Mangowood celebrates an old-fashioned Fourth BY GARY ALAN RUSE
Share your fuzzy friends’ photographs with others
esidents of the Palmetto Bay community of Mangowood were joined by village officials on July 4 for a formal flag-raising ceremony, speeches and other special events. Attending the ceremonies in Mangowood, which has some 450 homes, were Mayor Eugene P. Flinn Jr., Vice Mayor Brian Pariser, Councilmembers Howard Tendrich and Shelley Stanczyk. Each said a few words about how far Palmetto Bay has come in its few years of existence. Mayor Flinn spoke about the resolution of the mitigation issue and said that will help Palmetto Bay avoid the budget problems with which most other municipalities currently are dealing. Emcee for the event was Stanley Kowlessar, president of the Mangowood Association and sponsor of the event.

M-Dade Fire Rescue captures World Emergency Response Championship BY ALEJANDRA CASTRO NUÑEZ Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s (MDFR) Advanced Life Support (ALS) Team is the winner of the 2009 Bill Shearer International Advanced Life Support Competition. The championship event took place at the recent national Clinical Conference, better known as ClinCon, in Orlando. MDFR’s ALS Team — which consists of Captain Greg Logue, Captain Eddy Trapero, Firefighter Alex Lozano — beat 37 other fire-rescue teams from around the world during the first rounds of emergency medical response (EMS) scenarios. MDFR’s team quickly advanced to the finals on Thursday, July 2, where they took first place, making them the 2009 World ALS Champions. “This victory is a distinguished accomplishment and a living testimony of our continuous dedication to EMS and public safety,” said Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo. The Palmetto Bay American Legion Post handled the flag-raising ceremony, which was followed by Palmetto Bay resident Gunther Karger playing America the Beautiful on the harmonica. Karger is a former president of the Country Club Grove Civic Association and a Holocaust survivor. “Shirley and I have lived in this area now known as Palmetto Bay for 41 years and are proud to have been part of its evolution into an independent municipality,” Karger said. “Remembering the day my grandfather took me to hear Adolph Hitler speak in Berlin in 1939 and being shuttled between foster homes to orphanages, I never imagined the possibility of being here in Palmetto Bay today, at the Mangowood flagpole playing God Bless America on the harmonica in a free country.” Karger said that it gives special meaning to someone like him to participate in America’s Independence Day nearly 70 years after his entire family was killed just because of whom they were. “I urge political parties and all Americans to set aside differences to pull together and make sure we regain our direction and continue being a beacon for all the world to see and follow,” Karger said.
George Tabor, a Mangowood board member, conducted the “Honor the Veteran” ceremony, which included reading the names of residents whose names are on the bricks surrounding the new Flag Pole and who contributed to the Mangowood Memorial at the entrance of the enclosed community. Gunther Karger concluded the program by playing God Bless America just before four Air Force F-16s flew in formation overhead, one of which was piloted by a Mangowood resident. Mayor Flinn commented on the significance of the local ceremony. “The Mangowood celebration is one of several traditional community events held throughout the village on Independence Day,” he said. “It reflects our community, residents getting together to celebrate in their own way. No government can be all things to all people. “I am pleased that there are different events within the village — ceremonies, barbecues, neighborhood bicycle parades, and individual family gettogethers. All are outstanding events and representative of our active community.” Flinn said that many of these neighbors met later in the evening at Black Point Marina in Cutler Bay for the cooperative fireworks display put on by the Perrine Baseball and Softball Association. Palmetto Bay was one of the primary cosponsors of this event.

