Miami Gardens The Legacy Continues at Norland Middle School Performing Arts Magnet BY JANEY TATE On March 4, Tanisha Cidel sat at her desk while observing her magnet students’ Power Point presentations on theater production. She invited me in to see some of their work. Their presentations were detailed and organized as if they were presenting to a major production studio. I was impressed with the students’ behavior and talent. It was evident that Cidel’s passion and love for what she teaches shined through her students, who last month won the Florida State Thespian Competition—a prestigious theater competition that the Center for Arts at Norland Middle Schoolhas been winning since Sidel was a student in the program herself. Cidel, Linda Draesal- Atkinson and Lyndsey Battiste areformer students of Norland Middle, Draesal is the Visual Arts instructor and Battiste is a volunteer dance instructor, and understood the importance of coming back to the place where they were given the roots to succeed. They along with Zafere White, the music instructor, believe that preserving the legacy of the magnet program is the key to its success.
“We bring a shine of pride,” said Cidel. The award winning magnet program is like no other in the state of Florida, having won countless awards and recognition; the program stresses the importance of developing a scholar first and a performer and artist/performer second. Maribel Trujillo, the lead teacher and dance instructor for the magnet program, explained that the magnet students maintain a competitive level against the district and state
reports on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The students must maintain a “C” average in academics and a “B” average in conduct. “I’m grooming a whole person not just a dancer,” said Trujillo in reference to the importance of the requirements.

Every year “Jazz in the Gardens” is proud to give emerging and local artists an oppor-
tuntiy to share the stage with super-star performers in an effort to celebrate up and coming talent that show incredible promise on the way to their own stardom. Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson comments “The City of Miami Gardens and “Jazz in the Gardens” believes that “if we can’t do it first class, we don’t do it at all”. With that said, we know our four emerging artists are “first class” additions to an already stellar line up. Sometimes the next star in music is single performance away from achieving their dreams, and we hope that “Jazz in the Gardens” will be that break”. Jazz in the Gardens, a two-day weekend festival is now in its sixth year and has grown
to be one of the top cultural events in America. The jazz festival delivers a diverse mix of music genres that range from jazz, R&B, Caribbean and African sounds. Trujillo credits the school’s principal, Eugene Butler Jr, for some of thesuccess of the magnet program because she says he goes over and beyond to make sure the students have what they need to be proficient artists. Cidel explained how Butler tries to make all of the performances and appearances the students have and how he personally reached out to donors to assist in the magnet program’sannual trip to New York City—a trip taken by the Center for the Arts every year to give students real world experience and exposure to the art world. The Center for Performing Arts at Norland Middle Schools roots run deep, having been around for over 20 years. They have seen some of the brightest and most talented students to come through their magnet program. Some of Norland Middle School students have gone onto Dr. Michael M. Krop Magnet’s program, Miami Northwestern Senior High School’s PAVAC program, Design Architecture Senior High (DASH), and the prestigious New World School of the Arts.Former students have also gone on to work with the Alvin Alley Dance Company, Nike, Inc. and Final Fantasy, a role playing video game. Current students have goals and ambitions to continue the greatness their predecessors have set before them and even create their own path to add to the magnet program’s legacy. Ashley Leon, 13, is an eighth grader at
Norland Middle and is a Visual design student. She has won many awards, such as the Fairchild Special Merit award, and has her work displayed across South Florida and even in the Dade County School Board Building. Eric Quinn, 14, is another eighth grader who is a Theater student. In addition to his involvement with the magnet program he is also in the after school program at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, located in Liberty City. Because of his talents, he was chosen to audition for the new ABC Family network’s sitcom “MC Antenna” and received the co-star role on the show. Mira Meyers, 13, is a dance student, who has been making all A1A’s since elementary. The eighth grader started dancing at 3 years old and has a love for the Jazz style of dancing. She credits the program with building her self-confidence and giving her a greater appreciation for the art of dancing. In the future, Meyers plans to open her own affordable dance studio for children in the community and even plans to give back to Norland Middle School’s magnet program. “I would help out with auditions…anything to offer my help. I have learned a lot from this school and I want to show my gratitude towards it,” said Meyers. For more details on the magnet program, visit DadeSchools.net or call Maribel Trujillo at (305)-653- 1210.

