ith the kids jingle belling and everyone telling you to “be of good cheer,” December is the most wonderful time of the year in Coral Gables. Miracle Mile in Downtown Coral Gables is adorned with toy soldiers, twinkling lights and floral holiday decorations in main street corners. Shops and restaurants are welcoming those holiday greetings and happy meetings, especially during Gallery Night on Friday, Dec. 5. There’s caroling out in the streets. The 2008 Junior Orange Bowl Caroling Competition brings six nights of free concerts on the steps of the 550 Biltmore Way Building. The heartwarming competition starts on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m., and continues nightly until Sunday afternoon,

Dec. 7, with performances starting at 3 p.m. The winners of the 2008 competition return for a short program and to accept awards on Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 7 p.m. The holiday season will be in full swing in Coral Gables on Friday, Dec. 5, with the Holiday Tree Lighting taking place at Merrick Park in front of City Hall. Activities will be ongoing from 5 to 10 p.m. at Holiday Park with carnival games and rides, face painting, cartoon artist, arts and crafts activities. The Miami Children’s Theater showstopping performance of the Best Christmas Show Ever kicks off the stage performances at 5 p.m., followed by excerpts from The Nutcracker by Maria Verdeja School of the Arts at 5:30 p.m., then songs from Mary Poppins and Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang starting at 6

oral Gables resident Ray Corral has made his mark as a musician, artist and entrepreneur. A graduate of Coral Gables Senior High School, this Cuban-American humbly describes himself as a poor student who was lucky to graduate but fortunate to have teachers who liked him, a mother who taught him he could do anything he set his mind to, and a father who taught him a strong work ethic. While Corral’s grades in high school do not reflect it, he is obviously a superior student in all endeavors for which he has a passion — music and art. RAY CORRAL As a musician who has collaborated on many albums and toured with Madonna and other artists as a lead percussionist, Corral had no formal music training. He learned by watching. Having great people skills and an innate talent were also keys to his success. His first gigs were at top night clubs that eventually lead to jobs and tours with Universal Studios

Join in the fun of the Junior Orange Bowl Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The Junior Orange Bowl Committee invites the community to join in the fun during this festival season. With a variety of events from which to choose, volunteers will have a broad range of activities sure to peak their interest — from world-class tennis (Dec. 14 -23) and international golf invitational (Dec. 27-30) to the showcase event, the Junior Orange Bowl Parade, on Dec. 30. In fact, the Junior Orange Bowl Parade deadline is fast approaching for float, unit and band applications. Those wishing to participate in this year’s parade should contact Natalya at the JOBC office, 305 662-1210. Phillis Oeters , first vice chair of the Orange Bowl Committee, and Gables Rotarian L o u i s B o u e , shared the Orange Bowl Committee’s 75-year history as guest speakers during a recent Rotary Club meeting at the Westin Colonnade. The crowd enjoyed a beautiful video presentation providing the audience with a historical perspective on this organization that provides South Florida with an economic impact

of more than $200 million. The Orange Bowl was founded in 1934 by Keith Phillips, the very same man who started the Coral Gables Rotary Club, and the grandfather of current Rotarian Keith Phillips. The OBC has hosted 18 national championships and 15 Heisman Trophy winners. This year is an especially big year for the committee with the FedEx Orange Bowl Classic on Jan. 1, 2009, and then, seven days later, the BCS National Championship game. Need tickets? Go online and get waitlisted. They are a hot items and very difficult to get. At this time of Thanksgiving, it is appropriate to speak of those who give back throughout the year. Following a presentation at Gables Kiwanis about an organic gardening project at Miami Christian School (MCS) by Dr. Teri Logan , Coral Gables Kiwanian L ynn Bauer made a donation on behalf of the club to support the pilot program that will serve to teach the MCS students about more than just gardening. In fact, this curriculum and pilot project designed by Remy Dou at MCS, has blossomed an international philanthropic and cultural exchange with Sunil’s Home. Sunil’s Home, an orphanage in India supported by Lynn Bauer, Rod Hildebrandt, Matthew Meehan, and other local residents, has captured the hearts of the elementary students at MCS who will be donating half of the proceeds from the sale of their organic garden produce to the orphanage. Recently, Bauer visited Miami Christian and brought along photos of the orphans who were rescued by Sunil and his wife from life on the streets. During her presentation, Bauer asked the children to take off their shoes, handing them newspaper and then giving them a small cracker, she asked the children to imagine this. The newspaper is what the orphans used for a bed as well as for protection from the cold and rain. She told them, the orphans had no shoes, few clothes and that they had to scavenge for a morsel of food from garbage cans, sometimes fighting off wild dogs. It made an impression so great that the children already are asking about what they can send for the holidays. In fact, the second grade class sold lemonade and already has donated more than $100 to Sunil’s home from that one initial fundraiser. It seems Bauer has now adopted another group of children at MCS who taught her some new games to teach the orphans on her next trip to India in January. Using the Internet, MCS stu-

