ld Spanish Village, inspired by the vision of Coral Gables founder George Merrick, recently hosted a festive holiday celebration for the Master Brokers Forum that included the inauguration of the Old Spanish Village grand archway, Coral Gables’ first new entrance since the 1920s. The colorful event featured a cocktail reception and formal dinner. Guests, including members of the Miami Master Brokers Forum and Coral Gables Mayor
Don Slesnick, were greeted by costumed Spanish guards true to the theme of the mixed-use development, and were serenaded by carolers. Alicia Cervera Lamadrid of Related Cervera Realty Services, chair of the Master Brokers Forum and exclusive broker for Old Spanish Village, addressed the crowd followed by a presentation of Old Spanish Village and the introduction of the broker incentive program. Our vision is that every young person will find a pathway to prosperity. NFTE aims to educate young people, many of whom struggle in school, in the workings of our economy, what place they can have in it, and how they can access and create opportunities to help improve their lives. NFTE South Florida opened its program office on January 1, 2006 and have since trained 87 teachers and touched the lives of over 7,000 students, with over 3,000 students served this year alone. Q&A 1) What’s your favorite par t of your job? As the Volunteer Manager, my primary responsibility is to get individuals and corporations involved in the NFTE program as guest speakers and mentors in the classrooms and as judges for our business plan competitions. My favorite part is meeting new people and having the opportunity to help them get involved in the community through volunteerism and service. 2) Name one thing that you wish oth-
ers knew about your business and/or industr y? As the second largest NFTE program office in the country, we have over 3,000 students currently enrolled in our program. Our volunteers are an integral part of the success of our program. I’d like people to know that we have a range of short- and long-term volunteer opportunities for both college student and adults. College students can help NFTE students with their business plans in the classrooms. Adults can impact the lives of many kids by volunteering with NFTE as guest speakers discussing specific business topics such as website design, accounting, product development, and branding as well as overall topics such as networking and professionalism. 3) What was your ver y first job and how has it af fected your business style today? My first job was as a Sandwich Artist at Subway. Working in the service industry taught me how important customer service and listening are. I strive to represent my company in a friendly and professional manner. In my position, this translates to providing NFTE volunteers with positive volunteer experiences and NFTE students with positive learning experiences. 4) What of fice gadget could you not live without and why? I couldn’t live without my Blackberry. It helps me stay organized. 5) Where’s your favorite place to have a lunch meeting and why? Novecento. Junior OB honors some talented young writers Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Books & Books hosted the Junior Orange Bowl Creative Writing Award ceremony on Jan. 3. This competition, sponsored by the South Florida Writers Association (SFWA), uncovers some uniquely talented young writers and this year’s competition, chaired again by Connie Goodman-Milone, was no exception. Family, friends, teachers, JOBC members and local writers enjoyed refreshments before sitting down for best part of the program. The 2009 winner, Wendy Ser ra, read her essay, “Silent Night,” aloud to an audience captivated by the maturity and beauty of her piece. Serra was awarded several gifts including a $100 check from the SFWA. Serra, a student at Miami Lakes Middle School, was encouraged to enter the competition by her teacher, Tracie Pullum, who also was recognized and awarded some gifts of thanks. Others receiving recognition and checks were Alexis Lauda, St. Timothy Parish School, who took second place, and Emily Raitan, Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy, who captured third place. This annual competition is open to eighth grade students from MiamiDade County. Look for the winning essay on the JOBC website and in SFWA’s Author’s Voice. The week prior to this event, the Junior Orange Bowl was busy wrapping up its International Golf Invitational and producing its 60th Annual JOBC Parade, “Moon Over Miami.” While volunteers handed out helium filled balloons thanking Miami Children’s Hospital for its support to the crowd, VIP’s enjoyed a lovely reception at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Among the many guests were Haytt’s Gabe Castrillon and Tyler Or wig , Mayor Don and Jeannett Slesnick, past presidents Rev. Ar nie Per r y, Eunice Per r y, Robbie DiPietro, Val Macor and Carolyn Voigt, to mention a few. After enjoying a beautiful buffet provided by the Hyatt, the crowd was transported, courtesy of Super Shuttle, to the grandstand area across from City Hall where they enjoyed one of South
