C
ANDO Arts Coop is a contemporary Art Center in Miami Beach that was founded by Ray Breslin, president of Collins Park Neighborhood Association (CPNA) in November, 2009. CANDO, which stands for Cultural Arts Neighborhood Districts Overlay is in the Collins Park neighborhood. The thought-provoking work of resident and guest artists is showcased in 5000 square feet of gallery space. The historic building, known as Palm Court, is a work of art in itself, with archways framing tall display windows. Having been previously occupied by the W Hotel’s administrative offices, the gallery’s interior is impeccably designed. Over a dozen profession-
al artists display their work in sections of the contemporary atmosphere. The center space is used for special exhibits. The artwork at CANDO Arts Co-op is not only emotionally stimulating but is created from a diverse assortment of materials. For instance, various types of plastic bags are the fabric for a collection of clothing by Lucinda Linderman. She has also turned her junk mail into

To Our Community To the Miami Beach Community, As I near the end of my second year as Chairman of the Board of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, it’s with great pride that I can report that our Chamber’s future has never been brighter. Riding the momentum from a number of hugely successful initiatives such as the Miami Beach INcard, a joint venture with the City of Miami Beach and Visitors & Convention Authority, as well as a landmark Dinner Gala and significant policy initiatives, the Chamber has never been more relevant to its businesses and community at large. The opportunity to work with the Community Newspapers to bring insight into the economic impacts of Miami Beach is exciting. Miami Beach has so much to offer as an international destination as well as a close-knit community of long standing residents. We are fortunate to have Jerry Libbin as our new President and CEO and Ana Cecilia Velasco as our new COO. This administrative team has the talent and experience to take our Chamber to new heights. I have every confidence that the Chamber will continue to flourish under the leadership of Jason Loeb as the incoming Chair and reach global recognition. I am grateful to have served this community through the Chairmanship of the Board of Governors and will continue to serve with efforts to improve Miami Beach’s visibility through this established institution. Using advertisements from the 1950s and 60s, Sid Daniels relays messages about women and sexuality in his collage on paper pieces. Augusto Esquivel creates threedimensional images by suspending hundreds of buttons which have been precisely aligned; Paula Turk makes abstract sculptures from welded metal; Paul Saint Laurent works with wood to create contemporary wall pieces and large, sculptured bowls. Annfaye uses dead bugs and rusty nails in her sculptures of melancholy heads. Her contemporary figurative paintings on canvas cast a similar, curious aura. COMMISSIONNER’S CORNER BY JERRY LIBBIN Miami Beach Commissioner
Each issue of the Miami Beach News, I will select a complaint or suggestion that I have received that I believe will be of interest to other residents of Miami Beach and publishing the comments or suggestion in this column. If you have an idea that you believe will benefit the residents of Miami Beach send it to my commission office at Jerry@miamibeachfl.gov and perhaps you will see it printed in the Miami Beach News. I recently received this suggestion from Dwight Kraai. Dwight suggests that the present City Water and Waste Water rate structure is not designed for conservation and it also penalizes low water users at the expense of high water users. He states that the rate structure has a minimum water charge that requires some meter owners to pay for water they do not use. The minimum depends on the size of the pipe and meter. Those using less than the minimum, have no incentive to conserve water. He also states that the water rate is flat, which lessons the incentive for high water users to implement water conservation measures. Dwight believes that the City Commission should be presented with a water
rate structure with no minimum usage and a progressive rate structure for approval at our September Commission meeting when we adopt our 2010-2011 budget. Dwight believes that with a progressive rate schedule, some meter users will pay more for water, but, most likely a majority will pay less. He also sent me the water rates for consumers of smaller quantities and larger quantities in several nearby cities, including Hollywood and Hialeah. Dwight, I think you are on to something here, and I will be asking some of these questions for you at our September Commission meeting. I recall that we had a discussion about this at a previous Commission meeting over a year ago and I know that the city purchases our water from the county and then sells it to our residents. Both the county and the city have expenses associated with operating a water department and have to cover their costs. The water in Miami Beach is part of an enterprise and is therefore not able to make a profit, but is required to charge sufficiently to cover all of our costs. This does not mean that we can’t be more efficient in how we deliver our water, nor does it mean that we can’t look into developing a more equitable system for charging residents and business more fairly for their actual amount of consumption.

