ONE OF MIAMI’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Calling the Palmetto Class of 1980 — it’s reunion time!

H

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD ard as it is to believe for the alumni, it’s time for the Palmetto High Class of 1980 to have its 30-year reunion. Former class president Jamie Wasser is looking for alumni who might have missed the notification about the reunion, which will take place May 28-29 in Coconut Grove at the Courtyard Marriott, 2649 South Bayshore Drive, which was the old Doubletree Hotel until the recent change of ownership. “Hopefully, this reunion will bring people together,” Wasser says, adding that she hopes to reunite the group and talk about what everyone’s done in the last 30 years. Wasser says the class didn’t have a lot of people who went on to be famous, but it was a good class because they had a lot of active, involved people. However, she hopes this reunion will be different and that people will drop the identity of jock or homecoming queen and talk about their lives today.

Florida House of Representatives Bill HB 5, enacted on April 29, grants the special designation to “that portion of Ludlam Road between Bird Road and Southwest 136th Street in South Miami and in MiamiDade County.” The purpose of the bill is to help preserve the beauty and quality of the road named for South Florida pioneer Walter Ludlam. The bill prohibits use of public funds for cutting or removing trees with a diameter

I Google-searched the word “sales” and got 580 million results. Use the key word “sales” in Amazon.com and you will get 518,760 books written on the “art” of sales. And sales “management”? Ha! A whopping 17,877 books. Did you know there were that many experts writing books on how to manage and inspire your salespeople? There is no magic pixie dust for great sales. So save your hard-earned dollars and take some free advice. The same timeless principles apply to producing profitable sales whether you’re selling widgets or cars. And the same character traits are present in all successful salespeople. The following will be some basic examples that you probably have heard before. But having the discipline to apply them is the difference between success and failure. I was taught to listen more than I speak. People will tell you exactly what their wants and needs are if they can find someone to listen. And we’ve all had customers who sometimes told us more than their wants and needs, right? I also learned that if you can get other people what they want, you’ll always get what you want. In my industry, working for Kendall Chevrolet, if you can get Mr. and Mrs. Customer (with 2.5 kids, a pre-paid college plan and a dog named Fluffy) the perfect SUV for the baseball games, ballet recitals and occasional lengthy road trip, you will get the gross profit you deserve. Did you understand that? If you can identify and satisfy the wants and needs of everyone in that sales equation above (commonly known as “building value”) the customer will be willing to pay you a reasonable profit, where you can earn a substantial living. And more importantly, that customer will refer their friends, relatives and coworkers for the same experience. You also have to be genuinely interested in satisfying their needs. Then why don’t our salespeople understand that? It’s called bad habits. Habits are

SAVINGS & MARKETING like a soft bed; easy to get into and tough to get out of. I read a lot of self development and motivational books. One of the “gurus” of self development said it takes 21 days to form or break a habit. I just recently experienced this first hand when I decided to commit to going back to the gym five or six times a week. The first two weeks were hell, waking up every morning at 5:30 to be at the gym by 6 a.m. I thought of every excuse to avoid what I knew had to be done. Sound familiar? By the third and fourth week, my body was craving the exercise and I started seeing amazing results. Can you get your salespeople to form good habits or in most cases break the bad habits? Absolutely. If you’re in a retail setting, how about getting everyone in your store to extend a handshake and say, “Welcome to ABC Company, my name is Joe Salesman. And your name is?” Instead of, “How ya doing? Need any help?” They have to say that to every customer, every day for at least 21 days. How about completing five, 10, maybe 20 follow-up, birthday and anniversary “thanks for the business” calls during the first hour they arrive at the workplace. They have to make those types of calls every day for 21 days. Will your old dogs embrace this initially? Probably not. But if your new dogs are having success, then keep hiring new dogs and start them with good habits from the beginning. After 21 days you will see them going from consciously complaining to unconsciously succeeding. If you’re going to ask your salespeople to make the commitment to form good habits that produce results, you better be willing to make the same commitment to enforce them. It takes strong leadership to develop strong salespeople with good habits.

Positive PEOPLE in Pinecrest

CAMERON CABRERA Westminster Christian School senior Cameron Cabrera took up competitive swimming just four years ago. He worked so hard at the sport that he earned a scholarship to La Salle University, a Division I school in Philadelphia. Cabrera signed the scholarship papers April 21. The scholarship will pay for 89 percent of the cost of his college education and is funded by the LaSalle Athletic Department, but it also includes academic funding. Cabrera swims the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 500 free and will continue to swim those events in college. He had a good senior season, going undefeated in dual meets in the 2009 season. “I was district champion in the 50 free and 100 free,” he says, adding that he placed high enough in the regionals to qualify for states, where he finished sixth in the 100 free and seventh in the 50 free. Cabrera was named Westminster’s Most Valuable Varsity Swimmer in 2008 and 2009, and he made the Miami Herald’s All MiamiDade first team. He holds school records in the 200 free, 100 fly and 100 back. Not bad for a kid that played baseball from the time he was three years old and waited until he was in the seventh grade before deciding to get into swimming. “I chose swimming after watching the Olympics in 2004,” he says. Watching Michael Phelps win all those medals inspired him to swim at school, but he didn’t start to seriously train and swim all