Those who voted chose to end mitigation Michael Miller EXECUTIVE EDITOR
AROUND TOWN Those who participated in the recent mail-in special election voted overwhelmingly to end mitigation payments to the county. It was pretty much a done deal anyway but the wording in the village charter had to be removed to make it official. Well, it is official now. Out of 16,378 registered voters in the Village of Palmetto Bay, 4,827 of them sent in their ballots (a little less than 30 percent, which is not bad, I guess, but what’s the excuse of the other 70 percent for not voting?). Anyway, 93.63 percent voted YES for question #1 in favor of removing any mention of mitigation in the Village Charter. Of those voting, 4035 said YES to stop paying for specialized police services (a duplicate cost, basically), with only 649 voters saying NO.
The items on private school expansion and removing election run-off dates from the charter also passed. There they were on SW 73 Street, near the First National Bank of South Miami, running from one end to the other of the course, and at each end there was a different exercise. Like push-ups, or perhaps that is singular, on one end and lifting a bar on the other, and then they run back to the other side and repeat the process. Not sure what part of the routine I saw, but there were still smiles on just about everyone’s face. That is except for the one guy who was standing there slightly bent over with his hands on his waist, catching his breath. And then I thought I heard someone yelling at him, ‘If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.’ It so reminded me of back when…. What do hospital emergency rooms really cost? R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Last week I told you about my visit to a local hospital emergency room in hope of finding out why I couldn’t stop coughing. I told you that the charge for the visit was a little over $9,000. I wrote that from memory. The actual charge was $10,158. My co-payment was $50, so at first I figured “that’s okay, Medicare and my Medicare supplement will pay the difference.” Then I started thinking about costs, wondering just how much it would cost if I was really sick and was confined for a week’s stay in the hospital. Then I started to think what would happen if I were under 65 and didn’t have any form of medical insurance? How would I ever pay the bill? $10,158 for six hours – what would a week’s confinement cost? I got on the telephone and called my Medicare supplement provider. I wanted to verify the hospital charge for my emergency room visit for bronchitis.
AUGUST 31, 2009
My supplement provider confirmed $10,158. “Of course we don’t pay the full amount of the billing.” I asked how much they will pay. “$2,603,” was the answer. “Does that mean that I owe the difference?” They told me that the claim computation statement I will receive will designate the difference as “excluded costs.” I was told that was a synonym for charge off. It’s just a charge the hospital calculates hoping that someone might pay the full bill. I pulled an old statement from my Medicare supplement company and found on their breakdown the words “excluded costs.” This is the charge the guy on the telephone said was a charge off for the hospital. Yet, reading further in their statement I found a sweat-producing statement elaborating on the term “excluded costs.” It reads in effect you (that’s me) might be responsible for paying the excluded costs. That’s scary! I asked myself what would happen to a guy, without medical insurance, if he received a similar bill for services in the amount of $10,158?
––– VIEWPOINT ––– Could he be expected to pay the $10,158? My next call was to an attorney friend of mine who is familiar with medical billings. I asked him about the hypothetical guy without medical insurance and a bill for $10,158 for services rendered in an emergency room. The attorney’s answer was simple. “Did he sign a statement at the time of admission to the emergency room that he would be responsible for charges? I’ll bet he did. And, if he did, he could be held responsible.” I can hear the rebuttal argument. “Okay, if the guy didn’t have insurance he could always look at it by saying “the money I saved on insurance premiums will now be spent on the emergency room bill.” Good argument, but what if the hospital bill was $50,000 or $100,000? I wish I had asked the guy from the
AUGUST 31, 2009
Medicare supplement company how private insurance carriers would treat such a bill? I still don’t know the answer to that question. The billing questions arising from a simple visit to an emergency room are mind boggling. And, I am not saying that the hospital is wrong. When I hear the cost of medical testing equipment and the short time to amortize that cost, the hospital might be right. I don’t envy our President and Congress in trying to figure out how to provide coverage for all of us without our nation going broke.