dents will be in communication with Sunil’s students, who are planting a garden for the first time, although conditions do not allow for them to tackle an organic garden at this time. Also giving back, GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club held a Pot Luck Dinner on Nov. 19 that served to prepare Thanksgiving baskets for the needy and collect toiletries for the Agape women. Members brought covered dishes for dinner as well as bags upon bags for nonperishable groceries for the baskets. A grocery certificate also was included for the families to buy their own perishable needs. Among the many helping out that evening were Dr. Iris Tor res, Barbara Lapsley, Jo Burke, Claire Whitehurst, Andrea Young, Debi W ilbor n, Car men Suar ez , Cer es Campbell , Dor othy Thomson , Patty B r ewer , Mayra Dominguez , Marianne Gr unwaldt , Aminta Konamicz, Vicki McGroar ty and Patricia Pear t, to mention a few. Congratulations to Carol Damian, professor and former chairperson of FIU’s School of Art + Art History. Damian was named director and chief curator of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University located on the University Park Campus. Damian, a respected member of Miami’s arts community, has served as interim director of the Frost since May, and curator of the museum’s permanent collection since 2006. Damian was tapped by Berkman earlier this year to head the Frost as it geared up for the Nov. 29 opening of its spectacular new — the 46,000-square-foot building designed by internationally acclaimed design director Yann Weymouth of global architectural firm Hellmuth Obata + Kassabaum (HOK). of gallery space. The museum opens with six exhibitions including Modern Masters from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Frost is the first stop on a national tour for the show. and Madonna as well as a music studio in Miami. While music is in his blood, Corral’s artistic talents go far beyond music. During a tour break, Corral was renovating his home and experimented with broken tile to create a back splash. The success of that project generated the new goal to become a mosaicist. By performing at local nightclubs, Corral gained the capital needed to embark on this new career while he acquired business acumen along the way. Corral studied with Luigi Scodeller, a key figure in the history of Mexican mosaic art, and then, in Miami, formed his own company Mosaicist: Architectural Mosaic Planning and Design. From that small project on a kitchen wall with some broken tile 10 years ago, Corral now owns a mosaic enterprise that installs several hundred glass mosaic pools every year, mainly in South Florida and the Caribbean. His company specializes in swimming pool mosaic finishes and murals, commercial wall mosaic murals, and church mosaic work. Corral has certainly found his calling in mosaic art and has done work for prominent figures such as Gloria Estefan and Julio Iglesias. Corral even has his own factory in Cuernavaca,

Mexico, that makes smalti, a glass that can come in 1,000 colors that he uses for his mosaic. Corral chuckles as he recounts his first meeting with the Society of American Mosaic Artists. For an art that is handed down from generation to generation, this young man turned heads when he appeared at his first event. For someone so accomplished, they certainly expected a much older person. You already may have seen his work. Corral recently was commissioned by affordable housing developer Lou Wolfson, of Pinnacle Housing, to create the six-story tall work of art that you can not miss as you travel south on I-95 near 79th Street. Look for the incredible mosaic of a man playing a guitar. Corral is now working with the City of Miami to create an inspirational mural that tells the story of Miami and its history and hopes to do work for other locals as well. Corral is truly an American success story and is someone who has just begun to make his mark. One only needs to meet this charming, talented and brilliant young man to realize his potential is boundless. To find out more about his incredible art, go online to <www.mosaicist.com>.