year until he was in the ninth grade. “It’s something I love to do,” Cabrera says. “I think it’s the hardest sport, it’s all about you. If you don’t train hard in the pool, you won’t have it in the end. I place goals for myself that keep me pushing forward.” While it could have been risky giving up a sport that he knew well, his hard work paid off when several schools recruited him for his swimming talent. He chose La Salle because he believes it will be the best fit for him. “They brought a lot to the table, not only for swimming, but for broadcast journalism,” he says. “LaSalle started recruiting me in my junior year and I went on an official visit in January.” He also made official visits to Wingate University and the University of Massachusetts before deciding on LaSalle. Cabrera plans to major in broadcast journalism, with the goal of going into sports reporting. But he’s also interesting in being a news reporter. Through swimming, Cabrera earned more than 300 community service hours. “A lot of those hours were from teaching kids how to swim,” he says. He worked the Aqua Kids Camp at Westminster for a couple of summers and he also taught many of his Westminster teammates’ siblings how to swim. He held many of those lessons at Ransom Everglades, where his club team Miami Swimming practices. “I’ve been swimming with them since the end of my sophomore year,” he says. Cabrera’s extracurricular activities at Westminster include playing the saxophone in the school band. “I’ve been in the band for 10 years,” he says. “I’m in the jazz band.” He’s also president of the Fellowship for Christian Athletes. “Basically, this year we were bringing it back because the school had decided to eliminate it,” he says. “I didn’t feel that should be eliminated. I brought in a speaker this year and pretty much set it up for next year.” His community service includes participating in several beach clean-ups on South Beach and Biscayne Bay. He also volunteers at his church, St. John Neumann, helping out with activities for CCD classes and reading for younger children.

By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

DANIEL BROOKS Palmetto High School junior Daniel Brooks already has approximately 1,200 community service hours under his belt and he still has his senior year to go. Some of those hours come from working at the MiniCanes Sports Camp at the University of Miami where he was a sports aide for the past two years. “I think working with kids is really rewarding because you help them grow; I mentor them,” Brooks says. “We taught them sports and we played with them.” He worked at the camps for two weeks each summer. His mother is a UM employee, which is how he became connected with the camp. Brooks also worked with 10-11 year old kids as a camp counselor at a sleep-away camp in North Carolina. “Camp Carolina is really gorgeous,” he says. “There’s a lot outside you can do. I went there when I was younger for four or five years. It was really enjoyable.” In fact, Brooks discovered his love for white water kayaking at Camp Carolina. Now he looks for every opportunity to go kayaking. “There were a couple of experiences that were pretty crazy, like going down these

Category 4 rapids,” he says. “My dad was so impressed, but not my mom.” Brooks particularly likes to go kayaking on Lake Tahoe because there are rivers in the area that he says are awesome. With his daredevil personality, a tame sport like football just isn’t enough, so he plays lacrosse. “I thought it was an attractive sport,” he says. “It was aggressive and fast paced and a lot of my friends were doing it.” Brooks also enjoys traveling. He was born in Australia and both parents are British, so he has three passports. “I’ve been all over Europe, Italy, France and Spain,” he says. “We’re going to go to Australia. I haven’t been back since we moved.” Brooks has been taking Spanish in school because he wants to be able to converse easily when he travels to South America. Currently, Brooks has been working on a community service project to help the environment. He applied for two grants through Fairchild Tropical Garden. One is a Water Wise Grant and the other is from the National Environmental Education Foundation. “Basically it’s called Every Drop Counts,” he says. The idea is to spread water conservation education throughout Pinecrest by handing out pamphlets with water saving tips. He and his friends have conducted a survey on home water use and they have produced a commercial and a slide presentation to show on television to help the cause. Brooks says he became fascinated with saving the environment while taking Advanced Placement Environmental Science last year. His interest in environmental science may lead to a career in environmental engineering or he may do something in a health-related field. “I definitely want to travel and help people in the health field,” he says. Because of the class he has also spearheaded a cell phone recycling drive. The top school wins cash prizes and a concert by Boys Like Girls. When he begins making his college applications, he says he will probably consider a competitive school in the northeast or one on the west coast, but the school will need a strong research academy to be considered. “The benefit of going to the west coast is that I’ll be close to Lake Tahoe, and that’s a big plus,” he says.

