inecrest police kept criminals in check in 2008 in spite of a mass exodus of personnel early in the year that required an urgent effort to rebuild the department staff. According to the police department’s annual report released last week, crime held steady in the Village in 2008, though the number of robberies increased and the number of vehicles stolen rose dramatically.” “Remarkably, we had the exact same number of Part I Crimes as the previous year and that was 820 incidents,” Chief John Hohensee said Police Chief

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of Pinecrest for placing their trust in me to be your mayor. This election provided those of us who ran with an opportunity to engage in dialogue with literally thousands of residents over many months about the quality of life in our village. Voter turnout was high, signaling keen interest in the presidential and all down-ballot races. Voting is but one of the opportunities to be civically engaged. But it shouldn’t stop there. My platform is one that relies on interested residents to continue to have a say, to participate in decision making and to join in determining the vision for pinecrest in five, 10 and 20 years. And beyond that to build on the assets we have to create an even stronger sense of community. That is where I ask each of you to join me, in extending yourselves to your neighbors, in building stronger networks through communication, and programs that will build and enrich each of us. There is much promise for Pinecrest, and it is based in its residents. The promise is to create a true sense of community, of bonds to each other and to this place, and the people who work to provide the public services and public safety. It is there within our reach and I know that by making those connections, by opening dialogue and involving you all in decision making, in creating a shared vision of where we will go from here, those bonds will be strong. We have an incredibly ener-

Charting the county’s future through the Strategic Plan George M. Burgess MIAMI-DADE COUNTY MANAGER
COUNTY REPORT Managing an organization of MiamiDade County’s range and scale can be a daunting task and it’s important to ensure that its chosen course is in line with the demands of the community it serves. How do we steer the ship? How do we stay on course to meet the community’s needs? The answer is Miami-Dade County’s Strategic Plan. It’s our map, describing what matters, where we want to go and how we’ll get there. It gives your county government departments collective focus. Since its inception in 2003, the plan has served as the framework for departmental business plans, streamlined resource allocation, improved accountability and effective collaboration.
Over the past few months, employees across the organization have been reexamining the county’s Strategic Plan reviewing priorities, goals and strategies to make sure that they still reflect the needs of our dynamic community — your needs. The update of the Strategic Plan began in October with department leaders convening to provide an initial round of suggestions. At that juncture, outdated goals were eliminated and new goals and opportunities were identified. Together with the county’s ongoing customer feedback initiative — using surveys, focus groups and public interactive forums, as well as input from our elected officials and other community leaders — the team is in the process of assessing what matters most to the residents who live and work in Miami-Dade County. You can read the existing plan online at <www.miamidade.gov/stratplan>. While you are there, it’s not too late to share your insights about where we should go next by filling out the online feedback form.

JON HERSKOWITZ Attorney Jon Herskowitz is not only a top-notch lawyer, he’s also a top-notch father. Herskowitz carves out the time in his busy schedule to devote to coaching his children in baseball and softball in the Howard Palmetto Baseball Softball Association. “Currently I am managing Atom I American, my son Ryan’s team, and Softball II, my daughter Carly’s team,” Herskowitz says. “This is my first year of managing a baseball team, but my third year in softball. We’ve been the softball champs for two years in a row.” In order to coach his children, Herskowitz begins his business day at 6:30 a.m. in order to give him the freedom of being able to leave the office early enough for practice, which begins at 4:30 p.m. If he’s not scheduled to coach his son’s baseball practice, he will watch his younger daughter Katie’s T-Ball practice. He says that it is very important for him to watch his children grow up. “I think people sometimes get buried in their work and don’t get the experience of watching their kids grow up,” he says. “I think you have to have your priorities. I’m one of those who want to do it all. I want to be successful and I try to get that balance. I do think that I have a lot of balance in my life.” Herskowitz says his father taught him the importance of being there when your kids are young.
“He coached me all the way through baseball,” he says. Herskowitz grew up playing in the Howard Palmetto league when it was still the Khoury League. He also played second base and shortstop on the Palmetto High School baseball team. Now he’s a weekend warrior who lives in Pinecrest with his wife Laura and his children. His office is close to home at the Datran Center. “I’m a practicing lawyer in the community,” he says. Herskowitz is a partner in the firm Baron and Herskowitz, which has been in business for a year. Partner David Baron has been an attorney for 30 years and Herskowitz has been practicing for 20. Herskowitz practiced with his father from 1994 until just a couple of years ago. “I was on the 14th floor for many years, then on the 10th floor for a year, and now the penthouse,” he says, adding that his practice includes personal injury and medical malpractice cases. Herskowitz was named a Super Lawyer by Florida Super Lawyers Magazine. The magazine chooses the list of attorneys to help attorneys and consumers who need legal counsel. The selection process includes a survey of attorneys who are asked to nominate the best attorneys they have seen in action. When the list of candidates is compiled, they evaluate the attorneys in the pool. The third step includes peer evaluation and those with the highest point totals in their areas of specialization are selected. Only five percent of the total lawyers in the state make the list. Herskowitz has also been chosen as a Legal Elite by Florida Trend Magazine. “For Florida Trend, you are selected by your peers,” he says. “They send it to all the lawyers in the Florida Bar. Two to five percent are selected.” After law school, he worked for Janet Reno as a prosecutor at the State Attorney’s office before going into private practice with his dad. “I loved the trial practice,” he says. “And I love the civil practice.” Before he decided to devote his time to coaching his kids, Herskowitz was a wish granter for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He would meet with children who qualified for a wish and then find a way to make that wish come true. “It was very rewarding,” he says. “I wish I could still do it.”

LEAH SAUNDERS Palmetto High School junior Leah Saunders is back in school this year after being forced into home schooling for a year because of ulcerative colitis. “It’s a disease that causes inflammation, internal bleeding and severe pain,” Saunders says. “I battled the disease for five-and-a-half years. I inherited it from my mom, who has been in remission for 20 years. Mine is just a worse case.” Saunders’ condition would go into remission for short periods, but she would have to go to the hospital every eight weeks to receive a powerful drug that would, in turn, make her ill. “It did work for a short period of time, but I never went into full remission,” she says. Then things got worse. “My body started shutting down around January,” she says. “Feb. 11, 2008, four days after my grandpa passed away, I had one of three surgeries. During one of them, they removed my colon. I woke up and I was like a new person. During this time last year, I was home schooled.” In April, she had the second surgery and in July, she had the third. “I’m still having complications from the surgery but I am a normal person,” she says. “I’m back in school.” When she was in the eighth grade, Saunders missed 45 days of school because of her illness. She was able to
graduate from middle school and go on to the ninth grade because her twin sister, Rebecca, would bring her work home and Leah was able to catch up on her studies. In spite of her battle with colitis, Saunders has become an artist. While she was being home schooled, she took private art classes. “I discovered that I had an ability for art,” she says. One of her artwork pieces was selected for display at the University of Miami in the art gallery. She is now working on an art project featuring powerful women, including Maya Angelou, Nancy Pelsoi, Hillary Clinton, Mother Teresa and Jane Goodall. Saunders has also studied voice and took piano lessons for 10 years. Because of her battle with ulcerative colitis, Saunders mentors a young girl who also has the disease. She also gives motivational talks to other children with similar medical problems. In the past, at times when she wasn’t sick, Saunders worked at the Beth Am Sunday school as a teacher’s helper. “I love it and I hope to get back to it next year,” she says. Saunders also sang in the choir for the High Holy Days. In that regard, she takes after her mother, Beth Am Cantor Rachelle Nelson. Even with her illness, Saunders already has accumulated between 300 and 400 hours of community service. This year, Saunders is in the National Honor Art Society and is a member of the Red Cross Club. Each year, when she visits her aunt in the Hamptons, Saunders volunteers at Art in the Hamptons, a shelter for abused and abandoned animals waiting to be adopted. She’s says she is looking forward to going to college and already knows what she wants course of study she wants to pursue. “I plan to major in music and minor in art therapy,” she says. Her list of potential schools includes Florida State University and the University of Miami. Both she and her sister plan to tour Florida colleges and universities during spring break.

