Miami Gardens’ New Mayor Takes Office t the August 14, 2012 General Election for the City of Miami Gardens, the voters overwhelmingly elected Oliver Gilbert to serve as their Mayor for the next four (4) years. Gilbert is no novice to public office; originally appointed in 2006, by then Mayor Shirley Gibson, Gilbert served an unexpired term in At-Large Seat Six until August 2008. In 2008, he qualified for At-Large Seat Six, and was resoundingly elected by the voters. That term ended 2010, and again Gilbert qualified and ran for re-election to At-Large Seat Six. In 2011, Gilbert announced his candidacy for Mayor of the City of Miami Gardens. Out of a field of eight candidates, Gilbert emerged as a strong frontrunner, a position he maintained throughout the campaign. Gilbert the second Miami Gardens Mayor was sworn into office, August 21, 2012. Gilbert is a lifelong resident of the City that is now Miami Gardens, the third-largest municipality in Miami-Dade County. Ultimately, Gilbert said he would like to build a Miami Gardens that would attract outsiders and locals to spend their recreational dollars inside the City. His goal is to build a community that is safe, that is economically viable and kid friendly. Mr. Gilbert’s first position after graduating from the University of Miami Law School, with honors in 2000, was as the legislative assistant to State Representative Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall. He has also served as an Assistant State Attorney in Broward County.
A
Mayor Gilbert currently serves as Chairman of the Miami Dade County Local Black Elected Officials and on the Executive Committee of the Miami Dade County League of Cities. Additionally, he is a member of North County Citizen’s Association; Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University National Alumni Association; the Sigma Alpha Chapter of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; and Miami Fellows –Class V. He graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School; Florida A & M University. Oliver is the proud father of a five year old son, Oliver IV. Gilbert is currently of Counsel with the law firm of Greenspoon Marder.

COMMUNITY SECTION City partners with Miami Job Corps and Skansa USA Building, Inc. for citywide Employment Showcase
Skanska USA Building Inc. was proud to partner with Miami Job Corps and the City of Miami Gardens for the Showcase Job Fair held on July 25. This event highlighted the skilled and talented graduates of the Miami Job Corps with the goal of matching them with viable employment opportunities on the new City of Miami Gardens Municipal Complex Project. This state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum project is a great opportunity to make an economic impact in the community through job creation. Skanska is committed to optimizing employment opportunities in partnership with Miami Jobs Corps and the City of Miami Gardens. By helping to identify and facilitate contracting and employment opportunities for local residents/businesses, Skanska is doing their part in helping to stimulate the local economy. Since Skanska does not self perform the majority of work, job opportunities are primarily driven by trade subcontractors. The event was meant to facilitate and connect trade subcontractors with viable, skilled labor for the community. Eleven subcontractors participated as “exhibitors” in the event. Trades represented included plumbing, electrical, structural steel, drywall, painting, carpentry, and concrete. Over 40 job corps trainees participated, including 20-year-old Alatra Jones, who decided to join Miami Job Corps program because she was on a destructive path. Alatra was raised by her mother and grandmother in Overtown along with her younger sister and brother. At the
age of 16, Alatra was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue and it moved to her throat. Upon overcoming that situation, she experienced a short period of being homeless and living on the streets.
Despite these challenges, Alatra had all the internal tools within herself to be successful. She was a smart student at Booker T. Washington High; however, her time in the hospital fighting cancer caused her to fall behind in school leaving her unable to catch up in her studies. Alatra dropped out of high school despite having all the credits needed graduate. Alatra states one of the smartest decisions made she could make was enrolling into the Miami Job Corps program. Upon entering the program she has become a positive, mature, focus, and dedicated person. Within three months, she completed the requirements to earn a high school diploma through the Dade County Public School System. She is currently studying Painting. Her ultimate goal is to enlist into the Air Force. Alatra states her greatest strength is “the fear of failing”. Upon completing the Job Corps program and the City Hall project, she wants to move to Pittsburgh, PA to continue learning new experiences and take advantage of all life has to offer. Some of those in attendance at the job fair included Mayor Oliver Gilbert, ViceMayor Lisa Davis, Councilwoman Felicia Robinson; Miami Job Corps Director Willie Brown; Skanska USA’s Russ Sheppard and Nicole Heran; and Skanska partners Foster Construction, Garth Solutions Inc., and IMR Development. “The event was a wonderful example of what can happen when the City of Miami Gardens does business with companies that understand the importance of utilizing local human resources whenever possible states Gilbert.” The Construction of Miami Gardens’ Municipal Complex will have an extraordinary economic impact on the City Miami Gardens commercial portrait and it is great that Miami Gardeners will benefit.”

