BY GLORIA BURNS Jerry Santeiro, is a 20-year resident of Coral Gables and already has made his mark on the City Beautiful. He is a born leader who has a masterful way of entertaining a crowd whether he is emceeing events or simply conducting a meeting, a reason he is much sought after by so many organizations. Santeiro was born in Havana, Cuba, but relocated to Miami in 1960, with his family. After graduating from Christopher Columbus High School and then Georgia Tech, where he earned a degree in JERRY SANTEIRO Industrial Engineering, Jerry joined Florida Power and Light Company as a field engineer. He swiftly moved through the management ranks until his departure in 1994 as manager of corporate and external affairs. During his time with FPL, he received his MBA from Florida International University and also represented FPL in Washington,

BY ROSALIND MOORE The City of Coral Gables proclaimed Jan. 13 as “Coral Gables Garden Club Day in Coral Gables” recognizing the organization, founded in 1925, for its dedication to the beautification of the city in addition to creating three striking municipal entrances as well as a statue of George E. Merrick in front of City Hall. Because George E. Merrick, founder and master developer of Coral Gables, wanted grand entrances that were unable to be completed because of the Great Depression, Betsy Adams, former club president and the driving force of the club’s Adopt-An Entrance Project, began the development for the new Coral Gables entrances.

Three beautiful entrances were dedicated in 1991, 1997 and 2008. They are located at Coral Way and Red Road, Miracle Mile and Douglas Road, Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Eighth Street. The George Merrick 12-foot bronze statue was dedicated in 2006. Adams and Coral Gables Garden Club president Donna Box accepted the Office of the Mayor Proclamation from Mayor Don Slesnick during a ceremony at City Hall. “I urge the citizens of Coral Gables to acknowledge and commend the Coral Gables Garden Club for their tremendous community pride, spirit and excellent performance that has provided significant beautification and historical enhancements to our City Beautiful,” Mayor Slesnick said.

South Miami Rotary elects new slate of officers Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Inauguration Day was the featured program for most everyone on January 20 and one of the best seats in town was at Carrabba’s lounge in South Miami where the South Miami Rotary Club met for their weekly luncheon. All agreed, President Obama certainly was the best featured speaker ever. Of course, sharing the historic day with fellow Rotarians made it all the more memorable. Following the ceremony, the Club addressed other matters, electing a new slate of officers for the coming year. The newly elected slate includes Pansy Graham, President 2009 – 2010; Doreen Reitneauer, President Elect; Bill Enright, Vice President; Kathy Miller Secretary; Fabio Fernandez, Sgt. of Arms; and David Jacobs, Treasurer, The board of directors to serve include Ellen Book Ed Fischer, Donna Gaines, Roy Gonas, Linda Kaplan, Mike Mills, Diana Phillips, and Don Streaker. Out of town and area Rotarians looking for a make up meeting are welcomed to join this group who meet at Carrabba’s in South Miami every Tuesday at noon. The Junior Orange Bowl brought hockey teams from as far away as Tampa and West Palm Beach to participant in their Second Annual JOBC Miami Little Toros Ice Hockey Tournament. An amazingly talented group of players ranging in age from as young as 5 years to 12 years of age made this a very competitive match up. Among the competitors were the Golden Wolves, from