REBECCA SAUNDERS Rebecca Saunders is very involved in school. Saunders, a junior at Palmetto High, is a top student and a member or officer in several clubs.
As treasurer of the Red Cross Club, Saunders helped one family enjoy a happy holiday season. She sent out an email to the Beth Am congregation and they were able to raise more than 100 gifts for the family. She’s also a member of the Science National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society and the Donate Life Club. With the Science National Honor Society, Saunders visits area elementary schools to work on shows about science and teach the children about science experiments. She’s also a member of Friendship Circle sponsored by the Chabad of Kendall. “My friends and I were assigned to a little child who has cancer,” Saunders says. “She’s been like a miracle. We go every Tuesday and we play with her. We cook with her and we swim with her. She’s just a great girl.” Saunders says the child was given a limited time to live, but that she has far exceeded that time span. “Right now, she’s okay,” Saunders says. “Her hair has grown back and everything.”
She says that she loves visiting with the girl. “Every time I leave, I feel so good,” she says. “I help her with her homework. We did art projects with her. We made stepping stones with her handprints on them. So, her parents will always have her handprints.” Currently, Saunders has about 500 hours in community service. Along with her twin, Leah, Saunders has been helping out at the Beth Am Sunday school for many years. “I have this one group of kids I’ve had for the past three years now,” she says. “I teach them all about Judaism and I teach them all the prayers. On Monday nights, I go back to the temple and help out at the Monday night school.” Saunders has been playing piano for about 10 years and she continues to take lessons each week. She also plays the flute, though she stopped taking lessons. While she loves music, her dream is to become a doctor. “I think I want to go to medical school,” she says, adding that she has always loved science and math. Because her sister has been so sick with ulcerative colitis for so many years,
Saunders has been around many doctors. “Her disease really fascinated me,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, ever since I was a little girl.” Living with her sister’s disease was tough on her, but she did all she could to help Leah. “So that she wouldn’t get so behind in school, every week I would go over all her work and teach her math,” she says. “I would teach her everything she missed.” And when her parents were not home, she would take care of Leah. However, that’s not to say she didn’t have time to do the things she wanted to do. Each January she played basketball in the Beth Am League. And each summer since she was eight years old, she has gone to Camp Coleman, a Jewish sleep away camp. “The last year I went was two years ago,” she says. “Last summer all my friends traveled to Israel for four weeks.” When the time comes to go away to college, Saunders hopes to choose from such schools as the University of Florida, Brandeis University or Columbia.

John Hohensee. “We saw reductions in burglaries, larcenies and aggravated assaults, but the number of robberies increased by five incidents and car theft was up significantly.” In 2008, there were no homicides and two reported sex offenses, the same number as in 2007. Robbery increased to 22 incidents, up from 17, while aggravated assault dropped to nine
reported incidents from 27 the previous year. There were 84 burglaries, down from 86; 655 larcenies, down from 658; and no cases of arson, the same as in 2007. However, there were 48 vehicles stolen in the Village last year, a jump from 30 the previous year. “The reason for the increase in car thefts could be the economy,” said Hohensee. “Cars being stolen for criminal enterprises because people are no longer in legitimate jobs.” At the same time, Hohensee said he was pleased with the relatively low num-

ber of overall criminal incidents in Pinecrest. “If you look at the eight years of history shown in the report, we have been right around the 800 number for Part I Crimes in most of the years, with the exception of 2006,” he said. “So our fluctuations, relatively speaking, are not dramatic. I’ve always thought that less than 1,000 Part I Crimes in a community the size and affluence of Pinecrest is remarkable in and of itself. “Make no mistake, this is an attractive area for people intent on committing crime and I think we’re fortunate that
it’s not any worse than what it is.” Looking back on the year, Hohensee maintained that the greatest difficulty his department overcame in 2008 was rebuilding the staff with good, competent police officers after many departed in the first quarter of the year for better pay and benefits with the new City of Doral. “We were able to recover from the loss of 29 employees,” he said. “We were able to very quickly recruit and hire some outstanding candidates, and recover from that exodus by the third quarter.”

Students must learn to manage their money BY KARA BISCEGLIA Making the transition from a high school student to a college student can be confusing. There are a lot of changes and many new responsibilities. Adapting to college is full of life lessons and the biggest lesson involves handling money. When teens live at home, there are many financial decisions that they never have to make. Parents worry about how much to spend on housing, food, bills, clothes and entertainment. These things never have to cross the high school student’s mind. In college, teens suddenly have to handle these things on their own and if they spend money recklessly they will find themselves quickly tapped. There are smart money saving tactics that can make a major impact on rising freshman’s finances and future. There are simple tips and ideas to help students along the way with their money. Students should know the cost of their lifestyle. One thing that I have done that can really help other freshman is make a list of all mandatory monthly expenses to understand where all the money goes. Things like groceries, utilities, school supplies and student or activity fees. Once you know where your money has to go each month, you will then be able to set up a discretionary fund and a savings plan. Another tip I have found extremely helpful was to give myself an allowance. This may come in handy for many freshmen. Giving yourself an allowance for things like entertainment, eating out, clothing and special events allows you to stay on budget. And try to save some money. Even if it is just $20 a week, try to put some money aside in a savings account. Putting away money now may not seem like a huge deal, but a little here and there is helpful. Kate Seguin from the Virginia Cavalier Daily says it’s never too soon to learn the basics of navigating your per-
COLLEGE LIFE sonal finances. Giving yourself an allowance can make you more frugal with your money. It gives you creative, new ways to look at money. You may start carpooling, bring a lunch from home or even buy your textbooks second hand, if possible. The best way to take charge of your money as a college student is to have a plan for it. Instead of thinking about money as just something to spend, think about making your money work for you. Major steps to controlling your own finances would be defining your financial goals, making plans to reach your goals and take action until your goals become reality. It is important to know what you can expect of your parents too. Once you know which expenses will be your responsibility you’ll have a better idea of the time, effort and resourcefulness that will be required of you. A story in the Daily Mississippian claims that the best way to ensure that you will always have adequate funds is simply don’t spend more than you have. This advice may seem obvious, but many college students have fallen victim to credit cards. Too many students with credit cards are tempted to making purchases with money they don’t actually have. Most college students have a checking account and debit card. You should make sure that every time you use your bank account for debit or deposit, keep a record. Keeping a record will prevent overdraft fees and give you an idea of how much money will be left to spend for other things. Do not put off financial planning. Time is money.
Kara Bisceglia is a Palmetto High School graduate and now attends the University of Central Florida where she is majoring in Radio and Television.