Florida’s best parades featuring the youth of the world. While Obie, the Orange Bowl Mascot, was the grand marshal, the parade also was honored to have Channel 10’s Laurie Jennings as its honorary grand marshal. Jennings rode in a convertible with her twin boys dressed in Santa hats, and they could not have been more adorable. In other news, Coral Gables Rotarians kicked off the New Year with their traditional Moose Milk Party at the lovely home of Bob and Cindy Trescott. While Bob Trescott and fellow Rotarian Sally Baumgartner prepared the Moose Milk, a concoction of ice cream and gin, members arrived with all sorts of great covered dishes that made for a fabulous buffet and great way to kick off the new year. Among the many attending the affair were Yoli and Fred Woodbridge, Jo Burke , Coral Gables Commissioner Ralph Cabrera and Jodi Cabrera, Br uce and Janie Kerestes, Manny Mares, Lynn Mitchell, Lan and Marie Rose NghiemPhu, Bill and Rita Oates, Dr. Patricia P a d r i n a s , D a v i d O r tiz , E l i z a b e t h Silver man, Chris Zoller and John Bur ns. The BCS National Championship Football Game was every bit as much fun and exciting as promised. With the biggest crowd ever to attend a game at Dolphin Stadium, hundreds of fans who could not get tickets actually tailgated in the stadium parking lot and watched from satellite TVs. For all the Gator fans there, it might as well been at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville; although, the Sooners were the “home” team for the game. Former Heisman Trophy winners were recognized prior to kickoff adding to a VIP list that even included President Bill Clinton. The security seemed to be exceptionally tight and, of course, seeing President Clinton on Jumbotron answered that question for many. This writer spent the pre-game hours tailgating with half of South Florida where Gators and Sooners enjoyed a picture perfect day for an outdoor party. Among the crowd tailgating in the East parking lot were Steve Beiley, chair of the Community Foundation of Pinecrest; Coral Gables Commissioner Chip Withers with wife, Cindy, and daughter, Ashley; 2008 Rotary Group Study Exchange member Chris Cof fey, and Pinecrest Councilmember Jef f Cutler. On Jan. 11, Gators gathered at Florida Field, “The Swamp,” to party with the team and witness the unveiling of the SEC Championship and 2008 National Championship banners during a ceremony that honored those

responsible for the winning football program. Orange Bowl president and University of Florida alum Danny Ponce was on hand to present the crystal football trophy to Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer. In other news, Abigail Myeress, who heads up the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s literacy program, Project LEAD (Literacy for Every Adult in Dade) was the guest speaker at the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club meeting on Jan 7. Myeress shared some startling statistics regarding illiteracy here in our own backyard and spoke about the program — what it accomplishes in the Miami-Dade community, what it entails, and the time commitment it requires, tutoring location specifics. Those interested in learning more about this program may call Myeress at 305-375-5323 or visit the website at <www.mdpls.org/services/outreach/lead. asp#1>. County helping property owners apply for 2009 tax exemptions BY PATRICK SMIKLE The Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser’s Office is undertaking a number of measures to help property owners apply for property tax exemptions during the 2009 application period, which continues through Monday, Mar. 2. Throughout the period the Property Appraiser will operate satellite offices across the county. Staff will be available at these sites to receive applications, to assist property owners in completing the applications and to provide general information about the various exemptions, which Florida law allows. Through Mar. 2, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, applications can be filed at the Stephen P. Clark Center (Ground Floor Lobby), 111 NW First St., Downtown Miami, and the South Dade Government Center (Second Floor), 10710 SW 211 St., Cutler Bay. The South Dade Government Center also will be open on Saturday, Feb. 7, 9 a.m.