Chairman, Miami Beach Chamber This week, I’d like to take a moment and go back to our roots. Miami Beach has certainly undergone a series of transformations since the Chamber’s humble, yet enthusiast beginnings in 1921. But one thing that has remained constant over the past 90 years is our mission. The Chamber statement is simple:

To promote the economic well-being of Miami Beach’s citizens, to improve the quality of life for the entire community, and to communicate the view of the busi ness community on major issues of public policy.

the students.” To overcome recent budget challenges, Sidener has partnered with many local businesses and agencies to provide students with greater resources and opportunities such as internships and field experiences. FASA Executive Director Juhan Mixon, Ed.D. stated, “Dr. Sidener is a model principal that puts her students’ achievement at the top and involves teachers, students, parents and staff in the process to reach a defined goal. I stand by the notion that it is in fact the people that deliver on an organization, a community. However, there needs to be an anchoring force that focuses these people’s passion and ensures their efforts are maximized in the right direction. A mission statement does just this. At the Chamber, we have grown from a small umbrella stand to a state-of-the-art facility, and have capitalized on the Art Deco Renaissance, Rat Pack days and celebrity flockings. But throughout all the glamour, the our mission statement calls us back to business. To enjoy the art, culture, environment, social causes and general beauty of our environment, we must be economically viable. I go back to my mantra, “ a rising tide lifts all boats” - it’s not about just a few select companies, everyone should be working together to assist each other, in all fields, to achieve a well-rounded and sustainable city. As members, we should be remembering just that. Help all your fellow members and businessmen, even if they don’t immediately seem connected with your industry. Business is more intertwined than first –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT

WAYNE PATHMAN —

Managing Partner, Pathman Lewis, LLP You don’t have to look too far around Miami Beach to find evidence that Wayne M. Pathman has been involved. The veteran land-use attorney at Pathman Lewis, LLP has been instrumental in some of the city’s most important commercial projects over the past few years. For example, he handled all the land-use and developmental negotiations for the spectacular Fifth and Alton development, which won a Project of the Year Award from the Urban Land Institute in 2010. He represented Swedish retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) in its successful bid to occupy the historic Lincoln Theater. Pathman represented the developer of the Aqua Project on Allison Island where he was able to obtain permits for dockage. It was the first time in 25 years that the state approved such permits. Pathman was instrumental in helping raise funds for the new Miami Beach Jewish Community Center, which has recently broken ground. That fits admirably with his considerable number of community-minded affiliations in Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County. At the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Pathman is on the board of governors, the executive board of governors, and is a member of the chairman’s circle. At the Miami Children’s Museum, he is a member of the board of directors and the executive committee. Pathman is also a member of the Mt. Sinai Medical Center Founder’s Club, the University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and The Victory Center for Autistic Children. Pathman has been recognized as a “Heavy Hitter in Real Estate” by the South Florida Business Journal, named to the Super Lawyers list, named a “Top Lawyer” in the South Florida Legal Guide, and was a finalist for the Key Partners Award from the South Florida Business Journal. Pathman has been representing clients in commercial litigation matters for more than 25 years. One of his victories was a class action settlement of more than $50 million. Recently, Pathman represented a financial institution in which he was able to

recover $30 million for his client. His clients include financial institutions, auto dealers, hotel groups, municipal governments and numerous developers, including one who controlled leases designed for redevelopment of a large portion of land at Opa-Locka Executive Airport. A managing partner at Pathman Lewis, Pathman heads the environmental/land use and zoning divisions of the firm, and sits on the litigation and environmental law sections of the Florida Bar. The operational philosophy of his law firm is outside-thebox thinking, in which the firm’s attorneys are encouraged to find practical solutions to litigation problems that other parties have overlooked. That focus, plus the advantage that the firm’s partners have worked together for many years, has created a law office of unique flexibility in which teamwork, communication and a wide variety of skills from multiple disciplines combine to achieve ideal results for their clients. Pathman lives in Miami Beach with his wife Leslie and their two children, daughter Madison and son Logan. Pathman says there’s no greater place to live than Miami Beach, and no better feeling than giving back to the city he has called home his entire life.

