MaryScull Brown going strong at 93 years young BY GLORIA BURNS

t 93 years young, MaryScull Brown has a life story that would make a great book. Brown is well known as an Ambassador for the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, as parliamentarian for various clubs and for her generous support of education — but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Born in New York City, Brown attended St. Agatha’s School for Girls and later graduated from Barnard College (Columbia University) after deciding against Vassar and Wellesley because of the cold. Brown comes from rather remarkable stock as her father, a neurologist who graduated from Harvard at 16, was a pioneer in medicine. With partner Nicholas Tesla, he manufactured the first electric machine for medicine and lived to 100 years of age, so longevity is certainly in her favor. MaryScull Brown began her career as a writer for the Paul Block syndicate that was picked up by several large

Haggard named president of Florida Justice Assn. BY REBECCA KLEIN Michael Andrew Haggard, partner at Coral Gables-based Haggard Law Firm, was named president of the Florida Justice Association (formerly the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers), a statewide legal organization comprised of civil trial lawyers in Florida. Haggard was sworn in as the 50th president of the organization during the 2009 Florida Justice Association’s annual convention held recently at the Turnberry Isle Resort in Aventura. In this prestigious position of president of the Florida Justice Association, Haggard will lead more than 3,000 attorneys who work in the legislative, political and media arenas to ensure that Floridians know and understand the importance of their rights to justice and to make certain that these rights are safeguarded and protected. Prior to his appointment as president, Haggard climbed the ranks of leadership within the Florida Justice Association by serving on the board of directors and then the executive committee. “I believe that all Floridians benefit when deserving individuals have a fair chance to seek justice in our state’s courts and that Florida’s consumers are made safer when large corporations and industries are held to a high ethical standard and accept fair responsibility for their actions,” Haggard said upon his appointment. “I look forward to serving as president of this prestigious legal organization and will strive to do the best I can to make positive changes for the citizens of Florida,” he added. “Mike is an incredibly passionate,

dedicated, and knowledgeable person who will lead us in the year ahead,” said Scott Carruthers, FJA’s executive director. “He will play a critical role in the future direction of Florida’s civil justice system as he will guide us into the important 2010 elections cycle and critical 2010 legislative session.” Haggard concentrates his trial practice in personal injury litigation specializing in pool drowning accidents, premises liability, negligent security, wrongful death and medical malpractice. Haggard’s other achievements include serving as past president of the MiamiDade Justice Association as well as serving on the boards of other notable legal organization. Haggard earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and his law degree from the University of Miami.

BROWN, from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– newspapers. She was gearing up for a trip to Italy when Mussolini put the brakes on that. She recalls listening on the radio to the accounts of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and later the Philippines. The day after, she was recruited by Naval Intelligence as a civilian and began a life as a spy deciphering suspicious cables. Who would have imagined MaryScull Brown as a spy? After World War II, she took a job as editor of the Columbia Alumni News and later married Willard Brown, a lawyer, in 1948. Two years later she had twin boys. They were still living in New York and hating the cold weather. When her husband had an opportunity to transfer to Miami, they jumped at the chance for warm weather. Eventually they bought a home where she still lives to this day. In 1953, daughter Katherine was born at Doctors’ Hospital. Once the children were in school, Brown became an active PTA leader attending conferences at Rollins College. Elected vice president of Merrick School PTA, she quickly

moved up to the presidency after the elected president’s husband absconded with his company’s fund and had to leave town. As president, she was part of the Dade County Council and over the years served as Bylaws and Policy and Procedures chair, and chair of the Red Cross Committee. She has been a member of the Red Cross for 40 years and started as a member of the Military Service Committee, became secretary of the board and is now a trustee of the board. Brown serves currently as president of the South Dade Parliamentary Unit, parliamentarian for the Miami Senior High School PTA and Coral Gables Woman’s Club. She is Book Service chair for the Florida State Association of Parliamentarians, Education chair for the Dade County Federation of Women’s Clubs and is a member of several other sub committees. While many people her age are slowing down, MaryScull Brown is more active than most people half her age, serving as a role model to us all.

