Commission taps Salerno to fill city manager spot BY MARIA ROSA HIGGINS FALLON he Coral Gables City Commission voted on Tuesday, Mar. 10, to offer the position of city manager to Patrick G. Salerno. Salerno, a former manager of the City of Sunrise in Broward County for 17 years, obtained the support of the majority of the city commission and is to negotiate compensation and terms of employment during the coming weeks. “Ever since I was a student at the University of Miami, I have been a strong admirer of the city,” Salerno said in his introductory letter. “A key to my success as a manager has been my ability to bring a results-oriented and an entrepreneurial spirit to public sector operations. I wish to bring the same spirit of service to Coral Gables.” Salerno is credited with the success of attracting premier projects to the City of Sunrise, including the BankAtlantic Center, which elevated the Broward County municipality as a major entertainment-corporate-retail destination in Florida.

McLamore Outstanding Service Award is named after the co-founder of Burger King and former chair of the UM Board of Trustees. Jared Maddux, grandson of the late James W. McLamore, who currently serves as vice president and director of asset and liability management at Miami-based TotalBank, presented the award to this year’s recipient.

A role model for many women, Phillis Oeters has achieved what many may consider the impossible. Whatever role Oeters tackles — from mother to corporate executive to civic leader — she excels in all categories. A 19-year Coral Gables resident, Oeters is corporate vice president of Government and Community Relations for Baptist Health South Florida, which includes Baptist Hospital, PHILLIS OETERS South Miami Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Mariners Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital and several Baptist Outpatient Medical Plazas. Commerce Connection Think Locally – Act Globally BY MARK A. TROWBRIDGE President & CEO Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce

We live in a global economy where 96% of the market is outside the U.S. border. Given our unique position in South Florida, we are well poised to take advantage of our location in the United States, on the coast of Florida’s peninsula, and in close range to markets in Central and South America. Taking the lead and embracing this unique opportunity, the Chamber is developing several key opportunities for our businesses and our community. With the synergy of our location and the presence of nearly 200 multi-national companies based in Coral Gables, we are indeed poised for success. And, bolstered by our economic downturn, we must cast wider nets and develop new relationships to survive and thrive in 2009. This past week, I attended a briefing by King Juan Carlos of Spain on the many opportunities that exist between Florida and Spain, especially as it relates to biofuels and sustainable energy sources. Spain is the largest producer of solar energy in the world, and the third largest from wind energy. Governor Crist was in attendance at the summit, along with the Secretary of Commerce for Spain, and our new National Security Advisor, General James Jones. To select Florida, and Miami, as the U.S. location to host this historic business conference is directly attributable to our unique location and proven track record with international business and trade. With more than $400 million in direct trade between Florida and Spain annually, as well as nearly 400 Spanish companies located in our state, there is tremendous synergy and numerous opportunities. In recognition of this fact, the Chamber hosted our second annual International Business Forum earlier this month at Regions Bank. Sponsored by the Allen Morris Company, the Rockefeller Group and Intelsat, and supported by the South Florida Business Journal, Regions Bank and Whole

Foods Market, this program featured such global experts as Manny Mencia from Enterprise Florida, Dr. Tony Villamil from St. Thomas University, Leslie Schweitzer from the US Chamber of Commerce and Carmen GonzalezSanfeliu of Intelsat. The Forum was designed to help attendees explore how they can leverage key international market trends, while working to survive and thrive in the current economy. With practical tips on how to access the global marketplace, especially for small and mediumsized businesses, the forum is produced annually as a part of the Chamber’s international programming platform. Finally, the Chamber will travel to Colombia in April with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. With stops in Bogotá, Barranquilla and our sister city, Cartagena, we will seek to expand business opportunities in a country that has seen year-over-year double-digit GDP growth, controlled inflation, and an increasingly stable political environment. We will host meetings with the U.S. Embassy, businesses associated with the U.S. Commercial Service, as well as visit with government leaders in each city. If you are interested in traveling with us, please contact the Chamber for more information. Finally, as you travel along Ponce de León Boulevard each day this winter and spring, you will notice the flags of over 120 nations emblazoning each side of the street. This marquee program, Flags on Ponce, was created over 15 years ago by the Chamber in recognition of the international business that is done each day in our community. With the support of wonderful sponsors and the City of Coral Gables, this program continues to be a strong visual reminder of the numerous multinational businesses, consulate and trade offices that call Coral Gables home. We look forward to having you join us for some or all of our international programs in the coming month as we look beyond our borders in 2009 to develop new business and build a stronger community. See you next month in the business pages.

