novelist Isabel Raine and her husband, Marcus, a brilliant inventor of high-tech games. Free Children’s Trust Family Expo sponsored by Target set May 30 BY DESERAE E. DEL CAMPO The Children’s Trust 2009 Family Expo, sponsored by Target, will host its third annual, free, all-day festival to provide parents with direct access to educational, health and social services in a fun and festive atmosphere on Saturday, May 30, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at the MiamiDade County Fair and Expo Center, 10901 SW 24 St. (Coral Way). Already the largest free event of its kind in the community, with record crowds of more than 25,000 in prior years, the Children’s Trust Family Expo is expanding to accommodate the growing attendance. For the first time, the event will take place in both on-site exhibit halls, featuring workshops and more than 200 exhibitors showcasing information about summer and afterschool programs, injury prevention, vaccinations, programs for children with special needs, Pre-K registration, KidCare and much more. Each hall will have stages packed with entertainment; face painting; balloon sculpture; magicians, and character greeting for children to meet Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora, Diego and PBS Kids’ Clifford the Big Red Dog, Arthur, Alpha Pit and others. A special reading corner will feature storytelling and free books to take home. Target is providing an arts and crafts area as well as free water at its Hydration Station. Mobile units, bounce houses and rock climbing walls will be available outside. The Children’s Trust will give away free gifts to the first 3,000 chil-

dren. Admission, parking, all activities and entertainment are free. Food will be sold by vendors of the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition Center. “In these difficult economic times with so many families in need, an event like this becomes even more important to connect families to valuable services and especially in a fun and entertaining atmosphere that provides families with an opportunity to share quality time together at little or no cost to them,” said Modesto E. Abety, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust. “At a time when most corporate sponsorship is diminishing, we are fortunate to have significant support from Target to make the expansion of this event possible.” The sponsorship grant is part of an ongoing effort by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism. Today that equals more than $3 million every week. “At Target, our local grants are making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Laysha Ward, president, community relations, Target. “We’re proud to partner with The Children’s Trust as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work.” For more information about The Children’s Trust Family Expo, call 2-1-1 The Children’s Trust Helpline or visit online at <www.thechildrenstrust.org>.

Aston Martin DB9 sparks memories of James Bond Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS I had my James Bond moment recently when they delivered a gorgeous new 2009 charcoal grey Aston Martin DB9 as our test car for the week. Aston Martin is one of the most storied names in automotive history. Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, the company has a checkered past of fading in and out of bankruptcy and passing through a series of wealthy owners. The name was derived by combining one founder’s surname with the Aston Hill climb near Buckinghamshire, England. Today the British luxury sports car manufacturer is controlled by a joint venture company co-owned by a pair of Kuwaiti investment companies and English businessman John Sinders. Ford Motor Company owned the company from 1994 until 2007 before selling it for $848 million, but hanging on to a $77 million stake.

Any James Bond aficionado will tell you that Aston Martin is 007’s preferred automobile. The car has been featured in many Bond films, which only served to heighten the Aston Martin mystique and appeal. Bond’s cinema love affair with the car started in Goldfinger (1964) when he drove a silver DB5 and continued in Thunderball (1965) and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), then later in GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). After an interlude with Lotus cars, Bond returned to Aston Martin and drove a Volante and a Vantage in The Living Daylights (1987), and a Vanquish in Die Another Day (2002). In Casino Royale (2006), he drives the classic DB5, which becomes his personal vehicle after winning a poker game, and the new DBS in the latest Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. Our test car, a sleek and beautiful charcoal gray DB9 (The initials honor David Brown, who bought the company in 1947 and guided it until 1972, when it again went through a series of new owners.) is one of the best selling Aston Martins ever, with more than 10,000 sold around the world since its introduction in 2003. For 2009, the DB9 retains its classic design, but includes updates in both per-

formance and dynamics. The DB9 is perfectly proportioned, with a long hood and two-seat cabin that create a recognizable silhouette with short front and rear overhangs. A wide track pushes out the rear wheels and enhances the design and styling. Under the hood, there’s a 6.0 liter 470 bhp (20 more horses than last year) quadcam 32-valve engine mated to a refined automatic transmission that has a new hydraulic control unit for quicker and more precise low-speed gear changes and improved low speed maneuverability.

