ome people believe that good things always happen in threes. Others think that only bad things come in threes and are to be avoided. I suppose that these beliefs are more of a “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” type situation. You can look at the glass as half full or you can squint at it and judge it to be merely half empty. Indeed, we strike a balance between good natured optimism and classic hum drum pessimism every day of our lives. Whatever your world view might be in these challenging times, I trust that we can all agree to one thing: whatever happens in threes let’s hope they bring us a bit of good fortune and success. Along the same lines, this month MARK A. TROWBRIDGE PRES. & CEO, CG CHAMBER there are three topical items I wish to share with everyone. Usually, I expound on a topic of relevance to the business community and share just a little about the Chamber’s happenings. However, given these difficult economic

BY JILLIAN BACZEWSKI Bertha Vazquez, a science teacher at G.W. Carver Middle School in Coral Gables, received the Richard C. Bartlett Education Award from the National Environmental Education Foundation on May 11. Vazquez was recognized for her leadership in integrating environmental lessons into daily education and presented a $5,000 cash grant to continue her efforts.

A science teacher for two decades, Vazquez spearheaded efforts to “green” Carver’s campus, launched a recycling program at the school, and led students on annual bird counts and field trips. She inspired students and colleagues, not just at her school but throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools, to make “green” education part of every subject area. Because of Vazquez, environmentally themed lessons have been integrated into math, language arts, visual arts and even French classes.

Crowd turns out for opening night of Havana Bourgeois Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Opening night for Havana Bourgeois, a new play by Carlos Lacamara, at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, drew a fun-loving crowd dressed for the occasion with lots of ladies adorning their hair with fresh flowers and men in guayaberas. A Bacardi Bar covered the cocktail reception before the play that explores the impact of Castro’s Revolution on the Cuban middle class following the lives of the employees of an advertising agency. The play reveals the transformation of Cuba from a thriving capitalist country into a Marxist dictatorship in a short two years. A poignant play with lots of laughs, Havana Bourgeois has a great cast including Danny Pino, the lead, and James Puig, the irreverent artist who carried the comedy. This is a production that will move anyone who has been touched by the revolution. For tickets, call 305-444-9293. University of Miami students Steven Sloan and Gyr os Samale spoke to Gables Rotarians recently about their work with Engineers Without Borders

(EMB). Raising their own funds for travel to El Socorro, Honduras, and Casablanca, Peru, by selling concessions during Dolphins home games and other activities, their efforts already have achieved results by helping provide clean water to thousands. Speaking of Rotary, District 6990 Governor Marcy Ullom presented district awards to two outstanding Gables Rotarians during a recent meeting. The prestigious “Rotarian of the Year for Vocational Service” was awarded to Lan Nghiem-Phu for his devotion to anything connected to District Information Technology. In addition, Yolanda Woodbridge was named “Rotarian of the Year for District International Service,” for her outstanding work as GSE Team Chair this year. Both of these Rotarians exemplify Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” Kristi House’s Third Annual Breaking the Silence Luncheon at Grove Isle raised in excess of $320,000 as more than 300 guests gathered to help their effort to aid children who have been sexually abused in Miami-Dade County.. Leon Medical Centers underwrote the event. JOBC presents scholarships to pair of student athletes BY FERNANDA MEDICI The Junior Orange Bowl Committee (JOBC) recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to two different students during the annual Miami-Dade County Public Schools Scholar-Athlete Luncheon. The event took place at the Miami Airport Hilton, and Marti Bueso, JOBC president, handed awards to the athletes who have participated in various sports offered by the Junior Orange Bowl International Youth Festival. Many students apply every year to the Scholar Athlete Award, hoping to be recognized for their great efforts that do not end on the field. The students must maintain a high GPA and write an essay, which is evaluated by a panel of educators. Both of the award recipients must have participated in a sport that the JOBC hosts an event for in order to be eligible for the JOBC scholarship. The event also is an opportunity for other organizations to present awards to the high achieving student athletes. A captain and a participant in volleyball, basketball, and softball, Shelby LaBeach, from Miami Central Senior