ed and choreographed works of art in many forms, ranging from the invitation design and the awards creation, to visual arts, music and dance. Gala invitees received a commemorative print representing the 90th Annual Dinner Gala and its theme, “Celebrating Success.” This limited series of prints was designed by celebrated local artist Mark T. Smith, from the original 48” x 48” work of art- a gift to the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds of the sale of the painting will be used to fund the Chamber’s Miami Beach Education Foundation, a 501c3 dedicated to bringing together the strengths and resources of the community to support the needs of public education in Miami Beach by way of financing scholarships, school programming and most notably the International Baccalaureate program. The FIU Jazz Ensemble welcomed attendees to the red carpet and set the tone for the evening, with an upbeat and sophisticated style facilitated by Brian Schriner, the Chamber’s Arts and Culture Council Chair and Dean of the FIU College of Architecture and the Arts. During the awards ceremony, the honorees received a hand-crafted art piece designed by students from FIU College of Architecture and the Arts, one of the newest institutions to move to Miami Beach. Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History Jacek J. Kolasiƒski worked closely with the students and alumni to create these personalized originals. Commemorating the success of Miami Beach High School, representatives from the Marching Band regaled attendees into the main dining room. America’s Orchestral Academy was the center piece of the evening with an exclusive performance by the New World Symphony, accompanied by a creative performance art video production using art from the Bass

Museum, the Wolfsonian and from the Art in Public Places of Miami Beach. Each visual masterpiece served as a reminder of the importance of art and culture in our community, and also acknowledged our five honorees’ lifetime of civic contributions. A select group of musicians from the Symphony created an indelible memory of the evening, playing a customized classical musical selection for the Gala, Mozart’s Serenata Notturna, or “evening serenade”a perfect tribute to the guests and honorees! Arts and Culture Council member and Assistant Vice President of New World Symphony Development Stacey Glassman Mizener was actively involved in not only the Symphony’s performance, but also in all of the evening’s artistic elements. What is a Gala without dancing? Guests were riveted by a sizzling performance by the Miami Contemporary Dance Company. We are grateful for the wonderful collaboration with this premier dance company and its Founding Artistic Director, Ray Sullivan. Not only did Gala-goers have the opportunity to watch some of the finest dancers in Miami Beach, but the musical vibes also readied guests to dance the night away in the post-dinner lounge sponsored by City National Bank. The signature portion of the event provided a time to socialize with Cuban cigar rollers, specialty desserts and dancing with a DJ live instrumental combination. With arts and cultural elements shining in the background, the biggest and brightest spotlights were on the five exceptional honorees. Their outstanding contributions to the community deserve the gratitude of the Chamber and congratulations on their well-deserved awards. The 2012 Gala celebrated ninety years of success of the Chamber of Commerce as well as the five individuals who have created success within both their own lives and our community.

Hurricane Tips... Are We Ready? BY COMMISSIONER SALLY A. HEYMAN

With the 2012 Hurricane Season beginning on June 1st and running through November 30th, the office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, District 4, wants to help get you ready. It is important that YOU develop your own personal disaster plan on how you will protect your household and property. Most of these things can be done well in advance of storm warnings. • Check your insurance coverage and be sure it includes replacement coverage, flood and wind protection. • Establish an out-of-state or out-of-

Miami-Dade County area phone number to relay messages to friends and family. • Familiarize yourself with your evacuation zone and nearest Red Cross Evacuation Center (shelter of last resort). • Make a plan for the care of your pets during an emergency. Call 3-1-1 to get information on Miami-Dade County’s PetFriendly Hurricane Shelters. • Start buying extra shelf food and storing clean/empty plastic bottles (to fill later for water). Each week look for tips to help you create a personal hurricane plan. Should you have questions regarding these tips or any other issue in District 4 please call our district office at 305-787-5999 or email us at District4@miamidade.gov.

COMMISSIONER ’S CORNER

Hats off to our Police Department BY COMMISSIONER JERRY LIBBIN

For the past eleven years, Memorial Day weekend has been a nightmare for our residents and an extremely difficult weekend for the City to manage, particularly for our police department. We know that the expectations of the community were that we would not tolerate a repeat of last year’s disastrous events, and that our officers would control the crowds and enforce our quality of life ordinances. I spent part of Saturday night walking the streets of South Beach with Chief Ray Martinez and Assistant Chief Mark Overton, as well as several hours on Sunday afternoon with Captain David De La Espriella. During the hours that I spent on South Beach, I am pleased to report that the crowds were very well-behaved and I found that the level of planning for this weekend by the City, in conjunction with the police department and all other major departments, was time very well spent. There were many improvements that were made this year, all of which in my opinion made a significant difference to the feeling of the safety that almost everyone enjoyed this year. I want to start by recognizing Captain Henry Doce, who was the architect of the traffic loop. Although this was somewhat inconvenient for South Beach residents, I have heard a resounding “thank you” from residents who finally had their neighborhood streets back. The barri-

