Ironman Triathlon may snarl Village traffic Oct. 30

T

he Miami Ironman Triathlon will wind its way through the streets of several Miami-Dade County communities on Oct. 30 and Pinecrest officials say that could result in some traffic problems for area residents.

The inaugural event – dubbed the Rohto Ironman 70.3 Miami and consisting of a 1.2mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1mile run – is expected to draw a capacity of 2,500 athletes to participate, thanks to the availability of 50 qualifying slots to the 2011 Foster Grant Ironman World Championship and a prize purse of $36,000.

Organizers say that because Miami has such a great variety of architecture and a wide diversity of cultures, the Ironman Miami has quickly become a destination event and attracted widespread interest in the triathlon community.

However, since the bicycle part of the event is scheduled to take place on a Saturday morning CHIEF JOHN HOHENSEE when vehicle traffic is usually heavy, local officials are concerned that there could be problems.

Positive PEOPLE in Pinecrest

KADEJAH MAPLE Kadejah Maple, a senior at Westminster Christian School, has been looking forward to her senior year for as long as she can remember, and now that it’s here it’s somewhat bittersweet.

“I’ve been waiting for this year to come.

I couldn’t wait to be a senior,” said Maple.

“Now it’s already started and I really can’t believe it’s here. I want to enjoy it and savor it, and I know I’m not going to want it to end.”

Maple will once again hit the court to play girls varsity basketball for the Westminster Warriors. She’s played on the varsity team since she was a freshman under the direction of head coach Lisa Nanninga and assistant coach Andy Miller.

“My coaches are great and the team camaraderie is excellent,” said Maple, who has been playing basketball since she was five years old and describes herself as a multi-task player. “With my height, I often play post. But, I also play power forward and guard as well.”

Maple’s Westminster team has gone to the regional finals every year that she has played and has been district champions in two of her three years.

“Kadejah has developed into a team leader at Westminster with her dedication to the sport and determination to be the best player that she can be,” said Coach Nanninga. “On the court she works with her team and she is a challenge for other teams to guard.”

Conditioning for the 2010-11 season has already begun, but for Maple conditioning and training never stopped over the summer. She played basketball during the summer months with Miami Ladies Express Basketball.

“A friend of mine who played for Miami Ladies Express encouraged me to attend a 6 a.m. practice at the beginning of the summer,” said Maple. “I practiced with the group and the coach offered me a spot on the team.”

Miami Ladies Express offers elite players who have the desire to play college basketball an opportunity to travel out-of-state and compete in top-rated tournaments that are often attended by college scouts searching for prospective student athletes.

“We traveled to Atlanta, New Orleans, Tennessee and Pennsylvania to play this summer,” said Maple. “We held car washes and sold raffle tickets to win a cruise to raise money for these trips.”

Over the summer, Maple also trained with members of the Palmer Trinity football team to keep in shape. Her father, Darryl Maple, is the Palmer Trinity football coach.

“That team is like my family,” said Maple. “I worked with them on footwork, drills, sprints and in the weight room.”

Sports and fitness are a way of life for Maple. Her mom, Zet Maple, is a fitness instructor at L.A. Fitness. Even her volunteer work has been centered around sports, such as spending time at the Palmetto Bay skate park supervising kids and working with them on skate boarding skills.

Maple hopes to continue playing basketball when she attends college next year. She plans to study nursing or anesthesiology and her top college choices include the University of North Carolina, Georgia State and the University of Miami.

KRISTEN COKE Extracurricular activities like working on the school paper keep Palmetto High School junior Kristen Coke a very busy girl. Last year, she was the paper’s copy editor and this year she is the focus editor.

“I’ve been working on the newspaper since I was a sophomore,” Coke says. “I was the first sophomore ever to be named an editor.”

Students are not usually given editorial positions so early in their newspaper careers, but halfway through the year Coke was named copy editor. She did well enough to be named Newspaper Student of the Year for the 10th grade.

Coke has accumulated about 500 community service hours even though she has been busy with the paper. She is vice president-elect of Interact, a community service club.

“We do beach clean-ups and toy drives,” she says. “We combined with another club called O Ambassadors. They did the Panthers Got Talent to raise the money needed to build a well (in a third world country).”