getic, bright and creative population and I know we can tap into these resources to build an even better community for us all. We will, in this new era of partnership with our residents, invigorate our schools, businesses, Community Center and Pinecrest Gardens by involving you in the future planning and programming. It’s going to be all about customer satisfaction and exceeding your expectations. Your new council and I appreciate that we have been handed a village in solid fiscal condition, with a healthy reserve fund, having had several major capital projects completed over the past four years. I thank former Mayor Gary Matzner and Councilwoman Gail Serota for their service and their commitment to the well being of the Village. WE HAVE COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING CAPITAL PROJECTS IN 2008: • Community Center – please stop by today if you haven’t been there, and get a pass for a free class or day in the fitness center, and look for our soon to be created advisory board. • Library – we are so fortunate to have a beautiful new library, but especially to have an incredible librarian. Ellen Book and her staff are amazing; please go meet them. • Pinecrest Gardens, Village Green and Vita Course. • Red Road bicycle path/sidewalk lighting — 88th Street to 111th Street. • Flagler Grove Park. • Pinecrest Gardens parking lot lighting. • Pinecrest Gardens Hibiscus Room renovation. • US-1 intersections improvements study. • Public Works Site Improvements —
CAPITAL PROJECTS BEGUN IN 2008: • Backbone public potable water system construction, 330 homes, and authorization for construction of Phase 2 of the Public Potable Water System, 120 homes. • New irrigation system for Pinecrest Gardens. OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2008: • Adoption of Pinecrest Gardens Botanical Master Plan. • Successful negotiations with police union resulting in a three-year contract, Oct. 1, 2008 to Sept. 30, 2011. • Comprehensive programming for leisure activities in the Community Center and Pinecrest Gardens. • Increased attendance to Pinecrest Gardens to 125,000 visitors from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008. I applaud the hard working Village of Pinecrest staff, a dedicated group of municipal employees, and ask you all to give them a hand for their service to us. We maintain a healthy reserve fund of $7 million, a transportation fund of $3.9 million, and a CITT Transit fund of $125,000. Yet, we also face a projected decrease in state revenues of six percent and a decrease of building permits and fees of 22 percent. Word from the property appraiser is a prediction of a double-digit reduction in assessed taxable valuation. We face continued challenges and difficult economic times ahead, and we appreciate that we must be cautious stewards of the resources we have. I am committed to assuring that our millege rate and your tax bills remain low. But as property values decline — and yes they decline even in Pinecrest — we face the potential of having to tighten our belts and determine the wisdom of any new capital projects in the current climate. If we can identify additional sources of revenue, we will seek them out. I believe that we should plan for the future with you, not for you. Whether it is transportation, transit or public works,

Your village has recruited and fully staffed our police department, a staff of 50 who are well trained, well paid and now receive the state retirement benefit program, and is committed to a threeyear contract. We all want our village to continue to be safe and secure for our homes and our children, and we can be proud of the new commitment we have to working together. The Library and Community Center add tremendous new enrichment activities and we look forward to developing many more with your input and involvement. The Gardens with the Botanic committee will be ramping up the development of an ambitious volunteer program and many more activities that provide educational and inspirational programs in an exquisite setting. The Banyan Bowl Committee appointed by my predecessor, completed its mission to investigate the potential for housing an open-air theatre to allow for musical and theatre productions, and their recommendations provide us with thrilling opportunities to develop, with private and philanthropic support, a true cultural arts center, one that will be a good neighbor to the surrounding neighborhood. I have had the privilege of being your mayor for less than 100 days and I’d like to share with you what we have been able to accomplish in that time: In our first 100 days, we have: Initiated a monthly E newsletter to the residents. If you have not signed up, please go to our website to subscribe. Held a public workshop on Jan. 27 to solicit community input on developing a transit and transportation plan. We will now convene a transit transportation advisory group to solicit more input, take that information and prioritize projects, and make recommendations. Convened an education advisory group to include 5 public schools administrations, PTA and EESAC leaders, our school board member and anyone else interested to facilitate support for our schools. Added a second meeting a month for the council and mayor to discuss in depth, have more information provided to us to determine consensus and to plan for the future. Approved the Village Council meeting being streamed live on the Internet. Sign up to subscribe to receive notice of all meetings and links. hook up for those on wells who want to keep them. We have a commitment from both commissioners Gimenez and Sorenson to assist and support us with this effort. For those who want to be connected, almost 500 more homes will have the option. Began to work closely with residents in north Pinecrest who have had chronic drainage problems. The Village manager and staff are working diligently and closely with the residents, me and the council members to make sure that we solve the problems they have had for years. The council has approved a loan of $50,000 to the community Gardens charitable fund to enable them to contract with a grant writer to apply for grants to enhance the programs and horticulture at these beautiful gardens I have signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors climate protection agreement, an initiative launched two years ago by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, committing to lead our Village’s efforts to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change. Moving forward, I am committed to identifying additional sources of revenue, helping homeowners facing loss of homes with assistance and, in those areas where a home has been abandoned, assuring these properties are maintained in good condition so we don’t diminish our neighboring property values. We are investigating several new ordinances promulgated by the county and other cities that assist in speedier efforts to regulate and assure reimbursement of costs of maintaining such properties. As your mayor and the ambassador, I will be promoting our village, representing it and dealing with other municipalities and governments, the county, the state and the federal government. This week I spoke at the Dade delegation hearings on behalf of the Children in Pinecrest, their parents and our public schools. I requested the delegation to look at the need to return the revenue streams that had been eliminated over the past decade by a legislature intent on methodically providing billions in tax cuts, placing a stranglehold on the state’s ability to fund our public schools. The tone we have set since November is inclusive, open and welcoming to all. We will be proactive, not reactive, forge coalitions and identify and prioritize goals. I am excited to be working with this council of committed residents, each one bringing talents and perspectives to the table that provide our residents with representative government that respects each other and our residents and the role we hope you will play. Please make sure you communicate with us, let us know how Pinecrest is meeting your needs and expectations, and get involved, to help us in exploring the promise in Pinecrest.

Read in The Netherlands
Pinecrest residents John and Pamela David recently visited the historic town of Delft in The Netherlands, famous for blue and white pottery of the same name. Delft is home to the Blue Heart sculpture that sits in the shadow of the New Church built in 1496 and where Dutch independence leader William of Orange is buried. Naturally, the Davids remembered to take along a copy of their favorite hometown newspaper and sent back this shot. Thanks for thinking of us, guys.

February is Heart Disease Awareness month BY DR. KEVIN COY February is Heart Disease Awareness month, making it the perfect time to make sure you are following a heart-healthy lifestyle. Despite all the treatment advances and information available to people about prevention, heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States. The good news is that the power to prevent or reduce your risk of heart disease is in your hands, and requires nothing more than a commitment to making smart lifestyle choices. The following five tips can help you get started. Stop smoking — Smoking is the leading risk factor for heart attack. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals that damage your blood vessels and heart, which cause your arteries to narrow and may eventually lead to a heart attack. The benefits from quitting smoking are immediate; your risk factors drop significantly in just one year. Star t moving — Exercising just 30 minutes a day several days a week is great for your heart. When you are physically active, the blood flow to your heart increases and your heart can pump more blood throughout your body with less effort. Exercising also has a positive impact on high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Your exercise routine can be as simple as walking briskly, gardening or even dancing. Expensive gyms or exercise equipment are not required. The important thing is to do some form of physical activity on a consistent basis and for at least 30 minutes. It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Eat well — Eating a diet full of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy products is important for keeping your heart healthy. One of the benefits of living in South Florida is the local supply of fruits and vegetable. Right now, strawberries and tomatoes are at their best and make wonderful heart healthy food options. Make a commitment in 2009 to limit how much saturated fat you eat, including fried foods, desserts, packaged snack foods and chips. These types of unhealthy foods can increase your cholesterol level and your chances of coronary artery disease. By adding more fruits and vegetables and other smart food choices, you are not only decreasing your risk for heart disease, but helping to prevent cancer
JACKSON HEALTH BEAT and other diseases as well. Keep a healthy weight — It is important to stay at a healthy weight as an adult. Any extra weight you gain later in life becomes stored as fatty tissue and this surplus of fat can lead to heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, as well as diabetes. If you started a new exercise routine earlier this year, make sure you combine it with a healthy diet to keep the weight off. Be realistic about how much weight you need to lose and how quickly you can lose it. Long-term weight loss does not happen overnight, so don’t fall for products that promise this. Eating a well-balanced diet and doing regular physical activity are the surest ways to lose weight and keep it off over time. Get a check-up — following the four steps to a healthy heart will help decrease your chances for developing heart disease. Equally important is having regular check-ups with a doctor. Miami International Cardiology Consultants (MICC), a division of Jackson Health System, is a leading cardiology practice with offices located throughout Miami-Dade County. Each office is staffed with experienced cardiologists and medical professionals specially trained in treating patients with a range of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure and high blood pressure. With the latest, state-of-the-art technology, MICC cardiologists are able to test the efficiency of a person’s heart, the amount of stress it may be under and if other heart problems exist through the use of multi-slice CT scans, stress tests, cardiac ultrasounds and other diagnostic testing. If a person has a high risk, doctors can then help make life-saving lifestyle changes to try and offset or treat problems sooner. To find out more about heart health or find a MICC office nearest you, visit the Jackson Health System web site at <www.jhsmiami.org> and click on Healthcare Services.

