he Doral Business Council, the leading force for business development in Doral will be hosting their monthly breakfast on April 10, 2012 at the InterContinental Hotel at Doral Miami. The breakfast will feature the first ever Q & A panel discussion with the three announced Mayoral candidates for the City of Doral – Frank Bolaños, Luigi Boria and Pete Cabrera. Moderated by Univision’s 23 Reporter, Myriam Masihy-- this very personal question and answer session will allow audience members to learn more about each candidate and the issues they support. Relevant information on the three candidates is listed below:

T

Frank Bolaños, mayoral candidate for the City of Doral, was born in Cuba, and migrated to the U.S. when he was just 6 years old. He graduated from Miami-Dade College and Florida International University with the highest honors. He chaired the Doral School Board in 2001, and brought the first high school to Doral, known as Ronald Reagan Senior High. Bolaños is highly committed to education as well as public issues, such as transportation and recreation. Luigi Boria, the Venezuelan Doral Councilman, is another candidate running this year for Mayor of Doral. He is the current Director at the Joseph Business School Miami. Boria has lived in Doral for 23 years and sees Doral as a perfect model of a modern city in the United States. Boria is a strong believer in maintaining the high standards the local schools currently have and has many plans to help Doral flourish

structurally and economically. Pete Cabrera has been Councilman of Doral since the city was founded. He believes family is the most important aspect of a flourishing society and has offered free workshops for communication amongst families. Cabrera has many projects in mind, such as new recreational areas for everyone to enjoy. Pete Cabrera is focused on economic growth in Doral and believes that respect and teamwork within Government must be present in order for Doral to continue to flourish as it has.

This breakfast is being sponsored by: Media Sponsor: Univision 23/Telefutura 69 with Supporting Sponsor: Regus & InterMedia Touch. This event is presented in partnership with the Rotary Club of Doral and The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. This event is open to the public. Make your reservations now. Seats are limited. MAdvances in medications for schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions that affect one percent of the population, are particularly favoring Hispanics and Afro-Americans in the United States. “We are using third generation medications that are not only capable of combating the symptoms and effects of the disease, but also to prevent any type of side effect, preventing cardiac or diabetic complications, which are so predominant among the minorities in this country. This is the most significant advance we have had in this field in the last few years,” assures Psychiatrist Dr. Emilio Mantero-Atienza, medical director of the Behavioral Health Unit of the Kendall Regional Medical Center and affiliated with Mercy Hospital, both located in Miami. Dr. Mantero, born in Seville, Spain, studied medicine in his country and was specialized in the University of Miami in public health and pharmacology with applied biochemistry, as well as psychiatry. Psychiatrist Mantero explains that schizophrenia generally has two types of symptoms: positive signs, such as hallucinations or paranoia, restlessness or

Positive signs were already well treated with previous medicines. The problem had always been with the side effects of these medications and the lack of improvement of the negative signs. “These new medicines act against the positive as well as the negative symptoms, without having to pay the price of some side effects as serious as Parkinson’s, dystonia (involuntary movements), and dyskinesia (abnormal movements), among others,” affirms Dr. Mantero. A very important matter is that these new medications also have fewer side

effects that trigger or worsen other problems that are very prevalent conditions among minorities in the United States. For example, Hispanic psychiatric patients have a higher rate of cardiovascular disease or endocrine disease, such as diabetes, than Anglo-Saxon psychiatric patients. There may be many causes, including genetic factors, diet, and access to health and well-being, among many others. Former antipsychotic medications had a very prevalent side effect which is known as negative metabolic syndrome, in which the bad cholesterol and the triglycerides increased and processes such as diabetes worsened. The new medications do not have this type of effects.