High School, was one of the recipients of the scholarships. She was selected to be a guest speaker at nearby middle schools to explain the importance of academics in relation to sports. “I strive for the best and nothing less,” LaBeach wrote in her essay. She has a 4.053 GPA, ranking in the top 4 percent of her class and hopes to be a business major in college. Named “Freshman of The Year” at Miami High, Andrew Raposo was the other recipient of JOBC’s scholarship. He also is a captain and participant in cross-country, track and basketball. “I am a hard-working, dedicated student who has been forever molded by my experience as a student athlete,” wrote Raposo who has a 4.933 GPA and is ranked in the top 3 percent of his class. Other members of the Junior Orange Bowl who were present at the ceremony include Dallas Brown, vice president; Charles Knight, treasurer; Chuck Little, past president; Nancy Little, board member, and Mark Pidal, administrative director. The Junior Orange Bowl Committee Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that serves the community of South

MIGUEZ, from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– CAMPAIGN, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– her very bright son Marcus is an honors student at the University of Florida. A patron of the arts and theater, Miguez especially enjoys opening nights at Actors’ Playhouse. She also is a member of the South Florida Emerald Society as well as the Coral Gables Community Foundation. However, her true love has been working with the Junior Orange Bowl Committee for the past six years. She was honored most recently as the Junior Orange Bowl’s “Volunteer of the Year,” a prestigious award that was well deserved. With the Junior Orange Bowl, Miguez has served as chair of the Royal Court Search Committee as well as secretary of the Junior Orange Bowl’s board of directors. Working with the Royal Court every year is her passion and is a job that requires endless hours over a period that spans several months.

She escorts the JOBC Queen and Princesses to almost every festival event and other community activities promoting the Junior Orange Bowl Festival. Coordinating those activities and caring for the young girls and their parents is a daunting task that she does with a smile and handles with ease. Because of her involvement with the Royal Court, she is literally a second mom to the girls and, with no daughters of her own, that makes this task all the more fulfilling. Miguez strives and succeeds at being a positive influence on teenage girls and she enjoys every minute of it. Besides her dedication and commitment to the Junior Orange Bowl, she shares her time with her significant other, David Albury, and her job with the Coral Gables Fire Department. She currently is in her 27th year with the city. She has worked in Procurement and Finance and has been with the Fire Department for 22 years.

other local services. “There has never been a better time for Miami residents to vacation in their own backyards than right now,” said William D. Talbert III, CDME, president and CEO of GMCVB. “The deals are incredible at places that attract visitors from around the world. Plus, residents can feel good about strengthening our economy when they spend their dollars locally. Buying, playing and staying local helps retain jobs and expands Greater Miami’s tax base.” The “Buy, Play and Stay Local” program is being supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign that includes radio and newspaper ads, public relations and a dedicated website — <www.MiamiDealsForLocals.com>. Residents are encouraged to check the website regularly for updates on special offers. Among the deals currently being promoted: Miami Spa Month — Nearly 20 of Miami’s premier spas will offer $99 treatments — normally valued at $199 and above — during July. The promotion was so popular last year that it was extended for a second month. Miami Spice Restaurant Month — Upwards of 100 Miami restaurants will offer $23 lunch and $36 dinner prix fixe menus during August and September, an average discount of 30-60 percent off the regular value. Beginning on May 1, the GMCVB launched the first-ever Spring Miami Spice where more than 50 of Miami’s finest restaurants are offering the $23 lunch and $36 dinner prix fixe menus. Spring Miami Spice runs through May 31 and has all the ingredients of the successful Miami Spice summer program, which launched in 2001. Accommodations — More than 50