Commissioner Jerry Libbin (left) and Mike Burke
Addressed to Commissioner Libbin; I think it was about 18 months ago that you and I went for a walk along Bay Road and West Avenue to check on rights-ofway designated for the Baywalk. It wasn’t that easy, was it? In fact, some people were even chasing the neighbors off completed sections at that time. Fortunately, things changed after the Lincoln West residents took note, and we were on our way. While most people are now aware of the Baywalk concept, many are not. In addition, many of the historical details of this amenity have never been fully explained to the public due to underlying litigation. Thus, it is important that we remind residents about the rights-of-way granted to pedestrians on Biscayne Bay from Lincoln Rd. to the South Pointe Pier by waterfront property owners about 10 years ago. These exchanges or easements were in return for the city’s permission to build condos out of scale and compatibility with the neighborhoods. Thus, for example, the Flamingo and the Waverly are much larger and different in design from nearby structures. With the settlement of litigation with the Flamingo in Dec of 2009, came pedestrian access to over 1600 linear feet of frontage on the bay. This win, combined with an earlier one over the Waverly that year, clarified the vision of the Baywalk, as an operating amenity; especially as a walkway between Lincoln Rd and the MacArthur Causeway. Citizens now realize that the Baywalk is a right, not a gift granted by soft-hearted developers. It has taken the city 10 years to assert that right over obdurate corporate interests. The city has taken some action in addi-
tion to suing developers for access. Last June, a Baywalk charette was held at the Botanical Gardens. It was a packed house. Also, at the behest of former Commissioner Saul Gross, the Beach Committee was renamed the Waterfront Protection Committee and given purview over the Baywalk. Another Commissioner at the time, Victor Diaz, was equally supportive of the Baywalk, and kept the administration’s feet to the fire by insisting upon regular reports at Commission meetings. I hope that the present Commission continues to be officially vigilant in pursuing the completion of the Baywalk. Developers are already behind schedule in building sections behind the Mondrian and submitting plans for construction behind the Flamingo. Perhaps they think the city will fall asleep at the wheel for another ten years. I hope not, and I know that you are on our side. In closing, I would like to request that the city follow through on our request for a public service spot on channel 77, explaining the Baywalk concept and progress thus far. Another charette would also be nice. Why not put that on T.V.? Regarding our questions about permit applications to the State and County pertaining to waterfront impacts, the City has invited us to file a Public Information Request! (How’s that for cooperation?) Perhaps you could help us follow up on these items. Keep up the good work Jerry, and help us stay on top of this project. It’s clear that we have our work cut out for us. Thanks. Sincerely, Mike Burke

‘Mat Crawl’ Challenge will energize Miami Yoga Community Every September yoga studios, students and instructors celebrate National Yoga Month in a variety of ways. From enormous gatherings of yogis, gurus and groupies to studio specials, giveaways and contests this is the month to get involved in this ancient practice if you live in the U.S. One studio that is going all out this year is the rapidly growing Miami based company Green Monkey. The Monkeys currently have two locations. One is on Sunset Drive in South Miami and another is near Sardinia and Seven Salon in the up and coming area of Sunset Harbor in Miami Beach. With a third Tree House opening in Midtown this fall the Monkeys may be one of the most excited yoga companies to celebrate National Yoga Month this September. In honor of their industry’s national celebration Green Monkey is partnering with Whole Foods Market to host a Yoga Challenge for yogis all around the Miami area. “We really wanted to do something special this year,” co-founder Michael Likhov said. “People respond well to challenges and competitions, so we decided to give them another reason to get on their mat this September.” With the health benefits of yoga ranging from increased flexibility, to weight loss, stress relief, improved endurance and increased physical strength one has to wonder why anyone would need yet another reason to practice yoga, but the Monkeys have provided one. Starting on September 1, 2010 the Monkeys and Whole Foods Market are challenging all yoga lovers to participate in a “mat crawl.” The challenge is simple
enough — take five classes with five participating teachers and you’ll receive a prize. Practice with ten different teachers, get another prize, with larger and larger prizes being offered after fifteen, twenty and finally thirty different teachers in thirty days. “People will really have to be dedicated,” Likhov said. “Thirty days of yoga is pretty impressive, so that’s why we’re making the grand prize as huge as it is.” The grand prize is a free yearlong membership to Green Monkey for students that practice with thirty different teachers. “If someone can do that,” Likhov said. “Then I’m more than happy to have them practicing with us for free. That’s a dedicated student and they’re definitely a Monkey.” Participants simply have to come into one of Green Monkey’s Tree Houses to register for the challenge. The first 60 students that register will also receive $10 gift certificate to Whole Foods.