Use The DBC to Network Like a Pro The Doral Business Council is an excellent vessel to expand your network. Six years ago I suffered, as Michael Gerber describes in his book The E-Myth, from an Entrepreneurial Seizure. The Entrepreneurial Seizure is the idea of being your own boss, doing your own thing, singing your own song. Once you are stricken with an Entrepreneurial Seizure, there is no relief. You have to start your own business. And so I did. Why not? I knew the technical work, I knew the law. I made the fatal assumption that if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand a business that does that technical work. The truth is that no matter how good of a technician you are on your craft, you cannot operate a business without understanding and mastering the art of networking. The DBC can help, use it properly. Networking is simple, but it's not easy. If it were easy, everyone would do it, and do it well. But not everyone does. That's because it's a skill, like cooking and golf and carpentry, that takes knowledge, practice, commitment, and effort to learn and apply consistently. Networking is about forming and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships, which brings you new con-

nections with large numbers of people, some of whom will become good customers. Networking also puts you in touch with other resources, such as industry experts, accountants, and lawyers, who can help your business in other ways. The DBC offers networking opportunities throughout our monthly breakfasts, after-hours, spotlights and committee events. As Dr. Ivan Misner explains in his book Networking Like a Pro, “Some people go to these events, exchange a few business cards, then say, “there. I've networked.” Wrong. That's only the beginning. You have to attend a variety of events to broaden your networking base; follow up with new contacts and learn all you can about their businesses, their goals, and their lives; maintain close ties with established contacts; provide referrals, information, and other benefits to your fellow networkers; and generally cultivate these relationships and deep them strong and healthy. That's networking. Only after you've been at it for quite some time will you begin to see a return on your investment. But when it comes, the return is strong and durable.” See you at our next DBC event, I'll be there.

Panter’s Pointers for Spring Swim Safety Spring is here! While the water appears warm and inviting, it is host to unseen dangers. Every day, around ten people unintentionally drown. Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional death for people of all ages. Children ages 1 to 14 have the highest rate of drowning deaths, and more than one in five deaths from drowning are children under the age of 14. Supervision is key. Children in water whether in a pool or a bathtub should always be supervised by a responsible adult while in the water. Drowning is a silent killer. Children who are drowning may not be able to call for help because they are expending all their energy to keep their head above water. All children should have some form of swimming lessons. Studies have shown that formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in children. Sometimes supervision is not enough. Among children ages 1 to 4 years, most drowning deaths occur at home. Most children who die in home swimming pools were only out of site for five minutes. Barriers such as pool fences can prevent children from accessing the pool while out of site. There is significant reduction in the risk of children drowning with a four-sided pool fence. Adults should also invest in CPR training. In the time spent waiting for an ambulance to arrive, CPR can save someone’s life. Adults, alcohol and swimming can be a dangerous mix. In half of adult drowning deaths alcohol is a contributing factor. Alcohol adversely affects balance, coordination, and judgment, all necessary faculties for swimming safely. Alcohols’ effects are heightened by sun exposure and heat, which spring in intensity with the spring season. Panter’s Pointers for Spring Swim Safety: 1) Supervision, never leave children alone in the water. 2) Consider investing in a pool fence if you have a swimming pool at home. 3) Learn to swim, take a lesson. 4) Learn CPR, you might save a life. 5) Avoid alcohol, or drink moderately and responsibly. “Serving Our Community For More Than 20 Years”

The Florida Custom Brokers and Forwarders Association, (FCBF) broke ground Mar. 30, beginning construction of its “Hall of Fame” monument on the NW 14 St. median to honor international business leaders. The Doral-based monument in the heart of its shipping and commerce industries will recognize past and present executives involved with international transportation, a major statewide job-producing industry, described by FCBF leaders as a multi-billion dollar economic engine. Upon completion of construction, the FCBF Hall of Fame Scholarship Foundation will offer scholarships throughout Florida to individuals either serving in the industry or interested in entering the field. Leading the groundbreaking was Jose Perez-Jones, Vice President of Seaboard Marine who serves as Hall of Fame