Held January 16 through 19, at Kendall Ice Arena, this was the second year for the tournament, a very welcomed and relatively new addition to the Junior Orange Bowl festival of events. JOBC President Jim Borgmann and JOBC Administrative Director Mark Pidal credit the success of this event to Joe Tipone, Director, of the Miami Little Toros, and so many others such as Peter Burgess, a parent volunteer. As with most JOBC events, volunteers are the backbone of any event and the reason a small JOBC staff is able to manage what has become the “world’s largest youth festival” is because of that solid base. The Junior Orange Bowl Festival now has activities from as early as September and October through February. For young adults, the JOBC has become an enjoyable as well as excellent way to develop and strengthen leadership skills while meeting new people and helping a great non-profit organization. In other club news, on January 20th the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club hosted an event for the District 11 President’s Project Heifer International. Florida Federation of Women’s Club (FFWC) President, Linda Dennis joined by FFWC Past president and Project Chair, Charlyne Carruth, and seventy other women to enjoy a day that included a Silent & Live auction as well as a raffle for baskets donated from each club. Each club decorated a table with an animal, Heifers, sheep, elephants, honey bees, Ducks & geese. At the end of the day, Linda Dennis with presented with a check for $2,660.50, the total funds raised that day. Heifer International is an amazing organization that has a proven approach – almost 60 years in the making – to helping people obtain a sustainable source of food and income throughout the world in an effort to reduce world hunger. Old Spanish Village project progressing on schedule BY KARINA CASTRO Old Spanish Village, the $350 million “new urbanism” development in Coral Gables, is progressing steadily. The exterior structure of the first building, part of Phase I of The Villas, is complete. Underground utilities and underground infrastructure are 90 percent complete. Construction of Phase I began in April 2008 and the first of seven buildings in this phase will be complete in April. The Spanish-inspired grand archway, which serves as the village’s entry and symbolizes the realization of the vision of Coral Gables’ founder George Merrick, was inaugurated in December. Sales also are on target. To date, approximately 40 percent of the luxury units in the 49-residence El Prado, part of Phase II, have been reserved. Construction on El Prado will begin in the third quarter of 2009. “All the fundamentals are in place to deliver a successful development,” said Ralph Sanchez, president of Ponce Circle Developers. “We attribute the positive reception to Old Spanish Village to the type of community we designed. We are creating an urban oasis in the midst of downtown with the finest and most high-end features and finishes.” Inspired by the vision of Merrick, Old Spanish Village will evoke the aesthetics of ancient Spanish

towns yet will be entirely modern, with hurricaneready building materials and structural components. The mixed-use community will span three city blocks on seven acres just south of Miracle Mile adjacent to Ponce Circle. The Villas comprise three- and four-bedroom town-mansions priced from $1.5 million. They will include private rooftop terraces, private elevators, two-car garages, a butler’s pantry and a separate laundry room. El Prado, the signature tower on Ponce de Leon, will include a landscaped pool with deck and intimate park area, professional fitness center, common areas, and valet parking. The separately owned Ponce de Leon Towers, which are being built by Allen Morris Company, has signed its first tenant: New York-based Rockefeller Group Business Centers. Ponce Circle Developers is a joint venture between racing-promotion legend Ralph Sanchez and prominent regional development firm Mas Group. "Something about the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man". --Winston Churchill Some of the most generous people I know have four legs. Most of my best life-lessons have been learned on the back of a horse: forgiveness, perseverance, when to strive and when to rest, problem solving, focus, and facing fears. When your daughter or son asks for riding lessons, consider what a great learning opportunity you are opening for them – lessons which will help them to become strong leaders, and cooperative companions throughout their lives. Why do I say that horses are generous, not merely obedient? Watch an old school horse accept the beginner's clumsy cues. How easy it would be to ignore them or dump them off. Sure, he will challenge her, but seldom to the point of danger. Over and over, they forgive our mistakes, even though those mistakes are made on their sensitive mouths and backs. Horses vary in their personalities as much as do humans. A good personality match, along with communication, are key in this relationship as in any other. But all horses have something to teach us. Some horses and riders are best suited to the independent problem solving of the horse, others to the speed and determination of jumping or the constant dialog of dressage. Learning to understand the needs and motivations of a horse, we may learn to know ourselves better. Horses have a lot to teach us about leadership and about following. Observe their body lan-

guage while at liberty, and you will see the dynamic relationships they maintain. Speak their language, and you can become a herd leader among your horses. Similar approaches might even work in our human environment. What happens when you approach a horse? First he tips an ear in your direction, swiveling to follow you. Having decided that you are not a threat he turns his head to look at you. If you reach for his nose, he might turn away, offering the shoulder- a public gesture, like a handshake. He's not sure about you, so he moves away, staying just out of reach, until he is hidden behind companions. The message he's giving you is, "I don't feel quite safe here". So you offer a treat and a pat to each of the other horses, and eventually your horse shoves his nose into your hand, looking for carrots. Offer the carrot, put the lead rope around his neck and then the halter over his head , and this moment of conversation is concluded as he obediently follows you back to the barn. Most of the time, horses are asking some simple questions; "Will it eat me?" "Can I eat it?" "Who's in charge here?" "Run now?" and my favorite, "What game are we playing?" When my horse swivels an ear, he is saying "is that a threat or something of interest?". Offering his shoulder, he says "I'm not sure I trust you yet." But offering his nose, he is thinking about food and feeling safe. Feelings slightly insecure, he moves away, but isn't triggered to flee. He belongs to a herd and they will protect him. When I become

