MPO leaders: Kendall needs ‘a single voice’ BY RICHARD YAGER he need of a single voice to help win new transportation projects in Kendall was the clear message delivered by executives of Miami-Dade’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) during a Citizens Advisory Committee meeting in West Kendall on June 24. “While important that you address your district commissioners on specifics, we prioritize based on both countywide needs and public support,” said Jose Mesa, MPO executive director, following a summary of agency procedures and current projects. “No, we don’t just feed ourselves,” laughed Alvarez who often stops at Dadeland South Metrorail station to treat the homeless with extra baked goods or catered meals. Jewish congregations celebrate with a ‘Kosher Kitchen Shower’

As part of the process of “koshering” the kitchen at Congregation Bet Breira, Rabbi Jaime Aklepi (left) and Rabbi David Schonblum use boiling water and a blowtorch to cleanse food preparations surfaces. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY LEE STEPHENS Congregation Bet Breira and Temple Samu-El Or Olom recently hosted a “Kosher Kitchen Shower” to celebrate the creation of a kosher kitchen at Bet Breira, future home of both congregations which will come together as one later this summer. Members of both congregations joined Rabbi Jaime Aklepi and Rabbi David Schonblum to learn about the laws for keeping kosher, followed by a ritual cleaning, blessing and final “koshering” of the kitchen. Guests enjoyed a festive reception

with a garden tea party theme, and came laden with gifts to help furnish the new kitchen. A gift registry for Congregation Bet Breira and Temple Samu-El Or Olom is available at < w w w. MPO, from page 1 ––––––– to relieve overcrowded roadways, Wilson Fernandez, MPO systems manager, responded, “I’ve attended many presentation meetings in Kendall during recent years, and I have to tell you that Kendall doesn’t speak with a single voice. What we hear is ‘we want this’ from some and ‘we don’t want this’ from others. “To get what you want means speaking with a single, unified voice,” he stressed. Fernandez identified Kendall and Miami Beach as two county areas where residents most often present conflicting views about corridor transportation alternatives when reviewed during local presentations that solicit public feedback. MPO’s current five-year update of its 20-year transportation projections now focuses on BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) as a primary answer for planning relief of traffic congestion, rather than rail use of either FEC or CSX rail line rights-of-way, Mesa said. “Rail has just become far too expensive even for long-range planning and has rapidly diminished in favor of less costly solutions like BRT.” Kendall will get the first countywide BRT signalized control system in which bus drivers on existing traffic lanes

GOLF, from page 1 ––––––––– sion proposal by the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department would have eliminated the disc golf course in the southeast corner of the park to accommodate a new aquatic facility, a project passionately endorsed by families with autistic relatives who benefit from swim therapy. “We want to keep the disc golf course intact, but the aquatic center is equally important for autistic exercising and workouts, so, rather than compete for space, we’ve joined with the society to ask that both needs be accommodated in any new plans,” Alvarez said. The project, under revision for an initial Community Council 12 review on July 15, will offer a compromise, possibly by acquiring adjacent unused land. A 10-year resident who grew up in the New Jersey-New York area, the disc golfing chef began learning cooking skills from an Ecuadorian grandmother who taught Latin-styled cuisine to grandson George who stood “by her at the stove at the age of 4. “Actually, I began cooking as an underaged employee when I was 14,” Alvarez continued. “We had then moved to North Carolina where I learned sandwich preparation for the Charlotte Country Club snack bar, serving high-end politicians

speed service times using electronic equipment synchronized with traffic signals at key intersections to delay red and green lights, Fernandez disclosed. “We’ve already tested the system at SW 87th Avenue and Kendall Drive where a new satellite-based system proved shorter times by several seconds which multiplied over several intersections can significantly reduce commuting time.” Other MPO items discussed. • Sunpass tolling and use of rubbertired, rail-like bus vehicles on managed bus lanes are seen as the most feasible alternatives to reduce overcrowded Kendall roads. • New Metrorail projects are not visualized in 20-year MPO traffic improvement projections unless Congress provides a special legislative funding package. • Light rail service between Miami International Airport and Metrozoo through East Kendall has been discarded in MPO planning. • An FDOT proposal blocking a southbound entrance at SW 152nd Street that would have Kendall drivers going north to head south on Florida’s Turnpike will get MPO review. • South Dade’s Busway will be recommended for tolling by private vehicles to utilize excess capacity and bypass areas of severe traffic congestion along S. Dixie Highway (US1). and the affluent.” He next took hands-on lessons from both French and German chefs who cooked for crowds of up to 2,000 at a famed Charlotte speedway venue, in part while attending college at UNC-Charlotte. Later returning to Miami “because I was born here and always loved Florida,” Alvarez polished culinary skills now create menus for “George’s Southern Style Catering” featuring empanada recipes not seen on local menus, such as skirt steak with saute onions and mushrooms, chef’s potato with green beans and salmon with white lemon caper sauce over angel hair pasta. Alvarez, 41, a 10-year international sales specialist, and wife, Franny, cook at their Pinecrest apartment, improvising a variety of fillings for empanadas that have become a Miami staple akin to hamburgers and pizza, and often are available weekends at a Cauley Square booth. “Our secret lies in preparing the dough and out-of-the-ordinary fillings,” Alvarez said, adding that his basic $3 empanada “is bigger by one-to-two inches and less dry due to meatier fillings.” George’s Catering uniquely offers veggiestyled or diet empanadas as well as cookedto-order meal service (the diner chooses the menu) and light to full-course wedding, banquet and private party spreads. ‘Connectivity’ is the operative word Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR

AROUND TOWN Virglilio Alvarez who manages an engineering firm in the commercial area off SW 136th Street calls attention to a northbound ‘blockade’ created by the CSX freight line where SW 127th Avenue now ends, a few blocks south of SW 128th Avenue. That’s where the soon-to-be-completed 127th Avenue four-laning along Arvida Middle School will create easier “connectivity” for those headed north of the tracks, south of SW 104th Street, to both Kendall Drive and Bird Road, he points out. However, Mr. Alvarez points out that “Those who live south of these tracks are trapped...and have no other choice but to go to SW 117th or SW 137 Avenues” (or, must drive south to go north). Sounds like FDOT’s plan to close a Turnpike southbound ramp at SW 152nd Street, causing Kendall drivers in that vicinity to head north to go south! Land-taking cost along SW 127th on the FP&L right-of-way where power lines extend for over a mile would be nearastronomical, advises Raul Pino who directs the county’s DPW Land Development Division. Of course, it would also create a new grade crossing, barring an unsightly bridging project. Nevertheless, maybe the powers-to-be ramming through the Turkey Point expansion project might soften public opinion and create a win-win situation by offering to alleviate costs while improving “their” community, too (as they so often tell us). Anyone listening at FPL headquarters? Estimated tolls for your own ‘bus’ on South Dade’s Busway (once converted to Sunpass-styled use) range from $11.25 to $12.75 from one end to the other, which

seems a heck of a price to get to Homestead. While MPO people seem are pushing for the project, East Kendall actives are gearing up a protest at a July 23 hearing when planning folks seek a goahead for a new tollway, or “enhancing” the existing transit, whatever that means! Kendall Skyscraping? Westchester’s Community Council okayed a new sixstory storage facility at the corner of Bird and SW 87th Avenue in mid-June. Councilman Jose Garrido, pressing for sidewalk appeal, got his wish for lighting the windows at night plus a large clock on the building’s facade, much like the timepiece that helped win CC 12 approval for a new office building being completed on the east side of SW 87th, just north of Sunset. And yes, six stories is about as high as we like to go in these parts! West Kendall’s busy-as-ever Martha Backer on a mission to collect material evidence of Jewish life in Southwest Miami (photographs, documents and artifacts of your family, businesses and organizations) to be delivered to her or the Jewish Museum of Florida. Gerrymandering: 200-year-old legislative manipulation R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The U.S. Constitution requires the state legislatures redraw congressional district boundaries every 10 years. The Constitution also requires a census be undertaken every 10 years specifically for the purpose of adjusting the number of congressional districts to which each state is entitled. Seizing upon this constitutional mandate, political parties in power redesign the boundaries of the state’s congressional districts to insure the reelection of the member of their parties. Republicans, when in power, do so to protect their party members, as do Democrats when they are in power. A little less than 200 years ago Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry signed a bill that created a district shaped like a salamander. In some locations the district was only two city blocks wide, but it did bring together sufficient members of

the governor’s party to guarantee that they retained their elective positions. Thus the phrase “gerrymander,” was named after Governor Gerry. The United States Supreme Court, in 1986, ruled that partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional when the electoral system is arranged in a manner that will consistently degrade a voter’s influence on the political process. The Voting Rights Act of 1965, notwithstanding the 1986 ruling by the Supreme Court, encouraged the creation of predominantly minority districts to encourage the election of minority members to political office. Jump forward to 2009. A proposed Florida constitutional amendment is circulating the state for signatures that will mandate that congressional districts may not be drawn with the intent to favor a party or incumbent. It requires that districts must maintain the equal opportunity of minority communities to elect representatives of their choice and to participate fully in the political process. It further states that districts must be contiguous and to the extent possible compact and adhere to existing local boundaries. This addresses districts cur-

