nly one Kendall area community council race is on the Aug. 24 primary election ballot.

West Kendall Council 11 voters will choose only between incumbent council chair Patricia “Shannen” Davis and newcomer John P. Arrien for a Council 11 “At Large” seat. There are no contests for East Kendall Council 12.

Miguel A. Diaz, a newcomer in Sub Area 113, and incumbent Beatrice Suarez, representing Sub Area 115, are running unopposed. Diaz seeks the seat formerly filled by appointment of Nelson Diaz who resigned when moving from the district.

A seventh seat in District 11 was vacated by the resignation of former chair Domingo Castillo in 2009, and remains vacant for Sub Area 116. Council members Jeff Wander, Ileana Vazquez and Joseph Delaney hold seats not up for reelection this year.

In East Kendall, voters will renew automatically Council 12 seats for Peggy Brodeur, Alberto Santana and chair Elliott Zack, all unopposed in the primary. Steven A. Tallon withdrew an announced candidacy in Sub Area 122, leaving the seat vacant. The seat had been held by Carla Ascencio-Savola, now running for the Republican nomination for State Representative in District 115.

Three other Council 12 seats are held by Joe Valdes, Jose Garciga and Angela Vazquez.

The Davis-Arrien contest will appear on all District 11 ballots because the seat became designated as an “At Large” position

by Commissioner Joe Martinez’s re-structuring resolution, approved by County Commissioners on June 6, 2006. That action came about when no candidate sought temporary appointment to the vacant post. Davis subsequently was appointed to serve out an existing term, then filed and was elected to a

early a half-century ago, Manuel “Manolo” Capó arrived in the United States from Cuba to open his first El Dorado furniture store in Miami.

Forty-three years later, his portrait warmed the hearts of hundreds of friends, associates and family members when a section of Kendall Drive was named “Manuel Capó Way.” Mr. Capó died in 2009 at age 83.

“Mr. Capó’s story is the epitome of

the American dream,” declared MiamiDade Commissioner Joe Martinez who presented the Capó family with a proclamation honoring El Dorado’s founder and helped to unveil signage designating SW 88th Street from SW 137th Avenue to SW 142nd Avenue in honor of the family patriarch.

Davis, qualified as the only “At Large” candidate on July 17, 2005, subsequently was elected to represent the PATRICIA ‘SHANNEN’ DAVIS seat when unopposed in the Sept. 5, 2006 council election.

“We need to plan for a greener, cleaner and educated township,” she stated. “That means never having to go far to meet common needs. It doesn’t mean ugly redundant strip malls littering every 100 feet of empty space.

It means holding developers accountable for their promises.

“Planning and promoting adherence to beautiful village and town models reflecting our own unique tropical tastes is a good idea.

Making the most of innovative and efficient technology to support and maintain the ecosystem is important.

“If it were entirely up to me, we would spend more money and time bringing every home and every business up to the most environmentally conscientious standards for century 2100.”

Davis, 64, holds a master’s degree in social work from Barry University and is a state-certified addictions professional in Spectrum Programs for FIS Case Management, providing support and advocacy for allegations of child neglect related to substance abuse and mental health. She also facilitates anger management, domestic violence and DUI groups for Lifeline of Miami.

Mother of two sons, she has resided in the Forrest Lakes area of West Kendall since 1997 with her mother, Marlaine Galvin. Her oldest son, a University of Miami graduate, now lives in New York City and a younger son’s

band is completing its second album on the Interscope Label. She often uses “Shannen” as a nickname.

Davis said she “wasn’t going to run again” but during recent months several items on the Council 11 zoning agenda convinced her “historical experience is needed for the council to make the right choice. During a June meeting, I realized running again was the right thing to do,” she concluded when decisions effected both land use and western development.

“The reason why I am running is because I am someone who wants to get involved and serve my community,” Arrien said.

“With all the change that has happened over the years in West Kendall, our neighborhoods are being reshaped in ways that most of us could not have imagined 30 years ago.

This change is exciting to me and I have an optimistic outlook and a great sense of pride for the community we live in.

“With my MBA and real world leadership experience, I am prepared to address the issues and give back to our community.”

JOHN PAUL ARRIEN Born and raised in Miami-Dade County, Arrien, 37, has been a resident of West Kendall for the past 12 years, and married for the same period. He is the father of two.