Coke is also involved in her church, Central Presbyterian, as a youth deacon.

“Our church youth does a lot of community service,” she says, “including feeding the homeless.”

They have also visited the elderly at the Palace and Coke has helped raise money for the church by working at Central’s

annual pumpkin patch.

“I volunteer there every year and help unload pumpkins,” she says. “I help the kids pick out the pumpkins. I love working with the little kids.”

Working with children is something Coke does as a volunteer at Vacation Bible School. She teaches them songs and participates in various youth activities.

“This year I worked with pre-school children,” Coke says.

She also works with high school students when she volunteers at the school library with her parents.

“They were the ones who initially had the idea to open the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” she says. “It’s kind of a family effort; my little sister comes along,” Coke helps students find books and checks them out. She also sets things up if kids need to use the computers or with print and copy material.

Coke is also involved with Woman of Tomorrow, a mentoring club led by the school librarian.

“We are the ones being mentored,” she says. “There are two business women who come in and they tell us how to be successful.”

Coke is involved with the Student Council at Palmetto. This year she is secretary of student involvement. She’s also a member of the English Honor Society, the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and she is the lab coordinator for the Science National Honor Society.

“I’m also in Thespians,” she says.

Last year she appeared in Bye Bye Birdie.

This year she hopes to be in more productions.

Sports are also in the mix for Coke and she hopes to be on the badminton team this year.

Coke attended Southwood Middle for the piano program, but decided not to pursue piano in high school because she’s not planning a career in music.

Coke says she’s thinking about college, but she hasn’t made a decision on which school she will attend or on her major course of study. However, she is interested in a school in New England, or maybe New York University.

“I just want to go to the college that would be best for me,” she says.

BLAKE HESSER Coral Reef High School junior Black Hesser is interested in business and

at Coral Reef and is a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the Business Honor Society.

This year, Hesser plans to compete in the FBLA competition. He thinks his entry may have something to do with computers. He says he enjoys his business classes and plans to be an accountant after college.

Hesser also enjoys playing baseball and basketball. He’s plays for fun in the Howard Palmetto Baseball Softball Association league and for the past two years he has played on the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center baseball team in the Maccabi Games.

“Last summer we went to San Francisco,” he says. “We won three games, but we lost the first game in the elimination round.”

This summer at the games held in Omaha, the team was more successful, winning the silver medal.

While he loves playing in the games, he also enjoys going to the games because he is able to participate in a Mitzvah Day, an

In San Francisco they helped prepare fields so underprivileged kids could play soccer.

Hesser also plays basketball in the high school league at the JCC and volunteers as a scorekeeper for the elementary school basketball league.

“I’m very active at the JCC. I’ve been there all my life and I know everything around there and I know everyone that’s there,” he says. “I’ve been going there almost every day since I was two or three years old.”

He’s garnered about 600 community service hours throughout high school, most of them at the JCC. He earned 480 working in the Leadership In Training position and as a Counselor In Training.

“As an LIT you are also kind of a camper,” he says.

He had the LIT position the summer before his freshman year and the next summer he was a counselor in training.

he says. “I really enjoy it. You get to see your friends every day and you get to enjoy being in your bunk.”

He worked with first and second graders who went to the pool 45 minutes a day and took them on weekly field trips. They also played sports and participated in art and music.

Hesser’s community service includes a stint as vice president of Patriots Outreach.

The group collected sports goods that were sent to Santo Domingo for needy kids.

For a change of pace, he worked on Stacy Glick’s successful judicial election campaign.

“I mostly went to polls and held signs trying to help get her name around and get people to vote for her,” he says. “It was during the early voting period; just one day.

I wouldn’t mind doing it again. It was a lot of fun.”

As far as his future is concerned, Hesser is starting to think about college. The one thing he does know is that he’d love to attend the University of Florida.

There is one remnant of open green space along South Dixie Highway that many Village residents drive by every day. That may be precisely the reason we have to keep fighting to keep it from being fenced in and paved over. This little oasis may be taken for granted and its beauty overlooked because it’s a blip in most people’s peripheral vision.