package deals at a broad range of hotels and resorts throughout Greater Miami and the Beaches now are available on the website. Special packages range from complimentary nights to special upgrades. Participants in the promotion include Chamber South, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The concept of “staycations” — where individuals and families stay home and take day trips to local attractions — became popular last spring as the summer travel season approached and gas prices were reaching record highs. With the national economy now in full recession, many people continue to look for ways to cut back on expenses, including travel. “Fortunately for people in Miami, staycations are hardly a hardship,” Talbert noted. There is a spectacular array of options in Greater Miami and the Beaches for planning a fabulous vacation close to home that will help make our economy strong and won’t break the bank.” The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is a non-profit sales and marketing organization with a mission to attract visitors to Greater Miami and the Beaches for leisure, business and conventions. Yard House opens second Florida location at Village of Merrick Park BY ELIZABETH BORSTING Yard House, which opened its first Florida restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens nearly four years ago, has expanded its presence in the Sunshine State with the opening of its second Florida location in the upscale Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables. Yard House, an award-winning restaurant known for its American fusion fare and world’s largest selection of draft beer, opened its doors on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, to welcome its first guests for lunch, dinner and late-night dining. “We are extremely excited to open a second Florida location in Coral Gables,” said Florida-born Steele Platt, founder and CEO of the company. “The demographics are just right for us with a mix of young families, couples and singles. I think our concept of great food, classic and contemporary rock, and the world’s largest selection of draft beer will be a welcome addition to both the region and the tenant mix at the Village of Merrick Park.” Spanning more than 12,000-square-feet, Yard House features 130 taps of beer, a menu of American fusion fare, original artwork commissioned by artist Jerome Gastaldi, and a state-of-the-art sound and visual system. The restaurant also boasts both indoor and outdoor dining with a guest capacity of nearly 482. The striking interior showcases a contrasting mix of warm woods, stainless steel accents, and original artwork complete with a signature oval bar lined with taps from both domestic and imported brewers. The glass-enclosed keg room is essentially the pulse of the operation, housing as much as 5,000 gallons of beer at a time. Three to five miles of individual beer lines, as

Pictured are some of the 130 taps of beer in the Yard House restaurant.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– well as an assembly of glycol lines stretch from the keg room to the island bar via overhead stainless steel conduits maintaining a constant temperature of 34-36 degrees and keeping the beer consistently fresh and perfectly chilled for every pint. Some two-dozen plasma screens are strategically placed throughout the restaurant so guests can enjoy the latest sporting or news events. Music also is an essential cornerstone of the Yard House concept. The audio system features a vast and varied music library of more than 6,000 titles, from classic and contemporary rock to old school ’80s. The play list is hand selected by Platt himself and is transferred via streaming audio to each location daily. The sophistication of the audio technology allows the play list to be

instantly altered in real time to reflect the age and preference of the guests. “Music is as equally important as our food, beer and service,” Platt said. “We take it very seriously. The one thing we don’t want our guests to hear is the clatter of forks, knives and spoons, which is typical in other restaurants. We strive for our guests to have a fun and truly enjoyable experience at Yard House.” Adding to the ambiance is a menu of American fusion fare created by award-winning executive chef and partner Carlito Jocson. With a nod to his Filipino heritage, many of Chef Jocson’s dishes feature flavors of the Pacific Rim, which are then infused with more traditional fare. The menu, which boasts more than 100 items, includes a creative list of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, rice and pasta dishes, as well as steak and seafood. A gluten-free menu also is available upon request. A prix fixe children’s menu, printed on a 12-page activity book, features a selection of items found on the regular menu only served in age-appropriate portions and accompanied with a choice of side dishes, a Kustom Kooler and fresh fruit dessert bar. Yard House recently introduced a gluten-free menu featuring an array of signature items. Platt and his partners, Jocson and Harald Herrmann, president and chief operating officer, are preparing to expand into Texas and Massachusetts, two new markets for the company, during the next 18 months. Yard House, located at the Village of Merrick Park, 320 San Lorenzo Ave. in Coral Gables, is open daily from 11 a.m. and features lunch, dinner, a weekday happy hour, and late-night dining. ONE: Later this month, as your will read about in the pages that follow, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce is hosting our annual Goals Conference. Our theme, Great Expectations, is a focus on optimism and the future and how your Chamber will play a central role in the economic recovery of our business community. More importantly, it is an opportunity for you to get fully engaged – members and community leaders – in charting our course for the next year. Easily considered to be the most significant networking event of our Chamber year, join us on Thursday, June 25th and Friday, June 26th as we ponder Great Expectations! Plus, if you join the Chamber now, or renew early, you can Beat the Heat and