Library system wins National Medal for Service BY ELLEN BOOK Librarian, Pinecrest Branch Miami-Dade Public Library System What does it mean for Miami-Dade County residents to have a library system that won the 2008 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries? It means that our patrons receive Five-Star customer service and that every member of our staff is dedicated to making the patron our top priority. We are proud to create a compelling destination that meets the informational, educational and recreational needs of our community. For this effort, the MiamiDade Public Library System was selected by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, in coordination with the White House, as one of five libraries to win the nation’s highest honor for institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. In addition to the National Medal, presented to library director Raymond Santiago by former First Lady Laura Bush, the library system received a $10,000 check. The library system was awarded the National Medal for its implementation of a Five-Star customer service commitment, the Art of Storytelling (AOS), an innovative outreach program comprised of an international library-to-library exchange, storytelling seminars and an international festival day; and SMART, a science, math and reading tutoring program that pairs students 5-18 years old with trained teachers who provide free tutoring assistance with a single assignment, or to overcome multiple schoolwork issues. MORE ABOUT SMART The Pinecrest library branch, along with the other 46 branches, offers students in kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to receive free tutoring. Tutoring is available in the areas of math, reading and science. Students must bring textbooks or written assignments or projects that they have questions about. Children are assigned a maximum onehour block of tutoring time weekly. During this one-hour session, the tutor may assist up to five students in a small group setting. Placement at each library is on a first-come, first-served basis and students must be able to follow directions

and work independently. The program runs from October to May each year. AOS WORKSHOP AND INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL AOS is the Library System’s signature event. Now in its ninth year, the event promotes a partnership with a library from another country to share the historical and cultural highlights of that country as seen through its literature, folklore and art. This year’s international exchange partner is the Toronto Public Library. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 2, when the main library in downtown Miami will be transformed into a global village, with storytellers, giant puppet shows, music, dance, face painting and more. Look for more information in the coming months for the Pinecrest library’s mini-festival and Storytelling Under the Stars program, along with other opportunities to participate in an amazing week of festivities. HOW DO YOU GROW A READER? To inspire curiosity, spark an interest in books and hopefully raise future library devotees, we want our youngest patrons to participate in fun and interesting programs designed with their age and interests in mind. Early literacy leads to scholastic success and the Pinecrest staff demonstrates the joy of reading through stories, songs and activities for preschoolers each Tuesday at 10 a.m. and for toddlers (and their caregivers) on Friday at 10 a.m. For an evening treat, kids can wear their pajamas, bring a favorite blanket or stuffed toy and listen to bedtime stories each Thursday at 7 p.m. Check our online calendar for other special events like Paws2Read, where therapy dogs enjoy having your child read to them. Visit your local library to share in the joy of reading. For more information, stop by the Pinecrest branch at 5835 SW 111 St., visit <www.mdpls.org>, or call 305-668-4571.

McGlannan School marks 45 years of success during 2009 BY LEE STEPHENS In the mid 1950s, a 7-year-old, crushed by the classic symptoms of dyslexia, was the catalyst that sent Frances McGlannan to the Coco Plum Women’s Club Library in Coral Gables, looking for answers. Serendipity intervened when she found Dr. Samuel Orton’s original text. There in print was recognition of the unusual dyslexic symptoms observed, plus a rationale. For eight years following the discovery of Orton’s text, McGlannan continued her quest for answers through research, observation, years of tutoring at the University of Miami Reading Clinic, as well as the study of European professional journals. Her diligence resulted in the following: • The development of new multisensory teaching methods with an added associative component; • Adaptation of methods used to teach the blind and the deaf to teaching dyslexics; • Production of a linguistic curriculum, commercially unavailable at the time; • Establishment of an academically successful school with a unique scheduling system for the delivery of individualized teaching methods for each student; • Proof that multisensory techniques also can be used effectively in a group setting, and • Demonstrating that the dyslexic child can achieve success. McGlannan’s goal was to meet the needs of every child in each subject, in an ungraded program, rather than the lockstep approach of traditional education. With this goal in mind, McGlannan School was founded in 1964 by successfully adapting specific multisensory techniques and methods, previously reserved for the blind and deaf, to teach the dyslexic child. By 1966, McGlannan’s successful achievement of educating dyslexic children caught the interest of Norman Cousins, world-renowned political journalist and professor. As a result, an interview in New York City was arranged followed by a cover story in the Saturday Review focusing on the dyslexic teaching methods at McGlannan School. This soon was followed by additional articles describing the school in Time, Newsweek

During the 1980s, reflecting the ethnic diversity in Florida, emphasis was placed on disseminating information to Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Articles about dyslexia and McGlannan teaching methods appeared in Buenhogar (Spanish version of Good Housekeeping), Vanidades (similar to Vogue), and on Spanish television documentaries in South America. An in-house training program for teachers from these countries was instituted. Today, with Frances McGlannan still at its helm, McGlannan School remains in full operation as a researchbased and academically rigorous education facility. An accredited private school, McGlannan serves students from ages 6 to 14 years, possessing average through superior intellectual ability, who are challenged by dyslexia and other forms of specific language learning difficulties. The school maintains an exceptional staff of highly educated and certified instructors dedicated to academic success. Each teacher is trained and educated in the effective use of McGlannan School’s specific multisensory educational methods and strategies for use in the classroom and in the reading clinic. At McGlannan School, academics are emphasized along with respect for each child’s dignity and the enhancement of self-esteem through positive reinforcement. By individualizing the proven methods and strategies, McGlannan’s continued goal is to accommodate each child’s learning style, in order to systematically and successively approximate the academics of local prominent schools for the purpose of future mainstreaming. McGlannan School is located at 10770 SW 84 St. in Kendall. For more information visit the website at <www.mcglannanschool.com>.