IRS Holds Saturday Open Houses on March 26 to Help Taxpayers IR-2011-19, Feb. 23, 2011 WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that nearly 100 IRS offices will be open on Saturday, March 26, to help taxpayers. The location of participating offices is listed on IRS.gov. “We are opening our doors on these Saturdays to help taxpayers who may not have a chance to seek assistance during the work week,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “If taxpayers need help preparing their tax returns or have an account question, we encourage them to visit one of our open houses.” On Saturday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, March 26, the IRS offices will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time. IRS staff will be on site to help taxpayers work through issues. More than 35,000 taxpayers attended similar events last year resolving over 95 percent of their issues. During the open-house hours, IRS personnel will be available to provide services
such as tax return preparation, assist with account questions and help with a variety of other issues. IRS offices in 10 locations will also offer free seminars designed to provide information on new tax laws affecting federal tax returns and detail other services provided by the IRS. In addition to IRS help, community organizations partner with the IRS. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs assist people who earned $49,000 or less, and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs assist individuals age 60 and over with their 2010 income tax return preparation and electronic filing. Many of these sites have Saturday hours while others offer assistance at various times during the week. Taxpayers can call 800-906-9887 to locate partner sites in their area. In addition to the open houses on Saturday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, March 26, the IRS expects to open many of its offices on two additional Saturdays later this year.

Miami Gardens wins Award for its ‘Urban Forest’ BY JANEY TATE Driving along Miami Gardens Drive one can see the luxurious Palm trees and lush green grass that allows for a serene view and the hard work put into making Miami Gardens this beautiful was not done in vain. During the City Council meeting, Joe Sulak-- a Florida Urban Forestry Council Board Member-- presented the City of Miami Gardens the award for Outstanding Urban Forestry Program. This award is given to communities that preserve and maintain their urban forest. Present at the January 26 meeting to receive the award was Tom Ruiz, Public Works Director; Tsahai Codner, Keep Miami Gardens Beautiful (KMGB) Program Director, and other employees from those departments. As Program Director of Keep Miami Gardens Beautiful,Codnerfelt that the City of Miami Gardens was making great progress in their Urban Forestry initiatives, and the City Council, management team and tree crews should be recognized for their hard work and dedication to improving the landscape of the city.Codner along with Claudelle Joseph and Mike Gambino, who also work with the Keep Miami Gardens Beautiful division, helped to apply for the award. Codner says that they all were elated and extremely honored when they heard the good news. The Florida Urban Forestry Council—a council that promotes sound urban forestry policies and practices by educating citizens and communities throughout the state of Fla-- gives out various awards each year to individuals, cities, schools, and organizations that maintain their urban forest. An urban forest is the careful maintenance of
trees and plants in an urban environment for the improvement of that area. “Joe Sulak said the item that made our application stand out the most was our commitment to maintenance” Codner explained. There has been much work that has gone into the maintenance of the forestry around Miami Gardens and Codner says they are thankful the Florida Urban Forestry Council recognized them for that.To maintain its urban forest, the Miami Gardens has initiated continuous tree planting of native plants throughout the city. They have educating their residents on the importance of creating and maintaining a healthy urban forest and they have regular tree pruning, along with removal of invasive trees which are replaced with a more diverse trees. The Public Works Departments and the Keep Miami Gardens Beautiful Division continually train staff on the best tree care practices. Codner credits Mayor Shirley Gibson and the Public Works Director, Ruiz, for their headship and backing of the program. “Mayor Gibson is always supportive of the city’s tree canopy program. She not only talks about supporting greening our city but she shows it by making sure our tree program is well funded.” “I would also like to add that our tree program has made such strides because of the leadership and support of our Public Works Director, Tom Ruiz.” According to Codner, in additionto winning the Outstanding Urban Forestry Program award, MiamiGardens was recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City” community for the 6th year in a row and received the “Growth Award” for the 2nd year in a row.