An information technology professional, he received his bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Florida International University and his master’s degree in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Employed by Baptist Health South Florida for the past nine and one-half years, he currently holds the position of Information Technology Corporate Manager.

Over the years, he has been a volunteer in activities for both Habitat for Humanity and the Hands on Miami non-profit organizations.

Established in South Florida in 1967, El Dorado Furniture has grown to become the largest Hispanic-owned retail enterprise in the United States. With worldwide services, the family-owned company is ranked among the top 50 furniture retailers in the country. Ten El Dorado Furniture showrooms and an outlet center are located in South Florida.

According to its company history, origins of El Dorado Furniture date back to the 1920s in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio where a young Simon Capó, father of Manuel, traded farm products and repaired furniture, eventually cultivating a chain of furniture stores called “Casa Capó.”

By 1950, Casa Capó had become one of the largest furniture manufacturing and retail enterprises in Cuba, and, during this time, Simon’s youngest son, Manuel, married his wife, Aida, later to raise six sons (all of whom attended the Aug. 7 dedication).

In 1966, after Castro rose to power, Manuel Capó fled Cuba with two of his sons, Luis and Carlos, leaving behind the rest of his family, in order to make a better life in America. They escaped the island in a small sailboat called El Dorado. After a treacherous journey land-

ing them in Mexico, they eventually made their way to the United States.

On June 27, 1967, just seven months after their arrival, the Capós opened their first furniture store on Miami’s Calle Ocho (Eighth Street), in the heart of Little Havana, naming the store after the boat they sailed to freedom — El Dorado.

The small furniture store flourished and expanded, thanks to a $10,000 loan from the Small Business Administration. In 1967, Manuel’s wife, Aida, and their three younger sons — Julio, Pedro, and Jesus — arrived in Miami to reunite with the family. Dagoberto, the eldest son, reunited with the family in 1979, after years as a political prisoner in Cuba.

“My father would be very humbled by this honor,” said Roberto Capó. “We thank Commissioner Martinez for his efforts in making this happen. It means a lot to our family and all those who knew him,” said Roberto Capó.

Those descendants of Manuel Capó, who died at the age of 83, “retain the legacy he established here,” Benitez said. “That distinction lives on through his sons, all of whom make up the company’s board of directors, while his grandchildren help run the company’s daily business.”

Coincidentally, the adjoining intersection of SW 137th Street and Kendall Drive was designated as the theoretical center for West Kendall by Community Council 12, preparatory to developing a master plan for the unincorporated area’s future growth.

‘Shannen’ Davis deserves second term Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN Communityy Councilss stilll serve a vital purpose in the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade, particularly in sprawling Kendall with its vastly different geographic areas and population centers.

The detail of land use and zoning changes that shape policy for the Commission (when they listen) are hammered out in public hearings which the Council hears after initial review by the Planning & Zoning authority.

Non-zoning meetings were dropped from Council agendas in 2010 due to an absurd Commission action to save something around $440,000 in staffing.

As a forum for community issues and budgeting needs, that Council responsibility remains on hold until the Commission understands the importance of a separate grassroots forum for citizens to discuss local issues and recommend actions, apart from “voter information” meetings held by individual Commissioners.

For those reasons, selecting Council members remain a vital and important voter responsibility, requiring know-how and experience in making wise decisions.

For that reason alone, we recommend returning Patricia ‘Shannen’ Davis to her seat on Council 11, one in which her leadership has been proven, both as chairperson and in her careful review of attempts to change the West Kendall landscape to benefit a chosen few, often camouflaged.

At the same time, the candidacy of John Arrien, a technology professional, represents an injection of new blood, which is always welcome in civic affairs.Whoever the loser may be, a ready solution is apparent.

With former Chair Domingo Castillo’s seat still vacant, whoever runs second in the

August primary should become the priority candidate to fill the still-open seat by temporary appointment, even though it may take some rule bending. (Commissioner Martinez who appoints District 11 vacancies saw no problem in doing that when he created the:”At Large” seat that Ms. Davis and Mr. Arrien now seek).

We believe it would be a win-win situation to see Ms. Davis seated again on Council 11 with Mr. Arrien learning the ropes from an experienced and dedicated colleague.