Bollywood comes to Gables for fundraising event Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Bollywood, India’s version of Hollywood, came alive in South Florida with the most extravagant and wild fundraiser of the year, “A Night in Bollywood.” The 1,000-plus guests attending the affair will attest that this was possibly the party of the decade for the Gables. Best of all, proceeds from the event will enable Sunil’s Home in India to construct a second story, buy furniture and provide medical treatment for dozens more orphans, rescuing them from the dangerous streets. Rod Hildebrandt, president of Hospice Advantage Inc., and Matthew Meehan, president of Consulting Solutions, are both on the board of Sunil’s Home and once again opened their home with its amazing backyard for an unbelievable evening. The site was magically transformed into party central with outdoor rooms erected fully furnished with curtains, sofas and pillows all carrying the theme throughout the vast patio/pool area. Several large screen televisions added to the excitement with dance scenes “a la Slumdog Millionaire” and videos about the Sunil’s orphanage running on and off all night. While last year’s first fundraiser featured an elephant, this year’s went way beyond that with dancers, contortionists, fire eaters, a live caged tiger and other small bands. A petting zoo with other animals from India, and even several Hookah

Lounges set under some of the tents added to the spectacular atmosphere that left guests in sensory overload and awe. Sunil’s Home board members were, of course, on hand helping Meehan and Hildebrandt with the affair including Carlos Osorio, president of Miami Photo Inc.; Lynn Bauer, president, Bauer Financial Group Inc.; Sandra Osorio, teacher, and Sunny Mullick, partner, Ruden McClosky Smith Schuster & Russell PA. Among the many event sponsors were Montague Rumley Group Morgan Stanley; All Care Medical Services, Berber Events, Southern Audio Visual, Catering the Event by Susan Bleemer and Mint Leaf Indian Brasserie. Meehan was credited with the orchestration of this extravaganza that took several months to plan. While no admission was charged, guests were encouraged to select a child to support or purchase items for the home from gift trees. While enjoying authentic Indian food, the crowd also had an opportunity to bid on more than 100 items in the silent auction. In fact, Rod auctioned off a week in his castle in Europe that got a $10,000 high bid from Connie Russell to the delight of the crowd and Sunil’s board. From India to the Philippines, this has been a busy week for many in South Florida. This past month Rotary District 6990 has been hosting five women and one man visiting as part of Rotary International’s Group Study Exchange while a group from South Florida was on a similar mission to Quezon City in the Philippines. Gables Rotarian Yoli Woodbridge has done a stellar job in coordinating the program for the district, scheduling job and club visits, homes for the GSE team and social activities as they traveled from place to place in a district that includes MiamiDade, Broward, Monroe counties and the Bahamas. One of the many social events held during their stay was a reception by the pool at the Biltmore Hotel hosted by Woodbridge to thank the local hosts and introduce them to their houseguests. In other non-profit news, several years ago David Evensky, in cooperation with Coral Gables Community Foundation, founded a program named “Youth4Tomorrow,” later renamed the “Motivated Youth Program.” With a goal of instilling in young people a sense of community responsibility, philanthropy and altruistic awareness, the program has done that and more as the University of Miami became actively involved. In order to further expand the scope of this program, Evensky used his 40th birthday celebration as the program’s first fundraiser. On Saturday, Feb. 21, hundreds gathered at Casa del Leone for a party that combined music, art, and fashion. Guests

Pictured at Sunil’s Home fundraiser are (lr) Sunny Mullick, Lynn Bauer, Hal Wanless, Carlos and Sandra Osorio, and Rod Hildebrandt.

were treated to a live concert by Pancara, an “Afro-Bolivian Rock” singer; an auction by Areca Whatmore; a fashion show by Timoteo Corelli Designs, and a raffle of fine Jewelry by Buchwald Jewelers. Student volunteers from the University of Miami-Butler Center for Volunteer Service & Leadership Development, assisted with the various activities. Event sponsors included Evensky & Katz, Buchwald Jewelers, Pancara, Timoteo Corelli Designs, Areca Whatmore, Kiran’s Creations, and Glam Events Inc. Proceeds from the event will be dispersed on Saturday, Mar. 28, through the Fourth Annual Motivated Youth Program, hosted by the University of Miami’s Butler School of Volunteerism and Leadership. Student participants from the University of Miami, Coral Gables High School, South Miami High School and Gulliver Preparatory will decide how much should be disbursed to this year’s community partners: Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, Make-aWish Foundation, Margaux’s Miracle Foundation, Shake-a-Leg, Kristi House,

