ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

A salute to Columbus HS’s Brother Kevin BY GRANT MILLER

Publisher I first met Brother Kevin Handibode in 1977 when I was still in college and he hired me as an assistant coach for the Columbus High School football and baseball teams. In the 30-plus years that I have known him, I have come to respect and admire him as a man of integrity and honesty, and for all the good he has done for this community. When you say Brother Kevin, in essence you are saying Columbus High School. Brother Kevin is one of the people who have made the school into the outstanding educational facility it is today. It was he who instilled the qualities of honesty, integrity and good sportsmanship in literally thousands of young men who moved through the halls of the school on their various paths to becoming productive adults. He taught them the meaning of life and instilled in them all the necessary things they needed to become the future leaders of tomorrow. After 36 years s e r v i n g Christopher Columbus High School, Brother Brother Kevin Handibode Kevin is a true leg–––––––––––––––– end at the private, all-boy Catholic school. No other person has worked in more capacities at Columbus — teacher, dean of discipline, varsity basketball coach, athletic director, development director and principal. Today, he is president of the school, a −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−

Village Council meetings go ‘live’ online BY LEE STEPHENS

n March 10, the Village Council will officially inaugurate a new streaming media service on the Village’s web site at <www.pinecrest-fl.gov>. The new service, approved by the Village Council last December, will provide live streaming video of all Village Council meetings. An archive of meeting videos and other important videos, including the mayor’s recent State of the Village address, is also available on the site. “This is another avenue of communication with our residents,” said Village Clerk Guido Inguanzo and the Village’s webmaster. “Mayor Cindy Lerner and the Council want to facilitate citizen participation and this is another steps toward that goal.” To access the streaming media page, users can visit <www.pinecrestfl.gov/live> or click on “Streaming Video” on the home page.

DIANE HORN Diane Horn is Gulliver Prep’s Silver Knight nominee in the Foreign Language category. Learning new language has come easily to Horn, who has a multi-cultural background. Her paternal grandparents are from Syria and Egypt, and her maternal grandparents are from Italy and Germany. They all moved to Brazil before Horn’s parents were born. Horn was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and moved out of her country when she was four years old. Her first language was Portuguese. She also speaks English, Hebrew, Spanish and French. “I took French when I was younger and I was learning Hebrew,” she says. “I can understand it. I’m starting French again this year and I hope to continue in college.” Horn says she thinks in a mixture of Portuguese and English. This past summer, she was able to improve her Portuguese when she worked for Discovery Network Brazil. While studying languages and other top level classes, Horn also takes time to work for the community. She is president of Interact, a service club sponsored by Rotary International. As president, she plans community service projects, including feeding the homeless at the Community Partnership for the Homeless Shelter. “We go there three times a year,” she

says. “We try to raise $500 each time we go. You can go without the money, but we decided it would be better to donate to them. We prepare and serve the food.” Each time they visit the shelter, they take along 25 students. Not only do they feed the adults, they also help the children by playing with them and assisting them with homework. Horn suggested that they assist the homeless shelter to the president of Interact when she was in her freshman year. “I went there with a family friend when I was 13,” she says. “I fell in love with the organization and I felt that in high school one of my goals would be to help them as much as possible.” When a visit to the shelter is coming up, Interact officers hold meetings to decide on the menu. Once those decisions have been made and it’s time to go to the shelter, two officers are put in charge of the kitchen, two are in charge of the children and one officer floats between both areas. “We talk to them, explain the project and explain basic rules about behavior,” she says. “We make sure they understand the purpose of what the shelter does, which is not only feel the homeless but to get them out of a vicious cycle.” Interact members help fund club activities by putting on a fashion show each year at the Pinecrest Prep campus. Last year, they raised about $2,000. They have 40 models participating, from freshmen to seniors. Members use their connections to help bring in items needed for the fashion show. “The students enjoy it and we have performances by several students,” she says. “We get the whole school involved.” Horn has also been involved in Friendship Circle, where students are matched with children with disabilities or life threatening diseases such as cancer. She would visit two autistic boys once a month to play with them. When she goes to college, Horn plans to major in psychology and minor in business before going on to law school. She has applied to eight universities, most of them liberal arts schools, including the University of Miami.

SIMONE WEISBERG A couple of years ago, when it was time for a Bat Mitzvah project for her, Simone Weisberg knew she wanted to do something to honor her cousin, Tsachi Krapes, who died in the second Lebanon War just one day before it ended. “He was a medic in an elite unit,” Weisberg says. “He and his troops were taking a rest in an empty hotel in the middle of the night when it was bombed.” Weisberg and her family felt helpless. They wanted to do something to honor Krapes and to help other Israeli soldiers. So Weisberg created the Tsachi Krapes Memorial Foundation with the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces to benefit the welfare of the brave men and women who protect the Jewish state. The first effort raised about $4,000 in Krapes’ honor. The Bat Mitzvah fundraiser went well, but even then Simone decided that was not finished with the foundation and wanted to do more. Now a freshman at Palmetto Senior High, she woke up one morning and told her mother that she wanted to put on an event in Krapes’ honor. Her mom suggested that she approach the Friends of the Israeli Defense Fund. The organization liked the idea and it became a South Dade event for the IDF. On Jan. 25 at Bet Shira, Funk! Fashion! Fundraising! was held to raise money for the foundation.