Taxpayers asked to pay bus drivers not to get sick R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY I have read a lot of illogical things in the newspapers but a small item the other day in the Local & State section of the Miami Herald really got my goat.

The item was titled “Miami-Dade Transit – Bonuses planned to keep drivers working.” It seems that bus drivers were calling in sick or just can’t show up for work 23.7 percent of the time in 1997. That means approximately 25 percent of the drivers were not driving at anytime?

In the private sector of our economy drivers would be called into the boss’ office and asked, “Don’t you like your job? Don’t you need to earn a living? How can you and your fellow workers be sick or unavailable for work 25 percent of the time?”

So how does the county plan on handling this problem today in 2010? Pay the drivers a “bonus” to come to work. I thought that

was the purpose of a salary.

At first the county tried counseling, nutrition tips and exercises. They were successful with this approach; they brought the 23.7 percent rate in 1997 down to 19.4 percent in 2008. But 20 percent absenteeism is just not acceptable in private industry or in government. Just think what would happen if 20 percent of county employees, or for that matter those in the private sector, didn’t show up for work every day.

How does the county plan on resolving this problem? They are going to pay the drivers a bonus to come to work. Isn’t that another way of saying a “pay raise?” When drivers receive their bonuses what will the rest of the guys and gals that work in the Transit Department want?

Who came up with this concept? You guessed it, the county’s Transit Department and the Transport Worker’s Union. Doesn’t this require county commission approval?

Most county employees, including some union workers, took a 5 percent pay cut to keep their jobs and bus drivers are going to receive a $500 or a $1,000 bonus just for

The county’s logic is that it can’t put off driving the buses to another day; passengers are waiting, so you must pay other drivers overtime to take the absent driver’s place.

That makes total sense. In the office papers can be filed away another day. But busses must run. People must get to work; they need transportation.

Let’s total this up. This means 20 percent of the drivers operating the buses today are earning overtime, replacing those that did not show up for work, who are still getting paid. What a waste of taxpayer money.

What would happen if all Miami-Dade Transit employees want the bonus?

Multiply 4,000-plus employees by the proposed $500 or $1,000 bonus and you can see, in part, why the county must increase real estate taxes and fees for county servic-

Are county administrators and the Transport Workers Union saying that it will be cheaper to pay the bonus than to pay overtime? I would like to see the arithmetic on this proposal.

I have a better solution. Tell the drivers, through their union, that they better start showing up for work, with a normal rate of absenteeism, or some of the 11.5 percent unemployed in Miami will have their jobs.

Catching waves on a surfboard, rafting Class IV rapids, trekking through clouded rain forests and living with indigenous families were only some of the activities that 17-year-old Palmetto Bay student Austin Estape experienced during a recent 15-day adventure across Costa Rica with Costa Rica Outward Bound.

In addition to physical challenges, Estape developed leadership skills and experienced firsthand the culture of Costa Rica. She hiked into a remote Costa Rican village to conduct home-stays with local families. Estape learned about traditional

foods and how to make sugar from sugar cane and tortillas from ground corn.

“It was pretty difficult, but totally worth it,” she said. “It was challenging; I got to see Costa Rica in a lot of ways, and I had fun.”

Miami-Dade County is a national model for making healthcare more affordable and more accessible to residents. A year ago, through a partnership with our Office of Countywide Healthcare Planning and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, we launched Miami-Dade Blue, a low-cost and comprehensive healthcare plan designed specifically with Miami-Dade residents and small businesses in mind.

Nearly 3,500 people are now enrolled in this insurance program. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3,500 people who may have otherwise denied themselves preventive care (that costs all of us in the long run), avoided seeing a doctor until it was too late, or unnecessarily clogged our already crowded emergency rooms because the ER was their primary care provider.

Participants in Miami-Dade Blue can choose from among nearly 2,000 primary care providers and specialists. They gain access to Jackson Health Systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three hospitals and its primary care centers, as well as other respected medical centers throughout our community, including Baptist Homestead, Coral Gables, Memorial and Palmetto.

With premiums starting as low as $112 for 35-year-old men and $124 for women, Miami-Dade Blue has exceeded all expectations and continues to offer so much promise.