-noon. In addition, applications can be filed at the Miami-Dade Permitting and Inspection Center (First Floor), 11805 SW 26 St., 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, through Feb. 20. All offices will be closed on county observed public holidays: Monday, Jan. 19, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, and Monday, Feb. 16, President’s Day. The Property Appraiser recently mailed courtesy Homestead Exemption application forms and return envelopes to new 2008 homeowners in Miami-Dade. EXEMPTIONS Exemption Renewal Receipts also were sent to more than 450,000 MiamiDade residents who currently benefit from a Homestead Exemption. These Renewal Receipts serve as a reminder to homeowners that they have a responsibility to report to the Property
Appraiser any changes that could affect the status of the exemption. Any change such as all or part of the property being rented, the owner moving out, or the property no longer being his/her permanent residence, must be reported to the Property Appraiser by following the instructions on the receipt. SENIORS Renewal application forms and return envelopes also have been mailed to the 46,000 property owners who benefited from the Senior Citizens’ Exemption last year, reminding them of the requirement that they reapply annually for this benefit. To qualify for the Senior Citizens’ Exemption a homeowner must be over 65 as of Jan. 1, have a Homestead Exemption and meet the income requirement. Under Florida law homeowners have until Mar. 2 to apply for property tax exemptions. Homeowners who miss the deadline can file a late application but only after paying a $15 non-refundable fee to the Value Adjustment Board. BUSINESSES Similarly, businesses are receiving forms and notices. Letters were sent recently to 30,000 businesses reminding them of the requirement to file a Tangible Personal Property (TPP) tax return by Apr. 1. Another 80,000 business operators were scheduled to receive reminders about renewing their $25,000 TPP exemption. For more information about these notices, business operators should call 786-331-5376. For a list of the satellite offices and their operating hours, or for other general information about the 2009 application period, property owners and business operators should call 786-3315321 or visit the Property Appraiser’s website at <www.miamidade.gov/pa>.

VILLAGE, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Spanish Village entrance — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — and an address by historian Arva Moore Parks. “Here you will recognize beauty, outstanding architecture, consummate expressiveness of art — structural strength and militant challenging permanency,” Parks said. Now under construction, the $350 million “new urbanism” development evokes the aesthetics of ancient Spanish towns yet is an entirely modern community, with hurricane-ready building materials and structural components. When complete, Old Spanish Village, designed by Jorge L. Hernandez Architect PA, will span three city blocks on seven acres just south of Miracle Mile and adjacent to Ponce Circle. The Villas comprise three- and fourbedroom town-mansions priced from $1.5 million. They will include private rooftop terraces, private elevators, twocar garages, a butler’s pantry and a separate laundry room.
El Prado, the first of the mid-rise condominiums, will include a landscaped pool with deck and intimate park area, professional fitness center, common areas, and valet parking. The separately owned Ponce de Leon Towers, which are being built by Allen Morris Company, has signed its first tenant: New York-based Rockefeller Group Business Centers. Ponce Circle Developers is a joint venture between racing-promotion legend Ralph Sanchez and prominent regional development firm Mas Group. The Master Brokers Forum is a networking organization comprised of South Florida’s top residential real estate professionals. Membership is limited to the region’s most successful real estate professionals, and is by invitation only. For more information, visit online at <www.masterbrokersforum.com>. For information on sales, call sales director Nancy Iliffe at 305-444-1717.
