T

he Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC), proudly managed by Global Spectrum, once a frequent destination for prowrestling events, was one of several South Florida venues selected to host an ancillary event for Wrestlemania XXVIII. WWE brought pro wrestling back to Miami Beach on the grandest of scales. The MBCC welcomed WWE’s most loyal fans in hosting Wrestlemania Fan Axxess from March 29th through April 1st. When it was announced that WrestleMania would be coming to Miami, many likened it economically to an event that South Florida is intimately familiar with, the hosting of a Super Bowl.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) did not fail to disappoint, putting together an impressive and diverse week-long schedule of events including everything from fashion, art and golf to unrestricted access to pro wrestling’s biggest stars. Diehard pro-wrestling fans flocked to Miami from all over the world to see one of the most well-attended and watched annual entertainment events. “We can’t give enough thanks to the WWE, the Miami-Dade Sports Commission and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau for working together to bring Wrestlemania to South Florida, for what is hopefully the ––––––––––––– See

Letter from the Chair BY JASON LOEB

Chairman, Miami Beach Chamber Spring is officially underway. But with those May flowers comes the dreaded Spring cleaning. Yes, it’s that time to once again get our homes back in order. Everyone knows I’m certainly a fan of a cleanliness, but I’m thinking that even our companies could benefit from a little metaphorical Spring tidying as well. Here are some tips: S t a y o n t re n d. It’s out with the old and in with the new. Like the fashions in our closets, business trends change rapidly. What has worked for you over the years might not anymore, even if it’s comfortable. To remain competitive, you must always be on your toes and anticipate new trends, not just follow them. It’s a fine balance - an unwavering approach can stagnate business, while adapting too many changes can make your company appear wish-washy, so incorporate only those trends that align with your core vision and are relevant for your customers. Dust off old gems. Sometimes logistics command our attention, forcing the big picture to fall by the wayside. As leaders, it’s easy to get caught up in the web of tasks, but we really need to use our talents as visionaries. Entrust the operations to a solid manager, so you can tend to those great business ideas that got put on the backburner and make them a reality. De-clutter. Sure, an ornate design can be pretty, but it can also be distracting. Review your processes and identify and any repetitive or ineffective steps. Simplifying things not only makes things clearer for your employees, but is also likely to lead to time- and cost-efficiencies. Polish Up. Now that you have a solid infrastructure in place, refine your ideas. How can you improve upon them and/or expand to enhance the customer experience and your brand? Put together, it can be a daunting undertaking, but is well worth the organized structure, clear head and fresh perspective you and your business will enjoy once complete. Need some guidance? We at the Chamber are happy to roll up our sleeves and help via advice from our broad leadership and membership base on how to make your company sparkle. Now, let’s get scrubbing!

Fans were able to “enter the ring” to the entrance music of their favorite wrestlers and receive a video of their entrance, view live matches up close and even test out some wrestling moves in actual rings. The MBCC marketing team added to the interactive nature of the event and its fanbase through use of its social networking presence on both Facebook and Twitter. Six teams will include some of the world’s topranked players, including Rico Mansur from Brazil, who will be making his second appearance at this year’s event, following his recent return from Brazil after competing in a charity fundraiser exhibition match for Prince Harry's foundation. Last year’s champions, The Raleigh, led by team captain, Bash Kazi, will return to defend their 2011 title, and favorites including Luis Escobar, Nic Roldan, John Gobin, Kris Kampsen and Pelon Escapite are all anticipated to return to battle for this year’s coveted trophy. Maserati, HEYS USA, Don Miguel Gascón Winery and The Raleigh will also

sponsor competing men’s teams. “This year’s Maserati Miami Beach Polo World Cup is expected to be our most distinguished tournament to-date,” said Bruce Orosz, President and Co-Founder of The Polo Life, LLC. “Our inaugural competition in Chicago last year was a milestone in the development of professional U.S Beach Polo outside of Florida and this year marks a huge step towards taking our brand of event overseas in an effort to expand internationally. We thank all of our patrons, sponsors and supporters with helping to take our vision for The Polo Life to new heights.” Attendees at this year’s Maserati Miami Beach Polo World Cup will once again experience the annual series of lifestyle and evening VIP events that form an essential part of the four-day festivities. Is it really big and bad? BY ISADORE HAVENICK