HEEWEON KIM Heeweon Kim is motivated by her passion to raise awareness and make a difference in the lives of less fortunate children

around the world. As a junior at Palmetto Senior High School, she is involved in several clubs that focus on the global needs of others. “The fundraising that we do has such a direct impact on so many children’s lives,” said Kim. “It makes me feel great that I’m making such a big difference.” Since her freshman year, Kim has been involved in the Interact Club, Rotary International’s youth service club that completes community service projects and fosters international goodwill. As the President-Elect of Interact Club this year, she also oversees the O Ambassadors organization, an Oprah Winfrey program designed to address international poverty. To raise money for this group, Kim organized and co-directed the school’s first Panthers Got Talent Show. The proceeds from the show totaled over $4,000 and were donated to two causes. “A portion of the money we raised went to build wells that will provide children in South Asia with fresh water and another portion went to the earthquake relief efforts

in Haiti,” added Kim. Kim is also past president of Invisible Children United, where she focused on raising awareness and money for the children of Uganda. In the group, Eight Habits of the Heart, she is among a select group of students at Palmetto High that speaks to the freshman class on a quarterly basis about the core values of the school. “We stress responsibility, integrity and honesty during these sessions,” she said. “We also answer questions from the freshman, mentor them and give tips for stress relief.” Kim is also the treasurer of the Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and designed the group’s tee shirt. She competes in all the math competitions and as a senior next year, she will be the vice president of competitions. She is a member of National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Chemistry Crew for the Science Show that will travel to local elementary schools and conduct experiments for children. “I really enjoy learning and my family values education, so I work very hard to

achieve high goals,” said Kim. “I really love my school and all of the activities and opportunities here.” Kim was born in Korea and because of her father’s career in international business, she and her family moved around during her young life before settling in Miami. “I’ve lived in the Philippines, Morocco and Korea,” said Kim. “I came to the states when I was in sixth grade.” Kim will spend six weeks of her summer at Vanderbilt University’s PAVE program, a pre-college curriculum designed for students who are planning to study engineering, pre-medical, science or technology. “I’ll be with other juniors and seniors from around the country attending biochemical and chemistry research programs,” said Kim. “I’ll also take part of the summer to narrow down the field of colleges that I’m considering. My plans are to go into the medical field, in pharmaceutical sciences or dentistry.”

REUNION,

“It’s not about who we were then,” Wasser says, “it’s about who we are now; it’s 30 years later. We all have 30 years of life stories. This is a good time to meet people. It’s a great way to make contacts. It’s a great social networking thing as well.” The cost for the reunion is $145 per person for the weekend. “Friday night is light fare and there will be a cash bar and by the pool,” she says. “Saturday there is going to be an open bar and we’re going to have food stations and a casual cocktail party feel.” The idea is that a more casual event with food stations will allow for more socializing than having everyone sit at tables of 10. The casual atmosphere will be bolstered by music and dancing.

LUDLAM,

“We’re expecting 120 to 130 people and folks are coming in from everywhere, as far as England and Seattle, from all over the country and all around the state of Florida,” Wasser says. “Because of Facebook, there’s a big buzz about this. Facebook has been reuniting people. It’s also cutting the boundaries of the cliques.” The reunion page on Facebook has been up for quite some time and that has helped bring attention to the Class of ’80 reunion. Alumni not only learned about the event on Facebook, many have used the PayPal link to immediately pay the registration and attendance fee. Information is also posted on <Classmates.com> and on the official Palmetto High School website. For more information, go to MPHS Class of 1980 Reunion on Facebook. Checks must be received by May 21.

in excess of 6 inches within 35 feet of either side of the paved surface or any activity that causes the removal of trees without their replacement. It also prohibits changing the physical dimensions or location of the road. “I’ve got to give credit to two people,” Rep. Robaina said. “Joe Corradino asked me to help with this issue, and another one who needs to be identified is the South Miami Commissioner who passed away, Jay Beckman. He was the first one who brought it to my attention. When Jay Beckman became a commissioner in South Miami, his number one priority to push for was to be able to stop the county or the state from ever coming down Ludlam and widening it to a four-lane highway, like it is in other areas, because that would destroy the residential areas between Bird and U.S. 1 in South Miami. “We tried to do it last year and it failed. This year we finally got it passed on the last day of session. So Beckman’s dream came true. No one will be able to destroy those beautiful trees that line 67th Avenue. They

won’t be able to tear up people’s driveways in front of their homes.” Robaina said he thinks it’s important to preserve the small town feel of the areas along Ludlam, and that passage of the bill is a big victory for the residents of South Miami and Pinecrest. Corradino praised Robaina’s work on everyone’s behalf. “I think that most of the thanks go to Julio, being in the legislature and doing a great job for our cities in his district,” said Corradino. “That guy is really accessible and listens to us, and carries our thoughts and wishes up to Tallahassee. “Ludlam is an important road that runs pretty far north. It’s beautifully landscaped and it’s literally the spine of our community, and it’s important to the Village of Pinecrest and our council to make sure we preserve the road. I don’t think there are any plans to fourlane it in the near future, but with all of the development in South Florida, at some point, 10 or 25 years ahead, that idea might come up, so it was important to protect the road.”

