HEALTH CARE CORNER Computers and Hands: Dispelling Common Myths BY DR. ALEJANDRO BADIA
LUIGI BORIA
ave you heard that computer use causes carpal tunnel syndrome? There is a near universal belief that technology gadgetry can cause all sorts of hand problems. Both the lay public and most healthcare providers believe such entities as “blackberry thumb” and “repetitive strain injury” actually exist and that common hand problems such as flexor tendonitis and basal joint arthritis of the thumb are caused by repetitive typing or using a mouse. The most common myth is that carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is “a computer disease” and that using your hands for what is now an everyday function for many can cause physical harm. Nothing is further from the truth…. Not only are common conditions like CTS, trigger finger and tennis elbow NOT caused by so called “overuse” or “repetitive stress” but they are actually metabolic and hormonal related issues quite easy to treat — given the right diagnosis and the sufferer seeing the right type of specialist. Furthermore, the rarely-discussed economic ramifications of this myth are staggering. CTS is now responsible for one-third of all money spent on workers compensation (rivaling low back pain) and more than two billion dollars yearly on a condition commonly seen in the general population, but particularly common in perimenopausal woman, diabetics and hypothyroid patients. Also common in third trimester pregnancies, it is usually resolved after delivery and fluid retention diminishes. Unfortunately, work compensation

Mayor’s Statement
Boria Pledges School Safety Following the tragedy on Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Mayor Luigi Boria issued the following statement: “On behalf of the Doral City Council and myself, I would like to express our most sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims of the tragic events that transpired on Dec. 14 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heinous crime. “In that light, I would like to affirm to all Doral residents that the City of Doral will work together with the Miami Dade
School Board, along with the proper authorities, to ensure that all of the needed steps and precautions are taken to prevent any such atrocity from ever occurring in one of our schools. “Student safety is the principal and most fundamental element of any educational institution. Our schools are our children’s second home, and as such, students should feel the same sense of security in their classrooms as they do in their own homes. “I ask that you keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers during these trying times. God bless you all.” — Luigi Boria, Mayor of Doral.
Tree City USA’ Asked by State for Fifth Year The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has recommended the City of Doral to be designated “Tree City USA” for its fifth consecutive year, according to Adam H. Nuevo Centro Gubernamental de la Ciudad de Doral

BY GLORIA BURNS
On the Dec. 12 Feast Day for Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Doral held a massive bi-lingual celebration at the Firefighters Memorial Building in Doral. A standing room only crowd was moved as they passed through the archway entrance beautifully adorned with flowers by industrious and faithful parishioners who donated their time and talent to honor the Virgen of Guadalupe. Children came dressed in native Mexican garb to participate in the mass that concluded with a performance by Mariachis. As an added bonus, the congregation heard for the first time a new CD written specifically for the parish, “My Guadalupe”. Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church is an incredibly large congregation in Doral that has become a parish community despite not yet having a church build-
ing. Thanks to very strong church ministries, the congregation looks to raise the needed funds, very often in creative ways. Most recently, a few talented folks from the Music Ministry produced the aforementioned CD with the song specifically about the Church. The song was written by Carlos Puchi with arrangements by Latin Grammy winner Paul Hoyle and graphic design by Yeshica Yanes. On the CD, the song about the Church is performed in both English and Spanish and is available for a donation of $10. Thus far, funds raised from this CD exceed $2,000. Fr. Israel Mago, Church pastor, announced the church had collected more than 2,300 toys during the Christmas season as donations for the less fortunate in Homestead and other areas of great need. DCS Makes 2A final; Wins Runnerup Title
Finishing the season at 12-1, the 2012 Dade Christian School Varsity football team made school history by advancing to the FHSAA 2A State Championship game. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY JENNIFER MARTINEZ
With a final score of 28-10, the Dade Christian Crusaders left it all on the field Dec. 7 as they competed for the FHSAA 2A State Championship title. Finishing runner-up to University Christian of Jacksonville (after having led for three of four quarters), their toughness, tenacity and grit allowed them to perform on a statewide platform as they battled injuries, cramping, exhaustion and a team with considerably more depth in the finals. Many Crusaders played offense and defense making it extremely difficult to recover physically from play to play. After receiving their Class 2A State Runner-up trophy, the Crusaders received a standing ovation from their beloved fans that were able to share in an amazing season. “Many people thought that we could not make it far because our lack of depth,
but we were determined to prove them wrong,” said senior football player Terrence Alls. The Crusader Nation was well represented at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando by three charter buses filled with drum lines, pep bands, cheerleaders and a host of red clad Crusaders filling the stands in support. This year’s DCS varsity fought every Friday night in order to maintain an undefeated season. Day in and day out, they trained harder than ever before and were determined to make it to the state final game, winning three playoff rounds. The Crusaders finished with a record of 31-5 over the past three seasons and became the first team in the school’s 52 year history to reach the state title game. Head coach, Mike Sonneborn, did not mince words at the conclusion of the Dec. 7 game, commenting with quiet strength, “we’ll be back, I’ll make sure of it.”

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe available in Sport, LWB models Grant Miller CAR CORNER It’s tough to find anything not to like about the new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. It has a zippy turbocharged engine, a high-quality interior with an upright dash design, a roomy rear area with sliding and reclining seats, which means that passengers can get comfortable. The Santa Fe Sport and sibling LWB Santa Fe were both designed under Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” concept, which aims at giving the impression of constant motion. Hyundai designers used a three-bar hexagonal front grille, a low stance and a rising beltline with a roof spoiler and wraparound taillights to create the constant motion concept. Design elements also include a standard chrome grille and door handle accents and bodycolor mirrors. In addition, 19-inch wheels and a twin-tip chrome exhaust are standard on Santa Fe Sport 2.0T. Hyundai designers evolved both Santa
Fe models together, with the differentiating element being the side window shape. The longer Santa Fe LWB has a shape that highlights the increased passenger and cargo room behind the second row seat. Santa Fe also has its own bodyside character lines from the B-pillar back, a different grille design, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips and a flush-mounted tow hitch design. Both Santa Fe models have the same flowing interior designed for passenger functionality and comfort. From the heated rear seats and available eight-way power driver seat, to a standard 40/20/40 folding rear seat back, both have flexibility and a pleasant cabin. Also new for 2013 – and standard on all Santa Fe models with cloth seating – is a YES Essentials seat fabric treatment that provides soil-resistant, antiodor and anti-static properties for added longevity and livability. Special attention went into other interior details, such as an optional panoramic sunroof that allows more natural light into the cabin, and premium window switch trim. The three-row Santa Fe increases second-row legroom by 1.9 inches and cargo capacity 5.6 cubic feet and houses secondrow HVAC controls and vents to increase family comfort, while also offering a stan-

dard 50/50 split folding third-row bench seat with 31.5 inches of legroom. As for power, the Santa Fe Sport offers a choice of a 2.4-liter Gasoline Direct Engine (GDI) engine or a turbocharged 2.0-liter GDI engine. Both engines have been extensively tested in the Hyundai Sonata and provide excellent power for city or highway driving, and have the ability to tow up to 3,500 pounds. With 190 hp and 181 pounds-feet of torque, the 2.4 liter engine delivers impressive fuel economy of 21/29
mpg. The higher output 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the Santa Fe Sport 2.0T increases horsepower to 264. The LWB Santa Fe is powered by the acclaimed 3.3-liter GDI V-6 engine, which also powers the Hyundai Azera. Grant Miller is the publisher of Community Newspapers.