On March 31st Gulfstream Park played host to the running of the Florida Derby featuring Union Rags the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby. The day featured racing, a concert, and yes gambling in the casino. On March 31st Magic City Casino presented a Wheelin Dealin Food Fest featuring over 20 twenty gourmet food trucks. The night also included a concert by Smash Mouth and Sister Hazel. Oh and yes if you wanted to play a slot machine or roulette you had the opportunity. On March 31st

Casino Miami Jai-Alai had a slightly delayed grand opening featuring a car giveaway and a performance by Carlos Oliva. Yes good citizens there were also slot machines available for play. What have casinos brought to Dade and Broward counties? On March 31st they brought gourmet food, championship thoroughbred racing, concerts by nationally known artists, promotional giveaways, and the opportunity to try your luck at a game of chance. I would hasten to point out that these games of chance generally pay back over ninety percent of the money put in the machines. When was the last time the lottery paid you back ninety percent of your investment?

CITY OF MIAMI BEACH ANNOUNCES EXCLUSIVE BEVERAGE SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT WITH THE COCA-COLA COMPANY Nothing goes better with a sunny afternoon, a visit to the beach and a stroll down Lincoln Road than an ice-cold Coca-Cola®. City of Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower today announced a 10-year sponsorship agreement with The Coca-Cola Company to serve as the city’s exclusive beverage provider. The agreement also secures Coca-Cola’s support for recycling initiatives in Miami Beach. “A partnership between two of the world’s best known and coveted brands – Coca-Cola and Miami Beach – is a natural,” said Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower. As part of the sponsorship agreement, the Company and city will launch a series of marketing and sustainability initiatives to leverage the power of both brands. These initiatives will feature a joint, Art Deco-inspired logo. The City of Miami Beach may also be included in future promotions through My Coke Rewards®, the Company’s consumer rewards program. “Since 1907, we have called South Florida home – our products are bottled locally by people who live and work in this community. Our announcement is another way we are committed to South Florida and the Miami Beach community,” said Pamela Stewart, Vice President, Foodservice On-Premise, Southeast Region, Coca-Cola Refreshments. “In addition to refreshing visitors and local residents with our brands, we will partner with the city to launch a recycling program with consumer education and recycling bins on city property.” To support the city’s sustainability initiatives, Coca-Cola will connect people to water stewardship, recycling and energy efficiency in unexpected ways. From recycling

bins along Lincoln Road to hybrid delivery trucks, Coca-Cola will demonstrate that sustainable choices are all around. Coca-Cola will also pilot five recycling machines in Miami Beach. The strategically placed machines separate, sort and crush plastic bottles and cans, creating a closedloop recycling system. Each machine features bilingual, on-screen “Give it Back” recycling messages. In addition, Miami Beach will install energy-efficient Coca-Cola vending machines at all public owned and managed facilities, including City Hall, parks and recreation centers and parking garages. “One of the exciting components of this partnership is the commitment to green initiatives,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. “Miami Beach has been a leader on sustainability efforts and Coca-Cola provides new opportunities for us to become an even more eco-friendly destination.” Coca-Cola and the City of Miami Beach both also have a long history as pop culture icons. To celebrate this heritage, the Art Deco Welcome Center will feature a CocaCola photography exhibit entitled “New Partners, Old Friends.” The photography series showcases the brand throughout the 20th century. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Arts and Culture Council (PRE)view and (RE)view Beauty at the Bass — More than a Pretty Façade

BY JUDY HOLM Vice Chair of the Arts & Culture Council, Miami Beach Chamber Pillar member

The Bass Museum of Art is the iconic bright and shiny diamond of the metro Miami art world. Rising majestically from its glorious location on Collins Avenue, it represents all that Miami has become in the milieu of fine art and innovative programming. Located on the site originally built to house the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center, the building was designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast, grandson of Miami Beach pioneer John A. Collins. First opening its doors in 1963, The Bass Museum displayed a private collection of Renaissance and Baroque works of art that was donated to the City of Miami Beach by John and Johanna Bass. Vastly evolving from its founding collection, the Bass Museum of Art currently offers a dynamic year-round calendar of exhibitions exploring the connections between contemporary art and works of art from its permanent collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculpture, textiles, Apulian Vessel Gallery and Egyptian Gallery. Artists’ projects, educational programs, lectures, and free family days complement the works on view. Architect Arata Isozaki designed an addition to the museum between 1998 and 2002 that doubled its size from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet. Most recently, the museum selected internationally acclaimed Oppenheim Architecture + Design to lead its first phase of design and renovation tied to the 2010 completion of