Actor Will Smith shows generosity during visit BY JEREMY KATZMAN Hot on the heels of the Miami premier for his latest film, Seven Pounds, international superstar Will Smith recently paid a visit to Miami Children’s Hospital. Smith mingled with patients in the hospital playroom, handing out stuffed animals and posing for pictures with each child. In the true spirit of giving, Smith also made a generous donation to Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCHF). The amount of Smith’s gift was not disclosed. MCHF creates awareness and generates funds for the only licensed specialty hospital in South Florida exclusively for children. “We were deeply moved by Will Smith’s donation and the true spirit of joy he brought to the many young patients being treated here, said Lucy Morillo, Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation president. “We are very appreciative of his heartfelt support and honored to have such a celebrated figure as part of

our Miami Children’s Hospital family. In South Florida to promote Seven Pounds, his new movie about an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption, forever changing the lives of seven strangers, Smith took time from his packed schedule to visit some of his youngest fans. Much like his character in the film, Smith’s donation will help change the lives of Miami Children’s Hospital patients by furthering MCHF’s goal of providing superior pediatric care to children from around the globe. Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation is a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization with a mission to create awareness and generate funds for Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH), the only licensed specialty hospital in South Florida exclusively for children. Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson invites the community to join her in the street co-designation ceremony of “Rabbi Barry Tabachnikoff Avenue” on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m., at Congregation Bet Breira, 9400 SW 87 Ave. The Florida Legislature approved the street naming for SW 87th Avenue — a state road — between 94th and 95th streets to commemorate Rabbi Tabachnikoff’s contributions to his temple, the Jewish community and the South Florida community at large. State Rep. Julio Robaina also will be in attendance. “Rabbi Tabachnikoff was the mainstay of Bet Breira, a reform congregation, which has been a place of worship for several generations of families,” Commissioner Sorenson said. “Through this co-designation, his spirit will remain close to the temple he founded.” Rabbi Tabachnikoff was the founding rabbi of Congregation Bet Breira, meaning “House of Choice,” in 1975. He was the driving force in the creation of the Bet Breira Day School and instrumental in instilling many synagogue traditions, always emphasizing to his patrons the importance of spirituality, inwardness, and sensitivity. Rabbi Tabachnikoff also reached out to the community by participating in various discussions and shows. For 15 years, he chaired the Jewish Worship Hour, which aired on Channel 10 under the patronage of the Rabbinic Association. As vice president of the American Jewish Committee, he was responsible for interfaith activities and hosted many interfaith TV forums and

dialogue groups with Catholic and Protestant churches in the Miami area. In addition, Rabbi Tabachnikoff participated in the downtown chapter of Rotary, was a chaplain at the VA Hospital in Miami, and was a member of the Bioethics Committee of Miami Children’s Hospital (1993-96). In 1990, he was invited to give the invocation at the opening session of Congress in recognition of his leadership role in the Jewish community and involvement in interfaith affairs. Bet Breira’s Religious School principal, Jeffrey Agron, credits Rabbi Tabachnikoff as a strong influence that made him transition from a legal career to becoming more committed to the temple and his faith. “Rabbi Tabachnikoff was truly larger than life,” Agron said. “He was always building bridges across the community, eager to share his own philosophy and learn others’ as well.” Rabbi Tabachnikoff completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and later became chair of the school’s Secondary Committee. He was ordained in 1968 at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati and was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1993. Rabbi Tabachnikoff, who passed away in 2003, is survived by his wife, Paula; sons Jonathan and Adam; daughter-inlaw Eva, and grandchildren Ella, Maya, Zachary, Ariel and Jordan. Bet Breira’s sanctuary also bears his name. For more information on the street co-naming ceremony, contact Commissioner Sorenson’s district office at 305-378-6677.

Baptist NICU ‘graduates’ return for annual reunion

(Photos by Mabel Rodriguez)

Pediatric nurse Rick Tedlow, RN, aka “Woody” from the movie Toy Story, holds Isabella Perez, 10 months, at the 16th annual reunion of the George Batchelor/Gloria Vasta Lewis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baptist Children’s Hospital. Isabella spent the first three months of her life in the NICU following surgery after her birth. The annual reunion provides an opportunity for doctors, nurses, therapists and staff to reunite with their former patients, and to celebrate the giant strides they have made since leaving the hospital. Approximately 400 premature or critically ill infants, many weighing little more than a pound, are treated each year in the NICU.

At Baptist Children’s Hospital’s 16th annual NICU Reunion, nurse manager Maria Olmeda, RN, (left) and supervisor Sheila Hecht, RN, (right) play with Kiara and Kasey Reyes, 2-year-old twins. The girls were reunited with nurses, doctors and others who cared for them during their one-month stay in the NICU after they were born.

