OCTOBER 2012

Confidence, Faith Built City of Doral BY JUAN CARLOS BERMUDEZ Mayor, City of Doral

s I finish out my term as your Mayor, I want to take the opportunity to thank the people who have made it possible for me to serve. I want to thank you, the residents of Doral, for having the confidence and faith to elect me as your first-ever Mayor. As difficult as starting a city from scratch has been, I have enjoyed serving in this inaugural position to help build this city with you. I always said that we would build the City “from the bottom up — not from the top down,” and I thank all the advisory board members, residents and business people who have served and helped build Doral. I also want to thank the parents, teachers and principals who have helped educate and coach our children. When the city started there were few schools, no baseball, soccer or football fields or basketball courts. Today we have award-winning parks, new and clean streets, a community center, a new government center and public works yard among many other new projects and successes. I have kept my promise to create the most transparent and open government without raising taxes. Through ‘Doral Dashboard’ we have implemented perform-

Reserve Bank of Atlanta-Miami Branch; and Stephen Musolino, Founder and President of Casa Linda Tile. The honorees will be recognized for their achievements during a gala dinner and dance at Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. “As a part of the Doral community, we are proud to participate as the title sponsor of this event that honors such outstanding individuals,” said Sonya Cañas, Mercantil Commercebank Vice President/Commercial Banking Manager, West Region. “We look forward to continue working closely with Doral Business Council and making a difference in the dynamic City of Doral.”

ecently I spoke with a family member about robotic surgery and I was surprised to see what little she knew about this important topic in modern gynecology. Her impression was comical: a robot out of a science fiction movie yielding a scalpel in some sort of spaceship’s operating room. The truth is that robotic surgery has a lot less to do with a robot and a lot more to do with providing a very specialized tool to the operating surgeon. Laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery began over 100 years ago with the idea that small incisions can be made in the body to introduce a camera and diagnose disease. In the 1980’s laparoscopy gained significant popularity thanks to new instruments that allowed the surgeon to operate efficiently. Using long thin instruments through small tubes called trocars, surgeons were able to perform movements with varying degrees of precision. This allowed for complex surgeries such as hysterectomies and even cancer resection. Despite advancements, traditional laparoscopy is limited. Although a surgeon’s hand can turn and swivel (thanks to our wrists), rigid laparoscopy instruments are limited to only one angle. This is a major problem in patients with difficult anatomy. These patients would typically be offered traditional open surgery that involves large incisions.