Miami Beach’s Collins Park. Oppenheim redesigned and relocated the museum’s arrival area to flow from and into the new park on Collins Avenue. Today, the museum thrives under the leadership of Board of Director President George Lindemann, and Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Executive Director and Chief Curator. With a mission “to inspire and educate by exploring the connections between our historical collections and contemporary art,” Silvia Karman Cubina reflects that “all art was once contemporary and inversely, that all contemporary works of art are part of a continuum of art history.” Exhibitions at the Bass Museum present art in dynamic conversations spanning time, history and cultures. Their educational programs demonstrate that art is a catalyst for creativity and positive growth, especially in the area of early childhood education. The museum provides affordable resources for the teaching community, based on sound scholarship. Education through art is paramount for our future. At the Bass Museum, education is highlighted through some very innovative programs that allow adults and children as young as two years old to appreciate art and learn about its importance in our lives. The Lindemann Family Crr eativity Center was inaugurated in the Museum in January of this year. “Finally, we have a place to experiment, essentially create a laboratory for artistic experiments, where teachers, parents and children can be inspired to solve design problems and stimulate their imaginative energies. The specially designed work tables and art equipment make this classroom space unique in South Florida,” George Lindemann. The Lindemann Family Creativity Center is the home of the museum’s IDEA@thebass programs of art classes and workshops. IDEA@thebass stands for Identify, Discuss, Envision, Assess. Developed in conjunction with Stanford University’s acclaimed Institute of Design, IDEA classes employ a method of teaching known as Design Thinking, an open ended method of problem solving that allows children to brainstorm, work in teams and engage in creative play.

A national challenge for water Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, March 30-April 30, encourages residents to save water on behalf of their city and win more than $50,000 in prizes Residents in U.S. cities will compete throughout the month of April to see whose city is the most “water wise.” The mayors of those cities earn bragging rights from winning the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, a non-profit competition, March 30-April 30, to see which leaders can best inspire their residents to make a series of informative, easy-to-use online pledges aimed at drastically slashing water and energy use across the nation. In return residents can win a Toyota Prius Hybrid from national presenting partner Toyota, water saving fixtures, and hundreds of prizes. The program is in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. “The mayor’s challenge gives communities a way to come together for one very important reason — the future of our planet,” says famed marine life artist Wyland, whose foundation piloted the Mayor’s Challenge concept to South Florida and Southern California cities in 2009 and 2011. “We see mayors making gentleman’s bets over who will win college football games. Here’s a way for them to take on an even more important challenge in a friendly, competitive way. We want to challenge every state in America to save an additional billion gallons a year over their current usage.” Others behind the program, such as National Geographic Explorer in Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle, have called the program an important step toward raising broad environmental awareness about water issues. “The steps we take for our environment in the next ten years will affect the future of our planet for the next 10,000 years.” With the nation facing $1 trillion in water infrastructure improvements in the next 25 years, mayors nationwide are encouraged to challenge their residents to conserve water, save energy, and reduce pollution on behalf of their city at www.mywaterpledge.com. Organizations spearheading the effort include the US Environmental Protection Agency, EPA WaterSense, US WYLAND Forest Service, NOAA, WaterPik,

Cities will be divided into four regions (West, Midwest, South and Northeast) and categorized by population (5,000-30,000 residents, 30,001-100,000 residents, 100,000+ residents). Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge win. Participants in the winning cities will be eligible to win over $50,000 in prizes, including the Grand Prize of a Toyota Prius Hybrid, as well as custom-designed sprinkler systems from Rain Bird, Eco-Flow Showerheads from WaterPik, Sterling water-saving toilets, and hundreds of gift cards from Lowe’s. Residents will also discover resources in their area to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water and energy resource issues to cost-saving tips at home. QUOTABLE “Water conservation will be one of the most important issues of this century,” Wyland says. “Today everyone should adopt the motto that water is life. Every drop of water on this planet counts. I hope the people of Hawaii will join me and millions of others around the world who are encouraging everyone to use our water wisely. Because by conserving water, we save energy, money and, ultimately, our planet.” “We must protect our water planet,” says National Geographic Explorer-In-Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle. Without blue there is no green. What we do in the next ten years will determine the future of our planet for the next 10,000.”

Rain Bird, Lowe’s, STERLING Plumbing, PADI and Project AWARE. The cities of Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Redondo Beach were among the first to accept the challenge. Other mayors are following suit by issuing council resolutions, creating steering committees, and using the city’s “highest” seat to urge their residents to save water, energy, and reduce pollution.