––– VIEWPOINT ––– rently wandering across the state to bring together far separated communities to favor a political party. The proposed constitutional amendment would guarantee that the act of redrawing districts would be transparent and open to public view. If citizens felt that legislators still were attempting to gerrymander districts in their favor, voters could challenge their actions in court. And, the courts would have full authority to amend the proposed new boundaries. Previous challenges to gerrymandering tactics were lost in the Florida Supreme Court where the justices ruled, properly, that community boundaries were not constitutionally required. The proposed amendment to our state constitution would add that requirement. How do we as citizens get involved? Join the efforts of members of our community, led by Miami attorney Ellen Frieden, a Democrat, and Tallahassee attorney Thom

Rumberger, a Republican, in obtaining signatures to make sure the proposed constitutional amendment gets on the ballot. Go to <www.FairDistrictsFlorida.org> and sign up to assist in the petition signature outreach and/or make a financial contribution. Their mailing address is: 2665 South Bayshore Dr., Suite M103, Miami, FL 33133. When all is said and done, remember the immortal words of Mark Twain who said: “No man’s life, liberty or property is safe while Congress is in session.” If he were alive today, I am sure he would have included state legislatures.

Is Florida’s economic recovery still another two years away?

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Could the end of the recession be in sight? Residential construction nationwide unexpectedly climbed 17.2 percent last month, its highest level since last fall. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, new multi-family housing is up 62 percent, and single-family homes are up 7.5 percent. Here in Florida however, the stillstalled housing markets are now being blamed for possibly delaying recovery for another two years. Florida went into a recession about six months before everyone else, which is why our recovery may take even longer according to the latest economic forecast from banking giant Wachovia. Researchers found Miami-Dade recently lost about 41,000 jobs, although foreign trade and commerce remain strong points for the local economy. Construction and housing continue to be Miami’s long-term problems. The Wachovia Forecast concludes, “A considerable period of time will be needed to bring Miami’s housing market back into balance,” a Coral Gables financial planner told me. “It certainly looks like housing is pulling down so many other areas, like employment and consumer spending; it all has to be worked out.” The study finds Fort Lauderdale’s job losses to be a little better, but the city still has some major weaknesses after recently losing about 35,000 positions. While Broward’s recovery is still “a ways off,” it finds the worst of the recession to likely have passed. Wachovia economists say statewide unemployment will worsen 11 percent due to our housing and real estate markets that are still being described as considerably worse than the rest of country. For this reason, Wachovia now believes we may not see a turnaround until

much later than the rest of the country — possibly as late as 2011. Remember, however, that economic forecast predictions are similar to those of severe storm paths. Sometimes forecasters get them right, and sometimes they don’t. NOT ENOUGH REAL SOLUTIONS Ernesto Rivero, who retired about five years ago, recently decided he needed to go back to work. However, he soon found his job interviews weren’t going the way he expected. He remarked on employers’ faces when they would note his date of birth, reflecting the fact that he is 70 years of age. Rivero is not alone. With retirement savings wiped out and the recession turning into the deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression, more and more seniors are being forced back into the job market. Victoria Villalba, a professional job counselor, warns: “Analysts and research tell us that by the year 2015, it is estimated that 20 percent of those working will be over the age of 55.” Job experts say it’s not surprising that so many senior citizens are now looking to jump back into the workforce. Rivero has gotten some work through an AARP program. But even with his part time work and social security checks, he complains that it’s just not enough. Villalba advises senior citizens to visit <www.retirementjobs.com>. She also recommends applying to staffing companies that offer temporary work in consulting, as seniors typically enjoy flexibility. While our national employment problem is expected to worsen, economic forecasters don’t expect it to delay the start of our economic recovery. Still, with still so many questions on the streets of South Florida and too few answers out of Washington, it’s difficult to have a clear idea of what’s ahead.

Halton Fuller, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, has made Optimist Football at Suniland a priority for 2009. Fuller has three children involved in Optimist cheering and football — Isaiah, 6; Kiara, 7, and Desiree, 9. He wants his children and other kids to have the best possibility to achieve their dreams. “I started out at Suniland as a volunteer in 2001 and I got my kids involved in the program,” Fuller said. His son is on the 70-pound team and his daughters cheer. “The Optimist Club pretty much oversees as the sports program from a financial standpoint. They handle most of the administrative matters,” he said. Those matters include insurance and buying the equipment and uniforms needed for sports and cheerleading. As chair, Fuller oversees the cheerleading and football programs. “I’m responsible for ordering of the equipment and uniforms and the collection of registration fees,” he said. The football program operates under the Greater Miami Pop Warner League and plays other Pop Warner teams in the county. Fuller expects Suniland football and cheering to draw 240 to 260 youngsters this year from ages 3 to 14. While some might think 3 is a little young to play football, Fuller says the 3-year-olds are awesome. “Some 3-year-olds, believe it or not, play better than the 5-year-olds,” he said. “I have 3-year-olds that are probably bigger than my son. We don’t let them do contact. It’s just to familiarize them with the game.” Fuller appoints volunteer head coaches for each team. Each of the head coaches is responsible for bringing on the assistant coaches, up to six per team, so he needs on average, 48