Fighting foreclosure: Zo, Dwyane to the rescue
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY If you’re at risk for losing your home because you can’t keep up with all your bills, there is affordable help. That’s the message that Miami Heat superstars Dwyane Wade and Alonzo Mourning hit the road with Thursday. “We all know about the tough economic times and people losing their homes; we want to lend our names to help the cause,” Wade said. They brought their “Bringing Hope Home Motorcade” to Miami Gardens resident, Flora Johnson. She faced losing her home when she could no longer keep up with her near $1,700 monthly mortgage payment. She paid a local community group just $12 to negotiate temporary monthly payments down to about $900 a month. In order to request a permanent reduction, she must remain current for three months. Johnson smiled as she added, “Through Neighborhood Services, I just paid $12 to have them help me renego-
tiate a lower rate. Other businesses charge hundreds or more for the same thing. I got my loan reduced almost by half.” The group also warned about the growing scams that charge local residents hundreds of dollars to keep their homes, when residents can receive aid almost for free. While Flora Johnson is happy to get her loan payments reduced, she was almost speechless when she was tagteamed by the Miami Heat for an afternoon she will never forget. “Mr. Alonzo Mourning and Mr. Dwyane Wade in my neighborhood, visiting me and my family — it’s amazing.” While volunteer groups are helping families keep their homes, it is important for families to never sign any paperwork without first having it checked out by their local bank, financial advisor or close friend. CALL ABOUT OUR SUMMER CAMP PIZZA PARTY SPECIAL!
Recession summer is upon us. Instead of looking for a break from work, many are looking for work. Instead of wishing to get away from home, many are wishing to stay in a home. Whether wealthy, middle class, or poor, adults are worried. And when adults are worried, intentionally or not, they broadcast a signal of alarm that echoes in their children. Many parents do not pick up on their children’s distress signals because they are too deafened by their own. It is in such times that schools serve as more than a place for learning. Schools become an anchor in a community, a place of refuge for children and their families. When difficult economic choices must be made, many children in private schools return to public schools. When money is tight, children eat their breakfasts and lunches in school. In school, children can rely on routine, orderliness, and a place of stability when their own home environment may be in flux. A child knows what to expect from day to day in school. Now that summer is here and school is out, many parents face difficult choices about what to do with their children. Because both school and social service budgets are slashed, many spaces in summer school programs and camps have been lost, so parents cobble together as best they can a way to have their children watched. Sometimes it is television that is the watcher as children far too young sit inside behind locked doors. Many parents are already counting the days until our schools reopen.
Their reasons might be selfish, but their need is real. When the school doors reopen, our children will return. What will they face upon that return? Our school board has the basis to ensure our students return to schools that have the resources to welcome them. In tough times, it is more important than ever that our students have the resources they need. They need the books and art supplies, the paper and musical instruments, the baseballs and basketballs and footballs that are part
In recession summer, school board members can provide stability to the lives of children. They can do the job they were elected to do. of their school day. They need the soap and the toilet paper. They need the food for their breakfasts and lunches. They need their teachers to be there to welcome them. Our school board members have the power to provide those resources. They can raise the school board millage by 0.25. School boards were told by our legislators to fill the hole in education funding that they were too craven to fill. In recession summer, school board members can provide stability to the lives of children. They can do the job they were elected to do.

Di Napoli of Pinecrest presents:
Fiscal policy and disposition of mitigation reserve funds
Krissals Bistro Grille Serving fine bistro food with a touch of class
To the Editor: We commend [Palmetto Bay Mayor and Village Council] on achieving the end of “mitigation,” which will save our village at least $1.5 million annually. This took a long time, hard work and we thank you. It is now time to recall again my previous messages urging a conservative fiscal policy that anticipates reduced tax revenues due to the economic recession and dramatically lower property values. The State of Florida and most municipalities are struggling with serious budget shortfalls and forced to make difficult decisions about cost cutting and prioritizing services. Palmetto Bay has significantly grown with new parks, a library and services. The approval of a new village hall adds further to escalating infrastructure support costs, which must over time be paid for by incremental tax revenues or funds from other sources. Although current funds may be available to support the village growth and resulting fixed and operating costs, tax revenues tend to reflect a lagging trend from the “moving average” characteristics of lowering property valuations. I anticipate that the worst drop in valuations is yet to come and we must prepare for this reality. We could say that the incremental reduced cost reflecting the elimination of mitigation will save the day and therefore we should not be overly concerned. I suggest that this is the wrong policy and that instead the village should adjust its budget to reflect real costs and use the reserve created by the mitigation windfall very sparingly. This windfall should be used for either a creation of an emergency operating budget shortfall fund for the future, a reduction in millage to help residents during a tough economic period or a combination of both. I strongly recommend that the budget for the coming year be reduced to reflect costs and revenue based on trend and absolute necessity and not rely on filling in the shortfall with a significant portion of the mitigation windfall. I know this is hard to do. Temptation is high to continue spending as if we are in normal times because we have the money. But I urge you to resist this temptation and develop instead a budget consistent with the economic times we face today and likely could for several years to come.

Alper JCC fundraiser to feature Magill’s ‘Sex and the Animals’ BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Miami Metrozoo’s Goodwill Ambassador Ron Magill presents his hilarious and critically acclaimed adults only show, “Sex and the Animals,” on Sunday, July 19, 7:30 p.m., at the Alper JCC. Magill’s classic performance, mixes a slide show with little-known scientific facts that help to illustrate the magical courtship and breeding behaviors found throughout the animal kingdom. More than 20 years ago, the irrepressibly cheerful Helene Leibowitz was working as the JCC adult program director and during that time befriended Ron Magill. How appropriate that this joyful woman decided to bring Magill’s “Sex and the Animals,” a show that is filled with laughter, to the center. The program was warmly received and, over the next few years, there were several return engagements. Now, what makes this event bittersweet is that the performance has become the first “fun-raiser” in memory