range from gift certificates to Whole Foods, Green Monkey t-shirts, free services from Green Monkey all the way up to the grand prize. But what the “Monkeys” are mostly looking to do is get people excited about all the teachers they have participating. “We’re working with everyone from Kino MacGregor to our experienced instructors to all our new Yoga Teacher Training Graduates,” Likhov said. “Yoga is about community and this is a great way for people to find new teachers, and expand their yoga community.” So, if ever you were interested in doing a tour of yoga teachers in the Miami area the best time to start is September 1, 2010. And if, along the way, you experience some of the multiple benefits that yoga can offer, it can’t possibly hurt. Stop by one of Green Monkey’s Tree House locations at either 5792 Sunset Drive, South Miami Fl, 33143 or 1827 Purdy Avenue, Miami Beach, Fl 33139, or call for more information in South Miami 305-669-4949 or in Miami Beach 305-397-8566. “We’re not charging for the challenge itself,” explained Danielle Pricken, Design Director at Green Monkey. “All our regular rates apply, people just have to come in and pick up a few things from us, like the brochure, and then just start taking classes.” In an effort to really bring the yoga community together, Green Monkey extended the challenge to other studios, encouraging teachers from the Standard, Miami Life Center, Prana Yoga and many other studios to get involved as well. The prizes Green Monkey is offering

Join the Mission to Shanghai
On October 9, 2010, business leaders from Miami Beach along with representatives from the Miami Beach Visitor & Convention Authority and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau will join the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and embark on a week long delegation visit to the tourist destination and largest center of commerce in eastern China, Shanghai. Described by many as the “showpiece” of the world’s fastest-growing economy, the purpose and mission of the trip is to help forge business relationships and cultural exchange between Shanghai and Miami Beach and assist in promoting tourism to Greater Miami and the Beaches. The Miami Beach Chamber, led by President & CEO Jerry Libbin, has been working in partnership with the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendships with Foreign Countries to focus on providing a VIP visit for their guests, which will
include VIP tours of the Chinese Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, the Port of Shanghai, the Jewish Quarter, Water Town, the Jade Buddha Temple, Yu Gardens, the Shanghai Museum and Government Center, and a river tour on the Bund. “This is a fantastic opportunity to visit China and the World Expo, while also helping to build the brand of Miami Beach internationally,” said Libbin. Along with the opportunity to visit these key locations in Shanghai, the Miami Beach Chamber has been able to secure a meeting with American Express owned Travel and Leisure Magazine Shanghai, editor in chief, Mr. Xie Fang Wei, to discuss coverage of Miami Beach in a future edition of the Travel and Leisure China edition. There are only a few openings left and those interested can contact Valerie Rasken at 305-695-6833 or via email at Valerie@miamibeachchamber.com for more information.

2010 Mazda SPEED3 is a different kind of Mazda 3 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS From a distance, the 2010 Mazda SPEED3 looks a lot like its Mazda3 siblings, with its five-point grille and sleek lines, but slide behind the steering wheel and step on the gas and immediately you will know the difference. The Mazda SPEED3 is a performance car for enthusiasts and that’s why it has become so popular with today’s younger consumers. It blends the five-door functionality of the Mazda3 five-door sedan with more aggressive styling and performance. With the hot new 263 hp MZR 2.3-liter DISI Turbo engine under the hood, the new Mazda SPEED3 builds on the performance of the original, but adds a new look and even better handling. Engine output is more consistent, thanks to the hood-mounted intercooler scoop that not only improves intercooler airflow over the grille-mounted intercooler duct, but also frees grille space for a fresh-air duct to feed the engine’s intake, improving efficiency and boosting power and fuel economy.