ABOUT THE WYLAND FOUNDATION Founded in 1993 by environmental artist Wyland (best known for his series of 100 monumental marine life murals), the Wyland Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is actively engaged in teaching millions of students around the county about our ocean, rivers, lakes streams, and wetlands. The foundation’s latest project, FOCUS (Forests, Oceans, Climate – and us) brings together the U.S. Forest Service, NOAA, and numerous nonprofits to teach young people about the future of our water supplies, climate, and global health. www.wylandfoundation.org

SEO: The Forefront of a Growing Internet Marketing Sector Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process through which the visibility of a website is improved within search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. Search engine optimization increases the credibility of a website, therefore establishing it in the eyes of the search engine as an ‘authority’ of a particular subject. Therefore, search engines are more likely to display the website as a top result, recommending it to users as a resource of high quality and relevance in terms of keywords searched. Leading search engines, such as Google or Yahoo!, use an algorithmic approach in order to find pages most relevant for their search results. It is for this reason that SEO is the singular most effective method to increase a website’s prominence within these search results. James Denton, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Affordable SEOs, comments, “Tactics such as link building, keyword dense copywriting, and frequently updating a site’s content can all improve the relevancy of a website in search results.” SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, and what tactics are best suited for the site and the target market. As a marketing strategy, SEO is unparalleled

in terms of effectiveness. A billboard ad on a major highway may reach many viewers; however, these viewers lack motivation and targeting. If a potential customer is searching specific keywords, they generally have the intent to buy and are in the market for whatever it is they are searching. In this regard, spending to ensure top visibility in search results generates a significant return on investment. In a digital world, it has become imperative for businesses to market online. Many companies, however, lack the necessary knowledge and manpower to successfully market on the Internet. Taking this viable concern into consideration, Denton assures that “each month, Affordable SEOs has 6-10 different experts working on a website to ensure the optimal strategy is being performed to achieve results.” Equipped with the necessary tools, an Internet marketing company can do wonders for a client in business recruitment. If you have a business in today’s world, then you have a website. And if you have a website, then you need SEO. Get the professional help required to successfully market your website online at Affordable SEOs.

SPRING SWAP-OUT: SUDSIES DRY CLEANERS & LAUNDRY HELPS SOUTH FLORIDIANS TRANSITION FROM FALL/WINTER TO SPRING/SUMMER WARDROBE The major Fashion Weeks have concluded and South Floridians are anxious to take new warm weather trends from the runways to streets. But before placing favorite knits, tweeds and wools under Summer hibernation, Sudsies Dry Cleaners & Laundry imparts tips about garment preservation. The dry cleaner specializes in stain removal, maintenance, restoration and general clothing care. “A well-kept appearance can make a strong statement, but the fabric of clothing can be quite sensitive,” says Sudsies Founder and CEO Jason Loeb. “Following a few simple care instructions can ensure that Winter wardrobe splurges reemerge looking their best for next season.” Sudsies recommends a thorough closet run-through to determine items in need of swapping out. Before placing in storage, clean each piece to prevent any stains and dirt from setting. The dry cleaner emphasizes the importance of acting fast, as the quicker stains are treated, the more likely they are able to be removed with minimal damage to the fabric. If left untreated, even topical particles will oxidize over time, permanently altering the look of the garment. Once clean, avoid placing clothing in airtight containers or plastic bags, which can lock in or harbor humidity. Instead, seek out acid-free preservation bags and boxes, muslin or 100% cotton sheets. Garments should be stored flat as possible, as creases from stringent folding can weaken the fabric. If unavoidable, buffer any folded areas with acid-free tissue paper. For hanging items, avoid foam or wire hangers. Cover the hanger with muslin or 100% cotton and distribute the weight as evenly as possible for heavier garments by using the provided or hand-made suspenders to avoid stretching of or warping by the shoulder area.