LAPSLEY, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– another high on the list. As a seemingly full-time club woman and volunteer, Lapsley has tackled a variety of jobs including working for Mackle Brothers (Deltona Corp.) as payroll and insurance supervisor; Greenbrier Construction; Young Stovall & Company in accounting, and her husband’s CPA firm. Of course, the mystery is how she has time for anything other than her volunteer activities. For two decades as her sons were growing up, Lapsley was very active at Plymouth Congregational Church and served as a member of its board of directors. She was an active member of the Women’s Cancer Association’s Barton-Ravlin Chapter for 12 years and Lamda Mu for seven years. For the past 23 years, Lapsley has been an active member of Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club. Her leadership skills have been a blessing to the organizations in which she has volunteered. She served as president of the Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club for five terms and then as first vice president and treasurer of both the GFWC Coral
Gables Woman’s Club and the Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club before they merged to become one club. For many years, Lapsley also was chair of the CGJWC’s major fundraiser, “Cabaret,” for the Clubs’ May Van Sickle Children Dental Clinic. Operated as a free clinic, it makes the job of club president like that of a corporate executive with three businesses to run: dental clinic operations, club house rental and service organization. Working with a dedicated board, Lapsley did all three without missing a beat and with the full support of a loving family. On a state level, Lapsley has served as the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs district director and junior district director. While Lapsley enjoys travel, reading, cooking, decorating, and spending time with family and friends, she continues to give freely of her time to so many projects, from Smart Ride and Relay for Life, and, if the Coral Gables Woman’s Club is involved, you can bet Lapsley is there helping out and generously donating her time.

OXXO Care Cleaners in Gables convenient and eco-friendly BY LEE STEPHENS Anyone who has ever rushed to a dry cleaner to pick up a garment needed for that evening, only to find the place closed, will appreciate one of the unique services OXXO Care Cleaners provides: The environmentally friendly dry cleaner, located at the Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, offers customers convenient 24-hour pickup and drop off of clothing, seven days a week. OXXO’s ATM-style pickup after-hours window is easy to use, with the aid of a preregistered card, much like a bankcard. The card goes in, the specific order is automatically staged, the door opens, and the customer takes the order and receipt. OXXO customers pre-register and provide credit card information, making the procedure quick and effortless — whether it’s during work hours or after hours. The bright, spotless, open OXXO site — located just steps from the busy intersection of LeJeune Road (SW 42nd Avenue) and Bird Road (SW 40th Street) — beckons customers inside to experience the friendly, efficient service. OXXO, one of the world’s leading global environmentally conscious care cleaning providers, is widely known for its spe-
cial laundering system, Green Earth. Its gentle cleansing substance — liquid silicone, made from natural sand — does not harm the environment, the customers, the garments or the cleaning staff. Green Earth cleaning solutions, developed by Procter & Gamble and General Electric, involves no harsh petrochemicals that can damage garments and require special disposal. Green Earth liquid silicone, which is chemically inert, gently moves through the dirt and oil, leaving fabrics feeling softer, smelling fresher and lasting longer. Colors don’t fade, whites don’t turn yellow or gray, and fabrics don’t shrink with Green Earth. Even beaded garments, cashmere, silk and other delicate fabrics are safe using this method of dry cleaning. OXXO uses European-style garmentcare equipment, and specially trained staff iron every article of clothing by hand. OXXO does not use the usual industrial boilers or steam presses, opting instead for independently heated systems and special Italian pressing techniques, for longer fabric life and cleaner air inside each site. OXXO at the Village of Merrick Park provides alterations, special care for treasured clothing such as wedding or confir-