Gables gallery hosts exhibition ‘Picasso’s Imaginary Portraits’

BY ANN ROBBINS-UDEL “Picasso’s Imaginary Portraits,” a series of gouache paintings on corrugated cardboard packing panels, transposed by one of the leading lithographers of France into a suite of 29 vibrant primary color limited edition original litho prints, would be a joy to behold in any city where world class art is valued and appreciated. The fact that The Americas Collection and the Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation brought it to Coral Gables this summer gives testimony that Miami is well on its way to being a year round cultural center. The exhibit’s opening was well attended with a standing-room-only crowd of some 300 art lovers to hear Dr. Carol Damian,

chief curator and director of the Frost Art Museum, give an engaging gallery talk about the life and work of the 20th Century superstar artist. Picasso’s signature ability to show the forth dimension, time, on a two dimensional surface, will continue to fascinate, puzzle and astonish audiences for the foreseeable future. A similar, Spanish-language talk by art critic Carlos Luis followed. The exhibition can be viewed through July 23 at The Americas Collection, 2440 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. For gallery hours, call 305-446-5578 or visit online at <www.americascollection.com>. After the local show, the exhibit will travel to Central and South American venues.

Recession summer is upon us. Instead of looking for a break from work, many are looking for work. Instead of wishing to get away from home, many are wishing to stay in a home. Whether wealthy, middle class, or poor, adults are worried. And when adults are worried, intentionally or not, they broadcast a signal of alarm that echoes in their children. Many parents do not pick up on their children’s distress signals because they are too deafened by their own. It is in such times that schools serve as more than a place for learning. Schools become an anchor in a community, a place of refuge for children and their families. When difficult economic choices must be made, many children in private schools return to public schools. When money is tight, children eat their breakfasts and lunches in school. In school, children can rely on routine, orderliness, and a place of stability when their own home environment may be in flux. A child knows what to expect from day to day in school. Now that summer is here and school is out, many parents face difficult choices about what to do with their children. Because both school and social service budgets are slashed, many spaces in summer school programs and camps have been lost, so parents cobble together as best they can a way to have their children watched. Sometimes it is television that is the watcher as children far too young sit inside behind locked doors. Many parents are already counting the days until our schools reopen.

• • • •

Their reasons might be selfish, but their need is real. When the school doors reopen, our children will return. What will they face upon that return? Our school board has the basis to ensure our students return to schools that have the resources to welcome them. In tough times, it is more important than ever that our students have the resources they need. They need the books and art supplies, the paper and musical instruments, the baseballs and basketballs and footballs that are part

In recession summer, school board members can provide stability to the lives of children. They can do the job they were elected to do. of their school day. They need the soap and the toilet paper. They need the food for their breakfasts and lunches. They need their teachers to be there to welcome them. Our school board members have the power to provide those resources. They can raise the school board millage by 0.25. School boards were told by our legislators to fill the hole in education funding that they were too craven to fill. In recession summer, school board members can provide stability to the lives of children. They can do the job they were elected to do.

Miami Samurai Benihana manager. “Isabella and Nicole perfectly crafted the theme of our ‘Children Helping Children’ art contest.” The art contest is part of the famed teppanyaki restaurant company’s 2009 “Children Helping Children” program. In addition, Benihana donated 100 percent of proceeds of all children’s meals served on Japanese Children’s Day, May 5, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers. Watch WK Baptist Hospital construction via webcam BY RICHARD YAGER West Kendall’s Baptist Hospital is breaking new ground with technology advances in both construction and operations for the 2011 opening of its $160 million structure. The four-story hospital, under construction on a 30-acre site at SW 162nd Avenue and 96th Street, now gets its picture taken every 10 minutes. Instant building progress segments are recorded by an elevated video camera displaying a southwesterly view of the 282,000-square-foot building and campus. While the 80-bed capacity now is being built, the hospital has capability to add 53 in-patient beds for a capacity of 133, said Jason Virelli, assistant vice president for strategic planning, speaking during a July 13 meeting of the Kendall Federation of Homeowner Associations (KFHA). He noted the expansion is due, in part, to a decision by Kendall Regional Medical Center to vacate its state approval for a similar 80-bed West Kendall facility. Answering a query about the hospital’s reputation as a “paperless” facility, Virelli noted, “We’re now analyzing pilot computer programs at other area facilities to adapt to the West Kendall hospital when it opens operations in two years. “While paper will remain where needed, the use of computerized records provide both safety and security factors for patient care, especially in documenting prescriptions and other medical treatment procedures.” Incorporating LEED building features, the hospital will create specialized “green” programs through plastic reduction, recycled paper and materials, hybrid vehicle use, waste management initiatives, and employee educational and event programming. Assuring nursing excellence “is anoth-