“Our goal is to use the proceeds for a medical transportation vehicle or a mobile gym for the soldiers,” Weisberg says. “My ultimate goal is the ambulance, but that costs more than $50,000.” Another goal was to have children of all ages and their parents enjoy a musical jazz performance by University of Miami students, as well as a fashion show with models from several synagogues. The event raised about $6,500 and drew 150 people. “I’m really hoping to do this annually,” Weisberg says. “The money will continue to go to the foundation and Tsachi’s unit.” Weisberg gained support from area synagogues through the temple’s youth groups. The temples involved were Bet Shira, Samu-El Or Olam, Bet Breira, Beth Am, Temple Judea, the Dave and Mary Alper Community Center and the Greenfield Day School. Two girls from each synagogue and Weisberg’s sister, Miriam, who flew in from Israel, and took part in the fashion show. Major General Yitzhak Gershon, the national director of the Friends of IDF, also attended and addressed the audience. Weisberg worked hard to make the event a success. Notices were sent out by the local temples and even Palmetto High School sent a flyer to students’ homes and promoted the event with inschool announcements. Other area schools were also notified and asked to send home information, including Greenfield, Gulliver, Killian and the JCC. The event included a silent auction, with prizes such as a weekend at the Ritz Carlton-Key Biscayne, sports memorabilia and artwork by Robin Morris. And it was truly a family affair. Buses were sent as far north as Boynton Beach to pick up older Weisberg family members and their friends so they could take part in the fundraiser.

DANIEL SMITH Gulliver Prep senior, Daniel Smith, the school’s Silver Knight nominee for business, has long been involved in a charity called Sunny Shores Sea Camp, which

sends children with cystic fibrosis to a camp. Each spring, a golf tournament is held to raise money for the charity. That tournament brings out some of Miami’s foremost business people. “The golf tournament raises money to send children to a respite week, in sponsorship with Disney, to learn about their disease, that it is a disease you can live with,” he says. “We have adults coming to the camp and children as young as one or two years old. It’s a chance to have an educational experience and at the same time make friends.” While the tournament was always successful, Smith realized there was something missing – a marketing program for the charity to branch out. “What I did was research what makes people give,” Smith says. “There are millions of applications and sponsorship requests. What could I do to make people, when they open the application say, “Wow! I need to give to this charity.” So, Smith bought a red folder and he created brochures to put inside the fold-

er. The brochures included the charity’s mission statement, identified past sponsors were and outlined who the charity benefited. “I created a promotional DVD,” he says. “On the DVD, we had clips of the children and their experiences. I had pictures of the golf tournament and how we raise money.” Smith says he found that when he listed the past sponsors, new companies wanted to be involved. “The last thing I did, probably in 2007, was to scrap the old website and sit down with a webmaster to design a new website,” he says. “It’s easy for the campers to go to the site and get information about registering for the camp in the summer, and for new campers to ask questions and read about it. I also created a mini-website for the golf tournament.” The feedback from his efforts has been positive and he has raised about $30,000 in product sponsorships and merchandise for the golf tournament raffle and silent auction, including cruises from travel agencies and participation by vari-

ous sports teams. “The response from the market was, to be honest, fairly surprising,” he says. Smith was also expecting the sports teams to say no because they are hit by applications from so many charities asking for something. The next golf tournament is scheduled for April 29 at Doral. Along with his extraordinary work for the camp, Smith is a recreational tennis player who works as a tennis coach at the Jane Forman Tennis Academy during the summer. He also works as a counselor at the Sunny Shore Sea Camp, so he gets to see the beneficiaries of his work. “I have this one kid, Cody, who is in his third year with the camp,” Smith says. “Last year he came in and jumped in my arms, and his parents told me, ‘He has not stopped talking about you since last year.’” Smith plans to major in accounting in college and then go on to grad school to get his MBA. He has been accepted by a several schools, including the University of Georgia, one of his top choices.

SALUTE,

position he has held for the last seven years, along with being the freshman basketball coach. Just last fall, Brother Kevin received the Papal Cross, the highest medal given by the Papacy and awarded for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. Brother Kevin became a Marist Brother in 1957 when he was just 18 years old. He has dedicated his life to education ever since. Before coming to Columbus in 1966, he was a teacher and coach at Archbishop Molloy High School in New York. He also served as principal at Marist High School in New Jersey for several years in the 1990s. I still smile when I recall that in his early years at Columbus when he coached the basketball team, the students called him the Shark. They said it was an appropriate nickname because he was tough, both as a coach and a dean. His hard-nosed coaching style helped Columbus win a district championship in 1972 and a Southern Division Championship of the GMAC in 1976. In all, he coached varsity basketball at Columbus for 18 years and had only three losing seasons. He retired as coach in 1988 to become principal. Brother Kevin is infamous for his ability to negotiate and fundraise. Since he started the school’s development program back in the 1980s, he has been able to raise money for countless school projects, including new buildings, reno-

vations and financial aid programs. Last year Brother Kevin celebrated his 50th anniversary as a Marist Brother. Devoted to the Marist principles of forming young people as good Christians and good citizens, he is well known for his constant outreach and care for the young, especially for his energetic and tireless effort to provide educational opportunities to students of various economic levels. He is a model citizen and leader in our educational community and a real hero to the thousands of young men whose lives he has helped shape at Columbus. Because of his great commitment and vision, the school has grown tremendously over the years. Today Columbus has an enrollment of almost 1,400 young men and just opened a $13-million technology complex and is consistently named as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the nation.

