Palmetto High Class of 2010 is one of distinction
Publisher’s note: I recently attended graduation day ceremonies for the Palmetto High School Class of 2010. As an alumnus of the school, I found Principal Howard Weiner’s commencement address both important and moving. We reprint those remarks here in salute to all of South Florida’s graduating high school students. — Grant Miller • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • BY HOWARD WEINER Principal, Palmetto Senior High School
I am honored to welcome each of you to the 50th commencement exercise in the storied history of Miami Palmetto Senior High. Today, we honor your completion of the journey from freshman to senior and the accomplishments that you have achieved along the way. This class, representing a half century of educational excellence, has accumulated numerous accolades and awards and I take great pride in highlighting those accomplishments. This class produced 15 Silver Knight nominees, a Silver Knight winner in New Media (Noah Gray) and Drama (Veronica Rigl) and one Honorable Mention in Speech (Michael Gray). In addition, this class contains four National Merit Scholars. Each of these individuals scored in the top two percent nationally on their 11th grade PSAT. The following

BRANDI APPLEBAUM Palmetto High School senior Brandi Applebaum’s junior year was jam-packed. It started with the putting together a daylong PAWareness Fair to raise awareness about animals. The project was for Applebaum’s Girl Scout Gold Award. She worked on the project with Carley Schleien and Lauren Gutlohn, all members of Troop 317. “Carley, Lauren and I love animals and we wanted to do something that would raise awareness about the number of animals that are abused and abandoned,” Applebaum says. The girls contacted Jen Ford of Paws4You Rescue. Ford became the girls’ advisor on the project. “She kept us on track and very kindly gave us some contacts,” Applebaum says. The girls worked on the Gold Award project for more than six months. When it was completed, they had each put in more than the 65 hours required for the award. “We got vendors from dog companies and we contacted rescue services and Miami Dade County to educate the public,” Applebaum says. The Pet Fair was held last October at Bet Shira. The site was significant because there was a large field, it was close to Palmetto High and the girls hoped it would generate interest in opening a dog park
within the Village, especially since Mayor Cindy Lerner was the master of ceremonies. “We had cat networks come and one lady showed up with her bird,” Applebaum says. “We had a dog trainer and we also had someone talk about the importance of learning CPR for your pet.” Since it was the first time such an event was held, Applebaum says they were hoping to attract 500 people. They were thrilled when 500-700 attended. “They enjoyed being able to go somewhere and just hang with their dogs and other pet owners,” she says. “There are not a lot of places you can take your dog.” The girls have put together a book on how to organize another PAWareness Fair. They hope another Girl Scout troop will take on the program for its Gold Award project. Along with being a Girl Scout, Applebaum is involved with her youth group, USY, based at Bet Shira. She has also volunteered to help younger children at the temple. Applebaum is a regular at the Bet Shira Mitzvah Days. Her other community volunteer work includes Habitat for Humanity. She has also grown her hair long several times and cut off at least 10 inches for Locks of Love. At Palmetto High, she is a member of the French Honor Society, the English Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, the Photo Club, Key Club and the Literary Society. She recently received an award from the Community Partnership Foundation for her community service. “I was the first winner of the award,” she says. “It was given to me at my temple. The education center there nominated me. It was for leadership and community service and giving back to the community.” For fun, Applebaum is a trapeze artist. She uses the trapeze at Bayside. “I’ve been doing it there for three years now,” she says. She enjoys the practice and learning new tricks on the trapeze. “For us, it’s to practice and learn how to do tricks; there are no shows,” she says. “I’d love to keep it as a hobby, but if there was an opportunity to tour with Cirque du Soleil, I’d jump at it. But ultimately I’d like to go into the world of fashion.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld
MEGAN ZUCKER Coral Reef High School senior Megan Zucker already has approximately 750 community service hours, with a year of high school remaining. Many of those hours come from her involvement in Impact Theater, sponsored by the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization based at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center. The plays help teach the community, middle and high school students lessons about the Holocaust and how we must be tolerant of each other. “I’ve been appointed to be the student producer,” Zucker says. Impact Theater stages one production a year. It has become so well known that they have been asked to do traveling shows. “But because the plays have been written and acted by high school students, it’s difficult to move them around because of school,” Zucker says. The teens begin working on the next show in August and September. There are four productions of the show each March. “It is a student-written play,” Zucker says. “Once we get a main idea, we start writing and developing characters. It’s a long process.” Zucker says they throw many ideas on