Ten years ago, after the park had been ceded to the Village by the county, there was a plan drawn up and promoted by the council to fill in the pond and build city hall on top of it.

A small but determined group of locals from both sides of US 1 campaigned to save it. As we stood out there holding signs, people stopped to tell us what the park meant to them. We heard nostalgic tales of early romance, of taking children and grandchildren to feed the ducks, of family picnics and Boy Scout projects. A friend said she frequently brought her dog over to swim in the pond. A man gave us money to make more signs. There was a public referendum and the majority voted to save the park.

At the recent September Village council meeting, a resolution was on the agenda for fencing in half the park and turning it into a dog park. It had a lot of public support. While I love dogs and like the idea of a dog park, the very idea of fencing this verdant open area gave me a visceral reaction, like watching someone drive a nail into a living tree.

I also objected to the creation of what would become a major attraction in a heavily trafficked area with narrow access and insufficient parking. It seemed an obvious disaster in the making.

Of course, there was a difference of opinion and many spoke in favor of having a dog park there. I accepted that. What I could not accept was the number of people who expressed their belief that the park is “wasted space.�

No one ever goes there was cited as a reason to change the status of the park from passive to active, adding fences, double gates for dog safety, shrubs to hide the fences, a “dumpster� for the inevitable waste, even “branding� of the park with sponsorship to take the bite out of the expense of keeping it clean in an economic downturn, which has curtailed other projects within the Village.

People see what they hear. If they hear that the park is underutilized, they don’t see the people in it.

Here’s what I see. I drive by the park almost on a daily basis, coming and going.

Often I see someone eating at the picnic table (if there were more picnic tables and benches, there might be more visitors). Many times I have seen a service worker having a sand-

What a difference in one’s day to take a green break, even if it’s only 15 minutes to eat a sandwich and drink a soda. When I see someone taking a few moments of respite there, I feel vicarious satisfaction that there are still places where we human beings can experience a few moments of solitude in nature right in the middle of a busy city.

I have seen people walking their dogs. I have seen a mother and her children eating something out of a pizza-sized box. I have seen solitary souls standing by the water lost in thought. Lately, I’ve seen large flocks of water fowl, a favorable nod from Mother Nature.

I also see my own internal video: A playback of Dave and Julie Ziska and their Eagle Scouts joining a group of residents in a clean up of the park in the early days of incorporation. I see myself sitting by the pond with my first child, spying through a long camera lens at the baby coots in their nests in the natural grasses that were once allowed to grow on water’s edge.

What I see is a green, shady space, a visual solace to being stuck in my car on my way to somewhere for the umpteenth time. It reminds me to breathe, it makes me say a blessing for shade trees and feel grateful that I don’t live in a part of town where mature trees are non-existent or have been pruned into green lollipops.

So when people call this wayside oasis a waste, the pond a cesspool, even suggest the pond should be filled in because, after all, it is only a “borrow pit,� not even natural, I wonder how we can see the same spot and draw such different conclusions.

I want to suggest to the park’s critics that they pack themselves a little picnic and go sit at the table in the shade and look out over the little pond, watch the water fowl fluffing themselves on the grass after a swim and then decide if this is wasted space. If they don’t have time to pull in and park, I suggest that, if stopped in rush hour traffic, they watch the wind blow the spray from the pond’s fountain and thank their lucky stars they’re not stuck in traffic in the paved-over parts of town where the color green has all but disappeared from the landscape.

“However, this event also affects other communities, so the police departments of the City of Miami, Coral Gables and MiamiDade County also will participate to insure the safety and security of this event.”

Hohensee said the bicyclists will enter the Village at Red Road and Kendall Drive (Southwest 88th Street) and proceed west to 67th Avenue, then south to 120th Street; then west to 82nd Avenue, then south until it crosses 136th Street exiting the Village.

About an hour later, after moving through Palmetto Bay and Cutler Ridge and onto Old Cutler Road, the bikers will race north and again pass through Pinecrest, before exiting into Coral Gables at 57th Avenue.

Hohensee said Village police will shut down various roadways that the bicyclists will be using for the duration of the race and the affects on traffic flow would continue to be felt until the last competitor departed Pinecrest.