‘Just do it’ does not mean steroids BY COURTNEY WOOD Major League Baseball players can say what they want, but they are going to have to start taking some responsibility for their actions. Whether its over-the-counter supplements containing “banned” ingredients that can be purchased at local vitamin stores or the weekly knock at the door with a custom mobile pharmacy at their disposal, enough is enough. After the countless suspensions, fines and big-boy denial cry-a-thons, when is this going to end? Falling legends and role models giving in to the deception of “it’s never enough.” Baseball is crumbling and kids are getting confused and sucked into a world of selfishness and “image first.” Driving in the car the other day I was shocked to hear one of my brother’s friends say, “What’s the big deal with steroids? I mean, everyone does them. And the players that don’t (do them) stink!” This trickle-down affect is destroying an entire generation of kids’ determination and drive. Kids today are going to be looking for the easy way out, and why not? Their heroes did. I mean, come on, a pro ball player spends two weeks in the Dominican Republic, comes back 24 pounds heavier and swears by the good food and rigorous workouts. I hate to be a skeptic but I could name about 20 of my guy friends that would sign up for that deal in a minute. Why this sudden surge of substance use? After speaking with a former Yankee, now a private coach, he summed it up quite simply: “In baseball like any other sport, there are huge dollars involved, kids are being groomed at a young age and parents will do anything at any cost to get them there.” Oftentimes parents’ competition becomes the overriding reason why

SPORTS TALK young people get on a program of controversial supplements. Visit any baseball field today and you see it, you know it’s there, competition at an ultimate level. It all starts with the five and six year olds getting screamed at by mom and dad to “try harder” and professional batting coaches working at the cages with eight-year-old hopefuls. Where is the transition from youth to adulthood, where kids become obsessed with being the best? Who pays for it? What is the cost of being bigger and faster? Cycles of testosterone and Decca costs hundreds weekly. Over the counter sups range from $40 a week and up. Then there is he vacation to the DR, thousands. Who are the heroes that remain part of a club, a separate society of nonusers? Dan Uggla, David Ortiz, Derek Jeter just to name a few. Hang in there guys, we’re counting on you! I spoke with a newly-recruited Texas Ranger and asked how he did not give in to the pressure of “stepping it up” just a few times for the sake of being the best. He told me that it (steroids) is all around every player all the time, in every sport, but that it’s a matter of personal choice and old-fashioned values. I guess he didn’t take the slogan “just do it” literally. At least, not yet. Hey guys, take it from a sister, friend and cousin. We’re not impressed. As a matter of fact, we are sick of you guys constantly ruining our sports memories and making us lose faith in you, our heroes. So while you are obsessed with getting bigger and faster at any cost, we are just trying to enjoy the game, the same game you once enjoyed when you were a kid.

Kids at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) received special Valentine’s Day cards and a bag of toys to play with while they awaited treatment. Pictured are (l-r) are Michelle Nelson and Vivian Briones of JDCH, Allan Prindle, president/CEO of Power Financial Credit Union, Rocky Raccoon, the JDCH mascot, and Tangi Brownlee, Katie Maltby and Samantha Daugherty, from the Child Life Department at JDCH. Thanks to the efforts of a group of elementary school students in the art class at Chapel Trail Elementary in Pembroke Pines, and in partnership with Power Financial, Prindle and Rocky Raccoon not only delivered the cards and toys, but also set up an arts and crafts station in the patient’s playroom so the kids could create their own Valentine’s Day cards for friends, family, nurses, doctors and the many other special people in their lives. “It was great to see the inherent joy that our Valentine’s Day card and toy delivery brought to the kids and we were glad to have the opportunity to spread some smiles and cheer to the patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital,” said Prindle.

A trip around the corner BY LYNN WILLE FICHMAN The Pinecrest Garden Club’s February meeting was a field trip of sorts, but members didn’t have to travel far. One of the club’s members lives just blocks from Pinecrest Gardens where the group regularly meets and her backyard was the setting for this month’s get together. Sandwiches and salads were served on the patio and 50 members and guests, which turned out to be one of the largest groups of the year, had a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather and the lively conversations that were going on all around. Geoff Gordon, a well-known local landscape artist and designer was on hand to officiate during the garden tour that followed. He began by mapping out the landscape evolution of what is now a thickly foliaged and unique yard. When he was first contacted by the owners nearly six years ago, it was a blank slate, with little more than a Ficus hedge that lined the deep acre, some Coconut palms flanking the corners and vast stretches of lawn. That was to quickly change. The first stage of the project involved the installation of a pond and ten foot waterfall made of oolitic limestone cap rock interspersed with driftwood. A groundwater recirculating system pumps fresh water down the waterfall, into the pond and through a small river, eventually making its way back into the pond. The waterfall cascades through the rocks and is topped with several heights of palm trees, making it appear as though the water is coming from a mountain stream. The pond is surrounded by a lushly landscaped coconut palm over canopy to provide enough shade to prevent algae growth. The owners so enjoyed the new addition and the Koi and Cichlids they introduced into the pond, that they asked Geoff to build a second one in the far corner of the property. This is a smaller version of the first and it is lined with layers of Pennsylvania mass rock. It, too, feeds into the river recirculating