mation dresses, and stain treatment. They also clean comforters, carpets, cushions, pillows and stuffed dolls. “When I moved to Miami in 2005, I was looking for a franchise. My partners and I met with OXXO president and CEO Salomon Mishaan, and learned about the revolutionary OXXO Care Cleaners and its convenient, 24/7 boutique style and environmentally friendly cleaning system,” said Roland Haiek, owner/franchisee of the OXXO Care Cleaners in the Village of Merrick Park. “We started the process immediately to open the branch at the Village of Merrick Park. I wanted to be involved in a business that had identified precisely what people want, and provide it to them. OXXO certainly fits that bill.” Haiek, a franchisee since June 2005, opened the Village of Merrick Park site in October 2006. “Many of our customers live, shop, work or dine in and around the elegant Village of Merrick Park, but I want others in the area to know that we are there, and that we are different,” Haiek said. “The atmosphere is cheerful and very reassuring to customers. Even from the outside, you can see the entire operation — people ironing, pressing shirts, all the immaculate cleaning equipment. Once you are inside, you find the air fresh, cool and clean, with no toxic chemical odor.” Haiek, who holds one of the earliest OXXO franchises in the area, interacts
regularly with other local OXXO franchisees, for mutual benefit. Haiek has taken a long journey across two continents to get to his current destination in Coral Gables. He has lived and worked in Venezuela and other places in South America, and in California and Florida in North America. Wherever he has lived, he has been committed and dedicated to environmentalism and sustainability. “I am committed to the green movement, and to having minimal impact on the environment, both personally and professionally,” he said. “So OXXO and I are a really good fit.” In Venezuela, Haiek earned his degree in mass communication and founded an audio-visual company that created multimedia presentations for corporations and institutions. In 1981, he moved to the U.S. and completed his master’s degree in fine arts and cinema at the University of Southern California. He has worked with many international producers of feature films and commercials, including Steven Spielberg, executive producer, on Arachnophobia. He is a member of the Business Referral Group, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and other networking organizations, to inform others about the benefits of the OXXO dry cleaning system and build his business. Haiek’s OXXO Cleaners LLC is located at 324 Altara Ave., Coral Gables. For more information or to set up an account, call 305-441-2996.

"Something about the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man". --Winston Churchill They’re big, expensive and they eat a lot. So why do kids long for a pony? Dreams of freedom? Riding into the sunset? The thrill of speed and notion of a perfect partnership? Mastery of so much power? Patience and courage, learned by confronting a jump as we focus and persevere, builds confidence that carries over into daily life. It promotes overcoming of fears and increases the ability to deal constructively with difficult people. Tommy, six years old and in love with the idea of horses, until confronted with their actual size, said, “I don’t want to run. I don’t want to go fast.” We dealt with his fears of speed and falling through balance and steering exercises while standing still. Trotting has become his favorite exercise and Tigger is his new best friend. Overcoming fears will give him courage to make friends in school and the world, as well. Through relationship with non-verbal, non-human partners, we can learn much about ourselves: to handle frustration, distraction and fear, as well as separating our needs from those of our partners. Oscar, a small-business owner and former military, is self-critical and intense. He doesn’t drink or
smoke or go dancing so riding is his pleasure. Verdy is a sweet and willing but also intense. They are learning to relax, to be soft with one another. Lately, Oscar has been thrilled as he senses which leg is under him, to control Verdy with his weight rather than pulling on the reins, and with the immense power and tranquility when Verdy responds unhampered by tension from his rider. Success leads to success, in the arena and on the trail, and ultimately in his daily life. Riding enhances physical strength, balance and flexibility. Many riding students are also dancers, runners, or practitioners of yoga and the martial arts. It can ease the process of birthing children since some of the same muscles are involved. Many women can ride up until the last month of pregnancy. Equestrian therapies include hippo-therapy, (physical therapy on a horse), and horseassisted psychotherapy which aids in increasing self awareness and psychological change. Therapeutic riding is a method for teaching horsemanship to students with handicaps. A cerebral palsy patient who rode from the age of five to seventeen progressed from needing an assistant to hold him on the horse, to riding independently with a leader nearby just
for insurance purposes. His head control, speech and gestures became clearer, and he grew to be a spokesman for his therapeutic riding program. Watching the Olympics demonstrates that age is no bar to this sport. The oldest competitor is 62, followed by Karen O’Connor, 50, on the eventing team. Some children gravitate to horses from their earliest months, and may begin riding lessons at three.
Horseback sports are life-long tools for health, growth and peace. Happy Riding! Thumbs Up Riding School is owned and operated by Kami Landy. She has 30 years experience riding and teaching in Michigan and Miami. She can be reached at: 305781-3882 and/or horsecamp@fastmail.fm or kami@hotmail.com.