When the Miami Poets Soirée sought a place to gather and talk about poetry, their first choice, nestled in a lovely park setting, was the Pinecrest Branch Library. When the land was the original Parrot Jungle, poets convened there for many years as the Parrot Jungle Poets. There was a sense of soul in the stunning vistas and it served up inspiration for the written word. They have come full circle. Their first soirée in January was a success and word is reaching the public — writers and those interested in discussing all things poetic are welcomed. The soiree is not just an evening to read poetry; it is an open house to poetic ideas. What was the genesis of the soirée? Cyndee Levy-Angulo, founding president of Miami Poets, wanted Miami to have official representation in the Florida State Poets Association, affiliated with the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. The soirée’s first members came from Juanita Wright’s Group Ten Poets critique group, a long-established serious poetry critique meeting. “As Group Ten Poets, we had already published Step into My Metaphor,” said Levy-Angulo. “I thought it would be nice to have our own section in an anthology and be an official chapter. Now we can stay focused on writing, bring in new members and move forward.” Tere Starr, poet and writer and current president of The Miami Poets, took the reins with great anticipation of having a poetry home in Miami. “I decided to establish the Miami Poets Soirée so we could share wonderful experiences and to simply celebrate poetry,” said Starr. “It would be an opportunity to network with other poets and with people who love the written word. The first meeting exceeded my dreams. We not only read our own poems and those by others, but we discussed what poetry means to us and why it is so important to our lives.” When Mayor Cindy Lerner heard about Miami Poets Soirée, she had this message for the poets: “Our beautiful new Pinecrest branch library provides our residents with an additional opportunity to expand horizons and encourage creativity. We are thrilled to welcome the Miami Poets Soiree. You will enrich our community with your creative energy; offer a chance to learn more about the art of poetry and to enjoy those who practice this fine art. I
look forward to sitting in on the Soiree.” Pinecrest library branch manager Ellen Book was glad to see a poetry presence at the library. “We are happy to host you,” she said. “We strive to host as many cultural events as possible. Poetry fits into that.” Librarian Gabriella Imbimbo heard about the meeting and decided to attend the soiree. “I was very excited just hearing that people from all walks of life were getting together for the common interest of poetry in a non-judgmental way to promote literacy,” Imbimbo said. “I was happy to be there and be part of it.” Also eager to be a part of The Miami Poets Soirée is Paul Saluk, retired scientist and businessman, and a poet. “I hope to get gems, the many layers of the world, discussions and an exchange of views,” he said. “I find it fascinating to understand the poet, not only the poems. It is a group of diverse, but excellent poets. I have no idea of their background, but to be around poets is fascinating. Irv Milowe, a psychoanalyst, professor and writer, also came to the Soirée. He was once on the Capital Hill Poetry scene. “I heard Group Ten read at the Miami Book Fair.,” he said. “It was wonderful to hear the variety. I am happy to bring my poems to them. I enjoyed it very much. What was most pleasant was how accepting everyone was.” “There are no rules,” said Tere Starr. “Anything goes as long as poetry is in the equation. Besides the Soirée, Miami Poets presents readings at a variety of venues.” Shaloma Shawmut-Lessner, a poet and member of Miami Poets summed it up. “The setting is a lovely place to be,” she said. “It is a beautiful library. The idea of having the poets meet in this setting is acquiescent to the American way of life. It is appropriate to spread a revival of poetry. It never dies; and now it lives on in the Village of Pinecrest.” Please join us for fabulous evening of poetry. Bring a favorite poem by you or a renowned poet, quotations, old volumes to show and tell; thoughts poetic, even photos of poets and poetic places you have visited. We hope to see you on the third Thursday evening of each month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for savory refreshments of both the mind and palate. For more information, send email to <Terestarr@mindspring.com> or call the Pinecrest Branch Library at 305-668-4571.

business banking I have been banking with First National Bank of South Miami for over 35 years. During that time, I have been provided not only with the highest quality of service that one might expect from their banker, but I have also been treated as though I was one of the most important customers of the bank. Whether I was a student in college, a young lawyer out of law school or a commercial real estate borrower, the treatment was always the same and it continues to be that way. FNBSM has the unique ability to remain a “hometown” community bank with easy access to its officers and employees while still providing the latest in advanced banking services, such as internet banking and remote image deposits.

Pinecrest Gardens has become a hub of activity lately. The new library and Community Center have drawn people from all over Pinecrest and the surrounding area, and cars can be seen in the parking lot at all hours. There is the gym, classes to satisfy all tastes and many library activities to choose. The garden at the other end of the property is a similar story, and the recent January art festival witnessed thousands of people rediscovering this botanical treasure. This suits the members of the Community Garden Charitable Fund very well since they have been working for the past two years to raise awareness of the unique nature of the garden and its importance to the community, especially as they count down to their upcoming annual Spring Soiree on Feb. 27. The garden was purchased from the owners of the Parrot Jungle in 2002 and during the transition it had fallen into disrepair, with a great deal of overgrowth and invasion from undesirable species. Head horticulturist Craig Morell and his small but tireless staff have made good progress in taming the 14-acre site, and although the Village’s botanical master plan addresses each of its areas, the Village’s annual budget only allows for a small portion to be improved every year. The Garden Fund’s work is to not only help this along, but to provide some “extras” as well. The Fund was formed by Karen Mashburn and other local citizens who love the Garden and want to preserve, enhance and help it to flourish. From the beginning, this was an enthusiastic and hard-working group. Within months of inception, they acquired taxexempt status and put together their first fundraiser, an evening soiree. They have not stopped since. They have held several events, the highlight of which has become the soiree, now a greatlyanticipated annual celebration. Last year’s fete took place in the Garden’s meadow, and with the help of volunteers, donations, the support of
PINECREST GARDEN CLUB the former mayor and Village council, and the extraordinary talents of the Marley brothers and others, the sold out fundraiser was a huge success. Shortly after the dust had settled and the group had a chance to catch their collective breath, plans were underway for this year’s event. The board of directors and committees have been meeting regularly to work out every detail of this large undertaking and on Feb. 27 the Community Garden Charitable Fund will host its third Spring Soiree, again in the Garden’s meadow. Tickets $100 and include dinner by Tango’s, cocktails, music by Kymani Marley and Jimmy B, and a silent auction. Tables of 10 are available for purchase and there is a donor program in place which offers special amenities, some of which include preferred seating, a private chef’s dinner and a birding tour to local points of interest. All proceeds will benefit Pinecrest Gardens. The Garden Fund board works closely with Mayor Cindy Lerner and the Village Council and consults with Morell about future priorities of this diverse historical property. The fund’s past donations have resulted in the installation of hundreds of orchids in the tree canopy, the renovation and replanting of the Garden’s colonnade area, and the purchase of royal Poinciana trees that were planted adjacent to the Community Center. They are now putting together two new projects to be presented to the Village for approval. The Feb. 27 Soiree is expected to sell out quickly, but tickets can be purchased online through www.garden.ticketanimal.com> or by calling 305-588-4489. Gulliver Middle School girl’s basketball team goes undefeated BY BAY PROBY
dominating Miami Country Day School 36-11 and then again defeating Ransom in the championship game 31-13. Melanie Brooks was the tournament MVP and was joined by teammate Stephanie Rubin as All-Tournament team members. With an undefeated season in the balance, Ransom again loomed on the horizon as the last game of the season. In the confines of Gulliver Prep’s Blue Dungeon, the teams both knew what was at stake. The Ransom girls knew they could spoil Gulliver’s dreams of a perfect season with a win. The defensive battle was back and forth throughout the game. With the score tied 11-11, Melanie Brooks was fouled and went to the free-throw line for what would be the two most important foul shots of her young career. Brooks had shot just over 17 percent from the foul line all year, but knocked down both shots and the Raiders hung on for a 13-11 victory. Isa Granados, who did not join the team until the third game of the season, figured prominently in the team’s success. She finished third in scoring. Granados was joined by Brooks, Campbell, Rubin and Cassel as threeyear players, having been members in the sixth and seventh grades as well. Cara and Tesi Zito, seventh grade twins, started several games together and contributed excellent defensive efforts. Other team members were eighth grader Brittany Schrager, seventh graders Meaghan Sylver and Emily Kirsner, and sixth graders Emily Deutsch, Claire Hebb, Madeline Fine and Rylee Hollub. Sixth grader Lauren Waldman was the teams’ very capable team manager.
The Gulliver’s Middle School girl’s basketball team won 14 straight games en route to its second undefeated season in three years. “In what was supposed to be a transition year for the team with only two starters returning, the season turned out to be very special,” said Coach Ebony Rhodes. “We want to thank the entire team for all of their hard work and their families for their support.” Gulliver opened the season with a dominating 30-13 victory at Key Largo School, a traditionally tough opponent. Team captain Stephanie Rubin scored a season high 14 points. Next up was the home opener against Westminster Christian where the team escaped with a hard-fought 27-23 victory. Leading the team in scoring were co-captain Melanie Brooks with 10 points and Denise Campbell with eight. The game that defined the season was the double-overtime 27-23 victory over annual rival Ransom. “Ransom had beaten Gulliver both times last year, so the Gulliver team wanted this win in the worst way,” said assistant coach Matt Telepman. “Ransom held a 14-9 lead with less than five seconds to play when Adrienne Cassel banked a three-pointer to send the game into overtime. Daniella Fuertes won the game in the second overtime when she rebounded her missed second foul shot to seal one of the most intense and exciting games in Gulliver Middle School girl’s basketball history.” The team played its best basketball of the season in the SFMSC tournament,