PINECREST GARDEN CLUB system and is landscaped to provide shade. The fruits of Gordon’s vision are now in full bloom in this yard. Pinewood bark pathways are lined with coral rock and wind through its various sections, ten different varieties of bamboo provide a tunnel effect and shade, and mounds and berms that were created from the excavated fill are dotted with iris and ground orchids, lending height and visual interest. Two dry rock rivers are an aesthically pleasing feature as well. Thick clusters of monstera give a jungle-like feel to the back side of the large pond, and assortments of bromeliads that have been adapted for both the sun and the shade thrive and reproduce in the rocks and on the ground. Hundreds of orchids hang from trees and are attached to the palms and oaks throughout the property. Gordon strives for visual impact and the illusion of more space and greater depth and width in all the yards that he designs. He accomplishes this by cascading plantings away from the smallest to the tallest, while always paying particular attention to color, variety and adaptability. He has been creating backyard paradises for satisfied clients in Pinecrest and throughout Miami for many years. He may be contacted through his company, Falls Among Gardens, at 305-266-8329. NEXT MEETING — BROMELIADS On March 10, the club will visit Palm Hammock on Southwest 66th Street where there will be a presentation on the care of bromeliads. The Pinecrest Garden Club is open to all garden enthusiasts and neophytes and welcomes new members regularly. For information call Don MacInnes at 305666-5168.

REAL ESTATE When one hears the word “foreclosure,” images are conjured of families unable to meet their loan commitments and being forced to consider unpleasant options. However, it’s not only homeowners that suffer from a foreclosure. Renters can be “out on the street” if their landlord defaults on mortgage payments. A report from the Mortgage Bankers Association states that nearly 20 percent of recent foreclosures have been against investors who did not live in the property, and even tenants in good standing face having a vacate the premises if they’re renting on of these properties. Why mention this doom and gloom scenario? Because home values have

declined and buyers are seeing the best deals in many years. While unpleasant for the sellers, price declines increase affordability for buyers; so if you have been renting, now is a fantastic time to turn that monthly payment into equity. Interest rates have inched up, but still historically low rates combined with very affordable housing yield a formula that should put you in a home that you own you are now paying for rent. Not to mention that at a lower purchase price, you’ll enjoy some great appreciation over the coming years. Just because you’re renting now, you’re not necessarily safe from suffering the consequences of a foreclosure. Take matters into your hands and buy yourself some peace of mind.

Inauguration was a day filled with once-in-a-lifetime moments BY BEN PAIKOWSKY How many once-ina-lifetime experiences does an average 17-year-old have? An average nine-yearold or 51-year-old? Sure, obtaining a license or going to a Hannah Montana concert may only happen once in your life, but are these true once-in-a-lifetime moments? I can honestly say that I have had an honest, remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. I witnessed history. We began our trip to Washington D.C. the Saturday before the inauguration, but our excitement and involvement begins much earlier than that. My family has always taken an interest in the political world. My parents attended Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993 and early last year we went to every Hillary rally that was a car ride away. Our first Obama rally was in September, followed by another less than two weeks away from the election. We went to parties on election night and have kept every issue of Newsweek since Nov. 4. Traveling to Washington for this event was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. When we arrived in the nation’s capitol, it was clear that change was in the air. Vendors on the streets were making deals and the bottom of the Washington monument was blocked by rows and rows of Port-A-Potties. One of the first powerful moments of the trip

occurred in the History of the Presidents room at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Starting with George Washington, portraits of the past Presidents spanned almost an entire wall. I stopped to look at the end of the wall. Staring me in the face was then President-elect Barack Obama with a number 44 directly under his portrait. Although we have all known since Nov. 4, something about this made everything — the experience of the being there and the actual idea that in less than 48 hours Barack Obama would be the President — more real. That night, we decided to have dinner on DuPont Circle. It may have been one of the best decisions of our life because what happened next altered not only the course of our trip, but also the way I saw my country. While waiting more than an hour for a table, my mom sat next to a woman named Helen. She was in Washington on business from New Zealand. She worked for a major corporation and traveled all over the world. We all enjoyed talking to her so much that we invited her to join us for dinner. With all of the interesting stories she told us about her homeland, everything from the Kiwi being the national bird to a summer break in December, one small anecdote struck me as the most fascinating. It was election night, and about 5 p.m. on Wednesday in New Zealand. While my family and I gathered around to find out the future of the next four years, Helen was doing the same thing. She attended an election-watch party, just as I did, except it was thousands