“We are estimating that the bicyclists will arrive in the Village at about 7:30 a.m. and then they should all be gone by Noon,” he said. “We will have a significant uniform presence to make sure that people are not on that route either impeding the

ty and public safety, coordination with schools, control over land use decisions and enhanced cultural values, all in a more eco-friendly manner.

Corradino has been married to Mia since 1995. They have two children — Alexis, 11, and Joe, 7. Both attend Pinecrest schools.

Corradino is a graduate of Villanova University and received his Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati.

Since he was first elected, Pinecrest has maintained the second lowest tax rate in Miami-Dade County. The tax rate now (2.1) is lower now than it was in 2006 (2.4). At the same time, the Village has maintained its customary high level of service and a nearly $7 million budget reserve while making appropriate adjustments to staff levels.

The Village Council has created stability in the police force, continued the $50,000 school grant program, worked to uphold the land development code, initiated many drainage improvements and provided grants to both the Community Gardens Charitable Fund and the Pinecrest Foundation. The Council has developed a strategic plan to guide decision making and policy over the next several years, and fostered communication through multiple advisory committees.

“About two weeks before the event we’ll have message boards up on all of the affected streets informing people about the event and advising them to avoid those areas because we will be restricting traffic off those streets,” he said. “The biggest thing we’re trying to get across is that this event is going on and we need to cooperate with one another and if you absolutely have to get someplace on the day of the race, it would be prudent to leave early and consider taking an alternate course that doesn’t conflict with the race route.”

The Miami Ironman is being staged by the World Triathlon Corporation, sanctioned by USA Triathlon, and will begin at 7 a.m. with the kick off swim in Biscayne Bay near the Port of Miami, followed by the bike race that will lead athletes north to Watson Island, loop back through south Miami-Dade and then back along Old Cutler Road to Bayfront Park, followed by the run course across McArthur Causeway and back to the finish line at Bayfront Park. Time limit for the entire event is eight hours.

Committee, which developed nearly a dozen projects for the botanical aspect of Pinecrest Gardens, and has personally supported both charitable organizations in the Village.

Corradino has been deeply involved in our community for many years. As a professional urban planner, he worked on the first Pinecrest Comprehensive Plan. He served as the chairman of the Pinecrest Planning Board. He is now the Miami-Dade County League of Cities representative on the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Transportation Planning Council. He serves on the Miami-Dade County General Obligation Bond Citizen Advisory Committee; he is the incoming chairman of the Economic Development Council of South Dade; and, will be the 2012 Chairman of Chamber South. Joe was instrumental in creating the South Dade Municipal Coalition, a group of elected officials and citizens from all the communities along the U.S. 1 corridor, which focuses on land use, transportation and infrastructure issues in South Dade. With more than a quarter of a century of outstanding athletic tradition, Gulliver Schools will establish an athletic hall of fame to recognize and honor coaches, student athletes, administrators and friends of the athletic program.

The inaugural installation dinner will take place on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Preparatory School gymnasium, 6575 N. Kendall Drive. athletic programs at the school. In 1996, he was inducted into the Coral Gables Senior High School Hall of Fame where he was a football and baseball coach for many years.

For 27 years, Coach Jan Gomez served as volleyball and basketball coach at Gulliver and was also department chair for physical education. In 2006, she received the Miami Herald’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

From 1971 through 2007, Coach Chuck Tobey served as athletic director at the Preparatory School. Under his leadership, Gulliver won 26 state championships in 10 different sports, as well as many regional and district championships.

The longest serving headmaster of Gulliver Schools (1976-1995), James Williams was responsible for expanding the Preparatory School from 131 students to 650 students; and as the student body grew, so did the athletic program. Under his leadership, Gulliver Preparatory School was recognized as a U. S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

Visitors will find everything from the unusual to the unique sure to fit every taste and budget. Shoppers will find dazzling handbags, beautiful handmade jewelry, gorgeous floral designs, lovely memory boxes, pottery and birdhouses, and enjoy the work of artists from across the country.

There will be hand-crafted jewelry and luscious photography, handblown glass and whimsical ceramic work, and basket makers and bell makers will be on hand, as will woodworkers, leather artists and more.