coaches for just football. The coaches are all screened and background checks are done before they are given a badge. Fuller keeps tabs on how the coaches are doing. He wants coaches who can teach the game and be good losers as well as good winners. If the coach is an abusive screamer, Fuller talks to them and takes disciplinary action if needed. One of the pluses of being in a Pop Warner league, is that it’s the only football and cheer league that requires scholar athletes, Fuller said. “They must turn in a report card in order to play,” he said. “If the kids aren’t making the grade, we put them on a probation period and we have weekly progress reports.” Suniland also reaches out to Palmetto High and Coral Reef High for teen volunteers to help coach cheerleading. “Any girl that would like to come out and coach should give me a call,” he said. “I’m also looking for a cheerleading commissioner. If anyone in the local area would like to come out and interview, I would love to give them the spot.” Fuller said they went through a phase where cheering did not receive enough attention and now he’s working on revitalizing the program. “Hopefully we can get volunteers to come out,” he said. Registration already has started. Football begins Aug. 1 and, until then, registration is $125 for football players and $100 for cheerleaders. “Normally we offer a discounted rate but last year we did not get a lot of equipment returned so we were not able to offer the discounted amount,” he said. “We’re looking to going back to the discounted fee, hopefully, next year.” For more information and registration forms, go to online to <www.sunilandsundevils.com>.

BY BETH COHEN The Family Resource Center of South Florida hosted its 13th Annual Lawyers Strike Against Child Abuse Bowling Tournament on June 13 at Bird Bowl in Kendall. Lawyers and other professionals came dressed to impress in their team shirts while showing off their bowling skills to raise funds to help prevent and treat child abuse and neglect through the strengthening of families. The tournament raised more than $30,000 for the organization, and more than 250 participated. Adorno & Yoss LLP took home first and second place trophies, and City National Bank was awarded a third place trophy. The bowling pin trophies were painted by renowned artist and Family Resource Center board member Ed King. During the “Rock & Bowl” style tournament, attendees enjoyed lunch and music provided by Bird Bowl. More than 70 items were donated for the event’s silent auction and raffle, which included restaurant and salon certificates, cameras and sports memorabilia. “This year’s bowling tournament was such as great success,” said Sharon Liebman, Family Resource Center’s chair of the event’s planning committee and attorney with AT&T. “The Family Resource Center is extremely grateful to the law firms and other businesses that came out to raise funds and awareness

about child abuse and neglect.” Event sponsors included Carnival Cruise Lines, Dade County Bar Association/Young Lawyers Section, City National Bank of Florida, BNY Mellon Wealth Management and DKM Skincare. “This is the Family Resource Center’s largest and most anticipated event of the year,” said Family Resource Center executive director Oren Wunderman. “We are so grateful to our sponsors, staff, board members, volunteers and donors for their hard work and dedication to the Family Resource Center.” All proceeds for the event are dedicated towards providing gap funding to support the operational costs of the Family Resource Center. These funds maintain the organization’s programs, which serve more than 4,000 adults and children each year. The Family Resource Center is driven by the principle that nothing is more fundamental to a community than the safety and well being of its children. Its goal is to prevent and change dysfunctional parent/ child interaction patterns, promote positive self-concepts, and build healthy relationships to prevent child abuse and neglect through family support, crisis intervention, housing location, family preservation, parent education and counseling. For more information about the Family Resource Center contact AnneMarie Tristan at 305-960-5543 or send email to <atristan@frcflorida.org>.

BY CRISTINA CRUZ Mario Concha Jr. has accepted the position of head coach of Christopher Columbus High School’s varsity soccer team. Mario comes to Columbus with a great asset; his father Mario Concha Sr. will serve as his assistant coach. Mario Sr. was a professional soccer player for 15 years, playing for several international teams representing Argentina, Bolivia and the United States. Mario Jr. previously worked at Columbus as the varsity assistant coach under Luchie Gonzalez, also a former professional player. Together they led the Columbus Explorers to the regional finals this past year. Mario Jr. began his soccer career at age 14 playing in various competitive Miami clubs such as West Kendall, Strike Force and Light House. He played for Miami Killian High School and St. Thomas University. While at St. Thomas he gained national ranking (No. 4) and trained with the Bolivian Under 20 Youth National Team. After college, he played with the Miami Breakers USISL and trained with two of Bolivia’s First Division Popular Club teams (Strongest FC and Aurora FC). Among Mario Jr.’s accomplishments is leading Varela High School’s varsity soccer team to win the state and national championships in 2007. He also recently coached the Pinecrest Premier U10 Girls Travel Team to win the Dade Regional Jamboree Championships and the Soccer Paradise FC Aventura Team to win the U17 FYSA Dade League Finals. Among Mario Sr.’s accomplishments is winning the National Bolivian Soccer League Championships while with the Strongest Soccer Club in 1978 and com-

