MAYOR’S COLUMN Mitigation Mail-in Vote underway BY MAYOR JUAN CARLOS BERMUDEZ As you all may know, the ballot language for the vote to eliminate mitigation payments by Doral, Palmetto Bay and Miami Lakes will be a “mail-in “vote. This essentially means that beginning June 5th, 2009 the ballot will be mailed to all of the registered voters in the City of Doral asking them if they will vote to eliminate the mitigation requirement that presently is found in our charter. A “YES” vote will serve to eliminate this onerous payment after the seven-year mark. This means that beginning next year these payments would cease.

here’s good reason for Doral Middle School to get excited. What Nevis I. Binett calls her “awesome group” took top honors for their projects during a statewide competition held by the Family, Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The seventh and eighth grade students comprise the “Blue Dolphins,” a team that developed individual project presentations judged at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Orlando March 27.

he newly created “Alliance to Promote International Trade” began its cooperative effort with Doral-based and other internationally-oriented organization May 15 during the Florida Foreign Trade Association (FFTA) meeting at the Miami Free Zone. The Alliance offers agencies and organizations an opportunity to unify individual efforts, and share the exposure and benefits from all alliancerelated events while providing a platform for members and their clients to present services and products to prospective customers. During the meeting, 17 representatives from 14 different local chambers discussed: • Review and approval of the contents of the strategic alliance. • The Alliance signing ceremony between FFTA, the Peruvian-American Chamber of Commerce of Florida, the Colombian-American Chamber of Commerce and the DominicanAmerican National Chamber of Commerce. • Re-introduction of a table top exhibition event, “International Trading After Hours Business Expo: A Taste of Peru”, to be held on Tuesday, July 28, at the Miami Free Zone, beginning at 5 p.m. “The development of such an alliance with partner organizations to jointly promote and market key programs and events will drive international trade, as an effective means of bringing economic recovery and welfare to our local business community,” commented Rafael Puga, FFTA President.

S. Florida to test organic composting plan BY MORGAN LEVY The South Dade Soil and Water Conservation District (SDSWCD) has been approved to get a federal Environmental Protection Agency grant to prove on-site composting and reuse onsite of organic waste for environmental and economic advantage. We will be working with Florida International University, the University of Miami, MetroZoo and the Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, typical large organic waste operations, to compost food waste, yard waste, soiled paper waste and animal waste with our portable in-vessel aerobic composting equipment. The finished compost will be cured and then applied on specific landscaped sites, never leaving the property. This also has the potential of removing many truck trips to and from the present disposal sites, reducing the carbon footprint of the area. The completed report of this EPA Grant will be provided on disc (to save paper) to over 3,000 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the United
Conservation Counts States, one in almost every county. EPA would like to see this organic waste compost and reuse on site expanded throughout the country. Similar in-vessel aerobic composting of organic waste programs are currently being successfully conducted at the Toyota Manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, with 10,000 employees and six cafeterias. Montclair State University, Oberlin University and Ohio State University have just started a food waste composting program. We do not need to re-invent the wheel for composting. Mother Nature has been showing us how to compost since the beginning of life on Planet Earth, with dead trees and leaves slowly decaying (composting), creating the soil that we now use to grow our crops and replant our forests. Florida, with its major resorts and entertainment destinations, has histori-