But even with all of its success, we know Miami-Dade Blue canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reach all of the estimated 600,000 uninsured in our community. We know there are still those who fall through the cracks with incomes so limited they find themselves choosing between mortgage payments, car payments, food and health insurance. So we have found yet another way to enhance an already successful Miami-Dade Blue program.

With $500,000 from the state, we will now be able to cover a portion of the monthly insurance premium for approximately 400 low-to-moderate-income residents under an initiative named the Health Insurance Utilization Program (HIUP).

HIUP provides assistance for individuals making a minimum of $16,000 and a maximum of $27,000 a year. This limited premium assistance will only go so far, but it is one more way Miami-Dade County is chipping away at our communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s healthcare challenges.

Initial enrollment took place on July 1423, but individuals are encouraged to apply until all slots are filled. Miami-Dade residents who think they are eligible for Miami-Dade Blue and/or premium assistance, can learn more by calling 3-1-1 or visiting online at <www.miamidade.gov>.

Remember, this is not free healthcare.

Participants will still be responsible for paying a portion of their premium each month.

Miss Florida USA lends her voice to cancer awareness

Miami native Lissette Garcia, crowned Miss Florida USA 2011 during the 60th annual Miss Florida USA pageant on July 10, hopes to lend her voice to cancer awareness and spread her message of persistence.

Garcia, a graduate of Southwest Miami Senior High School, is studying at Miami-Dade College to become a physician’s assistant. For the past five years, she has been preparing for her future in the medical field as a polysomnography (sleep study) technician.

She is one of five siblings whose parents emigrated from Cuba more than 30 years ago.

Garcia got her start in the world of pageants as a teenager as a result of her love for modeling. After turning 18, she began entering bigger pageants, including the Miss USA state pageant, which she didn’t win. But she didn’t let that slow her down. Garcia went on to win the title of Queen of the World in Germany in 2006 and Miss Cuban American in 2007.

After returning from her travels, Garcia almost opted not to enter the Miss USA state pageant again. With support from her friends and the knowledge that this would be her last year to compete due to age restrictions as her motivation, she decided to enter.

Garcia hopes to inspire boys and girls alike to be persistent in making their dreams come true.

“It took me a while to reach my goal, but I did it,” she said. “I want everyone to know that you might not reach your goal right away, but don’t give up.”

Barea has worked closely with the Miami-Dade Public Schools system for 20 years as a partner, a parent and a volunteer. Robert Kuntz candidate for Circuit Court judge

After 30 years in the courtroom as a reporter and a lawyer, Robert Kuntz was inspired to run for circuit court judge in the 11th Judicial Circuit, the seat being vacated by retiring Judge Paul Siegel.

The election is Aug. 24.

“I’ve been before many wonderful judges, many of whom I would like to emulate,” Kuntz said. “After 30 years in courtrooms, it occurred to me that most people go to court on the worst days of their lives. So how do people have the strength to walk up those 20 steps of the Flagler [Street Miami-Dade County] courthouse?

“They have faith that when they get to court there will be a judge who is intelligent and compassionate, and seeks to understand them and their circumstance. Judges cannot have their own agenda. It’s a judge’s job to do justice in that particular case on that particular day. I think it’s a wonderful responsibility and an amazing calling.”

Kuntz came to Miami in 1991 from North Florida to work as a journalist for The Miami Review. He covered state and federal courts, writing extensively on trials such as the “Court Broom” judicial corruption trial and the trial of deposed Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega.

In 1993, Kuntz left his 12-year journalism career to attend the University of Miami Law School where he was named the Paul B. Anton Scholar and a Dean’s fellow. He graduated sixth in his class of 340 with the highest honors, summa cum laude, in 1996.

Kuntz practiced with the national firm of Holland & Knight for six years before joining Devine Goodman Rasco & Wells where he has represented commercial clients for the past eight years. He is a partner with the firm and is an AV-rated litigation attorney, the highest peer rating possible for competence and ethical conduct.

“On the career side I represent small companies and locally owned businesses, and on the pro bono side I practice in family law matters,” Kuntz said. “I represent victims of domestic abuse, help secure child support for single mothers, and assist in children’s advocacy cases and immigration cases.”

Kuntz filed to run for office in December 2008 and says the campaign trail has been quite an adventure.