cades that kept visitors’ cars from entering the neighborhood streets and taking precious parking spots were a big hit. Additionally, by keeping visitors from parking in the interior residential streets, we avoided the accompanying noise pollution of tourists returning to their vehicles in the wee hours of the morning. Some of the other significant improvements this year included the rental of light towers along Ocean Drive. These lights, along with two brand new Miami Beach police towers with mounted night vision cameras, increased Ocean Drive security tremendously. I also must say that it was a big plus to have the license plate readers placed on police vehicles on the Julia Tuttle Causeway. These machines were able to scan a vehicle’s license plate and within four seconds generate a report if the vehicle had any outstanding warrants, if the license was suspended, or if the vehicle was stolen. Our officers were able to stop approximately 40 vehicles before they ever entered the city as a result of this equipment, thus preventing potential troublemakers from ever getting to South Beach. Similarly, the DUI checkpoint that was used on Friday night on the Macarthur Causeway yielded numerous arrests and individuals who were intoxicated, or who had guns, or drugs from entering the city. All in all, I take my hat off to our administration for the meticulous planning that went into making this the safest Memorial Day weekend experience for everyone, but I want to pay particular thanks to the Miami Beach Police Department led by Chief Ray Martinez for an outstanding job.

Selecting a Professional Management Company — You get what you pay for

BY MARCY L. KRAVIT

CMCA, AMS, PCAM Atlantic & Pacific Management Every community requires care, energy, motivation, and enthusiasm. Whether it is a small garden style community or a large high-rise building, hiring a professional management company has many advantages in the operations of maintaining and operating a quality community association. Many boards have attempted to run associations with owner volunteers. This is an attractive option due to no additional management costs. However, trying to do it all yourself—utilizing homeowner volunteers—is difficult and does not work for many associations. As the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for!” The association’s board of directors is responsible for maintaining and protecting community assets. A business approach to managing the community must be accomplished. Professional management companies assist in developing programs, policies, procedures, and budget packages. In the design and start-up phase, the guidance of a professional management company can assist in avoiding costly mistakes. In managing older communities, the expertise and experience of the company can offer a wide array of services. In order to get the best results when considering hiring a management company, outline all expectations. Some questions to ask may include: What items are you displeased about with the current management? Are management reports provided routinely? Is the property properly maintained? Are personnel performing to the highest standards? Are the finances of the association in order? Is the method of reporting accurate and timely? Are delinquencies handled appropriately? Are violations handled timely? Is the current management pro-

viding quality customer service? Is the communication between the board and management satisfactory? Hiring a professional management company that exhibits expertise, education, and experience is necessary to competently manage a community association. A quality management company will have a human resource department with knowledge of employment practices, handling the financial aspect of payroll, and related employee benefits. In addition, the company may offer a manager that oversees several properties at the same time (multi-site or portfolio) and a manager who manages only one site at a time (single-site or onsite). Atlantic | Pacific Management is an excellent example of a local company that offers an array of services to meet the special needs of their clients. Companies such as Atlantic | Pacific Management may convene with the association’s board of directors and attorney to address legal issues that could concern the owners. Another common responsibility is reviewing any proposed alterations or improvements by homeowners to their properties to ensure that they do not go against community guidelines. Atlantic | Pacific Management has the ability to provide capable managers who can assist the board of directors in protecting the interest of the members by reviewing insurance policies and making arrangements for proper insurance coverage. Hiring a professional management company can be a rewarding experience because they offer such a wide variety of skills and services. A reputable management company should make every effort to provide customer satisfaction. The end result should be a well-run, professionally managed community. The $outh Florida Gaming Repor t

Voters will answer the question in Lee County BY ISADORE HAVENICK

On May 22nd the Lee County commissioners voted by a 4-1 margin to put the slots question on the November ballot. The simple issue is if the residents of Lee County want to permit the operation of slot machines at the Naples-Ft. Myers Dog Track. A similar question will be on the ballot in Palm Beach County as it relates to slot operations at the Palm Beach Kennel Club.