Maricella Giron, RN, (left) and Monica Cruz, RN, get reacquainted with their former patient Pedro Decassia, age 20 months. Pedro, born prematurely at 24 weeks and weighing only 1 pound, 5 ounces, spent the first seven months of his life in the NICU.

Doctors, nurses and staff were reunited recently with former patients and their families at the 16th annual reunion of the George Batchelor/Gloria Vasta Lewis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baptist Children’s Hospital. NICU nurse Harriet Pomerantz, RN, looks through the family album at photos of Prince-Kimroy Smith Jr., age 14 months, with parents Ayesha Jones and Kimroy Smith Sr. The NICU cares for more than 400 babies each year who are born premature or with life-threatening medical problems.

Former RCMA preschooler wins growers’ scholarship The daughter of farm workers, a Homestead Senior High School graduate has begun her freshman year at the University of South Florida in Tampa, thanks in part to the $3,000 George F. Sorn Scholarship from the Florida Specialty Crop Foundation. Lupe Cisneros, 18, was honored recently during the 65th annual convention of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association in Naples, where she was joined by her parents, Maria and Atanacio Cisneros, as well as staff from the Redlands Christian Migrant Association, the state’s largest non-profit childcare provider. Miss Cisneros and four of her seven siblings began their education at an RCMA childcare center in Homestead. Cisneros excelled throughout her public school career, graduating among the top 25 in the Class of 2008 at Homestead High. An honor roll student, she worked weekends at a pharmacy to help meet growing financial demands. She also found time for numerous extra-curricular activities, including the MiniCorps service club, soccer, varsity volleyball, French Club Honor Society and Chess Club. During the summer, Cisneros completed a practical nursing program, passed the nursing board exam and became a licensed practical nurse. In August, she started at USF, majoring in nursing. She plans to pursue a master’s in nursing and become a family nurse practitioner. “I just want to help people,” she said. Cisneros’ parents migrated from Mexico in 1989, searching for a better life in the United States. They worked at Homestead plant nurseries as they raised six boys and two girls and still live in a Homestead labor camp. Five of the children attended RCMA’s South Dade Child Development Center as infants and preschoolers. “I was at RCMA from a few months old until kindergarten. I loved it,” Cisneros recalled. “I remember dressing up, housekeeping and nap time. I also did a lot of dances, and I remember story time because some of the parents and people from the community would come in and read to us. Some of my teachers are still there.” Field trips to the Miami Seaquarium, Miami Metrozoo and the circus also stand out vividly — not only for Miss Cisneros but her mother, who was among parent chaperones.

“That’s the only time my mom got to go to those places. She never would have gotten to go if she hadn’t gone with us.” The Maitland-based Florida Specialty Crop Science Foundation, which awards the George F. Sorn Scholarship, raises funds for causes important to Florida agriculture and the people and communities that make it possible. Sorn, of Orlando, is a retired FFVA vice president and serves on the RCMA Board of Directors. RCMA was founded in 1965 in the Redland farming area of Miami-Dade County to provide children of migrant workers with a safe place to go while their parents worked in the fields. A nonprofit, nonsectarian association, RCMA operates more than 70 childcare centers in 21 Florida counties, serving approximately 8,000 children, mostly infants and toddlers. Children receive the quality care, nurturing and early education they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. English-language acquisition is a priority, and children are assessed three times a year to track their progress in seven key domains of learning. RCMA also operates two charter schools. Agribusiness has been a strong supporter of RCMA since its creation, as neither farmer nor farm worker wants children in the fields. To this day, growers and agribusiness representatives serve on the RCMA Board of Directors and provide financial and in-kind support. RCMA is funded by local, state and federal grants, as well as the generosity of businesses, individuals, the United Way, and other organizations. For more information, visit online at <www.rcma.org> and <www.ffva.com>.

Imagine... venturing on a journey of self-discovery. Nothing inspires a child like the skills and confidence to succeed on her own. For over 50 years, Kumon Math and Reading has helped children worldwide discover their own boundless possibilities.