New Busway park-ride lot opens in Cutler Bay BY JOHN LABRIOLA
Because you have a choice
There’s good news for South MiamiDade commuters looking for relief from gridlock and the latest jump in gas prices. Miami-Dade Transit is opening a new 456-space Busway Park and Ride lot at SW 204th Street and 112th Avenue in Cutler Bay. County commissioners performed the official ribbon cutting on Friday, July 10. Located next to the Target shopping center, the new lot replaces the 95-space lot at SW 200th Street, helping alleviate the heavy demand for parking along the popular South Miami-Dade Busway, which enjoys more than 20,000 daily
boardings. The 20-mile-long Busway connects south Miami-Dade County with Metrorail at the Dadeland South station, allowing passengers to save money and time by avoiding traffic congestion on S. Dixie Highway (US1). “This new Park and Ride lot will fill a growing need as more and more residents discover the benefits of fast, stressfree commuting on the Busway,” said Miami-Dade Transit director Harpal Kapoor. “Our Busway Park and Ride lots usually fill up by 8 a.m. because of the heavy demand, and we know more people would use the Busway if the parking were available. Now it will be.” For more information about MiamiDade Transit or the Busway, visit online at <www.miamidade.gov/transit> or call 311.

Terranova Corporation has signed MM Couture at Kendall Mall, an addition that brings unique designer fashion to this popular and convenient Kendall shopping center. M-M Couture was scheduled to open on June 6 at Kendall Mall, 8831 SW 107 Ave. The 464-square foot fashion boutique is a destination offering designer clothing and accessories, along with the service and advice of two local owners who have their finger on the pulse of the latest styles. “Designer fashion was one of the few things missing from Kendall Mall, and I am so excited we’re adding it,” said Mindy McIlroy, Terranova executive vice president. “I am delighted that with M-M Couture, area shoppers won’t have to go out of their way or make a
special trip in order to shop for the latest designer trends.” And having the latest designer trends is entirely the idea behind M-M Couture, founded by local fashion connoisseurs Maria and Michelle. The store carries clothing and accessories from designers that include Collective Concepts, Rubber Ducky, Lush, Classique, Body Language, Aily V and Big Buddha. Maria and Michelle update inventory frequently and focus on the latest styles, so customers are assured they are seeing the latest that the fashion world has to offer. “We’re looking forward to opening our doors at the Kendall Mall and providing our customers with up to the minute trends that will suit their style and budget,” Maria said. “Our best compliment is our customers’ referral,” Michelle said.