The gear ratios in the compact three-shaft gearbox have been revised, with second through fifth gear getting slightly taller to make better use of engine torque and provide a more seamless power delivery. The advanced torque management system also has been recalibrated to better minimize torque steer by adjusting torque output based on gear position and steering angle. As for design, the Mazda SPEED3 is distinguished from its siblings by a lower air dam and round fog lights that frame a metallic black grille. The hood houses an intercooler scoop to improve charge air cooling and the front fenders are flared to accommodate the wider tires. New 18-inch aluminum wheels are modeled on the lightweight forged wheels of the RX-8 R3, while sculpted side skirts and a lower stance intimate the vehicle’s performance capability. The rear is marked by larger dual exhaust tips, a metallic black valance and a larger roof-mounted rear wing. The Nagare-inspired design of the exterior continues into the cabin. Black is the keynote color throughout the interior, while the seats and trim fabric have an organic red graphic design. The design is distributed throughout, with red stitching enhancing the steering wheel, seats, door trim, shift lever boot and center armrest. The dashboard gives a roomy feel to the interior and gauges display infor-

Standard equipment includes variable intermittent windshield wipers, roof-mounted aerodynamic antenna, illuminated vanity
mirrors, electroluminescent gauges, aluminum pedals and dual-zone climate control. Base price on the 2010 Mazda SPEED3 is $23,195. The winning formula for Graspa Group Graspa Group, Graziano Sbroggio’s restaurant management company, was established to streamline the operations of five very successful dining venues: TiramesU, Spris, The Van Dyke Café and Segafredo on Lincoln Road, as well as Maitardi in the Design District. Graspa Group also manages Spuntino Bakery & Catering and events at Ice Palace Studios, all while creating a brand synonymous with innovation and professionalism. With the company growing, it was essential to become a little more “corporate”, but still keep the “homey” feel that attracts employees and patrons. And getting a group of Italians to conform to the American culture and ways of doing things proved to be quite challenging in the beginning (but Graziano wouldn’t admit to that!). But with HR, Accounting, Inventory Control, Social Media and Marketing Departments, along with a dynamic group of managers, Graspa Group is well equipped to handle the responsibility. The group of experienced professionals that challenge and support one another, working toward a common goal, is the very reason Graspa Group exists and the cornerstone of its success. But to
talk about Graspa Group one must start from the very beginning… Graziano Sbroggio landed on Miami Beach’s sunny shores in 1990. He took a job working for family friends, the Fregonese family, managing TiramesU restaurant. Ten years later he became a partner in TiramesU and never looked back. In October 1998, Graziano decided to open Spris “La Pizzeria del TiramesU”, just two doors down from TiramesU. Although the two restaurants share the same ownership, there are distinct differences between the two. TiramesU is more formal with white tablecloths, a full bar, expansive menu and subtle lighting. Spris offers a large variety of wood-burning brick oven pizzas and specialty sandwiches and salads, along with a selection of beers and wines. The atmosphere at Spris is casual, the serv-

ice efficient and all at very reasonable prices. Graziano was the first to offer Segafredo coffee in the Miami area. Due to the close business relationship with Segafredo’s owner Massimo Zanetti, Graziano approached the company with the idea of opening a Segafredo Cafe in Miami Beach. Teaming his efforts with co-owner Mark Soyka, of News Café fame, Segafredo Espresso opened on June 10th, 2000. Under the direction of Luca Voltarel, Segafredo will commemorate 10 years of success with an upcoming 10th anniversary celebration, and the casually chic venue shows no sign of slowing down. The lure is easy; if you love people-watching it tends to be Miami’s best spot. Its outdoor café setting attracts tourists, locals, pet-lovers and many interesting personalities. To meet the growing demands of his restaurant operations, Graziano opened Spuntino Bakery in 2001 with the Executive Chef at TiramesU, Carlo Donadoni. Donadoni’s experience and Northern Italian training made him the obvious choice. Spuntino Bakery was created to supply homemade breads, pastas and pizza dough to the restaurants. In 2004, Spuntino Catering was named the official catering division of Graziano’s growing empire, another endeavor with Donadoni at the helm. Spuntino Catering specializes in European style full service catering for weddings, social and charitable events and corporate functions. In January 2007, Graziano undertook his