It seems that more and more local governing bodies want to allow the voters the right to decide the question of whether or not to allow gaming in their respective counties. The referendums limit gaming to already operating parimutuel facilities and are also restricted to the operation of slot machines. The most positive aspect of slots approval is the potential job creation, both in construction and then in full time positions that usually average close to $40,000 annually. It is high time that the local governing bodies decided to let the voters decide the question of gaming in their own backyard. What an amazing concept!

NATIONAL TRAVEL AND TOURISM STRATEGY A BIG WIN FOR INDUSTRY The Obama Administration gave a tremendous boost to our travel and tourism industry on May 10, 2012 by making our interests a national priority when it released the first-ever National Travel and Tourism Strategy. This is a major victory for members and others in the travel community, who have demanded more from Washington in recent years and been rewarded with the respect we deserve. It is a team effort and affirms what can be accomplished when we speak as an industry with a clear message and many voices. The Administration’s action recognizes travel and tourism as making a critical contribution to our economy and provides us with an opportunity to establish travel and tourism as fundamental to America’s prosperity. Since the job recovery began, our industry has created more than 260,000 new jobs, far outpacing job growth in the rest of the economy. The strategy outlined on May 10, 2012 by U.S. Secretary of Commerce John Bryson and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, who co-chaired an intra-agency task force to develop the plan, commits our government to address numerous issues that can help improve travel to and within the United States and increase American jobs in the process. NATIONAL STRATEGY HIGHLIGHTS The National Travel and Tourism Strategy broadly includes: Expanding the governn ment’s promotional efforts to market the United States as a destination: This will include greater visibility of travel and tourism by senior officials, using technology and data resources more effectively, and coordinating with Brand USA to promote international travel to the U.S. The strategy sets a goal of increasing American jobs by attracting and welcoming 100 million international visitors annually by the end of 2021, more than a 50 percent increase over the number expected this year. Enabling and enhancinn g greater facilitation of travel to and within the U.S.: This includes taking action to expand the Visa Waiver P rogram, improving visa processing, expanding the trusted traveler program and improving screening processes at airports, and using grants to improve transportation infrastructure.

In the current economic climate, I am getting a lot of requests to keep things as cost effective as possible, which is something we at FS2D Design Group, Inc. do with every project anyway. The fact of the matter is there is a lot that can be done on the client end, and knowing those things ahead of time puts you in a lot more control of how much you will spend. Here are some areas where you can control your costs: RESEARCH YOUR PROJECT COSTS: Whether you are likely to design a living room or fully remodel your kitchen, you need to do some homework to determine a reasonable budget. One helpful resource is Remodeling Magazine’s annual “cost versus value” report on some of the most popular remodeling projects. The most recent report is accessible on the magazine web site. A knowledgeable Interior Designer should also be able to advise you on costs from mid-range to high-end projects. INVEST IN THE BEST THE FIRST TIME: It is easy when you are doing it yourself to buy gap pieces. You know when you don’t have time to find the right piece, so you just put any piece in place with the idea that you’ll eventually replace it. This is expensive in the long run because you will end up spending twice or more as much as you would have if you chose the

best piece in the first place. So, before you do anything hire a professional to help you and get the right and best pieces the first time. There are also many technical considerations to take into account aside from creating a beautiful unified look. From creating a concept to drafting plans and selecting proper materials and furnishes, design professionals know the best resources and have access to sources that aren’t available to the general public. Designers are also entitled to a discount that consumers are not privy to and that will save you money on your furniture. FIND THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR: Construction costs can be expensive and costly if the project is not handled correctly. When selecting a contractor, make sure he is a licensed and insured professional. Your designer can save you time and money by recommending professionals with integrity who will provide services for a reasonable price and deliver the project on time within budget. As always, I hope these recommendations will inspire you. Just be creative, enjoy the process and have fun with it!

Personal Branding Lesson: Be More! BY DEBORAH SHANE

and lead with them and live in them.