Job Corps student makes the most of her education BY LEE STEPHENS Agathe Milhomme, former Homestead Job Corps (HJCC) student, earned a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Barry University in August. She was a recipient of an academic scholarship. While attending Homestead Job Corps Center in 2002, Milhomme was admitted to Miami Dade College for two years, earning an AA degree. After graduating from Miami Dade College, she went on to Florida A&M University (FAMU) under the tutelage and mentoring of Brenda Jarmon, PhD, MSW. Dr. Jarmon is the former director of the Department of Social Work at FAMU and currently is a tenured associate professor. She is an author and a former Job Corps student. In speaking about Milhomme, Dr. Jarmon proudly says. “Agathe is an outstanding example of America’s best kept secret — Job Corps. I first encountered this wonderful spirit at her Job Corps graduation where I delivered the keynote address sharing my Job Corps experiences and how Job Corps was my ‘stepping stone.’ “After my presentation, she had the courage to share some of her dreams and aspirations with me. The rest is history and I agreed to serve as her mentor,” Dr. Jarmon said. “Her courage of conviction and her strength of resolve impressed me so that I immediately agreed to serve as her mentor. I am so proud of her tenacity, her spirit of belief, and her drive and determination. She is an excellent candidate for the Job Corps Hall of Fame,” she said. “Looking back, I didn’t think that I would achieve what I have,” Milhomme said. “I didn’t want to become a statistic so I took my studies at Homestead Job Corps Center seriously and used it as a stepping stone.” While at Job Corps, she was involved in cheerleading and was secretary for the Student Government Association. She came to Homestead Job Corps Center with her high school diploma. She chose to study Business Technology for her Career Technical Training, which she completed in just one year.

Agathe Milhomme

She offers some words of advice to Job Corps students. “Everything of consequence that happens in our lives has a spiritual component. Don’t allow your circumstances to be a crutch that prevent you from achieving greatness. Use your situation as a tool of determination that drives you to move out of your situation bringing forth greatness when achieving your dreams or goals. “Be careful how you treat others along the way, you may be entertaining an Angel.” Milhomme now lives in Delray Beach and works as a CTOSS Therapist for South County Mental Health Hospital working with at-risk youth, challenged youth adolescent’s ages 12-18 who have emotional/behavioral problems and who also have mental health disorders by providing individual, siblings and family therapy services. Homestead Job Corps Center salutes Milhomme for her tremendous accomplishments. If you would like to see firsthand the difference that Job Corps makes in the lives of young people, contact Lesly Diaz, Business and Community Liaison for Homestead Job Corps Center, who serves as liaison with local and national employers and community service organizations. She can be reached at 305-257-4807 or by email at <Diaz.Lesly@jobcorps.org>.

A healthy baby starts with a healthy pregnancy BY DR. EARL GABB Did you know that approximately 6 million American women are pregnant each year? Of these pregnancies, approximately 4 million result in live births. Studies show that healthy mothers who receive good prenatal care are more likely to give birth to healthy babies. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is important to understand what you can do to increase your chances of having a healthy baby. Prenatal care refers to the medical care that women receive before and during their pregnancies. Prenatal care is more than just regular health care, it also includes education and counseling on good nutrition, physical activity, the birthing process and skills for caring for a newborn. Fathers and family members have an important role to play in these aspects of prenatal care. Prenatal care means that your doctor or healthcare provider can monitor for and identify any potential problems early on in pregnancy. Early treatments can prevent and cure problems during the pregnancy and at birth. It is important to know that babies of mothers who do not receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weight and five times more likely to die, compared to babies born to mothers who did receive prenatal care. A healthy pregnancy actually begins at least three months before a woman becomes pregnant. It is recommended that women of childbearing age get at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. This amount of folic acid can be found in fortified breakfast cereals. Folic acid can also be taken in pill form as part of a prenatal vitamin supplement. Women should also consume a variety of folates, a water soluble B vitamin. Foods rich in folates include lentils, asparagus, spinach, black beans, orange juice (concentrate is best) and broccoli. Women considering pregnancy should also make sure they are properly vaccinated for diseases that could cause harm to a developing baby such as chicken pox or rubella. It is important that women get these vaccinations before becoming pregnant.