BY KERRY T. GREEN Ten years ago, Jacob and Helen Shaham, developers and owners of The Palace Suites, promised residents a new, luxury independent living community that would embody the very best of retirement living. Not only have the Shahams fulfilled the promise to those first Palace Suites residents, they also have created one of South Florida’s premier senior living communities. Located at 11377 SW 84 St. in Kendall, The Palace Suites caters to active seniors and is part of a continuum of care campus which includes independent living, assisted living and nursing and rehabilitative care. The Palace Suites currently is home to nearly 200 residents. To celebrate the community’s 10th anniversary, residents and their families recently were treated to a black-tie, Oscars-inspired gala award ceremony and gourmet dinner. During the ceremony, the Shahams recognized those original 16 Palace residents individually and presented each with a commemorative gift for the occasion. “We’re truly honored that these residents were willing to take a chance on us and share our vision for the community. Each one of them has made significant contributions to our communities and we truly appreciate their loyalty,” Helen Shaham said. “It’s extremely gratifying to know that they continue to believe in The Palace Suites and have found such happiness in calling this their home for the last 10 years.” Throughout the evening, “Oscars” were presented to several residents in a variety of categories including “Athlete of
the Year,” “Lovebirds of the Year” and “Ambassador of the Year.” The audience was entertained by Palace Suites residents who drew rave reviews from the crowd for their performances, which included opera and Broadway standards. The Suites Sweets, a trio of residents, also wrote and performed a special song about life at The Palace Suites. A slideshow capturing the community’s past 10 years of growth was shown. Since opening in 1999, The Palace Suites has: • Served over 600 residents and families; • Provided full and part-time jobs with benefits for over 500 people, including high school and college students working part-time in the community’s dining room. Company wide, The Palace Management Group is one of the largest privately held companies in Miami-Dade County; • Supported numerous charities and non-profit organization such as the Alzheimer’s Association, Baptist Hospital, Redlands Christian Migrant Association and Susan G. Komen for the Cure; • Donated sponsorships, goods and services to the Kendall and surrounding areas, benefiting people of all ages and income levels; • Offered a gathering place for dozens of community groups to host events such as AARP, Hadassah and AMIT. Following the gala, the 300-plus attendees gathered in The Plaza for an anniversary cake presentation and champagne toast. Miamians go bowling to help save rhinos BY YURI MITZKEWICH Whether you’re an avid bowler or you can’t tell a bowling ball from a hockey puck, this July 24 one of the world’s rarest creatures needs you to come out and bowl. The Miami volunteer group, South Florida AAZK (a chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers) is preparing to throw its annual “Bowling for Rhinos” fundraising event. This year the event is taking place at Bird Bowl, 9275 SW 40 St., at 7:30 p.m. Whether participants roll gutter balls or strikes, 100 percent of their efforts will be going to raise money to help save one of the world’s most endangered animals. Since 1990 bowlers around the country have participated in the event, now helping to have raised over $2 million for rhinos since it first started. Every year all the profits from these fundraisers go to two important conservation projects: the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, and the International Rhino Foundation, which works globally helping rhinos where they are most at risk. Here in Miami, zookeepers have been helping with the local event ever since the first year, and now have raised more than $40,000, all going to support this important conservation work. In the beginning concerned zookeepers started organizing Bowling for Rhinos events, because 20 years ago African rhinos literally were on the brink of becoming extinct. Populations of the white and black rhino had sunk to numbers then were estimated to total only a few hundred individuals each. The species easily could have been gone forever, but luckily
for the rhinos, concerned people decided to act to help. For the black rhino especially, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy played a key role in protecting the animals, and gave them a chance to grow in their numbers. Bowling for Rhinos has played an important part in helping these conservationists on the ground do this important work. Today, a rhino in another part of the world is facing a similar fate to that their African relatives faced before. While rhino populations in Africa have since grown to a relatively more stable number, another type of rhino now has come as close to extinction as the others had ever been. In the Asian countries of Indonesia and Malaysia, two types of rhino still exist — the Javan and the Sumatran rhino. These used to exist throughout the region (their range extending from New Guinea all the way to India), but now these rhinos are just holding on in a few isolated and scattered areas. The population of the Sumatran rhino now is estimated to be 300 individuals, and the Javan is thought to number less than 60. As conservationists have done before, Bowling for Rhinos participants have created a unique opportunity for everyone to help in making a future for rhinos. Join South Florida AAZK and others in your community on July 24 at Bird Bowl for an evening of bowling and other fun activities that will go to benefit animals that right now need it the most. For more information about how you can participate in this important event, go online to <www.miamimetrozoo.com>; contact South Florida AAZK by email at <sfaazk@yahoo.com>, or telephone at 305-251-0400, ext. 84921.

Comedic talent from around world featured in improv fest BY ROBERT HAMILTON The 2009 Miami Improv Festival (MIF 2009) presented by Just The Funny, a weekend festival featuring improv and sketch comedy from around the world, continues to supply the laughs for its July weekend installment on Friday, July 17, and keeps the fun rolling through Sunday, July 19, at the Just The Funny Theater and Training Center, 3119 Coral Way. MIF’s seventh anniversary edition boasts the top improv and sketch comedy acts from around the world, performing shows and teaching workshops at the festival, adding to previous editions of what is Miami’s premiere comedy event, and one of the world’s top improv festivals. The 2009 Miami Improv Festival presented by Just The Funny features headliner, The Nuclear Family, the hit threeman/woman improvised musical from New York City. The trio is famous for their over-the-top singing and dancing in the hysterical improvised story of a family that is anything but normal. The producers of the Miami Improv Festival invited The Nuclear Family to perform as the weekend’s headliner because of their wild and always crazy plots mixed with the incredible singing, dancing and acting talents of John Gregorio, Stephen
Guarino, and Jimmy Ray Bennett. “It is a tremendous treat to have a group as funny and talented as The Nuclear Family here at the Miami Improv Festival,” said festival executive producer David Christopher. “After their breakout performance at the Miami Improv Festival in 2003, we have eagerly been trying to get their great show back to South Florida. These guys are hysterical, and it won’t be long before one, two or all three of them end up on a show like Saturday Night Live, so see them now here in Miami, while you can!” South Florida locals will recognize Miami’s own mainstay of improv comedy, Just The Funny, which will be performing, in addition to The Nuclear Family, with its own award-winning, popular brand of improv comedy. MIF 2009 also offers the public a rare chance to get in on the improv action with an incredible set of master classes taught by John Gregorio from The Nuclear Family, where students can learn how to do improv from one the nation’s best in the business. Classes will be offered during the day on both Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, and include a student performance for students to show off what they have learned. Tickets to shows and workshops are all available online at <www.miamiimprovfestival.com>.

