he recognition for Mort Guilford has been long overdue. While the writing of this article began several weeks ago, it is unfortunate that he passed away before it could be published. he City of Coral Gables is one of 151 cities and towns earning recognition from national non-profit KaBOOM! as a 2011 “Playful City USA.” This is the third consecutive year that Coral Gables has received this honor for its efforts to increase play opportunities for children. Today’s children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation. This play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically

as well as mentally and socially because children need a place to play every day in order to be active and healthy. As a three-time honoree, Coral Gables has demonstrated a commitment to making play spaces engaging, exciting, interesting and fun. Among the facilities available in the City of Coral Gables for playful activities are the Venetian Pool, War Memorial Youth Center, William H. Kerdyk Biltmore Tennis Center, Salvadore Tennis Center, Biltmore Golf Course, Granada Golf Course, along with 30 other neighborhood parks.
