Again this year, CGTV was named a recipient of a coveted Telly Award. Since 2003, CGTV had won five previous Tellys and eight Daveys for television production excellence. The bronze statuette was awarded to the city’s cable television station for its entertainment show On the Scene, which focused on ways residents can “go green.” The show introduced viewers to alternative transportation, and ways to eat and live healthier while preserving the environment. “Awards like these act as a validation

of the good work CGTV is producing for the benefit of our residents,” said Coral Gables city manager Pat Salerno. “Coral Gables Television creates many outstanding programs that are very informative and entertaining.” The Tellys honor excellence in local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs. Today, the Telly is one of the largest and most sought-after awards by industry leaders. Over 14,000 entries were received for this year’s event, the 30th Annual Competition. Judges received entries from all the states and 30 countries. Comcast subscribers can watch Coral Gables Television on Channel 77 and Adelphia customers can watch on Channel 97. Past JOBC president John Admire installed the following officers for the 2009-10 season: Marti Bueso, president; Brian Seits, Jim president-elect; Borgmann, immediate past president; Dallas Brown, vice president; Don Slesnick III, vice president;; Charles Knight, treasurer, and Enid Miguez, secretary. Past president Rex Russo then took over the podium to install the newly elected board, two of whom also are past presidents, John Admire and Barbara Waters. Also installed to serve with them on the board were Dr. Randy Groh and Nancy Little. JOBC secretary and chair of the Queen’s Pageant Committee, Enid Miguez, was announced as the Jim Charlton Member of the Year Award winner with the late Jim Charlton’s widow, Chris, on hand to help present the coveted award. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables awarded the Martin Hughes 2009 Citizen of the Year Award to David Lawrence Jr. at a luncheon meeting on Apr. 2. Lawrence is a Coral Gables resident and former publisher of The Miami Herald. efforts with the Children’s Trust. RCCG past president Frank Sexton chaired the search for this year’s Coral Gables Citizen of the Year, named for fellow Rotarian the late Mar tin Hughes, whose widow, Angie, also attended the affair as a guest. In other Rotary related news, on Saturday, Mar. 28, the Rotaract Club of Coral Gables and its visiting twin club from East Nassau in the Bahamas hosted a Bahamian Festival at the Overtown Youth Center (OYC). Students learned about Bahamian geography and culture, identified the islands of the Bahamas on various maps, and participated in arts and crafts — making Bahamian flags, fish and flowers using national colors. OYC students and the Rotaractors also shared a traditional Bahamian meal — peas ‘n’ rice, curried chicken, and johnny cake. Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club designed for students or young professionals dedicated to community service, international understanding, leadership training and professional development. The Coral Gables and East Nassau clubs are part of a global network of over 7,000 Rotaract clubs in about 163 countries, and the two signed a twin club agreement in June 2008 pledging joint service and fellowship. Rotaract Coral Gables meets every Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., upstairs at JohnMartin’s, 253 Miracle Mile. The full schedule of events is available at <www.coralgablesrotaract.org>. Speaking of JohnMartin’s , hundreds gathered there on Friday, Apr. 10, to help them celebrate their 20th Anniversary with 20-cent beers. Congratulations on 20 great years. Until next time, keep making each day count.

Students raise more than $57,000 at Relay for Life BY SAHYLI HARTNEY More than 500 University of Miami students came together on Saturday, Apr. 4, for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. It is one of the biggest philanthropic events on campus. More than 35 teams of student organizations, fraternities and sororities raised over $57,000, surpassing the $40,000 fundraising goal. Relay for Life provides an opportunity for the UM community to raise funds and awareness to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. Students, faculty, former and current cancer patients as well as their families took turns walking around the University Center patio track from noon until midnight. Music, dance performances and food kept the students involved in the
event even when they were not on the track. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It is a national event that takes place throughout the country, with more than 30 sites in Miami. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. Teams of people from all walks of life have fun while raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. More information is available online at <www.umiamirelay.org/>.