Dade Heritage Days celebrates Miami’s Historic places BY BECKY ROPER MATKOV To kick off Dade Heritage Days 2009, the public is invited to step back into 1905 when a growing young City of Miami opened its first public high school building. Thanks to a sixyear effort led by the nonprofit Dade Heritage Trust, the original “Old Miami High” has been relocated and restored in Southside Park at 198 SW 11 St. A grand opening, complete with music, costumed students, refreshments and civic pride will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 10:30 a.m. to Noon, to celebrate Old Miami High’s new use as a city parks office and historic classroom. The wood-frame building, with its high ceilings, big windows and inviting
front porch, originally was built in downtown Miami behind the Miami Grammar School. Its first graduating class in 1906 had four students. The structure served as Miami High from 1905 to 1911, then was moved south of the Miami River to serve as the first Southside Elementary School from 1911-1914. By 2002 the vintage building had become a boarding house and was slated for demolition for a condo development. At the suggestion of Arva Moore Parks, Dade Heritage Trust spearheaded a campaign to save the structure. Funding was secured from the City of Miami, Developer Kevin Reilly, the State Bureau of Historic Preservation, Miami-Dade County, the Miami High Alumni, Miss Lamar Louise Curry, The Villagers, Inc., Arthur Hertz, the Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation, and other private donors. Despite funding challenges and delays caused by three

hurricanes, the restoration is now complete and the building will once again be a community resource. This celebration is but one of the 70 events of Dade Heritage Days scheduled for March and April by Dade Heritage Trust to showcase the architecture and historic heritage of Miami-Dade County. Under this year’s theme of “Building History: Making Memories” there are neighborhood house and garden tours, architectural sails on the Miami River and Biscayne Bay, Cape Florida Lighthouse Day, the Deering Estate Seafood Festival, historic walking and bus tours, the Miami City Cemetery Procession,
Dragon Boat tours of the Miami Marine Stadium and Dade Heritage Trust’s Preservation Awards at Vizcaya. All events are open to the public, and many are free. Brochures with the complete Dade Heritage Days schedule are available by calling Dade Heritage Trust at 305-3589572 or visiting <www.dadeheritagetrust.org>. Featured on the brochures are winning entries of Dade Heritage Trust’s Student Art and Photography Contest depicting Miami’s historic landmarks.
Becky Roper Matkov is the president/CEO of Dade Heritage Trust, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve Miami’s historic places through advocacy, education and restoration.

Adopt a good diet, cleanse yourself from inside out BY DR. JUNE GENTLE For some of us, it can be a challenging time to remember or discover the wonderful things we all have in our lives today. As a health care provider, I would like to offer some tips on how to improve your health in mind, body and spirit. First, cleanse yourself from the inside out with a good purification program. This will help to increase the function of your entire body and release your toxins through the digestive tract. This can be done with juicing truck loads of organic fruits (blue berries, apples) and vegetables (broccoli, brussel sprouts, fennel, carrots, alfalfa), or with a few simple inexpensive supplements from a company that deals with whole foods. After all, food is the ideal source of vitamins. Along with theses supplements, adopt an easy diet to follow with a limited amount of lean meat and drink lots of water. Water is the universal solvent. Most of us do not drink enough water and what we do drink could be impure. Water is needed in the body to eliminate toxins and poisons; your cells must be hydrated daily. The secret to pollution is dilution. Our program lasts three weeks and gets you in the habit of eating correctly, and you might even lose some weight. Your energy will increase in all areas, you will feel better and sleep better. By slowly changing your nutritional protocol, this will make such a difference for you in interactions with colleagues and at work, with family and with friends. Exercise, get some sun, get plenty of sleep and always have a prescription

The rhythm of life: Sudden Cardiac Death 101 with John Dylewski, M.D.
“
S
udden cardiac death is the largest cause of natural death in the United States. It’s not a
heart attack. Heart attacks happen when blood flow to the heart is blocked by a clot. Sudden cardiac death occurs when the heart’s electrical system malfunctions and the heart beats erratically. “As an electrophysiologist at South Miami Heart Center, I work with the heart’s electrical system, diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms that could lead to sudden cardiac death. “A defibrillator can save the life of someone who is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The device shocks the heart back into its normal rhythm. Look for AED (Automated External Defibrillator) signs in public places. Every moment counts when preventing sudden cardiac arrest.” — John Dylewski, M.D. Board-certified cardiologist

Hyundai Genesis wins coveted ‘Car of the Year’ award Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Hyundai Genesis continues to gather awards and reap accolades from the world’s automotive industry, most recently winning prestigious “Car of the Year” honors at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Just last fall, members of the Southern Automotive Media Association picked the Genesis as “Best in Show” at the South Florida International Auto Show. The Genesis represents a huge step for Korea-based Hyundai and the new luxury sedan is the cornerstone of the company’s attempt to reach upscale drivers while still maintaining the brand’s roots with low-cost economy models such as the Accent. With prices starting at about $32,000, the rear-wheel drive Genesis looks and drives a lot like the pricier MercedesBenz and Lexus models.
Genesis is built on Hyundai’s all-new performance-driven rear-wheel-drive architecture and offers a choice of two powertrains — the Lambda 3.8-liter 290 hp V-6 engine (18/27 mpg) or Hyundai’s all-new Tau 4.6-liter V-8 engine (17/25 mpg). The Tau is mated to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic and produces 375 hp using premium fuel and 368 hp with regular unleaded. Genesis also comes with much of the latest technology, including XM NavTraffic, Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS), Lexicon audio systems and electronic active head restraints. Genesis’ use of the all-new rear-wheeldrive platform is the first application in a U.S. Hyundai model and the car has a near ideal 52/48 front-to-rear weight distribution, which translates into exceptional handling and steering characteristics. The rear-wheel-drive layout allowed engineers to position the car’s front wheels farther forward delivering outstanding handling and steering performance. Standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the industry’s most important new safety technology, further enhances the vehicle’s handling. Hyundai is a

leader in the standard application of ESC, with more than 70 percent of 2008 Hyundais having ESC as standard equipment. Genesis also has reduced interior noise levels and improved ride and handling thanks to a stiffer and lighter body structure. The use of high-tensile steel in critical areas in the unibody provides Genesis with 12-14 percent higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower
body structure weight than the BMW 5Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Surprisingly, the Hyundai Genesis has more interior room than the Mercedes Benz E-Class or the BMW 7-Series. Tree City USA sign erected on Ludlam Road BY LEE STEPHENS Mayor Cindy Lerner and her Village Council colleagues unveiled a sign on Ludlam Road acknowledging the Tree City USA designation recently bestowed on Pinecrest by the National Arbor Day Foundation. The national recognition highlights the Village’s ongoing commitment to community forestry. Pinecrest has planted approximately 10,000 trees in public spaces, including street swales, parks and along the Pinecrest Parkway corridor, since 1997. “A majority of the trees were planted during an intensive six-year effort in which we invested $250,000 annually,” said Councilmember Bob Ross, a member of the former Landscape Committee that oversaw most of the tree planting projects. At the unveiling ceremony, Mayor Lerner recognized the Village’s continued commitment to valuing the role of trees as an important component of the quality of life for residents and acknowledged the work of staff and former Mayor Evelyn Greer in making the designation of a Tree City USA possible by virtue of their dedication to a green Pinecrest. Mayor Cindy Lerner, members of the Village Council and staff participate at the unveiling of the new Tree City USA sign.