TEEN TALK and thousands of miles away. She told me about the bets everyone placed and the buttons her children wore to school the next day. A story like this from California or Montana may not have been so surprising. Then, Helen said something to us that I had never thought about. She told me that America and our actions affect the rest of the world more than we could possibly think. She was waiting for the past eight years to end in the same way that my family has. This really opened my eyes, not only to the significance of our country to the world, but to the significance of this event to the history of the world. We spent the rest of the trip leading up to the Inauguration doing various things, including attending the concert at the Lincoln Memorial and meeting local Congresspersons, to stocking up on sweatshirts from PoliticalAmericana. Before we knew it, it was 5:45 in the morning and we were meeting friends in the lobby of our hotel ready to witness history. The journey there was strenuous, and the air was colder than my family and I would have liked. After two hours on the Metro and another three or so in line, it was almost 11 a.m. and we were in. Our blue tickets got us through the gate, but by the time we entered the assigned standing area, it had reached capacity. After a thousand miles and hours of

standing, there was no way we were giving up now. So, my mom did what any mother of three boys would do; she improvised. Almost as if it was waiting for us, a scaffold big enough to hold my brothers and I sat alone, close by a cluster of Port-a-Potties. We all quickly climbed up and were able to see, with only a few minutes left before Aretha Franklin took the stage. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, Joseph Biden became the 47th Vice President. It was the first of many moments I would not forget that day. As I flashed between the huge screen and the tiny speck that was Mr. Obama, I witnessed at exactly 12 Noon the swearing in of the nation’s 44th President, the once-in-a-lifetime moment out of a day filled with once-ina-lifetime moments. Despite the cold, the lack of sanitary bathrooms and the back pains that came from hours and hours of standing up, this was without a doubt, the best day of my life. Although I couldn’t vote, I cared more about this election than any other American event in my (or this country’s) young history. This short trip to our nation’s capitol allowed my family to share an unforgettable bond that we will never forget.

Every pet owner can tell you that caring for an animal is a lot of r e s p o n s i b i l i t y. And even those who are the most cautious sometimes forget one crucial step to ensuring their pet’s safety — identification. A large part of the reason we have so many animals in our shelters is that the pet does not have proper identification and therefore cannot be returned to its owner. This problem could easily be solved if every pet owner took the time to set up his or her pet with proper identification. There are several options when it comes to pet IDs including collar tags, microchips and even tattoos. The most basic way to identify a dog is with collar tags. Collar identification tags are available through a wide variety of sources including wherever pet products are sold. What’s great about collar tags is that they range in color, shape and size so that there’s something to fit every owner’s budget and every pet’s personality. However, be sure to check these tags regularly for readability. Sometimes even though tags are engraved, they can become worn out and hard to read. Another well-known method to maximize your pet’s identification is with a microchip. Microchips are tiny chips that are inserted under the animal’s skin usually between the shoulder blades. When an animal is lost, veterinarians or shelters will scan the animal for a microchip. The scan produces an identification code, which is then called in to the microchip company and used to trace the owner’s information. It’s not uncommon to adopt a new pet that already has a microchip, as many breeders and adoption organizations provide this service. For example, Paws4You

Paws4You mails in the new registration of their adopted animals as a courtesy for the new owners. Pet owners might also choose to use a tattoo system to ID their pets. Although not as popular as collar tags and microchips, tattoos can also be an efficient approach to identification. Similar to microchips, tattooed identification codes help locate owners. The codes are tattooed onto the animal in areas with little hair, such as the inside of an ear or abdomen. Regardless of what identification method you use, it is crucial to make sure that your pet has at least one form of identification. And because collar tags can sometimes get misplaced, I recommend using either the microchip or tattoo method as a back up. And please keep all information current (change of address, for example) because many animals end up at shelters with outdated info that cannot be traced back to the families. If you have questions about your pet’s identification or another pet issue, you can visit Paws4You Rescue at the Colonial Palms PetSmart, 13621 S. Dixie Hwy. every Sunday (except holidays) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or visit our website at www.paws4you.org for more information. PET OF THE WEEK Rosie is a Foxhound mix only 2 years old and 55 pounds. Despite the downturn in the economy and tough housing market, older adults continue to be interested in Senior Living Communities. At The Palace Management Group, one of South Florida’s leading companies specializing in senior housing and care, the marketing team has noted an increase of inquiries from potential residents and their families. “Although seniors may be thinking twice about selling their homes, the benefits of living in a Senior Living Community far outweigh remaining in the home,” said Helen Shaham, President of The Palace. “We encourage them to make the move now, rather than later.” According to Shaham, Senior Living Communities such as The Palace are often viewed as a luxury instead of a necessity; however, seniors can enjoy a care-free lifestyle for an amount comparable or even lower than their current monthly expenses. “The reality is that The Palace is not that expensive when compared to the expenses we were incurring to maintain mom’s home,” said Michael Backer, whose mother Martha, has been living at The Palace Royale for six years. “The mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, home & lawn maintenance, security, laundry, housekeeping, food, car expenses, occasional entertainment, and everything else…before even mentioning personal care & medical supervision… it all adds up very quickly. Additionally, The Palace provides so much more than we could have ever done in our home. And they provide one more important thing that we could never provide – socialization. And that’s huge!!!” Often, the largest asset a senior has is their equity in their home and they may be reluctant to sell in a flat or a declining market. Shaham and her team have been encouraging seniors to have realistic expectations about the value of their real estate. “While they may not be able to sell a home for the price it was last year, it’s important to keep in mind that most seniors bought their homes decades ago and may still have a considerable amount of equity in the real estate,” she explained. “Accepting today’s price may still offer enough money to make a move financially feasible.” Today, seniors wishing to begin a carefree lifestyle in a Senior Living Community are finding new, creative ways to overcome the obstacle of selling their homes. Some have turned to ‘repurposing’ the home, allowing a family member such as a grandchild who recently graduated from college, to rent the home. The Palace also recommends securing the services of a Realtor who routinely works with seniors. A Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) specializes in the needs of maturing Americans and has the knowledge and expertise to counsel seniors through major lifestyle transitions. “We’ve looked at the housing market here in South Florida, and we understand the seniors’ apprehension,” said Shaham. “So we came up with our own program, a new “Security Agreement” program which allows