cally high occupancy rates with an average of 37,800,000 guests annually (before the recession). The Florida Hotel/Motel Association estimates that there are 4,500 hotels/motels in the state representing 400,000 rooms and employing 850,000 people. These numbers represent a major contribution to Florida’s waste stream. With 208 Miami Beach Hotels we have a great opportunity to redirect their organic waste from landfills to an in-vessel composting facility. I have been working with Dr. Daniel Meeroff of Florida Atlantic University on The Florida Green Lodging Program to promote organic composting for the Miami Beach Hotels, recycling their food waste, yard waste and soiled paper waste. This can be accomplished by their present solid waste disposal companies agreeing to provide separate containers for only organic waste products, much like the separate containers they already provide for plastic, metal and glass. These organic waste containers would be picked up daily to conserve on refrigeration space as required by the solid waste code and delivered to any one of the solid waste disposal sites such as the transfer stations, the South Dade Landfill, the Medley Landfill, the Resource Recovery Facility (MiamiDade owned incinerator operated by Montenay Corp.) or the North Dade Landfill. At each of these locations, the organic waste would not be co-mingled with other solid waste, but would be composted with in-vessel aerobic composting equipment. These in-vessel aerobic composters would be purchased and operated by the county or by a solid waste company. The finished compost at each of these locations would be marketed by the South Dade Soil and Water Conservation District to the local agricultural community, local golf courses, parks and to local landscapers who would use it as a soil supplement to con-
serve water, provide slow release nutrients and reduce the volume of commercial chemical fertilizers that leach into our surface and subsurface waters. By recycling their organic waste, hotels will receive additional credits towards their Green Lodging Program. The benefits for such a composting program far outweigh the costs. The hotels would receive a lower disposal fee in return for separating the organic waste from the rest of the waste stream. The plastic, metal. glass, clean paper and cardboard are all recyclable and are already being collected in special containers. Zero Waste For Miami Beach Hotels is possible and is presently desired by management. The waste companies already advertise their commitment to the environment. The time is overdue for them to walk the walk and direct the organic waste that they collect to a compost facility. The cost of in-vessel composting equipment and producing a very marketable compost product would be offset by the sale of the compost to farmers, golf courses, parks, and landscapers who are now seeking relief from paying a three-fold increase in the cost of commercial fertilizers. Once the Miami Beach hotels are recycling their organic waste, this same program can be expanded to restaurants, supermarkets, universities, schools, hospitals, corporate headquarters and any facility that generates large volumes of organic waste. Composting will create jobs and will help to sustain local agriculture that is the third leg of our local economy along with tourism and commerce.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu now in Doral Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA When you think of the UFC, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, only one name comes to mind: “Gracie.” Now Doral has authentic “Gracie Jiu Jitsu” at Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense. The head Gracie Jiu Jitsu instructor at Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense is Daniel “Montanha” Nycz de Lima a Gracie Barra, a Jiu Jitsu second degree Black Belt instructor. Professor Montanha is an accomplished competitor, personally prepared and instructed by Grand Master Carlos Gracie, Jr. Raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor Montanha started Jiu Jitsu at the age of 12. The Gracie style of Jiu Jitsu was created in Brazil in the early part of the 20th century by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer Carlos Gracie who studied traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu as a teenager under the great Japanese champion, Mitsuyo Maeda (known in Brazil as Conde Koma — the “Count of Combat”). Carlos tested and refined his martial art through numerous challenge matches, even advertising in newspapers to take on new opponents — any-
one and everyone willing, regardless of size, weight or fighting style. Only weighing 135 pounds, his new system was so effective that he was never defeated and became a legend in Brazil. Gracie Jiu Jitsu became popular in the US when the Gracie family brought UFC, the first MMA (mixed martial arts) challenge to America. The Gracie practitioners challenged and beat all contestants including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Boxers, Jiu Jitsu, Kick Boxers, Judo, and even Sumo Wrestlers, changing martial arts for all times. To stay on top of the food chain, you must be of equally good standing as well as on the ground. All MMA fighters and UFC champions are trained in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. No matter what your goals may be, it’s means getting fit, cross training, learning to defend yourself, and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA (mixed martial arts). If so, Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu is for you. Whether you are a complete novice or a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, now you can learn authentic Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu in a safe and fun environment in Doral. We have day and night classes. If the voters do not vote “Yes” the City will have to continue to pay over $10 million yearly (Yes! You read it correctly: ten million dollars per year, in perpetuity to the county). A “Yes” vote means that requirement is removed and those tax dollars stay here. This vote is one of the most critical and important issues the voters will ever get a chance to vote upon in our history. The ballot language will appear as follows:
After voting “Yes ,” mail it in on time so that we can finally put an end to this unfair requirement. Many of you have read for years about this battle and know the importance of getting rid of mitigation for our City. If you have any questions contact me or call me. Hopefully, and with your help, we will wake up on June 26th, 2009 finally rid of this unfair requirement that most other cities in our county do not pay.