ing in third in the American Soccer League while playing for the New York United Soccer Club from 1980 to 1982. He also coached the West Kendall Optimist/Rey Pizza Club to be the Miami Classic Champions, the Plantation Tournament Champions and fourth place in the Copa Latina. The 2009-10 Columbus varsity soccer team will return 15 players from a very strong season last year. Because Mario Jr. was the assistant varsity soccer coach and the JV head soccer coach at Columbus last year, he knows all the players and he really relates to them, having played high school and college soccer locally. “I’m very excited to be a part of Columbus and look forward to building the team to be a soccer powerhouse in Dade County,” Mario Jr. said. “I’m also excited about working with my father; we really complement each other and this will benefit the program.”

Fairchild’s Mango Brunch is a tasty tribute to the most delicious of tropical fruits — the mango. This year’s Mango Brunch on Sunday, July 12, 11 a.m., is bringing together two of the original members of the Mango Gang — Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s and Mark Militello of the Regent Bal Harbour. Noted chefs Roly Cruz-Taura of The Biltmore and Giancarla Bodoni of Escopazzo also will be creating original and amazing mango dishes. But it doesn’t end there — look for some sweet mango excitement from the Four Seasons executive pastry chef Charles Froke, a CIA graduate whose artistic desserts are the talk of the town. Whole Foods, this year’s sponsor for Fairchild’s International Mango Festival, and a crew of its chefs will be preparing mouth-watering mango waffles with mango butter for the brunch. This brunch sells out every year, so

make your reservations soon by calling Tricia Frank at 305-663-8091 or by going to Fairchild’s website at <www.fairchildgarden.org>. Tickets are $75 for members, $100 for nonmembers. Synergy HomeCare opens its first location in Florida BY COURTNEY THOMAS

Lucia Salazar de Robelo’s family history may read like a screenplay but it’s far from it; it’s 100 percent real and it has shaped her into the person she is today. Salazar de Robelo is taking the next step in an already impressive career path by opening Synergy HomeCare, 6855 SW 81 St. in South Miami, the first of 25 Florida offices the company plans to open during the next three years. Salazar de Robelo grew up in Nicaragua but after the revolution in 1979, her father — a coffee grower who organized other farmers against the Sandinistas — sent her, her mother and three siblings to the U.S. for protection. Their temporary relocation quickly turned permanent as Lucia’s father was killed within months and the Sandinistas expropriated the family’s farm, money and even the children’s toys and dog, forcing the family to band together in the U.S. to make ends meet. Lucia met and married a fellow Nicaraguan, Jorge Robelo, and although the pair built a comfortable life in the U.S. — Jorge worked his way up from a sales position at a local Home Depot in Miami to become the chain’s senior IT coordinator for the Southeast at its corporate headquarters in Atlanta — they felt a responsibility to return to their home country. When they returned to Nicaragua in 1994, the Robelos were met with economic depression but invested their resources to bring about change and hope. They started a mail-order company, which grew to more than 150 employees, launched the third Internet provider in the country and opened a furniture store before Lucia was recruited to establish ProNicaragua, an organization promoting foreign investment in Nicaragua. Her work with ProNicaragua, bringing $230 million into the country, impressed many including President Enrique Bolanos who asked her to become the country’s Minister of Tourism. Salazar de Robelo held this position for two years but when the government and political landscape shifted, Lucia was recruited by U.S.-based Muro Group, a private sector healthcare

management company, as its vice president of legal compliance. In early 2009, the Robelos decided the time was right to move back to the U.S. to pursue a new venture and help a new group of individuals with Synergy HomeCare. “Having worked in so many different fields over the years, we wanted to continue our commitment to helping others while controlling our own destinies, and found Synergy to be the perfect combination,” said Lucia, 42. “South Florida continues to be an attractive destination for people of many ages and backgrounds and the need for this type of service is only going to increase as time goes on. Jorge and I are looking forward to being a part of this growing industry and creating lasting relationships with our clients.” Founded in 2002 by Peter Tourian, Gilbert, AZ-based Synergy HomeCare provides high-quality, non-medical homecare to people in their homes. Potential clients can call any time of the day or night to request a caregiver and Synergy HomeCare responds. Unlike other homecare providers, Synergy HomeCare does not limit its services to seniors and provides highquality, non-medical care to people of all ages in the comfort of their own homes. Caregivers are available on an hourly, daily, weekly or 24/7 basis, 365 days per year to seniors, the convalescing, adults injured on the job, those recovering from injuries, the disabled and anyone who needs help with daily activities. Although their existing coverage area — which includes Miami-Dade and Monroe counties — is quite large, the Robelos hope to expand their territory farther within the next year while still providing all clients with the individual attention for which Synergy is known. “It’s difficult for many people to find the time to balance their own personal needs and the needs of someone else; what Synergy offers is unparalleled care exactly when it’s needed most,” Salazar de Robelo said. “It’s our goal to make Synergy the provider that comes to mind when care is needed. Our standards are extremely high and we’ll do whatever it takes to match every client with a caregiver that will not only meet but exceed their needs.”