Palmetto measures up against ‘magnet’ schools BY SPENCER DANDES I’ve only been to three basketball games, a handful of baseball games, and a single football game, but I have a strong sense of Panther pride. With that pride lingering, it bothers me when I hear of the million eighth graders in a magnet school craze. For some reason, Palmetto High School just isn’t good enough for them. I simply can’t wrap my mind around it. From my standpoint, it seems like our school has everything to offer. I’m usually blown away when I watch our performance groups, whether it was the recent Variations show or the orchestra and theatre department in school musicals. We may not produce the next Yoyo Ma on a yearly basis, but Palmetto is full of talent in all of the arts. Still, the thought of coming to Palmetto feels like a compromise for an increasing number of middle school students. What faults do they see in our school that makes it so unappealing? We’re the only non-magnet high school in the district to be named an “A” school last year, and over the last few years we have consistently ranked highly in national polls as well. For months, my sister, currently in the eighth grade dance magnet at Southwood, talked of attending any high school but Palmetto. She auditioned at performing arts schools and even entered the lottery for science programs at Terra and MAST. After having three family members graduate from Palmetto, it was a total shock to listen to her initial lack of interest in this school. I secretly pumped my fist under the dinner table when I heard that she hadn’t been accepted to her top choices and had decided on Palmetto. I guess my mindset was based on tradition; it excited me to think that I

might come home from college and hear stories about mutual teachers. I wondered why she was so hesitant to face the fact that she is now a Panther. I wish I could ask the million, and counting, eighth graders what they expect from magnet schools that they feel they cannot attain at Palmetto. I know of several people who started out in high school at a magnet, were totally unsatisfied with their experience, and switched to non-magnets during their sophomore or junior years. If this school was good enough for countless 2010 seniors to get into Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and the like, why isn’t it good enough for the younger groups whose futures plans have yet to be considered? Should they happen to look up from their magnet school applications long enough to take it all in, perhaps they’ll notice everything Palmetto can do for them. From what I’ve heard, magnet school teachers are no match for Palmetto’s teachers, and we have a superior variety of classes for students to take. On top of that, there’s simply no substitute for the total high school atmosphere that Panthers enjoy on a daily basis. Not many magnet school kids surround themselves with club meetings or sports games (assuming adequate school spirit exists). To me, it’s more important to find an interest in many different things than to limit yourself, as magnet schools may, to one main activity. Palmetto has met all of my expectations, and it will do the same for my sister. For those future high school students still contemplating our school, I wish they would give us a chance.

Spencer Dandes is a senior at Palmetto High School. He plans to attend the University of Miami in the fall and major in journalism. He may be contacted by email at <sdandes@bellsouth.net>.

When setting your price, place it 10 to 15

percent below your competition. All other things being equal, your home will readily appear as the best value. Also consider the price “range” your home will fall into and make sure you’re on the lower end of that range. For example, a $199,000 home falls into the upper end of the $150,000 to $200,000 range, but that same home priced at $201,000 is in the lower end of $200,000 to $250,000 range. Buyers tend to look in ranges of prices, so again, make yours look like the best value. Finally, talk with your agent about incentives you can offer, like paying buyer closing costs or a decorating allowance. If you have a strong need to sell quickly, any or all of these suggestions should produce results.

It would be hard to find anyone in the world of triathlon who didn’t know the name Macca and the skill and titles that go with it. What I didn’t find was anything deeper than that. Who are those who were most influential in shaping this athlete’s outlook on life? Entering Macca:Unplugged, I was immersed in a setting saturated with Hammerheads. Not as frightening as it sounds; Team Hammerhead is the name of South Florida’s Triathlete Club, which has been around for 11 years. Macca was in town for the 2010 Nautica South Beach race. He spoke at Macca:Unplugged and hosted Spin with Macca at Pinecrest Fitness the following day. A tight-knit support group of family and friends is imperative in Chris McCormack’s world. He and his best friend, Sean, have traveled the world together. How does Sean continue to have influence after all these years? “We grew up watching Ironman and fantasizing about competing,” McCormack says. They promised one another that they would race together, drafting a racing to-do list. Like a movie, they ended up accomplishing it, too, all but the final race. “After racing in the qualifiers,” Macca says, “with much tribulation, we qualified for the Hawaii Ironman. Sean was out celebrating and was killed in a car accident.” Never one to give up on a dream, Macca dedicated his 2007 Kona win to Sean, acknowledging him before crossing the finish line, raising his arms skyward and