biggest endeavor thus far when he partnered with Luca Voltarel and Mark Soyka once again in the historic Van Dyke Café, an American indoor/outdoor bistro on Lincoln Road. He gave the second floor a much needed facelift and brought back the live music that this lounge was known for, with a monthly entertainment line-up boasting an eclectic mix of local and national live music acts, in genres from funk and Latin to soul and R&B, in addition to jazz. September 2009 marked yet another restaurant opening with Luca Voltarel, this time adding another partner, long time Corporate Chef, Alberto Marcato. Maitardi, loosely translated from Italian as “never late”, offers a causal, relaxed atmosphere in the heart of the Design District with moderately priced Northern Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner. This beautiful site boasts a fantastic four thousand square foot outdoor terrace shaded by 150 year old white oak trees, offering the best al fresco dining in the area. A brightly tiled mosaic mural is a beautiful backdrop to the terrace, which includes an outside bar and wood burning oven. The addition of Noche Latina, every third Thursday of the month, has also brought in a new live music scene alluring patrons that love to dance under the stars. And so Graspa Group was born, striving to make patrons think of their venues as a home away from home. Simple food, great service and unique ambiance have become key ingredients to the winning formula. The age-old Italian combination of good food and good people has made Sbroggio a well-known businessman in Miami and has grown the company to more than 350 employees. Graspa’s slogan says it all: “We are food people. It’s what we do. It’s what we love.” Graspa Group is located at 1112 N. Miami Avenue, Second Floor. 305-5321233. www.graspagroup.com

STEP UP: Global Spectrum The enjoyment of practicing Total Environmental Plan law on Miami Beach Global Spectrum has saved the City of Miami Beach hundreds of thousands of dollars in the operation of the Miami Beach Convention Center through implementation of a company-wide total environmentally conscious plan known as STEP UP (Global Spectrum Total Environmental Plan). In the 2009 fiscal year, Global Spectrum saved over 100 tons of recyclable materials that would have otherwise ended-up in the landfill. “We made sure when we arrived in Miami Beach that reducing facility costs with a more effective energy plan was one of our main goals,” said Balsam. “This program is designed to conserve energy, recycle goods, and promote a healthy environment for the Convention Center and City of Miami Beach.” In addition to these energy savings, Global Spectrum’s operations department has developed a single-stream recycling program intended to simplify the recycling process for the Convention Center, as well as its exhibitors and attendees at their consumer shows, tradeshows, and other events. Some of our 2009 highlights include the following: Completed retrofit of manual HVAC controls to a fully automated state of the art computerized system. Adjusted 3 way water valves which consume considerable energy to operate as a 2 way water valve, which decreases the

amount of pumps needed to push chilled water through the facility. Installed a more efficient route for our chill water distribution system for the west side. This project allowed us to remove 4 chilled water pumps to decrease our electrical usage. Added Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to 5 chilled water pumps. Removed 7 stand alone DX rooftop mounted package units and replaced the DX units with 7 high efficiency chilled water air handlers with VFDs. Added a 100% fresh air intake unit to the west side. Installed 24 VFDs for the ballrooms, which allows us to regulate the air temperature more efficiently. Conducted energy reduction study through city contract by Ameresco Training and education for all employees to reduce energy consumption. Replaced nearly 100% of all cleaning products to “green certified,” which includes: restroom hand towels, soap, and toilet paper. Purchased an environmentally friendly Tennant T5 floor scrubber throughout the building, this particular scrubber does not require cleaning chemicals.