Neat Stuff, Friendship Circle, Kids Hope United Bowl, Lighthouse for the Blind, City Year and the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet. For sponsorship and donation inquiries, please contact David Evensky or Frances Villagomez at 305-448-8882, ext. 211, or by email at <davidevensky@evenskykatz.com> or <francesvillagomez@evensky.com>. Finally, Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre is producing the first regional production of the most celebrated musical of all time and the longest running musical worldwide, Les Miserables. Coral Gables Rotarians got a taste of the talent assembled by artistic director David Arisco for this production and you can be sure it will be one of the season’s best shows and one you cannot miss. No matter how many times you’ve seen Les Miserables , it always touches the heart and provides a memorable experience for the entire family. It will run through Apr. 5. Consumer confidence has become powerful player in our economy

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY With President Obama’s latest $787 billion stimulus plan set into motion, does this mean our economy will improve soon? Coral Gables financial planner Matt McGrath of Evensky & Katz says world markets and the global economies are still suffering from a lack of confidence. February’s consumer confidence indexes agree. A survey of 5,000 U.S. households reveals consumers are not optimistic about the recession ending anytime soon. The latest Consumer Confidence ratings have hit their alltime low. McGrath believes, “It’s been a crisis in confidence really going back to September. The past three, four, five months, that’s been one of the major, latest components. There’s a lot of money out there but there isn’t that confidence to invest it, to loan it, and

the people behind the money are driving those decisions, obviously.” It’s sort of like the old joke about the Golden Rule: He (or she) who has the gold makes the rules. So, are we seeing the “Bottom of the Recession?” Nobody is sure. We’re all running out of patience to find out. What does it mean for our financial planning? McGrath says make sure you have a comfortably balanced investment blend of stocks, bonds and cash. He recommends balancing long-term goals against short-term market volatility. He still suggests, “staying the course.” But he agrees nervous investors may soon feel more comfortable moving funds to safer, lower-yield investments. But the downside remains; you don’t want to “sell short” at the bottom of the market. Does he think we’ve bottomed out? Like everyone else, he isn’t sure and remains very cautious. The “crisis of confidence” may still take a while to fix.

UM Frost Concert Jazz Band to perform with Sam Rivers BY ELIZABETH AMORE University of Miami Frost Concert Jazz Band, under direction of Dante Luciani with special guest Sam Rivers, will perform at UM’s School of Music on Friday, Mar. 27, 8 pm., at Gusman Hall in the Frost School of Music, 1314 Miller Dr. Tickets are $15 donation. Call 305-2845813 for more information. The performance is presented by UM Frost School of Music and WDNA Radio. Rivers is the jazz world’s high octane octogenarian. The energetic 83-year-old multi-instrumentalist may have left New York for Florida, but he’s far from settled and nowhere near retirement. His visionary conception of complex composition and spontaneous creation, unmistakably manifest in the imaginative music of his trio and orchestra, remains revolutionary and yet, unfortunately, largely underestimated by the musical establishment. A true original, Rivers keeps working and making many contributions. He began gaining notice in the jazz world as a member of Herb Pomeroy’s legendary big band in Boston in the 1950s, but national notoriety did not come until 1964 when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet.

More than 50 koi donated for Baptist Hospital lake More than 50 koi fish were donated and released recently into the lake at Baptist Hospital by Phil and Patty Marraccini, the owners of Summerland Tropical Fish Farms. Mr. Marraccini said he wanted to help enhance the beauty of the hospital lake for the many joggers and walkers who visit the lake each day. He said he chose to donate the koi to the hospital because his three children, who are now grown, were born at Baptist Hospital. His wife, Patty, also worked as a nurse at Baptist for more than 25 years.

In an effort to help control the cat overpopulation problem in Miami-Dade County, the county’s Animal Services Department, Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet, The Cat Network Inc., South Florida Veterinary Medical Association and South Florida Veterinary Foundation will join forces and offer free spay/neuter services on Mar. 22 at the clinic located at 10700 SW 211 St. Local veterinarians will be donating their time to perform the spaying and neutering. Participating organizations encourage pet owners to spay or neuter their pets, as it helps reduce the number of unwanted cats and protects them from health issues that may develop later in life. The free spay and neuter event is for cats only. Appointments are required. Call for appointment 305-805-1603, Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Requirements: Service is for MiamiDade County residents only. Proof of cur-