the table and go through them all. “We always like to focus on situations that may seem tough and hard to come out of,” she says. This past March, they did a production about a group of people at an airport who are delayed. That delay brings out their prejudices and they start blaming other people for their delay. At the end they realize they are in the wrong. Along with her involvement in Impact Theater, Zucker is also involved at her school. She was vice president of the class of 2010 and next year she was appointed treasurer. She’s also involved in the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. Through the SHS, she tutors fellow students in Spanish. “I just help them learn to speak and write in Spanish, and to develop skills to learn the language better,” she says. “I’ve been taking Spanish since I was in elementary school.” Now that she’s officially a senior in high school, Zucker is looking at colleges. “I’ve become interested in schools like Tulane, Cornell and Emory, but I’m passionate about UF because my mom and sister went there,” she says. Zucker is considering majoring in occupational therapy. Her interest in the profession stemmed from something she saw on television about a boy who played hockey all his life, but an accident severed his spinal cord. “I watched how the occupational therapist helped him get back his skills,” she says. Zucker is the vice chair of Wheel Charity Foundation, working to collect donations and organizing charity events to raise awareness and funds for people confined to wheel chairs. She became interested in doing something like this because her mom is in a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis. During the summer, Zucker is a junior camp counselor at the JCC. She attended summer camp there as a young girl and volunteered before being hired as a counselor. “I love working with kids,” she says. “I always come home and have the funniest stories. They do the funniest things.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

JACQUELYN RODRIGUEZ Jacquelyn Rodriguez just graduated from Westminster Christian School. She accumulated almost 300 community service hours
during her high school career. Last summer, she went to St. Louis on a mission trip with the Old Cutler Presbyterian Church. “We tutored inner city kids at a Christian school there and we did service projects,” Rodriguez says. “We would tutor them in the morning and in the afternoon we would do a work project.” Those projects included cleaning out a cluttered school room. “We changed it from a room of junk to something that they could actually use,” she says. “I thought it was a really good experience.” The mission trip taught her to be thankful for what she has and how her life is safe compared to theirs. One morning, the children were asked to raise their hand if they had heard a gunshot or if they knew someone who had been shot. “Every one of those kids raised their hand,” Rodriguez says. “Everyone had been exposed to some sort of violence. A lot of them had a family member who had gotten hurt because of a gunshot.” The experience was so enlightening for her that she hopes to make the trip again this summer.
Last summer she also worked at the Baptist Hospital Endoscopy Center and put in almost 100 hours. “I was a clerical worker; I organized some records they had,” she says. “I helped take the discharged patients downstairs. I would take them to their rides. I also ran errands for the people that worked there. I did whatever needed to be done.” She also volunteered at the Aqua Kids Summer Camp. “I did it for about three weeks; it was cool,” Rodriguez says. “They were a handful, but it was great. They ranged from three to eight years old. The older ones who knew how to swim and I would give them advice on how to improve their strokes.” For the first time in her school career, Rodriguez will be attending a school other than Westminster. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study economics and business. “Everyone in my family has studied accounting and I see it as a job that will be stable and one I could get somewhere with,” she says, adding that she realized she enjoyed economics when she took government and economics during her senior year. While others struggled with the class, she
found it easy. “It had the math I’m good at and it had the politics that I could relate to,” she says. “I’m interested in politics. I was interested in political science, but then I found out how much reading and writing it required.” Last year Rodriguez was the swim team co-captain. She has been on the Westminster swim team since she was in the seventh grade. Last season she swam the 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle. At districts she swam the 100 back and the 200 IM and the 200 relay at states. “The 200 meter free relay went to states. I got to swim in that. That was really cool,” she says. “We did really well considering how competitive it is.” She was also a member of the school’s chamber orchestra, playing the violin. With that group, she played at the Lincoln Center. “It was pretty cool. One night we went to hear the New York Philharmonic play at the Lincoln center. The next afternoon we were playing at the Lincoln center,” she says. “We’re the first orchestra from South Florida to play at the Lincoln.” By Linda Rodriguez Bernfeld

CLASS OF 2010,
from page 1
students are our National Merit Scholars: Jennifer Dimino, Elizabeth Kobert, Molly Niedbala and Elaine Zou Furthermore; this class produced two Coca Cola Regional winners, four Ford Salute to Education recipients, five Perrine/Cutler Ridge Rotary Scholarship Winners, five Pinecrest Rotary Winners, one William Simon Award recipient, one Comcast Leader and Achiever Award, and one Metro PCS Award winner. I want you to know that this class has distinguished itself in more ways than one. Let me share some important facts with you. Ninety-five percent of this class will be pursuing post secondary education opportunities; 72 percent will be attending a four-year college, 23 percent will be attending community colleges around the country, two percent will be attending Vocational/Technical schools, two percent will be joining the military, and one percent will be entering the work force. Our 50th graduating class received 365 scholarship offers totaling a value of more hand $13 million. Included in this number are scholarships in art, music, theater and stagecraft. In athletics, 26 Panthers are college bound and are scholarship recipients. But I am not done; please add in an additional $4.3 million in Bright Futures