Boys & Girls Clubs receives grant to help kids with math, science BY DESERAE E. DEL CAMPO

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, which has been serving the youth in the community since 1940 and serves more than 13,000 boys and girls every year, has announced it will receive a $50,000 Innovation Generation grant from the Motorola Foundation. The funds will be used for the Learning Today Smart Tutor Program. The Motorola Foundation’s Innovation Generation grant program seeks to spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and to help develop critical-thinking skills for the long term. Providing $4 million to K-12 programs across the U.S. in 2008, the initiative supports handson, innovative after-school programs, science and math clubs, teacher training and mentoring programs. “The funds will enable us to provide children with a computer-based academic enhancement program, which will hopefully improve their academic learning and retention,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, executive director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “This grant is a great source of assistance for our Clubs.” The Learning Today Smart Tutor Program will provide researchedbased, online instructional program and training in clubs in Miami-Dade. It will consist of university science faculty providing hands-on, inquirybased science activities and training
at all four clubs, as well as external evaluation through an ongoing assessment to ensure the program’s fidelity, and provide for program adjustments and enhancements. The program is further proof of how local initiatives can have a global impact. U.S. student achievement in STEM is lagging compared to the rest of the world. Evaluated against international competition, fourthgrade students score similarly, but by the time they reach 12th grade, U.S. students fall near the bottom in math and science. Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade is working with Motorola to overturn this trend. “By showing students the realworld applications of concepts they learn in the classroom, Innovation Generation programs open their eyes to possibilities,” said Eileen Sweeney, director of the Motorola Foundation. “Programs like Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade develop students’ confidence and skills to succeed in a sophisticated world and a dynamic and competitive global marketplace.” Since 2000, the Motorola Foundation has contributed more than $35 million to education initiatives with a focus on STEM. For more information on the Innovation Generation grant program visit online at <www.motorola.com/giving>. For additional information on the Learning Today Smart Tutor Program visit <www.bgcmia.org>.

How to Select a Hearing Aid BY CURT HAGEDORN If you remember your grandfather or other relative with a box about the size of a transistor radio in their pocket with a wire running to an earplug, hearing aids have changed a lot since then. With the rise of digitization and computerization, hearing aids have become ever smaller, and more effective – in fact, like contact lenses, there are now even disposable models. However, unless you’re the kind of person who picks out a pair of reading glasses by trial and error at the local drugstore, you should really first consult with your physician and/or audiologist to make sure that you’re getting the proper hearing aid for you – and to make sure that your hearing loss isn’t cause by some other underlying problem. Also, since hearing can change over time, it’s important that you have a relationship with a professional that can help you analyze problems and make adjustments over time as you break in the device and learn how to use it over the long term. A hearing professional will do a variety of tests covering the full range of sounds and frequencies you may need assistance or have trouble hearing. What are called tone tests or pure tone tests measure the kind of hearing loss you might have. Speech recognition tests measure the threshold of volume where you can hear and understand speech. Finally, impedance tests help the audiologist understand the functioning of your middle ear in your overall hearing profile. Once these tests are completed, you can expect to be presented with the results of what is called “audiogram,” which will tell you if there is any variation in hearing between your right or left ears, your total level of hearing loss, and at what levels or frequencies you hear best. Your potential hearing aid will then be adjusted based upon these results. There are a number of different kinds of hearing aids available, not only in their operation but also how they’re worn. Conventional hearings aids pretty much are based upon the same “transistor radio” technology of your grandfather’s hearing aids. They have an analog microphone and amplifier, and a man-