JACKSON HEALTH BEAT Maintaining a healthy weight and nutritious diet is also essential to a mother and baby during pregnancy. Make sure you are engaged in regular physical activity and try to do some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Ask your healthcare provider what kinds of exercise is safe for you to do as your pregnancy progresses. Do not smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or use any kind of drugs, legal or illegal, that are not prescribed to you. Be sure to ask your doctor about taking any medication because certain ones can be harmful to the fetus. This includes herbal and “natural” products, too, because they can also cause side effects. Avoid hot tubs, saunas and x-rays while you are pregnant, and do not eat uncooked or undercooked meats or fish. Avoid or control caffeine in your diet; pregnant women should have no more than two servings of caffeine per day. Teas, sodas and chocolate often contain caffeine and count toward your daily caffeine limit. In addition, stay away from chemicals like insecticides, solvents, lead and mercury. For more information on prenatal care, visit online at <www.jhsmiami.org/body.cfm?id=157> or <www.4women.gov/FAQ/prenatal.htm>. To learn more about our special prenatal care programs, call Jackson South Community Hospital at 305-251-2500. You can also take comfort in knowing that the Jackson Health System is experienced in managing complicated pregnancies at its High-Risk Obstetric Clinic at Jackson Memorial Hospital, 305-5856480, as well as having one of the best neonatology units in the nation at the Holtz Children’s Hospital, 305-5855437. Visit <www.jhsmiami.org> to find out more about all of our prenatal and neonatal services.

Dr. Gabb is an obstetrics and gynecology physician at Jackson South Community Hospital. He received his training at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine and completed his residency at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta.

Merrick Festival announces the 2008 Caroling Competition for the City of Coral Gables. The event is a long-standing holiday tradition for the city, with six nights of free concerts on the steps of the beautiful 550 Biltmore Way Building. It’s how Coral Gables kicks off the holiday season, with the joyful sound of children singing in front of the tree. This year, for the first time, the competition is being presented by Holtz Children’s Hospital. “We are excited to have Holtz Children’s Hospital join our family of sponsors, said Sally Baumgartner, executive director of the event. “Our partnership gives the Caroling Competition another way to involve the choirs in the community and provides additional outreach possibilities for the schools to perform at the hospital during the holiday season. “It’s all about children helping children. And in this case, making the holidays special, she added. Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is one of the largest children’s hospitals in the Southeast United States. Through its experienced medical and support staff, including some of the top pediatricians in the nation, the 254-bed facility provides research and treatment for a wide range of pediatric

medical specialties, with a goal of providing all the support and services parents and families need to raise healthy and happy children. The competition begins this year on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 7-10 p.m., and continues nightly until Sunday, Dec. 7, with performances starting at 3 p.m. Six schools perform each evening. The free outdoor concerts are conducted on the steps of the 550 Building in downtown Coral Gables. Seating is limited. This year the competition welcomes 30 Miami-Dade public, private and parochial schools. They are competing for 21 cash prizes, more than $20,000 contributed by over 30 local foundations, municipal organizations, corporations and local businesses, and with the support of the City of Coral Gables and Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs. The competition is one of the largest events on this year’s Junior Orange Bowl calendar. The Junior Orange Bowl Festival, celebrates 60 years as the world’s largest youth festival with 22 individual events and the signature youth parade. The competition has been an official Junior Orange Bowl event since 1991. The winners of this year’s competition return for a short program to accept their awards on Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 7 p.m. Jack Horkheimer, noted “Star Gazer personality, is master of ceremonies for the presentations.

2009 Mazda3 has European styling, latest technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Mazda3 has been a hot product for the Japanese manufacturer and it’s the company’s best-selling vehicle around the world. With good reason; it’s a compact sedan that looks like it came out of a European design studio and it has all the latest technology, performance and safety features. The Mazda3 was redesigned two years ago and for 2009 it’s available in two body styles — four-door sedan and fivedoor hatchback — and in three different models: 3s, 3i and Speed3. Both the four-door and five-door “s” models have an athletic look, though the four-door has more of a sedan appearance. The five-door is the sportiest model and has a greater appeal to the youth market. Under the hood, the Mazda3 continues with the MZR 148 hp 2.0-liter

engine for the “i” models and MZR 156 hp 2.3-liter for the “s” models. Both 2.0and 2.3-liter engines have a high-accuracy electronic throttle control and sequential valve timing (S-VT). Optimal adjustment of intake valve operation and a variable induction system (VIS) delivers a strong torque throughout the engine’s rev range. Still, the Mazda3 gets excellent fuel economy, 24/32 mpg for the 2.0-liter engine with manual transmission, and 22/29 mpg for the larger 2.3-liter engine also with a manual gearbox. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while the Sport AT automatic transmission is an option for the both the 2.0-liter (four-speed) and 2.3-liter (five-speed), and both offer the driver the option of manually shifting gears up or down. The Mazda3 has a rigid body, with front suspension mountings joined to the fender frame by packets. The suspension combines front independent MacPherson struts with a rear multi-link design with a front and rear stabilizer bar. All combined result in a stiffer, safer body and sporty handling. On the inside, the Mazda3 has very

good front and rear headroom and legroom, with reclining sport-type bucket seats up front and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat. Other standard interior features include a three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls, four-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system, Sirius satellite radio compatible, auxiliary audio input jack, and tilt and telescopic steering column, a trip

computer and power windows. Base price on our Mazda3 “s” fourdoor was $20,595.