Sergio’s restaurants all about family, hospitality and quality BY NANCY EAGLETON Sergio’s is all about family, hospitality and quality in their four Miami restaurants that serve the best, authentic, homemade Cuban food around. Blanca Cabrera is the magician in the kitchen, using secret family recipes perfected by her and her mother, Maria Rocho Cabrera, dating back to 1975 when they opened the first Sergio’s together on Bird Road. Today, Cabrera has the help of her son, Carlos Luis Gazitua, who joined his mother to run the three-generation family business after graduating Georgetown Law School. With the help of his brothers and father, the family has grown the business to include a Coral Way location that opened in 1992, the Kendall Restaurant and Café that opened in 2008 and the newest concept that opened during the first week of July, a location within the Hialeah Walmart. Gazitua said that the motto of the family business has always been “Keep it simple, fresh and homemade.” With this philosophy in mind, Sergio’s sets itself apart from other Cuban cuisine restaurants by offering

The majority of Sergio’s entrees are under $10 and many of the portions are so generous that they can be shared. Combine your favorite meal with Sergio’s beer and wine specials offered each month to equal a family meal outing that can’t be beat. “Sergio’s offers great portions at a great price point,” Gazitua said. “Many places offer two sides with an entrée and we offer three. Sergio’s provides a good family size meal and we never sacrifice quality. “Everything at Sergio’s is homemade and prepared fresh daily… we are painstakingly concerned about quality and freshness,” Gazitua added. Sergio’s offers a catering service for corporate meetings and events, parties, tailgating and holiday meals. For breakfast events, Gazitua suggests the Cuban Joe to Go, various egg sandwiches and Sergio‘s signature quiches. For parties and tailgating, try the Cuban minis platter, Cuban sliders, chicken tenders, and chicken and steak skewers partnered with all your favorite traditional sides. The Way To A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way To Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences BY HELEN SHAHAM Q. My husband and I are both in our 80’s. We’re considering a move to a senior living community and find that dining is included as part of the monthly fee. Since we’ll do most of our dining at the community we are worried that we’ll get bored with the food. How can we be sure they know how to create enjoyable experiences day after day? A. The dining experience is a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community. It may seem a bit hard to imagine eating most of your meals in the same place for an extended period time but rest assured innovative retirement communities don’t just make meals; they make the entire dining experience incredible. Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, dining can often be the highlight of the day. It’s the time residents gather to socialize and exchange stories with friends and neighbors. And, nothing goes with great conversation like a great dining. At The Palace, the first step in creating memorable dining experiences for residents is the selection of chefs with extensive culinary backgrounds. Alon Hershkowitz, the executive chef for The Palace Renaissance and Royale Assisted Living Communities, offers a wealth of knowledge and talent, having worked at several of the most luxurious hotels and country clubs including The National Hotel in Miami Beach. Under his culinary guidance, our Assisted and Catered Living residents enjoy fine dining which rivals some of the best gourmet restaurants. He marries their desire for comfort foods such as traditional meat loaf and brisket with his flair for creating French, Italian, Jewish and Mediterranean specialties. As people age, they experience a natural decline in their senses of taste and smell. Chef Alon compensates by increasing the intensity of the dish’s flavor and aroma with fresh, roasted garlic and special sauces and purees. “Dining has to be both enjoyable and healthy,” said Chef Alon. “We understand the need for limited to almost NO sodium and sugar intake and use only no-salt seasonings. We also offer a wide variety of sugar-free desserts.” Chef Alon, just like Gabriel Garrido, the Food Service Director of our Independent Living Community, The Palace Suites, believes there’s always a reason for a celebration and has created theme dinners throughout every month to heighten residents dining experiences. “Palace residents are well traveled and have very high expectations,” said Carrido, who has been with the company for over 10 years. “Employees get their greatest satisfaction from seeing residents happy; therefore, we go above and beyond to exceed these expectations while shattering the stereotypes of dining at a senior living community.” The Renaissance & Royale residents enjoy specialty dinners twice a month. Past themes have included German, Asian and Mediterranean. Suites’ residents enjoy gourmet dinners on Thursday nights with menu items including scallops and filet mignon. Also, the Suites’ Happy Hour is kicked up a notch regularly. Each features an international theme and dishes from the region are created along with the entertainment. Recent
Ask Helen