mouthing, “We did it!” He did this in part because after losing four times he felt as though Sean still had something to say. “I felt Sean was looking down, somehow keeping me from winning in Hawaii, telling me, ‘You’re not ready, you’re not ready!’ Sean was right.” For, Macca mentions, only by making it through such deficits, can you realize the gravity of what you have accomplished. “One is so much more appreciative of the win after all the losses,” he says. Another strong influence was his mother. What has she instilled in Chris that has helped him throughout life? “Being Maori and living in Australia, she was always different,” he says. “She taught me that being different is good and that conforming isn’t necessary for success. She gave me courage and told me to chase my dreams. She allowed me to be brave enough to become the athlete that I am. I believe this kind of thinking is crucial, especially today where there is not enough focus on individuality.” His to-do list vanquished, will he start another one? Macca chuckles and ponders the question. “I think when that day comes it’s my time to sit back and enjoy the journey,” he says. “Life is too short for lists. Life shouldn’t be driven by money and material possessions. That’s happened for me. I just want to be happy and, honestly, I think I will be.” Although I only met him for a moment, I agree, I think he will be happy. And he deserves it.

Can Neurofeedback help me improve my level of functioning? I want to increase my productivity: Is Peak Performance Training FOR ME?

One of the most rewarding interventions offered at the Miami Institute of Training and Neurofeedback is peak performance. Peak Performance Training is for individuals who are committed to excellence, and yet are experiencing some form of obstacle to reaching their own personal best. Whether you are an executive desiring that extra edge in stressful situations, a performing artist, or possible an athlete whose mental game makes all the difference in winning, peak performance

training can be extremely useful. Depending on the nature of the performance requirements, peak performance intervention involves a diagnostic interview to clarify objectives followed by a series of diagnostic assessments to pinpoint the specific problems to be targeted. Once a diagnostic picture is clear , the clinician discusses the findings with you, and explore the various treatment options available, finally agreeing on a plan of action. There are a number of leading-edge technologies available today designed to help individuals with performance anxiety reduction, stress management, improved concentration, sharpened focus, and improved self concept. Benefits of this training typically lead to increased overall life satisfaction, self-confidence, self-assurance, and of course, increased productivity at work and at school. Among these intervention options are EEG Neurofeedback (sometimes called EEG Brainwave Training), Biofeedback, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), as well as a variety of different

treatments in either an individual or group setting. Normally, individuals experience a significant improvement in performance following even the initial stages of the intervention. Just beginning to explore the nature of the problem with a professional and starting to clarify for themselves exactly what their peak performance goals are often brings a significant improvement in performance. In any peak performance situation there is almost always a significant level of anxiety associated with one’s difficulties. Performance anxiety can be reduced in a variety of ways as the individual learns how to replicate this control over anxiety at the workplace, school or performing arena. Who Is this Peak Performance Training for? * Executives seeking mastery of vision and creativity * Athletes who must get and maintain that winning edge * Artists & Performers longing to stand out from the rest

* Scholars & Students suffering from test-taking anxiety * Anyone who wants to perform at their absolute optimum Did You Know? Neurofeedback is one of the vital tools used by major sports teams, Olympic champions and highly motivated and productive individuals to achieve peak performance. Several Fortune 500 companies (e.g. Hillenbrand) use neurofeedback peak performance training as part of their leadership development program. NASA trains astronauts with EEG Biofeedback to improve attention and alertness. The US Olympic Team trains athletes with general biofeedback and EEG biofeedback to improve performance. For more information, please contact The Miami Institute of Training and Neurofeedback located at 2645 Douglas Road, Suite 505, Coral Gables, Florida 33133, (305) 448-5111.

Avenue to be ‘Hurricane Highway’ to honor Howard Drive Elementary BY JASMINE BROOKS

Parents and students of Howard Drive Elementary will be excited to see changes coming down the road, literally, within the next few weeks, as Palmetto Bay Vice Mayor Brian W. Pariser has sponsored the designation of a portion of SW 77th Avenue (between SW 136th Street and SW 138th Terrace) as “Hurricane Highway” in honor of the school. Howard Drive principal Deanna Dalby was present at the May 3 village council meeting to accept the honor. “Without the support of the village, we

wouldn’t have programs like DARE, rad/KIDS, and Officer Friendly,” Dalby said. “It truly does take a village to raise a child.” Howard Drive Elementary is one of Palmetto Bay’s A-rated schools. The village requires approval by the Miami-Dade County Commission regarding the co-designation of Hurricane Highway signage along SW 77th Avenue because this thoroughfare falls under Miami-Dade’s jurisdiction. Village residents also can expect to see new street signs in coming weeks, designating “Deering Estate Way” and “Panther Parkway” in honor of Perrine