part of the herd, he chooses me as leader and looks to me for comfort and direction. If he were to challenge my leadership by trying to crowd me, my body language, mimicking a horse, will be strong and definite in defining my space. We apply similar principles when riding, applying or releasing pressure, striving to be simple and clear in communication, taking a leadership role so the horse trusts us to choose direction and pace without question. The energy of the warm up sets the tone for the ride, and the horse replies, agreeing to the task at hand or needing encouragement to play along. Like a school teacher, we notice and remove distractions, tell our horse "focus on me, wait for

instruction, then begin." Mothers, daughters and grandmothers all delighted in the ambiance of Afternoon Tea served by the Fairchild volunteers at beautifully set tables, complete with fine china. The menu included scones, mini tea sandwiches, cookies and petit fours. Live music by local guitarist Rob Friedman enhanced the guests’ experience. The next Afternoon Tea at Fairchild will be the First Ladies Tea taking place on Feb. 22. Join Fairchild to salute the

First Ladies of the United States with tea and recipes including Martha Washington’s candy and Mary Todd Lincoln’s “Courting Cake” and patriotic tunes from guitarist Rob Friedman. Of course, he insists he is way too young to be a grandpa and yet he is. His baby granddaughter, Nina Isabella, born in May 2007, is too beautiful for words.

EXHIBIT, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– response to his wife’s diagnosis and treatment and her seven-year battle with ovarian cancer, but the art speaks to the struggles of anyone living with cancer. “Body image | body essence” explores the conflict between who I am and what I look like faced by women with ovarian cancer after its invasive surgery and follow-up treatments. The art addresses many aspects of changed self-image, both heavy and lighthearted. Serious issues of scarring, fatigue and fertility can be found in some pieces, but so can playful explorations of “chemo brain,” or hair that refuses to grow back the same as before. In the art, visitors will find a remarkable expression of one couple’s response to a life-threatening challenge that speaks to the universal human strengths of courage and survival. The final installation of the exhibition, Echo, serves as the icon for the NOCC’s

“Break the Silence” campaign by paying homage to the spirit of the many women living with and fighting ovarian cancer. The exhibit is on display at the College of Arts and Sciences Gallery, 1210 Stanford Dr. on the UM campus; hours are Tuesday-Saturday, noon-4 p.m., and Thursday, noon-7 p.m. There is no charge for admission to the exhibition, but donations will be accepted for ovarian cancer awareness and education. Since its inception in 1995, the NOCC has been committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer in communities across the country through education and support for women with ovarian cancer and their families. Before digging around your property, state law requires you call 8-1-1, a statewide, toll-free number, to have your utility lines professionally marked. You must call at least three business days before digging, excluding holidays, so underground utility lines can be located and marked—free of charge—before you begin your project.