er priority for us, especially at a time when securing trained professionals has become an acute need at all hospitals,” Virelli added. To meet that challenge, Baptist Health South Florida purchased a 100-unit community at SW 107th Avenue and Kendall Drive to provide low-cost housing for nursing staff members. The former Sherwood condominium is completing refurbishing work prior to opening. In addition, the Versant scholarshiptraining program, a two-year, $20,000 assistance program to train nurses for advancement to acute care status, is available. Based on its demographic studies, Virelli said the West Kendall hospital is primarily designed to serve patients in four major West Kendall zip code areas: 33183, 33186, 33193 and 33196, bounded on the north by Miller Road (SW 56th Street) and south by Coral Reef Drive (SW 152nd Street), from Florida’s Turnpike to SW 217th Avenue, west of Krome Avenue. The initial campus site is expandable to a 300-bed facility with a seven-story patient tower. A four-story, 62,000-squarefoot medical office building adjoining the central hospital structure, also is under construction. He said the hospital will relieve current patient loads at Baptist Hospital that yearly include 7,500 patients, 1,500 new babies, 21,000 emergency room and 19,000 urgent care cases. Virelli said the most recent patient study showed 98 percent satisfaction with the opening of Baptist Hospital’s new emergency room facility off Kendall Drive.

Editor’s note: To check progress on construction, go to the Baptist Health website; click the “Hospital and Facilities” listing; locate and click on a rendering of West Kendall Baptist Hospital, then go to the “Construction WebCam” link.

The bus stops at the circular entrance to Community Health of South Florida Inc. (CHI), and the elderly woman steps down and enters the front door. From that moment on, she can feel confident that she will have her healthcare provided and coordinated by top quality professionals. CHI offers a “One Stop Shop” model where the delivery of care is seamless, affordable and accessible. CHI offers family medicine, pediatrics, ob-gyn, pharmacy, dental, vision, radiology (fluoroscopy, ultrasound and mammography), urgent care, HIV/AIDS treatment and counseling, and behavioral health services (adult/children mental health and substance abuse treatment and 24 hours crisis intervention). Prior to 1971, when CHI was established as a private not-for-profit healthcare organization to provide service to the uninsured and underinsured residents of a growing South Miami-Dade County, indigent residents of South Miami-Dade County had to travel up to 45 miles to Jackson Memorial Hospital to receive healthcare services. Many died on the way. An effort was begun by a group of local residents who were determined to eliminate this barrier to an individual’s right to receive quality, accessible and affordable healthcare. CHI subsequently was designed to reduce this major disparity. Among those leaders was Doris Ison, for whom CHI’s principal facility is named. Community Health of South Florida

Inc., now 38 years old, is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States, providing affordable quality primary and behavioral health services to residents of rapidly growing South Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. CHI operates seven primary healthcare facilities as well as 27 school-based and several outreach programs. CHI employs more than 670 dedicated and caring professionals. It is culturally and linguistically diverse, representing more than 30 different cultures. All doctors are board-certified or board eligible and their quality of care is accredited by the Joint Commission, the same organization that accredits hospitals. During 2008, CHI provided integrated healthcare services for over 65,700 residents of South Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, representing more than 335,647 patient care visits. CHI primary care service area extends as far north as Kendall Drive and south to Key West, and as far north as Miller Drive for behavioral healthcare services. A new chapter in the history of CHI is being written, enabling members of the community to make a personal contribution and impact in the health of neighbors. You are encouraged to visit CHI, and consider becoming a volunteer, and join the “Wave of People Making A Difference.” For more information about CHI and a private tour, call Romanita Ford, director of Marketing and Public Relations at 305-252-4853.