Kendall artist donates mural to Village

Coral Pines recreation building is now adorned by a tile mural donated by artist Dimitrios Gulbalis. ____________________________________ BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Kendall resident Dimitrios Gulbalis recently donated a tile painting to the Village called Birds of the Everglades. “There are areas in Pinecrest that need something,” Gulbalis says. “My main thing for the donation is to make it look nice.” He saw a need to enhance the exterior of the recreation building at Coral Pines Park, 6955 SW 104 St. “It’s a building that they rent for activities and parties,” he says. “It’s like a community center.” Gulbalis adds that the donation was an opportunity to do something for the Village. So he talked to someone who knows the mayor. “She contacted her, I met with the mayor and they liked the idea,” he says. “I tried to talk to them first before I do anything. When I know what they like, I sketch it out.” Gulbalis made sample sketches and Village officials chose the one they liked. He had to make some minor changes to the selected sketch because the officials wanted the mammals removed. “It was a fox and a raccoon,” he says. “There were empty spaces, so I had to reorganize the whole thing. I put a spoonbill in the space; blue herons, white herons and spoonbills.” That wasn’t a problem since a lot of his paintings are of birds. “I do the sketching on the computer, but I do the sample in tile,” he says. The sample measured 19 by 24 four

inches, but finished mural is five by 12 feet wide. It took almost two months to complete the project because he made a sample section of the tile mural first. “I wanted to do that before I did the larger,” Gulbalis says, adding that it’s important that he sees what the painting looks like on tile before he begins work on the actual mural. Also, Pinecrest officials wanted to see what the mural would look like before it became a permanent fixture in the park. Once the officials agreed on the painting, he went on to complete the project. “I painted the tiles, I fired the tiles, then I transported them and glazed them myself,” he says. “They are fired tiles. They go into a kiln after the painting with a glaze.” Gulbalis fired the tiles in sections to make sure the colors matched after each firing. Once the tiles were prepared, he needed to affix them to the building. He used regular mastic to affix the six by six inch tiles to the building. The advantage of the tile painting is that it is permanent. “No one will have to do anything about it because it’s outdoor tile,” he says. “Nothing will happen to it.” Pinecrest officials were quite happy with the final product, and even staged a formal unveiling and gave Gulbalis a plaque. Now he’d like to get more donations and beautify more of South MiamiDade. He already has murals at Homestead Animal Hospital and Trimline Kitchens. To see more of Gulbalis’ artwork, go to <www.artbyDG.com> and <www.customcreativetiles.com>.

Fitness Together — personal training to fit your lifestyle BY NANCY EAGLETON

Fitness Together in South Miami challenges you to ditch your current trainer, gym or program for a day and experience a different kind of personal fitness and customer service at Miami’s premier personal training studio. Fitness Together combines privacy and luxury with years of fitness experience to put the “personal” back in personal training. The certified, professional trainers at Fitness Together, 5829 SW 73 St., will help you reach your fitness goals while accommodating your busy schedule. Your personal trainer will focus entirely on you and your results while you train in your own clean, private and comfortable training suite. They promise no distractions, no crowds, no waiting for machines and no cell phones. “Fitness is for everyone, you just have to find the program that’s right for you,” said Scott Baumann, partner and general manager of Fitness Together. “Your fitness should reflect your lifestyle. Not everyone is comfortable with the big gym scene or with mass boot camps. We offer something that is truly exclusive in personal training programs.” Since no two people are alike or have the same fitness goals, no one fitness plan will

exercise and a nutritional plan. “The consult we have with a client on that first day is so important,” said Baumann. “We determine the client’s goals and conduct a comprehensive fitness assessment in order to create a personalized program that will achieve the desired results.” At Fitness Together, clients will experience a system of training that is proven to be extremely effective for fat loss and muscle gain, creating the lean and muscular shape that most people desire. “Weight training and building muscle is so important to achieve changes in the body,” said Baumann. “Muscle is the furnace of the body. When you increase muscle, you will increase metabolism.” As part of their fitness program, clients will follow a personalized nutrition plan developed by nutritionist Dr. Janet Brill and receive one-on-one nutrition counseling and motivation from a Fitness Together trainer.