FORBES SAYS WE’RE NO. 2! Recently Forbes.com named the City of Doral the second best town to live in the United States. Only Boulder, Colorado beat our City out. This is a tremendous accomplishment for a new city. In the last year we have been named the 51st best place in the country to live and start a business by CCC/Money, the number one city to live and start a business by Business Week and the youngest City in the country to be named a “Tree City USA”. These wonderful accomplishments are thanks to the efforts of our staff, our residents and our businesses. Kudos and applause go ahead to you for making our City of Doral the premier place to live, work, play and learn in our state.
Shall the above described amend ment be adopted? Please vote “Yes” and mail in your vote before June 25th, 2009. Since this is a mail-in ballot we must get the word out to vote “Yes” and get rid of this unfair requirement in our charter.

The Transportation Trust – Moving Forward The Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (Transportation Trust) is the oversight board created as part of the half-cent sales surtax and the People’s Transportation Plan approved by the voters of Miami-Dade County in 2002. Since the passage of the Plan there have been significant improvements to our public transportation system and roadways. These include the addition of millions of miles of new bus routes, the purchase of more than 262 new buses and the funding of 21 municipal shuttle bus systems throughout the County — from Coral Gables to Aventura to Hialeah. More than 173,000 senior citizens and veterans ride public transportation for free under the Golden Passport and Patriot Passport programs.

The first leg of the Metrorail system expansion will break ground this May. This $525 million project — the Miami Intermodal Center/Earlington Heights Connector — will bring Metrorail to Miami International Airport. A new fleet of railcars and Metromover cars are also being purchased. In the transportation area, more than 390 miles of roadways have been improved. A new Advanced Traffic Management System that will ease traffic congestion throughout our community is currently being installed. Traffic circles have been constructed and school safety crossing zones have been improved.
There is, however, much yet to be done. There has been great concern over promises made and the ability to fund those projects. The Trust shares these concerns. The Trust is also encouraged and applauds the candor, honesty and quality of the discussion occurring within Miami-Dade County and the community. Recent events and dialogue sponsored by Mayor Carlos Alvarez; Commission Chair Dennis C. Moss; Transit, Infrastructure and Roads Committee Chair Barbara J. The Business Force for Doral
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S DESK
The first 5 years…step by step! On a clear, cool morning in February 2005, I arrived at the Miami Free Zone ready to embark on a new journey. The “destination,” initiated just months earlier by a distinguished group of local business leaders, was to create an organization that would be influential in fostering economic development for the City of Doral and its surrounding areas. Working together as one team and with the endorsement of The City, we rolled up our sleeves and began the journey step by step. A say ‘yes’ attitude, a clearly defined mission, a strong work ethic, and
most importantly, a group of highly professional and dedicated volunteers, has allowed The DBC to successfully pave the road to long term economic growth. With a clear focus on signature networking events, committees, educational forums, and multiple

In spite of economically challenging times, The DBC has kept its eye on the ball by constantly introducing relevant and innovative programs to assist our more than 700 members throughout Doral and South Florida. On behalf of the board of directors we want to thank the City of Doral and the entire business community of South Florida for all your support throughout our young history. We look forward to our 10th anniversary in 2014. Like the first 5 years, we are determined to work just as hard and continue on this fulfilling journey step by step. ■ Pete De La Torre Executive Director