Find incredible personal income opportunities with Arbonne BY LISA SMITH Arbonne is a career choice that really works! You set your own hours and chart your own income course with Arbonne. As a widowed mother of two, I joined Arbonne in 2005. The income I realize allows me to work from home and be available as a fulltime mother of two very active teenagers. My associate Missi Smith has been able to more than replace the income she was realizing as the result of a 21-year retail career. This is not just a business for parents who want to stay home with their children. Although we have many women and men who want to work at home because of the flexibility it offers a family lifestyle, many of our consultants are simply adding an additional stream of income. We have a diverse team of men and women from many professional backgrounds including teachers, physicians, salon and spa owners, health care professional, attorneys, corporate executives, and retirees. Miami is a market just waiting for growth of Arbonne International products. We envision exponential expansion of our client base in the next few months. We are actively looking for those who are willing to take the lead and realize the profits. We are particularly interested in recruiting Arbonne Independent Consultants familiar with the Latino Market. Arbonne International, a network marketing company that distributes pure, safe, and beneficial skincare, cosmetics, personal care, weight management, anti-aging, nutrition, and wellness products. In 2008, Arbonne International sold more skin care products in the US and Canada than any other manufacturer in the world.

Arbonne Consultants get ready to test drive a Mercedes Benz.

Robert Kyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, notes that network marketing grows when the economy slumps. Arbonne is a good example of this fact as the company signed on more Independent Consultants in the month of January 2009 than ever before. The attraction is the low startup/monthly expense, quick learning curve, and incredible income potential. Arbonne is a company of choices. It is a 29-year-old company that offers over 450 consumable products that are unparalleled in quality and effectiveness in the health and wellness industry. Consultants have the opportunity to “be their own boss” and partake in a lucrative payout plan. Also, the company is just beginning its international expansion and is expecting tremendous growth over the next 10 years. According to Harvest Partners, a private equity firm specializing in investments in management buyouts and growth capital financings, Arbonne’s sales are projected to double by the end of 2010. What does this mean to you? Amazing opportunity! Lisa Smith, Regional Vice President of Arbonne International Miami, is looking to hear from you. Dave Mason (left) and Ivan Kivitt run Friendly Wheels, a private transportation service. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Ivan Kivitt and Dave Mason run a personalized transportation service that takes people who don’t have their driver’s license or a car to where they want to go and picks them up for the return trip. “We can be there by the hour or for the day,” Kivitt said. “We make it very easy. It’s a very happy service. If we take them grocery shopping, we’ll carry the grocery bags to the car and into the house. We will take them to pay their bills, doctor’s appointments. We’re at their service. Whatever they need.” The Doral-based Kivitt said they will be available anywhere in Miami-Dade and even to Fort Lauderdale. “They call us. We will pick them up and take them there,” he said. “If they want to go to Hollywood, we will wait. Especially with doctor’s appointments; this will be very helpful.” The idea is to have a nice service for those who would otherwise have to rely on public transportation or taxis. “I think this is a needed service,” he said. “It would be a very moderate price. We will work out the price for them, for an hour or two hours at a time.” The concept for Friendly Wheels came to Kivitt after he had to help a relative who had no transportation one day. “I said, ‘You know what, this is a good idea,’” he said. “We’re using a 2008

Honda Accord. It has air conditioning, stereophonic sound… it has everything for their convenience.” He and Mason don’t mind if they transport one person or two. And if passengers have a music preference, that’s what will be played during the ride. “This is personal service,” Kivitt said. “This is not a van. It’s going to become a very personalized friendly atmosphere. It will be a good relationship between the client and the driver.” If the business takes off, there is another car and another driver that can be called in. “I feel very positive about it,” he said. “It will be one-on-one. We’re going to care about the client.” Clients might find Mason’s voice to be familiar. He is an actor who was the voice of Strawberry Shortcake for many years and he has done many voiceover parts. Kivitt has had a number of careers in the past. He used to run the Merry Go Round Playhouse and Children’s Theater in West Kendall for many years and he has been a cruise director and a lecturer who talks about the cruise ships and the port. He has written a number of plays and is writing a new book, titled Diary of a Kept Cat. “This is something new to add to my resume,” he said. “I think it will be a lot of fun.” For more information about Friendly Wheels, call 305-790-6880.