“This is always a perfect time to begin

That camera ultimately saved her life and enabled her to document Jewish partisan activity during WWII. Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime Photography of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman opens at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Oct. 10. Schulmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rare collection of images captures the camaraderie, horror and loss, bravery and triumph of the rag-tag, tough partisans â&#x20AC;&#x201D; some Jewish, some not â&#x20AC;&#x201D; who fought the Germans and their collaborators. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want people to know that there was resistance. Vote NO on 8 to Get It Right

Hello, my fellow voting Americans.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure you feel the same puzzlement as I do when the candidate or issue I voted for comes up on the losing end. I shake my head in amazement, saying to myself, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The majority of my fellow citizens feel that way?

Really?â&#x20AC;? Even so, that is where it ends. The people have spoken and they have the final word.

Unfortunately, some Florida Legislators have a different thought process saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vote until you get it right.â&#x20AC;?

The voters made it clear to Florida Legislators in 2002. Citizens of Florida voted to have smaller class sizes. They knew it would cost money, but it would be money well spent providing quality education for our children.

The original Class Size Amendment was to be phased in over time and the Florida Legislature was required to fund it. But ever since the day this vote passed, some legislators have been working to have the Class Size Amendment either voted out or watered down. If that happens, it would mean millions more in cuts to education funding. Again, I find myself thinking, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Really?â&#x20AC;? Ask any teacher you know if putting more students back into classrooms is a good idea.

Legislators have placed Amendment 8 on the November ballot so we have another chance to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vote until we get it right.â&#x20AC;? But there is nothing â&#x20AC;&#x153;rightâ&#x20AC;? about Amendment 8. The

majority of Florida voters decided that the class size Amendment should be law, and now we must let the legislators hear the voice of Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s majority one more time.

Legislators donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like the Class Size Amendment -- never have and never will -- because the money must be spent in our schools! Yes, imagine that! The money must come to the schools themselves to make this happen! It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to a vendor! It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to a consultant! It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to the Florida Department of Education to recalibrate test scores!

Of course, the private schools to which these same legislators send their own children put out lovely color brochures explaining the individualized instruction and attention their students receive because of small class sizes! I am glad these legislators want to provide the best for their own children. But they are elected to take care of the children in our public school system and enforce the law.

We, through our own free will and rights as citizens, have voted to provide just that through the Class Size Amendment! We knew what we were doing the first time.

Voting NO on Amendment 8 will not raise your taxes. It will allocate a larger portion of the taxes you already pay to education.

In South Florida, with heat and humidity, air-conditioning in our homes and businesses is a fact of life, not a luxury. Your electrical power bill often spikes in warmer weather because you’re putting your AC to full use.

In some cases, the AC is vital for health, specifically for the elderly, young children, those with heart or neurological conditions, those using certain medications that affect the body’s ability to deal with heat. For the rest of the population, air-conditioning is still a much-used comfort feature of our homes and business places.

To maximize the benefit from your cooling system, consider these facts and tips: • A ceiling fan can make a room feel six or seven degrees cooler, according to Consumer Reports Greener Choices web site. As an example, you can turn on the ceiling fan when the temperature is 82 degrees and still be comfortable without using the air-conditioner. On hotter days, you could set the AC to 82 degrees and then let the fan do the rest. During the heat of the day, try running the fan at top speed. In the evening, the lowest speed will be adequate.

‘Thy will be done...’

This is how Jesus teaches us to pray: “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In other words, “God, do it your way, for your way is the best way. Your way is the way that leads to everlasting life, to true happiness and joy. Your way is the way of love.”

This why even in his agony in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays: “Father, not my will but your will be done.”

And this is exactly how Jesus teaches us to pray, for Christian prayer is not trying to change God’s mind, but it is seeking to know God’s mind; and in knowing it, seeking the courage to follow it.

“Thy will be done on earth and it is in heaven.”

Too often, however, we fall into a “Pagan way” of prayer; negotiating with God, we seek to “bribe” him by making promises we know that we cannot or will not fulfill.

Or we seek to wear him down with our insistent pleadings. How many times do we come across a person who has lost faith because of a prayer that apparently went unanswered? More likely, prayers were answered but not the way the person wanted them answered.