Cover the garments with another sheet of muslin or 100% cotton and place in uncramped area of primary or secondary closet. Sudsies’ core services include complimentary pick-up and delivery across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. High-tech facilities, in-depth skills and expertise and customer convenience are a part of the Sudsies S.M.I.L.E. mantra to provide friendly, impacting experiences for its clientele. 4th Annual Miami Beach Women’s Conference a Success BY CHARLOTTE LIBOV

Basic women’s rights, which were won decades ago, are now in jeopardy, and so it’s now more important than ever that women become involved in the political process and run for office, a procession of speakers told the hundreds of women who flocked to the 4th Annual Miami Beach Women’s Conference. “Getting involved is very important because women today are under attack. I have never seen issues before the legislature like the issues that are being raised today,” Democrat State Senator Gwen Margolis told the mostly female audience, which packed the commission chambers on March 16 at Miami Beach City Hall. Former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson agreed. “I find it very, very unbelievable that we are discussing issues like birth control. I just don’t have any patience for going back to the ‘50s.” “We need more people in politics. We bring a different perspective,” agreed Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, who noted that it took three tries for her to win her office before she was elected to head one of the world’s most popular destinations. “A lot of people are afraid of putting themselves out in the political arena. I lost twice, but I never went away. I continued to work in the community, so when it came the third time, I figured, ‘What do I have to lose by running?’” the mayor said, adding, “We need more women in politics. We bring a different perspective.” Also during the morning session, which was entitled “You’re Elected – Now What?” and moderated by Sherry Roberts, a member of the conference’s executive committee. The panel members also spoke about some of the discrimination they had faced when first ran for office. “Gwen and Elaine were courageous pioneers,” said Sorenson, adding, “For women, you can choose to have it all, but you can’t necessarily have it all at the same time, so you have to pick and choose what will work with the rhythm of your life.” The second part of the morning focused on

self-protection, and covered a variety of topics, ranging from legal protection for gay couples and domestic partners, protecting young girls from becoming victims of human trafficking, and now to keep your identify safe. At that panel, Beth Littrell, a staff attorney for LAMDA Legal, which fights for rights for lesbians and gays, spoke on the famous Miami case that led to a national change in the way that gay and domestic partners are treated in hospitals. At times tearing up, Littrell recounted the story of her client, Janice Langbehn, and spoke of how Langbehn and her longtime partner, Lisa Pond, were at the Port of Miami about to depart for a cruise, when suddenly Pond collapsed and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. “Janice identified herself as Lisa’s partner, and she was told that she was in a city that was prejudiced against gays,” and that she could forget about seeing Pond until she went in front of a judge, Littrell said. Pond, though, had suffered a stroke, and was dying. Langbehn was denied access to her partner and withheld information, even though she had her durable power of attorney faxed to Miami. “Equality matters, even if you’re not the one being discriminated against,” said Littrell. “We took this on because we were told that, first, this never happens and, second, that all you need is power of attorney and our client had both. So we made a federal case of it —-literally,” she added. Lambda filed a lawsuit in federal court against Jackson, and the hospital ultimately changed its policy, but not before President Obama, having heard about the case, issued an executive order to protect gay and unmarried partners, and called Langbehn to express his sympathy. Also at the second session, Assistant State’s Attorney Susan Dechovitz told the audience about the problem of human trafficking, which is a major problem in Florida cities, including Miami, she said.

Miami Beach’s female “first responders” were honored at the conference ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

She asked the women in the audience to be on the lookout for young women who may seem to be engaged in prostitute of their own free will, but are actually victims of human trafficking who are being coerced. “We need a million eyes. If you see a girl in trouble, if something funny seems to be going on, call the police and report it. We need you to join us in this fight,” she said. The afternoon program, also featured “Lunch in the Garden,” the popular outdoor luncheon featuring food prepared by more than 15 chefs and caterers, most of them female, and a silent auction. Special guest Republican Congresswoman Ileana RosLehtinen greeted everyone, and enthusiastically sampled each of the chef’s dishes. The conference’s organizers also awarded of a plaque in honor of Florida environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who is credited with preserving the Everglades thanks to her activism and her book, “River of Grass.” Also on hand were Democratic State Representative Louis Garcia, who is one of the event’s sponsors, as well as Melissa Bustos and Kaidian Cargill, the first and second-place winners, respectively, of first Randie Hofer Visionary Award, which is given annually in memory of Hofer, who served on the event’s executive committee. during her first term in office, and it is held every March, which is Women’s History Month. It is organized by Women’s Exhibit, Inc (WE), a Florida non-profit corporation whose mission is to exhibit women’s achievements of all ages and in all walks of life; by making available information, programs and facts about women’s accomplishments and by educating today’s women into becoming our catalyst for the future.