For three decades, Leesfield & Partners has maintained an active litigation practice with emphasis on personal injury claims in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, with offices in Miami and Key West. About five years ago, the opportunity to network and expand the practice of law on Lincoln Road and South Beach became apparent as some good lawyer friends on Miami Beach began including us as co-counsel in their personal injury matters. At the same time, trial lawyers from around the country expanded their search for South Florida lawyers to assist in cases with venue in Miami Beach. Our $10.5 million settlement, in conjunction with one of Miami Beach’s most prominent law firms, made it even more apparent that the business opportunities to work with Miami Beach lawyers was growing. Of course, this also included an active membership in the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce where our firm already had a large number of friends and business associates. Partner Alexander Perkins is now an officer in the Miami Beach Bar Association which is attended regularly by all the partners in the firm at monthly meetings. On November 12, 2008, Leesfield & Partners led by Patricia Kennedy,
Mark Sylvester and Tom Scolaro, hosted the “Red Umbrella Block Party” for friends, merchants, professionals and lawyers on South Beach. Over 200 people attended our Segafredo Cafe late night dessert party which turned into an important event for lawyers in different practice areas to meet and exchange ideas in business. In 2010, our firm offices in the SunTrust Building received an added boost with a number of contacts from outside Florida and, in particular, from the United Kingdom. Miami Beach is a destination of beauty, interest and a family resort location. Our firm is very proud of its active membership in the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and the friends we have made through its pillar membership. Partner Ira Leesfield now serves on the Board of Governorss for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and has continued the firm’s involvement in all major activities and events. We are very proud of our membership in the Miami Beach Bar Association, the Miami Chamber of Commerce, and our affiliation with Miami Beach professionals, merchants and lawyers.

The planned wireless network enhancement strategy is part of AT&T’s 2010 wireline and wireless capital investment, which is expected to be in the $18 billion to $19 billion range companywide, an increase of between 5 and 10 percent over 2009. This planned amount also includes an increase of about $2 billion in capital expenditures for wireless and backhaul related to AT&T’s wireless network. This planned level of investment is framed by the expectation that regulatory and legislative decisions relating to the telecom sector will continue to be sensitive to investment. “Investment in the state’s broadband networks is critical to keeping Florida competitive and providing our citizens with the best technology, said Senate PresidentDesignate Mike Haridopolos. “Expanding and enhancing the mobile broadband network extends the benefits of broadband access to many consumers who are relying more and more on wireless technology to access the Internet. Today’s announcement builds on AT&T’s 2009 wireless investment, during which it added 65 new cell sites in Florida and upgraded nearly 250 existing sites to 3G. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s total capital investment in its Florida wireless and wireline networks was nearly $2.8 billion. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s wireless network investment in Florida was more than $550 million. “By advancing public policy that encourages companies like AT&T to invest in our state, the Florida legislature and Governor Crist are providing the leadership that will keep Florida competitive said Marshall Criser, III, AT&T president, Florida. “This
investment translates into good jobs, the tools to succeed in the global marketplace and a rising quality of life for all Floridians. Internet usage growth has brought tremendous benefits for consumers, but requires tremendous investments in infrastructure. This significant investment in infrastructure and jobs is possible due to policy that enables companies to compete and offer the innovative services that consumers are increasingly demanding. AT&T has been working with policy makers to support a national broadband plan that enables broadband adoption and ensures broadband access to every American by 2014. Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three years, largely attributed to today’s advanced smartphones that are generating dramatically increasing volumes of network traffic. In fact, roughly 40 percent of AT&T’s postpaid customer base uses a smartphone today, representing twice the number of smartphone customers than any other U.S. provider. AT&T recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation’s fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available this year and in 2011 as AT&T combines the new technology with our second initiative to dramatically increase the number of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic connections, adding capacity from cell sites to the AT&T backbone network. The backhaul upgrades are also a key step in the evolution toward next-generation LTE mobile broadband technology. AT&T is

Segafredo on Lincoln Road celebrates THE BIG 1-0 with DJ MR. V. and MISS PATTY spinning on stage and a rocking block WHAT: Segafredo L’Originale’s 10th Anniversary Block Party with DJ Mr. V. and Miss Patty