COMMUNITY SECTION Reopening Ceremony of NW 42nd Avenue Bridge
The NW 42 Avenue Bridge is finally completed and was opened for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians on July 30, 2012, with a bridge opening ceremony by the Honorable Mayor Shirley Gibson. Originally built in 1957, the bridge was not designed with pedestrian and bicycle access, nor did it meet today’s code with the American Disability Act (ADA). Also of concern was the existing profile of the old bridge. With a huge hump in the street, it blocked visibility from the roadway, creating a crossing pedestrian hazard; one which has now been corrected. In addition, the final inspection performed by the State was conducted on November 30, 2009, and rated the bridge, “FUNCTIONALLY ABSOLETE” according to the National Bridge Inventory. The crash reports available from Miami-Dade County and Miami Gardens Police Department were analyzed. The City knew that in order to address all safety issues, replacement of the bridge was the only solution. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provided part funding for the bridge projects with Transportation Funding for the remaining portion. The NW 42 Avenue/NW 179 Street Bridge was
replaced for a total amount of $1,108,120, of which $837,300 from ARRA funding and $270,820 from City’s transportation funds. The bridge construction began in April 2010. In close proximity to Carol City Elementary School, the new bridge has created a safe and accessible crossing for students, parents, and residents. The new bridge includes a 6’ ft wide sidewalk on the west side of bridge and a 10’ ft wide shared-use by pedes-

trians and bicyclists on east side of bridge. The bridge also has new realigned roadway, drainage, markings, signage, new guardrails/concrete barriers and slope erosion protection. All new bridge components adhere to current Florida Department of Transportation design standards. Finally, the City would like to thank the community for the support and for being patient during the construction where the pedestrian crossing remained opened throughout the bridge construction.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 241,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States this year, and more than 28,000 men will die of the disease. With these startling statistics, it is important for men and their families to be aware of the disease, understand who is most at risk and what they can do today to lower their chances of battling prostate cancer. What is prostate cancer? Prostate cancer refers to abnormal cells in the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate is situated just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. A normal prostate is about the size of a walnut. Who is at risk for prostate cancer? Prostate cancer can affect men of any age but it is most common in men over the age of 50. Eight out of 10 men who suffer from prostate cancer are over the age of 65. African-American men are at higher risk as well as men with a family history of the disease. Men who eat a high-fat diet or who are obese also may have increased chances of getting prostate cancer. What can be done to lower the risk of getting the disease? While researchers continue to study the effect of diet and other lifestyle factors on a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer, there are some changes that may be associated with a decreased risk of the disease. Men are encouraged to eat a diet low in fat, especially animal fat, and include more fruits and vegetables. According to the National Cancer Institute, studies show that a diet high in dairy products and calcium also may be linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer, although the increase may be small. What are the symptoms of prostate cancer? In most cases, early stage prostate cancer does not produce any symptoms, but they may begin to appear as the cancer grows. Symptoms include: Difficulty starting to urinate;
Less force to the stream of urine; Frequent urination, especially during the night; Pain while urinating; Blood or pus in the urine; Pain in hip, lower back or lower part of the pelvis, and Unintended weight loss and/or loss of appetite. What types of options are available to treat prostate cancer? Prostate cancer can be treated successfully if it is caught early, before it spreads to other parts of the body. One treatment option for patients at Jackson South Community Hospital is the daVinci S Robotic Surgical System, which allows the surgeon to perform minimally invasive procedures, such as removal of the prostate, in hard-to-reach areas with more precision. Because this technology is less invasive than other surgical options, patients experience minimal pain, less blood loss and a smaller risk of infection. Patients undergoing this procedure can expect an excellent chance of being cured with a return to normal activities within days. In some cases, the surgery may be an outpatient procedure. In the majority of cases, patients are not troubled with incontinence or impotence. How can men learn more about prostate cancer and the various treatment options? The Urology Center of Excellence at Jackson South Hospital is a resource for state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and treatment for prostate and other urologic problems. We’re always innovating and on the leading edge of developing the latest techniques for beating cancer, improving urinary function and restoring sexual function. For more information or to schedule an appointment call the Urology Center of Excellence at Jackson South at 305-5472364 or visit the Jackson Health System website at <www.jhsmiami.org>. Sanjay Razdan, MD, MCh, is the director of Jackson South Hospital’s Urology Center of Excellence. Dr. Razdan, who is well known for his expertise in advanced surgical procedures in endourology and urologic cancer, was one of the first urologists in Miami-Dade County to perform radical prostatectomy procedures with the daVinci S robotic Surgical System.