Kendall Animal Clinic vets find joy in caring for pets BY LEE STEPHENS Being veterinarians is a joy for the doctors at the Kendall Animal Clinic. Dr. Richard Rogoff has been practicing veterinary medicine in Miami since 1970 and has been in the Kendall area almost from the start. He began his Kendall practice in the Kendall Mall at the Kendall Animal Hospital and then moved across the street to the Kendall Animal Clinic, 10521 N. Kendall Dr., Suite E-101, after Hurricane Andrew severely damaged the shopping center in 1992. Prior to the arrival of Hurricane Andrew, Dr. Deborah Colker worked with Dr. Rogoff at the Kendall Animal Hospital. “We both love what we do,” Dr. Colker said. When they moved across the street, the two became partners in the new clinic. “We’re both small-animal practitioners,” Dr. Rogoff said. “I have a special interest in dermatology and Dr. Colker has a special interest in feline medication and surgery.” Dr. Rogoff is a member of the

American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and the South Florida Veterinary Medical Association, while Dr. Colker is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners. She also was the 1995 president of the South Florida Veterinary Medical Association and an executive board member of the Dade County Veterinary Foundation. They have more than 50 years of combined experience in veterinary medicine. Their specialties bring them some unusual cases that might have gone to one or two other vets before finding their way to them. Most people find their practice through word of mouth, referrals and the Internet. Preventative medicine plays a key role

in veterinary medicine. A specific diagnosis, early in the game, is the key to a long healthy life. Cats are living well into their 20s, and dogs, depending on their size, have greater longevity than ever before. Over the years, Dr. Rogoff’s interest in dermatology and Dr. Colker’s interest in felines have rubbed off on each other, resulting in both becoming skilled in either specialty. “It’s like a marriage,” Dr. Rogoff said. “We have been together for years. We discuss everything.” The clinic is a full-service facility and offers such services as vaccinations, specialty treatment, spaying and neutering, and other surgical needs as well as boarding. There is state-of-the-art equipment that enables the doctors to diagnose their patients quickly and accurately. People with pets do have healthier lives, and there are studies that demonstrate their therapeutic effects (i.e., reducing blood pressure and depression). Dogs and cats welcome you at the door, make you feel like your house is a home, forgive and forget all that you do, and look joyfully to each new day. No one understands this better than Doctors Rogoff and Colker. “We have a strong degree of commitment and passion for what we do,” Dr. Rogoff said. “The way our schedule is structured, we never burn out. I just adore what I do for a livelihood. I hope I never retire.” Doctors Rogoff and Colker are very proud of their facility, which does not look or smell like a typical vet’s office. It is immaculate and has a Southwestern motif. It is arranged in such a way that suits their needs perfectly. For more information, call 305-2746434 or visit online at <www.kendallanimalclinic.com>.

a single treatment,

A fun and free educational day awaits children of all ages at The Falls and Dadeland Mall as the Simon Kidgits Club and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) host a “Safe Summer” event on Saturday, July 11, from noon to 2 p.m. at The Falls in the lobby of Regal Cinemas and from 3 to 5 p.m. at Dadeland Mall in Center Court. Free fun for the whole family, the “Safe Summer” event will help parents teach their kids to play it safe by featuring safety demonstrations, providing free DNA kits and allowing kids the opportunity to interact with the MiamiDade Police Department Operations Center. “‘Safe Summer’ is dedicated to building a safer community through communication, awareness and commitment to action,” said Susie Battistini, director of mall marketing and business development of Dadeland Mall. In addition, youngsters can have their photos taken with McGruff the Crime Dog, meet and greet a real K-9trained dog and enjoy many other activities. All Kidgits Kids Club members will receive a free gift for attending. The NCPC will be teaching kids about tips for neighborhood safety, summer safety and stranger awareness, including: • Stay out of the street. Cars make the street a dangerous place to play. • Tell your parents where you are going and when you’ll be back. Know your home phone number and address.