qualify for some outstanding discounts and rolled-back prices that qualify as a local stimulus program for Coral Gables’ business community. TWO: A dear friend, Cathy SwansonRivenbark, retired from the City this past month after twenty amazing years of service. A long-time, stalwart supporter of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Cathy’s leadership, deliciously dry sense of humor, and ability to just get things done shall be missed greatly. When I first arrived at the Chamber three years ago, Cathy was there to greet me with open arms, an earnest ear, and quiet advice. She was my sounding board, my external thermometer, and a very candid BS meter. I always knew that she would tell me the truth, keep my confidence, and join me on this journey to support our business community. You could ask for no better public servant than Cathy. She will be missed and we wish her well in her future

endeavors. THREE: Finally, as much as it pains me to admit this, hurricane season is upon us. And, it is important to plan ahead – both for your home and your business. Below are some important tips for businesses. 1. PREPARE A PLAN & PRACTICE IT! 2. BACK UP YOUR DATA 3. PROTECT YOUR SITE 4. OPERATE REMOTELY 5. ESTABLISH AN ON-SITE SUPPORT PLAN 6. SECURE A RECOVERY SERVICES PROVIDER 7. IMPLEMENT AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY 8. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! Prepare, Plan, and Practice and make hurricane preparedness your business ... nique service and environment are the two elements of Coral Gables Dentistry that set them apart from their

competitors. Located at 220 Miracle Mile, Suite 228, Coral Gables Dentistry, led by the experienced and professional Dr. Gordon D. Sokoloff, D.D.S. offers complete and comprehensive dental care for the entire family. As a patient walks into the offices of Dr. Sokoloff he or she will be greeted by the calming natural colors of paintings personally donated to the office by appreciative patients. The artwork doesn’t end there, though. Located in every patient room there are miniature ceiling murals or photos that depict lush tropical environments of soothing aqua blues and floral greens. “Each one of these paintings and photographs I picked out so that our patients are put at ease as they are going through their examinations, Dr. Sokoloff said. Dr. Sokoloff is truly enamoured with his profession.

“I’ve never been the one that embraces the heavy life-and-death matter of invasive surgery or the intensity of an emergency room environment, but I am still in a health profession that helps people in a very significant way and I love that most about my job, Dr. Sokoloff said. Coral Gables Dentistry has a variety of ways to help patients feel relaxed at the office. They offer nitrous oxide at no additional charge for any dental procedure, including cleanings. During any particular treatment, a patient has access to a large catalog of iPod music as well as access to a library of films that can be watched through virtual vision glasses. Emergency care is available to patients 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. “We hope you never have a dental emergency, but know that we’ll be here for you if you need us, Dr. Sokoloff said. Dr. Gordon Sokoloff was born and raised in Coral Gables and has been practicing dentistry since 1981. He completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane University where he received his B.A. degree. The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce offers its gratitude to Cathy Swanson for her selfless contributions during her 20-year tenure as Director of Economic Development with the City of Coral Gables. Cathy served as a bridge between the community, business leaders and the citizens, often taking difficult positions to enhance the over-all benefit to the Coral Gables community. She was the driving force behind the creation of such community projects as the Gables Grand, Village of Merrick Park, Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, Coral Gables Country Club and the soon-to-be-opened Gables Arts Cinemateque. On April 29th, 2009 the Chamber publicly honored Cathy, a person who has without fanfare contributed significantly to the economic well being of the business community and quality of life of Coral Gables, with a resolution of recognition. We offer our sincerest thanks and best wishes to Cathy!