The reality TV show explosion runs the gamet now from fashion, food, music, art and dance to business! What I love about it is that these are real people, real talent literally unknown and making sandwiches in a town of 250, to being on the national stage with millions of viewers! Talk about viral, overwhelming and the opportunity of a lifetime! The things that all the judges on these shows look for when picking the top contenders is a combination of talent that is unique, stands out and has a variety of assets. Randy Jackson often tells the American Idol contestants to figure out what kind of artist they want to be, figure out where they fit in musically and be unique in that niche. The top chefs are not only creative with cooking but must be good leaders that can run a restaurant. The fashion designers are innovative stylists but must have business sense. In the business world the combination of our unique talents, skills and expertise, combined with our creativity, personality and spirit all combine to help us stand out, get noticed and succeed. Here are 5 Keys to Styling Your Personal Brand.

Mount Sinai Medical Center celebrates National Nurses Week Mount Sinai recognizes 24 outstanding nurses and five nursing scholarship recipients

Nurses at Mount Sinai have many roles and responsibilities. From medical/surgical nurses to nurse educators, nurse practitioners and nurse researchers, they all go about their jobs with passion for the profession and a commitment to patient safety. Each year, Mount Sinai joins the nation in celebrating National Nurses Week in honor of these dedicated individuals, who represent the largest group of professionals in healthcare. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, and continues through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. As part of the Nurses Week festivities, Mount Sinai recognized 24 outstanding nurses during an awards program on Wednesday, May 9, in

Jerrold & Jane Goodman (center) with Goodman scholarship recipients Mark Dessources, Sheroline Eccles, Julian Kerr and Fernando V. Chacon. Not pictured: Marie Alcidere.

the hospital’s Harris Garden. Huong Phan was named the 2012 Nurse of the Year. Phan, who has been part of the Mount Sinai family for just over a year, was among 24 individuals named “Nurse of the Unit, based on nominations by their colleagues and directors. She was praised for the way she cares about her patients, as well as her professionalism, patience and enormous team spirit. The awards were made possible through the Harris Institute of Nursing, which recognizes nurses for their professionalism, compassion and their dedication to patient care. The late Sidney Harris established the institute as a way to honor the nursing staff

that cared for his late wife, Ruth, during her hospitalization at Mount Sinai. In addition, five employees received scholarships to defray the cost of their nursing school expenses. Presented annually since 1994, the $1,000 scholarships are made possible by Jane and Jerrold Goodman and Goodman’s mother, the late Ruth Schwartz. The scholarships are awarded to full-time employees based on their work, school performance and their demonstration of good customer service skills. Congratulations to all Mount Sinai Nursing award winners and scholarship recipients!

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ Divorce Coach

I am getting divorced. What do I need to do to make this transition as smooth as possible for my children and me? Create a support system for yourself. Have a great attorney, forensic accountant, estate attorney, financial planner, divorce life coach, therapist and good friends. I can’t stress enough how important it is to meet with an estate attorney and financial planner before you go to mediation. There are also Family Wizard and Aftermath that are worth looking into. Family Wizard will aid you with communication with your ex and Aftermath will help you tie up all the many loose ends after the divorce. Surround yourself with positive people and be patient with yourself as divorce is a process. But if you lay the groundwork, things will go smoother and you’ll feel confident that you’ve covered all your bases. I’m having a really hard time being around my best friends who are married and buying a summer home. I feel like everyone around me is moving forward with their life and I’m moving backwards. It’s all about how you look at things. You are not moving backwards, you are just embarking on a different path. Share in the joy with your friends and that positive energy will bring positive things back your way. Set goals and push forward with them. Find something that really excites you and immerse yourself in it. Don’t focus on what you don’t have, focus on what you do have and give thanks for all the great things yet to come. I have to sell my home and I am so distraught over this. People don’t understand how I feel and I’m tired of hearing them say the same old things — “It’s too big”, “It’s

DIVORCE COACH just a house”, “It’s time to move on”, etc. How will I ever make this transition without falling apart? On top of that, my children are upset and I have to appear positive, when I’m not. In order to have a new dream we have to let go of the old one and that can be heartbreaking, but only in the present tense. Look to the future with the excitement of the unknown. Yes, your home holds memories of the past and memories of dreams hoped for, but move on to new dreams. Give yourself permission to grieve the loss of your home and all that it represents. But know that this isn’t the end of something, but the beginning. Be honest with your children about your feelings and let them express theirs. This is a life lesson for them. They will see and learn resiliency and adaptability. Allow yourself to get excited about this new chapter. Learn to trust in what you don’t see yet. Take it one day at a time and move forward with confidence. Note to Self: It’s not just about surviving; it’s about getting through it stronger and wiser.