If we pray: “My will be done” the Lord, who knows better than us what we truly need, might answer: “No.” And such a “no” does not mean that God doesn’t love us or that he has abandoned us. As any parent knows, “No” many times is the more loving response even when a child wants to

hear “Yes”.

A Christian’s prayer is like trying to bring a boat into a dock. When a boat gets close to the dock or pier, someone throws out a rope (or a line, as those who are familiar with boating would insist). The line is thrown out onto the dock and is tied to a piling. Then the man in the boat pulls on the line and, in pulling the line, the boat comes up along side the dock. Pulling the line does not move the dock, it moves the boat. And pulling on that line more often than not requires great effort and perseverance, especially if the waters are particularly choppy.

God’s will is for us to know his love.

God’s will is for us to have life, life abundantly. Who needs to change that? Prayer, then, is not about changing God or changing God’s mind or will. It is about changing us, bringing us closer to him, to his will, to his plan for our lives.

Jesus tells us: “Just as I have loved you, you should love one another.” (John 13: 34) That we love is God’s will; and prayer makes love possible. Prayer can be difficult; it can require much effort; it is only learned by constant practice. But prayer pulls us in closer to God and to the knowledge of his will for us.

Can we dare pray thy will be done?

On April 20th, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Thomas Wenski as the fourth Archbishop of Miami and Metropolitan of the Province of Miami (which includes the seven dioceses of the State of Florida). Born and educated in South Florida Archbishop Wenski returned to his hometown and began his tenure as Archbishop on June 1, 2010.

As you probably know by now, Willie’s Boot Camp/SoMi Fitness of South Miami is a great place to get fit, lean and healthy.

What you may not know is that owner William Del Sol and Unni Greene are giving back to the community all year long with their Saturday morning Boot Camp to benefit the Children’s Home Society.

For more than a year, Del Sol and Greene have been hosting the Boot Camp for at Matheson Hammock Park in Coral Gables.

All they ask in return is a check donation made out to the Children’s Home Society, which provides the only shelter in MiamiDade County for abused and abandoned children. The Society also provides family and individual counseling, child abuse prevention and intervention services, homebased services, help for pregnant teens and first-time mothers, residential and group homes, adoption and foster care services, mentoring programs, family preservation and much more. Every year, CHS provides services to about 100,000 children and families throughout Florida.

“It is so important to give back to the community,” said Del Sol. “I wanted to help people less fortunate, and with the assistance of Unni I chose the Children’s Home Society. Children are so dear to my heart and they are the most defenseless and vulnerable individuals. It is a great feeling to be able to help them.”

Del Sol and Greene have raised thousands of dollars throughout the year for the Children’s Home Society.

Each week, people come and enjoy the Boot Camp and bring family and friends.

Many have been there from the beginning, like Julio Hanono and Ron Novas, who often bring their own children and families to enjoy the work out. They now consider the Boot Camp a necessary part of a great week-end.

“These guys never miss and it’s amazing to have people with that positive energy stepping up to the plate week after week,” said Del Sol. In addition to the Charity Boot Camp, last Christmas Del Sol and Greene spearheaded a collection and donation of Christmas gifts that were donated to the children of Oliver Batista Church congregants in South Miami. Del Sol and Greene felt that there was a need and reached out to the community.

“When they saw the toys lined up that they could choose, the joy on the children’s faces from was priceless,” said Greene.

Del Sol and Greene are planning to collect toys again this holiday season. They hope to team up with local businesses such as Boca Tanning of South Miami, a company that has supported Willie’s Boot Camp from the beginning.

Willie’s Boot Camp and SoMi Fitness are located in South Miami. Both Del Sol and Greene are certified personal trainers, with specialties in nutrition planning and counseling, and in personal and group training.

Carpe Diem Academy caters to special needs kids

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD Lissa Torres wants to make sure kids don’t miss out on a single day of their potential.

That’s why she opened Carpe Diem Academy in 2005.

“We are a private school for children of special needs,” she says. “The majority are autistic.”

However, Torres says they do serve children of all sorts of special needs.

“We are considered a McKay Scholarship school,” she says. “We are Medicaid providers as well.”