“A lot of good work can go to waste with one or two really bad eating choices,” said Baumann. “The key is to eat healthy, eat light and eat often.” The seven personal trainers at Fitness Together will bring plenty of motivation along with something new and different to each of your training sessions in order to make your workout challenging, fun and effective. “It’s important to work numerous muscles and have variety in a program to achieve dramatic results in less time,” said Baumann. “We’re here to keep you on track and motivate you. We get just as excited as our clients do as they achieve their results and see changes in their bodies.” Baumann says that his clients often fall into two categories: Those who have never worked out or haven’t worked out in years; and those who have been floundering in their current exercise program and are no longer seeing results or moving forward. “Many of our clients begin a program because they have a painful motivation in their life,” explained Baumann. “Clients come because summer is coming and they feel they can’t wear a bathing suit or they want to lose weight and look great for a special event. Some want to be active with their young children and be a role model for them. Others need to lose weight for health reasons. Whatever the motivation, people want to live well and have quality in their life.” Baumann graduated from Rutgers University and has over 15 years experience in fitness. Before moving to Miami, he was a bodybuilder in New York and spent eight years as the premier trainer at one of Manhattan’s largest health clubs. His focus at Fitness Together is on you, to get the most out of your workout, your time and your life. “This is a life changing experience,” said Baumann. “Give us three months and you will see a big difference.” For information, go to <www.fitnesstogethermiami.com> or call 305-446-3665.

2010 BMW 1 Series: A smaller, cheaper Beemer Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The BMW 1 Series was introduced to the U.S. market in mid-2008 as a competitor in the luxury coupe class, but billed as a smaller, less costly Beemer with all the bells and whistles of its bigger siblings. Initially, there was only one model in the lineup, the 135i Coupe with a twin-turbocharged 300 hp. In 2009, BMW expanded the series with the 230 hp 128i and by adding convertible editions for both models, and that lineup continues for 2010. All four models are powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine mated to either a standard six-speed manual or an optional ($1,325) six-speed automatic transmission. BMW makes no bones about the intent of the 1 Series — it was designed to be a serious competitor to the front-wheel-drive Japanese, Korean and American cars in the entry luxury coupe class. And this sporty little car is doing a good job of accomplishing its mission. The 135i Convertible, clocks 0-60 mph in 5.4 sec-

onds and the top speed is electronically limited to 150 mph. For the record, the rear-wheel-drive 1 Series cars are about seven inches shorter overall than the popular BMW 3 Series and the wheelbase is four inches shorter; it’s also 2.7 inches narrower. The 128i Coupe lists for $29,400 and comes with automatic climate control; premium AM/FM/CD audio with auxiliary input jack; a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel; leatherette upholstery; cruise control; power glass sunroof; high-gloss black interior trim; rain-sensing automatic headlights; fog lights, and 205/55HR16 all-season tires on 16-inch alloy wheels. The 135i Coupe has a price tag of $35,850 and adds a twin-turbocharged engine, a firmer sport suspension and high-performance brakes; xenon headlights with adaptive light control; retractable headlight washers; Gray Poplar wood interior trim; and 18-inch alloy rims. The 128i Convertible goes for $34,000 and the 135i Convertible for $40,150. Both have basically the same equipment as their coupe counterparts, except for 17-inch wheels on the 135i. Both come with an automatic cloth folding top that goes up or down in 22 seconds, even at speeds up to 25 mph.

BMW 1 Series convertible top goes up or down in 22 seconds, even at speeds up to 25 mph. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– A Sport Package for $1,300 for the 128i enhanced aesthetics, while the Sports models includes sport suspension, sport Suspension offers higher traction and seats, M-style steering wheel, Shadowline reduced body roll with unique wheels and trim and wider tires on 17-inch rims. Maccabees, Maccabettes bring dads, kids together for fun Linda K. Landy ALPER JCC NEWS Ask any parent and they will tell you that they struggle to spend quality time with their children. First you have to eliminate the hours when mom and dad are at work and the kids are at school. Subtract the time spent driving carpool, commuting, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning and folding laundry. Then there are the inevitable sports leagues, music lessons and dance classes. School steals more time with homework, studying and the dreaded group projects. Oh, don’t forget the football and baseball weekends. Okay, somehow you have found a few hours to spend with your kids, but wait, they are locked in their room playing video games, glued to the television or sleeping

over at a friend’s house. Often, it is even more difficult for fathers to spend quality time with their kids. My husband discovered that I never complained when he went off to play golf — as long as he took the boys with him. I realize that golf is not for everyone. How else can fathers spend quality time with their kids? Let me tell you about the Maccabees and Maccabettes program at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center which provides a unique opportunity for fathers and their children to spend quality time together while enhancing their Jewish identity. Fathers (or grandfather or surrogate father-figure) and children— sons or daughters, kindergarten through grade five — plan fun activities and events. Groups are organized based on grade level and gender of the child. The purpose of the Maccabee/ Maccabette program is to enhance the father/child relationship. The program focuses on the importance of the role of a father in a child’s development and is designed to reinforce Jewish

