Biscayne Bay Dade Heritage Days to mark restoration of ‘Old Miami High’ VOL. 27, NO. 8

BY BECKY ROPER MATKOV o kick off Dade Heritage Days 2009, the public is invited to step back into 1905 when a growing young City of Miami opened its first public high school building. Thanks to a six-year effort led by the nonprofit Dade Heritage Trust, the original “Old Miami High” has been relocated and restored in Southside Park at 198 SW 11 St. A grand opening — complete with music, costumed students, refreshments and civic pride — will take place on Tuesday, Mar. 3, 10:30 a.m. to noon, to celebrate Old Miami High’s new use as a city parks office and historic classroom. The wood frame building, with its high ceilings, big windows and inviting front porch was originally built in Downtown Miami behind the Miami Grammar School. Its first graduating class in 1906 had four students. The structure served as Miami High from 1905 to 1911, then was moved south of the Miami River to serve as the first Southside Elementary School from 1911 to 1914. By 2002 the vintage building had become a boarding house and was slated for demolition for a condo development. At the suggestion of local historian Arva Moore Parks, Dade Heritage

he Key Biscayne Art Festival returns for its 45th anniversary on Mar. 21-22. Admission is free to the public. This two-day event brings together an eclectic mix of 150 of the nation’s most talented artists who will collectively display more than $15 million in artwork. The artists were juried by an independent panel of expert judges, and hand-selected from hundreds of applicants based on quality and diversity. All of their artwork is original and handmade in America. One of the featured artists at the Key Biscayne Art Festival will be Teresa Hansen of Loveland, CO. A veteran of Howard Alan Events’ west coast shows, Hansen is now bringing her artwork to Howard Alan Events’ festivals in Florida, including Key Biscayne. Hansen’s childhood in Wisconsin inspired her to become a full-time artist. She continues to be inspired by children, animals and nature in her work. Hansen has studied under all kinds of artists, learning drawing, painting and sculpting. Her current media are: bronze (three dimensional and relief), pewter, pencil, papercast, watercolor and oil. Pieces range from halfinch squirrels to 32-foot monuments.
