unny Isles Beach is started off the New Year with “New Year’s resolutions” recently passed by the City Commission exemplifying wheels of progress that keep turning as elected officials continue striving to make the best even better for residents and visitors in 2011 and beyond. *A resolution passed accepting the results of the run-off election held Dec. 7, 2010 and declaring Isaac Aelion to be elected as Commissioner, Seat 4. Aelion was officially sworn-in at the Dec. 16, 2010 City Commission meeting. Aelion is filling the seat of former Commissioner Roslyn Brezin, who couldn’t run again due to term limits. Jeanette Gatto, who won the election for Seat 2 (formerly held by term-limited Gerry Goodman) began serving on the City Commission as of Dec. 2. • A resolution passed declaring Lewis Thaler as Vice Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach. Mayor Norman S. Edelcup noted, “Vice Mayor Thaler has done such an admirable job, I’m pleased to appoint him again [to serve as Vice Mayor] for the following year.” • A resolution passed approving appointments to the City Advisory Committee for 2011. The City Advisory Committee is responsible for advising the City Commission on matters pertaining to capital projects; long range technical matters; planning and zoning matters; social welfare issues; tourism/development;
procurement; ethics; public safety; and cultural and fine arts enrichment. Committee members appointed by a majority vote of the City Commission include Harvey Busch, Chair; Tony LoCastro, Vice-Chair; and members: Bob Mincow, Bob Welsh, Isaac Feldman, Mariana Talalaevsky, Steve Trattner, Dennis Stubbolo and Norman Peseloff. • A resolution passed approving the renewal of Mutual Aid and Joint Declaration agreements between the City of Sunny Isles Beach and the City of Aventura. The Florida Mutual Aid Act (Chapter 23, Florida Statutes) grants the City of Sunny Isles Beach and other participating agencies the authority to enter into mutual aid agreements in order to ensure that law enforcement agencies will be prepared to adequately address any and all conditions, to protect public peace and safety and to preserve the lives and property of the public of Sunny Isles Beach and participating Miami-Dade County municipalities. • A resolution passed approving a change to the agreement with Coastal Construction Company for services related to the expansion of the scope of plans for Heritage Park and the parking garage project to now include a stage, History Wall, and water feature in an amount not to exceed $1,037,400. City Manager Rick Conner noted, “[Heritage Park] will be the gem of the city!” • A resolution passed expressing support for the “Let’s Move Cities and Towns” campaign focusing on health and wellness, continuing edu-