ideals, values and history. New chapters are formed each fall. Families often recruit their friends and join the program as a group. Those who don’t have their own group are placed into an age appropriate group by the JCC. Although one dad is enlisted to lead the group, each father picks a month and plans the activities. The beauty of Maccabees/Maccabettes is the flexibility of the program. The dads and kids tailor the activities to the interests of the group. Roger Snyder is a JCC member who has a child in pre-school, a daughter in Maccabettes, an older son and a grown daughter. “Maccabettes gives me an opportunity to spend one on one time and make a connection without competition from the other children,” said Snyder. “I really look forward to the meetings because it is away from the chaos and it is a great time for us to be together. Actually my favorite part is our talks going to and coming home from the

meetings and just discussing what we did.” This year his chapter made pillows and is bringing them to the seniors at The Palace as a mitzvah project, decorated tee shirts which the girls and their dads wear whenever they get together and are planning a trip to a firehouse where one of the dads is a firefighter. The girls like Macabettes because they like to spend time with their dads and their friends —and they love the craft projects. Can you imagine the sight of the dads ironing the decorations onto the tee shirts? The highlight of the year is when all of the Maccabees and Maccabettes chapters get together and travel to the Circle F Dude Ranch in central Florida. It is 48 hours of campfires, songs, racing cardboard boats the kids build themselves, horseback riding and more. The chapters also get together during the year to ride the airboats at Billie Swamp Safari in the Everglades. We stand prepared to battle oil spill threat FWC REPORT

BY RODNEY BARRETO

Chairman, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

We often take for granted all the things that make our life easy until something happens to make us sit up and take notice. This happened in late April, when the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico brought us all to attention. So far, Florida’s fish and wildlife remain safe from the impact of oil coming ashore, and we hope for the best. The longer that oil stays out at sea, the better it is for our estuaries and marshes where the fish and wildlife spawn and nest. We are still the Fishing Capital of the World. It took thousands of years for folks to realize the thick, tar-like substance bubbling up out of the earth might have some use in our lives. That discovery fueled a centuries of new inventions and technology to enable people to live longer and in comfort. Part of the price was a contaminated environment.

We are now a society dependent upon that petroleum, but with that dependence comes the certainty that we must take responsibility for any consequences. It is true that BP leads the effort to contain and clean up the spill from its wellhead, but others have stepped forth to assist as well. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is working closely with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the lead agency in the state for responding to the oil spill. Both the FWC and DEP are involved in gathering pre-assessment data, along with many other agencies, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. At the FWC, we stand ready to minimize harm to wildlife affected by the oil spill, if oil should come ashore. The FWC is involved in the strategic planning that will attempt to secure the spill to prevent damage to Florida and its outstanding resources. Our scientists are mapping highpriority fish and wildlife habitats to help focus protective measures, and they are conducting biological assessments to

establish a baseline for measuring the severity of potential harm to fish and wildlife. Volunteers immediately began calling the FWC and other agencies to find out how they could help when news broke that the oil could reach Florida. I am encouraged by this outpouring of support, and the FWC thanks all those who make wildlife a priority. However, this crisis situation differs from other disasters we’ve faced in Florida, from hurricanes and flooding to droughts and fires. If an oiled fish washes ashore or wildlife covered in oil appears distressed, some of us will be tempted to rush out and rescue the animal. However, that will not be the best course of action for either the wildlife or the Good Samaritan. This crisis involves hazardous materials that need to be handled by properly trained personnel for the safety of you and for the survival of the wildlife you think you might be saving. Attempting to rescue wildlife distressed by the oil could further distress the animal. Your presence could have the opposite of the intended effect. Distressed wildlife can be dangerous as they fight to survive. You also are putting yourself at risk by touching the oil. Nobody wins in this situation, and while our well-intentioned actions may seem helpful, they are not. It is best to let the trained professionals take over, and there are plenty of them and even more coming on board to receive the

necessary training to assist. All oil-contaminated wildlife will be handled by trained workers. As we go through the long process of preparing, protecting and then cleaning up any potential oil residue that reaches our shores, there will be plenty of opportunities to assist. Volunteer Florida is an active participant in the oil spill response and encourages those who want to assist to get involved locally through affiliated prelandfall beach cleanups, fundraising and assisting with the needs of all the organizations involved in the response. Remember all beach cleanups should come through organized efforts. For more information on how to help, visit <www.volunteerfloridadisaster.org>. We’re all in this together. The FWC will do everything possible to protect Florida’s fish and wildlife, and that’s why I’ve called for an emergency meeting with our agency’s staff. This meeting is unprecedented, but so is the oil spill that could possibly affect our natural resources. The meeting will be May 19 at 10 a.m. at Tradewinds Resort in St. Pete Beach. Visit <MyFWC.com>, <http://www.myfwc.com/> for more information. Florida’s fish and wildlife have the very best resources working for their protection and survival.