“I’ve enjoyed the process of meeting so many wonderful people in our community,” he said. “I’ve been in 15 to 20 places each week because I need to visit all corners of

Miami-Dade County to reach the voters. In fact, you need to reach more voters to be elected as a trial court judge in Miami than you need to become governor of Maine.”

Kuntz is grateful for the tireless support of his family. He is married to Josefina Elisa de Varona, a Miami native and first-generation Cuban-American who is a high school teacher in Miami. They live in Cutler Bay and they have two sons, Nicholas, 17, and Joseph, 7.

Kuntz often volunteers for good causes and says he “likes to swing a hammer or pass out a sandwich.” He has traveled to the Caribbean and Central America, leading groups of high school students on construction projects to build homes, a school and a summer camp. He also has been active in building homes with Habitat for Humanity in Miami.

Kuntz is a past president of the Dade County Defense Bar Association and serves on the board of directors. He is a member of the Florida Bar, Dade County Bar Association, Cuban American Bar Association (CABA), Florida Association for Women Lawyers (FAWL), and is a board member and author for the 11th Judicial Circuit Historical Society.

The Firm Real Estate Group helps displaced families to find shelter

Zandra Mederos and Leonor Garrido of The Firm Real Estate Group LLC recently partnered with the Opa-locka mayor and city manager to place 33 residents into comfortable and safe housing in less than 24 hours after a fire destroyed their apartment house.

The police and fire departments, Florida Power and Light and the American Red Cross also were instrumental in meeting the needs of these residents in recordbreaking time “Because we have a few properties in the Opa-locka area, we’ve established a good relationship with the city,” Mederos said. “The city manager called us the night of the fire. We identified an appropriate property and started making arrangements for these residents first thing in the morning.”

The night of the fire, the families were provided shelter by the American Red Cross at Best Inn on NW 36th Street. Early the next morning, Mederos and Garrido met with their client, the owner of newly renovated Aswan Manor Apartments, and negotiated the agreement with the City of

Opa-locka to provide the displaced residents with housing.

Families started moving in that afternoon and Mederos and Garrido were there to assist them. Florida Power and Light quickly activated the power in 20 of the newly renovated two-bedroom, one-bath apartments and the new residents received food, cots and blankets from the American Red Cross and the New Beginning Embassy of Praise.

“We were able to act quickly, without attorneys or a long process, to start moving families into Aswan Manor,” Mederos said. “We continued to check on the residents until we were sure that they were all settled and comfortable. It was a happy ending to a devastating situation.”

Mederos and Garrido have more than 15 years combined experience in the residential and commercial real estate market.

During this evaluation, he examines the developing teeth and bite to determine if interceptive orthodontics, or Phase I treatments, are needed. Many children will need no early intervention and their oral health progress will be checked annually.

“Some kids may have a cross bite and a palate expander may be necessary. Some may have a strong over jet and may need braces at that time to pull the teeth in,” Dr. Alquizar said. “I also look to be sure there

are no impacted teeth.”

He partners with the children and the parents at this early stage to determine the best course of action.

“Some patients and parents want early intervention. The smile is important and if an issue is causing low self-esteem, we work together to do what’s best for the child at that time.”

When no early intervention is needed, the average age for treatment is around 11 to 12, when most of the permanent teeth have come in. During treatment, Dr. Alquizar also educates children on the importance of good lifelong oral health practices.

He sees adult patients at all ages and stages because adult teeth can begin shifting at anytime.

“It’s very normal for teeth to shift. If you had braces, a retainer should be worn at night to keep the teeth straight,” Dr. Alquizar said. “I’ve had patients who’ve had braces on three times in their life. For many, the best option is to place a permanent retainer behind the lower teeth and the teeth will always stay straight.”

Denise Barbato, RDMS, has been an ultrasound sonographer for 16 years and has specialized in obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound for 11 of those years.

With her new company, Sound Waves, Barbato is bringing her ultrasound expertise and her state of the art equipment right into the offices of some of the best OB/GYN doctors in Miami.

Dr. Weatherford said that the course of training varies with each individual and can be done in her office or at home with the new NeurOptimal Home Training unit.

“Changes occur subtly. Sleep disorders, for example, can be improved in five to 10 sessions,” Dr. Weatherford said. “Some patients say that the people around them notice changes even before they do.”