BY SAHYLI HARTNEY Students, faculty and staff at the University of Miami have a new way to help campus police eliminate campus crime. It takes only seconds, promises anonymity, pays cash rewards and uses a highly appealing medium to today’s busy students and administrators, text messaging. The University of Miami community now can anonymously call, click or text any information they have on campus crimes to UM Police through MiamiDade Crime Stoppers. Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers is an organization dedicated to assisting law enforcement in solving crimes by providing an anonymous means for individuals with knowledge of crimes to share their information with police and become eligible for a reward. Anonymity is a critical aspect of the program, and the reporting systems have been designed specifically to assure identities are never revealed. Rewards are paid to individuals who provide information that leads to the filing of criminal charges against offenders and the capture of fugitives; a confidential tip number is issued at the time of reporting for anonymous reward tracking. “The University of Miami Police Department’s new partnership with Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers sends a distinct message that crime on campus is not tolerated by the university community,” said John Pepper of UMPD. Currently operating over 55 distinct
Crime Prevention Programs, UM Police closely follow a community-oriented policing model of law enforcement that focuses on educating and empowering the community to directly work with police in keeping the campus safe. The Crime Stoppers partnership program likely will engage even more students, faculty and staff in campus safety efforts. Students, faculty, staff and anyone else with information on crimes on campus can submit anonymously their tip to UM Police through Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers through one of three ways: Phone — Call Crime Stoppers at 305471-TIPS (8477). Inter net — Go to <www.crimestoppersmiami.com> and click on the “Give A Tip” icon. TXT T ipping (text message) — Send a text to 274637 (crimes) and precede your crime tip with “tips139.” Detailed directions and additional information on Text Tipping are available through the UMPD website at <www.miami.edu/police>. Emergencies and crime against persons in progress should still be reported immediately to police by calling 9-1-1. After calling 9-1-1, additional information concerning the crime can be reported to Crime Stoppers. Additional information on the new partnership between UM Police and Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers is available online at <www.miami.edu/police> or through the UM Police Crime Prevention Office at 305-284-1105.

Multi-event tournament raises money for JCC scholarships
These women enjoy a game of Mah Jongg during a past Alper JCC’s Grand Tournament. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Seventeen years ago the idea of the Alper JCC conducting a multi-event tournament to raise funds was a somewhat novel idea. Since that time, sports tournaments have become a popular and profitable means to a fundraising end, but according to golf course personnel and event caterers, the current economy has forced many scheduled tournaments to be cancelled. Now in its 17th year, the JCC Grand Tournament is thriving due to the generosity of numerous caring sponsors, business owners and participants who support the event as a way to give back to the community. “I think that the reason that the Alper JCC has such strong sponsor support and player backing is that moneys raised by the Grand Tournament directly provide scholarships for children and senior citizens,” said Mindy Finkelman, event coordinator. “We haven’t seen this much community spirit since Hurricane Andrew with people coming out to help one another.” Each year, the Alper JCC has provided more than $200,000 in scholarships to supplement individual and family needs. Many people with limited financial resources depend upon these scholarships to help them participate in JCC programs such as preschool, after school care, summer camp, special needs and senior adult activities. This direct link to how the proceeds are spent is one reason Jackson South Community Hospital again has agreed to
be the title sponsor. This year other named sponsors are Humana for Mah Jongg compeition and CarePlus for tennis. The event began at the Alper JCC on Sunday, Apr. 19, with men’s tennis, to be followed by women’s tennis and Mah Jongg on Monday, Apr. 27. The Golf Tournament takes place on Thursday, May 7, at the beautiful Crandon Golf Club at Key Biscayne, a course known for its breathtaking views of the bay. There are putting contests, and select holes where players participate in poker golf games, and contests for the longest-drive, and closest-to-pin. Any golfer who shoots a hole-in-one gets a 36month lease on a Cadillac CTS provided by Williamson Cadillac Hummer. With multi-tournament events there is something for every interest, and friendly competition for all, it’s no wonder why the community comes out to support the JCC Grand Tournament. For more information, to register or to receive a listing of sponsorship opportunities for the Alper JCC’s 17th Annual Grand Tournament, contact Mindy Finkelman at 305-271-9000, ext. 230, or send email to <grandt@alperjcc.org>. BY JOSE BOZA The Miami Symphony Orchestra is bringing the stunning performances for which it is known from the concert hall to the community as part of its 20th Anniversary celebration. Eduardo Marturet, music director and conductor, will lead the 40 orchestra members in a medley of old and new world classical favorites on Sunday, May 3, 4 p.m., at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The al fresco performance by the Miami Symphony Orchestra is expected to draw close to 500 music lovers for this special performance for the community. “We want to introduce a broader musical experience to Miami audiences and to make classical music more accessible.” The concert will feature Reynaldo Hahn’s Overture Mozart; Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo featuring Spanish guitarist Angel Romero, considered the most important living guitarist in the world, and Jacques Ibert’s Divertissement. The Miami Symphony Orchestra’s concert programs reflect music from the old world and the new; programs