Train don’t chain your best friend Beginning April 2009, it will be illegal to keep your dog tethered when you aren’t present. This means it will be unlawful to tie a dog to any object or structure -- including a house, tree, fence, post, garage or shed -- by any means, such as chain, rope, cord, leash or running line. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use a leash to walk a dog. That fact is that dogs left tethered and unattended are deprived of social interaction, and since they can’t run if they feel threatened, they are 2.8 times more likely to bite. So the anti-tethering law has been enacted to improve the safety of residents as well as the well-being of pets.
REAL ESTATE If you are selling in anything other than a hot market, you might find “staging” your home can help generate more interest and offers. You needn’t spend thousands of dollars on improvements or professional consultants, however. There are several things you can take into your own hands to improve your home’s appeal. Begin by removing scatter rugs and knickknacks, which can clutter a room. In the kitchen remove all appliances from the counters except the coffee maker and microwave. Set your dining table in a welcoming fashion, with plates, silverware and napkins. You might be tempted to throw every-
thing into the closets, but buyers will look there, too, so box everything up and place into storage. Focus on the “feature rooms” – family room, kitchen, dining room and master bedroom — keeping additional rooms as sparsely furnished as possible. Do your spring cleaning now, scrubbing the walls and floors and shining up those windows. It has been estimated that one out of four homes listed are “staged” and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Staging Your Home to Sell states you can gain up to $9,000 on a $200,000 house if it is properly presented. You might spend up to $100 per room in time and money, but that’s a pretty small investment for that kind of return.

(Miami, FL) August 15--Dr.
Mark K. Sachs is the only doctor in the world allowed to train other doctors and medical professionals to use a newly developed laser for the most advanced form of laser body sculpting. The new “smarter” laser is called the Syneron LipoLite. An expert in his field for his innovative approach to cosmetic and weight loss medicine, Dr. Sachs is excited to bring this new laser to help patients. Dr. Sachs says,” This new laser, unlike others, can be utilized to etch deeper into fat to better frame the buttock. The patient will find the procedure to be extremely comfortable and more efficacious. No other laser in the world can match its performance. This new laser is quicker, safer and more effective than the rest, helping Dr. Sachs to give you that full, perfectly lifted buttock. Dr. Sachs not only uses the Syneron LipoLite laser he combines this with fat transfer utilizing the micro-injection technique. This is were he harvests fat from an area of fat excess, usually the hips, thighs or flank and transfers it to the buttock via the use of many small volume fat injections. This allows him to latterly sculpt you a new buttock that is curvier, fuller and lifted. No other physician in Miami combines the LipoLite Laser to frame the buttock with the micro-injection technique for transferring fat. To contact Dr. Sachs, MD, Call 305-372-5974. Don’t forget inflation when you retire

EXPERTS MAKING YOUR EXISTING SYSTEM MORE EFFICIENT
ALL MAKES AND MODELS
BY RUDY MUÑIZ During your working years you put money away hoping that it will grow enough to help provide you with a comfortable retirement. But once you retire, haven’t you reached your goal? You don’t still need to invest for growth, do you? Actually, you do. You may be retiring, but the cost of living marches on. In fact, even with a relatively mild inflation rate of three percent, you’ll pay about twice as much for goods and services in 25 years as you do today. And since you could easily spend two or three decades in retirement, you need to be prepared for these costs. At first glance, you might think that this situation presents you with a daunting challenge. Historically, stocks are the only financial assets that have significantly outperformed inflation. Yet, as a retiree, you may be nervous about investing in equities, especially given the stock market’s performance last year. How can you stay ahead of inflation without taking on too much risk? Unquestionably, you’ll have to manage your investment portfolio very carefully during your retirement years. But it’s important to realize that you do have options. Here are a few suggestions: • Consider dividend-paying stocks. By doing some research, you can find stocks that have paid — and even increased — dividends for many consecutive years. Obviously, a source of rising income can help you in your battle against inflation — and many dividend-paying stocks also offer the potential for long-term growth. Keep in mind, though, that a company can decrease or eliminate its stock dividend at any time. • Create an inflation-fighting withdrawal strategy. During your retirement, you will probably need to take withdrawals from all your resources — your taxable brokerage and savings accounts; your tax-deferred accounts, such as your Traditional IRA and your 401(k); and your tax-free accounts, such as your Roth IRA. (A Roth IRA’s
$ MONEY $ earnings grow tax-free if you’ve had your account for at least five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59 1/2). Obviously, the longer you can preserve your tax-advantaged growth potential, the better off you’ll be when it comes to staying ahead of inflation. Consequently, you may want to take withdrawals from your taxable account first, tap into your Traditional IRA and your 401(k) next and save the Roth IRA for last. (If you’re 70 1/2 or older, however, you need to take required minimum distributions from your Traditional IRA and your 401(k).) That said, this is just a rule of thumb, as your actual strategy may change from year to year, depending on your expected tax burden. • Think about some TIPS. Most types of Treasury bills or bonds pay a fixed rate of return, which makes them susceptible to inflation. However, you can also invest in Treasury InflationProtected Securities or TIPS. The principle of a TIPS increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index. When your TIPS mature, you are paid the adjusted principal or original principal, whichever is greater. Be aware, though, that you’ll be taxed on the annual inflation adjustments, even though you won’t receive this money until your bond is redeemed. Consult with your tax advisor to determine if you should put your TIPS in a tax-deferred account, such as a Traditional IRA. You’ll have to cope with inflation throughout your retirement years. But by making the right moves, at the right time, you can greatly boost your chances of enjoying the lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

In fact, the National Center for Disease Control reported an 18 percent increase. Herskowitz decided there was a growing need for foods and other products that were tailored especially for people with restricted diets. To meet that need, she opened The Allergy-Free Shop at 8803 SW 132 St. near The Falls Shopping Center. In addition to offering a wide selection of foods and other products for allergy sufferers, The Allergy-Free Shop hosts a monthly lecture series that is free and open to the public. The lectures deal with various topics related to allergies and special diets. Last fall, Dr. Susan Benenati talked about the difficulties faced by children going back to school with food allergies and local nutritionist Natalie Romero, who suffers from celiac disease, prepared several delicious gluten-free
turkey day entrees. The Allergy-Free Shop offers a discount to all who attend these monthly lectures, and also provides product samples at the event. Other events hosted by The AllergyFree Shop include the annual Food Tasting Extravaganza and information sessions for local support groups. “The goal is to provide a local outlet for people to learn more about their allergies or dietary restrictions, to offer support when needed and to carry the widest selection of products for those who truly need them,” said Herskowitz.” The Allergy-Free Shop is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 7 p.m. on Wednesday night and special event nights. For those interested in attending the Allergy-Free Shop’s local events, send an email to <info@allergyfreeshop.com> and request updates and news alerts, or call 305-254-2828. The next event is set for March 17 at 6:30 p.m. and will feature Teresa Becerra from the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Autism Society of America. Becerra will discuss autism and the GFCF (Gluten-Free/CaseinFree) diet. Space is limited, so be sure and RSVP.