Scholarships and you arrive at a grand total of more than $17 million in scholarship offers to the class of 2010. Quite an accomplishment since this represents the largest pool of scholarship dollars offered to a graduating class in the entire 50-year history of Palmetto Senior High School. The Class of 2010 was accepted to a record 203 colleges and its graduates will be attending colleges in 38 states, while on the international level, graduates of this class will be attending colleges in Argentina, Chile, Holland, Japan, Italy and Switzerland. Now, please realize that performance, both inside and outside of the classroom, is the hallmark of a graduating class of distinction. And once again our Panthers have delivered. Under the leadership of our outstanding athletic director, Ms. Yvette McKinney, the Miami Herald has once again recognized our school for having the number one high school sports program in Miami-Dade County for the 2009-10 schoolyear. The lynchpin of this recognition was achieved with a state championship in Boys’ swimming. But this was no ordinary state championship. For the first time in 40 years, this championship was won by a public high school, and that public high school was Palmetto Senior High. But as I said before, Panthers excel in all areas. Year after year, we are consistent in our performance. And speaking of consistency, we have a graduating senior, Melissa
June 21 - July 4, 2010
Covert, who has not missed a day of school in 12 years. If Melisa’s attendance record astounds you, please ready yourself for the following. There are three members of the Class of 2010 — Brandon Quintana, Mark Rodriguez and Melanie Vilches – who have not missed a day of school in 13 years; that’s 2,340 consecutive days of attendance from kindergarten through grade 12. What an amazing feat! It is plain to see that our 50th graduating class has left an indelible mark which will be difficult, but not impossible, for future graduating classes to match. This class is now at the finish line of a long and challenging race. But as you cross one finish line a starting line will always appear on the horizon. And that is where each of you stands today. You are ready, willing and able to start a new adventure that we as parents call life. With that in mind, I would like to take the liberty to share some observations I have made over the past four years as I have watched you walk the halls of Palmetto High. You are the connected generation. You’re forever connected to your cell phones, your IPODS and your social network websites, whether it be Facebook or MySpace. You live in an information age which is instantaneous, global, unforgiving and isolated from your surroundings. The pace by which you interact with the world around you is at breakneck, or should I say at broadband speed. Why not consider the following as a sug-
gestion from someone who sees unlimited potential in you and your future aspirations. Put the cell phone down and replace it with a face-to-face conversation with a friend or family member. Unplug the IPOD and listen to the world around you. The sound of the wind, birds chirping in the trees or the uniqueness of a simple walk around the block will serve notice that sharing yourself with the natural beauty of the world can enrich your life and well being. Divorce yourself for a moment from your news feed, don’t worry about updating your status; why not sit for a moment, take out a pen and a piece of paper and write a letter to a friend or a note to your parents to say thank you for everything, including bringing you to this important moment in your life. By disconnecting yourself from the technological world, you can reconnect yourself to the real world. Try it, you might actually enjoy it. And now the time has come for us to go our separate ways. I have enjoyed our time together and I have been enriched by the experience. I have been uplifted by your energy, your commitment to excellence and your spirit of community. My hope for each of you is a life filled with peace, prosperity and happiness. I am proud to have been your principal and I will always hold you close to my heart. Thank you.

If you can hear the whispers below the din of panic, you know that the recent financial and housing collapses have actually created some amazing opportunities for smart investors. Low interest rates and depressed property values have combined in an environment favorable for long-term gains. It may not be for everyone, but if you’re in the right financial position, you have plenty of options. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to invest, and it’s the wrong way that led so many to suffer in the recent housing crisis. Don’t think about investing in real estate until you’ve saved up for your nest egg and
have held or reduced your expenses to keep it growing. Your money doesn’t work for you unless it’s your money. Similarly, don’t begin your investment adventure until you’ve polished up your credit score. The best opportunities go to those with upfront cash and excellent credit. Maximize your borrowed capital by making sure you get the lowest interest rates and best terms. It then follows that you should not over-borrow. Real estate markets are continually cycling up and down. Learn the lessons of the recent debacle, and don’t over-leverage yourself to the point you can’t survive a down period in the cycle. If you’re smart about it, you won’t get rich quick, but you will get rich right! Mike and Lynda Morgan may be contacted at the Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Offices at 12155 S. Dixie Hwy., 305-253-2800 or by email at <mmorgan321@aol.com>.

Sports Grill has served great wings and the community for 20 years BY NANCY EAGLETON
You can always count on any one of the five Sports Grill locations for the best chicken wings in Miami, a cold beer, a game on the TV, good friends and good times. Support from the community is what has kept Sports Grill going and growing since the first location opened on Sunset Drive over 20 years ago. The Sports Grill team says that community support goes both ways. “Each member of the team helps to keep Sports Grill involved in the community that it serves, said Eric Haas, owner of Sports Grill. “We all grew up with a sense of community and feel it’s important to support the schools and youth organizations, churches and charities. Haas’ partners in the Sports Grill organization are Marshall “Butch Labuzan IV and Craig Pezoldt, who along with regional manager Mike “Spike Anderson, all graduated from Palmetto High School. Therefore, donating to local school fundraisers and sponsoring sports teams is a top priority. Sports Grill proudly supports such teams as Palmetto High lacrosse, Sunset High volleyball, Killian High baseball and the Southwest High swim team. Sports Grill has received special recognition from Sunset and Killian for employing local high school students and one of those long-time employees was recently promoted to manager of the Bird Road location. Anderson says he always says “yes when it comes to supporting youth sports groups. “We sponsor athletic teams such as Howard Palmetto baseball and softball, Suniland youth roller hockey, and the football and cheerleading programs at the Kendall Boys and Girls Club, he said. “Our donations help these clubs with their