Chairman; Mrs. Cari Cossio, the Hall of Fame Scholarship Foundation President; and Mrs. Barbara Pimentel-Talleda, Scholarship Foundation Executive Vice President The guests included Florida Lt- Gov. Jennifer Carroll, keynote speaker, joined by District 12 County Commissioner Jose Diaz and Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, members of the economic development and trade organizations, the foundation directors and pre-chosen inductees from 2009-2012. The FCBF organization fosters communication between the trade community and federal agencies to expand trading statewide at local, state, and national levels. “Building a stronger foundation through education is helping ensure the future growth of the international trade and logistics industry throughout Florida,” said Mrs. Pimentel-Talleda.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates. The Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 visual and literary-arts focused organizations across the country to bring The Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. The Artist Portfolio Fine Arts School, of Doral and art teacher, Sara Alfaro is proud to announce that three of their art students achieved awards of excellence. Amanda Barrios, Grade 7, earned a gold key award for her mixed media. Natalie Preston, Grade 8, earned a silver key and honorable mention for her selection of photography and Brenda Vazquez Grade 8 earned a gold key for her sculptural found object work. All pieces were on exhibition at The Miami Art Museum for the month of February. Amanda Barrios’ mixed media works earned a national gold key award. Brenda Vasquez’ “Techno Elephant” sculpture earned a national silver key award. The 2012 National ART.WRITE.NOW NYC Exhibition, showcasing National Gold Medalist work, will be on display in New York City in June 2012 coinciding with the national celebration at Carnegie Hall on June 1, 2012. Approximately 300 works of art and more than 50 works of writing from the National Award winners will be included in the exhibition.

• Fitness & Defense • Hazards of Kids Drinking Soda

Julio G. Anta GET FIT WITH ANTA To raise healthy and fit children, drop carbonated sodas from their eating habits. As a child, I never drank any type of soft drink. They were even prohibited in school cafeterias. Like most adults, I later became addicted, maybe because I never liked coffee and used soda as an intake for caffeine. I know it’s hard to believe a CubanAmerican doesn’t drink coffee. I guess I was blessed not to like its taste as a youngster. However, as an adult, I would easily drink up to four large glasses of diet soda at a restaurant. (Why not? They gave free refills!). I personally stopped drinking soda over 10 years ago and now feel much better for it. I have never let my own children drink sodas or eat sweets. Today at 21 and 16 years of age, their taste buds are unused to them and they rarely, if ever, taste either one. We now hear people are drinking more sodas than ever before, accounting for more than 25% of all beverages consumed in America. Fifty-six percent of eight-yearolds drink sodas every day. Refills are free in most restaurants; vending machines are everywhere, including most schools; and you see them advertised daily on billboards and on TV commercials.

Studies have shown that soft drinks can cause obesity, tooth decay, caffeine dependence and weakened bones. Even a few cans of soda can damage bone growth during adolescence. Phosphorus found in colas can deplete the bones of needed calcium, contributing to bone fractures in active children. The internet carried an interesting story of a boy who weighed 500 pounds, drinking a case of soda daily. When he stopped, his weight started to go down. Even a single soda each day can create a 10-pound weight gain in a year’s time. Large amounts of sugar can cause behavior problems in children. A 12-ounce can of cola contains 10 teaspoons of sugar. Supersized sodas sold in most fast food restaurants equal two or three regularly-sized drinks. Diet sodas with sugar substitutes are just as bad for a child’s health, fitness and growth. A Purdue University research study reported that artificial sweeteners in diet soda will actually make you gain weight. Various sodas nevertheless remain the preferred beverage of most people (59 % of all U. S. consumers like soft drinks). Yet this is still a very unhealthy habit for both children and adults. Parents must lead by example. Stop consuming this unhealthy drink, and at least try to restrict your children’s intake as well. Community Association Beat

What are PUD & condo riders ...and how are they best used? BY MITCH DRIMMER, CAM Community Association Manager

Do you know what a rider in a PUD (Planned Unit Development) or a condominium contract is? Riders are a part of the ownership document when a unit is purchased in a community with a condominium or homeowner association. Riders give community associations the right to notify a bank when an owner has stopped paying dues, and subsequently gives the bank holding the unit mortgage the opportunity to pay the assessment, adding that cost to an existing unit loan. (This isn’t to say that the bank must pay but its fair warning that notice for unpaid fees allow banks to step in and do the appropriate thing). A typical rider language: “If Borrower does not pay condominium dues and assessments when due, then Lender may pay them. Any amounts disbursed by Lender under this paragraph F shall become additional debt of Borrower secured by the Security Instrument. Unless Borrower and Lender agree to other terms of payment, these amounts shall bear interest from the date of disbursement at the Note rate and shall be payable, with interest, upon notice from Lender to Borrower requesting payment.” Condominium or homeowner association members should think of riders in the same sense of premiums received from an insurance company. Should they fail to pay the premium, the policy would be canceled. Banks holding foreclosure papers will always pony up unit payments due an association to protect their collateral. If no payment is forthcoming, the community association can notify the bank as the unit’s