If you smell gas, act quickly. Although natural gas pipeline incidents are extremely rare, these tips will help you identify a possible gas leak and know what to do. LOOK for blowing dirt or continued bubbling of standing water. LISTEN for a hissing or roaring sound near a natural gas appliance or line. SMELL for the distinctive rotten-egg scent of natural gas. Take action if you detect even a small amount of this odor. LEAVE the area IMMEDIATELY if you detect a natural gas leak. Don’t try to identify the source or stop the leak. BY MARIE GUMA-DIAZ Two hundred years after the birth of famed naturalist and father of the modern evolutionary theory, Charles Darwin, his ideas are still inspiring new forms of scientific and artistic innovation. Dr. Richard Milner, a physical and cultural anthropologist, author of the Encyclopedia of Evolution and regular contributor to Natural History magazine, has created a one-man musical performance, Charles Darwin: Live and in Concert, that is entertaining audiences the world over. New family show opens at zoo’s Amazon and Beyond BY CINDY CASTELBLANCO Miami Metrozoo’s new theme area Amazon and Beyond now features an exciting 20-minute interactive show called Quetzal’s World for children and families. With an original script, Quetzal’s World begins with a costumed storyteller who plays the role of the Quetzal, a resplendent, near-threatened bird that has been revered as sacred by the Aztecs and Mayans for centuries, and admired as a symbol of beauty and freedom. The audience is transported to a magical time and place through stories and songs where an ecological mystery has occurred. By helping to solve the mystery, audience members learn about tropical American ecology and animal adaptations. Quetzal’s World incorporates concepts such as predation, defense, and the theme of adaptation, all within the ethical context of conservation. The performance is followed by the opportunity for audience members to ask questions and handle props and animal biological artifacts. “Our main goal for Quetzal’s World is to create an innovative and engaging theater experience for family audiences,” said Nestor Rodriguez, Zoological Society of Florida president and CEO. “We wish to provide teachers and students with an interactive education program that will enliven their tropical American curriculum through exploration of that region’s cultures and wildlife. “We also want to enhance all audiences’ knowledge of the relationships among plants, animals and people, and the conservation issues that threaten the rich biodiversity of tropical America. We want to promote awareness that our individual actions can make a difference in conservation, and that collectively, we can make a big impact both here at home and in tropical America.” Quetzal’s World is performed twice daily, 10:30 and 11:15 a.m., on weekdays and at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. on weekends and holidays at Amazon and Beyond’s main stage. The show is made possible by a grant of $103,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library

Romance in a Can Film Fest coming to Miami BY BRUCE BOBBINS Carice van Houten — the acclaimed Dutch film star who is currently starring opposite Tom Cruise in the hit movie Valkyrie and who electrified audiences as the German Jewish resistance fighter Rachel Stein in the 2007 film Black Book — will be the special guest during the Third Annual “Romance in a Can” (RIAC) Film Festival, presented by Eurocinema, Feb. 6-15, at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the Greater Miami area. Twenty-one independent first-run foreign feature films — featuring such international stars as Van Houten, as well as Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, Giancarlo Giannini, Derek Jacobi, Tovah Feldshuh, and Irène Jacob, and representing 15 countries — will make their big screen premieres on U.S. soil during the 10-day event, the only festival of romantic films in the U.S. The program also will include a tribute to the legendary Polish director, writer and actor Krzysztof Kieslowski, and a short film competition for film students from Europe and Miami area high schools. The program opens at the tropical Art Deco Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach and closes at the legendary Barnacle State Park in Coconut Grove. RIAC — established by Red Chemistry Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of independent European filmmakers — pairs screenings of feature-length European films making their domestic debuts and the short film competition with an array of special events, while raising funds for youth arts programs. The award-winning short film will be purchased by Eurocinema for airing on its TV channel. Eurocinema is the first and only TV channel dedicated solely to pre-

senting foreign films to U.S. and North American audiences. It is available in some 25 million homes via Time Warner, Cablevision, Charter, DISH and DIRECTV, among other cable and satellite systems. Miami Civic Music Association launches its 2008-09 season BY ROBERT HAMILTON The Miami Civic Music Association will present the 11th Annual Piano Gala on Feb. 15, at 4 p.m., featuring pianists Rosalina G. Sackstein, Paul Posnak, Tian Ying and Dennis Kam. This and other Miami Civic Music Association concerts will be in Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Dr. on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of the composer and concert pianist Mana-Zucca, who was a prominent member of Miami’s music world for many years. Also appearing will be pianists Jose Ignacio Diaz Ysomar Granados, Laura Keith, Diana Limeres, Alejandro Mendez, Maria Beatriz Sellek, Leila Torres and Megan Walsh — all graduates from the Frost School of Music who are now performing professionally. Rosalina G. Sackstein and her daughter, flutist Rosy Sackstein, will perform a Mana-Zucca composition dedicated to her daughter. She and her grandchildren — Andrew, Matthew and Alina Roitstein, and Danielle and David Sackstein — will present a special arrangement of Eliseo Grenet’s Cuban classic, Drume Negrita. All proceeds from this concert will benefit the Rosalina G. Sackstein Piano Scholarship Fund at the Frost School of Music. Other programs for the season include: The Conjunto Iberico Cello Octet returns to the series with a performance on Sunday, Mar. 15, at 4 p.m. The group, conducted by Elias Arizcuren, is based in Amsterdam and is composed of eight young cellists from