The key components of President Obama’s program to stabilize the housing market through foreclosure reductions are loan modifications and refinancing. This initiative is called the Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan (HASP). The program is also called “Making Home Affordable.â€? Eligibility is based on the following: • The property must be your homestead—your primary place of residence. • The amount you owe on your property must be equal to or slightly less than the value of the property. • There must be sufficient income to begin paying a new mortgage payment. • The original loan must have originated on or before January 1, 2009. • There must be a hardship. • The unpaid principal balance must be $729,750 or less. • Your mortgage payment must be more than 31% of your gross monthly income. Aside from these eligibility requirements, here are some of the questions I answer daily about the “Making Home Affordableâ€? program. 1. Do I have to stop paying my mortgage to qualify for a modification? Technically, NO. I would love to say that lenders are providing loan modifications to all individuals that are current on their payments and meet the above qualifications, but this is not true. There are several lenders that have given loan modifications to those that are current. However, the majority of lenders are giving priority to those that are at risk of losing their home for nonpayment due to some kind of hardship. I will never advise my client to stop paying their mortgage because there are ramifications. Non-payment will affect your credit score and foreclosure proceedings will commence. Therefore, for those who believe they have no alternative but to stop paying the mortgage, please consult with your lender or seek the advice of an attorney first.

2. Will my equity line be modified together with my first mortgage? No. The loan modification program is only for the first mortgage. The second mortgage or an equity line will need to be negotiated directly with the Lender or Servicer. It is best to modify the first mortgage before negotiating the second. It makes no sense to start modifying the second without knowing if you can even afford the first mortgage payment. 3. What type of interest rate is being offered through the ‘Making Home Affordable program? The interest rate may go as low as 2%. The purpose is to get you an affordable payment. The “Making Homes Affordable program works to first reduce the rate of interest, second the term of the loan, and third the principal of the loan. Each step will be taken as needed depending on your particular situation and financial status. 4. Will I have to pay the property taxes and house insurance separately? No. The new loan payment will include a monthly escrow amount for the payment of property taxes and insurance. This is a requirement. 5. What will happen to all my past due amounts, late fees and/or penalties? Those that qualify for a loan modification through the “Making Home Affordable program will not have to pay past due late fees. All other costs such as unpaid taxes, past due interest, etc., are usually added to the amount you owe. This also the case for many loan modifications that are not through the “Making Home Affordable program. The most important information to be gained from this article is that there are options available. The hardest part may be in acknowledging that you need help. We are all in this together and together many things can be accomplished. My best advice is to call an attorney for a consultation. Know what is available to you and then plan your next steps accordingly. For more information and a free consultation call 305-254-4492. Attorney Dania S. Audi A6 upgraded with fuel-efficient engines Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Just about everybody says the Audi A6 sedan is a great car to drive. It’s also comfortable and pleasing to the eye. After a week behind the wheel of the A6, we can only add our vote to the growing list of believers. For 2009, Audi has upgraded and revamped the A6, adding more efficient engines that cut fuel consumption by about 15 percent and improving the suspension by installing a new high-tech assistance system that gives the driver even greater control. The A6 has been a standout for Audi in the luxury sport sedan segment and the new model comes with several new styling accents, including a single-frame grille, bumpers, air vents and fog lights. The available daytime running lights have been redesigned as horizontal strips, each with six xenon LEDs. Other options

include Audi adaptive headlights, a cornering light system, and the high-beam assistant that automatically switches between the high and low beams. An aluminum-colored molding along the sides emphasizes the A6’s contour, while the lip on the trunk, integrated chrome strip on the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipes are part of the revamped rear end. The interior of the A6 is spacious and elegant, and there is a lot of attention to detail. The armrests, for example, are soft and plush for extra comfort and the integrated headrest system reduces the danger of whiplash. Additionally, the seats can be upholstered with a new material and sport seats are available in Valcona leather. The instrument panel has highresolution graphics and a new frame to better accent the display. Chrome trim throughout, even on the steering wheel spokes, keys the overall luxury and inlays are available in either faux aluminum or luxury wood. The rear seats are also plush and the L-shaped headrests improve the driver’s rear view visibility. Audi offers a broad range of engine choices for the A6 — six gas and four