of treasured masterworks accented by sparkling, less often heard gems. Throughout each season, the symphony brings stunning guest artists to Miami, showcasing virtuoso talent drawn from all corners of the globe. The Miami Symphony Orchestra also takes its music beyond its principal concert halls, performing at Art Basel and venues such as Carnegie Hall. Tickets are $50 for adults, $25 for children (12 and under). Call the Miami Symphony Orchestra at 305275-5666 for tickets. Checks should be made payable to Miami Symphony Orchestra. The dancers of Karen Peterson and Dancers have been staging an annual spring performance for the past 19 years, but what sets them apart from others in the community is that many of them perform in wheelchairs; they’re disabled. Among the disabilities these dancers have effectively subdued, at least for the sake of dancing, are autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities and being confined to a wheelchair. In the past, this show was performed at the New World School of the Arts theater in downtown Miami and, at one point, Florida Pictured are Jennifer Smallwood and John Beauregard performing a scene I n t e r n a t i o n a l from Mano a Mano. Author to mark 25 years of The House on Mango Street BY JEN MARSHALL This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of Sandra Cisneros’ now-classic novel of childhood and selfdiscovery, The House on Mango Street. The House on Mango Street gave permission to a whole new generation of Latina and other women writers to write honestly about their lives and it remains one of the most important books written by an American woman to date. Cisneros is the recipient of numerous awards for her writing, including a Lannan Literary Award and an American Book Award as well as fellowships from the N a t i o n a l Endowment of the Arts and the M a c A r t h u r Foundation. Starting a new company may be a daunting task for some, but not for the brother and sister team of Dr. Joseph K. Duran and Yvette Duran Someillan. They combined their vast knowledge and experience in the field of Audiology and hearing aids and embarked on a new business venture. Before receiving a doctorate degree in Audiology at the University of South Florida, Joseph Duran started his work with hearing loss and hearing aids at a very young age at Caribe Hearing Aids in Miami. While studying at Miami Dade College he worked as a Hearing Instrument Specialist and realized his passion for the field. He felt the need to continue his studies and found that Audiology, encompassing hearing and balance disorders, brought him the satisfaction he was looking for. It afforded him the opportunity to not only help patients with hearing loss, but also those suffering from dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Joseph had the opportunity to sharpen his skills as an audiologist at the University of Miami Ear Institute. His sister Yvette, who also started working at Caribe Hearing Aids at a young age, “did not think I would spend most of my life in this industry.” But while studying Accounting at Florida International University (FIU) she also studied for and received a license to sell and dispense hearing aids. After graduating from FIU she decided to continue working at Caribe and applied her accounting knowledge to the administrative side of the business. Naturally, when the Duran’s decided to open their own business, New Generation Hearing Centers, in January of this year, they divided the responsibilities. Yvette is in charge of operations, while Joseph attends to their patients. Both married with children, they believe that owning their own business allows them to continue their careers while, at the same time affording them time to spend with their families. Together, the team has accumulated 30 years of experience in both Audiology and the Hearing Aid industry, making them well prepared when they opened the doors of their new office at 3431 SW 107th Avenue in Miami, Florida in January 2009. Choosing a place to start was not a problem. Joseph and Yvette both grew up in this area of Miami. They both went to Rockway Elementary, and while Yvette continued her education at St. Brendan High School, Joseph attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. Born of Cuban parents, Dr. Duran and his sister Yvette are fluent in Spanish and English. “This is our home, we know the people and we understand their needs”, commented Joseph Duran, 32, Co-President and Director of Audiology of New Generation Hearing Centers. Although Dr. Duran does not specialize in children under the age of ten, he has patients up to the age of 106. Recently, he had to look for solutions for a
patient who suddenly (within seconds) lost his hearing in one ear because of a displaced shot while cleaning a firearm. Another patient lost hearing in one ear while scuba diving. “Luckily he came to see me right away, so I was able to have him begin treatment with an Otolaryngologist getting him on the road to recovery,” stated Dr. Duran. Based on their years of involvement with the sale of hearing instruments, the Duran’s have been able to keep their finger on the pulse of any and all new technological advancements in their field. They are able to empathize with their patients and understand how hearing loss, when untreated, can lead to other health related problems such as stress, fatigue, decreased self-confidence, and in extreme cases, depression.