ual “volume” adjustment. The manufacturer or hearing professional can make other adjustments. Though most hearing aids are now ‘in ear’ models, these can be somewhat larger and more obtrusive. The major advantage to this type of hearing aid is cost usually from $300 to under $1,000, and if your hearing loss is minor, specific to only one ear or only necessary in certain situations, say, at theatre or sporting events, an analog aid might be an adequate choice. Computer programmable and digital hearing aids offer greater adjustability to match the specific losses outlined on your audiogram, can be customized for each individual ear, and depending upon the kind and style you get, can be almost invisible “completely in the ear canal” models to “behind the ear” models that have certain advantages of amplification and battery life and size. By far the most popular are those which are almost completely invisible to the casual observer, though they do have some significant disadvantages in terms of not being able to accommodate major hearing loss, as well as reliability problems and just the sheer problem of say, changing a battery in something so small that is often used by the elderly. So, one of the slightly larger “in the ear canal” or “in the ear” models might make more sense for you in terms of the trade off between cosmetic appearance and performance. Expect to pay from two to three thousand dollars or more for a quality in the ear model. Programmable features allow you to set your hearing aid for different listening environments – say “in church” or “watching television at home” – different aids offer different numbers of channels and feature. Finally there are disposable hearing aids that are usually analog models for light to moderate hearing loss. Like disposable contact lenses or those drug store reading glasses, these models can represent a significant cost savings at about $40 a piece for about a month or so of life defending upon use, are a good way to “try out” having a hearing aid in general, but are no substitute for a professional analysis of hearing loss and a permanent hearing aid solution. Purchasing a Hearing Aid You can purchase your hearing aid from either an audiologist, a nonphysician specialist with a degree in measurement and treatment of hearing impairment, or a hearing-aid dealer. Whether you use an audiologist or a hearing-aid dealer, you need someone who will work with you over several visits to find the right
hearing aid, teach you to use and maintain it and then be available to service it in the months and years to come. Following are a few additional steps you can take to find a reputable, skilled hearing-aid dealer or good audiologist. Avoid those who sell only one type or brand of hearing aid. No man-
ufacturer makes an aid that’s right for everyone. Make sure the hearing aid dispenser offers at least a 30-day trial period for the hearing aid and services the aids that he or she sells. Find out exactly what’s included in the price. Some dispensers charge separately for the hearing aid and the fitting; some will quote an all-in-one
price. Watch out for excessive and nonrefundable fees. Some hearing aid dispensers may charge a “restocking fee” or a “dispensing fee” analogous to the dealer surcharges added on to some new cars. Know whether the warranty is honored by the manufacturer or by the dispenser.

Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition features works by young artists BY MITCH SNOW Works by young artists representing the diversity that nourishes Miami’s expanding art scene will be on view at Miami Art Museum during the annual Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition from Jan. 25 to Feb. 15. Hundreds of Miami-Dade middle and high school students and their families will gather at Miami Art Museum on Sunday, Jan. 25, 1-4 p.m., for the exhibition opening in the museum’s Ne Work Gallery. Award winners, selected from approximately 200 works on view at the museum, will be honored by school district officials during a 3 p.m. ceremony. The Miami-Dade County Schools Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition is an annual display of artwork produced by Miami-Dade County high school and middle school students as part of the regional and national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Every year winners of the Miami-Dade awards compete on the national level in New York. Students from Miami-Dade County schools consistently rank among the top winners at the national level — setting records for the number of awards won by the students of a single school district. In 2008, students from MiamiDade won 28 national awards. “The annual Scholastic Art Awards exhibition is only one of the ways Miami Art Museum is working with Miami-Dade schools to encourage engagement in the arts as a way of improving academic achievement,” MAM director Terence Riley said.
“In an effort to help schools cope with the current economic situation, the museum has dropped fees for classes visiting the museum and for teachers attending our teacher workshops,” he said. “We continue to look for other ways to help students get here, as well as ways of getting art to students in the schools.” The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been conducted annually since 1923 to reward the creative achievements of students in grades 7-12 and to recognize excellence in teaching. The awards — the longest running, largest and most prestigious student recognition program in America — were established by Maurice R. Robinson, founder of Scholastic Inc. At the conclusion of this regional exhibition, top award-winning artworks are forwarded to the national program in New York City. Works of art and writing are submitted for the national jury process by 80 regions from across the United States. A distinguished panel of prominent artists, writers, and arts professionals selects the national awards. National awardees will be honored in New York. The Miami Art Museum, 101 W. Flagler St., is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; third Thursday of the month until 8:30 p.m.; closed Monday. Admission for MAM members, children under 12 and students (with valid ID) is free. Adults are $8, and seniors, $4. Free admission every second Saturday. Visit online at <www.miamiartmuseum.org>.