rent rabies vaccination for cats over 4 months of age. A rabies vaccine can be obtained the day of surgery at no additional cost. Veterinarian may decline surgery due to health reasons. Feral cats and those who go outdoors will be ear tipped to identify them as sterilized. The pet overpopulation crisis needs the entire community to work together in order to reduce the number of animals abandoned and ultimately euthanized at Animal Services. In this partnership, the goal is to sterilize approximately 300 cats. Miami-Dade Animal Services is responsible for enforcing Chapter V, as well as Florida Statute 828, which deals primarily with animal cruelty issues. Each year, the shelter impounds more than 34,000 pets. The goal at Animal Services is to reunite lost pets with their families or find life-long homes for as many animals as possible. For more information, visit online at <www.miamidade.gov/animals> or call Miami-Dade’s Answer Center at 3-1-1.

DISTRITO APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF ORGANIZATION OF NURSE EXECUTIVES Mercy Hospital has announced that Claudia DiStrito, senior vice president of Nursing and Patient Services, has been

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 - A top official at the state Office of Insurance Regulation said Tuesday night that regulators believe the private insurance market could absorb potentially all of the 900,000-plus property insurance policies that would be shed if State Farm were allowed to pull out of Florida as it has proposed to do. State Farm has proposed a twoyear pull out, and company officials told a House Insurance Committee Tuesday that they couldn't say precisely what might be able to change the company's mind, given its precarious financial situation. The company was recently turned down by state regulators for a 47 percent rate increase and company officials told legislators that it can't bear any more losses in the property market in Florida, given the state's hurricane record, regulatory environment and a recent increase in the amount of discounts that customers can get for stormhardening their homes.

THE MIAMI HERALD, JANUARY 27, 2009 - Saying its finances are weakened, State Farm's Florida unit wants to get out of the business of property insurance in the state. The company, Florida’s largest private insurer of homes and condos with 1.2 million policies, wants to keep only auto insurance, it said in a statement. Other State Farm units would still sell life, health and other financial services, it said in a statement. Under State Farm’s proposal, it would phase out of the property insurance business over two years, giving existing customers time to find new coverage. If State Farm’s plan is approved by state insurance regulators, that means it will no longer write the full range of property policies, including homeowners, condo, renters, boaters, mobile home, business property, commercial liability and commercial marine. As seen in Insurance News a publication of the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies.

2009 Mercedes CL has it all — luxury, styling, technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Mercedes Benz CL Coupe is, quite frankly, an incredible piece of automotive machinery. If luxury, styling and state-of-the-art technology are what you want in an automobile, then this is the car for you. The flagship Mercedes-Benz CL coupe lineup includes four models — the V-8 powered CL550 4MATIC (our test car), the rear-wheel-drive CL63 AMG (with an all-AMG V-8) and the 12-cylinder CL600 and CL65 AMG. While the CL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 engine delivering 382 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque; the CL63 AMG features a 6.3-liter V-8 that produces 518 hp and 465 pounds-feet of torque. One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V-8s ever, the high-rpm engine has many features derived from AMG’s successful racing efforts. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive model is

standard for 2009. Mercedes engineers reason that as modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. The 4MATIC model is differentiated by new 18-inch wheels with a distinctive seven-split-spoke design. The 4MATIC system has full-time allwheel-drive that’s integrated into the seven-speed automatic transmission. The system fits right into the standard CL body and utilizes the existing front suspension (gone are the special parts and wider transmission tunnel that were necessary on earlier 4MATIC systems). The extra gears and shafts that drive the front wheels now weigh only 145 pounds more than the rear-wheel-drive model. Beginning from the right side of the transmission tail section, a driveshaft powers a front final drive and differential unit just to the right of the engine oil pan, and the left front axle shaft passes through a tube in the oil pan. The CL550 4MATIC also comes with new standard equipment that includes heated and active ventilated front seats and the Keyless-Go system. Many CLs are ordered with the optional AMG sport package, which includes deeper front and rear aprons, AMG side sills and 19-inch

MCH makes Parents magazine ‘Best Children’s Hospitals’ list BY RACHEL PERRY Miami Children’s Hospital has been included in Parents magazine’s 2009 listing of the nation’s “Best Children’s Hospitals.” Miami Children’s is the only hospital in Florida to be included in the ranking. In order to be considered for ranking, hospitals from across the nation were asked to complete a comprehensive survey developed by Parents magazine. The 250-question survey requested information related to survival rates, numbers of complex procedures performed, research studies, staff qualifications, safeguards to prevent medical errors and more. “Miami Children’s is delighted to be included in the 2009 ‘Best Children’s Hospitals’ ranking,” said Dr. Narendra Kini, president and

CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital. “We commend the magazine for undertaking this project so that parents can make informed decisions regarding the care of their precious children.” The “Best Children’s Hospitals” survey is conducted and released every two years. Miami Children’s Hospital was ranked 26th in both 2009 and in 2007 when the last survey was published by Child magazine. When Child ceased print operations in early 2008, Parents magazine — owned by the same parent company, Meredith Corporation — took over the “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings. The complete rankings can be viewed online at <www.parentsmag.com> and a partial list is in the February 2009 issue of Parents magazine, which is now on newsstands.

Hantman voted vice chair of MPO Governing Board BY LEE STEPHENS Miami-Dade School Board member Perla Tabares Hantman was elected vice chair of the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) Governing Board on Jan. 29 after receiving the unanimous support of the board’s members. Hantman’s selection represents the first time that this position of leadership in the MPO has been held by someone other than a county commissioner. “I am thrilled and humbled with this opportunity to help lead the MPO,” said Hantman, who has served on the MPO since 1999 when she was appointed by Florida’s governor. “This is a tremendous responsibility that I look forward to fulfilling with integrity, honor and commitment.” During her concurrent service to the MPO and the Miami-Dade County School Board, Hantman has championed safety causes, including the Safe Routes to School Program and Walk

Our Children to School Day, which teach children safe walking skills and outline safe routes to school for students and parents. Hantman also has advocated for Teen Driver Safety Week, which encourages changes in unsafe driving behaviors at the high school age level to help save lives, and for the development of guidelines to coordinate the installation of traffic control safety devices for new educational facilities. She has served on the school board since 1996, representing District 4. In 1999, she was nominated and unanimously elected school board chair, becoming the first Hispanic woman to serve in that position. In 2000 and 2001 Hantman was re-elected and served second and third consecutive terms as the board’s chair. Hantman also has served as the school board’s vice chair. She was a member of the Florida Board of Regents, the governing board of Florida’s 10 state universities, from 1990 to 1996.

NBA’s Gomes donates AED to use at Miami-Dade school After a recent Minnesota versus Miami NBA game, Timberwolves forward Ryan Gomes donated an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to John Dylewski, MD, medical director of the L. Austin Weeks Heart Rhythm Center, a part of South Miami Heart Center. As part of its commitment to place an AED in each of Miami-Dade County public schools, the Heart Center will, in turn, give the AED to Hialeah Gardens High School, which wasn’t built when the Heart Center donated 489 AEDs to schools in 2007. Gomes donates an AED to a school in each of the cities he visits as part of his Hoops for Heart Health Foundation to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes.

How to Choose a Dentist BY MIKE DUNN A good first step in choosing a dentist is to ask neighbors, friends and coworkers about the family dentist they have chosen. This is especially helpful if you are moving to a new community and haven’t had time to become acclimated to your surroundings. If there is one dentist who is mentioned frequently and you like what you are hearing, the next step is to schedule a visit to meet him or her and get acquainted. The purpose is to see if you feel comfortable with this person and his dental practices. After all, the dentist you choose will be working on your teeth and the teeth of your spouse and children for possibly a long time. Ask the prospective dentist about his philosophy of health care. You might be surprised at the answer you receive. Ask about fees, payment plans, and insurance coverage. You know what your financial situation is, so it is proper for you to initiate the discussion. How did the dentist and his or her staff respond to you? Was there a professional atmosphere in the office? Did the dentist and staff take the time to listen to your concerns and seem genuinely interested? A dentist who seems too rushed or too busy to take the time to get acquainted may not have the time to address your personal needs and concerns down the road and is probably not the one you want. Something else to consider is the size of the dentist office. This isn’t always the case, but sometimes a dentist with a large practice and a large staff has little time to devote to individual patients. He or she is too busy working and keeping up with the cost of the practice! Large dental practices are more likely than smaller ones to hurry patients through without taking the time for proper examinations or thought to what is actually best for the patient. First and foremost, you want a dentist who has your best tooth care and treatment in mind. You can also make evaluations about a prospective dentist after your initial examination. Did the dentist take the time to do a thorough exam so that no problems or potential problems are missed? A thorough dental examination includes not only inspection of the teeth and gums, but also of the tongue, lips, inside of the cheek, palate, and the skin of the face and neck, plus feeling the neck for abnor-