The transition from analog to digital technology in the last 10 years has completely changed the menu for hearing aids. “Now our patients have more options,” affirmed Yvette Duran Someillan, 38, CoPresident and Director of Operations of New Generation Hearing Centers. Since the appearance of digital hearing aids, open fittings, and Bluetooth compatibility (technology that allows for cordless communication between hearing aids and cell phone or other electronic devices), many people with hearing difficulties feel more comfortable wearing them. Digital hearing aids, in comparison with analog systems, are extremely flexible in terms of programming. Since they come equipped with computer chips, environmental sounds can be adjusted automatically. Wearing a hearing aid is no longer cumbersome or a nuisance, hearing aids are now discreet and can be fit to suit any lifestyle. “That has allowed me to offer made-to-order hearing aids to my patients,” explained Dr. Duran. For example, one of his patients is a teacher and reported difficulty hearing the students sitting in the last row of his class. Dr. Duran programmed his hearing aids to allow this patient to hear those students by simply pressing a button. When not in class, the patient only has to touch the same button again for the hearing aid to function properly in other situations. New Generation Hearing Centers offers a wide range of hearing aid types and styles with prices starting at $500. Most of the hearing aid cost is generally paid for by the patient since most insurance plans will only cover a portion of the total price. More advanced models begin at $1,300. A majority of the hearing aids available have been designed by large manufacturers, one of them being well-known, Swiss-made Phonak Hearing Instruments. It is because of the many years in the field of audiology that both Dr. Duran and his sister felt secure in their ability to achieve success with this business venture, even in this unstable economy. The Durans said…“We believe we are giving a much needed service in an area we know and love”.

LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Volkswagen GTI is a hatchback that offers good looks and sporty performance at an affordable price. With a starting price of $22,990, the newest GTI has all the refinement and technology usually found on vehicles that cost much more. The GTI is offered in either two- or four-door form. It’s nicely styled, with a large, black honeycomb grille that has a defining red strip outlining the radiator. The GTI badge is positioned at the front of the car on the passenger’s side. The honeycomb design of the grille is carried to the lower front fascia with halogen fog lights. Higher up at the intersection of the hood and fender, the headlight housings incorporate high-intensity gas-discharge Xenon headlights. Distinctive
bumpers, widened black sill panels and darkened headlight housings highlight the exterior. Larger 18-inch alloy wheels and a sunroof are available options. The heart of the GTI’s performance comes from its 2.0-liter FSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 200 hp 16-valve DOHC gasoline powerplant, with a high compression ratio and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters for smooth operation. The advanced and compact “pocket rocket” engine incorporates a fully electronic management system and includes drive-by-wire throttle control and FSI direct injection for optimal fuel delivery, all serving to increase power and improve efficiency, while reducing emissions. When combined with a standard sixspeed manual transmission, the GTI clocks 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and has an electronically governed top speed of 130 mph. With the six-speed manual transmission, the GTI delivers an EPAestimated 31 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. With the optional automatic DSG transmission, the GTI clocks 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds and gets 22/29 mpg.
Volkswagen GTI has large, black honeycomb grille design that carries over to the lower front fascia.
The dual-clutch DSG transmission is one of the GTI’s technical highlights. It utilizes direct shifting that automatically engages and disengages gears without the need for a clutch pedal. A computer engages one clutch on the next gear that’s needed, just as it releases the other clutch from the previous gear. The shifts are seamless and happen without the power loss associated with a traditional clutched shift. Launch Control, combined with the DSG transmission, helps get the GTI off the line a little faster. The Launch Control program allows the engine to rev before the first clutch is engaged.
The DSG with Volkswagen Tiptronic lets drivers shift gears up and down with a tap of the gearshift selector or fingeroperated shiftpaddles on the steering wheel. The 2009 GTI rides on a fully independent, sports-tuned suspension that enhances overall vehicle dynamics and cornering agility. It all adds up to an exhilarating driving experience.