She said that Neurofeedback gave one of her patients, a Vietnam Vet, relief from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

UM study uncovers potential health issues for beachgoers

A yearlong beach study led by a team of University of Miami researchers suggests that swimmers at sub-tropical beaches face an increased risk of illness.

The multi-disciplinary team examined the risk of illness that beachgoers face when exposed to recreational marine water at subtropical beaches with no known source of pollution or contamination.

BEACHES (Beach Environmental Assessment and Characterization Human Exposure Study) enlisted more than 1,300 volunteers, all local residents who regularly use South Florida beaches. Researchers divided study participants into two groups: volunteers who went into the water and those instructed to stay out of the water.

The group that went in the water was asked to dunk themselves completely in the water three times over a 15-minute period. A few days later both sets of participants received follow-up calls from researchers, checking on their health and wellbeing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We found that when swimming in subtropical beach areas with no known pollution or contamination from sewage or runoff, you still have a chance of being exposed to the kind of microbes that can make you sick,â&#x20AC;? said Dr. Lora Fleming, co-director of the Center for Oceans and Human Health (OHH) and professor of Epidemiology at the University of Miami, who directed the study, the first large epidemiologic survey of its kind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This information is especially important to take into account for children and the elderly, or if you have a compromised immune system and are planning a beach outing.â&#x20AC;?

The study found that the swimmers were 1.76 times more likely to report a gastrointestinal illness, and 4.46 times more likely to

report having a fever or respiratory illness.

Swimmers in the study also were nearly six times more likely to report a skin illness than those volunteers who stayed out of the water. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While people shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t avoid our beautiful beaches which are regularly monitored for water quality safety, we recommend taking simple precautions to reduce the risk of microbes so your visit to the beach can be more enjoyable,â&#x20AC;? said Dr. Samir Elmir, environmental administrator with the MiamiDade County Health Department.

Among the top tips from the scientists for a healthy visit to the beach this summer are: â&#x20AC;˘ Avoiding getting beach water in your mouth, or swallowing seawater; â&#x20AC;˘ Practicing good beach hygiene by not swimming when ill with flu-like symptoms, diarrhea or open wounds; â&#x20AC;˘ Showering before entering the ocean and immediately after leaving the water; â&#x20AC;˘ Washing your hands with soap before eating, and â&#x20AC;˘ Taking small children to the restroom frequently, while on a public beach.

Some tips to help you squash stings, bites

In the summer months we like to flock to the beaches and parks to enjoy the beautiful weather that give Florida the moniker â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Sunshine State.â&#x20AC;? But for some of us, spending time outdoors places a great big target of ourselves for the mosquitoes and other stinging critters that seem to be everywhere during the summer.

On top of the fact that bug bites are annoying and irritating, now we have to be mindful of possibly contracting the West Nile Virus, encephalitis and other diseases.

The Florida Department of Health advocates prevention by practicing the â&#x20AC;&#x153;5 Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.â&#x20AC;?

They are: â&#x20AC;˘ Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. â&#x20AC;˘ Dress so your skin is covered with clothing. â&#x20AC;˘ Apply mosquito repellent containing Deet to bare skin and clothing. Other effective repellents include picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535. â&#x20AC;˘ Empty containers and drain standing water around your home where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

When choosing a repellent so you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to worry about bites and stings the next time you wander outdoors, remember the following information: â&#x20AC;˘ Always read the directions carefully for the approved usage before applying. Some repellents are not suitable for children.

Recommended products contain concentrations of up to 30 percent of Deet. Traditional repellents and EPA-approved alternatives are generally available at local pharmacies. â&#x20AC;˘ Apply insect repellent to exposed skin or onto clothing, but not under clothing. â&#x20AC;˘ When protecting children from bites and stings, read label instructions to ensure that the repellent is appropriate for their age.

If you do happen to get bitten, most bites from creatures like bees, wasps and ants are not usually life-threatening unless you have an allergic reaction. These bites are common, and normal reactions to bites from these critters include pain, itching, redness and swelling confined to the sting site.

