Community joins to rescue July 4 fireworks celebration BY ALFIE SERGIO s a result of challenging economic times and budget cuts, a group of community leaders, municipalities and local businesses teamed up in an effort to save Black Point Marina’s July 4 fireworks celebration, dubbed “Save Our Fireworks Sponsors.” Nearly 8,000 spectators gathered on Saturday, July 4, to enjoy fun-filled family activities, great food, live music, a Coast Guard flyover, and spectacular fireworks display at Miami-Dade County’s Black Point Park and Marina, 24775 SW 87 Ave. in Cutler Bay. June a record month for recycling in county

BY ROBERT HAMILTON iami-Dade County set a new record in June, reaching the largest monthly total tonnage for recycling since the county started curbside recycling 19 years ago. “We looked back all the way to May 1990 and found that this past June our curbside recycling program collected more recyclable materials than any other month before,” said Solid Waste director Kathleen Woods-Richardson. “We recovered 5,556 tons of recyclables in June 2009, a new record for Miami-Dade County.” The record comes as MiamiDade County completes the first full year of its new single-stream curbside recycling program,

Village council approves four solar-powered signs BY BILL KRESS

he Palmetto Bay Village Council approved construction and installation of four separate entrance signs at its regular monthly meeting July 13. Motorists soon will be welcomed to Palmetto Bay with eco-friendly LED and solar-powered “monument” signs at four strategic gateway locations: just south of SW 136th Street on S. Dixie Highway (US1); just north of SW 184th Street on

US1; at SW 136th Street and Old Cutler Road, and at SW 183rd Terrace and Old Cutler Road. “We continue to brand and market our village as a welcoming place to live and work,” said Mayor Eugene Flinn. “These monument signs will set us apart in a tasteful and highly visible way.” The $92,500 contract was awarded to Hialeah-based Acolite & Claude United Signs Co. (AcuSigns). The signs were designed by Tom Grabowski Associates Inc.