Your emergency portable TV may not work after hurricane BY HAL FELDMAN We entered another South Florida hurricane season on June 1. We all know the drill; we’ve done it countless times before. Prepare the shutters, check the generators, get fuel and make sure you have plenty of fresh batteries for the flashlights and your emergency portable TV. But this year, fresh batteries for the TV likely won’t be enough. Most of us will need a fresh TV too. On June 12, 2009, the FCC and U.S. Government requirement to have all broadcast television stations permanently shut down their analog signals goes into effect. This means most TV sets that are not using cable or satellite boxes simply will stop working. More importantly, nearly all of the portable TV sets people have packed away for emergency use become instantly defunct. So, if you are used to huddling around your battery-powered emergency TV to watch news reporters flap in the breeze as they tell you about the latest hurricane damage, you’ll need to buy a new set that has a digital tuner (ATSC). Otherwise, it’ll just be you and the radio. And for those who do have satellite or cable plugged into an analog TV; don’t forget that should (or more likely, when) the cable or satellite feed goes out, you are in the same boat. Nothing but snow to keep you company as the winds howl outside. The reason for the analog shut down is clear — or more accurately high-def. It is the ATSC digital signal that is capable of producing beautiful, high-resolution HDTV images on our ever-expansive flatscreen TVs. It’s the future of all TV. During the past two years, all broadcast television stations have been dual broadcasting their

programming in both analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) formats to accommodate viewers during the transition. The June 12 analog shutoff is the next logical step in the move to HDTV. While there are many benefits to the digital signal, the lack of backwards compatibility is a huge drawback, especially for Floridians during hurricanes. For the uninformed, our next weather event could be a rude awakening. That’s why, as a technology consultant, I felt it important to write this article. It is important to know that this potential “communication emergency” is real. Thankfully, the solution is simple. Buying a new emergency ATSC portable television is not an expensive proposition. At around $100, it’s pretty much a nobrainer. I have seen and recommend buying either the Haier 7-inch portable TV (Model HLT71) or the Coby 8-inch portable TV (Model TF-TV891). Both are sold through Amazon.com (use this link http://tinyurl.com/hurricaneTVs). In addition to the new portable TV, you also may want to consider an external HDTV antenna. Based on my research in the areas of Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, digital broadcast reception is marginal with the use of a basic indoor antenna and may require something beyond the included telescoping antenna. Either a roof antenna or a passive indoor antenna such as the Terk HDTVi are good choices. Even though amplified antennae typically yield better reception, I suggest you don’t buy one for your hurricane supplies. If the power is out, you are out of luck.

2009 Nissan Maxima luxury sport sedan has all-new identity Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima is the seventh generation of the luxury sport sedan and it just may be the best one yet. The Maxima rides on Nissan’s popular D Platform, the same FWD underpinning that was introduced with the hot-selling Altima. However, the chassis has been “enhanced” with the use of aluminum suspension links, revised suspension, new technology shocks, a lower engine mounting and a new Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), all of which contribute to minimal torque steer and much better handling As for design, the new Maxima no longer resembles its sibling Altima, but does look a lot like Nissan’s new GT-R super sports car. It has a short nose and deck, a long sloping roof, deeply sculpted fenders and a wider front and rear track. Wraparound upturned headlights and a wide grille combine with a large bumper

opening and a bulging hood. The design flows through deep-waisted rear fenders and into a high trunk lid. New L-shaped LED taillights with side marker bulbs accent the rear. The sporty look is accented further by 18-inch (or available 19-inch) aluminum alloy wheels and low-profile performance tires. The new Maxima is available in two models, the 3.5 S and 3.5 SV, both powered by an enhanced 3.5-liter VQ-series 290-hp V-6 engine (19/26 mpg). The revised engine has a modular design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. It also has a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and an electronically controlled throttle. It all adds up to more horsepower and torque for quicker acceleration. The 3.5 SV models add leatherappointed sport seats, an advanced Bose premium audio system with nine speakers, HomeLink, fog lights and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators. Several option packages are offered,

including the Sport Package with sporttuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down features, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memory, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, metallic link trim, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio and premium leather-appointed seats. The Premium Package includes a dualpanel moonroof with rear roof window and front and rear power retractable sunshades, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down features, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memo-

ry, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, premium leather-appointed seats, eucalyptus wood-tone trim, 7.0inch color monitor and rearview monitor. This new 2009 Nissan Maxima should compete very well in a class that includes the Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, Acura TL, Infiniti G35 and Toyota Avalon. Base price is $29,290 on the 3.5S and $31,900 on the 3.5SV.