around Europe. Their programs feature works by composers from Spain such as Turina, Rodrigo and Granados as well as pieces by contemporary composers who have written works especially for the Octet. This time they will be joined by mezzosoprano Elena Gragera from Spain. On Saturday, Mar. 28, at 8 p.m., pianist Paul Posnak from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami; Jules Eskin, principal cellist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Ethan Sloane, clarinet and professor of woodwinds at Boston University, will come together for an evening of chamber music. The trio’s performance at Festival Miami 2002 was praised by critics as one of the highlights of the event. Pianist Daniel Lessner will perform Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. Lessner, a Miami native now based in Los Angeles, was an audience favorite in his last recital for Civic two years ago. In addition to his performing career he is a successful composer for television and films. His recent South American tour received critical acclaim. Lessner performs frequently in the Los Angeles area. His April 2008 performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at Chapin Hall, Williams College was praised for “individuality” and “freshness of interpretation.” He was invited to return to South America in October 2008 to perform Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto at Teatro Oriente in Santiago, Chile. New year brings thoughts of love to Cauley Square BY SHERRY MILLER The New Year brings new vibrations that fill the air with love and especially at Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village in South Miami Dade County. The 10-acre historic railroad village site is the last of its type in the state of Florida and one of the last in the entire United States. “Visitors come from around the world to experience the history of this country here in the Village,” said Frances Varela, owner and operator of Cauley Square. “There’s just no place like it,” continued the petite business woman who has transformed and preserved the historic site from hurricane devastation to total refurbishment throughout the flowering grounds and lush tropical foliage. South Florida’s public television station, WLRN, recently showcased the property as one of the foremost attractions of the area. The cottages, grounds, historic red train caboose, statued fountains, patio’s and cobble-stoned pathways make unique, one-of-a-kind photographic backgrounds for brides, families, travelers or romantic couples. This Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14, from 6 to 10 p.m., both the Tea Room and the Village Chalet restaurants will be serving special menus by candlelight and roses with appropriate background music. Saab 9-3 lineup sees minor changes for 2009 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Saab 9-3 lineup was given a major exterior redesign in the 2008 model year and there is little visible change for 2009. The Saab 9-3 model range includes the 9-3 Sport Sedan, 9-3 SportCombi and 9-3 Convertible in 2.0T and Aero models. A new “Aero-look” exterior appearance package is an option for 2.0T Sport models, while other new enhancements include interior trim, roof rail and wheel changes, as well as new standard OnStar 8.0 hardware that enables Turn-by-Turn Navigation and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The Saab 9-3 models incorporate design cues of the Aero X Concept, including the powerful front end, larger grille with smaller side grilles and a semi-overwrapping hood. The headlights wrap around the fenders to the flanks and accommodate the

Xenon cornering headlamps (standard on the Aero), which adjust horizontally in conjunction with the steering for greater visibility. The headlight design and monochromatic doors and bumpers give the 9-3 a sleeker, cleaner and faster look. SportCombi models have a more aerodynamic roof-rail design, while matte chrome-finish roof rails are available on the Aero SportCombi. Sport Sedan buyers can choose an Aerotype appearance and performance package that includes dual bright-finish tailpipes, sport-bolstered seats, metallic interior decor, upgraded brakes, a sporttuned chassis and new sportier 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. All Aero FWD Convertibles and XWD-equipped 9-3 models have the new alloy wheels. Eighteeninch wheels with performance-rated tires are an option on Aero XWD models. Saab’s XWD (cross-wheel-drive) technology has been added as an option on the 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models and a more powerful 280 hp engine is standard on all V-6 Aero models. Originally available in 2008 only on the V-6-equipped Turbo X or Aero Sport Sedan and SportCombi models,

the Haldex Gen 4 XWD system gives more functionality to four-cylinder 2.0T (turbocharged) models. The 9-3 2.0T models equipped with XWD technology are available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and feature a more comfortfocused chassis setting. Saab’s XWD cross-wheel-drive is an active-on-demand system that is activated only when required, minimizing the impact on fuel economy while giving the car a sure-footed dynamic feel. It’s

designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability in all driving conditions. This all-wheel-drive system includes two innovative features: Pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels to optimize traction at the start, and an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential.