Caution must be taken with people who have an abnormal or allergic reaction to bites and stings from these insects, which can turn dangerous or even deadly. While these reactions are not common, you always should monitor for any development of the following signs and symptoms, and call 911 immediately if you notice: â&#x20AC;˘ Hives or swelling in areas other than the sting site; â&#x20AC;˘ Tightness in the chest or difficulty breathing; â&#x20AC;˘ Swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat; â&#x20AC;˘ Dizziness or sharp drop in blood pressure, or â&#x20AC;˘ Unconsciousness or cardiac arrest.

If you have had an allergic reaction in the past, you have a much greater chance of having a similar or worse reaction with each future bite, so all allergic reactions, even mild ones, should be checked out by a doctor. In some cases, a doctor will prescribe an autoinjector pen to be carried by individuals who are prone to severe allergic reactions.

We all know that bites and stings can be pesky and annoying, but protection and prevention will make that day at the park or beach a pleasant one.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complex illness with a broad range of symptoms that include emotional disturbances, the most frequent of which is anxiety. Research shows that patients with CFS and similar disorders have alterations in the intestinal microbial flora (the bacteria normally present in the body that is needed for digestion and absorption of nutrients as well as for immune response). Gut bacteria might influence mood-related symptoms and even behavior in animals and humans. Probiotics have been shown to prevent and alleviate gastrointestinal disturbances. In a study, CFS patients who received 24 billion colony forming units of the probiotic Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS) daily for two months had a significant decrease in anxiety symptoms compared to those who took a placebo. ‘Pet Fest 3’ coming on Aug. 22 to Cauley Square Historic Village

“Pet Fest 3” at Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village in south Miami-Dade County will provide some last minute quality time with the family’s pet before the rush of returning to school begins.

Honorary Inaugural Sponsors PETCO, Redland Animal Hospital and Pet Chamber of Commerce join vendors and exhibitors representing pet products and services as well as pet adoption organizations for “Pet Fest 3” on Sunday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The “Pet Parade” begins at 1 p.m. with all pets on leashes parading, starting at Cauley Square’s main entrance and ending at the entrance to the main patio where sponsors will judge the “Pet Pageant.”

Entries in the “Most Beautiful” and “Best Dressed” categories will be designated as first, second and third place finishers receiving official certificates, ribbons from Pet Chamber of Commerce, and winning owners will receive complimentary luncheon for two at the Village Chalet and Tea Room Restaurants at Cauley Square Village.

Complimentary membership to the Pet Chamber of Commerce will be awarded

additionally to the two finalists and winners in each category.

LET’S TALK CARS From a distance, the 2010 Mazda SPEED3 looks a lot like its Mazda3 siblings, with its five-point grille and sleek lines, but slide behind the steering wheel and step on the gas and immediately you will know the difference.

The Mazda SPEED3 is a performance car for enthusiasts and that’s why it has become so popular with today’s younger consumers.

It blends the five-door functionality of the Mazda3 five-door sedan with more aggressive styling and performance.

With the hot new 263 hp MZR 2.3-liter DISI Turbo engine under the hood, the new Mazda SPEED3 builds on the performance of the original, but adds a new look and even better handling. Engine output is more consistent, thanks to the hood-mounted intercooler scoop that not only improves intercooler airflow over the grille-mounted intercooler duct, but also frees grille space for a fresh-air duct to feed the engine’s intake, improving efficiency and boosting power and fuel economy.

The gear ratios in the compact three-shaft gearbox have been revised, with second through fifth gear getting slightly taller to make better use of engine torque and provide a more seamless power delivery. The advanced torque management system also has been recalibrated to better minimize torque steer by adjusting torque output based on gear position and steering angle.

As for design, the Mazda SPEED3 is distinguished from its siblings by a lower air dam and round fog lights that frame a metallic black grille. The hood houses an intercooler scoop to improve charge air cooling and the front fenders are flared to accommodate the wider tires. New 18-inch aluminum wheels are modeled on the lightweight forged wheels of the RX-8 R3, while sculpted side skirts and a lower stance intimate the vehicle’s performance capability. The rear is marked by larger dual exhaust tips, a metallic black valance and a larger roof-mounted rear wing.

The Nagare-inspired design of the exterior continues into the cabin. Black is the keynote color throughout the interior, while the seats and trim fabric have an organic red graphic design. The design is distributed throughout, with red stitching enhancing the steering wheel, seats, door trim, shift lever boot and center armrest. The dashboard gives a roomy feel to the interior and gauges display infor-
