Volunteerism… What does it mean?
A
merica is known for many wonderful things. Among them is the citizens’ desire to promote good through volunteering. Volunteering also benefits people to develop their own skills, network, make contact for possible employment, and a variety of other reasons. Almost all Fortune 500 companies allow their employees to volunteer during work hours. These formalized Employee Volunteering Programs (EVPs), also called Employer Supported Volunteering, are regarded as a part of the companies’ sustainability efforts and their social responsibility activities. Through volunteerism, people are working to improve community enhancement efforts, which play a key role in building strong cities. Supporting these understaffed groups can enable them to succeed in a variety of areas, which connect social, environmental, and economic boundaries. Sometimes, volunteering even includes supporting with a small financial donation to be part of the volunteer effort. Both the number of volunteers and the volunteer rate rose over the year ending in September 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. About 63.4 million people, or 26.8 percent of the population, volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2008 and September 2009. Are you a volunteer? If not, what is stopping you? Be part of this growing group that is helping make this world a better place to live in. Help make Doral an even stronger city. Volunteer today!