Community Association Beat

What are PUD & condo riders ...and how are they best used? BY MITCH DRIMMER, CAM Community Association Manager

Do you know what a rider in a PUD (Planned Unit Development) or a condominium contract is? Riders are a part of the ownership document when a unit is purchased in a community with a condominium or homeowner association. Riders give community associations the right to notify a bank when an owner has stopped paying dues, and subsequently gives the bank holding the unit mortgage the opportunity to pay the assessment, adding that cost to an existing unit loan. (This isn’t to say that the bank must pay but its fair warning that notice for unpaid fees allow banks to step in and do the appropriate thing). A typical rider language: “If Borrower does not pay condominium dues and assessments when due, then Lender may pay them. Any amounts disbursed by Lender under this paragraph F shall become additional debt of Borrower secured by the Security Instrument. Unless Borrower and Lender agree to other terms of payment, these amounts shall bear interest from the date of disbursement at the Note rate and shall be payable, with interest, upon notice from Lender to Borrower requesting payment.” Condominium or homeowner association members should think of riders in the same sense of premiums received from an insurance company. Should they fail to pay the premium, the policy would be canceled. Banks holding foreclosure papers will always pony up unit payments due an association to protect their collateral. If no payment is forthcoming, the community association can notify the bank as the unit’s

lender to provide a chance to pay up, just as if they were the agency collecting the insurance premium. However, the procedure to notify banks in this way is rarely used. The Florida Legislature could very easily use riders as a starting point to improve timely collections of units in default. Instead of trying to strip the associations from their rights to collect late fees, late interest, attorney and collection costs, the Legislature could simply utilize what statutes exist to require banks to cover the costs of maintaining the unit and protect their collateral. If the bank wants to postpone foreclosure, that’s their God-given right. Associations then would never really have to engage a collection company or attorney to recover their money, and banks would not have to try to strip associations from their rights to collect such costs. Backed by lots of powerful friends in Tallahassee, many banks have gotten away with non-payments that the association needs to maintain their fiscal budgets. While I don’t know what’s next in the politics of this issue, associations can and should move forward to take title to foreclosed units because the law is clear in that regard. Any association can still recover delinquent costs when banks seek formal property ownership. Associations can also intervene by taking title to monetize unit income through rental programs. They can notify banks of their intent to take action, just as PUD and condo riders say they can. Riders are there for a purpose. So why not use them? Advice for getting through a divorce

CITATION GIVING NOTICE OF PETITION FOR APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIAN FOR INCAPACITATED PERSON PURSUANT TO G.L. c. 190B, §5-304 DOCKET NUMBER: MI11P1394GD

BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

My children want to leave pictures of my ex up in the house. Help, I can’t stand looking at them! I’m sure the impulse to use them as target practice is overwhelming so let’s try this. Let your children know they can keep whatever pictures they want of him and or the family in their room. If that doesn’t pass muster with them, pick out a couple of pictures that are less bothersome to you and put them in places that you won’t see them as often. FYI, the foyer table would not be a good place. I have always had a great relationship with my ex’s family before and after the divorce. It’s been four years and I’m sensing they are pulling away and when I voice my concern they make light of it. I don’t understand. Unfortunately, divorce separates families and in-laws are no exception. As difficult as it may sound, try not to take it personally. They could be getting pressure from your ex or they are just tired of trying to juggle the relationship. It’s not because they have stopped loving you, but when life situations change, sometimes relationships have to change with them. Maybe you can think of a way to restructure your relationship with them and then sit and be honest in your discussion. By you being proactive, they will feel the pressure has been lifted from them and you quite possibly will be able to maintain some type of relationship. Now that I’m divorced and the dust has settled, I’m overwhelmed with all the life changing decisions I’m faced with. Where do I even begin?

COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS Juvenile Court Department The Trial Court Probate and Family Court

Where do you want to end up? Go from there. How are you going to reinvent yourself? Recognize that all things don’t have to be accomplished in one day or one month. Take one day at a time and pat yourself on the back at the end of the day for what you got done. Don’t focus on the few things that didn’t make it off your list. If you’ve been one that has always had your life planned out, accept that right now you might not know where you will be in four years. But, do one thing and that is to learn to enjoy the journey. What is Collaborative Divorce? I’ve heard the term before but don’t really understand what it is? Collaborative divorce is where the two parties agree not to litigate their divorce and work together. It is a non-adversarial approach. Each has their own attorney, but there is a joint accountant and a mental health professional present at the meetings. If at any time one party wants to litigate, the process is broken and the parties have to start from scratch with new attorneys. It is a great way to get divorced because it is a team approach and encourages the parties to work together and not against each other, which as we know, will draw the divorce process out unnecessarily.