Free fun for the whole family, the “Safe Summer” event will help parents teach their kids to play it safe by featuring safety demonstrations, providing free DNA kits and allowing kids the opportunity to interact with the MiamiDade Police Department Operations Center. • Ask your parents first. If someone invites you to go somewhere, offers you a gift or just wants to talk, say you need to ask your parents for permission first. “This is the perfect chance for families to spend some quality time together in a free and comfortable environment as they learn important safety tips,” said Dailen Rodriguez, director of mall marketing for The Falls. The Falls is located at S. Dixie Highway (US1) and 136th Street. For more information about The Falls, go online to <www.simon.com>. Dadeland Mall is located at 7535 N. Kendall Dr. (between the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and S. Dixie Highway (US1). For more information about Dadeland Mall call 305-665-6226 or visit online at <www.simon.com>.

UMH names CNO Zambrana as chief operating officer BY STEPHEN CABEZA David Zambrana, chief nursing officer at University of Miami Hospital (UMH), has been promoted to assume the role of both chief nursing and chief operating officer for the 560-bed hospital. “David’s 18 years of experience in a broad range of nursing specialties and hospital management is a perfect fit for this new role at our hospital,” said Anthony Degina Jr., CEO at UMH. “Nursing services are at the core of what UMH provides to patients. “At the same time, operational issues impact those nursing departments and having David providing leadership for both sides of the equation will improve communication and teamwork between these critical hospital functions,” Degina said. “Nursing is my first passion, but I’m very excited about expanding my role to include the operations side and bring a more cohesive and comprehensive approach to the daily activities at

boyfriend bought a 27-foot sailboat and cruised to the Bahamas. Upon their return to Vero Beach, she launched her own local ad agency and ran it until starting a family two years ago. Though they barely knew each other at the time, the four women teamed up in August 2006 to create the first GROUP out of a mutual interest in doing something extraordinary with their lives. What followed surpassed even their own expectations. Ideal for these turbulent times, The GROUP’s unique meeting structure was designed to harness the collective energy and wisdom of its participants to help individual members turn dreams and goals into reality, face daunting challenges, and cope with crises, such as a recent job layoff, among other personal benefits. Each once-a-month, two-hour meeting is configured around five timed segments — called Opening, Gratitude, Successes, Honoring & Action Steps, and Closing. Members are given designated roles — the Guide, the Timer, the Honored One, and the Action Step Writer — which rotate with each new session. At the heart of each gathering is a full hour in which all attention is focused on that month’s Honored One, who is able to explore anything she likes, from the seemingly insignificant to something of vast importance.

New Olive Garden features Tuscan farmhouse design BY KATIE LENNON Olive Garden was scheduled to open its newest Tuscan Farmhouse design restaurant on Monday, June 29, 4 p.m., in Homestead Pavilion, 2575 NE Eighth St. in Homestead. This is the first Tuscan Farmhouse design Olive Garden to open in Miami-Dade County. About 160 jobs have been created with the opening of the 246-seat, 7,534square-foot restaurant that is expected to contribute to the state’s restaurant industry growth. According to the National Restaurant Association’s 2009 Industry Forecast, restaurant sales in Florida are expected to grow 1.8 percent this year. “Homestead’s reputation as a familyoriented community makes it the ideal location for the newest member of Olive Garden’s family of local restaurants,” said Valerie Insignares, executive vice president of operations for Olive Garden. The inspiration for the Tuscan Farmhouse design is Olive Garden’s

Riserva di Fizzano restaurant in Tuscany, Italy. Olive Garden design teams traveled to Italy regularly to work with Italian architects Fabio and Lucia Zingarelli to create a restaurant that authentically recreated the warmth and simple beauty of a farmhouse in Tuscany. The Homestead Olive Garden has a rustic stone exterior, typical of the buildings in the Italian countryside, and an interior accented by Italian imports designed to make the dining experience here a tribute to the restaurant’s Italian inspiration. Ceilings supported by exposed wood beams, stone and wood accents throughout, and

terra cotta tile highlight the interior. The bar top is crafted from lava stone, then hand-painted by artisans in Italy with a design created exclusively for Olive Garden. Vibrant imported fabrics decorate windows and dining seats, hand-painted plates designed by Lucia Zingarelli adorn rustic stone and stucco walls, and the lighting fixtures are all distinctly Italian. “At the Homestead Olive Garden, there is an atmosphere of Italian hospitality,” said Jimmy Lipps, general manager. “We delight our guests with a genuine Italian dining experience through fresh, flavorful food, paired with a great glass of wine.” To recognize Lipps’ role as head of the Olive Garden family in Homestead and to emphasize the importance the company places on its general managers, Olive Garden honored Lipps by setting his name in stone. Travertine marble imported from Tuscany was chiseled with Lipps’ name and placed prominently by the front door. Olive Garden is the leading restaurant in the Italian dining segment with 679 restaurants, more than 80,000 employees and $3.1 billion in annual sales. Olive Garden is a division of Darden Restaurants Inc., the world’s largest full-service owned and operated restaurant company. Through July 5 the restaurant will serve dinner only Sunday through Thursday, 4 – 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 4-11 p.m. The restaurant will be open for lunch beginning Monday, July 6. Lunch will be served starting at 11 a.m. every day. For more information, visit Olive Garden’s website at <www.olivegarden.com>.