mal lymph nodes and enlargement of the thyroid gland. A good dentist is also on the alert for periodontal (gum) disease. Did the dentist check for signs and symptoms of periodontal disease such as bleeding from the gums and/or pockets of decay? After the exam, did the dentist establish goals for your long-term care? In March of 1997, Consumers Research provided a number of questions for consumers to ask themselves after they have received treatment from a dentist. These help determine the level of the dentist’s skill. Here are the questions: How does your bite feel? Is any of the dental work irritating your gum? Does the treated tooth look like a tooth? Does dental floss or your tongue catch on the tooth? Did the dentist take time to polish your fillings? Do you feel pain when drinking hot or cold liquids? Was any debris left in your mouth after treatment? Does the dentist use a water spray to cool your teeth while drilling? Other things to watch out for in evaluating a prospective dentist are an emphasis on mass production rather than quality care; an emphasis on cosmetic procedures and one-visit comprehensive treatments; and the routine use of intravenous sedation. Your dentist should be someone in whose judgment you trust. You are entrusting to the dentist the long-term tooth care of your family. Asking the right questions ahead of time can help to assure you of making an informed decision that you won’t regret in the years to come. Copyright © 2005 Publishers-Edge

How to Choose a Pharmacy BY MIKE DUNN When choosing a pharmacy for your family, there should be other considerations aside from a convenient location or even cost. After all, there is much at stake in selecting the right pharmacy and the right pharmacist. This is a person that you, your spouse and your children may be dealing with for many years. Your pharmacist, first and foremost, should be someone you know and trust. According to the apharmacist.org Web site, you should give as much consideration to choosing your pharmacist as you do to choosing a doctor. Pharmacists are health care professionals specializing in medicines and their appropriate use. Because of this, your pharmacist plays an important role in your personal health care and the health care of your family. The importance of assessing personal service in selecting a pharmacist is considered critical by most patients. In that regard, here are some questions to ponder: How accessible is the pharmacist? Is he or she easy to talk to and willing to hear your concerns? During what hours is the pharmacist available to answer your questions?

It is important to choose one pharmacist with whom you can establish an ongoing relationship. Also, by choosing one pharmacy, a complete record of the medicines you take is in one place, making them easier to coordinate and manage. Your pharmacist can alert you to possible drug interactions - particularly if you take a number of different medications - help you track refills on important prescriptions, and provide any necessary detail on short notice. It is wise to consider your entire family’s pharmacy needs. Often, a pharmacist can help you with special circumstances, such as when you are taking care of an elderly relative. If you have aging parents that live nearby, you might ask, for example, if it is possible to deliver prescriptions to their home and send the bill to you. Not all pharmacists and/or pharmacies provide the same services. All pharmacies are required to meet minimum standards. Most, however, offer services and conveniences beyond the minimum requirements. When choosing a pharmacist and/or pharmacy, you should evaluate your needs and make a selection to meet those needs. Here are some other suggested questions to consider: Does the pharmacist take time to answer

your questions in a manner that you understand? Is the pharmacy open during hours that fit your schedule? Does the pharmacy deliver? If so, are there restrictions or additional charges? If there is an emergency, does the pharmacy provide after-hours service or a special emergency telephone number? Are charge accounts available? Does the pharmacy handle the drugs you expect to be taking? There may be a higher cost for additional services or conveniences such as delivery, charge accounts, and emergency service. Real value, however, comes not only from the price of your prescriptions, but from having your specific needs met at a fair price. It is also very helpful to become thoroughly familiar with your insurance benefits as they concern your prescriptions. For example, some prescription benefits plans will only pay for the dispensing of a certain days supply of your medication. If your physician issues a prescription for a larger supply of medication, the pharmacy will have to decrease your quantity dispensed or your insurance company will not pay for the medication. Obviously, since your physician is issuing the prescriptions, it is important to advise your

physician concerning any prescription restrictions under your prescription benefits plan. Not every pharmacy will accept your prescription drug card. A pharmacy must sign a contract to provide services for each prescription benefit plan. The owner of the pharmacy must review each contract and decide which insurance plans the pharmacy will accept. If the pharmacy does not accept your prescription card, the pharmacy probably does not have a signed contract with your health insurance provider. In some cases, pharmacy owners may take steps to add your prescription benefit plan if asked to do so. Once you weigh all the factors and choose a pharmacy, it is strongly recommended that you use this pharmacy for all of your prescriptions needs. This allows you to receive the greatest benefit from the “screening” for drug interactions, etc., by your pharmacist since this one pharmacy has all of your prescription drug records.