WHERE: Segafredo L’Originale, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139 WHEN: Sunday August 29, 2010 at 5pm Segafredo on Lincoln Road, also referred to as L’Originale, will be celebrating its 10th year in business as the first Segafredo branch to open in Florida, on Sunday August 29th, 2010 at 5pm with a block party, music by DJ Mr. V. and Miss Patty, and giveaways! Segafredo L’Originale has been the gathering spot for thousands of locals and tourists since its doors opened in 2000 under the ownership and management of Graziano Sbroggio and Mark Soyka. The boutique Italian cafe received a boost to its popularity with the innovative and dynamic concept brought in by Luca Voltarel, then manager, today a partner, of serving cocktails and playing great music - one of Voltarel’s true passions. The success was almost immediate and Segafredo developed a cult-like following made up of skateboarders, beach-goers, club-goers, pet-lovers and an infinite mix of extraordinary personalities from all over the world! On August 29th 2010, the block party celebration will showcase the best of what Segafredo has to offer: music, dancing, drinks and the eclectic clientele that defines South Beach. A stage will be set up on Lenox Avenue where DJ Mr. V. and Miss Patty will be spinning their best tunes with roadblocks surrounding the immediate area for the occasion. Mr. V. is known for his original productions and remixes taking a trip back in time to dance music’s golden age. His music embraces people’s differences and creates a homogeneous vibe, a perfect match to Segafredo’s loyal customers. Although the buzz is always palpable directly in front of the venue, simultaneously, Segafredo is able to offer a perfect balance with different environments such as romantic tables by the fountain or lounge chairs and sofas under the trees for drinks with friends. “To each his or her own groove,” explains Luca Voltarel, partner and manager of Segafredo. “We wanted everyone to find his or her own comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the music.” Miss Patty, joining DJ Mr. V. on stage,
will showcase her unusual vocal talent mixing tribal, free spirit and bohemian styles. Her mantra is to find sounds that speak to her from disco and funk to opera and folk, and inspire her to create her own harmony. “Miss Patty brings together the eclectic crowd we nurture and cherish at Segafredo,” compares Voltarel. With an expected attendance in the thousands, satellite bars will be strategically set up throughout the enclosed area. Activities and surprises are planned but will not be divulged. For daily updates about the 10th Anniversary, please become a fan on facebook of Segafredo L’Originale or for more information please call 305-673-0047 or visit www.sze-originale.com <http://www.sze-originale.com> Servers will request valid identification when serving alcohol. Mount Sinai Heart Institute: Your heart in the best hands For more than two decades, Mount Sinai Medical Center has been the area’s leader in the treatment of heart disease, the country’s foremost cause of death. Mount Sinai’s recent affiliation with New York’s prestigious Columbia University combined the strengths of these two leaders in cardiovascular care to create the Mount Sinai Heart Institute, further enhancing the outstanding level of care, technology and research available in our community. Mount Sinai Heart Institute performs more of the most advanced minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgeries than any other hospital in the county; and it has the best survival rates in the state for complex, large-volume cases, according to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. Joseph Lamelas, M.D., an internationally renowned pioneer in minimally invasive valve surgery, leads the heart institute’s toprated cardiothoracic surgery team, which attracts patients from around the world. Dr. Lamelas has performed more than 8,000 cardiac surgeries, of which more than 1,200 are minimally invasive, making him the most experienced cardiac surgeon in minimally invasive valve repair in the region. Unlike open-heart procedures, minimally invasive surgery requires a very small incision, thus patients experience: • Reduced pain and trauma • Less blood loss • Lower risk of infection • Shorter hospital stay • Quicker recuperation and return to normal lifestyle • Minimal scarring • Reduced risk factors in future operations Patients with very poor heart function, older people, obese patients and those who require redo operations, especially for aortic and

Bad Check Restitution Program aids local merchants BY KATHERINE FERNANDEZ RUNDLE
Miami-Dade State Attorney As your State Attorney, I know the negative impact bad checks can have on local businesses. Millions of dollars are lost to merchants every year as a result of this ongoing problem. Bad checks affect everyone in terms of higher consumer costs that must be passed on to offset losses, and increased taxes to cover the additional costs for law enforcement and prosecution. In an effort to combat this serious problem, I created the Bad Check Restitution Program to assist our local merchants with bad check losses. The primary goal of the program is to obtain full restitution for the victim without adding to the financial burden of the criminal justice system. First-time bad check offenders are given the opportunity to avoid criminal prosecution by attending a mandatory eight-hour intervention class, in addition to paying restitution. All of this is accomplished without any cost to the taxpayers. Merchants’ interest and participation in this special program will benefit all lawabiding citizens and help businesses improve their bottom line. CUTTING YOUR LOSSES • Make personal contact with the check writer. If you are unsuccessful, send a statutory notice. The check writer has seven days to respond and remit payment. • If you do not hear from the check writer or receive payment, simply contact the Bad Check Restitution Program at 800832-1853 for a crime report.