G N I N DI OUT equipment, uniforms and more. Supporting and participating in events that raise money to cure cancer such as the Palmetto High School Golf Tournament benefitting breast cancer and the Baptist Hospital Relay for Life are top priorities for the Sports Grill, especially since Haas is a throat cancer survivor and Labuzan’s wife, Laurel, is a breast cancer survivor. Haas is the president-elect of the Deering Estate Foundation and has been an active member on the board of directors since 1998. He has chaired the annual Deering Seafood Festival for the past four years and the popular Sports Grill “Landlubbers booth is manned by Labuzan and Pezoldt each year. “Deering Estate at Cutler is the jewel of South Dade and is the community’s back yard on the water, he said. “Deering is 455 acres of the most beautiful property in Dade County and it’s available to everyone. It’s very important to support and preserve it. As a member of Old Cutler Presbyterian Church since 1988, Haas has served as Deacon, event volunteer and the whole Sports Grill team has served up their famous burgers and wings at the church’s annual family picnic. The organization that receives Pezoldt’s support is Good Hope Equestrian Center, an equine rehabilitation center that has served the needs of Miami-Dade County’s individuals with disabilities since 1999. During the last few years, Anderson has also joined Labuzan for the long ride and Pezoldt serves as their support crew. The team has plans to participate in other MS rides this year. “We know that that riding 150 miles is nowhere near as difficult as confronting a lifetime with multiple sclerosis, said Labuzan. Labuzan also sponsors the The Keg South/Sports Grill Annual Golf Tournament that benefits the Boy Scouts of America in honor of a friend, Andy Krall. To date, this fundraiser has raised $25,000$30,000 which has been donated to Trexler Scout Reservation, a Boy Scout and Eagle Scout camp in Pennsylvania. This year’s 11th annual tournament is scheduled for
Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Palmetto Golf Course. “The money raised has been used to build an aquatics center, purchase paddle boats and canoes, new tents, cots and much more, said Labuzan. “A portion of the funds each year also goes to fund underprivileged kids so they can experience the summer camp. Luncheon honors Pinecrest Pioneers
Pictured in front of the special “birthday” cake are (l-r) Jim Sprague, Lorenzo Berry, Dorothy Flynn, Dorothy Culbreath and Mary Horton. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY GLORIA BURNS
Executive Director, Community Foundation of Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, Village staff and many volunteers came together in the Hibiscus Room in Pinecrest Gardens recently for another wonderful luncheon for the Village of Pinecrest Pioneers. Whole Foods Grocery provided a delicious buffet and a large birthday cake for the occasion and several volunteers brought covered dishes to complement an already great buffet. After Mayor Lerner welcomed the Pioneers, who ranged in age from 91-95 years old, the crowd was treated to performances by members of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board — Leia Schwartz, Eileen Faradji and Rachel Millhauser. The talented trio individually sang songs they

Pioneers sharing their stories and enjoying the day included Jim Sprague, the oldest at 95; Lorenzo “Wimpy” Berry, the most colorful member of the group; Dorothy Flynn, Dorothy Culbreath and Mary Horton. Among the many enjoying the day with the pioneers, were Councilman Bob Ross; Community Foundation of Pinecrest board member Jennifer Wollmann; historian Kathy Hersh, Pinecrest Gardens executive director Alana Perez; Karen Mashburn, Barbara Cameron, Patricia Kyle Lawrence, Sharon Carpenter, Eileen Faradii, Mary Ann Konopa, Martha Young, Tom Butler and Kathleen Bulger.

Christ Fellowship graduates shine in the Class of 2010 BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Going to the right pre-kindergarten and elementary school can lay the foundation for the future. Parents who chose Christ Fellowship Academy (CFA) for their children have reason to believe they made the right choice, especially if they have a child in the Class of 2010. Many of those students were leaders at their respective high schools. Former CFA student Chuck Woodard was valedictorian at Westminster Christian. Chuck Woodard –––––––––––––– Also from CFA was the second-ranked student, Justin Moo Young. Formerly known as Perrine Baptist Academy, CFA’s motto is “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow.” “It laid the building blocks,” Woodard said. “I remember they had a Justin Moo Young
really good academic curriculum.” Woodard started in pre-K 3 and attended kindergarten and first grade at CFA, then transferred to F.C. Martin for second and third grades before going back to CFA to finish elementary school. He attributes much of the success to the small classes. “That’s a big thing for me,” he said. Woodward will attend the University of Miami with a double major in finance and accounting plus a minor in Spanish. Another CFA graduate, Tyler Kalbac, received the Silver Knight for Athletics. He just graduated from Palmer Trinity School where he played baseball and soccer in 11th grade and football his senior year, despite several surgeries to deal Tyler Kalbac –––––––––––– with ulcerative colitis. “I’m completely done with all of my surgeries and I’m doing great,” he said. Kalbac also won the National Federation of High Schools Spirit of Sport of Award and an award from the Great Comeback Foundation.