The breakfast crowd was also treated to early morning music by the Jazz Ensemble from Ronald Regan Doral Senior High. The topic for the student run breakfast was: “Business & Education Partnerships: Framework for a Masterpiece.” Officer Daniel Muñecas, recognized as the City of Doral Police Officer of the Month, led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. In keeping with the students and education theme of the morning, the Keynote Speaker was Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Dade County Public Schools. Ford prexy sees industry change ahead, lower sales BY RON BEASLEY The president of Ford Motor Company was in Miami recently to help launch a new dealership – a rarity in these troubled economic times – and told a round table discussion with Miami’s automotive press that his industry would undergo radical change in the coming years and see sharply lower sales. Mark Fields, Ford president of North and South America, was in Miami for the grand opening of the new Gus Machado of Kendall Ford dealership, and while sounding an optimistic note about his company’s future, admitted that it was going to be a tough row to hoe in the foreseeable future. “For most of the decade, we’ve been running at 16-17 million units of sales on an annual basis,” he said. “This year we’re running at about 10 to 10-and-a-half million units, so that gives you an indication of how revenues have fallen off for everybody. I think we’ll recalibrate what a healthy industry is going forward. Will it be 13 million? Will it be 15 million? Will it be plus or minus five-tenths on that? I don’t know, but I do believe that in the next number of years it will be below 16 or 17 million units.” Fields said much of the reason for the decline in auto sales was because of the disappearance of easy credit for consumers. “A lot of people used their houses as an ATM machine,” he said. “They take home equity loans out and buy an extra car, or rather than get a new car every four years they get one every two years. So I do think that will tamp down the industry. And, cars are lasting longer now; better quality. In our case, our quality is among the best in the business and our warranty costs have dropped dramatically, which means that customers don’t have to come into the
dealership to get their vehicles fixed as often, if even at all.” Fields noted that Ford, unlike Chrysler and General Motors, did not accept any federal bailout money and the company has no intentions of taking federal funds in the future. “We are very much committed that we have no plans to take any emergency taxpayer money, based on our assumptions,” he said. “We’ve taken a lot of decisive action over the last couple of years, but mainly over the last six months, around debt reduction and modifying the contract with the UAW. We have sufficient liquidity to not only meet the needs of the business, but also to continue to invest in the products.” Fields agreed that Ford has benefited from the decision not to accept federal bailout money. “We’re hearing from our dealers that customers are coming into their showrooms, customers they haven’t seen before,” he said. “They’re saying that ‘we like the fact that you guys are pulling yourselves up by your own bootstraps and not taking any of the taxpayers’ money.’ At first they’re coming because of our products, but the feedback is that they’re a little bit concerned about some of our domestic competitors. The good news is that six out of the last seven months our retail market share is up. “Our first quarter results, we still were in a loss position, which isn’t acceptable to us; but, nonetheless, versus the fourth quarter, it’s a big improvement. So, we’re just keeping our nose to the grindstone.” Fields said Ford was committed to developing new technology and bringing new automotive product to the American consumer. He pointed to the recent announcement of a $550 million conversion of a Michigan plant to build an electric vehicle.

Ford Motor Co. president of the Americas Mark Fields talks with members of the Southern Automotive Media Association. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
“That was a plant that used to build our Expedition and our Lincoln Navigator, our big SUVs,” he said. “We’re converting it to build our next generation Focus, a smaller, more fuelefficient car, and a battery-electrified Focus, our first full electric vehicle, and we’re coming out with that in 2011.” Fields said the Focus electric car will have a 100-mile range, making it an ideal car for people who commute less than 100 miles a day. However, he said Ford is not pinning all of its hopes on the Focus. “We’re not waiting until 2011,” he said. “We just doubled our offerings of hybrid vehicles; we have the Escape Hybrid and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid in the marketplace right now and we’ve just launched the Fusion Hybrid and the Mercury Milan Hybrid,
and we’re also going to introduce in 2012 a plug-in hybrid as well. So, gaselectric hybrid, full battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, we feel we have a really strong approach towards alternative powertrain technology for customers to choose from.” Fields conceded that Ford may not have met consumer expectations with past products, but he said future vehicles would live up to their billing. “We realize that in the past we probably disappointed some customers and that residue is still out there to one degree or another,” he said. “That’s why we’ve been so disciplined in making sure that we continue to invest in new product and in better and better quality, because that’s the best evidence, the best foot forward you can put towards changing that perception.”

Aston Martin DB9 sparks memories of James Bond Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS I had my James Bond moment recently when they delivered a gorgeous new 2009 charcoal grey Aston Martin DB9 as our test car for the week. Aston Martin is one of the most storied names in automotive history. Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, the company has a checkered past of fading in and out of bankruptcy and passing through a series of wealthy owners. The name was derived by combining one founder’s surname with the Aston Hill climb near Buckinghamshire, England. Today the British luxury sports car manufacturer is controlled by a joint venture company co-owned by a pair of Kuwaiti investment companies and English businessman John Sinders. Ford Motor Company owned the company from 1994 until 2007 before selling it for $848 million, but hanging on to a $77 million stake.
Any James Bond aficionado will tell you that Aston Martin is 007’s preferred automobile. The car has been featured in many Bond films, which only served to heighten the Aston Martin mystique and appeal. Bond’s cinema love affair with the car started in Goldfinger (1964) when he drove a silver DB5 and continued in Thunderball (1965) and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), then later in GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). After an interlude with Lotus cars, Bond returned to Aston Martin and drove a Volante and a Vantage in The Living Daylights (1987), and a Vanquish in Die Another Day (2002). In Casino Royale (2006), he drives the classic DB5, which becomes his personal vehicle after winning a poker game, and the new DBS in the latest Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. Our test car, a sleek and beautiful charcoal gray DB9 (The initials honor David Brown, who bought the company in 1947 and guided it until 1972, when it again went through a series of new owners.) is one of the best selling Aston Martins ever, with more than 10,000 sold around the world since its introduction in 2003. For 2009, the DB9 retains its classic design, but includes updates in both per-