LAW • Fill out the crime report, attach originals (you retain photocopies) of all checks and notification documents such as return receipts and bank notices, and mail to: Miami-Dade County State Attorney Bad Check Restitution Program P.O. Box 350160, Miami, FL 331350160. If you do not receive restitution within 60 days, contact the Miami-Dade County State Attorney Bad Check Restitution Program. CHECK ACCEPTANCE TIPS • Institute a check acceptance policy. A clearly posted check acceptance policy for your employees and customers can go a long way toward reducing your losses. • Accept checks written only with the current date. Post dated checks are civil matters and are not accepted in The Miami-Dade County State Attorney Bad Check Restitution Program. • Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem right, ask questions or ask for another form of payment. You are not obligated to accept a check. For more information, call 800-8321853 or go to <www.miamisao.com>. Katherine Fernandez Rundle has been the Miami-Dade State Attorney for 15 years and is a pioneer in the creation of innovative programs to help prevent crime and provide rehabilitative opportunities to eligible offenders. FWC REPORT FWC cracks down on illegal Internet sales BY RODNEY BARRETO Chairman, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission In our technologicallyadvanced society, we have a lot of advantages and conveniences. Unfortunately, technological advancements can also provide an avenue for law violators. Online businesses that deal in wildlife trade are an increasing concern for Florida’s law enforcement agencies. With merely a laptop, garage and mailbox, anyone can open a business dealing in Florida’s wildlife. These businesses could be exchanging dangerous species, such as conditional snakes and lizards, or venomous reptiles, which are a serious public-safety concern. Also, if released into the wild, these nonnative species can pose a threat to indigenous wildlife. The Internet needs to be monitored to protect Florida’s natural resources from exploitation. Fortunately, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is aware of this issue and has an effective tool on its side — the Internet Crimes Unit. The unit, a part of the FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement, is experiencing tremendous success. In the past six months, seven hardworking undercover officers have made 151 arrests and issued 51 warnings through covert Internet operations. This technique is
one of the latest evolving technologies to combat illegal captive wildlife sales. Legitimate businesses that follow FWC captive wildlife regulations are safe for the public and the environment. However, the FWC has uncovered many illegal businesses throughout the state. The presence of these illegal businesses undermines legitimate companies. Legal wildlife trade businesses obtain the appropriate permits from the FWC and operate safely, and these businesses are the ones with the right to operate in this state. The Internet Crimes Unit uses investigative measures that supplement our traditional faceto-face efforts. These online methods are effective in enhancing public safety, continuing conservation efforts, combating invasive species and ensuring fair business practices. One case in Central Florida has even led to investigations in six other states. The case involves a particularly large illegal import/export business that was shut down last year. FWC investigators are continuing to examine it, and six people have been charged with 121 criminal violations so far. The FWC remains active in its conservation efforts. Its Division of Law Enforcement is not only able to react to conservation issues, but, through efforts like the Internet Crimes Unit, it is protecting Florida’s future by pursuing proactive measures. The Internet Crimes Unit is actively working to protect our state by tracking down Internet crimes at their source. You can help the FWC in its conservation endeavors. To report wildlife law violations, visit <MyFWC.com/law/alert> or call 888-404-3922.
