he Arenas family of Palmetto Bay not only has found a game they enjoy playing together, the two youngest members, Andres, 11, and Juan Pablos, 9, are so good at it that they were among the top finishers at the national competition and have secured a place in the international finals. Both boys participated in the 2010 Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) National Championship in Indianapolis, IN, June 2527, competing against 1,337 of the nation’s top Pokémon TCG players, and finished among the Top 32. They previously had won competitions at the city, state and regional levels. Roberto Arenas remembers how his sons began playing with the Pokémon cards just on their own, without knowing the rules of the game. That soon changed, for all of them. “Three years ago they started reading the manual and learning the rules,” Roberto said. “After that we starting going to the league and I read a book on it so I could answer their questions. We started going to the tournaments and at the end of the first year Andres was the Florida Regional Champion. They picked it up real well and started to love the game a lot, so we took them to the tournaments outside the state, and Juan Pablos became a regional champion as well.”