us to better respond to our customers’ needs.” Under this agreement, prospective residents can move to The Palace paying only a discounted monthly rate (whatever they can afford without selling the home) while they await the pending sale of their home. Once the home is sold, The Palace is reimbursed the accrued rental difference with minimal interest fee. “There has been very positive feedback about the program, as our seniors understand the benefits of living in one of our Senior Living Communities and are anxious to begin enjoying this lifestyle sooner rather than later,” said Shaham. “Families have found that under certain circumstances the vacated home (without all the accumulated personal property of the seniors) has more appeal to buyers, which in turn speeds up the selling process. In fact, a family who recently took advantage of our Security Agreement program was able to sell their home in Aventura’s Mystic Point within a month. It’s a win-win for all parties.” Another way to get to use your equity is a “reverse mortgage” which has been advertised by many banks recently. The Palace has also received an increase in calls from residents and their families who initially thought “Aging in Place” in the senior’s own home was the perfect solution to the current real estate market situation, but now realize that that was not the answer. “Aging in Place” carries with it lots of small “details” that until you encounter them, you won’t be able to anticipate them… One of these “details” is necessary home renovations which can be both financially and mentally overwhelming for seniors. What may begin as the installation of a grab bar in the shower can easily turn into the widening of doorways or the lowering of the kitchen counter to accommodate a wheel chair. And if the senior’s home have stairs…well, let’s not go there…Let’s face reality,” says Shaham. “While younger people can wait to see what the future will bring, even if this future may be a few years down the road…Seniors do not have this luxury of waiting. Seniors owe it to themselves to take advantage of the benefits of a senior living community today— tomorrow is not guaranteed. The peace of mind, comfort, care and security offered at Senior Living Communities are immeasurable and cannot be compared to anything else.” The Palace’s Continuum of Care in Kendall includes The Palace Suites Independent Living Community; The Palace Renaissance & Royale Assisted Living Communities and The Palace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. It also includes The Palace Gardens - Assisted Living Community in Homestead; Homestead Manor Nursing Home and The Palace @ Home, a MedicareCertified Home Health Agency. Recently two new projects were added: The Palace at Weston – luxury living for those 55 and over, and The Palace Tel-Aviv, a Continuing Care retirement community in Israel. And currently there are two communities under development – The Palace at Weston Senior Living and The Palace at Coral Gables. Why diets don’t work BY PATRECE FRISBEE Dieting is one of those things that is completely integrated into American culture. On any given day, a huge portion of United States population is “on a diet” and “counting calories” in one way or another. We are constantly being bombarded by confusing nutritional advice. How many names in this list do you recognize — Slim Fast, Atkins, Sugar Buster’s, Carbohydrate Addicts, Cabbage Soup, Subway? No, they’re not the latest hits, but they do sing a tune we would all like to play — weight loss and total wellness. Americans spend $33 billion on diet books, pills and weight-loss programs each year. And the number of new fads to choose from continues to grow, along with our nation’s waistline. A survey was done recently to determine if any commercial diet program could prove longterm success. No single program could do so. So rampant has the so-called diet industry become with new products and false claims that the FDA has now stepped in. So what works? Which diets are safe, effective and sustainable? The answer lies in the science. Science says diets don’t work! A diet is something you go on and something you go off. A diet creates a temporary deficit. After all, anybody who goes on a diet can lose 10 or 20 pounds and many of us have — over and over again. But once you go off the diet you gain most of the weight back and usually even more. It is important to note, however, that weight loss is not the same as weight maintenance. It’s only by maintaining that weight loss that derives real, lasting benefits.

In attempting to create a-one-diet-fitsall, we have lost our uniqueness. By focusing so strongly on the idea that one diet will provide all the necessary nutrients for everybody, we have completely ignored one very important thing. Each one of us is different, from the color of our eyes, hair and skin to the shape of our bodies; from our different ages and gender to the ease or difficulty in losing weight. Some of us have various physical limitations and inherited tendencies that can result in high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes all which can be aggravated by the wrong nutritional lifestyle. Each of us is unique. Each of us has our own likes and dislikes, different types of jobs and lifestyles. Metabolically speaking we are not created equal. Men can lose body fat quicker than women even when they both engage in the same amount of moderate exercise and watch their nutritional intake. The male body is made up of more muscle and lean body tissue. The more muscle we have, the easier it is to burn fat. Where as the female body, due to the female hormones such as estrogen, has a greater buildup of body fat. And what happened to the simple joys in eating. We’ve lost the sensuous pleasures of aroma, texture and taste. Unfortunately, what has become almost extinct, is the art of breaking bread with family and friends. So what works? If our grandmothers only new they had the secret to a multibillion dollar industry. Scientists and researchers have spent millions of dollars to come to the conclusion what our grandmothers knew all along. The only thing that works, experts agree, is getting back to the basics with a balanced nutritional lifestyle. Lets’ take a look at the striking similarities between our grandmothers’ advice and today’s research.