formance and dynamics. The DB9 is perfectly proportioned, with a long hood and two-seat cabin that create a recognizable silhouette with short front and rear overhangs. A wide track pushes out the rear wheels and enhances the design and styling. Under the hood, there’s a 6.0 liter 470 bhp (20 more horses than last year) quadcam 32-valve engine mated to a refined automatic transmission that has a new hydraulic control unit for quicker and more precise low-speed gear changes and improved low speed maneuverability.
Downshifts in the Sports mode are also enhanced as a result of engine speed matching, which delivers smoother and more rapid gear changes in both paddle shift and drive mode. Price tag on our 2009 Aston Martin DB9 was $208,000. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Jackson Health System – you can count on us BY DR. ENEIDA ROLDAN President-elect & CEO, Jackson Health System
With the recent outbreak of H1N1 virus (swine flu) and the upcoming start of hurricane season, I want to reassure all MiamiDade County residents that Jackson Health System is fully prepared to handle any type of crisis. The hospital system has many procedures in place that are routinely practiced and tested by all employees to ensure we are ready for any possible disaster. Many of the protocols include enabling our Emergency Operations Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the system’s main campus, with key employees from all departments who make decisions on how to best respond to the situation at hand. When the county’s EOC is in operation, we are also in constant contact with leaders there so we can receive information on medical care needed throughout the county. When dealing with a public health issue, such as the swine flu, Jackson Health System works closely with the Miami-Dade Health Department and the
JACKSON HEALTH BEAT Florida Department of Health. Our health system is also made up of more than 12,000 employees, hospital administrators, union leaders and academic affiliates, who are dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of the county’s residents. Jackson also has the resources to provide the highest quality medical care for all Miami-Dade residents. Jackson is home to Ryder Trauma Center, the only certified Level 1 trauma center in Miami-Dade for both adults and children, and Holtz Children’s Hospital, one of the largest children’s hospitals in the southeastern United States. With top physicians nationally recognized for their expertise, Jackson is equipped to care for all members of your family. Flagler Elementary students learn healthy living Sofitel Hotel provided a festive Earth Day celebration for approximately 40 students from Flagler Elementary School when Amanda Cox, a health educator from Doral-based Molina Healthcare, taught a lesson on nutrition and healthy eating. Kids sampled chocolate pudding cups shaped as flower pots with Oreo cookies added to resemble dirt and fruits arranged in flower shapes. Students decorated sun visors and planted a tree on the hotel grounds with their initials carved into a cement plaque by the tree planting. “One of our great priorities is to educate children in the community about healthy living,” said Don Hairston, president of Molina Healthcare. “Part of this means teaching kids about their environment and inspiring them to appreciate it and make it better.”

Biscayne Park inspires Smith School Art Project
Moment of unveiling, joined by Doral Mayor Juan C. Bermudez. Artist Monica Eichmann (rear, center) guided fifth grade students at John Smith Elementary School. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Mixing science and art, students at Doral’s John I. Smith Elementary School created a large-scale fresco depicting marine life found at Biscayne National Park, a connection made possible by teacher and student participation in the Arts for Learning “Get Smart” program. Working together, teachers Sara Montes de Oca, Christina Garcia and Jennifer Cabrera developed the arts-integrated science unit that included a field trip to the Park so that fifth grade students could observe their fresco subject’s environment first-hand. Artist Monica Eichmann guided
the artistic project through a nineweek residency as students used scientific and artistic observations to learn the fresco painting technique, culminating in an original artwork, which students donated to Baptist Medical Arts Plaza, 9915 NW 41st Avenue. On May 22, Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez joined the teachers and class to unveil their creation, a demonstration of the Get Smart creative learning experience encouraged through the fellowship-styled that brings special tools, resources and field trips to classrooms in Miami-Dade public schools.