Mayors’ Workshop Boasts Small Business Entries BY ANTRANETTE PIERRE Economic Development Manager More than 100 people showed up Wednesday, March 2nd to listen to Mayor Shirley Gibson speak about the economic opportunities available to small businesses. Held at the new Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex at 3000 NW 199 Street, representatives from County and City staff addressed business owners about various programs offering financial and technical assistance. Information was plentiful and entrepreneurs were numerous asking questions about becoming a registered vendor, upcoming construction contracts, loan programs and bonding assistance programs. Besides Miami Gardens, Human Services Coalition, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, South Florida Urban Ministries (ASSETS Small Business Program), South Florida Workforce, ACCION USA, Partners for Self Employment, and U.S. Department of Transportation were all in attendance.
Ly Espinol
Miami Dade County’s Director of Small Business Development spoke its advocacy for local and small businesses in providing certification assistance and help with payment retrievals from the County. Pam Thompson, Miami Gardens’ Procurement Manager informed businesses on the City’s local vendor preference which provides additional opportunities to vendors whose business is located in Miami Gardens. Several businesses exchanged business cards and greeted one another. The Mayors’ Small Business Development Workshop is part of an ongoing series of entrepreneurial clinics for local businesses—strategically stationed around the county. It is the brainchild of Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez. Several upcoming events were also announced such as the Greater Miami Gardens Chamber of Commerce PreLaunch Event on March 30th at Ducati Miami, 2001 NW 167 Street, starting at 5:30pm.

3/31/11— WALK-IN TO SAVE PUBLIC EDUCATION President, United Teachers of Dade
On Thursday, March 31, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., I am asking each one of you reading this to go to any public school close to you, and show your support for public education by WALKING IN to a school. On this day, United Teachers of Dade, in cooperation with community organizations, parents, and many public sector employees including nurses, firefighters, police, transit workers and others will come out to our public schools to protect our children and the schools that serve them. We need you to join us. Thousands of citizens must stand up against the cuts to education funding that will leave children without the education they need for their future. Last year, two brave mothers staged a hunger strike because of the cuts their children faced in critical education programming. Unions often come under media fire for supposedly planning workplace walk outs, which we do not condone in any way. Instead, we want our entire community to stand with us as we WALK IN to schools to stand up for Public Education. Right now is a critical time. Our schools, our teachers and support
staff, and our children are in danger from legislation that cuts funding to our classrooms and places money in the hands of profiteers. It is urgent that we act together to demonstrate public outrage at what is occurring in Tallahassee. The Florida legislature is withdrawing billions of dollars of funding from public education and weakening the economic power of working Floridians. They are wasting money on programs known to be failures such as pay for performance models they are currently legislating. For example: • $215 million reduction to Miami-Dade Public Schools funding alone. • No funding provided to districts for a pay-for-performance model. • $2 billion wasted on creating more tests, not for the benefit of students. • Children placed in larger classes. • Children placed in virtual classes without a classroom teacher or interaction with other students. • Experienced and successful teachers fired for no reason at end of year. The Governor of Florida and other states have said they can’t afford to educate America’s children. How is it that the most prosperous, democratic country in the world would fail to educate her children? How dare this governor and legislators say they will not pay for public education! Walk in with us to our public schools on 3-31-11 to show our governor and lawmakers that the people will not tolerate these threats to our right to a public education system. $!* () % ( &( ) $*) * () $ ) %%" )+&&%(* & ()%$$ " !$ +$!%$ !) %##!** *% !$ " ( !$ ( *!$ &+ "! ) %%" ( %(# %)* (!$ '+ "!*&+ "! + *!%$ %( "" )*+ $*) $ " , *!$ * &(% ))!%$ " )* *+) % * () & ( &(% ))!%$ ") % ! #&"%- ) $ "" ) %%" )+&&%(* & ()%$$ "