Commerce Connection New businesses get the ‘Red Carpet’ treatment BY MARK A. TROWBRIDGE It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, ev’rywhere you go; take a look in the five and ten glistening once again with candy canes and silver lanes aglow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas-toys in ev’ry store. But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be on your own front door.” — Johnny Mathis

T

his holiday season, even Johnny Mathis may have a hard time cheering up our retailers who are faced with the prospect of sluggish sales during the traditionally hectic holiday shopping period. The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) predicts that holiday gift spending likely will be more frugal this year, and retailers know they’re expected to respond with more discounts and sales promotions. Although November-December shopping center sales should increase by 1.4 percent, from $447.5 billion nationwide last year to $453.7 billion this year, the growth is lower than last year’s 2.4 per-

remain, yet they are no excuse for businesses to close the palm of investment just to protect the bottom line. This reasoning refers to the belief that nothing can get in or out of a closed palm. This timeless proverb resonates in the well-known Hot Dog Story that finds an old man whittling his hot dog company’s services down in reaction to an uncertain market, yet only to find that the constant paring of his company’s services has rendered it noncompetitive and subsequently insolvent. Did you know that the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce was founded by George Merrick and since those early days of development it has continued to be the “voice of business?” As the driving force behind this voice, the Coral Gables Chamber proudly of-

cent growth. “This is going to be one of the toughest Christmases,” said Betsy Trobaugh, director of the David F. Miller Center for Retailing Education and Research at the University of Florida. Compounding these challenges are hundreds of stores, such as Linens ’n Things and Sharper Image that have shuttered their windows and doors due to financial woes. “Unfortunately, some retailers hope the holiday season gets them out of their challenging situation — but I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Trobaugh said. The slow economy has affected the luxury market, which in many cases defines our Coral Gables, which had been relatively immune through early 2008. Our restaurants are feeling the pinch right now, as well. Those who used to eat out for lunch every day are now brownbagging it most of the week. Coral Gables is a dining destination and our restaurants need our help right now. However, with the prospect of businesses cutting back on their annual holiday parties, there is an even bigger concern looming large. In recent months, we have lost good friends like Bonefish Grill, The Palm, and City Cellars. Coral Gables is a business community that is defined by restaurants and retail stores. We matured as a community with

the support of these businesses serving as the backbone of commerce. Their strength allowed for the recruitment of multi-national companies, professional firms, and other like businesses that depended on the existing infrastructure of a lively, vibrant community that could serve their employees, visitors, and more. That is why the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce our newly created Red Carpet Welcome program. Designed to welcome new and expanding businesses into our community,

this premier welcome program will showcase our restaurants and retailers to all of the newest employees and consumers in Coral Gables. This is our way of shining an important spotlight on those businesses that have and will continue to do so much for our community. During a time when we need to support our local businesses most, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce urges you to buy local, stay local and play local! Happy holidays and see you next month in the business pages.

F

orida Power and Light’s evolution to more efficient energy practices takes us back to 1981 when they devised a plan to redevelop the way they approach service for their customers. What South Florida’s most well known power company has done in the last 27 years has been nothing short of outstanding. In 2000 their efforts culminated in being awarded the Edison Electric Institute’s Emergency Response Award for outstanding efforts to restore service to customers in the wake of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Irene in October 1999. In creating this vision for their company, FPL focused on various criteria to hash out their goals. These include a management philosophy that recognizes the value of providing quality products and services as well as quality processes in all business aspects, from operations to staff, to its relationships with its suppliers, vendors, and individual business unit assessments designed to help FPL become a high performance organization. A way to create that “high performance

organization” or HPO as they would call it, says to also give back to the community that provides them with the business for the services they offer. They have done that every year by sponsoring the Chamber’s Good Morning Coral Gables annual education special. This event showcases the talents of the best and brightest of Coral Gables youth. During the breakfast event this year, which was held Thursday, Nov. 20, students from local schools all around the Coral Gables area came and represented their respective institutions by participating in the ceremonies and extending welcome to those who were in attendance.