He recently looked through a photo album of his days at CFA. “There was a good group of us,” he said. “To have so many people who love you and support you, and are by your side, it makes you feel special, it encourages you to learn and to grow.” Kalbac will attend the University of Virginia with his sister, Brittney, and plans a career in medicine. His younger sisters also attended CFA. Debbie Antonelli sent her three children to Christ Fellowship. She and her husband hadn’t planned on keeping them there through sixth grade, but the children did so well they stayed for 15 years. “I called it a diamond in the rough in Miami,” Antonelli said. Her daughter Jenny graduated from Palmetto High and then attended St. Mary’s College, where she was junior and senior class president and a University of Norte Dame cheerleader. Jenny Antonelli just graduated from UM with a master’s in broadcast journalism. Son Chris attends Purdue University studying to become a physical therapist. Youngest son John just graduated from Westminster where he played
baseball and won the Most Outstanding Senior Award. Mrs. Antonelli used to substitute at CFA and liked the fact that you could be Catholic and teach at the Baptist school. “It was a strong, very structured environment,” she said. “It was very strong in the basics.” CFA graduate Laurence Smith said John Antonelli Perrine Baptist Academy –––––––––––––– shaped him into what he is today. “The school was just a friendly atmosphere,” he said. His best memory was the time he played drums in the chapel as part of a youth band that he and friends formed. Smith graduated in May from Westwood Christian. His mom, Regina Smith, loved the fact that the CFA faculty always was there, willing and able to talk, if there were any concerns about her children. “It was just a great experience,” she said.

Clothes, furniture are good deals at Again and Again Consignment BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Looking for designer brand blouses, but can’t afford the designer prices? A visit to Again and Again Consignment might be just the ticket. The stock at Again and Again Consignment includes many designer items that can be had for a fraction of the retail price. Although most of the items are used, there are some that were never worn. Again and Again can also be the place to sell your lightly used non-designer clothing, the crib the baby grew out of or that designer handbag that you just don’t like anymore, but is in great condition. Jennifer Allen, who owns the store with her husband Rick, says she takes clothing for everyone — infant, women, and babies – as well as shoes and household accessories. “It does not need to be designer, but it does need to be in excellent condition,” she says. “I do have a designer showcase for purses and wallets, and there is a rack for everyday purses. There is a showcase for jewelry and a special baby room with different things you need for the baby. I have all of that in the store.” Allen actually ran out of room in the storefront at 17005 S. Dixie Hwy., so she rented a second storefront for furniture. It’s only a couple of doors down from the primary shop.
Jennifer Allen, owner of Again and Again Consignment. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– All types of furniture are available, including want a king bedroom set and I don’t have one end tables, living room sets, dining room sets in stock, I’ll try to find it for them.” and bedroom sets. The store is set up to make the furniture “We have just about any odd-and-end look attractive and enticing. piece you may need to add to your home’s “The dining room table is not just sitting décor,” she says. “And I have a honey want there, it is set for dinner,” she says. “As far as list; if someone comes in and says I really pricing, it may be more than somewhere else,
but you’re going to pay for what you get. I have put my heart and soul into my store.” So do employees Bonnie Brooks, Tara Ilvio and Melody Legacy. Allen says they keep things going at the shop, making sure everything is set up beautifully and kept neat and clean. “I can honestly say they run this place for me,” she says. The store is important to her. While growing up, she shopped at consignment stores, so when the Cutler Bay store she visited to buy children’s clothes went up for sale, it didn’t take her very long to decide to buy it. That store was 700 square feet. Now I’m at 3,000 square feet, with a second store for just furniture.” Allen says she loves the excitement of coming to work every day and seeing what people have brought to her store to sell. “This is like Christmas every day,” she says. “I never know what is coming in,” However, Allen does have high standards; clothes have to be freshly washed and ironed, and on hangers. All items go on display for three months. Merchandise that doesn’t sell is down to half price for a month. The owner of the merchandise receives 40 percent of the sale. The split on furniture is 50-50. “You can use the money as credit in the store or you can take a check,” Allen says.

The team at Restored Digital Solutions can help your business go green and save some green with its recycled equipment and document management consulting services.
BY NANCY EAGLETON
Restored Digital Solutions provides South Florida businesses, big and small, with highquality restored copiers, printers and fax machines at affordable prices. The company’s restoration process ensures the highest level of equipment performance, its ecofriendly solutions can save companies thousands of dollars and its superior customer service separates it from the competition. “Our quality recycled equipment can cost 30-40 percent less than new machines and we can meet or even exceed the new equipment guarantee,” said Gustavo Hermida, President and CEO, who runs Restored Digital Solutions with business partner, Mike Martin, vice president of service and operations. Restored Digital Solutions (RDS) buys top-notch equipment that has reached the end of a short lease agreement or has been repossessed. The company carries 800 to 1,000 world class brand machines, including copiers by Canon, Toshiba, Konica Minolta and Ricoh, in its 20,000 square foot warehouse located in the Doral area. All of the equipment goes through a rigorous 77-point restoration certification process to return it to its original condition. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, RDS has developed some best practice solutions to increase office efficiency and help companies grow. To determine your company’s equipment and technology needs, RDS begins with a consultation. During this process, your company’s current printing and copying costs are analyzed and a Managed Print Services Report is generated. This report introduces cost efficient digital document management solutions and incorporates green concepts that promote less printing. “Business strategies and technology are changing and companies need to keep up,” said Hermida. “For example, the medical field has to convert to digital records over the next few years, as mandated by the federal