2013 Nissan 370Z Coupe is fast and fun to drive Grant Miller Car Corner The 2013Nissan 370Z is a brilliant sports car. The 3.7 liter engine produces a unique sound and enables it to accelerate from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. What I am trying to say is that this is one fast car and an enjoyable one to drive, especially with the six-speed manual transmission. The 370Z Coupe has a fresh look for 2013 with the addition of a revised front fascia with vertical LED daytime running lights, a red reflector added to the rear fascia and new wheels – 18-inch aluminumalloy wheels for the 370Z and 370Z Touring and revised 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels for models equipped with the Sport Package. Other 2013 enhancements include red brake calipers and Euro-tuned sport shock absorbers on Sport Packageequipped models; a new dark-finish fuel gauge trim and two new exterior colors – Magma Red and Midnight Blue. The iconic 370Z Coupe continues as one
of the most dynamic sports cars available in the U.S. It’s also one of the best performance values with the standard 332-hp 3.7liter DOHC V-6 engine and choice of sixspeed manual transmission or seven-speed automatic. It continues to be available in three models – Coupe, Coupe Touring and the NISMO 370Z with unique performance and design attributes. There is also a convertible roadster version available. The 2013 370Z Coupe has a light, highly rigid structure for enhanced performance. The taut exterior design incorporates styling cues from the original 240Z to help give it a sleek aerodynamic shape, a “dynamic motion” feel with a dramatic cantilevered roof and a “low visual center of gravity.” The 370Z Coupe rides on an FM platform and has a classic sports car look and feel. It has a well-proportioned body with a 100.4inch wheelbase and 167.2-inch overall length. The body has aluminum door panels, an all-aluminum hood and an aluminum hatch. A front suspension cradle, rear structural reinforcements and an underbody “Vbar” help reduce front and rear lateral bending. The design also uses a carbon fiber composite radiator housing and strengthened rear fender and hatch areas. The sleek silhouette is defined by

upswept quarter windows, a design cue that is echoed by the upward curve in the lower rocker panel and the taut sheet metal molding around the wheels and frame. Performance body pieces are available as part of the optional Sport Package, including a front chin spoiler and rear spoiler. The interior of the 370Z Coupe continues the traditional two-seat layout built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the
driver and passenger’s seat. The design focus incorporates a “layer concept,” with an information layer, an operation layer and a holding layer. Pricing on the 2013 Nissan 270Z starts at $33,120.