diesels that use direct fuel injection, and cutting-edge FSI, TFSI and TDI technologies in a choice of four, six or eight cylinders, with stick shift, Tiptronic or highefficiency Multitronic transmission technologies available. At the same time, engineers have added new measures that cut fuel consumption for all A6 engines by about 15 percent. The smallest A6 gas engine is the 170hp 2.0 TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder and the most powerful is the 350-hp 4.2 liter FSI V-8 engine. In the middle are two FSI V-6 engines — the 2.8 liter 190 hp version or the 3.0-liter 220 hp copy. Both fea-

ture the innovative Audi Valvelift System (AVS), which manages the inlet valve timing so that there is more torque and less fuel consumption. The 3.0 TFSI comes with Tiptronic and Quattro, and clocks 060 in 5.9 seconds. Pricing on the Audi A6 ranges from $45,100 to $60,950, depending on engine, transmission and drive system.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES

social worker, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or similar... Call Susan: 305.661.9100

Aries - The answer to a money problem seems to hit you like a bolt out of the blue, but your strange or sudden ideas this week come and go like wildfire, and they may not be ready for immediate action. Don't be impatient if you cannot immediately change a major investment plan.

Libra - You have money coming in and going out at nearly the same pace. You may be frustrated, but there are ups as well as downs this week so don't get too wrapped up in any unexpected setbacks. There is some lucky energy in the "investment and debt-load" sector of your chart.

KENDALL OFFICE SPACE

Taurus - You and your partner are going to have to talk. Yes, one of "those" talks. The kind that you cringe from. It won't be the nightmare you make it out to be - unless you try to avoid it. You can be your own worst enemy this week, so be a listener rather than a talker. Don't let yourself get defensive.

Scorpio - You will find that the true source of your identity as a person comes from family and loved ones. It is not too late to spend some more time and energy with your family - they are overdue for some quality time with you. A long-distance telephone call could bring good news.

200-7,500 sq/ft We will beat any lease deal in the area. Hurricane protected Buildings.

Gemini - You may wish you could escape

Sagittarius - Your intuition may be telling

the office this week. Your energies will be much more active for play and distraction than they will be for focused work or hard labor. You may be able to finagle some free time over lunch or after work for a sporting event.

you to confront a loved one who is in some kind of self-caused trouble, but it may be best to wait a bit before you speak your mind. There may be financial changes coming that will help you clarify things for everyone's benefit.

Cancer - You want to get out for a little fun and recreation this week but you may be short on cash due to some unexpected bills, expenses or a delayed cheque. You may find an inexpensive way to have fun by taking a short trip to a local bookstore, library or taking in a class.

Capricorn - You will find that a friend or companion does not share your core values, and there are likely to be arguments over money or religion this week. If you want to avoid a scene, avoid those two topics. Borrowing or lending money between friends is extremely risky.

Leo - There will be wake-up call for a family member who has gotten stuck in a rut. They may be quite determined to hang onto the status quo, despite all the evidence around them. Let go, and let fate step in. There is nothing like a cosmic kick in the pants to motivate some people.

Aquarius - You have a wonderful opportu-

Virgo - You might not want to answer the phone right now. It's still ringing off the hook, but right now, people are cranky and erratic, even at times irrational, and you may not want to have to deal with some of the rude or inconsiderate verbiage that may be directed your way.

nity to improve your career prospects, but you are not sure if it is the right time to move. If you have the time, take the time to step back and think about your choices. A sudden change could bring benefits and unexpected challenges.

Pisces - If you are not traveling soon, it may be time to head back to school. You are thinking about a major long-term commitment to improve your education and expand your horizons, whether that is something formal, or something you do at home in your spare time.