government. We have solutions to help offices accomplish this and if they convert soon, they can realize the benefit right away and also receive the rebates offered by the government.” RDS understands the challenges that businesses are faced with in today’s economy, which is why the company offers innovative and flexible financing programs. “Credit is tight and small companies often can’t qualify for the financing, so we do our own financing. When the banks say no, we say yes,” said Hermida. RDS equipment is backed by its Platinum Maintenance Agreement, an all-inclusive service agreement that provides clients with a fixed, known monthly cost. The agreement includes all of the equipment consumables, such as toner, provides regular proactive maintenance to minimize any equipment downtime and guarantees a two to four-hour response time on service calls. If equipment cannot be repaired on the spot, RDS will supply a free loaner immediately. If RDS cannot maintain your office equipment in excellent working order, it will be replaced with a comparable printer or copier system. The goal at RDS is to minimize your worry and maximize your productivity. “We pride ourselves with extraordinary customer service and that’s the part that cannot be matched,” said Hermida. “Restore, reuse and recycle” is the motto at RDS. Not only does restored equipment meet today’s business needs, it keeps machines out of landfills and reduces the need for raw materials to produce more. The print and document management solutions offered at RDS are not only cost effective, but also eco-friendly and can transform offices into paperless environments. Eagle Scout projects increase the usage of nature preserve BY NATALIE CAMPANERIA
The old adage of “if you build it, they will come” seems to be true at Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center. During the past year, four Boy Scouts and volunteers from Troop 616 completed their Eagle Scout projects at the park. Castellow Hammock is one of the first environmental education centers in Miami-Dade County and offers programs for home-school groups, public schools, Scouts and civic organizations. The park is getting more use, especially from large groups since the improvements have been completed, according to Roger Hammer, the onsite park ranger. George B. Casey moved the Fire Ring used by groups to a safer area; he enlarged the size of the ring and built a horseshoe shaped arrangement of bench seating around the fire pit to accommodate those large groups. Months later, Patrick Walkington enhanced the pit by permanently cementing the stones that encircle the fire ring. Mario A. Cuello built and installed a
self-standing roofed wooden information kiosk. The new kiosk is located in the Scouts and overnight camping area. It is intended to house general Scouting and safety information, as well as water buckets. Julian Enjamio and his helpers built two fences. The first and longer of the two fences dresses up the pathway that leads to the nature center and serves to “funnel” visitors to the center. The second and smaller fence escorts visitors into the nature trail in the natural hammock portion of the park. Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center is a 112-acre park and preserve located at 22301 SW 162 Ave. Boy Scout Troop 616 is chartered to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 12125 SW 107 Ave. in Kendall. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Scout George Casey prepares to work on Fire Ring at Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center.

Christ the King Church will sponsor a Rubber Duck Race on July 4 Christ The King Church will sponsor a rubber duck race on July 4 that will benefit Habitat for Humanity and Pinecrest Elementary School. Numbered rubber ducks will be launched from church property, 11295 SW 57 Ave., into the Snapper Creek Canal and then cheered on by participants who have “adopted” or bought the ducks’ numbers for $2 each. Those holding adoption tag numbers that match the first six ducks to cross the finish line will receive prizes. People do not need to be present to win. “In these struggling times, we felt this would be an opportunity to continue to be generous as God is first generous to us,” said Kent Lee, senior pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church. “As we talked more about the idea of a duck race, the circle grew to include Mayor Cindy Lerner and she made us aware of the needs of education dollars for our schools. Pinecrest Elementary School being the closest to our ministry location became an obvious recipient. “Also we are active as a congregation with Habitat for Humanity. The economy certainly has made housing an issue for many. We hope through people “adopting” a duck that we can make a difference by extending the proceeds gained to these worthy recipients.” Lee also said he hopes to make the Duck Race into an annual event that will support different charities each year. “As a congregation, we want to do things to support community needs and help make a difference in the lives of individuals,” he said. “We hope it will grow and allow us to support different charities that are making a difference in the world.” Lee added that Carol and Ed Williamson,

of the Williamson Automotive Group, are sponsoring the Duck Race. “We are grateful for their partnership,” said Lee. “This event would not be possible without their sponsorship.” Lee said the Duck Race will be conducted as part of the congregation’s annual “potluck” luncheon following the 10 a.m. service, when the church will recognize active military service members connected to the church. The transfer of title to a property, either voluntarily or involuntarily, is considered a sale. If the property is sold, either by short sale or foreclosure, the property owner may be subject to taxes, even if at a loss. The following are five commonly asked questions: 1. Will I have to pay income taxes if my “Principal Residence” is foreclosed? Is there a difference if I short sale it? If it is the Principal Residence, then the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 will apply. A lender that has foreclosed or agreed to a short sale will forgive or cancel part of the debt owed by the property owner. In other words, the lender will agree to let the property go for less than what is owed and that difference will normally be forgiven or cancelled. This difference must be included as income on your tax return and is taxable. However, the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act allows the exclusion of certain cancelled debt if it involves your principal residence. Therefore, if your principal residence is involved there is light at the end of the tunnel, and you may not have to pay additional taxes for income you really did not have the fortune of seeing. 2. If the forgiven debt can be excluded under the Act, do I still have to report it in my tax returns? The amount the lender forgives must be reported on Form 982 and attached to your tax return. Your accountant will be able to advise you properly. At this point, you should go see your accountant and if you do not have one, get one. 3. How will I know how much debt is forgiven or cancelled? The Lender will be required to send the property owner a Form