themed Happy Hours have included a Spanish Tapas event featuring over 20 different appetizers along with Flamenco Dancers and an Italian Antipasto Party with over 15 delicious offerings including Proscuitto di Parma and fresh tomatoes & buffalo mozzarella. Holidays and special occasions are yet another way The Palace communities make the dining experience special. The Palace Suites recently set a record when it hosted the largest Mother’s Day brunch buffet for over 140 residents and their families. The Palace also hosts a myriad of unique brunches throughout the year including a Sunday Gospel Brunch, a Country Western Brunch, an Oktoberfest Brunch, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and Hanukkah buffets, and more. Residents also have opportunities to voice their opinions about the dining experience at The Palace. In addition to talking with the Chef as he visits their table every dinner to solicit feedback, they can share their thoughts during the monthly Resident Council meeting or write their comments in The Palace’s bi-annual Resident Satisfaction Surveys. Our chefs and dining room mangers take other steps to further maximize resident dining satisfaction. White linen tablecloths adorn each table and are accented by fresh flowers. Residents also enjoy a glass of wine and freshly baked bread (baked in-house) with dinner, and the young wait staff is educated daily about the menu, the daily specials and their ingredients and how they should be served. “It’s not simply about food on a plate,” said Chef Alon. “It’s about service. The dining experience begins even before the server arrives at the table; personal service is paramount. Here, the dining staff knows residents by name and remember their preferences.” Chef Alon has launched an engaging, interactive cooking show too. Twice a month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along and eagerly look forward to eat the finished products. To help ease your fears, schedule a reservation for dinner at the community. Most communities will not hesitate to allow you to dine with residents. It’ll also be beneficial because you and your wife will be able to meet your potential neighbors in a social environment. If the chef at the new retirement community thinks as ours do—that the way to residents’ hearts is through great dining experiences—you’ll soon find yourself inviting your friends and family over to enjoy the wonderful experiences. If you have questions about the lifestyle changes that go with aging, or if you’d like to be invited to a social event at The Palace Suites, please send a note to Helen Shaham, The Palace Suites, 11377 S.W. 84th St., Miami, Florida 33173, call her at 305-271-2020, or email helen@thepalace.org.
Helen Shaham and her husband Jacob have been operating Senior Living Communities for the past 30 years. The Palace Suites in Kendall is a luxury Independent Living Community for active seniors. In addition, The Palace at Kendall campus is home to two Assisted Living Residences and a Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. GM showcases new Camaro for Miami automotive media
GM designer Luciano Nakamura is pictured beside a Chevrolet Camaro during a recent visit to Miami. (Photo by Anjelica Willard, Four Seasons Media) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
BY RON BEASLEY General Motors rolled out a quartet of striking new 2010 Chevrolet Camaros in late June to give Miami automotive journalists an up-close look at the latest incarnation of the company’s legendary muscle car. The four new Camaros — in black, Victory Red and Rally Yellow — were fanned out in the parking lot of the Rusty Pelican Restaurant on Virginia Key and available for members of the Miami-based Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA) to test drive along Rickenbacker Causeway. GM was the sponsor for the June SAMA luncheon meeting and Luciano Nakamura, one of the key designers of the new Camaro, journeyed from Detroit to tell the auto writers some of the secrets behind the development of the sleek new automobile. Nakamura, who was born in Japan and grew up in Brazil, said the new rear-wheel drive Camaro retains much of the look of the original two-door sports coupe design and is based on GM’s Zeta platform. Nakamura said the new Camaro was developed in the company’s top secret Studio X laboratories in Detroit and that he incorporated design elements from the F22 Raptor fighter jet and the
classic 1969 Camaro to design the new muscle car. But he said he remained true to the original look of the classic Camaro. Nakamura added that he thought the long hood, short deck and muscular fenders of the latest Camaro, with its squared-oval gauges and instruments, would get the approval of Camaro lovers the world over. Nakamura said the new Camaro is available in three models — LS, LT and SS — and with a choice of three engines — a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing, standard on LS and LT models, or a pair of 6.2-liter V-8s, including one with Active Fuel Management that helps improve fuel economy by shutting down four cylinders during certain light-load driving conditions. All models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Ten exterior colors are available and include black, Victory Red, Rally Yellow and Silver Ice Metallic. Red Jewel Tintcoat is optional. The color palette also includes Cyber Gray Metallic, Aqua Blue Metallic, Inferno Orange Metallic, white and Imperial Blue Metallic. The Camaro is on sale at Chevrolet dealerships across the country.