Downshifts in the Sports mode are also enhanced as a result of engine speed matching, which delivers smoother and more rapid gear changes in both paddle shift and drive mode. Price tag on our 2009 Aston Martin DB9 was $208,000.

Ford president sees industry change ahead, lower sales BY RON BEASLEY The president of Ford Motor Company was in Miami recently to help launch a new dealership — a rarity in these troubled economic times. While here, he told a roundtable discussion with Miami’s automotive press that his industry would undergo radical change in the coming years and see sharply lower sales. Mark Fields, Ford president for North and South America, was in Miami for the grand opening of the new Gus Machado of Kendall Ford dealership, and while sounding an optimistic note about his company’s future, admitted that it was going to be a tough row to hoe in the foreseeable future. “For most of the decade, we’ve been running at 16-17 million units of sales on an annual basis,” he said. “This year we’re running at about 10 to 10-and-a-half million units, so that gives you an indication of how revenues have fallen off for everybody. I think we’ll recalibrate what a healthy industry is going forward. “Will it be 13 million? Will it be 15 million? Will it be plus or minus fivetenths on that? I don’t know, but I do believe that in the next number of years it will be below 16 or 17 million units,” he added. Fields said much of the reason for the decline in auto sales was because of the disappearance of easy credit for consumers. “A lot of people used their houses as an ATM machine,” he said. “They take home equity loans out and buy an extra car, or rather than get a new car every four years they get one every two years. So I do think that will tamp down the industry. “And, cars are lasting longer now; better quality. In our case, our quality is among the best in the business and our

warranty costs have dropped dramatically, which means that customers don’t have to come into the dealership to get their vehicles fixed as often, if even at all.” Fields noted that Ford, unlike Chrysler and General Motors, did not accept any federal bailout money and the company has no intentions of taking federal funds in the future. “We are very much committed that we have no plans to take any emergency taxpayer money, based on our assumptions,” he said. “We’ve taken a lot of decisive action over the last couple of years, but mainly over the last six months, around debt reduction and modifying the contract with the UAW. We have sufficient liquidity to not only meet the needs of the business, but also to continue to invest in the products.” Fields agreed that Ford has benefited from the decision not to accept federal bailout money. “We’re hearing from our dealers that customers are coming into their showrooms, customers they haven’t seen before,” he said. “They’re saying that ‘we like the fact that you guys are pulling yourselves up by your own bootstraps and not taking any of the taxpayers’ money.’ At first they’re coming because of our products, but the feedback is that they’re a little bit concerned about some of our domestic competitors. The good news is that six out of the last seven months our retail market share is up. “Our first quarter results, we still were in a loss position, which isn’t acceptable to us; but, nonetheless, versus the fourth quarter, it’s a big improvement. So, we’re just keeping our nose to the grindstone.” Fields said Ford was committed to developing new technology and bringing new automotive product to the American consumer. He pointed to the

recent announcement of a $550 million conversion of a Michigan plant to build an electric vehicle. “That was a plant that used to build our Expedition and our Lincoln Navigator, our big SUVs,” he said. “We’re converting it to build our next generation Focus, a smaller, more fuelefficient car, and a battery-electrified Focus, our first full electric vehicle, and we’re coming out with that in 2011.” Fields said the Focus electric car will have a 100-mile range, making it an ideal car for people who commute less than 100 miles a day. However, he said Ford is not pinning all of its hopes on the Focus. “We’re not waiting until 2011,” he said. “We just doubled our offerings of hybrid vehicles; we have the Escape Hybrid and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid in the marketplace right now and we’ve just launched the Fusion

Hybrid and the Mercury Milan Hybrid, and we’re also going to introduce, in 2012, a plug-in hybrid as well. So, gaselectric hybrid, full battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, we feel we have a really strong approach towards alternative powertrain technology for customers to choose from.” Fields conceded that Ford may not have met consumer expectations with past products, but he said future vehicles would live up to their billing. “We realize that in the past we probably disappointed some customers and that residue is still out there to one degree or another,” he said. “That’s why we’ve been so disciplined in making sure that we continue to invest in new product and in better and better quality, because that’s the best evidence, the best foot forward you can put towards changing that perception.”