1099-C, Cancellation of Debt by February of 2010. The amount forgiven will be in box 2 of the Form 1099-C. Once again, go to your accountant for guidance on how to prepare you tax returns accordingly. 4.What about my investment property, will I have to pay taxes? There is no relief for debts on vacation homes and other second homes or rental properties. The Mortgage Debt Relief Act only applies to principal residences. Therefore, when and if you decide to walk away from your investment property, it is best to seek legal advice and tax advice. Plan ahead don’t wait to get the Form 1099. 5.What if I get the 1099 and I do not have the money to pay the taxes I owe the IRS? The IRS may offer a deferred payment up to 6 months. In the event, there is just no ability to make payment, Bankruptcy will be the next and final alternative. The taxes due may be included and discharged in Bankruptcy. Foreclosure, Short Sale, Loan Modification, Bankruptcy is not easy to deal with. There are so many that are falling apart as a result of the stress that come along with it. Unfortunately, I am a witness to the heartache. So many, are not just losing their homes, they are also losing their marriages, their health, their families. There are alternatives for everyone. 2010 Honda Element goes to the dogs Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS To say that the 2010 Honda Element is going to the dogs is a bit of an overstatement, but the new Dog Friendly pet accommodation system is a piece of optional equipment that dog owners will find quite useful and to their liking. The equipment is designed to improve safety, comfort and convenience for dogs and their owners. In essence, it assures secure transportation of a dog in the cargo area of the Element in a nylon-webbed car kennel. In daily operation, the car kennel helps prevent a dog from interfering with the driver in traffic by keeping the pet properly restrained and out of reach of the driver. In the event of a collision, the kennel helps restrain the dog behind the rear seats, reducing the chance that the pet will be injured or injure humans during a crash. The Dog Friendly equipment also aids a
pet’s comfort by providing a soft floor surface for the dog’s legs and paws, along with a dedicated fan and a spill resistant water source and easy-to-clean surfaces. There’s also a ramp for easier entry and exit that stows beneath the bed. It can be accessed when the rear tailgate is down. The Dog Friendly equipment package adds $995 to the base price of an Element. The Honda Element received numerous upgrades in the 2009 model year, including a new exterior appearance and a refreshed interior design. Three trim levels are available, ranging from the base LX, to the more refined EX and the sporty SC. The Dog Friendly equipment package is designed exclusively for the EX. The Element has an easy-to-clean urethane floor (carpeted on the SC) and an expansive, flat cargo area (up to 74.6 cubic feet with rear seats removed), wide-opening side cargo doors, low liftin height and accommodating dimensions for tall items. The interior allows seating for four people along with a cargo area that quickly adapts to large items with its flip-up rear seats that fold flat or fold up and to the side, or removed altogether. There are more than 64 seating arrangements in the Element.
Honda Element is even more versatile with new dog-friendly equipment. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and keyless entry. All Element models have a 2.4-liter iVTEC 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Real Time 4WD, available on the Element LX and EX, enhances all-weather traction. EPA city/highway fuel economy ratings range from 20/25 mpg for two-wheel-drive models to 19/24 mpg for 4WD models.
Base pricing on the 2010 Honda Element ranges from $20,525 for the LX with 2WD and a five-speed automatic transmission to $25,585 for the 4WD EX with the navigation system.

Adam Hellman, Turnberry Bank’s vice president and Pinecrest branch manager, recently was a special guest speaker at Palmetto Middle School where he lectured students about the banking industry. Hellman initially provided students an overview of Turnberry Bank as a full service federal savings bank with branches located in Aventura, South Miami, Pinecrest and Coral Gables. He then explained the role of banking as both a lending institution and as a depository where customers save money for a variety of financial needs. “Banks offer loan programs primarily to finance homes, small businesses, automobiles, boats and commercial real estate, he said. “To qualify, borrowers must demonstrate the capacity to pay the loan back, as well as have sufficient collateral should the loan default. As a depository, banks typically help customers save money through checking and certificates of deposit accounts to pay bills, put money away for college tuition, pay for weddings and an assortment of other financial necessities. Customers also receive a variety of services such as online banking, 24-hour ATMs, safe deposit boxes and VISA check cards. Hellman emphasized with the students the importance of saving in order to manage their money and keep some for that rainy day. As a future career, he explained the variety of positions available in banking. “As an office manager, I am only one person on a banking team comprised of

Think twice about following your parents’ career path BY JASMINE BERRY
Kate Hudson, Richard Petty, Natalie Cole, Peyton Manning — if I ever had the chance to sit down and talk with any of these guys about our parents, I’m sure we would all agree on one thing: Following the same career path as your parents goes against the laws of nature. In my family, the tradition of curiosity, prying and reporting is being passed down. My mom, Cheryl, and my dad, Jim, majored in journalism at Northwestern University. She has worked as a newspaper and television reporter for USA Today, The Miami Herald and TV stations in Charlotte and Fort Myers. He has worked at TV stations in Charlotte, Washington, D.C. and, for the last 14 years, has been a sports anchor at CBS4 here in Miami. Growing up, I had a number of career aspirations. At six, I decided to become a veterinarian. At 10, I wanted to be a fashion designer. At 13, I planned to study law. But all of these career aspirations were upstaged by my desire to become a writer when I discovered magazines at 17. The writers in those maga-
TEEN TALK zines penned the stories of men and women all over the world, giving them a voice that, without such writer, would have remained unheard. I wanted to be the giver of that voice. So when the time came to apply for college, I majored in print journalism. At the time, it never even occurred to me that I was majoring in the same field as my parents. My Mom hadn’t worked at a newspaper or TV station since I was little and my Dad talked about sports on TV for a living, completely different from what I wanted to do, right? Wrong. I discovered how wrong I was after emailing my parents the first story I wrote for my first reporting class. I am also reminded of just how wrong I was each time I slip up and tell them I’m working on something. A couple of weeks ago, I was assigned to interview and write a profile story on South Miami’s interim city manager. I thoroughly researched the position and came up with some good questions. I planned to leave the house an hour early to ensure my escape before my Dad returned from his tennis match. Just as I was about to walk out the door, he walks in and asks, “Ready for your interview?”
