Burton Hersh helps community with his creativity, compassion

urton Hersh is a man whose compassion already has helped change the lives of many while his creative vision is sure to change the look of our community. An architect by profession, his firm, Burton Hersh PA Architects, provides professional design services including architecture, interior design, sustainable design, historic preservation, planning, urban design, branding and other related design services. A native of Petersburg, VA, Hersh moved to Miami in 1972, attended the University of Miami and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1978. After becoming a licensed architect in 1981, he since has been involved in myriad projects from historic restorations to some impressive new buildings. Hersh is a man of many passions, but two in particular stand out: City of C o r a l Gables’ new streetscape project and Lotus House Wo m e n ’s BURTON HERSH Shelter.

Young chess players compete in the Junior Orange Bowl International Scholastic Chess Championship.

egistration is now open to participate in the 13th Junior Orange Bowl International Scholastic Chess Championship. This youth tournament is taking place on Dec. 27-29 at the Embassy Suites Hotel Miami International Airport. Chess players must be ages 18 and under, and even children as young as 4 have participated in this international tournament. Players do not need to be ranked within the United States Chess Federation’s (USCF) rating system, but all entrants must hold an active membership with the USCF. The Junior Orange Bowl International Scholastic Chess Championship is comprised of local, national, and international participants, bringing people together from all over the world. For many young chess players, the Championship is the
perfect opportunity to not only sharpen their mental skills, but also test their abilities against players from all different backgrounds and nationalities. “Chess is much more than a game as it develops important life skills such as patience, planning and strategy. The Junior Orange Bowl International Scholastic Chess Championship is the perfect opportunity for youths to continue to develop these skills, while having fun at the same time,” said Tiffany Kennedy, chair of the Championship. The three-day event will consist of multiple rounds of play which will include variations of traditional chess, such as Blitz and Bughouse chess. In Blitz chess, each side has less than 15 minutes to make their move (as opposed to the traditional 1-3 hours a player is usually allotted). Bughouse chess consists of two teams

Each year, I have the good fortune to serve alongside a volunteer who leads our chamber through myriad special events, meetings of all varieties and topics, ribbon cuttings, personal appearances, strategic planning sessions and so on and so forth. They are more than a volunteer - they are a partner, a trusted confidant, a sounding board and as time marches on, a good and close personal friend. Such is the role of the Chairman of our Chamber, a role filled ably and admirably by John O’Rourke this past year. In truth, the Chairmanship is more than a one-year term; it starts years prior as one learns the