It was an evening for reflection and celebration as Temple Beth Am honored its pioneer members with a Shabbat service and oneg reception, paying tribute to the founding families of South Florida’s oldest Reform congregation. A near capacity crowd gathered on Friday, Jan. 23, for a reception followed by a service in the new Jan and Daniel Lewis Religious Life Complex. Senior Rabbi Terry Bookman called families up to the bimah, recognizing them for their years of membership, beginning with those members who joined 36 years ago and continued year by year all the way to the original founders who started the synagogue 54 years ago. Over 100 members assembled on the bimah as Rabbi Bookman offered words of blessing thanking them for their service to the community, for sustaining Temple Beth Am every year. “We have all been strengthened and enriched by their commitment,” she said. Rabbi Herbert Baumgard, Rabbi Emeritus, joined Rabbi Bookman, Rabbi Jim Simon and Rabbi Rachel Greengrass on the bimah to offer the priestly blessing, the Birkat Kohanim, and then the congregation shared a final poignant moment together as Cantors Rachelle Nelson and Lisa Segal sang the song Holy Place. Temple Beth Am, the House of the People, was founded in 1955 when a small group of young families got together expressing a need for a synagogue closer to home. Founding member Evelyn Axler, whose late husband, Dr. Morton Axler, a pediatrician in South Miami, recalls the day when someone walked into the office and asked her to attend a meeting to discuss forming a new synagogue. “There was a small group of us, we all had young kids and we knew we needed to have a place for our children to attend religious school and come together,” Axler said. “At the time, the closest synagogue was 11 or 12 miles away and my two sons were then ages 3 and 6, and I knew I didn’t want to do that much driving; this is really how it all started.” Since that day 54 years ago, the Axler family, along with so many others, has
enjoyed a long history at Temple Beth Am, with Rabbi Baumgard officiating at both sons’ bar mitzvahs and weddings and they have shared funerals and all the family’s lifecycle events with their Beth Am community. Today, Axler says her life is still very much centered around the synagogue. She attends Friday night worship services at least twice a month, enjoys the Lunch and Learn programs as well as many of the other programming Beth Am offers. Temple members, Jordan and Judy Bittel, also attended the event, celebrating 50 years of Beth Am membership together. Judy Bittel recalls joining and having their daughter’s, baby naming in the original sanctuary just after it was built. Since that time, they have had 11 Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and two weddings at Beth Am and continue to attend services and Torah study every week. Judy was a teacher in Beth Am’s preschool and the day school for 19 years and her daughterin-law, Linda, teaches second grade, continuing the Bittel tradition. “I am so proud, I love everything about the Temple,” Judy said. “It seems there is something going on seven days a week, which is just perfect for young families, and I hope in the future we will continue to be here for this community.” She is currently serving on the committee to plan the upcoming gala on April 18. EVENTS Invite a Friend Shabbat , Friday, March 20, 6 p.m. — Join us to celebrate a special Shabbat, catch a glimpse of Beth Am and let us show you the benefit of belonging to a synagogue community. This event is free and open to everyone. Pr ospective Member Br eakfast and Tour, Sunday, March 22, 10:30 a.m. — Join us for a complimentary light breakfast and walking tour of our beautiful facility. RSVP for both events to Rita Diaz at 305-667-6667, ext. 107, or by email to <rdiaz@tbam.org>. Temple Beth Am is a nurturing and caring Reform congregation committed to Jewish continuity, life-long education, spiritual renewal, life-cycle transitions, and Shabbat and holy day celebrations. Beth Am offers religious, educational, cultural, social and athletic programs that meet the dynamic needs of our community.

Jay Black concert promises to be a ‘magic moment’ Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS You know how a tune starts playing in your head and you can’t get it to stop? Soon you find yourself wandering around and singing it out loud, prompting strange stares from everyone around you. (Count yourself lucky if you have never heard me sing. I’m not even sure you can call it singing.) A song I hadn’t thought about in years popped into my head as I watched Barack Obama’s inaugural events last month and wouldn’t stop playing in my head. Over and over and over again. I couldn’t remember all the words, so it went something like this: “Only in America Can a guy from anywhere Go to sleep a pauper and wake up a millionaire! Only in America Can a kid without a cent Get a break and maybe grow up to be President! Only in America Land of opportunity… Only in America Could a dream like this come true… Only in America Land of opportunity...” You don’t have to be much of a detective to figure out why the song kept playing in my head. In fact, just about every newscaster in the country had uttered “only in America” at least once in the last few months. To be honest, at the time I couldn’t
tell you who made the song famous. I just kept singing, “Only in America, Land of opportunity…” I couldn’t even drag myself away from the television to check online. The answer came unexpectedly as I researched this column. I was surprised to discover that Only in America was the first hit of Jay and the Americans. It was released in July, 1963, with Jay Black singing lead. And now the song continues to play over and over and over again in my head because the subject of this column is the fact that Black will appear at the Dave and Mary Alper JCC on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. (Every once in a while the song in my head now switches to This Magic Moment.) To quote the press material for the concert: “Don’t miss a ‘magic moment’ with the legendary pop singer who still plays to sold-out audiences around the country! Jay Black’s resurgence in popularity reflects the timelessness of the classics we all know – Only in America, Come a Little Bit Closer, Cara Mia, This Magic Moment, Walking in the Rain and so many more. Join us for an extraordinary evening of nostalgia and rock and roll!” Black (born David Blatt), also known as “The Voice,” reached his height of fame in the 1960s when he was the lead singer of the band Jay and the Americans. He began his music career by writing songs. In 1962, Jay and the Americans had already hit the charts with She Cried but their lead singer decided to leave to pursue a solo career. The band was desperately seeking a replacement lead singer. Black stepped forward with his unique and powerful voice and the rest, as they say, is history. Jay and the Americans brought a dis-
tinctive sound and clean cut image to the music scene. With Black as lead singer, Jay and the Americans charted a string of hits on the United Artists label. Black and the group were the opening act for The Beatles’ first appearance in the United States and they went on to open for The Rolling Stones and other top British acts. In spite of the British invasion, Jay and his boys carried the American flag almost single-handedly through the 1960s with 21 chart singles. For more information, call305-2719000, ext. 268, or log on to <www.alperjcc.org>. JUDAIC POP ART EXHIBIT Another lasting influence of the ’60s was the birth of the American Pop Art movement. So, it makes sense to me that the Jay Black concert on Feb. 26 will be preceded by the opening reception for the exhibit Debbie Richman: Pop Art – Judaic and Secular at 7 p.m. at the Futernick Family Art Gallery at the Alper JCC. Richman’s refreshing graphic-influenced works on canvas have won awards and earned her the moniker of the Jewish Britto. The Dallas artist’s signature style is defined by bold contrasting colors, unusual perspectives and design elements that create energy and excitement. “Most of my work integrates a single three-dimensional object into the composition providing a unique depth and ‘I Spy’ conversation,” explains Richman. Her work has been strongly influenced by the colors used in Van Gogh’s paintings, the boldness of Jasper Johns’ compositions, and the Pop Art of Andy Warhol. Richman reinterprets traditional Jewish holiday symbols and everyday themes and creates a unique, contem-

porary perspective that has strong graphic elements. The work of Debbie Richman has gained national recognition and is in private collections around the United States. The exhibit is open Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. and runs from Feb. 26 through Mar. 29 For more information call Suzy Breitner, director of visual arts, at 305271-9000, ext. 265, or log on to <www.alperjcc.org>.