I could tell by the tone of his voice, that professional tone he uses on air, that the question could not be met with a simple yes or no. He proceeded to fire a series of questions about the composition of the South Miami government that I didn’t have the answers for and wasn’t intending to ask because they weren’t necessary for the angle I had planned for the story. In my mind I was screaming, “This is MY story, these are MY questions; if you want to write a story on this guy then you go do it yourself!” With a few expletives thrown in, of course. But since I’m not completely insane, I simply said, “Okay, Dad I’ll go look it up.” Aside from being in the shadow of an already well-established reporter, my Mom, who has few channels to employ her journalistic expertise, has settled on me to be that outlet. This past semester, I began corresponding with the managing editor of a newspaper in Virginia, where I attend school. I sent her a few stories I had written for the school newspaper and she gave me a piece of advice I found so beneficial and was so grateful to hear that I immediately called my Mom to share it with her. Big mistake! She began to rant, “Well, I could have told you that. You think I’m old and my advice is out of date! Well, let me tell you something.” She continued on and on as I shook my head thinking, I just can’t get it right. Later that week, she
even sent me an email criticizing my writing as well as the qualifications of the editor. Majoring in the same thing as your parents goes against nature. As their children, we seek praise and reassurance. As individuals who are more knowledgeable in the field, they feel the need to correct our mistakes and hold us up to standards we may feel are impossible. Listening to criticism from my parents is perhaps the most ingratiating thing in the world. I can listen to anything my professors have to say about my work, but from the moment my mom or dad begins with, “Now, your story was ok, but…” my blood begins to boil, I clench my teeth and I try to just tune them out before I erupt in a fury and spew out words that will have me looking for somebody else to help put me through college. It is a conundrum. When I allow them to evaluate my work, I’m left with an unshakable feeling of inadequacy. When I try to hide my writing from them, I’m made to feel guilty. When I make a mistake, it’s like the error of the century. When I think I’ve done something right and just want a little praise, it still isn’t good enough. Maybe it isn’t too late to consider biochemical engineering.
Jasmine Berry is a junior and a journalism student at Hampton University, where she writes for the school newspaper. She may be contacted through this newspaper.

ADHD in the Workplace
Keeping a job in today's competitive environment can be particularly difficult for people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition to having talent and drive, people are required to show excellent focus, attention to detail, speed, and organization. These crucial workplace skills may be challenging for the estimated 8 million American adults with ADHD. Job prospects can suffer as a result of the restlessness and inability to focus that are hallmarks of ADHD. One national survey showed that only half of adults with ADHD were able to hold
down a full-time job, compared to 72% of adults without the disorder. When they were able to secure a job, they tended to earn less than their peers without ADHD. Those employment problems translate into nearly $77 billion in lost income each year, which works out to $8,000 less for each adult with ADHD. How Does ADHD Affect Employment? How significantly ADHD affects your job outlook depends on the severity of the condition. Some people with ADHD may just have trouble staying on-task, while others can't make it through the workday without getting into a huge blow-up with a boss or co-worker. Those who are more severely affected can lose their job, or wind up bouncing from job to job, or seeking disability benefits. ADHD affects job performance in a number of ways. If you can't sit still and
have trouble organizing and focusing, you may find meetings excruciating, and keeping track of multiple projects and deadlines enormously challenging. One study showed that people with ADHD often had more difficulty with attention, working memory, mental processing, and verbal fluency -- executive-function abilities that are all important in the workplace. Those difficulties led to fewer employment prospects and lower incomes. People with ADHD tend to have trouble with the following work-related areas: Time management, Organization, Listening and paying attention, Following directions, Procrastination, Completing assignments, Attending to details, Getting to work on time, Speaking in turn, Sitting still, Controlling emotions, Anger Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD), or
with hyperactivity (ADHD), can be treated by using Neurofeedback. This treatment is based on computer programs that read your brain waves. With the assistance of your neurofeedback trainer (most often a licensed therapist), your brain is trained to produce the "good waves." Every time the computer reads the desired brain waves it rewards the brain with sounds and visual stimulation. Thus, the brain reacts favorably to these rewards by producing more of those brain waves. Neurofeedback has been described in lay terms as “playing video games with your brain.” Through repetition, (“training”), the brain soon starts to produce the desired brain waves without computer coaching. This is the point in which most people begin to experience improvement. For more information please contact Miami Institute of Training and Neurofeedback at 305-448-5111.