The Education Foundation at the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce also donated two checks worth $50,000 to area programs. Big Brothers Big Sisters and National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. The main emphasis of the breakfast was to engender an attitude of entrepreneurship in the bright youths in attendance. Keynote Speaker David Bohigian stressed the importance of keeping the spirit of America’s youth alive and growing towards business acuity and success. Bohigian is the Assistant Secretary of Market Access and Compliance at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Good will and holiday cheer will headline the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce 12th Annual Holiday Party on December 4th at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. More than 400 people are expected to attend this extraordinary event, where 29 restaurants will delight everyone’s palate and compete for Best Display, Best Cuisine and Best Dessert Awards. This party with a purpose will collect gifts for needy children, teens and seniors who would otherwise not have a very joyous holiday season. Gifts will be collected and distributed to the CHARLEE Homes for Children, His House, Home Instead Senior Care, Merrick Educational Center and Coral Gables Police Athletic League. Representatives from these organizations will return to The Biltmore Hotel the day after the party to select the gifts that are most appropriate for their organizations. The 12th Annual Holiday party is made possible with the support of our sponsors: Presenting sponsor, CoralGablesRestaurants.com; Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union; Kozyak, Tropin & Throckmorton; EWM Realtors; University of Miami – Information Technology; Lopez & Partners, LLC; Becker & Poliakoff; Mercantil Commercebank The Florida Marlins who will be giving out toys for kids and providing raffle prizes. In-kind Sponsors include Photo Offset an Impressions of Miami Company; L & M Engraving and Trophy Company and FrameWorks. To make reservations, please visit www. coralgableschamber.org

Businesses sparkle with Diamonds Diamond Awards showcases the elite companies of the City Beautiful BY LARRY M. NOLAN

T

he Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 11th Annual Diamond Awards Friday, Nov. 7, by adding two new categories to it’s list. The awards ceremony recognized an outstanding Minority owned business. This year’s winner of this award was Lopez & Partners, LLC. The company is headed by Valentin Lopez. He has served the public as an accountant for more than twenty-three years. The company believes in a personal approach and priding itself on treating each individual client with respect. The other new award this year was the Outstanding Multi-National Business Award, and that went to TotalBank. For more than 30 years, the bank has maintained its commitment of growth in the South Florida community. Perkins + Will were the proud winners of the go Creen Business award. This company is at the forefront of designing green interiors for commercial buildings and are the founding sponsors of the U.S. Green Building Council’s South Florida Chapter. The Diamond in the Rough Award went to Bank of Coral Gables. This award

recognizes up and coming business in the area. Bank of Coral Gables exemplifies that by accruing since its opening in 2006 more than $160 million in assets. The Non-Profit Business award went to Hands on Miami for providing a “user friendly approach to community service” by creating flexibly scheduled, direct service volunteer service opportunities. The Princess of Hearts Small Business award was presented to kabookaboo Mar-

keting. This relatively young marketing company — started in 2001— has continuously grown every year in revenue, clientele and personnel. They believe their clients to be their greatest asset. Kabookaboo Marketing has been a Trustee of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce for six years. In 2007 , kabookaboo Marketing won Addys at the local level; among them a regional Addy, which includes Florida, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico.

The Montica Ideal Cut Medium Business award was presented to Sharff, Wittmer, Kurtz & Jackson, P.A. This organization has a long history of community more involvement. The Hearts on Fire Large Business award was presented to U.S. Century Bank. This bank is recognized as one of the 10 largest community banks headquartered in Miami and has been profitable since its third month of operation, a record for any Florida bank. Special thanks goes to Peterbrooke Chocolatier for providing nice, little chocolate diamonds for everyone in attendance as well as Belle Fleur for providing beautiful flower table centerpieces. Trusted Alliance, LLC; City of Coral Gables and South Florida Business Journal, also contributed to the events success. For each finalist Dan’s Video Creations put together a special segment to showcase the company nominated. These videos were very much appreciated and gave a little insight as to how each business was operating at a high level. The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the finalists for being outstanding members of the Chamber as well as the Coral Gables business community.