Curbside Florist & Gifts Your Florist for All Occasions Business, Birthdays, Holidays, Weddings, Funerals, Anniversaries & Parties and Gourmet Baskets

GRANDMOTHER’S WISDOM IS WHAT RESEARCHERS ARE SAYING Eat a balanced meal. Balance your lean proteins, complex carbs and monounsaturated fats to balance your blood sugar which in turn uses stored body fat for energy. Eat your fr uits and veggies. Eat nutrient dense, low glycemic carbs. High glycemic carbs raise insulin — which is a fat storage hormone. Eat meat. Protein promotes cell growth and repair. It also releases glucagon which uses stored body fat for energy. Eat your breakfast. Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism and sets your energy for the rest of the day. Take fish oil. Good fats are beneficial to good health. Don’t eat too much. Decrease caloric intake to lose weight and live longer. Ever ything in moderation. The American Heart Association and

the AMA agree that the most sensible approach to weight loss is a balanced nutritional lifestyle. Get outside and exercise. Thirty minutes of aerobic and anaerobic exercise a day is great for your waist and total wellness. If only we had listened. Maybe, we would be the fittest nation instead of the fattest. It’s not too late. Research indicates that as much as 70 percent of all chronic diseases in the United States — from high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity to diabetes and even some cancers — can be warded off by adopting a healthy balanced nutritional lifestyle. Have a wellness issue? Send your questions to <Dr. Patrece Frisbee@sobewell@aol.com>.

Chevy Tahoe Hybrid gets 50% better gas mileage Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Still looking for a big SUV that delivers pretty good gas mileage? Check out the new 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. Two-wheel-drive Tahoe Hybrid models get 21 mpg in city driving, a whopping 50percent improvement over a gasolineonly Tahoe. Highway driving gas mileage stats are better, too, but not quite as impressive at 22 mpg. The Tahoe Hybrid looks a lot like the gasoline-only Tahoe models. It seats eight adults comfortably and 2WD models tow up to 6,200 pounds and haul as much as 12,000 pounds, about the same as nonhybrid SUVs in the class. However, there are subtle enhancements to the Hybrid Tahoe that allow for the improved fuel economy numbers. The state-of-the-art hybrid system is the big difference, along with GM’s all-new Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT).

GM’s advanced EVT and 300-volt nickelmetal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS) work in concert with the standard six-liter V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. The hybrid system allows the Tahoe to travel up to 30 mph on battery power alone, excellent for stop-and-go city driving. The technology also lets the big V-8 engine to shut down four cylinders and operate in a V-4 mode for longer periods. Chevy also provides some standard equipment to help you drive efficiently. For example, an economy gauge on the dashboard instrument cluster tells you when you’re driving in the gasoline or electric modes. And, whenever the gasoline engine shuts down, the tachometer needle points to the Auto Stop mark, alerting you that the Tahoe is being powered only by electricity. While the Tahoe Hybrid looks a lot like the gas-powered Tahoe, there are subtle design differences and numerous hidden changes. For example, the Hybrid has a slightly larger front grille opening and a lower air dam helps redirect airflow from underneath the vehicle to reduce drag. Also, there are no fog lamp and tow hook

openings, and the roof rack side rails have been eliminated and an extended rear spoiler added for a clean aerodynamic look. To reduce curb weight, an aluminum front bumper beam, hood and liftgate replace the standard steel units, along with 18-inch cast aluminum wheels. On the inside, special lightweight front seats are used. Even more weight was eliminated by adding a tire inflator kit to replace the spare wheel and tire, jack and tools found on gasoline-only models. Tahoe Hybrid also comes with OnStar

Understanding the organs that purify your body BY DR. JUNE GENTLE You can start on a road to a healthier mind, body and spirit, and heal from the inside out, by understanding the cleansing organs that purify your body. Can you name a few of these organs? • Liver — filters toxins and actually transforms many of these into harmless agents, while breaking down fats, proteins and carbohydrates. • Kidneys — necessary for balancing sodium (Na), potassium (K) and phosphorous; filters waste and excess fluids from the blood. • Small intestines — act as a barrier that only allows certain nutrients to be absorbed directly into the blood stream, which then travel to the liver. • Large intestines — absorb water and electrolytes, produce antibiotics for the health of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, contain normal bacteria called “normal flora” that help create fatty acids and vitamins such as vitamin B, and form waste that is then excreted. On a 24/7 basis, your body eliminates toxins such as herbicides, caffeine, heavy metals and chemicals. So it is important that these and all of your organs are functioning at a 100 percent. Otherwise the toxins will remain in your blood stream for longer periods. This can

HEALTH TIPS cause fatigue, weight gain and disease. By properly feeding and purifying your body with unprocessed and whole foods, you will be in control of your body and your weight. Your program should include supplements of whole foods and botanicals to balance the GI tract to encourage liver and kidney function and promote elimination. A protein shake full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals can be mixed with fruits and vegetables to replace a meal during your day. A supplement that promotes a healthy gut to enhance the growth of normal necessary bacteria and a supplement of phytonutrients such as alfalfa, buckwheat, barley grass, Brussels sprouts and kale helps fight against free radicals. To completely balance your body and put it into homeostasis take an amino acid supplement that is crystallized. Also remember to get adjusted. If you have any questions or would like more information about a cleansing program, visit my website at <www.chiropractormaimi.com>.