We are fortunate enough to live in a city that enjoys a warm climate year round, but summer days can become insufferable. Fortunately, the body has its own built-in way to keep cool. Heat escapes the body by perspiration through the skin. If the body does not cool properly or enough, a heat-related illness can occur, and it can become serious or even deadly if not treated quickly. Those most at risk are the elderly and children under the age of 5. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue wants everyone to enjoy a safe summer by remembering the following tips: • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool fluids throughout the day, but avoid those that contain caffeine, alcohol or high sugar content since they actually contribute to dehydration and make a heat-related illness worse. • Keep cool. Stay indoors in an air-

conditioned place and limit your outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours, avoiding the mid-day sun. • Dress for success. Dress for the heat by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun’s energy. Wearing a hat or using an umbrella also can help. • Don’t sweat it. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Also try to exercise in the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning. • Eat right. Eat small meals more often and avoid foods high in protein that increase metabolic heat. • Pamper your pets. Don’t forget your animals. Keep them in an air-conditioned area if possible and provide plenty of fresh water. • Can the Car. Never leave anyone alone in a closed, parked vehicle. It takes only 10 minutes for the temperature to rise 19 degrees in a hot car. In 20 minutes, it rises 29 degrees.

On average, heat waves kill more people in the U.S. than all other natural disasters combined. Heat-related illnesses usually progress in stages, so if you catch it at an early stage, you should be able to prevent the development of a life-threatening situation. Victims of heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place and given cool water to drink. Ice packs or cool damp cloths should be applied to the skin. If

the person refuses water, vomits or loses consciousness, call 9-1-1 immediately. Remember that in order to stay safe and healthy throughout the South Florida summer, you should beat the heat by staying hydrated and trying to plan outdoor activities during early morning or late afternoon hours.

Cristina Armand is a public information officer for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Mini Cooper is fun to drive, sporty and practical Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Want a small car that’s sporty and practical, fun to drive and gets excellent fuel economy (28/37 mpg)? Check out the latest version of the Mini Cooper, now available as a convertible. The latest hardtop edition of the Mini Cooper made its debut in the 2007 model year, although earlier generations have been around since 2000 (the original Mini debuted in the late 1950s). The two versions are similar, but there are subtle differences. For example, the headlights of the latest models are rounder and the hood is flatter, while the grille is more prominent and the turn signals have been integrated into the headlight clusters. To the rear, the taillights are wider and there’s a wider trim strip on the hatch. For 2009, the Mini Cooper is offered as a two-door hatchback hardtop, a four-

seat convertible and something with a longer wheelbase that resembles a small station wagon dubbed the Clubman. The hardtop was redesigned for the 2007 model year, while the convertible debuts as a 2009 model. Two trim levels are available, the standard Cooper and the highperformance Cooper S. Fog lights, a black grille insert, hood scoop, rear bumper inserts and rear spoiler wing distinguish the Cooper S from the Cooper. Both standard models are powered by a normally aspirated 1.6-liter, 118 hp four-cylinder engine, while the Mini Cooper S models come with a turbocharged 172-hp version of the same engine and clock 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. An oversize round speedometer sits in the center of the dash and dominates the interior. A tachometer is mounted on the tilt/telescoping steering column and it moves when the column is adjusted. Standard models come with leatherette upholstery, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, heightadjustable front passenger seat, splitfolding rear seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3

Subtle differences mark the latest Mini Cooper, including rounder headlights, a flatter hood and a more

six-speaker stereo and remote keyless entry. The hardtop ($18,550) also has a rear wiper and defogger and P175/65R15 all-season tires on alloy wheels, while the convertible ($23,900) comes with P195/55R16 run-flat tires on alloy wheels. The Mini Cooper S hardtop ($21,950) and convertible ($26,800) come with a stiffer suspension, performance exhaust system, 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch wheels are an option) with 195/55R16 all-season run-flat tires; fog lights, a black grille insert, hood scoop, rear bumper inserts and rear spoiler. The John Cooper Works (JCW) hard-

top ($28,550) and convertible add a more powerful 208 hp version of the turbocharged engine, as well as larger brakes, firmer suspension and P205/45R17 run-flat tires. All models come standard with a sixspeed manual transmission, while a sixspeed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift controls is optional ($1,250) for all but the JCW models.