All Carpe Diem students attend on the McKay Scholarship, which gives parents a choice as to whether to keep their special needs child in public school or place them in private school. The school provides therapy services on site, which are paid for by Medicaid or private insurance.

Carpe Diem, 15924 SW 92 Ave., has kindergarten through 12th grade. Class starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., and then afterschool care begins.

“We also provide after school services,” she says.

The school provides tutoring, speech, physical and occupational therapy and Torres says they have all the services on site to help

the parents with special needs kids. The children have all of their needs met during the school day, relieving parents of the need to run around after school taking their kids to a

variety of therapists. Those services are open to children attending other schools.

“We also have a registered nurse on staff,” she says.

The registered nurse is Gelin Gonzalez, Torres’ mother.

“We do have a program and a class for children who have Attention Deficit Disorder or learning disabilities,” Torres says. “As soon as they have progressed to the level they need to be at, we do try to put them in regular school.”

The kids with learning disabilities or ADD can go to regular schools, but their parents want the smaller class size ratio that Carpe Diem provides.

“We have had students at the high school level that transitioned to Coral Reef High and started at Miami-Dade,” she says.

For those who are not high functioning, Carpe Diem provides community-based instruction.

“We prepare them to have functional skills to be active members of the community and maybe hold jobs at Winn Dixie,” she says.

There are 53 students at the Palmetto Bay site. A second school has just opened in Little Havana. One of the things that makes Carpe Diem different is that the school requires parents to volunteer at least 20 hours each aca-

demic year, including field trips.

Because of its community partnerships, the school offers students programs they probably wouldn’t have access to elsewhere.

There are martial arts lessons, yoga and the kids participate in participate in culinary arts classes.

“We’ve gotten a lot of them to try and eat things their parents swore they would never eat,” Torres says. “We do music therapy and we try to bring in an art therapist once a month.”

Before opening her own academy, Torres was the administrator of a special needs charter school.

“What would end up happening is that the parents would put their student in middle school programs and by the end of the first year, their progress was gone,” she says.

Carpe Diem is completing the accreditation process for the Association of Independent Schools of Florida. Teachers are certified ESE and assistants have at least 60 hours in early childhood development studies and experience in working with kids with special needs.

All teachers are certified in DIR/Floortime, a program developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan.

Josepo, a self taught artist and welder, was born and raised in Santiago, Chile and moved to Miami in 1974. Since his arrival in Miami he has been involved in the construction industry working in different capacities in the residential and commercial aspects, which led him to start his own contracting company for the last 20 years.

During those years, Josepo observed different methods, shapes and technologies,

which allowed him to develop a knack to create things and imagine these shapes and materials in different life and purpose by being incorporated to create something new.

For as long as he can remember, Josepo has enjoyed working with his hands where he would do some kind of creation that made sense to him, either by using colors, materials or shapes. What started as a hobby transformed into a passion. Through his artwork, Josepo communicates and expresses a feeling, a memory, an experience or simply provokes a reaction by the viewer through the interaction with the piece, causing the spectator to have their own interpretation.

LET’S TALK CARS I had to drive up to North Carolina recently and — as luck would have it — I was testing the 2010 Dodge Challenger for the week, the perfect car for the trip.

After crossing the Georgia state line, virtually everywhere we stopped someone came up to me with a question about the car, which made my job of digging up information a great deal easier.

And the Challenger turned out to be an exceptionally nice road car — powerful and responsive, easy to handle and really quite comfortable. By the time we returned, I found myself with a grudging respect for the big American muscle car.

And the Challenger does have a lot going for it — an unmistakable design, a proven rear-wheel-drive platform, powerful engines and technology — to the delight of driving enthusiasts around the country.

The Challenger is a five-passenger, twodoor coupe, but rides on the same rear-drive

platform that complements the four-door Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. It’s available in three models — SE, R/T and SRT8 — and you have a choice between two legendary HEMI V-8 engines or a fuel-saving V-6.

Challenger SE — lists at $21,320 and comes with a 250-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and fourspeed automatic. It has cloth upholstery (leather is optional), air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, 60/40 split-folding rear bench, tilt/telescoping steering column, cruise control, remote keyless entry, AM/FM/CD/MP3 four-speaker stereo, visor vanity mirrors, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Have I been tested for HPV? Am I appropriate for the vaccine?