Fab Four concert to highlight JCC special needs fundraiser Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS Last month marked the 45th anniversary of the Beatles American debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. I didn’t get to watch it, because it was after my bedtime. I was nine-years-old. My earliest recollection of the Beatles was a bit unconventional. The teenager down the street was selling Beatles brooches. They were really beetles brooches. She collected real insects, lacquered them with what was probably clear nail polish, glued them to a pin and painted some combination of the names John, Paul, George and Ringo on their backs in red. I would tell you I was grossed out, but that expression didn’t become popular until the next decade. Obviously, the image is burned into my memory. By the time music seriously appeared on my horizon, the Beatles were into

their Magical Mystery Tour, but somehow I can sing along to any of their early hits with the best of them. “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks as though they’re here to stay…” Unfortunately, the words are still timely. Fast forward two decades and my son is playing Tiffany’s 1988 re-release of I Saw Him Standing There non-stop. The words are backwards, I insist. It’s I Saw Her Standing There. “It’s really a Beatles song, dear,” I explain. “It’s not about bugs,” he responds. When The Beatles break-up was officially announced on April 10, 1970, I was still in 10th grade. I have always been disappointed that I never got to see the Beatles in concert. But now I am going to do the next best thing. I am going to see the Fab Four, the amazing Beatles tribute band, live in concert at the Dave and Mary Alper JCC 13th annual Special Needs fundraising event on Saturday, March 7. If last year’s Second City appearance at the 12th fundraiser is any indication, it is going to be a great evening. The save the date card was a bit corny, but it said it all: “After A Hard Day’s Night, Come Together for the Shirley and Chester Paul Special Needs 13th annual fundraiser.

“The Fab Four” –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

These events don’t happen Eight Days a Week, so Help us go down The Long and Winding Road as we remember those Beatle songs with The Fab Four and With a little Help from My Friends.” Guests will warm up for the show with cocktails and a silent auction at 7 p.m. and a gourmet dessert reception immediately follows the 8 p.m. performance. Proceeds benefit the Chester and Shirley Paul JCC Special Needs Program which offers fun, stimulating and dynamic programs for children, teens and adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Activities include the Tikvah summer camp, a teen club, winter and spring mini-camps and no-school holidays. The Fab Four takes the audience on a magical tour that begins with early Beatles selections from the Ed Sullivan days, then on to the colorful psychedelic world of Sgt. Pepper, and finally the thought provoking era of Abbey Road. Precise attention to detail elevates the Fab Four far above every other Beatles tribute band. With uncanny, note-perfect live renditions of Beatles’ songs, the Fab Four makes you think you’re watching the real thing. A typical show starts with a Beatles video and introduction by an Ed Sullivan impersonator. The curtain parts to reveal the band in authentic collarless jackets and pointed black boots. The Fab Four cover the music chronologically with costumes representing every era of the Beatles’ ever-changing career: Beatlemania from1963 to1966, the brightly colored uniforms of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band represent the psychedelic era from 1966 to1967 and finally the mismatched garb of the final years takes the audience

through the Vietnam War and Beatles breakup era from 1967 to1970. Using the same kind of equipment and instruments the Beatles used, and no tapes, backing tracks or sequences, the Fab Four recreates the authentic sound that was synonymous with the British invasion. Throughout the evening the group chats with each other and the audience in between songs just as the Beatles did, mimicking their every mannerism. The show includes the classics Can’t Buy Me Love, Yesterday, A Day in the Life, Penny Lane, Here Comes the Sun, and Hey Jude. Formed in 1998 by Ron McNeil and Ardy Sarraf (Paul), The Fab Four are seasoned veterans in the tribute game. McNeil, Sarraf, Michael Amador (George) and Rolo Sandoval (Ringo) have been performing together as the Beatles for almost a decade. By the way, highlights of the silent auction include SeaWorld tickets, a threeday, two-night stay at Hotel St. Michel, a basketball autographed by the 2009 Miami Heat, a round of golf for four at the Biltmore Golf Course, a Prada bag from Capretto Shoes, an exotic orchid arrangement from R.F. Orchids, champagne brunch for two at the Rusty Pelican, dining certificates to area restaurants and much more. The gourmet dessert reception features treats from chef David Schwadron, Catering and Event Design, Fare to Remember Creative Catering, Cold Stone Creamery, Cupcake Diva, Lynn Katzen and many others. For ticket information, to become a sponsor or to donate a silent auction item, contact Johana Sarmiento at 305271-9000, ext. 238, or <jsarmiento@alperjcc.org>.