2009 Ford Edge delivers style and performance Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Ford Edge was introduced as a 2008 model, but apparently there was a need for a snazzier version. So, for 2009 Ford has added the Edge Sport to the lineup, targeting consumers who want a more personalized version of the crossover SUV. The Edge Sport is available with 22inch polished aluminum wheels or the standard 20-inch premium painted wheels, both mounted on 40-series Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. It also comes with an eight-piece, factory-installed body kit that includes a unique front air dam, side skirts, lower door caps and a rear skirt, all finished in body color instead of the dark lower finish on other Edge models. The front air dam comes with integrated fog lamps and a lower grille insert. The Edge design is highlighted by a distinctive three-bar chrome grille, an aggressively-raked windshield and a slop-
ing rear window with a high-mounted rear spoiler. Quad-beam headlights and a “powerdome” hood accent the front, and all four wheels are pushed out to the corners. A raised beltline emphasizes the sculpted shoulders around the sharp wheel arches. The Edge comfortably seats five and six-way power adjustable front seats are available. The reclining 60/40-split second-row seat folds to provide a level load floor for carrying equipment in the large cargo area. The Edge can haul items as long as eight feet with the available foldflat front passenger seat. Under the hood, the Edge has a 3.5liter, 265-hp V-6 engine mated to a sixspeed automatic transmission, a combination that delivers a solid performance and a smooth, quiet ride. The engine has a lightweight, die-cast aluminum block and four-valve-per-cylinder heads for smooth operation at high rpm. The automatic transmission uses a wide gear ratio to deliver good fuel economy and performance. Short first and second gears allow for a quick start and acceleration, while the tall overdrive gears deliver seven percent better fuel economy than a fourspeed automatic.
A distinctive three-bar chrome grille, an aggressively raked windshield and a “powerdome” hood accent the front of the Ford Edge crossover.
The Edge’s available intelligent allwheel-drive (AWD) system has been tuned with an emphasis on performance, but is equally efficient in all-weather driving. The system constantly monitors and predicts traction, then delivers torque to all four wheels, even before the wheels begin to slip. An active on-demand coupler can deliver the precise amount of torque to the rear wheels. Paired with available AdvanceTrac traction control, intelligent AWD can transfer torque front to rear and side to side, as necessary. A panoramic Vista Roof is an interesting option. The large glass forward panel measures 27 by 29 inches and has a tilt-
and-slide opening, while the rear glass panel is fixed and measures 16 by 31 inches. The oversized front panel allows for open-air driving and a wide view of the sky. Twin power-operated cloth shades can be closed simultaneously to block the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Pricing on the 2009 Ford Edge ranges from $26,635 for SE FWD to $36,605 for the Edge Sport AWD.

EMPLOYMENT
WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - You may come down with a shortterm flu-bug or have a touch of the "brandy ague". You'll be slower than usual, but this could turn out to be a good thing, because it will force you to look at some challenging things in much closer detail than you might have considered otherwise.
Taurus - If you are a parent it is play day this week but you just don't feel like getting off the couch. Once you drag yourself outside you'll find that you enjoy yourself a lot more than you thought you would. If you are not a parent, you may find it hard to get started on your own hobbies.
HELP WANTED
Gemini - A family member needs to be

brought down to earth - or they think you do. Either way, there is likely to be a confrontation with a bit of an "ego" overtone. You can avoid it by getting everyone to focus on shared needs, chores or on a homeimprovement project.

Cancer - It is too easy for you to come off as a pompous know it all this week. Don't be caught pontificating next to the watercooler. No matter what the political or social issue is under discussion, you are likely to be misinterpreted in decidedly "politically incorrect" tones.
Leo - There may be financial challenges right now, but any difficulties you encounter should be seen as character-building lifelessons. You have the opportunity to take a leadership role in responding to a crisis. You have an idea for a way to make a lot of money in a big hurry, but the truth of the matter is that the project is going to be a lot harder than you think. Virgo - You have to set some time aside to admire yourself in the mirror, but the truth is hard to avoid. You have to be more than just a pretty face in this world, and people aren't going to necessarily cut you any slack for your charm. You may find it backfires if you lay it on too thick in fact.
Libra - You could stumble across an old childhood hurt that is buried in your subconscious this week. If you find yourself acting oddly and you don't know why, stop for a moment and ask yourself "What is this all really about?" The answer could be healing. Scorpio - Challenging developments involving friends, associations or group activities are bringing you to be aware of the impact that others have on your life, for good or ill. You'll want to decide which friends to keep, and who you need to grow beyond. Sagittarius - You are going to be swapping steps on the career or social ladder soon and the changes, be they upwards or downwards, will bring stress and change with them. You will have to change your attitudes towards others, or the way you communicate with them. Capricorn - It looks like the old wanderlust