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, and is what I consider “the common cold of the vagina”.

We now know that HPV is the cause of precancers of the cervix, and cervical cancer. It is the very reason we recommend women have a pap smear. We can improve the sensitivity of pap smear screening by testing for the HPV virus. We usually do not test women in their 20s, since the infection comes & goes so commonly in this age group. However, it is recommended that women over 30 be tested every 3 years. Did your doctor test you? There are 2 different types of vaccines for HPV, both of which can be given to girls as young as 9 or 10.

They must be given by the age of 25-26, and to my mind, represents one of the most important things girls and women in this age group (or the moms who look after them) can do for themselves. Much like I have never seen Polio during my professional career, generations from now hopefully the same can be said for cervical cancer.

It is normal that my periods are so heavy? What can be done, and do I have to live like this?

Uterine cancer is, by and large, a preventable disease. In order to prevent it, we must find it as a pre-cancer when it can easily be treated. A simple office based biopsy can make or rule-out this diagnosis.

Assuming that heavy periods are just because of age, or “peri-menopause”, or having had children, is simply dangerous.

Once we know a woman is normal, there are several great options for getting rid of heavy periods. An endometrial ablation can be performed in a doctor’s office without general anesthesia, and can reduce menstrual bleeding by 50-100%! There are even great non-hormonal medications now that can significantly decrease heavy menstrual bleeding.

Is my current birth control the best one for me?

Now there are many different low dose pills, the vaginal ring, implantable contraception (in your arm), and two different types of IUDs. There truly is something for everyone.

Gala to be held in Pinecrest to benefit the Transplant Foundation

In seventh grade, Priscilla Suzal-Wright started making friendship bracelets as a hobby. About the same time, she and her mother were volunteering with the transplant foundation.

Her mother had gotten involved with the foundation when she and a friend participated in a holiday angel program and the child was involved with the transplant foundation. The little boy had a bone marrow transplant and they gave presents to him and his brothers and sisters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted to really bring Christmas to them,â&#x20AC;? Suzal-Wright says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was life changing. We fell in love with it. We started going to the walk-a-thon. Now we know plenty of people with transplants.â&#x20AC;?

Suzal-Wright brought volunteering and fundraising together by selling the bracelets to raise money for the foundation.

She sold the bracelets to most of the people she knew, friends, family and her momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s co-workers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anyone I could get hold of. Slowly but surely it got bigger,â&#x20AC;? she says.

It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t long before she gathered her friends together to form a fundraising group called Knots of Hope. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I brought in my four closest friends last summer. We brought in their sisters and their friends. And now there are other girls who want to join as well,â&#x20AC;? she says.

Today there are 23 girls involved. The group includes Lauren Martin, Nikki Baralt, Gaby Baralt, Rachel Jara, Nati Aguirre, Nicole Aguirre, Taylor Perry, Tatyana Bidopia, Isabella Leventhal, Natalie Abad, Patricia Trujillo, Marlin Gonzalez, Scarlett Artola and Carolina Flores.

They are selling more bracelets than ever. They also donate bracelets to children at Miami Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital, where they also volunteer.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grown a lot since the seventh grade,â&#x20AC;? she says.

Melissa Chediak-Wetzel, the Transplant Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director of development, says they have taken something that is fun and girly and made it into a truly benevolent act. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They visit the kids at the hospital and they visit our Transplant House once a month,â&#x20AC;? Chediak-Wetzel says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an uplifting experience for the patients and for the parents as well.â&#x20AC;?

If Chediak-Wetzel has her way, the Knots of Hope girls will get permission to go to the transplant floor at the Holtz Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital so they can visit the children there.

Most of the girls are in high school at Coral Reef, Ferguson, MAST, TERRA, Southwest and Killian. Some of the girls attend Arvida Middle School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We do garage sales. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping to do a car wash,â&#x20AC;?

Suzal-Wright says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We do walkathons. We have volunteered at various events for the transplant foundation.â&#x20AC;?

On Oct. 2, the group is putting on its first gala.