Free community sing-along coming to Kendall, Jan. 24 BY JENNA WARD Before there was karaoke, there were sing-alongs, where people sang together for fun, minus the bar tab and the cheesy oldies hits. Since 1997, Miami Children’s Chorus has been bringing this traditional form of entertainment — the sing-along, not karaoke — to neighborhoods throughout MiamiDade County, and hundreds turn up to join in the fun. The next sing-along, “All Together Now,” is Sunday, Jan. 24, 11:30 a.m.12:30 p.m., at the West Kendall Regional Library, 10201 Hammocks Blvd. Admission is free. Music director Timothy A. Sharp, who has been with the chorus for nearly 20 years, was inspired to start the program to show people how much fun
singing can be. Sharp, who leads the sing-alongs, emphasizes that no previous singing experience is required. “The sing-alongs are our gift to the community,” he said. “It’s rewarding to see families meet together with others from their neighborhood to share in the joy of making music. No pressure to sound great. Just have a good time.” Miami Children’s Chorus is comprised of 140 youth, ages 8-16, who participate in the sing-alongs. Neighborhood children who come to the event can meet the young choristers and learn about singing in a chorus. Miami Children’s Chorus was established in 1965 and hopes to build on its history of bringing outstanding choral music to the community by inspiring more people to sing in groups.

Ridgeline adds power, new look, more standard equipment Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Honda says there are 50 significant changes and new features to the 2009 Ridgeline pickup truck. Well, maybe so, but it still looks like the same old Ridgeline to me. Don’t get me wrong, the Ridgeline was a pretty edgy design for a pickup when it debuted as a 2006 model four years ago, so Honda designers would really have to extend themselves to make it stand out any more. The Honda press release says the Ridgeline has been “updated for 2009 with bolder styling” and that a trailer hitch is now standard equipment. It goes on to say that it “takes on a bolder look and feel with new exterior and interior styling along with a more powerful engine.” Well, it does have a more chiseled appearance thanks to the revisions to the grille and bumpers, and headlight and taillight color combinations. On the inside, there are some styling
updates, including revised three-dimensional dials, a new steering wheel design and enhanced controls, buttons and displays for the air conditioning, audio, cruise control and headlights. New technology features include a 115-volt power outlet on the RTL model, an MP3/auxiliary input jack on the RTS and RTL, and all audio systems become MP3/WMA compatible. New safety features include active front seat head restraints and daytime running lights. The composite cargo bed still will hold four-foot-wide sheets of plywood between the wheel wells and two new cargo tiedown points have been added for a total of eight. New premium features include Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use and a rear-view backup camera on RTL models equipped with the available satellite-linked navigation system. Carryover features include the spacious in-bed storage trunk that provides hidden dry and secure storage capable of storing luggage, toolboxes and coolers. Under the hood this year is a 250 hp 3.5-liter all-aluminum VTEC V-6 engine (15/20 mpg) mated to a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmis-

sion and a Variable Torque Management four-wheel drive system (VTM-4), all standard equipment. A fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension design in the rear contribute to a smooth ride and responsive handling. Standard equipment for towing includes the integrated tow hitch, transmission and oil coolers, heavy duty brakes, dual radiator fans and a wiring harness for a seven-pin trailer hook up.
Maximum recommended towing capacity is 5,000 pounds. Base prices on the 2009 Honda Ridgeline range from $28,000 for the RT model to $36,330 for the RTL with the navigation system.
