Cutler Bay SERVING SOUTH DADE

SEPTEMBER 22, 2009

Diego family, scholarship winner acknowledged by council BY GARY ALAN RUSE he Cutler Bay Town Council formally acknowledged a member of the Diego family for his contributions to the community. It also recognized a college student and resident who won a scholarship presented annually by the Diego family. During the Aug. 19 council meeting, Keith Diego was presented with a proclamation from the Town of Cutler Bay for his work with Miami Southridge High School over the past four years. Keith Diego graduated from Southridge in 1986. Also attending the council meeting was Samantha Gholar of Florida State University, who is this year’s “Diego Family Spartan Scholarship Award” winner. The one year $2,500 award is presented each year to recognize one Southridge student who exhibits the Spartan Spirit and “to help encourage and assist them in their efforts when leaving home for a well-rounded college experience.” The scholarship was created by the Diego family, whose members are Southridge alumni. The criteria for the award include excellence in academics, dedication to community service and well-rounded participation in extracurricular activities. The recipient also must be attending a four-year college outside of the tri-county area. Samantha Gholar graduated in the top 5 percent of her class, is a member of numerous honor societies and volunteers with her church and other local charities in Cutler Bay. Gholar also was honored recently by the Greater Miami Athletic Conference Boys’ Basketball Officials Association along with three other athletes.

Residents reminded to properly dispose of fluorescent bulbs

T

BY FRANK CALDERON ith more Miami-Dade residents purchasing and using fluorescent light bulbs at home to save electricity and help the environment, the Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) reminds residents of the importance of proper disposal once their bulbs stop working. “Fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, which should be kept out of the environment,” said Solid Waste director Kathleen Woods-Richardson. “For that reason, they should be protected from breaking and they should not be thrown out with the garbage or put into the recycling cart.” Residents should take old, unbroken fluorescent bulbs — both the coiled compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and the long-tube type fluorescents — to one of DSWM’s permanent Home Chemical Collection Centers for disposal, Woods-Richardson said.

Labor Day weekend spent cleaning debris from canal Phillip Wellons (left) and Domenick Crapello from Cutler Bay spent their Labor Day weekend cleaning trash from the C-1 canal, better known as the Bel Aire Canal, from Franjo Road to Caribbean Boulevard. They removed enough human-generated debris — which included plastic bottles and bags, beer cans, glass bottles and other trash — to fill three large trashcans. They also removed two mattresses from the canal.