lender to provide a chance to pay up, just as if they were the agency collecting the insurance premium. However, the procedure to notify banks in this way is rarely used. The Florida Legislature could very easily use riders as a starting point to improve timely collections of units in default. Instead of trying to strip the associations from their rights to collect late fees, late interest, attorney and collection costs, the Legislature could simply utilize what statutes exist to require banks to cover the costs of maintaining the unit and protect their collateral. If the bank wants to postpone foreclosure, that’s their God-given right. Associations then would never really have to engage a collection company or attorney to recover their money, and banks would not have to try to strip associations from their rights to collect such costs. Backed by lots of powerful friends in Tallahassee, many banks have gotten away with non-payments that the association needs to maintain their fiscal budgets. While I don’t know what’s next in the politics of this issue, associations can and should move forward to take title to foreclosed units because the law is clear in that regard. Any association can still recover delinquent costs when banks seek formal property ownership. Associations can also intervene by taking title to monetize unit income through rental programs. They can notify banks of their intent to take action, just as PUD and condo riders say they can. Riders are there for a purpose. So why not use them? ‘Night in Bollywood’ Nets Orphanage $160,000+ An over the top, lavish party at the Coral Gables home of Rod Hildebrand and Matthew Meehan was an affair to remember for the 1,300 guests in attendance. The charity event, “A Night in Bollywood,” raised over $160,000 for Sunil’s Home Orphanage orchestrated for the last five years by Sunil’s Home Foundation board members, including Hildebrand, Meehan and Lynn Bauer as hosts. Arriving guests were greeted with a photo op with a giant elephant before being escorted into the party by costumed figures. Party guests were vying for the best Indianstyled costume. A huge backyard sported tented salons while the pool was covered to accommodate a stage with non-stop performances by such talented groups as Miami Mayhem, Dance Culture and New Century Dance Company. Returning again to emcee the affair were CBS/Four News Reporter Jorge Estevez and Emmy award-winning journalist Cynthia Demos. Former CBS.Four weath-

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

Divorce Coach

My kids are taking advantage of the divorce by using the “I’ll go live with Dad” tactic to get what they want. How do I stop this? You cannot be held hostage by the fear of losing your kids to living at dad’s house nor can you give in to the feeling of guilt from the divorce to give them everything they want. Ask yourself: If I were still married, would my answer to their request be any different? If the answer is yes, take some time to figure out why that is. Is it because you feel guilty trying to win them over, being their friend instead of their parent or the fear of them moving to dad’s? None of the above is a good enough reason to deviate from your rules. The best thing you can do for your child is keep your home life consistent and that includes the rules. Do not allow yourself to be held hostage by the fear of anything. Let your children know that just because of the divorce the way you parent has not changed and the rules are the rules. You are sorry they feel that way, but nothing has changed. Don’t let them see that glaze of panic in your eye when they mention moving or they will have you forever. Take a deep breath and realize they are just testing you to see what their new boundaries are. Don’t fail the test! Now that I’m divorced, I can’t afford the vacations my kids are used to. However, my ex-husband can and I feel like I’m missing out on memories with my kids. Memories aren’t just built during vacations. Try not to get caught up in that mentality; plan special times at home or locally. Start a tradition that you didn’t have when you were married. Your divorce is not a competition. You might be surprised that some of their most special memories are you reading them a book, tucking them

in at night, Taco Night on Thursday or the special notes you leave them in the morning on their mirror. Put your energy into being creative instead of being jealous.

I have bouts of sadness when I see “families” at restaurants, events, etc. I always thought that would be me. It’s been five years; I thought this would be over by now. Well, my friend, it’s over when you say it’s over. Yep, you’re the one in control. Yes, you wanted that life, but there is another plan for you. Start dreaming of your new life. Quit rereading the old story, write the new one! The old adage is worth repeating: Count your blessings. My ex hurt me in so many different ways that I find myself always daydreaming about ways to get even with him. I know this isn’t healthy, but I just can’t get past it. Don’t waste time daydreaming of getting even, visualize ways to get ahead. In the words of a very wise man, “And that’s all I have to say about that.” — Forrest Gump Note To Self: My attitude will move me forward or move me backward; I choose forward.
